Old Town, situated along the Sea of Crete, boasts a fusion of Venetian Renaissance and Ottoman architectural styles. The labyrinthine network of cobbled alleys is home to an array of museums, intimate tavernas, and eateries serving up traditional fare. Souliou Street is dotted with pottery shops and artisan studios in close proximity to the Rimondi Venetian Fountain - a popular landmark.
The Venetian Fortezza Castle, a 16th-century citadel located in Rethymno town of Greece, offers panoramic views of the port and the city. The fortress features massive walls and bastions in a star-shaped structure that was unable to resist the Turkish invasion in 1646. Despite being partly destroyed during WWII, a village emerged within its grounds. Visitors can explore around the ramparts, palm trees and remaining buildings including the Sultan Bin Ibrahim Mosque with its huge dome.
This place is massive for a fort
The views are stunning.
There are site maps available free of charge in different languages
Drinks are or where available at the time of our visit by the main entrance
The entrance fee is 4€ each.
Please be aware that the ground is very uneven and pebbles and stones are in all walkways

Nice historical place, family entrance fee 10EUR and it worth it. You get piece of history and nice view around! What I am just missing there are some signs, description of buildings... Very hot place, don't forget to take a water and visit WC before you go there. Don't worry about the line waiting for the tickets, it's moving fast.
Lidule — Google review
Brilliant few hours spent exploring the fort. There's a lot of history there for just 4 euros entry fee. Be careful if visiting with small children as the high walls have gaps which are only protected by a chain. Well worth the visit and it's just a short walk from the old town.

The fortress, towering over the city, offers a fascinating glimpse into history, though it's somewhat worn by time. If you decide to take a walk around just remember that much of the path is exposed to direct sunlight.
Admission fee is set at 5€ for adults, a fair price for the experience.
The site is sprawling, with many of its ancient buildings now just ruins, the walls, however, are in good shape and offer spectacular views over the city and sea.
For convenience, there's a shop selling snacks and beverages, along with toilet facilities.

The castle is kept in almost perfect condition, the visit to the castle is very interesting and the way to it is very beautiful because you pass the beach and until you reach the castle you see crazy views. It is recommended to visit there for at least two hours to walk around and discover new secrets 🤗

Beautiful views of the sea and the city. Interesting historical monument. Family admission for 10€. In the summer count on minimal shade, it's really hot. You can buy refreshments at the beginning of the area, especially water.
Karel Hor?k — Google review
It's only 4 Euro to get in and it's a nice walk once you are in. There are some cool underground sections and some beautiful spots, also some ruins and cave type things. For the money it's well worth the few hours it takes to walk around. The only drawback is it isn't really safe for children as there are some big drops with just a small chain to stop you. There are some cats in there too.
Mrfotography — Google review
I do not know much of the history of the castle but I was fascinated by my tour inside the walls.
You do not have access to every building and the view of the city and sea is breathtaking.
The entry cost is low and mind that you need at least 50 minutes to see it all and during summer time it can get extremly hot. Of course there are some areas you can hide from the sun under the trees and you can also buy refreshments near the entrance.

I highly recommend to visit. Beautiful views for Rethymon. It costs €5 for an adult ticket, and you also get a leaflet with a map describing the main buildings.

An excellent place to visit. Reasonable price (cheaper for families and over 65's) Lots to see and great views. I would recommend.

Nice sights, great history but sparse. They charge 0.50 per person to use the toilet?! Even after charging 4 Euros per person for entrance fee. Less than impressed because of that and why 3 stars and not 4.

A beautiful place to visit. Incredible views of Rethymno too. Beautiful chapels on way up to top. Impressive architecture. Definitely advise morning or late afternoon visit though as mid day too warm during summer months.

An interesting place to visit whilst in town.
€4 each (over 16) or €10 for a family ticket (as long as children 16 or under)
It is very exposed.....and hot....although there is shade as well
TBH not too much to see ...but glad that we visited. Although ...I wouldn't class it as a must see.
Toilets....even having paid €14 to get in...you still had to pay for the toilet! 50 cents. Not impressed with that at all

I love it! Apart of being a landmark of Rethymno it is a the atmosphere and the marvelous view on the city and sea that recommend it. You get a nice cultural experience by visiting the painting exhibition or by attending to a concert in the free air auditorium.
I totally recommend it.

[visited August 2017] beautiful fortress, wonderful vantage point, not crowded, not a lot of explanation provided on the very long and tumultuous history (Venetians, Ottomans etc.), but it does make for nice, maybe even quiet walk (if the occasional busking saxophone player is not there) in a very beautiful place. Note you are exposed to the elements most everywhere within the fortress, so if it’s a hot sunny day make sure you have hydration and adequate clothing covered.
Vlad Sabau — Google review
A major disappointment.
From the outside, the citadel looks incredibly impressive, and we were eager to reach the top and explore its interior, which, according to the tourist brochures, is (or should be) magnificent.
Passing through the entrance gate (which, I must add, is quite imposing and fueled our expectations of what awaited inside), we queued for about an hour before finally entering the fortress, only to find... well, nothing much.
To be frank, besides the city panorama and the sea view, there's not a lot to see inside. There are a few buildings, most of which are closed, lacking any interesting information. Additionally, there are (were) a few broken wooden pallets thrown around the yard, some plastic chairs and some random electrical cables that seem out of place in such a historic site, and that's about it.
While I wouldn't dissuade tourists staying in nearby cities from visiting the fortress (especially considering that the highly praised city of Rethymnon isn't as spectacular as portrayed in online articles), it's essential for the visitors to adjust their expectations.
Positive aspects:
- the wall of the fortress and the entrance gate
- the panoramic view
- the affordability (4 Euros for adults)

There were a lot of buildings to see and many a great photo opportunity to be had at this fortress. Lots of great views and easy to get to. Nice to see but I don't think it's a 'must see'. Wasn't that much to look at to be honest. For some reason we didn't have to pay entrance fee but I see from other reviews other people did.

Walked up from town so no parking issues. I like forts in general and was pleasantly surprised by the large area of this one. There isn't a lot of shade so early evening on a hot day is a good time to visit. Virtually no information boards, so lost a star for that, though you do get given a map of the site. Very good views along the coast and across town. Good value at 4€ per adult.
Βιότοποι της Κρήτης, also known as the Wild Nature Park, is an outdoor attraction featuring a vegetable garden and tropical creatures such as iguanas and turtles. This lovely park is filled with local flora and fauna, offering visitors a chance to experience natural beauty.
Nice tour € 5,-. It's not a zoo or an parc. It's a big garden full of natural plants and trees from krete. The tour is very interesting. Nice view, als very small cave you can get in.

On arrival you are greeted by one of the Volunteers. You are offered spring water and you get to taste a Prickly Pear. There is a guided tour of the site by one of the volunteers. They will tell you about the fauna and flora. You get to smell the leaves/flowers and what uses they are used for. Also on the tour you get to see a Land Turtle and also a Chameleon. Further along, there a great views of Rethymnon and the harbour. You also get to visit a cave.
A word of warning ⚠️ It is very uneven underfoot. Wear appropriate footware!
Also it is not for anyone with walking difficulties. Entrance fee is €5 and it is worth the money. Transport is required to get there. (Or a long walk).

The wife and I enjoyed a pleasant few hours here including the 20 minute walk from our hotel near the beach.
It isn’t Kew Gardens, nor does it pretend to be. It’s a small plot at the top of a hill which is run by volunteers.
Once there were were offered water and the tour began. In our case the tours started on the hour. You learn a little about plants, see one or two animals and enjoy the amazing view. Our guide was friendly and genuine.
There is also an optional walk at the top which we did, some uneven large steps, but I wouldn’t say it was difficult.
The tour is free but we were happy to make a donation at the end.
We enjoyed it there and would recommend.

Lovely park full of local plants and trees and bonus animals. It took a while to walk up the hill, but we were greeted with cold water and friendly faces.
They offer guided tours only - we didn't know this before entering and we were a bit worried, because one of our group members doesn't speak English. The tour was however amazing! We got to taste and smell herbs, flowers and plants, the guide was very considerate and gave us space to translate to our non-english speaker.
We enjoyed it very much!

This is an amazing park that i would recommend to everyone interested in nature!
Me and my girlfriend went here around 10am to get here you need to hike up a mountain (what was a challenge) but you already got a look at the amazing view you would get later!
When we arrived we where greated by the amazing volunteers (they are from multiple countries) we got tastefull cold water and had a little chat!
After the chat one of the volunteers gave us a tour, he was dutch just like us so that was great! He told us a lot about the plants and animals that live in Crete! It was amazing to learn so much information about Crete and it's rich flora and founa :)
After the amazing tour we went up the mountain and got a beautiful view of rethymnon! And the mountains surrounding it, gave us goosebumps!
It's also nice and windy so you want melt away! They close at 1pm so keep that in mind when you are going!
The entrance fee is €5,00 but absolutely whort it to support this great place and it's people! You can also buy herbs that are grown with the amazing plants there!
Go support them :)

Really nice! Small, but really natural, personal, not touristic at all.
Really friendly people working there (voluntarily), they show you around at 10+11+12h; 5€ only for entrance. Highly recommended of you are looking for a non-touristic tour about regional plants and a stunning view from the hill.

Everyone who visits Rethymo should go here to learn about the local flora and fauna. Very knowledgeable volunteers here doing good work that's worthy of the 5€. We walked there and it's a 20 minute walk uphill but worth it for amazing views. A must for nature lovers and a fun way to spend the morning!!
Baja Beach Club in Rethymno, Crete offers a vast privately organized beach area with various amenities and activities. The club features a large swimming pool, including a separate one for kids. Visitors can enjoy parasailing, beach volleyball, jet skiing, and other recreational options. Nafpigio, an electro house bar located nearby, is known for its lively parties and guest star DJs.
An amazing place! The food was great, the music awesome, the staff friendly and the venue itself very cool. The only lacking "department" was the toilets, which somehow are a bit run down.
Looking forward to visiting this place again! If I ever move to Crete, I will be a regular here.

Baja beach club has really nice beach with great sunbeds with thick sponge so it is very comfortable for relaxing and sunbathing. Ticket is 15e for two sunbeds and you also get bottle of water and towels and I think that is a great price! Beach is nice, and the pool looks good when you come in the morning while it is still empty. Something that we did not like is hygiene. Toilets are underground, dirty, smelly and some of the cabins are broken. Also too many people for the small pool so it gets really dirty during the day. Food and drinks are really expensive. Pizza is 15€ and it is the the most expensive and driest I have ever tasted in my life so differently not worth it. Coffee is around 4 or 5€ which I also think is a lot as everywhere else is around 3€.

👁️ Palms and turquoise sea💙
🖐️ 🤨Slow service, very hot sand♨️, stones in the water-bring rocky-sand-shoes
🚽😧 Toilets are recommendable only in the morning, when not visited by other people
💰 Low cost 15 Euro set of sunbeds option and luxury 40-55 Euro double beds, gazebos etc. Food is self served for low cost.
👍There is an offer for all personas on the beach and at the pool- family, couples, groups, celebrators, etc. Low cost prices include water and towels, which u may not get if u don't insist
❌Water slides are not in operation- great disappointment for the kids
👂 Good music by a DJ, from time to time African style- lovely, not heard at the beach
👅 Food- both snacks and restaurant- tasty, the best from all tried options at other beach bars
🍹 Cocktails are average with ready made additions for time saving purposes
In general- nice but pricy beach bar, not wow at all.

Beautiful beach club, about 10 min drive from main part of Rethymno beach. Updated cabana area, plenty of seating both around main pool area and directly on beach. Bathrooms need to be updated next. Restaurant food was very good, fresh sea bass was amazing. Be aware there are rocks getting into the beach.

Place is fun for the music and people watching. Avoid the restaurant !!! Service was beyond bad and nobody cared. Reminded me of the Greece 25 years ago. I come to Greece every year and the service gets even better everywhere but this place. Food was average even after waiting an hour for it and again nobody apologized or even cared I guess their main focus is serving Smirnoff at the beach bar.

Cool place. Pool and beach. The sunbeds are pricy and price differs on size and location. Remote location from the city center - too long to walk. Cab costs approx 9 EUR. Pool service, cafe and restaurant. The latter is pricy. Note hidden costs as the water slide is charged in addition.

The food experience unfortunately ruined the whole experience, instead of a creamy pasta I got pasta with soup? (Staff called it juicy pasta) the prices are not correct, they have updated the prices but this is nothing the costumer sees in the menu (staff explained this) and the staff charged more for the food than what was on the menu. In addition to this, staff ask if you want to tip. Staff come and want to charge for sunbeds that have already been paid for and start questioning who we paid to. The place also needs renovation, the toilet was so bad.

Place looks nice but the service ruins everything. At the restaurant we waited 15 minutes for someone to take our order. There were only 5 tables occupied. Then for ONE BOTTLE OF WATER and 3 cocktails we waited another 25 minutes. The deserts and food were brought before the bottle of water or cocktails ever arrived (43 degrees outside). We went to get the water from the bar ourselves. Food was worse than average. I asked for salt and pepper to salvage the food and after waiting for 5 minutes, I got them myself as well. Crete’s average taverns have way better service and incredible food compared to this place which is supposed to be high-end (considering the prices). The beach is quite bad and the water not so clear/turquoise compared to rest of Crete. Also, there’s only one toilet in the entire place. So from the beach front/restaurant/bar you have to walk all the way behind the swimming pool. It’s also not very clean.

Nicely decorated place with bars and plenty of places in the shade of palm trees. Good music plays in the background and the pool is spacious but shallow. There is a separate area for children. The area on the beach is well decorated, but the beach itself is not that inviting. The prices are a bit higher, but it is justified by the use of the pool and good service. If you want to relax, listen to music and meet some new friends, this is the place to come especially when the beach is closed due to big waves. Free parking is also a convenience.

Really nice place to enjoy at the same time the pool and the beach. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere is really nice too. You can enjoy the pool and relax in the big beds next to eat.
You also have the dj set for the music and you can order drinks and food. Pretty good place in Rethymnon area !

Very overrated, the place is pretty yes, but with that everything has been said. The service was terrible and the staff didnt really seem to care.
There were extremly long wait times for getting your drinks and or food.
We bought daybeds with water and towels included, we had to ask for water 2 times before we got one bottle. We also had to ask for towels 3 times, they didnt bring them until we had already been there 4,5 hours.
We made a reservation for the Restaurant for food, you have to make a reservation at least an hour in advance. We had to wait 15 minutes for somebody to notice us. We then orderd food and it took over 75 minutes to get our food, we order 3 burgers and one sushi platter, it was good but not great. The food is also extremly exspensive for what you get.
The place is pretty but please dont waste your money on the food and or drinks but just bring something yourself if you really want to go. But id recommend going elsewhere
The statue symbol of the city of Rethymno. The two dolphins were also the symbol of Rithymna, the ancient precursor of modern Rethymno. This was revealed by ancient coins that one can see at the archeological museum of the city. The statue itself is beautiful. The location is also fantastic. On one side is the marina and on the other side is the long sandy beach. Therefore, one can admire at the same time the statue, the great views to the sea, the marina and the nearby mountains.

A spring well from the year 1626 during the Venetian rule. The well once brought water to the townspeople from a nearby hill. Four columns and part of the dome remain from the building. Cool water comes from the pipe. Sometimes quite a crowded corner and people even turn back. Most of the time, everyone gets to take a picture while waiting for their turn.

If you live in an underdeveloped area, and you don't have running water at home, you might be impressed to see water flowing from a wall, no matter how scratchy the wall may appear.
Unfortunately (or, rather, fortunately), I've seen a plethora of faucets, pipes, valves, siphons, showers, fixed and flexible connections, etc., so I find myself utterly incapable of being impressed by a faucet that flows water, regardless of how lavishly it's presented in tourist brochures.
I usually attach photos to the reviews I publish, but this time it seemed to me that the "monument" was not even worth the effort of taking the phone out of my pocket.

The Historical and Folklore Museum of Rethymno is situated in a 17th-century Venetian mansion and hosts a collection of traditional crafts and folk art. Although not particularly large, the museum offers interesting exhibits on both floors. The ground floor features exhibitions related to World War II, as well as tools used by various tradespeople throughout history. Meanwhile, the upper floor showcases local artifacts such as textiles and pottery from different periods.
Great museum with the collection of many items related to modern history of Crete and local folklore. Worth of the visit while being in Rethymno.

Beautiful needlework on display plus other craftwork. I wasn't so keen on the coin collection.

It was so much better than expectations, I was predicting just a couple of rooms filled with a few things. But there were 6 decent sized rooms and an outside, good variety of tapestry, furniture, needlework, basket weaving, World War memorabilia, pottery/ceramic and a cool room at the back with small shops set up with the objects they would have been filled with.

I had a great experience visiting this museum. Downstairs you will find historically artifacts that reflects both the history and passion of the Cretan people. You can see many artifacts from the daily lives of the everyday workers too, knifemaker, lyra maker, traditional clothes maker to mention some. I am overly excited in embroidery, so this was perfect for me! Upstairs they have dedicated the entire floor to tapestry, embroidery and basket making to mention some. It was amazing to see everything. I really enjoyed visiting!

Not as big museum as you might expect, but it has interesting stuff inside. The ground floor contains mostly the World War 2 exhibition and small room of tools that different people used for their work. The second floor has different folk things and there more things to see, so don't forget to go upstairs.

Really freindly people that gave us a look at all the instruments, even gave a demo of some of them. Overall a very relaxed place and there was no pressure to move on as the workers were making the lyras in front of us!

It was a wonderful experience! We love our handmade baglamas which we bought at a great price in this traditional handmade music store. The owner was very friendly and gave us a lot of background information about all his Cretan instruments. He showed us his workspace where all the instruments were made and we could enjoy the Cretan music which he and his colleagues played on his selfmade instruments.
If you can appreciate traditional Greek music and/or you are looking for a great souvenir. This place definitely deserves a spot on your to do list when you are in Rethymnon.

When I went to greece, I didn't expect to be buying a Tzouras... This place was very cool, and if you can play a violin or guitar you should definitely check this store out.
The woodworkers, and supposedly the owner gave a clear explanation, and you could try out the instruments yourself.
The price of the instruments was lower then on sites in my country, so that was also a +.

Had a great experience with Manolis. He showed us his workshop, how he makes the Lyra. Answered all our questions, even had some musicians play for us so we could dance! Bought a beautiful Lyra from him. Would recommend!

The owner of this workshop is a master of building traditional kretan instruments. The business is owned by his family for 3 generations already. True legacy, masterful instruments.
Very friendly staff, as i aksed about the instruments he called some guys from the back of the shop and they took some instruments abd performed 10 minutes of beautiful kretan music.
We had a great time, could also watch the master building a lyra.
Thank you!
