This impressive church is over a thousand years old and features beautiful frescoes and arches. It's one of the oldest churches in Como, and is definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.
One word for this Basilica... incredible!
The Rev. Fr that walked us through the story of the basilica made it sound and look so lovely. I couldn't help but wonder how the love of God have greatly inspired the generation before us.

Beautiful, peaceful snd completely empty. Much more ancient than the grander Duomo in the centre of Como. There’s beautiful artwork too.

Really lovely church ideal visit off the beaten track no toilet facilities but nearby quaint bar (to left of picture) around corner with helpful and super friendly owner Claudio.

This is the second oldest church according to our guide. Unlike so many churches in Europe, which are often a mixture of various styles, here one finds quite a rather unaltered Romanesque construction.
The Basilica, built in the 11th century over an even older church as has been found out by recent excavations, is aesthetically very pleasing - from the exterior as well as inside. There are also some wall paintings, although they date from the 14th century.
In the middle are the relics of Saint Abbondio, a local bishop, and of two of his successors, rather unknown saints elsewhere. Next to the church is a courtyard, recently restored, which now gets used by the town's university

The church has seen better days, though the front is lovely. It is also nice to get out of the central tourist area. If you are lucky, they host concerts there with nice acoustics.

The Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta - Duomo di Como is a grand religious structure constructed over three centuries, featuring ornate tapestries, artwork, and frescoes within its palatial interior. This impressive cathedral boasts an imposing presence and stands as a testament to the skill of its builders. With intricate details and artistic flourishes adorning every corner of its vast space, it represents one of the most remarkable examples of sacred architecture in the region.

Very impressive! The location is very nicely positioned, right next to the lake with the most amazing view. The lake has a really small area with sand and pebbles to sink your feet in the lake on a hot day. 🔥 Gets really busy in the summer and can get crowed.

It is an interesting building near the lake. It is a monument for the most famous son the the city, Alessandro Volta. It can be visited also from inside
The locals are rightly proud of their favourite son and this is a fabulous little building to commemmorate him. It's only a short stroll along the front to reach it. Sadly, despite their being tourists everywhere in Como this week, someone decided that you could enter by appointment only and that this required two days notice. Dissappointing to say the least

The temple is at the very end of one of the "arms" of Como lake, which very beautiful! So only with that, you will have a great view!
It's located in a small park with some green where there are always tourists passing by, locals walking with their kids, dogs, etc. There are some benches where you can enjoy the view, the weather and maybe do some reading as I did. :)
I really enjoyed my time there and recommend in case you are in Como. Definitely worth it.

The Basilica of San Fedele is a religious building in the city of Como, Italy. It was built between 1120 and 1140, and it is Romanesque in style. The church has an impressive bell tower, as well as a dramatic interior with a pipe organ. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful churches in northern Italy.
Open every day from 8.30-12.00 then 15.30-19.00, not open Monday mornings. This is worth a visit, a short walk from the main Como cathedral. It was quiet during Easter weekend but will be busier in the summer months.

If you're visiting lago como, I highly recommend taking a trip into the city of Como to see this gorgeous Basilica. The 17th century frescos are gorgeous and the church is stunning! This is only a 5 minute walk from the church in the center of the square in Como, but totally worth the visit!
Rebecca LeDoux — Google review
The basilica itself is much smaller than the city’s duomo but San Fedele has it’s own cute little charm. I find the surrounding streets to be a little more colorful and the plaza itself, in front of the church, is much bigger — compared to that of the Como Duomo — this makes San Fedele Basilica a very relaxing spot off the crowded, tourist-filled, tiny streets.
Great to get an apero right outside the many shops and coffee places while enjoying the Romanesque edifice in front of you! Good historical landmark!

Nestled in the heart of Como's historic center, the Basilica of San Fedele stands as a significant Catholic place of worship. This sacred sanctuary is dedicated to the eponymous saint, known for his role as an evangelizer of the Como church and his martyrdom in Sorico during the 3rd century.
Regrettably, I was unable to enter the basilica during my visit due to an ongoing event.

This basilica could easily be a cathedral in any small European city. However, in Como they already have a large cathedral and that takes away visitors but does not mean it is important. This church has undergone many renovations over time and is probably located on top of what was once an early Christian temple. Be that as it may, if it does not have more than 1000 years of history, there is little left. It is a clear example of Lombard Romanesque although you should know where to look. Both inside and out it is beautiful and it is worth taking a look around seeing the frescoes that can still be seen in some of the apses and also a representation carved in polychrome wood entering on the left.
The villa takes its name from the presence of a centenarian elm, which once stood here but has since been lost. It was designed by one of Lombard neoclassical's most authoritative architects, and was finished in 1796. Although it underwent restoration works in the 1800s, it has always been praised for its grandeur.
Beautiful building with great views of the lake. They use the interior for exhibitions. We didn’t much care for what they were showing, but the exhibition was free entry and it allowed us to see the interior of the Villa. Really what you go for is the lake views. Nice little stop.

If the weather is nice, have a coffee on a bar of Lido di Villa Olmo and visit the villa's gardens. If it's not Monday (because the villa is closed on this day), don't miss to enter Villa Olmo and see its interiors (open from 10 am till 6 pm), the entrance is free. It’s not really a welcoming place once you get there, while from afar it looks majestic. The lawns in front of the villa are quite crowded. There’s a small public „beach“ where you can enter the lake but it’s not really inviting actually.

We were told we could only enter if we bought a ticket to the exhibition and even then we could only see the exhibition, not wander the ground floor as everyone else seems to suggest. Restoration work going on out front. Not the place to visit at the moment it seems.

A delightful experience watching Swan Lake for the end of the year. The theatre is adequate but the viewing experience from the top floors is greatly hindered by the presence of badly positioned columns. To get the true viewing experience for a die hard fan of the theatre, I would recommend balcony seats always in the case of Teatro Sociale.

Beautiful theatre, good productions. An important centre of Como cultural life (and not only)! After the 2nd World War, when the building of La Scala was damaged, Teatro Sociale di Como was the scene for the productions of La Scala. Porta Torre is a famous city gate constructed in 1192, encompassed by shops, eateries and a weekly market. It is an impressive addition to the traditional architectural style of the old town. The gate served as the entrance to Como town, surrounded by fortified walls which began from this point. Porta Torre is located on the outer periphery of Como's primary shopping district and boasts numerous small bars with both indoor and outdoor seating arrangements.
Standing tall and mighty, Porta Torre, also known as Torre di Porta Vittoria, is an impressive fortress that reaches a height of 34 meters. It was constructed in 1192 under the guidance of podestà Uberto de' Olevano, serving as a protective stronghold for the main entrance to the city of Como.

The Life Electric monument in Como is a modern sculpture dedicated to Alessandro Volta, the inventor of the electric battery. Designed by Daniel Libeskind, it stands on an artificial dam facing Lake Como. The monument consists of two sine waves and has become a popular tourist attraction over time. Alessandro Giuseppe Antonio Anastasio Volta (18 February 1745 – 5 March 1827) was an esteemed Italian physicist and chemist. His pioneering work in electricity and power led to his recognition as the inventor of the electric battery.
In honor of Volta's contributions, the magnificent marble statue of Como was unveiled in 1838. Created by Pompeo Marchesi, a renowned sculptor of the era, the statue stands tall as a testament to Volta's legacy. The imposing base, crafted by Francesco Durelli, supports the statue and bears a simple yet heartfelt dedication: "A Volta – La Patria" (To Volta – The Homeland).

Only steps from the lake. Good paths for hiking and biking. Several overlooks into Como, the lake and Switzerland. For the weekends, very peaceful outdoor getaway.

Beautiful place to hike but the signs and maps are very unreliable. Get the map from the website, it's more accurate, and allow time for getting lost!

Good view of the Lake of Como. Some wildlife wild boar and Foxes. Ancient villas hidden in the park. Nothing more. Surprisingly very, very few birds. Nice walk in the hill.

The park is a well maintained nature reserve with pathways and areas dedicated to education, picnics, view points and information resources. There are historical landmarks, like the Cadorna network of trenches, and #Celtic sites. The Alpini veterans and other volunteers group do a lot of maintenance work and organise events and walks that keep these woods full of walkers. Paths are sometimes wide and gentle, sometimes narrow and steep. Good car parks and maps at many access points; also easily accessed by public transports, which allows for linear walks rather than loops.

Natural park with several easy trails that can be taken from the S.Fermo town up to some viewpoints above the lake.
Castello Baradello is a restored historic watchtower that sits atop a high hill overlooking the city of Como. It was built on the site of an ancient settlement dating back to the 1st millennium BC and served as a military fortification for various groups throughout history, including the Byzantines and Lombards. Although it was closed during one visitor's hike, there are other sights to see on the journey, such as an ancient settlement and replica Roman farm house.
The castle was closed for construction I think. The place is very beautiful, we parked the car down the street and we went up the hill. The road is very steep, it was a bit hard. But the place is very beautiful and well maintained. We got to see a little part of the castle and its surroundings, and we saw Como with one side of its lake.

Although the castle is closed in the winter, the walk up offers great views when you circle around the walls. We had a nice picnic on the walls overlooking the city.
The footpaths are not well signposted on the way up from the town. The information boards are not very detailed.

Great collection in the music wing of the museum. Highly recommended just for that part of the museum. The archeology museum was not as great. If you can definitely check it out the location being within the old castle makes the whole experience worth it.

Although Castello Baradello was closed when we made our hike here, the rest of the journey was worth it.
Don't be disheartened if you find this closed, if you carry on your hike you'll come across an ancient settlement (pre-Roman), replica Roman farm house, and astonishing views from Monte Croce.
Kayleigh Mills — Google review
The hike up is good for the views! But the castle is rarely open, so I wouldn’t get my hopes up! But as you can see, you do get a stunning view of Como and the lake from the top of the hill so if that’s what you fancy, it’s well worth the walk.

Breathtaking views of Como, Lake Como and the surrounding areas. Worth the effort to get there.
The Chilometro della Conoscenza botanical garden is a wonderful attraction located close to the city center, offering several multi-level pathways for visitors. The blooming of hydrangeas along the access road of Villa Sucota is particularly stunning and can be enjoyed during holidays when the garden is normally open. This beautiful spot can be easily reached from Villa Olmo, with parking available in the stadium or seaplane base area.

(Translated by Google) Very suggestive. Quiet, surrounded by nature with glimpses of the lake. We embarked on the route from Villa Olmo, outside the gate, near the lido, we turned left and went up to cross the pedestrian bridge that overlooks the road and leads to Villa del Grumello. You come across a devastated greenhouse, certainly to be recovered, a botanical garden, a small stream and then the greenhouse of Villa Grumello where they organize yoga and other meetings. After walking the path above Villa Grumello, we returned from the road ... but next time we will continue the walk to the following Villa. Opening from 9 to 18.

Molto suggestivo.

It's not always easy to find your way, but perhaps we were there out of season and had the feeling of being a little abandoned. Otherwise you have to look in the area, I think there are only paid parking lots.

The Villa del Balbianello is a grand 18th century villa which has been used by filmmakers including James Bond and Star Wars. The gardens are quite beautiful and are popular among tourists.
What an experience!!!
My husband had been wanting to visit for a long time due to his love of movies in particular Star Wars & 007.
We visited the locations where the movies were filmed and wandered around the whole surroundings.
Villa del Balbianello is breathtaking, do yourself a favour and go!
Side note: We caught the private water taxi here and that helped capture some of these gorgeous shots due to the better access spot for drop off.

Charming Villa on top of a small hill which enjoys marvellous views of lake Como. The trees, the plants, the flowers, the rockery, the variety of natural landscapes and man-made pathways is simply amazing. Fascinating history of the place, full of twists and turns until the last owner died and donated it to a National Trust. The architecture blends in beautifully with the complexity of the natural landscape surrounding the villa. Almost a fairytale place, unsurprisingly used as a cinema set for some very famous movies. Not to be missed!

Amazing villa to visit which was one of our highlights during our stay in Lake Como. Be prepared for a 20 minute walk uphill or alternatively you can get a boat to take you around to the other entrance. Highly recommend attending early so it is quiet for you to walk around the gardens. Also the guided tour of the interior was really good and insightful, highly recommend doing that as well.

Beautiful place! Went round the gardens as hadn't pre-booked a tour inside. If you struggle walking definitely choose the shorter 20-minute route through the park to the entrance as the longer 40-minute route if very steep and rough terrain. Bus C10 takes you pretty close to the park. As a Star Wars fan this was so worth a visit for the famous arch and balcony. The views are incredible too. Would recommend if in Lake Como.

I had one incredible experience visiting this fabulous Villa. FAI does an incredible job, as always. The tour guide (in English) was really nice! Beautiful estate, try to come here when the temperatures are in the 60-70s F°. They're is a lot of walking up and down fairly steep inclines. Access is either by a very hilly 1Km walk, or by a boat shuttle you can pay for. We walked and it took about 20 minutes.

So so glad we booked the day out here! If you have the opportunity book a guided tour as you can go inside, and it went through the history which was so interesting. The gardens are gorgeous, extremely well kept, and were very fun to explore. There's a small ice cream place within which was nice as it can get hot, but I would love to visit this again!

I only took the gardens tour. From the outside the villa looked small so i waant't disappointed. The gardens are really beautiful with nice views of surrounding towns. Obviously there are a lot of people but it's not overcrowded. There is a 20 min walk to the gardens with slopes. Parking is limited.

What a wonderful place to visit. This villa and it’s beautiful garden are one of the most beautiful places I have visited.
The tour guides are lovely, so informative about the owner, the contents and their admiration for the man who owned it. Totally fascinating story of this explorers life and his residence.
Many films have had scenes taken on this Island including scenes from Casino Royal and Star Wars.
Well worth a trip to see the gardens with its views across the bays from every outlook.

One of the more interesting villas in all of Lake Como. The full guided tour was absolutely worth its price. The view was also fantastic, being surrounded by lakes at almost all its surroundings.

First of all, the walk is long and exhausting because of the hilly nature of the road.
So i recommend you to use the boat, its right in the water side walk .

Parking was completely full, so we had to find another place around 5 min. from the start of the trail. Getting to the villa is quite a hike as it is very steep and takes around 15-20 min. As soon as we arrived, we were able to skip the long line as we had already prebooked. The villa and grounds are absolutely beautiful and very well maintained. Can definitely recommend this place if you want to take pictures of pretty Lake Como as well.

A beautiful villa by the lake. Two type of tickets for you to choose, one with guided tour into the villa and the other can only access the garden area. I recommend you to take a guided tour to learn more history about this villa, and you could see many antiques collected by the owner. The garden is as beautiful as you can see on pictures, and especially on sunny days, it’s also the filming place of star war and James Bond. Transportation to here from Milan is easy, just take the regional train to varenna and then the ferry.

Beautiful experience visiting the well taken care of gardens. If you walk from town be prepared to hike up hill in many spots and remember to bring water. I recommend taking the boat over for older folks. There is a book shop on site that sells water. Get tickets in advance to the gardens as it can get busy.

The Villa del Balbianello has been beautifully preserved for centuries. The grounds are very well-maintained, and so are all of the buildings. It is a bit of a hike to get to it from the entrance, but just treat it as a leisurely stroll. You could easily spend a half a day on your visit.
Be sure and arrange a tour of the house or you will really miss out. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the history of the place and the lives of the people who lived here.

This place is absolutely stunning. I went to both the garden and the villa (guided tour), and it was amazing. The villa was huge, great for taking pictures of scenery and yourself. The atmosphere gave out old money vibes, loved it. The tour guide who showed us inside the villa was really friendly and patient with us as well. The only downside was that it was a one hell of a hike before you can reach the destination ( a good workout though). Definitely worth a visit if you’re ever in Lake Como. 😎

This villa is famous for its beautiful architecture, gardens, breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Como, and the surrounding mountains.
The Villa Carlotta museum houses one of the most renowned gardens in Italy. The garden was designed by Gian Battista Sommariva and is a reflection of reason surrounded by its more romantic counterpart, the flashy theater of the following century. The art collection inside the museum is renowned for its many works by famous artists such as Canova, David, and Throvaldsen.
Fantastic villa on the shore of Lake Como with stunning views across the lake from both the museum and the garden. This Villa contains superb gardens and an excellent museum of the villa itself. The museum is large with lots of room to move around. It also has lots of different rooms, art, artifacts and antiques to see but my favourite part was walking around the very large garden.
Well worth a visit

Try going in the morning so you have more time exploring as the garden is pretty big. It also has picnic spots so it’s a great place to spend a day on when visiting lake como. Has fantastic lake views, the villa itself is gorgeous, but the garden is a botanical one with many cool plants. Has a bamboo jungle which is magical.
There’s free parking down the villa & there are elevators to take you up in the garden & upper floors of the villa, right outside of the villa in the south.
Absolutely recommend a visit, so worth the price (15€ adults)

Beautiful Villa, beautiful gardens and a lovely walk on a perfect spring day. The cafe and toilets were open. I would recommend 2-3 hours for a leisure walk around the gardens before finishing at the museum (which ends in the villa and gift shop). We parked 400mtrs before reaching the villa in a paid parking place which we were lucky to get some space in. There are some decent restaurants and places to eat walking distance from the villa. There is a ferry stop across the villa and that takes you to Bellagio (another beautiful place which is a must visit).

We loved this place! The garden was amazing with different species from all over the world. So cool that they are able to thrive in Italy due to the microclimates around Lake Como. The villa had beautiful views of the lake and offered many opportunities for great photos. The café inside had a decent selection of food and drinks, although slightly overpriced.

Love it and hate it:) it was a great walk, very nice and scenic. Very poorly marked trying to exit. You need to really read the map as there is only one exit sign, and it's not at the exit. It is very confusing for most of the people there. Plan on about 4 hrs if you want to do the whole thing. There are signs that say 75 minutes for the full walk, maybe, probably not. Add an extra 30 minutes to find the exit. Think only 3 people work there, so you are on your own. Overall, it's a really great place with poor sinage.

Beautiful villa with huge well kept garden. It has some old furniture dating back to the old times but also a collection of cutlery and crockery which don’t relate to the families who once lived there. Villa Carlotta is such a beautiful and peaceful place. The vast garden with the numerous flowers is absolutely breathtaking and the museum (inside of the Villa) is spacious and very lightning. I thought the place was smaller and that the visit would have been shorter but you have to take at least 45 min to 1 hour for the short visit (main garden tour and museum) and 1 hour 30 min to 2 hours for the big visit with all the garden.
It is clean, not too crowdy and I believe that Spring time offers the best images with the colorful flowers and trees everywhere. Don't hesitate !

The grounds are nice, however not easy to walk with a child and not wheelchair or pushchair friendly.
The main floor of the house is worth a quick visit but the other floors are not. The rooms are tiny and filled with minimal artifacts and furniture.

Villa Carlotta is a lovely botanical garden with so many different varieties of plants. There is such diversity in the fauna and flora growing here. For example, they have a rhododendron section, a succulent and cactus garden, a fern garden, and so many others. The layout of this garden has been planned by a mastermind., and many walking past throughout the garden. The villa itself has beautiful architecture and art inside. A lovely little oasis right on the waterfront and very close to the water ferry drop off.
