The Castle Estense, also known as the Castle of Saint Michele, is an imposing 14th-century moated fortress located in the heart of Ferrara. Originally built by the Este family as protection against citizen revolts, over time it became a luxurious residential palace with stunning features such as marble balconies and a Renaissance-style courtyard. Nowadays, visitors can access almost all areas of the castle to admire its opulence and explore its history.
A must see in Ferrara. Not so appealing from the outside, but the painted ceilings are reminiscent of the Vatican, with less people! A very interesting gallery and museum are included with a tower aswell.

It is nice to visit castles when there is one around. It helps understand how the area grew around it. This one includes a lot of explanations. I just regret that the inside does not include any furniture. The castle in itself is well preserved, not as good as others that I visited in France but it is worth a visit. If we could have a service with human guides, I would go for it. It just makes such a huge difference about what you learn and how you enjoy the tour. The temporary painting exhibition was just great. The price is high though (14€ including the tower). I recommend to visit the tower to get a scenic vie of the city.

Interesting Museum in the middle of an old castle. The tower climb is worth the view! However, the permanent exhibits are not well translated, making it hard to understand and not fun to read. The temporary art exhibits were very good and well prepared!

Beautifu big historic structure in the centre of town. Worth visiting with calm to enjoy all it has to offer, including an ascent in one of the towers (122 steps, no lift) to get a panoramic view all around.

The castle is definitely the most significant building in the town. We most of the things in the town are built from bricks, this castle is also made of bricks, which was a big surprise for me as I am used to seeing castles made of stone. Make sure to check the opening hours. I was surprised that castle as well as many restaurants and places were closed on Tuesday and done also on Wednesday. You will pay extra 2€ for entrance to the tower but it is definitely worth it because it will give you wonderful views. Unfortunately the castle doesn't include original furniture. Signs inside the castle are both in Italian and English, but sometimes translations were not the best and you had to think twice about what they wanted to tell you. Also, it didn't necessarily go in the historical order so you were putting pieces of puzzles together to understand. Orientation inside the castle was also difficult sometimes because the outside curtains were closed so you had no idea on which part of the castle you are at the moment. But overall, of you are in Ferrara, you cannot miss the opportunity to visit this castle.

Impressive Ferrara’s landmark worth visiting. Make sure to chech for busy hours, otherwise it’s too crowded to really enjoy. Best time to visit is spring or autumn.
Located in the center of Ferrara, Centro Storico Ferrara Rooms & Suites offers bright and simple rooms and suites with free Wi-Fi. There is also a shared kitchen, making it easy to get started on your day.
Nice set of rooms right near the city centre of Ferrara. The rooms are tidy and the is a lot of space. The bathroom is sort clean and comfortable. The kitchen has to be shared with another room and then it needs to be cleaned. The prices are really good for the quality it offers. The WiFi is free and there is usually someone to speak to if you need something.

Although I found this on a day use hotel website they claim they're not.
After calling and trying to reach them to get a better proper answer they just hang up the phone or don't answer it.
I came to Ferrara to have a rest here on purpose and now have no where to go.
The minimum is to answer the phone or door! Been standing outside ringing the bell and nothing.
Dear team be careful where you put your business! Thank you , hope that help and now I'm just going to take a nap in the street , thanks to amazing professionalism.

One of the worst hotels I've ever been to. They have the central A/C system and they set it to 25°. Do you call that A/C? Had to complain several times to set it to 21°. The bed was really bad. It makes a very disturbing noise every time you move. After changing the towels, they provided just one big towel for two people. Extremely disappointed.

The Casa Romei Museum is a Renaissance palace with an elegant courtyard that houses rooms filled with sculptures, friezes, and frescoes. Originally owned by Giovanni Romei, a top administrator to the Este clan, the architecture of the palace reflects his importance. The brick exterior may seem austere but it hides a peaceful inner patio that was once part of an adjacent house belonging to a Renaissance merchant. Visitors can explore this lovely museum for an entrance fee which is deemed reasonable.
Surprisingly extraordinary. So reasonably priced. For the price of a gelato, you experience rare finds and well explained descriptions. We were lucky to have the amazing Alexandra, who generously and intelligently shared a plethora of interesting facts, trivia, and relative implications of what this place held within. The monastery of Sant'Antonio in Polesine is home to some of the most beautiful art and sculpture in all of Italy. The statuary and frescos are incredibly stunning, and it's not unusual to see people gazing up at the statues with mouths moving as though they're singing. One person even filmed a video of the statue of David lips moving, which was captured entirely by chance.
Admission not straightforward.. Strictly limited hours. Important to respect that it is a working monastery. Entrance to area for frescoes is to the the right of the church. RIng the bell. We parked by the city walls and walked the short distance. Beautiful frescoes from the school of Giotto with explanation in Italian from a lovely, elderly, gentle nun. Put donations in a box at the end where items are available for sale. 5 pm Gregorian vespers. A delightful experience.
Helen Myers — Google review
Outstanding frescoes. Unfortunately, a guided tour given by one of the nuns is mandatory - which limits the amount of time one can spend with the artworks. Also, no photos allowed as they want visitors to purchase souvenirs from their small shop at the end of the tour.
DAVID SNYDER — Google review
I was there on September 16th 2019. My friend and I were there to listen to the nuns singing. By the way, incredibly beautiful. Anyway, I was looking around at the statuary and the frescos. I looked up to the right at the statue of David and the lips were moving as if singing with the nuns. I thought it was the lighting. So, I turned to my friend and asked her to look at the statue and tell me what she saw. In total astonishment she said that the lips were moving! I have a video. I don't know why we did not ask the nun giving the tour, I guess we did not want to alarm her. But, my question would be, has anyone else had this experience there? I want to thank any answer in advance. Kind regards, Mari Stille

The convent, whose decoration was lavishly supported by the Este family, has a chapel open to the public, with a beautiful 17th-century frescoed ceiling. The church inside, which a nun will show you if you ring the bell during the posted hours, has three chapels that are decorated in extraordinary early 14th-century frescoes, some by followers of Giotto.

The city center of Ferrara boasts a mix of medieval and Renaissance architecture, including the picturesque Via delle Volte. This ancient road used to connect local warehouses with workshops and is now one of the oldest and most charming streets in the area. Walking along this street provides a glimpse into both medieval and Renaissance styles that permeate throughout the city center. It is definitely worth adding to your list of things to do in Ferrara for an authentic experience.
The Basilica Cathedral of San Giorgio Martire is Italy's largest religious edifice and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, displaying several architectural styles including Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque. The 12th-century cathedral has a spectacular Romanesque design mixed with baroque and Renaissance paintings, portals, statues and bas-reliefs.
We went during Christmas season. Unfortunately the cathedral was under remodeling operations. But the piazza, the surrounding buildings, the castle next door, and the vibe of the market more than made up for the construction inconvenience. Ferrara is such a beautiful city.

Beautiful Cathedral, dedicated to St. George. It is located in the historic center opposite the Palazzo Municipale (Town Hall). The sacredness, the majesty and the beauty of the decorations and the frescoes leaves us breathless. The cathedral of Ferrara dates from the 12th century and bears witness to the historical periods of the city. The outstanding facade, divided into three sections, was begun in Romanesque style, still visible in the lower part. The facade is rich in scenes from the New Testament above the central door, the work of the sculptor Nicholaus (1135). The upper part was built some decades later in a Gothic style and besides the numerous small arches and the splayed mullioned windows presents an extraordinary Last Judgment by an unknown sculptor over the central loggia. The imposing Renaissance campanile (Bell tower), in pink and white marble, is an unfinished work attributed to Leon Battista Alberti. The interior of the church is rich in murals, paintings and sculptures by renowned Renaissance masters such as Nicolò Baroncelli and Domenico di Paris (bronze statues of the Crucifixion and of Saints George and Maurilius), Guercino (splendid canvas of the Martyrdom of St Lawrence), Bastianino (grandiose Last Judgment). The interior of the cathedral was rebuilt in 1712 in Baroque style. During our visit it was under reconstruction, but it does not diminish the splendor of the Cathedral. It is possible to enter the Cathedral at certain times.

Stadio Paolo Mazza is an exquisite and enchanting destination, as reported by a companion. According to her account, the venue was remarkably captivating and everything unfolded flawlessly during her visit. Inspired by her testimony, I am enthusiastically looking forward to my own future venture at this remarkable location. Rest assured, I will strive to make the most out of my experience at Stadio Paolo Mazza!
I was here for SPAL v Monza, 11 September 2021. The adrenaline was pumping as this was the first time the vast majority of fans had been in the stadium since February 2020. The atmosphere was out of this world.
Some logistical stuff. Two of the four stands are temporarily closed due to a legal/safety dispute with the local authorities. Only the two extremes remain: Curva Ovest, €16 an adult ticket, the place to sing, wave flags and jump around; Tribuna, €24-€50 an adult ticket, the old fogies' expensive stand. Part of the Tribuna has been separated off into an area for away fans.
The Italian authorities are allowing only 50% of fans in due to COVID.
To enter a stadium here you have to show I.D. which matches the name on the ticket plus your COVID status. They check everyone.
Having said all that, everything was implacably organised and everyone I know that wanted to go to the game managed to get a ticket. Just don't wait till the last minute.
The parts of the ground that are open are superb, having had a lot of work done to them when the club had two consecutive promotions to Serie A from Serie C ... although they're now back in Serie B again.
Ferrara is not a huge town. The train station is a 5-minute walk from the ground. There is plenty of free nearby street parking.

(Translated by Google) Seat of the National Archaeological Museum, the palace offers a wonderful overview of the archaeological heritage of the Etruscan city of Spina. Recommended for scholars and lovers of antiquities: the exhibits (local productions and Greek imports from the 6th to the 4th BC) are extraordinarily well preserved, and at the end of the itinerary a counter has been set up where you can personally touch some authentic and intact ceramics. The ticket price is more than affordable.

A fantastic place to visit, as well as being a wonderful old Palazzo it is the National Archeological Museum of Ferrara with a superb exhibition of artefacts from the ancient city of Spina. Thank you Piedro for your company today, explaining how this city was discovered and how the museum is set up, but still evolving, to present the artefacts at their best.

The structure has a typical medieval construction, the garden behind it is home to a small but very interesting labyrinth. The Museum, located on the upper floors, presents the most varied collections of ancient ornaments and furnishings. The visit does not last long and it is possible to be followed by a tour guide. Un bellissimo museo da visitare sia per le splendide ceramiche attiche rinvenute dagli scavi di Spina, sia per il notevole palazzo che le contiene. Anche il giardino merita una visita: un’autentica oasi di pace.
This italian restaurant OSTERIA DEL GHETTO in Ferrara's old Jewish ghetto is a hidden gem, serving dishes typical of Ferrara. the food tastes excellent and the staff are warm and friendly. The only criticism is that the portions could have been larger.
What a lovely experience this was. A little off the beaten path in Ferrara, maybe more of a local favourite than something tourists will typically seek out but definitely a place you'd regret missing. The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated, with artwork on the wall and the old wooden ceiling above. I chose a melanzane as starter and tortellini in brodo for my main. Both were super tasty, made with care and passion. It's amazing how the food made me feel at home immediately.
Service was friendly, quick and attentive. Tried my best at using Italian instead of English and they were very patient with my efforts. Much appreciated.

Very well located in beautiful and quiet street, nice antipasti, good primi. Special explanation from the nonna of the house.

Friendly and caring service and great food. My risotto with green peas was amazing, the grilled octopus as well. Leave some space for desserts!

We went for dinner and loved the food so much we came back for lunch. Everything was so delicious. The guinea hen with pears and saffron was exquisite. We also loved the warm seafood salad, the risotto with peas and other dishes. The older lady (owner?) told us the anchovies were the best in the world and, while we don't have much experience with the dish, it was truly amazing, fried and battered but oh so light. Staff is warm and helpful.

Wonderful traditional osteria in the heart of pedestrian-friendly Ferrara. I had bookmarked this place and walked past it without any real interest. It looked quiet and empty a little before 20:00. We circled back and decided to see if we could eat here. Boy, are we glad we did. We ended up eating upstairs where the older proprietor personally waited on us. We let her recommend her specialities. Delicately fried anchovies … amazing! Butternut squash filled ravioli, one with the traditional butter & sage and one with Bolognese sauce … simply amazing. Their house dessert was outstanding. Great coffee followed by complimentary grappa. Such a great and affordable experience!

Everything about our visit to this unpretentious side street Osteria was 5 star. Wonderful staff and in particular the elderly lady who deals with the bills. She allowed a taste of one of the desserts, a cake/tart. It was a wonderful nutty (hazelnuts?) with chocolate chips.
Excellent value and worth a further visit.
Make an effort to find this off the main street restaurant.

I wanted to try all the specialities: the cappellacci, the saluma da sugo and the torta tenerina. I was dissappointed by none of them. Good value all round and very kind people.

Restaurant serving dishes typical of Ferrara. I went for lunch and tried their tasting Menu for EUR 25 comprising local delicacies like cappellacci di zucca, salma da sugo and torta tenerina. The dishes tasted excellent, especially the pastas. The service was warm and friendly. The lady in charge of the restaurant looks after every customer personally. My only critisism is that for the prices charged, the portions could have been larger.

Nice family restaurant in the heart of the old ghetto (you have to know where it is in order to find it). Typical local menu with some Jewish specialties. I like their acciughe scottadito and cappelletti cacio e pepe. In the summer there is a pleasant dehors on the street. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, the place is quite popular with locals and at times tourists, when crowded the acoustics make it a little too noisy. For the three of us the bill was €110. We have been there many times, and we will continue to go.
Hostaria Savonarola is a restaurant in the center of Ferrara with outdoor seating that overlooks the Ferrara Castle. The service is friendly and efficient, and the food is delicious and not expensive at all. Highly recommended, this spot is popular with locals for lunch or dinner.
We visited this place sometime in November and were impressed with the hospitality despite the huge number of people (it’s pretty much crowded whenever you come here), the delicious food, and their reasonable prices. Came back again today and despite the fact that they were about to close at 3 pm (we arrived a little past 2 pm), we were treated with the utmost courtesy, given lots of service bread, and we never felt rushed at all. Husband had the pork cheek this time around (he had pork knuckle previously) and it is the tenderest meat. I had my usual which is the puff pastry with prosciutto and shredded cheese and balsamic vinegar which is an absolute delight. The tenerina chocolate cake is divine.

Prices are reasonable, portions big enough, but some dishes were almost tasteless, others just ok. Waiters not very welcoming or interested. Overall an average experience.

Very busy place. We were told it's not touristic but it's the opposite.
Service is extremely fast. Everything you order comes in a jiff. Even the secondi.
Nevertheless, everything we tasted was very nice. Ingredients were fresh and all plates tasteful.
One star less for the fact that there's only one restroom (for both men and women) and we had (each of us) 15-20 minutes in a line to pee!

Food was excellent and service great, the only reason I give 4 stars is cause I went to the bathroom 1 min and return and the table was given to someone else, even taking my water. I know it was full but at least ask me and I would agree to move on fast. It feels awkward to return and see someone else in my place. Hope this was only a one time thing.

Delicious, traditional food, not pricy at all and absolutely worth the way. It’s near the Ferrara Castle. The personal is kind and friendly. Recommended 100%.

Nice local restaurant near/within the historic area of Ferrara with a stunning view of the old castle.
The menu has classic local/Italian food that feels fresh and made locally by hand, the food was great and so was the wine and definitely at affordable and good prices. I recommend anyone passing through the area to sit down for lunch with a stunning view.

Went on Sunday to visit a friend.
I order 2 plates the first one was "polentina montanara with porcini mushrooms and crispy bacon " a must try. The second plate was the famous " Pumpkin Cappellacci with ragù sauce" the best I ever tasted and the best part when you finish the Cappellacci is to take slices of bread and do what the Italians do "fare la scarpetta", clean the plate with bread and eat it.

Amazing place, the dishes are all authentic Ferrarese dishes and the portions are enough to fill you up. The atmosphere is great and the service is as well. I definitely recommend getting the pasticcio alla Ferrarese which is the speciality of Ferrara.

Beautiful meals typical of Ferrara that highlight the elegant flavours that only come from the simplicity of Italian food done well. The experience gave me flashbacks to sitting at my Nonna's table as a five year old.
