Wonderful place, beautiful beach, breathtaking rocks! Until the moment you get back to your car and notice that the car has been broken into and robbed! There are lots of broken glass and bags thrown into the ditches along the parking lots (an afterthought after you search for your own). The police do nothing (why would they?).
So stop and take a photo! But be careful!
Thank you Livorno! I won't come again!

Visitors to the Terrazza Mascagni in Livorno can enjoy panoramic views of the coastline and cityscape from its elevated terrace. The deck is named for Pietro Mascagni, a composer who was born in Livorno.
Beautiful! The chequered tiles give it a beautiful look and you see amazing surroundings nearby.
One can also go close to the sea and find many beautiful corals, sea grass, tiny colorful fishes and crabs. I attached photos.

A lovely open air space sandwiched by the sea and the city. The warmly-coloured chequered marble floor, the tall palm trees and the grand bandstand in the centre made it an ideal place for sitting, strolling, jogging, running and cycling.
Feel a bit like the LA's Santa Monica sidewalk but without the sandy beach!!

While visiting Pisa we took the train to Livorno for the afternoon. A bus from the station brought us to the Terrazza Mascagni. It is a lovely walk along chequered tiles surrounded by a waist high wall, which gave beautiful views over the Ligurian sea. There are benches where you can sit and rest / enjoy the views. While there was a cafe nearby the restaurants were all closed by 2.30 / 3pm so make sure you eat before you visit. I would also recommend when buying bus tickets that you buy return tickets as well as it is difficult to find anywhere that sells them.

This area (contrary to other reviews) is NOT well maintained at all.
Haven’t been here for a few years, but it looks like material choice was wrong for the balustrades… appears that saltwater has soaked into the concrete and corroded the reinforcing bars - shattering many of the top stones.
Now looks a real mess… 🤦♂️
Give this a miss - just not worth the walk from town, unless using one of the private beach front facilities nearby.

The views of the city from here are amazing. Plus it's a Great place to park and walk into the city from, which we did. Parking fees were reasonable. They also have a bus stop there as well. It can get very busy so be aware of that. We came just after a rain storm and found parking easily, but when we returned after our visit it was very crowded. Wonderful place either way!

The Shrine of Lady Grace is a religious complex maintained by monks and featuring a revered Madonna image. The grounds are peaceful and have beautiful views of the Livorno Hills. The museum features the history of miracles that have occurred here.
Most impressive location with great view and many tokens of Catholic devotion. The church is located on top of a hill with a great view and inside you find a huge collection (over 12.000!) of tokens.
Even if the religious part is not your thing, it's still worth a visit for the great view and the short trip by cableway.

Very moved by as well as interested in the folk art of the ex voto in the sanctuary - and the pharmacy selling bio products (tisanes, sweets, shampoo etc) is very good. Definitely worth a visit - especially if you combine it with a gastronomic pilgrimage to the fabulous Osteria fonte del penitente nearby (not the ones in the square in front of the sanctuary which are really grim)

My military family lived in Livorno for several years and we frequently frequented this beautiful Sanctuary of the ‘Madonna di Montenero’ while we were all very young . As Catholics, My brother and I made our 1STHoly Communion there. It is a miraculous Sanctuary of Our Lady of Graces. So unbelievable, so unforgettable, so NEEDED in these times of turmoil. It is up on a mountain overlooking the beautiful Naval Port of the ancient City of Livorno. 👍😄🏆🌹🍃

We arrived there after checking the opening times on the official website and after driving 1h from where our accomodation was. We struggled to park as there is NO parking in the area and we had a massive SUV (very bad idea in Italy)....after we struggled for 15 mins to find a place we went to the monastery and entered. 30 seconds later a very aggressive and rude man started to shout at us in Italian and literally threw us out with no explanation.
We stopped at the restaurant nearby for a coffee and the lovely ladies explained the monastery is closed for an hour or two for lunch. All in all a terrible expereince, waste of money and time and I would not recommend the place as it is nothing to see or do...besides being bullied that is.

It is a great place to show sea life to your children. It is a bit time fatigued, but it is Italy, so sun made it like that. It has a nice observation deck though, where one can see really far away, incl. many ships approaching port. Next to it there is a water park, so the whole day can be easily spent there. An in the same building there is a very good restaurant as well, does not belong to aquarium though.
Venezia Nuova is a district in Livorno that was developed in the 1620s to cater to the city's increasing population. The area, situated between old and new fortresses, was originally crisscrossed with moats that had once encircled the old city walls and were now vital waterways for transporting goods between the port and adjacent warehouses.

The fortress-fortress known as Fortezza Vecchia overlooks the Medici port and was built in the 11th century. In the 16th century, the Medicis had the fort proper constructed in order to defend it. Today, it offers stunning views of the harbor and cityscape. It is also a popular tourist attraction with by-appointment exhibitions.
An amazing discovery!
This wonderful structure with a rich history was free to walk around and almost empty of any other visitors. When we were there, they were using an outdoor area for a breakdancing contest (which added a bit of excitement), there was a beautiful temporary art exhibit at the top, and there is a bar in the first courtyard you come to when you visit.
But the real magic is in the lower levels. Wonderful arched hallways and rooms that give a real sense of how it was used and experienced centuries ago.

The museum houses city artifacts and features contemporary art exhibitions inside a former baroque church, which used to be a warehouse for preserving oil in the past. The monumental statue commemorating the victories of Ferdinand I over the Ottomans is located in Livorno. The upper part, depicting the Medici Grand Duke, was completed in early 1600s, while the bronze figures of the Moors were finished in later years. The monument is a popular tourist destination with its beautiful waterways and historical setting.
A little harsh but realistic statue of the medevil enslaver, that shows four slaves under the submision of his master
Vladimir Brkic — Google review
This monument is looking horrifying at the first glance. You can see slaves, but it is not "celebrating slavery". I recomend to read information which are from the side of the monument. I forgot to take a picture of it.
From the artistic side, it is a masterpiece and you can really see and feel suffering of the enslaved prisoners.
"It celebrates the victories of the Grand Duke Ferdinando I de 'Medici and the Order of the Knights of Santo Stefano over the Moori pirates who raided the Tuscan coasts."
"He enacted an edict of tolerance for Jews and heretics and Livorno became a haven for Spanish Jews as well as other persecuted foreigners."
Gabriela Karabinosova — Google review
Pretty fascinating monument. It's size and stature draws the eye then the four moors chained to its based demands further enquiry. It was completed in 1626 to commemorate the victories of Ferdinand I of Tuscany over the Ottomans.
'Moor' meant 'dark' and was used to designate non Europeans who attached or raided southern Europe from North Africa or the East Mediterranean.
After spending another week working in Livorno this statue is certainly the most captivating and well worth seeing. It's not far from New Venice or the historic forts.

Livorno is the Medici port and this statue commemorates the defeat of Moor pirates who were kidnapped and sold into slavery , from ships and coastal towns around the Mediterranean.
The Medici system of port defences, initiated in this city was innovative and a game changer for many towns including on islands like Elba and Malta. This statue - like the fortifications and reminder of what Medici did - is stunning and beautiful.

Livorno is the Medici port and this statue commemorates the defeat of Moor pirates who kidnapped and sold into slavery hundreds of thousands of people from ships and coastal towns around the Mediterranean- especially Iberia - ruining trade and forcing coastal communities (incl Ports) to move inland. The Medici system of port defences, initiated At Livorno was innovative and a game changer for those towns including on islands like Elba and Malta. So this statue - like the fortifications and indeed everything Medici did - is stunning and beautiful. Its subject - is also an important turning point in social and economic history for the Mediterranean. It also recalls the extensive use of slavery - there are negative comments about this - but should note these were slavers who themselves became enslaved. Google Moorish Prirates.

Important but problematic monument from the 16th-early 17th centuries. The monument it not in its original location or configuration, but is is extraordinary for the four bronze sculptures by Tacca representing the "types" of people who were enslaved to work on the Medici ships and port of Livorno. I say "types" w scare quotes bc some think two of the figures, atleast, are portraits of real people. That can owed to Tacca's attention to the people as human rather than stereotypes. For the time period it was much more common to show enslaved people as ignorant and without humanity. Not here. I could go on, but won't. I recommend looking up the history of the monument. Lots online in past few years as the monument was the site of BLM gatherings in Livorno. We are so lucky the over life size bronze sculptures were not destroyed (melted down) for their material in the 19th century!
Two other parts (fountains) of the monument are found one piazza over.
There is also a nice cafe just across street from monument where you can sit outside and contemplate the view.

Appalling, atrocious, disgusting piece. If art is meant to provoke feelings, it surely achieved it with me. I went around it again and again inspecting closely at what I was witnessing. Yes, I read the caption below, yes I googled it's history and NO ! I cannot justify its existence in a European city in 2022! Men of colour suffering in chains ??? Whatever happened in the past should stay there - this is not art ! It's a reminder that people are still racist. Remove this ASAP !
P.S : I left Livorno 10mins after I saw it. Such an off putting sight!!

Breathtaking views from its rocks, with the Castle overlooking the water.

The Cisternone, a neoclassical-style building constructed in the mid-19th century, serves as a large water purification and storage facility for the water brought to Livorno by way of the Colognole Aqueduct. The interior of this vast structure is divided into chambers and can hold over 11,000 cubic meters of water. Despite its utilitarian purpose, the building has become a popular tourist attraction due to its impressive size and architectural style.
Very good

Nice and clean with beautiful colors. It's no beach but more stones. There is a free parking during the week after the bridge direction South (4€ on the weekend). There is also the possibility to rent sun umbrella, chairs and deckchair (the parking price can be used to pay part of the equipment rented).

AVOID - Expecially foreign tourists should avoid this beach. It’s very difficoult to find a parking spot and even if You are able somehow, cars are regularly visited by THIEVES. While You are enjoying the sun, thieves may break your door windows, damage your keylock, etc. I personally got my car door demaged, and I was away for just few hours, so this must be organized crime. I didn’ t leave anything inside the car, but instead than checking from the windows, they decided to damage my door, just to take nothing. So be aware… they tend to prefer foreign tourists as they will not always report the issue to the police. The beach itaelf is beautiful bu not worth the troubles.

We had a delightful encounter with a family of boars, it's sometimes a bit tricky to park not too far away from the walking path but totally worth it
