Marugame Castle is a fortified structure situated on a hilltop that provides breathtaking panoramas of the city. The castle, constructed in 1597, boasts of its original wooden donjon and stunning stoneworks. It has a moat and approximately 1000 cherry trees that bloom vividly during springtime. While admission fees apply to enter the castle keep, visitors can tour inside for free. However, restoration work is still ongoing in some parts of the wall.

So beautiful
Dynamic stone walls!!
Just looking from outside is also good.
But if you want to see inside, you need to walk up all the way and it is so steep😅

A small castle on top of a hill, surrounded by beautiful gardens and well-tended grounds. The toilets are surprisingly clean and there are a number of vending machines with drinks. It’s a nice area to go to relax. There are also festivals held here throughout the year. Definitely go for cherry blossom viewings if possible!

A very very very small castle. Is it the most exciting castle in Japan? No. But it is one of the original 12 so for the historical value it is intresting to an extent
Alex Litz — Google review
It’s definitely one of the smaller castles in Japan, but it has very high historical value as 1 of only 12 Japanese castles that have been preserved largely as they had been built.
There’s a bit of a hike up to get to the main building of thr castle, but it’s definitely worth it to get a view of the sea and city from up high, esp. right before sunset.
ARBN — Google review
The keep itself is a little small, but it is very old. A lot of the original wood construction can still be seen here. The view from the top of the mountain is awesome! The castle grounds are well maintained, and there are vending machines and toilets available near the top. The gift shop at the bottom of the mountain is really interesting. We saw some people making traditional Japanese fans.
Joseph Williams — Google review
Entrance fee is 200 yen for adult, and 100 yen for children. I still feel 200 yen is too much though. The castle is a walking hazard with the termite-ridden wood falling apart, and there is nothing noteworthy inside except for the tile with a fan sculpture. The exterior still looks okay so if you want to visit you don't need to pay inside and get disappointed.

This is the smallest wooden castle in Japan. Indeed, it’s very small!! You can go in with 200yen. The view is great.

Nice castle, nice views, nice gift shop. A bit of a hike but it's all sloped so it's not too bad. Castle keep closes at 4pm but I think you can enter the grounds any time.

Sakura at Marugame Castle in Kagawa Prefecture-Japan.
Different views of Marugame Castle during the Cherry Blossoms matsuri in Kagawa Prefecture-Japan.
Featuring: A cherry blossom view of Mount Iino (飯野山) is seen from Marugame Castle. This mountain is also called Sanuki Fuji because it resembles Mount Fuji. And it is one of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains, standing at 422 meters above sea level. Sanuki is an ancient name of Kagawa, so Sanuki Fuji means a mountain like Mount Fuji in Sanuki. I really enjoyed this sakura spot. The climb to the top is a bit steep but rewarding in the end. There is a nice atmosphere here, very enjoyable.

This museum makes a stop in Marugame totally worth it. Only about 45 minutes from Okayama by train (over a beautiful bridge!) the museum houses Inokuma san’s beautiful collection in a wonderful building. The museum shops and the cafe are some of the best I’ve seen. Their seasonal exhibitions (autumn 2023 is textile genius Reiko Sudo) converse with the permanent collection and are engaging and unusual.

they have English wall text! They didn’t even have that at the most popular museums in Tokyo (the most populated city in the world 😅) I was very impressed. I came for the MIMOCA EYE and it was a fantastically curated show of current artists in Japan. The museum is off the beaten path in terms of the city, but there is a JR station literally right next to it. If you have a chance to go, please do ☺️ I am currently studying Japanese and have my bachelors in fine arts and I especially loved the little pencils with quotes about art and museums from Genichiro himself that are available for purchase in the gift shop!

New Reoma World is an expansive amusement park featuring a variety of thrilling rides and attractions. In addition, the park boasts natural hot springs, beautiful gardens filled with flowers, and impressive replicas of historical buildings. The hotel on the premises offers a range of stylish accommodations with numerous unique rooms to choose from. Guests can indulge in a delicious buffet spread offered at the hotel's restaurant. The staff at New Reoma World are known for being extremely friendly and helpful to visitors.
We did not expect to find this kind of theme park in Kagawa Prefecture but we are so glad we did! Our toddler seemed to have had a really nice time. We only bought entrance tickets for about 2,000+ yen (children under 2 yo has free pass) because we thought the rides won't be safe for our little one but surprisingly, most of their rides were child-friendly! It was a beautiful place during the day, I think it is a nice spot for sunset viewing plus it had a great view of the Sanuki Fuji (perfectly cone-shaped mountain like a smaller version of Mt. Fuji) but wait until you see the illumination at night and the projection mapping! I personally love the Angkor-Wat replica and the English Garden was beautiful with the Sakura in full bloom swaying through every wind blow creating a snow-like shower of petals. It was just a relaxing scene to witness while you have a sip of your beverage at their tea room. 😍 The mom in me was also glad that they had resting/breastfeeding rooms that were easy to access and was spacious enough for the whole family to rest together. We finished our day with a visit to the hotel's Oedo Onsen Spa which was also child- friendly, they had an onsen pool with temperature that is bearable for small children and they also had small tubs and bathing chairs for babies!
Overall, it was a wonderful experience and I wish we had more time to explore. I think it is a perfect place to stay for a weekend getaway!

One of the bigger attractions in Kagawa. There was a pretty decent number of rides. Unfortunately, we didn't get to see or do much because the weather wasn't too good. At the time that we went, there were kids out in their school trips and they looked like they were having fun, so the place looked lively.

The illuminations were beautiful! There are also few visitors on weekdays so it’s nice to stroll around. Waiting time for rides is very short. The ticket is cheap compared to major theme parks. Hotel guests can get discounts on the theme park tickets when you buy them at the front desk. Overall very good for value of money.

Don't come here expecting Disneyland, I'll say that first. This little park is charming and the workers are friendly and wholesome, and it was a ghost town, even though we went on Saturday. We didn't see all the areas or go on the rides, but there weren't a lot of areas that were interesting to us. The Oriental Trip portion was cool, with the replica buildings, but we had to pay an extra 500 yen to enter, though we already had the entry pass. I was happy to support the place, but I don't feel I got my money's worth at all. ^^; And definitely came to the rose gardens in the wrong season! Very little was blooming. The view was nice, though.

We visited this place twice, but did not come for the theme park, mainly for the onsen and the food, especially for the ALL YOU CAN EAT CRAB. During our first visit we took their free shuttle near TENNOJI station, OSAKA. Years later, on our second visit, the shuttle was no longer free, they imposed a nominal fee, which was more than reasonable. We enjoyed both visits, just missed the crab on the second stay.. However, we enjoyed the day tour to Kazurabashi Bridge かずら橋 - Iya Valley. Apparently, they have several tours with different itineraries, some booked out early. We shall return, and will make sure not to miss the tour we are interested in.

Since it was only 200 yen, I was just hoping I could eat it, but the udon was chewy and quite delicious. I was surprised that it was so much better than the self-made udon around here! I couldn't help but get a second glass.
It is said that it will end as soon as it runs out from 10 o'clock, so if you have a good time, be sure to try it.
Thank you for the meal. It was really delicious.

Pikara Stadium, a compact yet impressive venue, offers a delightful atmosphere for observing Kamatamare's football matches. Unfortunately, the team's performance has recently declined, with deficiencies evident in both goalkeeping and overall play. Consequently, it appears likely that they will face relegation to J3 this season. Nevertheless, the stadium boasts excellent training facilities and an exceptional track that are meticulously maintained.
The training center, track and facilities are fantastic to use. Everything is well maintained.
Also, a great stadium to watch events at.

A small but good stadium. We go to watch Kamatamare play football and it is always a pleasant experience. Unfortunately Kamatamare are not playing well at the moment - usually it is poor goalkeeping but now the whole team is poor. It looks as if this season 2018 they will be relegated to J3.

That was one of the reasons I came to the main island. Many materials related to the history of the main island remain. Broadly speaking, there were many explanations about ``the relationship between the island and those in power'' and ``Kanrin Maru.''
As for the building itself, this guard post was the place where four elderly people who were in charge of the 650 members of the Shiwaku Islands took turns in conducting political affairs. The building is approximately 450 tsubo (450 tsubo) surrounded on all sides by earthen walls and a magnificent nagaya gate. There is a main building and a shuin storehouse on the premises.
When you enter, you will see historical materials that tell the history of Shiwaku, including red seals and sea route maps given by Nobunaga, Hideyoshi, and Ieyasu.
During the Sengoku period, the island's powerful people who controlled the islanders were asked to cooperate as guides and military forces, and in return they were granted autonomy. In later years, this autonomy was converted into stocks, and the right to rule was passed down, resulting in a ``personal name system.''
Next, there is a corner about Kanrinmaru. It is the second Western-style warship possessed by Japan. This operation required skilled sailors, and 35 skilled Shiwaku fishermen (out of a crew of 50) participated. You can see the logbook and the items brought back.
Finally, at the island's great people corner, we were able to see the achievements and decorations of novelist Momoro Okura and super elite doctor Yu Nagao.
Although it is a small island, it is surprising that there have been people and groups with considerable influence from the Sengoku period to the present day. This is a recommended facility. .

He was in charge of all government affairs. At first, four elderly people took turns in managing government affairs in their homes, but with the reform of the island government at the end of the 18th century, a new guardhouse was built, and three elderly people were selected through bidding (election) and took turns. He began to take on political affairs.
The current building was renovated at the end of the Edo period, and was used as the village office and Marugame City Hall branch from the Meiji era until 1972. Inside the building, there are documents (copies) such as the red seal letter, the red seal box that contained it, a letter of approval for a dispute over fishing grounds with the Takamatsu clan (among the eight magistrates who signed it was Ooka Echizen no kami), and 50 sailors. A model of the Kanrin Maru, which was home to 35 sailors from the Shiwaku Islands, and the sailors' diaries are on display.
It's even more interesting if you look around while listening to the guide's stories.

The Shiwaku Islands were given a special status by a red seal from Hideyoshi and Ieyasu, and during the Edo period they did not belong to the surrounding feudal domains of Takamatsu, Marugame, and Okayama. It is said that the island's government office, which had a special status, was the Shiwaku Police Station, where selected elderly people were in charge of political affairs.
When you enter through the entrance in the center of the building, which is surrounded by a white earthen wall, you will see the remains of a prison on your left. It has no iron bars and is now a rest area, but I wonder if criminals were judged and imprisoned here. There are many exhibits in the main building, but what stands out are the stamps from historical heroes such as Nobunaga, Hideyoshi, and Ieyasu. Furthermore, there are many documents from when Kanrin Maru crossed the Pacific Ocean to America. It appears that many people from the Shiwaku Islands served as sailors on board the Kanrin Maru. It was interesting to see something so valuable.

It is the local deity of the Tomari area, and is pronounced ``Kogarasu Jinja.'' It enshrines Okuninushi and two other gods. This is a shrine with a lot to see. First is the torii gate, which has been designated as a Japanese heritage site. It was dedicated in 1627, and is the work of a famous stonemason from Kagoshima, and the cap (the upper part) has an unusual design that curves. Within the precincts, there are still remains of the Edo period bulletin board, the billboard, and the Chitose-za playhouse. Both are tangible cultural properties designated by Marugame City. Finally, the worship hall has a staggered gable and an eaves-shaped gable that makes the eaves protrude below it. The decoration on the hanging fish part is also wonderful, with a bird carved instead of a hanging fish. It looks like a hawk, but could it be a phoenix? There's also a dragon underneath. I admire the high level of skill of Shiwaku carpenters. Similar designs can also be seen at Onoe Shrine in Kasa-machi to the north. It is likely that Onoe Shrine referred to this Kokarasu Shrine when it was rebuilt. Just by looking at this shrine, you can clearly see what the Shiwaku Islands were like at that time.
