Hashiguiiwa Rocks is a picturesque coastal attraction featuring stunning pinnacle-shaped rock formations that carry intriguing legends. These unique rock formations are best explored during low tide when visitors can walk along them and admire the beautiful rock pools below. Each rock has its own name, adding to the interest of the area. The spot also features free parking, restaurants, and souvenir shops for added convenience.

Natural rocks lined in the form of pillars just like bridge support. Hashi in Japanese means bridge. You can buy souvenirs which are low priced.. Good to spend time here. Car parking free here..

A great little scenic spot to see these rocks. Went twice, near sunset and also the next day at low tide where you can walk out to the rocks themselves. Although these rock formations are undoubtedly the most famous in this area of Wakayama, there are plenty of other interesting rock formations along the coast of Wakayama, a beautiful little corner of the country.

Beautiful and interesting rocks that you can walk up to during low tide. I think the best time to visit is for sunrise if you can time it right.
If you are taking the train, I recommend getting off at Kushimoto station instead of Kii-Hime station, which is pretty impossible to reach by foot (Hashiguwa rocks is about equal distance between the 2 stations). It's probably best accessed by car/bus.

The rock formation is very unique. You can see it from far away. What’s also nice is that you can walk up right next to these rocks.
It’s a good place to stop by and rest. Great mid way point between Mie’s Ise shrine and Wakayama’s Shirahama beach.

In Wakayama Prefecture, the Hashiguiiwa Rocks are essentially magma that has piled up from underground from 15 million years ago, making this rather unique geologic formation and tourist attraction. We stayed here about an hour because of the cool sea breeze, plus there is an ice cream 🍨 shop in the building next to the rocks. Go in spring or fall. Summer is too hot in Japan.
Mark Cogan — Google review
This mysterious, natural work of art, featuring a straight line of large and small unusually shaped rocks which stretches for around 850 meters, appears to be the stakes of a bridge. The fantastic scenery colored by the sunrise is especially popular as a photo-taking spot. One legend says that the monk Kobo Daishi attempted to build a bridge here.
Interesting factoid: Some 14 million years ago a massive volcanic eruption sent piping hot magma into the sea just off the shore of what is today Kushimoto. The magma settled in cracks of the underwater sedimentary rock where it coagulated. Eventually, tectonic activity caused an upthrust of the ocean floor, shooting massive rocks hundreds of feet in the air. Over time, the wind and sea eroded the softer sedimentary rock, leaving the hard igneous rock behind. In this sense the Hashigui-iwa are never the same, as the elements continue to form and shape them.
Free parking is available.

Came here on a weekend afternoon. 3.30pm in December means it's almost sunset 🌆 and the low light and clear skies made for some wonderful 👍 photos, especially at low tide 🌊 when the reflection 🪞 pooling in the shallows creates excellent photoshoot opportunities.
With a rest station cleverly situated right at the edge of the beach ⛱️ with a full view of the Hashiguiiwa rocks, it's a perfect place to spend up to an hour. The mascot here is an ogre 👹 which is practically adorable 🥰 too.
Writeups located along the beach are informative and help explain the rock formations. Mostly local tourists and bikers making a pit stop 🚏 along the coastal route.

Hashiguiiwa Rocks is a fascinating place and worth a stop. In fact we actually stayed there for a long time as it was low tide and we walked all the way to the huge rock and could appreciate the awesome geological formation. But do wear proper hiking boots as there are various spots that are slippery.

Kushimoto Marine Park is a relatively small aquarium that showcases sea turtles and coral through displays, undersea tunnels, and glass bottom boat tours. The highlight of this place is the opportunity to interact with baby sea turtles as Kushimoto serves as their home and nurturing ground. Visitors can enjoy a standard Japanese cafeteria and souvenir shop on-site. While not comparable in size to other aquariums such as Osaka Kaiyukan, Kushimoto Marine Park offers a unique experience with its close encounter with adorable marine creatures.

Shionomisaki Lighthouse, located on the Kii Peninsula at the southernmost tip of Honshu, is a well-maintained historical site. Although there is an entrance fee and a charge for parking, visitors can climb the 68 steps to reach the top in under a minute. The lighthouse offers a magnificent view and features a small but well-maintained museum at its base.
The lighthouse here is very well maintained. 300yen to park 5 min walk away, and an entrance fee of 300yen per pax.
May seem a bit steep considering it's a mere 68 steps to the top of the lighthouse, which can be done in under a minute.
But a magnificent view on top and a small but well maintained museum at the bottom of the lighthouse may help offset the cost. At least you get to learn and experience something in the short 30 minutes or so you can expect to spend here.

The lighthouse is located on the Kii Peninsula, at the southernmost tip of Honshu. The lighthouse is one of eight lighthouses that the Edo shogunate decided to build under the Edo Treaty signed in 1866 with the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands and the United States.
Due to its hurried construction at a place where sailing was rough, the lighthouse was initially made of wood. However, the lighthouse was rebuilt in 1878 and in its current stone structure.

I came here to this memorial park having no prior knowledge of what happened here, and found a little-known piece of history in Japan involving the Turkish ship Ertuğrul that had run aground nearby in 1890 during a typhoon, resulting in the loss of 500 sailors, with 69 survivors valiantly rescued by the locals on this island, thus establishing this memorial to cement the friendship between Japan and Turkey back in the day.
There are various memories including a cenotaph dotted around the park and also a lighthouse. The ocean views below and fantastic, and the park has a sense of serenity about it. Definitely worth a hour or so to wander around. The park itself is free to enter but some small entry fees are required for the various museums and other buildings in the park.

(Translated by Google) In the summer of 1890, the Ottoman Imperial Navy's Ertugrul visited Japan, carrying Rear Admiral Osman Pasha, a goodwill ambassador. On its return trip on September 16, 1890 (Meiji 23), the ship was lost due to a typhoon off the coast of Kashinozaki, Oshima. Of the 656 crew members, Osman Pasha and 587 others died. The 69 rescued people were sent to Kobe and then repatriated to their home countries. The former Japanese Imperial Navy training ships "Hiei" and "Kongo" were used at that time. Aboard the Hiei at this time was Masayuki Akiyama, a naval ensign candidate. In later years, Masayuki Akiyama worked as a staff officer in charge of operations under Heihachiro Togo, Commander-in-Chief of the Combined Fleet, and played a major role in the annihilation of the Baltic Fleet in the Battle of the Sea of Japan.
By the way, this victory could be described as a blessing in disguise due to a combination of errors in judgment on the Russian side. However, Japan, overconfident in its national power due to this great achievement, rushed forward on August 15, 1945 (there are various theories). After the war, Japan achieved a great economic victory. But what about now? ...It looks like we're heading towards a second 8.15.

The deity enshrined here was originally a deity in charge of medical treatment. Perhaps because skipjack fishing has been popular in this area since the Edo period, it is now widely worshiped by people involved in the fishing industry.

The Japan-U.S. Friendship Memorial Museum was established in 1975 to commemorate a significant event that took place in 1791, long before Commodore Perry's visit to Uraga in 1853. At that time, two trading ships named the Lady Washington and the Grace arrived at Oshima, a southern Japanese harbor, with the intention of selling sea otter pelts. This encounter marked the first friendly interaction between Japan and the United States.
It is just so far away from anything from the major cities, and so difficult to pay a visit even with a car. But if you decide to go, you should go. Despite the size of the museum, only one large square room with full of interesting exhibition, your experience of learning at here is beyond you can imagine. I might sound exaggerated, but one would be easily surprised at knowing the interaction between Japanese people and American cross-Pacific enterprise, which made quite an interesting story to begin with to sprout the U.S.-Japan relation. The museum, however, is kind of old. The local government is struggling to maintain the building, and currently considering either to replace, or to demolish. I certainly hope that they will take the option for maintaining, and that requires evidence that this museum has its own unique role in such story-telling function. Let's see what happens with our fingers crossed.

Although the museum is small, I was drawn in by the commentary, which included quotations from the notes of the crew of the American ship Grace. Although the facilities were limited, I felt that they had put some thought into how they presented themselves.

With the opening of the rocket launch site, I was moved to think that Kushimoto, which used to be a single window, would become a gateway to space and be placed in a new context.

(Translated by Google) This mysterious complex rectangular building houses reading exhibits and a staircase that offers views of the ocean and coastline.
If you visit the Turkey Memorial first, you can learn about the history of generously helping the Turks after they were stranded, and here you can see that American ships came all the way looking for trade, but Japan's response at the time was the opposite.
I thought it was a valuable memorial museum where you could carefully learn about the history of the topography of Wakayama's coastline.
Although there are not many exhibits, it is interesting to read carefully, so it will take quite a while.
The staff at the museum were very kind and showed us the scenery of Umikongo, which was just a short distance from here. You can also see the eroded rock scenery there, which is different from Hashikui Rock.

This place is free and very educational for both adults and kids. The staff could speak and explain things in English and they have real experimental demonstrations of how magma forms molten rocks. It was a pleasant experience overall.

(Translated by Google) I came to Kushimoto-cho (in front of the Geopark Center), which I had always wanted to visit, from far away, but I rented a car for half a day and went around the area, but due to lack of time I was unable to stop by, so I would like to get revenge as soon as possible. ``This area located at the southernmost tip of Honshu'' is a wonderful place with so many places to visit. I thought it would be a good idea to come with plenty of time, especially if you are interested in history and geological formations.

(Translated by Google) The facility is basically open all year round, except for the year-end and New Year holidays (December 29th to January 3rd), and admission is free (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.). This is a facility where you can play and learn about the formation of landforms from the formation of the earth to the present day, with a focus on the Kii Peninsula. You can learn while playing with multiple-choice quizzes and games, so it is especially recommended for people who like geological formations and fossils.

At the southern most tip of Honshu. A quiet and peaceful place.

It’s a pretty place, the rain made it a little wet but the view and information center are top notch.

A must, big open area to roam about. Not many people can claim to be at the southernmost point of Honshu. Required your own transportation to get there and I do recommend motorcycle since the ride and view is superb.

Glad to say I have been to the southern point in Honshu even though the monument isn't impressive. Stop here for a quick photo and playing frisbee in the park.
