Established back in 1997, AHHAA Science Centre is the largest science museum in the country. It offers a variety of interactive exhibits and a planetarium that cater to visitors of all ages. This place is perfect for kids starting from as young as four or five years old and adults can also have fun exploring its offerings. The museum's holiday season was especially impressive and left visitors very satisfied with their experience.
This is the place for all ages-kids were super excited and didn't want to leave. Will definitely come here again after some time.

Very interactive museum. There are lots of interesting entertainments for both children and adult - various science inventions with descriptions and practical use, exibitions, also sport activities (basketball, running, football). Good that tickets are for all day and you can easily go in and out to/from museum.

Great museum experience. we visited many science museums in different countries and I can definitely say that this is one of the best. excellent zoning, a lot of topics and everyone can find something interesting individually. Plus a lot of cool visual objects where you can take good photos. To visit the city with children - the number one place. Particularly pleased with the huge space that presents new exhibitions every year and motivates repeated visits every season. Thanks to the leadership.

Perfect place for those starting from age of 5 years (may be 4 as well). Also grown ups can find some fun. Kids are entertaining themselves all day long and they are not willing to leave this place Definately will visit this place in near future again! Proud that our neighbours have such attractive place.

During our first visit to Tartu Ahhaa science center was 1st in the too to must go places and we did it. It is very interesting and full of activities. Kids just love it but there are interesting things for parents as well. Price for 2 parents and 1 kid was 54 together with planetarium ticket, and it’s full day multi enter ticket. Cant tell that planetarium was great, but from content perspective it was definitely great and interesting. We learned new things. There is a restaurant as well, so you can enjoy whole day there. I think we’ll definitely come back there again when we’ll be back in Tartu.

A great museum that everyone can enjoy. We are a science teacher and a physics graduate, yet we still learnt things! It is open late, so it can be left until later on a one-day trip to Tartu or a great place to go in the rain - there's an inside exhibition about sport with lots of practical exercise equipment to burn off a little (or large) one's steam.
The Museum shows science very practically and displays some of the more complex ideas at play.
We couldn't visit the planetarium as we arrived later in the day for shows in English. We would suggest checking in advance if you have specific language needs

Not much of a fan of kids' illusions, like the moving bridge or the gravity rooms, butnI certainly was a fan of the second floor! Bombastic planetarium, amazing room of humans' anatomy, involving a couple of examples of organs/babies in jars and, my favorite, teddy bear with teeth 🤭 Recommend visiting either with kids or with friends

This is a great experience. Loads to see and it's all interactive. Very clean everywhere. All the info is in all languages which is helpful. I would recommend at least an hour but you could easily take 4 hours to do it all. The cafe is really nice too, very bright and cheerful.
Great clean and spacious rooms. Clean bathrooms and kitchen. The beds are kind of small but passable for me because I am a small person but otherwise the apartments are great. I would recommend staying here.

Location is very good. Close to the center. 2 rooms are wide and clean. Big TV in the hall.
Negative points · No any hooks or shelf's in bathroom! So if you want to take a shower you have to keep a towel in hand or leave it on floor.
It's very required any additional wardrobe or coat rack in rooms. You forced to store clothes on the floor.
No microwave in the kitchen.
Huge window door is very close to the bed, so you will hear all what is happens on the street, especially garbage collector truck early morning.
Andris Zveja — Google review
The room was very small, bathroom even smaller. It was like hotel room, but then without service. It's bit much to stay there for six nights with all the trash. And only 1 big and 1 small towel, no bathmats was provided. There's a little kitchen which is next to your bed without the ventilation hood also I'm pretty sure there's a leak from the sink. So to call this an apartment is not accurate. As I saw the pictures and I was expecting to have more space.... For o e or two nights I recommend it, as it is fairly new.

The Estonian National Museum is a remarkable, contemporary structure which showcases Estonian culture and folk art. The museum's permanent exhibit provides an in-depth account of national prehistory and history, with particular emphasis on the Russian occupation. Additionally, the 'Echo of the Urals' exhibition gives an overview of the various peoples who speak languages within the Estonian language family. The museum features modern design and technology to tell impressive stories about the past of Ugro-Finnic populations.

The Estonian National Museum is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in the country's history and culture. The museum's collection is extensive and fascinating, providing a detailed look into the lives and traditions of Estonian people throughout the ages. The building itself is also impressive, with a modern and sleek design that blends seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. The museum's exhibitions are well-curated, informative, and engaging, making for a memorable and enriching experience. If you've been roaming enough and start feeling hungry, there's also a restaurant and you can pick a quick snack or a full meal. Overall, the Estonian National Museum is a wonderful place to spend a few hours and learn more about Estonia's rich heritage.

Impressive and imposing building. It's a short drive from the city and easy to locate. Parking is free.
The museum has a number of exhibits. We planned a full day here after visiting the upside-down house which was on the way.
The displays are mainly locale exhibits and provide an extensive engaging narrative of Estonia, it's artifacts, people, land, history, climate, trade, culture, animals and art.
It's a huge place to walk and we rested at lunch at the museum restaurant. The decor within was another work of art. Love the clean, spacious layout.
We had an unhurried lunch of fried fish fillet with rice and a zesty salad, apple pastry and coffee. The food and drinks were inexpensive and so delicious. Service was personable.
We enjoyed our visit and will likely drop in again in the future.

Very beautiful museum but it is designed more like an art museum than a history one. There is no chronological order to follow, which made learning harder for me.
You are given cards with your language on them at the start, where you tap on the information screen and it switches to your language. Very cool.

Impressive building with generous volumes, it is interesting to see it and walk through.
Nice Estonian artists paintings (mainly modern period) in the temporary exhibition.
Permanent exhibition on finno-ugric people was very immersive, it will certainly please kids. The content was a bit poor.
The main permanent exhibition gallery on Estonia has interesting content but the setup makes it confusing and hard to navigate.

A great museum that is definitely worth a visit. I visited the museum with friends and we had a lot of fun to discover. Many different exhibits and a great contemporary architecture that catches the eye.
We spent three hours in the museum and also visited the restaurant "Pööriöö", where the food was very tasty.
It is worth planning at least 3-5 hours and be sure to visit the restaurant. :)
And also, did you know that the Estonian National Museum is the largest museum in Estonia? It doesnt get boring here and there are activities for both adults and kids.

The Estonian National Museum (Eesti Rahva Muuseum) is modern (2016?) and huge. It is on the site of what was a big USSR military base. It's a bit out of the way if you are staying in the Old City but worth the effort to get there.
Upon entering we were approached by a young woman working at the museum to ask us about our Cold War experiences which we recorded in a booth. We mention the drills at school where we ducked under our desks and covered our heads. Also the Cuban Missile Crisis.
There are numerous screens throughout the museum where you scan your ticket in order to get it to change to English.
The temporary exhibit described a number of interesting traditional superstitions common in Estonia.
The museum has a very extensive variety of subjects that it covers.
Downstairs was an exhibit ("Echo of the Urals" Finno-Ugric) about the various different people that are linguistically related to Latvian including Finns, Hungarians and Sami.

This is a very interesting museum if you are interested in learning about the history of Estonia. The museum has an enormous number of items on display, spanning Estonia's culture and history for the last 1000+ years. All of the items on display have electronic placards that use e-ink displays to change the language of their text. You just swipe your museum ticket on them and the language changes to the language chosen when you purchased your ticket. Really neat! We spent the entire afternoon there, trying to take it all in.
The museum also features a really nice restaurant. We started our visit with lunch there and it was excellent!
Greg Kondrasuk — Google review
The whole place is a work of art - tonnes of amazing minimalist design solutions to present tonnes of materials from the distant and recent past. It's interesting to even just seek out some displays and witness how those are presented. And the audio installations really help get submerged into the subject, specially with the Ural exhibit. Also one of the favorite bits was the solution with touching the displays with your ticket and it switching to your preferred language, that you ask for during the ticket purchase.
Speaking of tickets I do recommend getting a full ticket and setting aside some good 2-3h for the place.

TYPA letterpress and paper art centre is an interactive museum that caters to word enthusiasts, design lovers, and print aficionados. The museum showcases the history of printing and paper-making through a permanent display of machinery from different ages. It also features a rotating exhibition gallery and offers handmade notebooks for sale. Visitors can join an hour-long tour in English led by the museum director Lemmit, which includes demonstrations and the chance to make their own prints or paper on antique presses.
Very cool museum- really impressive collection of old letterpress machines and other equipment, that works! Choice of different old fonts used in newspapers- for example astrological or chess! Last one reminded old soviet times with chess exercises on the last page. You can try paper making or postcard pressing or some other workshops 👍♟📨

This was my "must see" of the day. The staff gave me a tour of the museum, accompanied by one of their resident artists. She shared the history of paper, from papyrus to recycled paper and then gave me then hands on opportunity to make a sheet. The paper portion of the tour also showed some examples of how paper is used for art.
The printing portion of the tour traced the history from hand-rolling ink to hand-operated and then powered printing machines. All of the machines are still used - in part to keep them operating and in part to keep traditions alive.

Overall a great experience!

Museum offeres several cool printing workshops. For most workshops you need to preorder by contacting Typa museum.
The workshops are for various skill level, from pre-school till grownups.

Absolutely fascinating tour into the world of letterpresses and paper making! Personnel passion to the subject really shows and they were super friendly. They only give guided tours and for a good reason: machinery is fully functional and they give live demos of those. You get to make your own paper and press your very own postcard. Kids (7 and 5 year old) were absolutely mesmerized by everything. Absolutely recommend this for everyone!

Beautiful oasis in the middle on Tartu. Most beautiful in the June when everything is starting to bloom (Peonys and after that roses) and is extra green but you'll find always and every day something new. One of the best places just to walk and enjoy the beautiful weather. You can also have a picnic or play with children on the grass and playground area on the other side of the park.
In winter time it is good idea to check in the glass houses!
I would say that if you come to Tartu just for a few hours then it would be good idea to visit Botanical Garden and Werner cafe (although there are other good cafes also close by like Tüümian and Säde). You can just walk in into the garden, no ticket but when visiting glass houses then there is separate ticket.
PS! If you're really looking then you may see cat and a squirrel who are living there.
PS2! Of course all photos are made by myself in this exact botanical garden during my visits.

Went there with two small boys and had a ton of fun.
The temporary exhibition was about teddy bears. Recognized a lot of them.
The permanent one had me walking through memory lane. A ton of things were straight out of the 1980s, from when I was playing.
Add an outdoor carousel as a cherry on top of the cake and there is the perfect recipe.

I really enjoyed this museum, especially my son. Museum is quite big, so it is not like for 5 minutes visit. Two floors, many rooms with very different toys. It was very nice to see old toys from 90th, so nastolgic. What I really liked that there are many places for playing also, and a small but cosy food court with an drink and food machines. Even once you should visit this place if you stay in Tartu with your kids. The only complaint is about parking, it was quite hard to find free parking there, because I'm not local and didn't manage how to pay for parking, as there are no parking payment machines.

Skulptuur "Suudlevad tudengid" / 'The Kissing Students' sculpture and fountain
Skulptuur "Suudlevad tudengid" or 'The Kissing Students' sculpture and fountain is a must-visit symbol in Tartu, Estonia. The bronze statue depicts two students kissing under an umbrella, representing everlasting love. It's a popular spot for lovers and newlyweds to visit, with traditional Estonian weddings often taking place there. Designed by Mati Karmin, the composition also functions as a fountain.
The statue sits directly in front of city hall, and in winter time is surrounded by an ice skating rink.
A very busy and lively place during the winter months.

Fun place for a short visit. It was just steps on the way to the National museum.
When inside, the floors are tilted at weird angles and the fixtures and furnishings are all invented. This gives the illusion that you are in an upside down house.
The strangely slanting flooring makes walking clumsy and causes vertigo. Some dizziness hit me after spending some time in here.
Unique experience but few can stay inside. Walking around the house is interesting too. There are some benches outside and from here it is enjoyable to appreciate this large art installation.

A truly amazing concept. Just an 'instagrammable' place. However, there is not much to see, the house is tiny. And a drawback is that there is vibration. When you are inside, you might get dizzy. This is what all of my friends experienced. I felt it too (don't have any problems with that). But this case was an exception. Spent there around 15 mins. A bit too pricey. Generally, I think all children are amazed. As for adults, would not be so sure.

Entry fee 8.5 EUR is too high in comparison what you get for 14 in the Estonian National Museum next to this attraction. Looks interesting though.
The University of Tartu, a classical institution with 4 constituent colleges, was founded in 1632 by the King of Sweden and is widely recognized for its research excellence. The university buildings boast an impressive Gothic cathedral, originally constructed by German knights in the 13th century which was rebuilt several times including being transformed into a library in the early 19th century, now functioning as a museum showcasing student life. The university also houses a vast collection of exhibits that are both interesting and extensive.

i was planning to enroll in this university i read the conditions of admission they asked for high school results +80 at least for the toefl. I prepared it and got 88. by re-reading their conditions I see that they have increased the required score to 90. but what is worse on the dreamapply site it is specified that the toefls is no longer required because the bmat test compensates for it. the BMAT is scheduled for: February 19 So: I have 16 days to review a year of classes to ensure a score above 51. it is scientific knowledge that I acquired a long time ago but which requires a lot of maintenance and revisions, especially the small details. This causes me enormous stress and even disgust towards this university before I even set foot there. They exert pressure even before the students are admitted imagine when you are admitted, it reflects its poor organization, communication, and a financial pit the total registration will have cost me about 555 dollars in m enrolling in several universities the bill will quickly increase. requiring surprise exams at the last minute also benefits the academicians who organize them it's a vicious circle it will fix them to see you fail and re-register for the test and spend even more money. You are wasting not only money but also a year of your life waiting for a new registration session to open and hoping that the test link works and that the examiners will return the results to you before the end of registrations (read the comments on trustpilot about the toefl, ielts act). I forgot the registration will not cost only 555 usd there is the interview count 600 usd the plane ticket + hotel + transport + food = 2000 USD without being sure to be taken. it's odious to ask for +12k to exert all this pressure on students in debt

I studied there on 3 curricula and two were nice. Quite good university. Water tastes nice, but no good options for food. Toilets are clean. Friendly staff. Some buildings have nice views from top floors. Nice library. Faculties seem underfunded and understaffed.

Tartu Town Hall Square, situated in the heart of Tartu, Estonia, is a captivating destination for visitors. The square is surrounded by well-preserved buildings that showcase the city's history and charm. The iconic Tartu Town Hall with its Gothic-style facade stands as a prominent feature. Lined with cafes and restaurants, the square offers a charming atmosphere for exploration.
A two city block area leading up to the city hall building. In wintertime there was a giant christmas tree, an ice skating rink, and multiple temporary shops and wintery displays set up in the plaza.

Town Hall is an amazing place, and the vibe is extraordinary. Lots of nice cafés and restaurants around. One can visit in the evenings to enjoy the surroundings.
Some upgradation work is going on as the city has been declared as the cultural capital of Europe, and there are 300+ events lined up in 2024. Town Hall Square is the centre of all tge events and activities.

The most beautiful Christmas Market in Estonia😍 Ice rink in winter time around the statue (free if you have your own skates otherwise you can rent for ca 3 euros), small glass cottages with different activities, snacks and drinks and a real fire. Created for locals but as tourists were very welcome, too 😊

Beautiful! Lots of cafes, restaurants, and nice old buildings. Some might call it the heart of Tartu!
Really cool museum! It is super interactive and weaves the history of beer and A. Le Coq really well. The museum is a great balance of "typical museum stuff" like artefacts, pictures and movies as well as more new things, like interactive smells and touching exhibits. The tasting at the end is fun too. I recommend if coming to Tartu!

Interesting and interactive museum. Friendly staff. Highly recommended for everyone, even if you're not a beer-lover it's still interesting. Extra nice with the beer tasting included in the ticket! Free parking and easy to access.

Well designed, well curated and highly interactive museum within the operating brewery.
Fascinating to learn the history of beer brewing and how this specific business evolved over the years. You can get a real sense of the brewing process and there are several fun facts about the company’s history.
The beer tasting at the end is really good as well. Highly recommended!

The sculpture "Father and Son" is a unique and thought-provoking piece of art located in Tartu. It offers an original interpretation of an image and a fountain with a focus on romanticism, standing out from the political and cultural sculptures found in the square. While some find it interesting and captivating, others may feel it's somewhat strange, prompting curiosity about its meaning.
Beautiful, thought provoking statues. If there is discomfort it must be in the eyes of the beholder, as these two look quite at ease.

The University of Tartu Museum is a fascinating attraction that showcases science and the city's history through exhibitions and interactive displays. Housed within a centuries-old cathedral with seven floors, visitors can explore the rich history and oldest elevator in Tartu. The museum offers students an opportunity to learn about the university's illustrious past, making it an ideal destination for those looking to expand their knowledge. Additionally, the museum features a coffee shop and souvenir store, making it an excellent stop for tourists exploring Tartu.
This museum was a surprise discovery for our family during a drizzle October afternoon in Tartu. The various exhibitions are beautifully presented and it's clear that they've been put together with care. The love of science seeps through in every nook of every room.

Great interactive place, which would also be extremely fun for the children. And it's located in a reconstructed part of an astoundingly beautiful ruins, which you must also explore and visit the tower.

Good and interesting museum. Building is old but inside it’s very fresh and beautiful. There are several places for kids activities. Tickets are cheap. Together with tower visit it’s 7 eur/person. Staff is very kind and helpful. At the entrance they explained where to start and helped to get into elevator. An old elevator was very interesting for our son. Expositions are nice, we most of all liked a science library in 5th floor.

I visited this place 10 days ago. There are 7 floors. For me, 4th floor is the most beautiful part. I would suggest university students to go there and learn more about university, how rich history it has.
Also, it is worth to be inside of this building. Oldest elevator in Tartu is here and it has interesting vibe and way of use.
So, take you 2.5 hours and learn more about UT. It will not be boring at all.

Amazing museum! Really recommend it to anyone visiting Tartu, even if you're staying here for only one day. While I was there, there was a great exhibition on happiness which was very informative and looked great. There were also exhibitions on e.g. the history of the University of Tartu which I think are a bit more permanent but still very new and with many authentic artifacts and a nice mixture of text signs and interactive things. Also, access to the towers if the cathedral are included, giving nice views (although trees will obstruct most of the city proper).
Toomemägi, also known as Toome Hill, is a significant historical and educational site in Tartu. It is home to various landmarks such as an observatory, an anatomical theater, statues of famous figures, the Old Observatory, and the ruins of Toomkirik. The hill offers a serene park where visitors can immerse themselves in the spirit of Tartu while exploring its rich history.
Toomemägi (Toome Hill) is place where you can feel the spirit of Tartu. Definetely one of the places people like to walk through different seasons - snowy winter, green spring and summer and of course colorful autumn. It is much more than just a park - every corner you meet with history - statues for famous people, Old Observatory and also you can find there old ruins of Toomkirik and also other side is museum.

Nice park, in summer everything is green. There is a small cafe and playground for the children as well.
Azar Safarov — Google review
When the university was finally reopened at the beginning of the 19th century, Emperor Alexander I took possession of Toomemäe University and a park and university buildings were built there. The anatomical rotund was the first to be completed, and soon the main building of the university, as well as the observatory. A university library was built on the ruins of a powerful medieval cathedral. A romantic stone hill - Musumägi - was built in the park and the former sand quarry - Kassitoome - was landscaped. There are many sculptures on Toomemäe (KE von Baer, N. Pirogov, Fr. R. Faehlmann, Fr. GW Struve, KJ Peterson and others) and buildings of architectural value: former Dome Church (now UT History Museum), Observatory, Old Anatomical, Supreme Court, English - and the Devil's Bridge.

The KGB Cells Museum, situated in a gray house on Riyamagi Mountain, offers a unique and somber exploration of Estonia's post-war liberation war. The museum showcases cells, punishment cells, and various artifacts that shed light on the crimes committed during the communist regime. It provides a heavy yet important educational experience, allowing visitors to understand the dark history of Russian occupation in Estonia.
Such an interesting piece of history that’s been preserved. It’s a heavy experience, not something that’s pleasant to learn about but important to understand and really well done. It’s scary to think about what has gone on in these rooms, but it’s nice that they’re now being used in an educational way. The exhibits are really well done.

A fascinating (but dark) exploration of the history of the Russian occupation of Estonia. The museum is self paced and self guided. It is great for any history buffs but not ideal for children. There is a small gift shop and a clean toilet on site. Tickets were seven Euros per adult.

It would be nice if there are more to discover. Museum may have interesting exhibition in the future. For now, it was about '' Russia - Georgia War 2008'' , the topic itself is interesting to me but the quality of exhibition was not good and it was only in Estonian

It has three floors with an exhibition in each floor. I don't think there is a permanent exhibit, so each visit might give a different experience.
Currently, there is a photographic exhibition about the artist's sister, one about Ado Vabbe, who influenced later Estonian artists and was referenced in other art museums, and book illustrations. I liked the latter.

Estonia has so much more to offer than just the capital Tallinn. 🇪🇪 If you are planning a trip to Estonia, make sure to check out South Estonia.
A new world will open up with forested areas where you can go on hikes, pick mushrooms and berries, learn about the traditions and customs of the Setos and Old Believers, visit small villages around Lake Peipus, enjoy delicious local dishes and meet many friendly people who are ready to offer you a glimpse into their lives. 💜 But, also the second city of Estonia, Tartu, is worth discovering. 📸

The exhibition is too small and not very interesting (with a few excemptions). It doesn't worth the 6€ entry fee. It was a little strange that with the same amount of money we entered the Latvian museum of art in Riga which is 5 time bigger and with great pieces of art.

Tartu Art Museum was founded in 1940, and resides in its current, tilted house on Raekoja plats since 1988. (Btw: don't believe the plaque saying the house is called after Michael Andreas Barclay de Tolly, one of the Russian generals in the war against Napoleon in 1812: it was bought by his widow. Not every historical-looking plaque is trustworthy.) The museum has an extensive collection of Estonian and Baltic German art, largely (yet not only) by artists connected to Tartu, and arranges exhibitions both on the basis of its collection as well as concerning other themes, historical and contemporary, ranging from private collections and collectors to the painful questions of cultural memory to the problems of designing and discusing the public space. Whenever you have time in Tartu, it is definitely a museum worth visiting.
