The Basilica di Santa Maria di Collemaggio is a Romanesque church that was constructed by the Celestines in 1289. It served as the final resting place for Pope Celestine V and boasts of a unique chequerboard facade. The church suffered structural damage in the 2009 earthquake, leading to a five-year renovation project that documented its tumultuous history.
A magic place, just restored after the earthquake!
Unmissable!

Simpler than other basilicas, it is certainly worth a visit. A little out of the city center but reachable on foot in about fifteen minutes.

We visited it following the various life events of Pope Celestino which body is kept in this church (prison in Fumone, then Eremo in Sulmona and last this church) amazing rework after the earthquake 10 years ago.

Please go atist once inside.. It is a must if you come to visit L'aquila

So pleased this is open again after the restoration works. Some beautiful art inside as well as information on what went on and how they did some of the renovations, after the 2009 earthquake. If you're in L'Aquila you have to see it.

Visit this Basilica (medieval times) after final restauration. It did take quite a destruction after earthquake in 2009. First time I visited it was around 1974. There is still some work inside including "storic organ" . This Romanesque and Gothic architecture started construction by 1287.

even though the church is damaged after the 6 April 2009 earthquake, the gardens surrounding the church is still amazing. very nice place to chill out, especially during the summer time.

Beautiful restored church with signs to help explain the restoration
The MuNDA, also known as the National Museum of Abruzzo, is a top museum in L'Aquila. It holds a collection of archaeological artifacts and religious paintings and sculptures from both historic and modern times. Currently located in the former slaughterhouse of Borgo Rivera, it awaits restoration to its original site: the 16th-century Castle of L'Aquila.
We were very lucky and didn't have to pay anything today. I liked the medieval art

Personal poco amable, parece absurdo que no dejen utilizar el baño cuando se trata de un museo nacional y por tanto un servicio público. No es la forma de incentivar el turismo en una ciudad que tanto lo necesita...

Unfriendly staff, it seems absurd that they do not let you use the bathroom when it is a national museum and therefore a public service. It is not the way to encourage tourism in a city that needs it so much...
Flavio Mirabella (Scubaflavio) — Google review
In its current state not worth it, even if the ticket price was ok. It's less a museum and more of religious iconography gallery, endlessly repetitive and utterly redundant in this region dotted with countless churches. You end up learning very little about this region.

Most of the text is in italian, only the exhibits that are behind the class are also marked with english. Othetwise nice colf place to be on a summerday of 30+ degrees.

The Fountain of the 99 Water Spouts is a significant landmark in L'Aquila, dating back to the 13th century. The fountain takes on a square shape adorned with sculptures of 99 heads that spout water. This remarkable monument can be found at Via Borgo Rivera's beginning, near Porta Rivera and is accompanied by San Vito Alla Rivera church and MUNDA museum.
Cute and quite part of the city with a lot of history. The fountain seems like a great place to relax and read a book.

Interesting spot in a lovely town. We were en route south and it was a perfect lunch spot, the fountain is quite a thing to see and learn about. FYI opposite the fountain is a lovely hotel that have the most incredible fridges of beef we had eaten but we reckon this would be great

It is one of the main landmarks of L'Aquila. This monument has the shape of a square with 99 little fountains around the border.
It is located at the beginning of Via Borgo Rivera, close to Porta Rivera.
In front of this fountain, there are the church of San Vito Alla Rivera, and the museum MUNDA.

At the bottom of the town this fountain requires either a steep climb down or a steep climb back up.
A unique structure which draws the tourists.

Interesting “negative space” … but walking there is not pleasant, and parking nearby is a real problem. Either park on the ST615 (one way, fairly wide, not to much traffic…), or just drive down the fairly steep via XX Settembre and via Borgo Rivera. There is some parking close to the fountain, or room to just pull over at the fountain.
The Fontana Luminosa, a renowned landmark of the city, was constructed in 1934 and boasts a sculpture created by Nicola D'Antino. The site is situated in L'Aquila, a large metropolitan area, and is widely recognized as one of its most popular destinations. Visitors can enjoy the beauty of the fountain's design even though restoration work is still underway due to damage caused by an earthquake nearly 10 years ago.
It's one of the iconic fountain of L'Aquila. Best to visit at night when light and water display the best show.

It's way beautiful area! When I was there was little cold but otherwise it was breathtaking place and that amazing status made it more interesting! If you have been in L'aquila you know it's quite big city and that place is one of the most popular places in there, try to visit that place even if for one time

The Basilica of San Bernardino is a must-see in L'Aquila, Italy. Its Renaissance facade, crafted by Cola dell'Amatrice, is a sight to behold. The basilica suffered damage from an earthquake in 2009 but reopened to the public in 2015. Inside, visitors can admire the Camponeschi Mausoleum and that of San Bernardino. The highlight is the Mausoleum of St.
To me is a must see peace of architecture, a please where to feel silence and where to meditate if one wants to. A 💎 of L'Aquila just steps away from the Spanish fortress known as CASTELLO by many.

This is a beautiful basilica that was only reopened in 2015 after a violent earthquake damaged it in 2009. The highlight in entering this church would be the Mausoleum of St. Bernardino (or Bernadine) of Siena, which can be found at the fifth chapel to the right. Entrance to the church is free!

A bit morbid but the areas damaged in the 2009 earthquake have been beautifully restored. Interesting to learn that the original church was built over and dedicated to the crypt of victims of an older earthquake in approximately 1703. The beautiful artwork and architecture have at times been a collaborative effort between French and Italian artisans culminating in a gorgeous blend of Roccoco and Baroque. Highlights are the ancient pipe organ, marble work and magnificent dome.
