Excellent place to visit. We had a really knowledgeable guide explaining all about the spices and the medicinal impact of some. An interesting massage if you wanted it.

A very well organised place with designated employees to take you around and explain things about spices. As expected, they lead you to their shop but there is no undue pressure to make purchases. The items on sale are good from utility as well as gifting point of view. They accept Indian rupees among other currencies. There is parking space and there is a restaurant which serves good buffet meals.

Won't suggest any Asians to do this tour, it's a small area where you see different varieties of herbs grown in a small plot of land. The guy who was taking us around was very knowledgeable and of course wanted a tip towards the end. They keep telling you it's a free tour but in the end they expect you to buy their produce, which is easily available half the price in any Sri Lankan Supermarket. This is another gimmick used by the tour guides to make a commission out of tourists.

I loved our little tour and found that super interesting,however after purchasing an expensive oil product for varicose veins and returning home a few days later to use it I noticed that mould had grown in the bottle since purchasing. Tried sending an email to the address on the bottle label and it bounced back as invalid.

A lovely stopover on your north-south journeys. Nice restaurant on one side, with traditional Sri Lankan curry & rice buffet, plus a general menu. On the other side, a beautiful spice garden with friendly tours, and a great shop selling spice-related potions and gifts.

The tour was really informative and interesting. We also had the chance to try out some tea and receive a massage at the end for a small tip. You can also buy all the products in a store if you want.

Super interesting tour and demonstration. The guides here are very knowledgable. Yes they explain the products they make with the spices but at no point did they push you to buy them. Tour was free but we gave a small tip to the guide for his time.

Cool little spice garden and great to see how all the spices that we can buy at home grow. And some we cannot get at home. There is a small tour including a massage that ends in a small shop. It is a bit diffocult to know how much tipping is required. Cool experience overall, and we bought some nice souvenirs. Some spices are expensive and some are a good deal.

27th November 2023 . Our driver got us here on the way to Kandy. We knew the driver gets a cut for doing so !! Great marketing gimmick! The idea is a guide comes to explain different herbs and uses and benefits which seemed interesting. Next they take you to another enclosure where he asks for a volunteer to get a free facial massage. Before and after pics taken . I took this ride. They give us all some nice green tea. A free foot massage is given and all of us liked this part. They all of the get a tip. We ended up making a big purchase 🤪. Driver has a smug look in his face. This is tourism and great marketing. But when the customer leaves the place and they get it. So in a Srilanka tour, go to a tour of your choice. This is more enjoyable than these type of gimmicks and you feel you are ripped It's always better to go to your destination home stay, check in , take a walk and explore the local town and get the pulse of the local people and promote their business

Mostly a marketing geek to excite you into buying Ayurveda products. Not a must item to visit unless you are really interested in buying spices. We bought beg curry powder from the shop.

This spice farm exceeded the original expectations. First of all, it is very large, not like a garden, but like a farm. Secondly, there are many kinds of plants planted in it, and many of them can't be called by name. The last extra bonus is that there are a lot of spices in the stores here, which is a good choice for tourists who see spices for the first time.

Nice to understand a bit more about the local spices and Ayurveda. We were lucky to have a very kind guide. The shop at the end can be a bit too pricy…

This spice garden is in Naulu area. There's many types of spice, herbs grown here. Many tourists will be brought here so that they can buy different kind of herbs and spices from this shop for cooking. The cinnamons here are sweet in taste. Some of the prices are on the high side but different area produce different types due to soil and nutrients so it's difficult to compare. Plenty of carpark space.

The idea of the little botanical garden is nice. But the whole thing is just designed to be a rip-off. You get a guide which initially gives you some interesting insights about spices and herbs but than they pretty much pressure you into buying creams and oils for way above European prices.

Have a great lunch prepared by the shop owner and tasted great. The curry chicken , potatoes and many other dishes was cooked using their organic spice plants around! The guide was so knowledgeable and tell us about plant that used to cook or medication. Learnt a lot about the the herbs used for medication in Sri Lanka. Only downside was mosquitoes may come after you .. do prepare. Spending 3700 rupees for lunch and some processed spices ..

Google shows the location a bit further north than it actually is. But we found it anyway and had a great free tour by the owner who took us around and showed us all the different plants and spices in the garden. We had a complimentary spice tea - very good - and purchased some items in the gift store. They also offer cooking classes but we were only passing through but I would love to attend if we ever come back!

The most informative cooking class I’ve ever attended! The owner of the place is really hands on when conducting the class and he answered all our questions. On top of that, they also use organic products from their garden to make the dishes. We had an amazing lunch with the dishes we were taught to make! After our cooking class, we did a tour of the spice garden and the staff who did the tour with us was very knowledgeable about all the herbs and plants they grow. We learned a lot!! What’s most important is that at the end of our activities, they never pressured us to buy anything but because they explained the value of their products really well, we got some stuff because we wanted to and not because we felt like we were forced to do so. We had a quick stop at the Euphoria Spice & Herbal for the spice tour on our way to Kandy. It was very interesting. Unfortunately, we do not remember the name of the guide, but he was explaining us in detail and friendly about the spices & plants from Sri Lanka. We learned a lot at our approximately 30 minutes tour and can highly recommend it!

Attended the Spice gardens & cooking class as part of a tour and can honestly say it stands out as a highlight of my time in this beautiful country! These guys really know the in's & out's of the huge variety of spices grown on site and it was such a fun and interactive experience learning from the very best how to cook delicious Sri Lankan food. Shal really got us all involved & made it memorable with a karaoke session at the end!! An absolute must for anyone visiting Sri Lanka.

Beautiful ancient rock cave temple. Folklore has many meanings to the name Aluvihara. One is that the Pali word Aloka was Alu (light) in ancient Sinhala and as it was the abode of Theras, it was a Viharaya. Hence the two words have been coined to make it Aluvihara. Another view is that although there is a huge rock, east of the main rock cave, it has not cut off the light . Therefore it was known as the Aloka lena (cave with light).

It is believed that the King built the dagoba, planted the Bo sapling and founded the temple after the introduction of Buddhism to the country during his reign. Aluvihare Rock Temple was the historic location where the Pāli Canon was first written down completely in text on ola (palm) leaves.Many monastery caves, some of which exhibit frescoes are situated near this temple. In the 1st Century BC, during the reign of King Walagamba, Sri Lanka underwent a famine known as 'Baminithiyasaya' for 12 years. There was also a South Indian invasion at the same time and the Buddhist monks of that era realized that these problems would be a danger to the existence of Buddha Sasana in the country. Under these conditions, memorizing and repeating the Dhamma (doctrine) was difficult. Due to the famine Buddhist monks did not receive sufficient alms and faced many difficulties, and they had to eat yams, roots and leaves of trees for their survival. A group of about 60 of them went to Malaya Rata, which is said to be the hilly area of the country. They managed to live on the banks of Mahaweli river under harsh conditions and survived for 12 years till the famine came to an end. King Walagamba who was overthrown by a rebellion during the invasion from South India, regained the throne by defeating the invaders after fourteen years. The monks who left to India and to the hilly areas of Sri Lanka, during the difficult period, returned to Anuradhapura, and decided to transcribe the Tripiṭaka (philosophical doctrines of Buddhism) for the preservation and for the use of future generations. The monks selected Aluvihare Rock temple in Matale as the most suitable and secured place to carry out this important event. This transcription was carried out due to the fear that the doctrine would be lost during the upheaval caused by repeated South Indian invasions.[citation needed] It is said that 500 scholarly monks congregated at Aluvihare Rock temple to perform the difficult task of first reciting the doctrines and agreeing on an acceptable version before transcription.[4] The entire transcription was done in books made of ola leaves, locally known as puskola poth. These books were made up from thick strips created from the leaves of either the palmyra or talipot palm and the doctrines were written down in Pali language. A metal stylus was used to inscribe the characters on the ola leaves. The old library at of Aluvihare Rock Temple, which had safely housed the volumes of this transcribed manuscripts for so many centuries, was totally destroyed during the Matale Rebellion in 1848.[5] Many parts of the temple complex was destroyed too by this incident. The consequences of this disaster are still evident today at the temple premises. It took a long a time for the recompilation, as few generations of monks had to transcribe the Tripiṭaka again. The recompilation and transcription took a long time as only few monks were engaged in this painstaking task, and the first of the three “baskets of the law” was only completed in 1982. Free parking is available more vehicles can be parked inside, But if there was a vehicle controller ( didn't see) able to increase parking spaces with proper parking Washrooms available , but not much clean In front of the Temple, Thera was a " Hela bojun Hala" and you can manage meals/ refreshments at a reasonable cost. You can keep your shoes/ slipper in your vehicle or at the entrance of the main staircase. At the top of the steps there is a place to ( racks) to keep your shoes. small Musium at the temple,where lots of ancient and historical items can be seen.But arrangement is not good and details of material not displayed. one person was there to explain. If you come with children to learn about " Thripitakaya" kindly show them to the museum and explain the story.

Colourful but expensive! I never had to pay entry in a Hindutemple, 500 is a lot! I feel cheated. I was sad after payment that I was not allowed to enter the main shrine. What sense makes a Temple, if you can not have darshan from the deity? I recommend to the temple to give at least some guiding for the entry fee.

The Kovil has open hours where you are allowed to walk in. Therefore, recommend going on those sepacified times as you are not allowed to walk in to the premises when closed. No vehicle parking and very difficult to find a parking slot. Know as one of the most secred Kovils in the area. You have to remove the slippers at the entrance before entering to the kovil.

Today it is visited by Hindus as well as Buddhists and Muslims etc. and many tourists. It has a very tall and colourful "Gopuram". The Temple festival is very famous and many devotees come from around the island to attend it. There are very beautifully decorated chariots owned by the temple which tour the town during the festival. Parking available inside the premises. You can pay at the entrance and buy a ticket to have a Pooja done in your name. There are shrines for almost all the Hindu gods inside the premises.

Beautiful hindu temple. Men , shorts are not allowed, wear full jeans. Ladies , Make sure your legs are covered or your dress is below the knees or else they will provide you skirt free of charge . Entry fees are applicable for tourists

A beautiful Hindu kovil/temple located closer to the Matale city centre. Unique Hindu art and crafts. This is one of the largest Hindu temples in Sri Lanka. This place has a large wedding hall for Hindus. Resembles cultural diversity in Sri Lanka. Please wear full clothes. Shorts and skinnies are not allowed.

they are extremely kind, the garden is so nice and you feel like in heaven, they explain a lot of interesting info about plants and spyces.....but.....dont go to the shop unless you want to pay 5 times the price of an item they could make more business if they were more intelligent not treating the foreign tourist like if we were nerds or millionaires. I will never recomend to my friends a visit. SCAM

We had a really good time and it was very informative and educational. However, our driver was hell bent on taking us there as we could get a free massage which lasts about 5-10 minutes. There's no such thing as a free massage as your expected to tip them after. Then your taken to the shop. I should have learnt by now to say No Thank you and walk away. Except I still ended up buying a coconut hair oil for nearly £40. And my partner bought a cough syrup and an eczema cream which all together cost us nearly £90. I appreciate all the hard work it must have gone into to make these products, but pretty much everyone here is out to rip tourists off. Be warned people. Keep your money in your wallets and just say No Thank you and walk away.
