The Portas da Cidade are an iconic 18th-century public square located in the charming city of Ponta Delgada. The gates were relocated to their present location in 1952 due to the construction of the beautiful avenue Avenida Infante D. Henrique, but they have been in use since 1783. The square is surrounded by ornate archways and is considered as one of the landmarks of Ponta Delgada.
My experience was very pleasant, everything was very clean and the atmosphere was very nice. Will visit again as soon as possible.

This is an iconic place and standing there you realize how much the island has grown knowing that the doc was right at those Gates.

Beautiful architecture! I love this town square. I came here in the 1st week of July and they had a big parade. This whole island feels more of a paradise for me than the Oahu Island, Hawaii. I lived in Honolulu, I would choose Ponta Delgada anytime.

Fun little town center. A few restaurants and shops you can walk around. Be careful the cars drive kind of crazy!
Alessandra Camargo — Google review
The city gates are quite an architectural sight. They are unique in that the island's volcanic rock was used to shore up the columns and engrave neo-classical designs. It faces the Atlantic Ocean, where there is an upper and a lower boardwalk that you can walk for multiple kilometers.
~We had some tripa, which is like a crêpe on steroids. It was tasty and intense. After a while walking around the city center, we wound our way to the botanical garden nearby. It looked incredible from the outside, like an oasis. But we were denied entry due. It was near closing time. We were on our way to Paris and only made a 24 hour stop so we couldn't return. I hope to come back some day.~

Very nice main square, amazing buildings around here with corridor and plaza. Church is very nice, street musican give extra feelings. Always found in Here taxis, just €10 one way to airport less them 10 minutes, licit is most important.

Now that they have started to block traffic attend this center it makes even more enjoyable to walk around. Don't forget to go to the top of the Bell tower fault close by to get a good view of the city.

Historic city space. Recently renovated into a walking zone. They installed benches and planters that are also benches, a great spot for a break between city sights. Or simply to watch the world go by.

Actually porta Delgado. The garden at the governor's estate is lovely. Limited to 20 visitors. Two euros to visit. One euro for seniors, they'd a limited path to walk on. You'll be thrown out of you go close to the governor's mansion. Policia are present.

Beautiful town square. Concert almost every night. It's a nice place to walk after dinner, or any time of the day.
Ananases A Arruda is a historic pineapple plantation on the Azore islands that offers free tours and has a gift shop selling pineapple products. The staff are friendly and the greenhouses display various stages of pineapple production from planting to harvesting. The orchard is an interesting place to visit and the cafe serves delicious pineapple-flavored treats. It's an excellent spot for learning about pineapples, and the gift shop provides great souvenirs.
I love it! You learn so much about pineapple and the shop is perfect for souvenirs!

Small plantation, where you will have free self guided tour (you will be given a paper has all the information you needed), the staff are kind, the juices and pastry sooo delicious. Overall I would recommend you to visit.
Note: google map may take you to road with no entry try to pin the parking space instead so you will be taken to the right road

Sao Miguel has the only pineapple plantation in Europe. Something you can't miss when visiting Portugal's best kept secret. Although Sao Miguel does not have a tropical climate, the Azoreans have managed to grow this plant on their lovely island.
On the outskirts of Ponta Delgada is the pineapple plantation Plantação de Ananases Augusto Arruda. Pineapples are one of the most important products of the Azores. The pineapple was bought from Brazil to be cultivated on the islands and has evolved into its own unique fruit. Instead of growing for 6 months, the Azores pineapple is grown for 2 years, although it ends up being smaller than the average pineapple and being much more sour and less sweet.

Great place to visit and see how pineapples are grown on the island. There is also a lovely giftshop where you get free tastings of pineapple liquor. You can also purchase the liquor alongside a lovely assortment of other items.

Great option for a fast and free pineapple plantation.
Friendly staff that were bilingual.
Very professional movie, with subtitles in English, presented in comfortable space in the plantation house.
Went on a Saturday around lunch.
Easy to get to from downtown punta delgado/airport.
Clean, well organized and nice gift shop.
They have a nice area that could have offered sandwiches, cake, coffee, samples of liqueur or sell pineapples.
Unfortunately, they had nothing in this space.
Gift shop was nicely done but poorly lighted. Served liqueur samples in the back which crowded tye space.

Cool little plantation. Free tour to walk around. The gift shop is very high end souvenirs and expensive. And there’s only liquor to try, no other pineapple snacks
Alessandra Camargo — Google review
Self-guided tour when i went there; plenty of greenhouses for you to explore and marvel at your own leisure. Their gift shop has a small section to sell pineapple jams/chutney and liquor (i believe the chutney was 7 euros per jar). Interestingly they did not sell fresh pineapples which was a small disappointment. The rest of the gift shop was nice but random… they sold jewelry and crystals (rose quartz, labradorite, amethyst, etc); abalone shell jewelry; pineapple themed souvenirs including tea towels and more jewelry.
Gloria Lau — Google review
Nice place for a short visit but there wasn’t much explanation about the process. Was able to walk around and view the pineapples being grown. They have a decent sized gift shop where you can buy pineapple related items and a small outdoor cafe area. Not sure how it compares to the other pineapple plantations on the island but an opportunity for a short tour explaining would be ideal.

My first pineapple plantation I have ever visited. The little leaflet explains the history of the plantation. The lovely ladies at the gift shop are very helpful. You can taste pineapple liqueur and order juice, coffee etc next to the souvenir shop. It was a well worth visit!

Unique place to visit and friendly staff. The mixture of green houses allow you to see the different stages of pineapple production from planting all the way to harvest. Interesting spot to visit if you can. The cafe is worth a visit too for all things pineapple flavoured. It's also free entry.

Free visit to the greenhouses, they let you into about 6 greenhouses. Local shop a big disappointment, small free liquor tasting, lot of tourist junk not related to pineapple. Unfriendly staff.
If you want to taste pineapple, go to the second platage (also free) - Plantação de Ananás dos Açores.

I get it that it’s a self paced/lead “tour”-and it’s free…. But, it basically was just peeking in some hothouses, some with nothing in and others with pineapples in various shapes and stages. The gift shop is adjacent and sells lots of useless stuff and some local crafts as well. We went to a different tour after this one as we felt we did not get anything out of it. Would not repeat.

Really beautiful and great to see how an organic pineapple is grown. The gift shop was fantastic and the staff was top notch. Items they sell were relevant to the farm. I would recommend a visit and free pineapple samples in the store.

If you want to learn how pineapples are grown, this is a fantastic place. You can take a self-guided tour around the plantation and learn everything about the process. The place also has a small shop in which you can buy anything made from pineapples: jam, bags, clothes etc. On the premises there is also a cafe to relax and taste different pineapple products.

Very friendly pineapple plantation with informative staff. You can see different stages of the development of the pineapples which is very interesting. However, it doesn't take that long to visit, we did it in around 15 minutes. The souvenir shop is quite well stocked but the pineapple products are relatively expensive.

If you don't have a lot of time to visit sao miguel, I suggest you to skip this visit. You get to enter 5 places where pineapple are growing. They are not the same age so it's interresting, but nothing much. We bought the pineapple sweet and sour jam and had it with bread and cheese and it was AMAZING!

Free experience to view all the pineapples and learn about the process. You also get a free shot of the pineapple liqueur they sell. They sell several pineapple based desserts such as pineapple pastel de nata, which was absolutely delicious, and pineapple ice cream. Clean toilets on site as well free of charge.

If you're going alone, ask for help in the store and they give you a leaflet explaining how pineapple grows in greenhouses. Try the pineapple liquor too. And they have a small bar on the left side of the store.
The Gruta do Carvão is a large lava tube on the outskirts of Ponta Delgada on the island of Sao Miguel in Portugal. It is an ancient cave that was formed by a lava flow and contains many geological features, such as stalactites and stalagmites. The Gruta do Carvão is also known as the Monumento Natural de Sao Miguel.
Only wish we'd done the FULL experience - For which I'll remind you - Don't wear whites or trendy clothes if you don't want iron ore stains on them. Bring clothes for purpose, especially if you're on the long tour, crawling through areas etc. We wanted the long tour ourselves but they didn't have the slots! Very cool though & particularly the guide's knowledge & energy. Top points.
Dan Tonkin — Google review
The short visit is too short indeed but you actually only can visit 200m of the cave.
Guide was very clear and nice with the group.
Clara Ruiz — Google review
This is a must do, so cool! We did the short tour which lasted about 45 minutes. You have plenty of time to take photos and look around. Rodrigo was our guide and he did a fantastic job explaining everything. You get to see two different parts of the lava tube and there's open space so it's not tight. Email or call to make a reservation in advance.

A short but very informative excursion. Unique subterranean structure, supercool guide! Needs to be booked in advance.
Aleksandra Laucuka — Google review
So... Sorry but I'm going to be scathing. Unfortunately I made the lava tunnels on the Reunion Island before and there.. so it seems like a huge gag. You pay 15€ to stay in front of the entrance to the tunnels, you barely walk inside (with my photos it's good you've already seen everything). During all the session, you are encouraged to book the "long" tour the next time, the one where you only explore a few hundred meters of underground. It is abused ! Fortunately the guide was adorable and explained perfectly well and took the time.
Marcel Patulacci — Google review
We opted for a short tour. You go to two places. The guide was funny and passionate about her job. It was perfect cos it rained, but other than that, it's very limited what you will see. We booked via email.
Barbara Kasasa — Google review
It was really nice to observe the magma channels where the lava would go through. The guide explained how it all worked.
Duarte Saraiva — Google review
This is a great experience.
You must book in advance. For safety reasons there are only guided tours and for due to space limitations there are a set number of visits and spots per day. The standard visit is only a couple hundreds of meters underground but if you are planning to go to Azores some months in advance I advise you to contact them and try to book the longer trip - 1km. They do it once a week in the winter and triple during summer time.
Still these are in so high demand that it might be difficult.
The cave is impressive and one learns a lot about the magma the cave formation and you get answered anything you throw at the guide.
Don't miss this out.

Great experience and interesting to discover. Definitely worth a try. I'd you want to book the long tour however, you may need to book a month in advance, and the short tour might a day or two.

Short tour of 45 min. Was nice but not a must-see. €8,- for adults and €5,- for children. Make sure you do a reservation.
Longer tours of 3 hours are also available but reservation 1-2 months ahead is necessary.

I took the short tour. It is an interesting short segment of a lava tube cave, rather easy to navigate. The tour guide was very friendly and explained things well.
Adrians Netlis — Google review
We found our visit to the caves to be very worthwhile. The guides are excellent and the visit gives a valuable insight into the geology of the Azores as well as the chance to experience lava tubes which was a first for us. We did the 45 minute tour which visits 2 sections of the lava tubes and access is very easy with no scrambling or crawling, and hard hats are provided. However, you can also do a much longer 2-3 hours trip which is more demanding. You can park immediately outside the caves entrance but make sure to book in advance.
Niall Urquhart — Google review
Our guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. The cave itself was easy to navigate (we did the short tour version) and well lit for safety.
We came on a semi sunny day and in early December so there was no one else on our tour. Can’t beat 8 euros for a private experience!
CE W — Google review
Very friendly guides, make a reservation in advance through email! Too bad you only go about 50 meters inside the cave, but still it is worth your attention. And Hugo is a great guide!
Ondřej Koch — Google review
Firstly let me say this place is amazing but you have to book in advance. A couple of days for the short tour, and at least 4-6 weeks in advance for the long tour!
The short tour is great, about 30-45 mins and you visit two areas. It's really accessible for all ages and full of interesting info. Our guide was funny, well informed and genuinely seemed interested in the caves. Definitely worth a visit.
The long tour has limited capacity, in September 2023 it only ran around once a week for 5 people. We were told there are some areas where you would have to crawl a bit and some areas that were quite dark, bar your flashlight; but, if you are up for the adventure it seems very worthwhile.

This visit is guided and paid. You NEED to make a reservation. We loved it, our small child loved it. We had the small tour, it give us another experience of how the lava works. And it was worth it
The Santuário do Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres is a beautiful church in Ponta Delgada Acores. It's well worth visiting for its history, art, and tiles.

A place of worship to the patron of the city. A must visit of Ponta Delgada.
The Catholic Church of Saint Sebastian is a beautiful, intricate structure with elaborate facade and interior wood carvings. It features a clocktower and is located just outside of the city gates. The church underwent several changes throughout the centuries, but retains its Gothic style with Manueline details and Baroque elements. Visitors will enjoy the magnificent porticos that stand out on the facade.
Wonderful church full of things to see. Opened while COVID 19 and no problem to sit and pray for some minutes . Really beautiful place

Very interesting old church, Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião, with many elements, such as the ornate main entrance facing Portas da Cidade city landmark, built in the flowery and intricate so-called Manueline style (often observed in Lisbon).
The initial construction works on the church began in the first half of the XVIth century. As various other buildings in the Azores, the church combines baroque gilded opulence and stark blackish stone materials quarried locally using basalt lava rocks.

The Jose do Canto Botanical Garden is an amazing place with a vast landscape and rich natural resources. The garden contains a wide variety of impressive trees, along with an old manor, an old greenhouse, a chapel, and a beautiful stairway. If you're interested in plants and nature, this is definitely the place to visit!
Stunning...magical...magnificent...mysterious...beautiful...awe inspiring...historical...relaxing...majestic and marvelous. I could go on and on, but this botanical garden was absolutely gorgeous and the sun wasn't even shining the day we went. I can only imagine what it be like to see this garden in the splendor of the sun. Such an amazing place to visit.

Incredibly beautiful and peaceful botanical garden. The only downside is that it's not free - there's a 5 euro entrance fee. The silver lining of this is that it's very tranquil and empty compared to the other free botanical gardens in the city. It's easy to find your way around the garden and it's worth exploring around for an hour or two. There's also a bar serving cheap beer around the half-way point which was a pleasant surprise!
Sean Miller — Google review
A must visit for garden lovers. Certainly some old growth/heritage trees with global, endemic, and horticultural species. Kauri, banyan, oaks, palms, cycads. Casually laid out, minimal interpretation and directional signage which was fine for me but it would have been nice to see some more. Not terribly accessible so if you have additional needs plan on bumpy cobblestones, moss paths, and some stones and grass. Overall a lovely variety and a little oasis tucked in the city.
Kiva Victoria — Google review
I loved the garden! very large for being downtown in Ponta delgada. I wouldn't say it was the most manicured, but i think it that added to the appeal, it felt more isolated than it really was. It wasn't very much to enter either and the amount of different plants there was impressive.
Noah Michael — Google review
Very poor maintained park, certainly not worth the 5 euro entry. Paths are overgrown, trash between plants, cars and trucks driving through the park / parked randomly. Nothing good to see here. Very disappointed.
Instead, I recommend to visit the palace gardens next door (to the west of this park for 2 euro) or the public (free) park that is a 5 minute walk south-west of this one.

Very nice botanical garden in the city center of Ponta Delgada. Entry costs 4 EUR which allows you to walk freely in the very spacious garden as long as you want, with a brochure. Definitely worth spending an hour (or two) in during your Ponta Delgada visit.

Very nice gardens with plenty of benches to sit down and relax.
€5 admission fee and it comes with a map of the gardens.
There are clean toilets located near the Palace, the ones next to the Pond were locked.
The gentleman working at the ticket booth is very friendly and will give you a quick explanation as he hands you the map.
Doors close at 7 pm but you can stay longer, if by the time you leave the door is closed all you have to do is ring the bell located just below the security camera near the entrance and someone will open the door for you remotely.

Seriously, visit any of the other municipal free-gardens that are more welcoming, community oriented, and better cared for … the admission here is 5 Euros and albeit impressive specimens in this garden, they’re not well tended. Maybe during Spring/Summer there might be better blooms, but all the buildings were closed & private when we visited; And park benches are not abundant and not placed where you want them, to contemplate botanical specimens; Almost nobody (no visitors) in the garden. It’s very OK IMHO to skip this site.

This garden is of a decent size and you can easily spend an hour here. It’s 5€ to enter. It’s amazing that this place was started 200 years ago and it’s been really well preserved. There are amazing trees, plants and flowers. There is a bamboo forest and those were the thickest and tallest bamboos I’ve ever seen.
Jen S — Google review
Very lovely park. Incredible tree specimens. There's a $5 fee to enter. Although it is in some ways comparable to the free park just down the street it does have a different kind of beauty and it's nice because there are fewer people there. You can also see a cork tree and a paper tree. The bamboo forest is also very nice and the trails wind in and out of the forest and it does have the feel of being a lot more distant and remote once you were in there.

An absolute MUST for a great local walking adventure. The gardens were much larger than expected, which was a great surprise and didn’t feel rushed since we had no other plans. We spend a good 2 hours enjoying the many (and well labeled) trees and plants. We came in February when many of the plants and trees were dormant but still very much worth the visit. There a good bathroom options throughout and very easy to access trails. Loved the wild roaming chickens with their baby chicks!!

Beautiful and calm botanical garden with some magnificent trees that are something you usually don't see in nature.
David Lah — Google review
Once, a long long time ago, this little botanical garden must have been a jewel.
But today, strolling on its walkways it clearly feels unloved, overgrown, unmaintained. Don't dare to take the small trails of the main road.
The rose garden is anything but a wild overgrown grass field.
Don't hold the stair handles, except if you want tetanus, they are rusted to the core.
Toilets are dirty. The bar, a small trailer in a corner of the gardens near what looks like a pool, is rather unwelcoming.
Wave the entry fee, it probably just to covers the cost of the people who make you pay it.
Or set a reasonable fee that will allow the grounds to be somewhat better maintained.
Avoid the place if you get easily depressed.
The Mercado da Graça is a farmers' market located in Ponta Delgadas, which sells fruit, vegetables, fish and meat as well as a large selection of cheese. It is a great place to purchase regional products and the vendors are friendly. The market is currently under renovation and will be open later this year.
It's underground in the parking garage currently, as the upstairs in under renovation. Such a great market! I made out like a bandit, piles of fruit/ vegetables/ things I've never seen for the change in my pocket. And all the vendors are so friendly!

If you show up and want to cry because the market is empty, don't! Just be like these nice aunties and go downstairs (normally the parkade) due to construction. There will be fruit sellers down there.
It seems that the going price for pineapples is now €5.99/kg but there are a few cheaper alternatives.
Had pineapples all around the world (Taiwan, Hawaii, etc) and these are probably my least favourite but still fun to come try.

Underground fruit/veggie and craft market. I went on a Saturday and parked in a nearby underground garage. The vendor I tried to buy some fruit from **did not take credit card** and at the time I had no cash, so I did not stay much. I didn't see anyone else paying with card, but it also mostly looked like people from the city. I wandered around a little to the butcher, fish, craft area. Everything looked clean and fresh.

The market was open and some butchers one fishery and several vegetable shops were open. Most of the market was closed, it is winter and beginning of the year so that's expectable. Nevertheless we got what we needed and everybody was super friendly. And a great place to visit. Ask the fisherman about their products they love to tell you about the fish or just watch them do their work. The facilities were clean and everything was working properly. Great place to shop.

Great fruits and vegetables market located in the underground parking. Nobody shouts, nobody tries to swindle you, everyone is very polite and accept credit cards. Stark contrast to the market on Madeira. Highly recommended, fruits are of a really good quality.

Nestled beneath the bustling city, this underground local market provides an authentic glimpse into the local way of life. It's the perfect spot to shop for fresh vegetables, fruits, and an array of other products. While the atmosphere exudes a delightful charm, it's true that the selection of goods may not be overwhelmingly extensive. Nevertheless, the overall experience is a rewarding and genuine immersion into the local culture, making it a must-visit for those seeking an authentic taste of the area.

The best time to visit this place is Saturday morning. When comming on other days you can see only half of it, as some of the stands/booths will be empty. There is great variety of fruits and vegetables, with the labels stating the origin (when its "regional", then you see the name of the island). Pineapples and bananas are a must, but the local cheese shop is also very good place to check.
Pineapples Santo António is a large plantation that offers interpretive tours for visitors to learn about the growth of Azorean pineapples. The tour includes stops at greenhouses and a film about the growing process. In addition, there is a store with pineapple products and information from the start of the plantation. Visitors can enjoy a glass of pineapple lemonade while on the short tour, which provides detailed information about their business operations.
A must go for Azores, they take you in and let you watch a 7 minute video and then take you on a tour inside of the greenhouses. Our guide spoke very good English and the Tour is free. We got the pineapple, the ice cream, and the Kima. I definitely recommend.

Tiago is a great guide and explains every thing in detail. The tour is free and starts with a short video, then tour to the greenhouses where you can see the pineapples in various stages and then the shop which has interesting things made out of pineapples including beer.
Vishesh Saxena — Google review
We spent about 15-20 minutes here. You first walk in and they have you watch 6 minutes video about how the pineapples are grown and some history. Then they take you over to the green houses and you get to see the pineapple green house. They answer any questions. Then you go back to main store and they show you there products and try and sell you the products.
Curtis Dietze — Google review
I enjoyed the tour about how pineapples are grown and harvested - takes ~2 years to harvest compared to ~1 year for south american ones, hence the premium pricing on these! There are no samples here but u can purchase a whole pineapple and they will cut it for you free of charge. 9.8euros/kg, and we spent just under 7 euros on the sweetest and juiciest one we have ever had! The decor of their plantation was cute as well and they also sell pineapple jams, liquor and little trinkets (pineapple themed magnets and totes) as well as pineapple gelato. Pineapple KIMA is available as well. They have a small seating area outside with two tables; and a small parking lot (free).

Add this stop to your trip!! Thiago was great and gave us so much information. We had a great chat with him and he really made us feel welcome.

Videos are shown I'm English which make it easy to understand all the growing process of pinneaples. We went to green houses and saw all the stages. Very interesting.

Taken in charge very rapidly when entering. Small movie and visit. Would have liked to taste a pinneaple though.

Amazing to learn about the love and patience it takes to produce organic pineapple. The juiciest ever tasted.
Parque Atlantico is a vibrant shopping center that offers a diverse range of specialty stores, eateries, and entertainment options. The mall boasts an impressive selection of unique items that are hard to find elsewhere, and the store staff are knowledgeable about their products and policies. It's a popular destination for tourists on transatlantic cruises looking for a break from nature. While the food court lacks local cuisine, it does offer several well-known American chains.
This store has many items I cannot find elsewhere. I like the style. I purchased an unusual hanging lamp and am very happy with it. The store staff are friendly, fluent in English and familiar with both the product requirements (such as bulb wattage for this particular lamp) as well as store policy. She took extra time to carefully wrap my item. I like this store and regularly stop by when I'm in Ponta Delgada.

Parque Atlantico IS THE BIGGEST mall on the biggest Island in the Azores. Super Market has the best deals on the island, has high end shopping and a food court on the top floor. Very nice place.
John Ovesen — Google review
Great stop off point on a transatlantic cruise. Was hoping for local food choices but found in food court all American chains.

Great shopping mall. Just about everything. At least it's open at Sunday as well.

Nice mall. Big food court.
Joerg Kirschner — Google review
Very nice mall, did not expect to find something like this in Sao Miguel. The food court is good and there are a lot of options. There's a hypermarket with tons of food, and the prices are great. We also went to a cute home goods store and a makeup store and found nice things there.
Alex Strasza — Google review
Vibrant city center mall offering a fantastic array of trendy clothing stores and a delightful food court on the top floor, complemented by an enjoyable cinema experience. A one-stop destination for fashion, dining, and entertainment enthusiasts.
Barun Kumar — Google review
A huge mall with lots of shopping stores, a big food court with a wide variety of options. Also here is the hypermarket for groceries. Free wifi is also available and the movie theater is inside as well.
Craig Lock — Google review
It's a shopping mall/complex so there's the usual mix of shops for clothes, homewares and pharmacy stuff.
There's a large supermarket selling some decent stuff, including portuguese hot chicken and has a good sized bakery.
The entrance to the mall has a life size sperm whale suspended above the escalators. There's an ex whaling boat on display in the lower mall, which is fascinating to see up close. There's often photo galleries popping up as well.
Oh and there's a cinema, which is also quite nice.
The food area is pretty comprehensive, with lots of choices, there's the usual, maccy D, burger king, kfc, but there's other choices that may appeal more, such as wok to go, and local Azorean or Portuguese outlets.
Just next to the mall is a good sized diy store which is really handy for loads of other stuff.

This is a small-medium sized mall, but probably the biggest on the island. It is modern and clean and there is a lot of underground parking available for free. The mall has two floors with an eating area and cinema upstairs too. There are a few shops and also a large supermarket at one end.
V C — Google review
Biggest shopping mall in Ponta Delgada. Nice ambience with several good quality stores! Cinema and Food court with several stands and mixed choice of food. Had a pleasant smell and not the usual bad mall food court smell. Very good opening times and hours of business. Will definitely go again!
Sao Bras Fort is a beautiful 16th century Portuguese fort located close to the sea in Ponta Delgada, on the island of Sao Miguel. The fort has a military museum and memorial to WWI casualties.
Visited prior to our flight out of the Azores. We were impressed with the collection. We could have spent much more time there. Great historical collections in a wonderful space to exhibit the items.
Hallie Hawkins — Google review
Impressive collection of military and artillery war pieces. Was only 3€ per person to enter and was pretty empty, giving us good time to read through the history of each item.
It’s nice to walk around the military base, view over the wall to the ocean, and visit all the rooms with relics from many different periods.

Small museum, well kept fort
Ilona — Google review
It is a great museum, very informative, and located in a historic place. It has an extensive collection, including firearms, uniforms, vehicles, etc.
Bianca Sosnovski — Google review
Very interesting collection of military historical pieces. There is plenty to see and discover. You really need to go through all the passages to pass all the rooms. The views of Ponta Delgada and the port from the fort roof are excellent.
Dieter Morre — Google review
For the 3 Euro entrance fee this place is an excellent value and if you're interested in history and the military you shouldn't miss this place. Enter through the gate of the fortress and there's a room to the right to purchase a ticket. Look up. From there pass through to the left to take a look at a selection of anti-aircraft weapons and a pair of early Uni-mogs. Through to the right are a series of rooms and tunnels displaying assorted infantry weapons and uniforms. It's really quite good and definitely worth the price. After looking through the rooms take the stairs or ramp to the top of the fortress to see the installation guns looking out over the Atlantic Ocean. Finally, after leaving the fortress go around to the street and have a look at the First World War memorial. Highly recommended.

Would recommend checking this place out. They give a family discount so for the five of us, it only cost 5 euros which is amazing, where as a solo is 3 euros a person.
One of the best forts I have yet to visit. I loved the displays of the weapons through the years during the recent wars. The tunnels were neat to walk in and climbing the walls to the top offered some cool views.

Very interesting military museum. With artillery, cannons, uniforms and musical band instruments. Fantastic views of the port and city.
Alexis Pacheco — Google review
Incredible collections, and love how the way they’re displayed. Going through the passageways is very exciting!
Suzette E — Google review
Old fort used as a military museum. It has a small and weird collection of military stuff, guns uniforms and old cars and artillery that are rusty and not very well looked after. The history of how the Azores fared in WW2 is nice.
Axel — Google review
The entrance fee is 3 euros per adult and 1 euro per kid. So it's fairly cheap. Once in the museum there are no clear directions and you figure it out as you go. Most of the things you see are identified but there is no one there to guide you or to answer questions. Part of the fort is moldy and very humid which made us not want to spend much time in there. The highly was visiting the roof of the fort which allows us to have a good view on the port and the city.

Forte de Sao Bras is a fortress that currently functions as a museum, but also as an active military (small) base. The information boards are neatly in Portuguese and English, making it also accessible to foreign tourists. The museum shows how the war history of Portugal originated and what kind of weapons and equipment the army walked around with (as early as the 18th century). Well worth a visit.
****
Great collection of historical military weaponry. Some great history of Portuguese military units and soldiers.
James Arvidson — Google review
We accidentally stumbled upon this place while taking a walk and glad we did. The museum offered quite a lot more background to the military significance of Ponta Delgada through various wars and conflicts with artifacts throughout. Was by no means a spectacular museum or “high quality”, but instead an informative short stroll through the fort.

Great place to visit. Staff was very nice. Lots of history on display.

From the exterior one would never know how extensive this museum is. The 3 euro cost of admission is a steal. You can easily spend a few hours exploring the different sections. Highly recommended for anyone interested in military history

Only 3€ to enter this ancient military base and visit hundreds of used equipments from medical to anti-tank weapons. Leo tells the history of Portuguese African colonization and liberation wars.
Lawrence Miglialo — Google review
Fantastic military museum with so much on display. We spent about an hour in there and it's only 3 euros admission. Well worth a visit.
Mandie Dunning — Google review
For the fee you pay there is a lot to see which was great but it was let down by the condition of the place. The building was mouldy inside which meant items aren’t being well preserved for the future further the outside courtyard area the roof was literally blowing off with parts already broken and there was people cutting pieces of metal and soldering them with sparks flying and light flashing and no regard for peoples safety just a meter or so away from them as there were not proper barriers
The Carlos Machado Museum is located in the old Santo Andre convent, Ponta Delgada's second convent. It houses a variety of exhibits including art and taxidermy, as well as historical artifacts from the Azorean islands' history. The museum is well worth a visit for anyone interested in history or culture on the island.
Great place to visit if you love history. Very affordable and no lineups, at least not during the week.

Really great value for money and interesting taxidermy pieces. A great wet weather activity. The old convent with it's iron bars is fascinating. My only wish is that there were more information written in English or an audio aid. Other than that, loved it.

Definitely worth the 5 EUR for the complete visit! No lines and no reservations needed.
There is a lot to see, I was especially fascinated by the natural part of the museum with all the taxidermied animals and also the natural history of Sao Miguel and the Azores.
They let us keep our bags in a locker for free and there was also a clean bathroom available. The staff members were friendly and helpful.

Only by paying 5€ (or 2.5€ if you are under 25 years old or a teacher), you get access to 3 different museums. The meseum have different themes such as religion, the history of the Acores and botanics. I highly recommend

We stopped here on a whim before heading to the airport and it really exceeded our expectations. We anticipated enjoying the taxidermy collection (and we certainly did), but ended up being equally impressed with the exhibits on the unique geology and history of the island. We went on a Sunday and were told it was free, but we'd happily have paid the admission. Definitely worth a stop if you're in São Miguel!
Danielle Arthur — Google review
Very interesting mix of subject matter, from Natural history and taxidermy to Geology to Convent history. Definitely worth checking out... something will capture your interest.
William Greenways — Google review
If you don't know what to do with your child when it rains, this museum is a very good idea. It contains many naturalistic relics: stuffed animals (among which a huge scaring white shark, sunfishes, a young spermwhale, strange creatures from the abyss, stuffed priolos, a calf with two heads, cows, a panther, lots of birds etc...) and bones of dolphins and spermwhales. There is also a room dedicated to the geology and history of the island, a room dedicated to rocks, another one to insects and invertebrates. If you like stuffed animals and skeletons and you visit Rome (Italy) don't miss the "Museo Civico di Zoologia" next to Villa Borghese.
Lorenzo Di Biagio — Google review
It was fascinating place especially people who are interested in nature history. I would say the inside is not big, but there are a lot of things to see. Sometimes I was confused because I didn’t know which nameplate to be referred. In general, I enjoyed a lot!
Hiroki Nagasawa — Google review
One of the weirdest museums l have ever visited in Europe- the taxidermy section is in the usual unfashionable display cabinets and all exhibits rather disgusting, especially the false eyes and teeth. However, they do add a bit of humour to this morbid collection and the freaky disabled calves are a rare sight. The rest of the museum is the convent which has a beautiful chapel with a spectacular wooden carved alter.
For anyone wishing to visit this alongside the other 2 local Carlos Machado museums you can get a reduction- a mere 3€ for all 3, so go to all.

This hidden gem is a favorite among locals for leisurely strolls, family picnics, and dog walks. Pinhal da Paz is is an excellent place for a day outing. The park is lush and offers excellent facilities and amenities. Within its wide area, there are many walking tracks, including to the peak with its Mirante that allows you to see the north and south sides of the Island. There are plenty of barbecue areas (including tables) and the the wood is provided by the rangers. There's also children playground areas, which will keep them entertained. Amazing park with stunning views of the island and lots of entertaining areas. The path to the lookout is enjoyable and well marked, with several kind of plants and trees that change while you climb up the hill. The lookout is simple but offers beautiful scenarios over the island. Despite the cloudy weather, we were still able to see most of the surrounding areas and the coastline. We then headed towards the park, which hosts lots of bbq facilities that are well looked after. The park also features a kids playground, a little chapel, and a secluded area with deers and few other animals. Overall we really enjoyed it.

Beautiful 360 views at the lookout. Nice enclosure with animals. Great picknick place. Downside, closes too early.
The Catholic Church of Saint Joseph located in the historic centre of Ponta Delgada is a beautiful church with an imposing facade that is not to be missed by passersby. The interior of the church is decorated with beautiful glazed-tile panels and altars decorated with gilded wood, making it a must-see for visitors to the island. Sundays at 11am sees the arrival of a live choir to add an extra layer of enchantment to the proceedings.
This is the church that my great grandfather was baptized in. The altar is beautiful with gold leaf everywhere. The church is dedicated to both St. Joseph and to Mary’s Immaculate conception. It also has a side altar to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary.
