I love Castles and this is so far the best I've ever been too. It's completely surrounded by a wall and has lots of restaurants and shops within the castle walls, has a draw bridge entrance and the whole place is so well preserved and they are continuing to work on it. It's free to enter and walk around. I visited twice in 3 days, once at night which was amazing seeing it all lit up and then again the next day and it looked even better.

Amazingly well preserved city, the walls and the chateau comtal are absolutely breathtaking. The town inside is very well suited for tourists, but the narrow streets and vibrant colors make it stunning. I would recommend going on a sunny weekday, weekends are sometimes crowded and hot. For lunch there are many places to eat, restaurants, food stands, but if you prefer finer dining, it would be better to go back into the lower village for lunch. Allover a marvelous tourist destination nonetheless.

We did not enter the historical citadel, we just wandered around the exterior area and visited a restaurant for lunch. It's all been very well restored and we had a great time. Amazing views from the entry / bus stop area as well as how spectacular the castle is. Worth noting it was very busy so if you don't like crowds you're better off visiting this place in the off season.

This medieval city is so unique with its castle within a castle structures. It still breaths the medieval times, although almost all buildings have been modified to fit shops or restaurants. They might have gone a bit more withholding on that part, that's why it's a 4 for me, as I like the fact it's being used, but not everywhere they took in account the history and authenticity. Worth a visit you ask? Definitely!!

World Heritage, Medieval City. Photo opportunities at every turn. Some streets of tat shops, but didn't detract from an amazing day. Book a trip with tourist information for a real snapshot of the place, won't disappoint. Also some excellent restaurants which were a Brucie Bonus.

In some ways, it’s like the Disneyland of Mid Evil towns. BUT it’s awesome! Nothing else like it! Tons of history, it’s a living town with citizens, great shops and plenty of affordable eating options. It’s beautiful, it’s mind boggling, it’s an experience not to be missed.

Carcassonne was granted two UNESCO World Heritage sites. One is the whole castle complex itself, the other is the castle you pay for a visit. After visiting the castle, I was looking for the other. The restaurant owner told me about the fact that it’s actually one castle inside a big one, which made sense to me then. The castle complex is massive, bigger than Le Mont Saint-Michel. However, I think Le Mont Saint-Michel is more impressive for the architecture and the overall atmosphere. It doesn’t mean that Carcassonne is not worth a visit, but if I can only recommend one to a foreign tourist, Le Mont Saint-Michel is definitely a go-to. You can also find a lot of vine yards around the castle as well as Pyrénées at the background. The countryside view adds more agreeable touches to the castle. Some trails around the castle are definitely good for a walk to get away from other tourists. If you happen to be here in July, don’t miss out on the fireworks on Bastille Day. The fireworks and illumination at the castle is world class.

The site itself is impressive and we enjoyed the views as we walked from the old town area across the bridge to it. Inside the walls it was very touristy for us (a "mature" couple) but could see it more enjoyable for families with all the shops geared for them. There are a large number of restaurants so one should be able to find one that suits your needs.

Absolutely stunning walled castle. Definitely get the audio tour. About a 30 min walk from the train station. The town inside the wall is very touristy..best to head back to the lower town for meals, etc. Just remember that many restaurants close at 2pm. We didn't have advanced tickets, but arrived when it opened at 10am and got in without any problems.

I really loved this place. It's somewhere I've wanted to visit ever since I saw a photo of it several years ago. You can easily spend a day wandering the streets and taking in the beautiful surroundings - lots of quirky shops to visit. Still pretty busy when I visited (September 2023) but everybody was friendly and courteous. Can be a little expensive but nothing too crazy. If you speak some French, even badly, people will really appreciate you trying! A tour of the castle and ramparts is also highly recommended and not too expensive (around €9). Formidable!

Amazing city, amazing castle. Carcassone is really a beautiful and unique place to visit. Walking through the medieval city gates, we were impressed with the quaint narrow streets, the many restaurants and shops, and all the lovely views by the ramparts. You could wander around all day taking it all in. Well worth a visit! We had a 7 and 2 year old with us, you can have a stroller. It’s not easy but totally doable.

Cité de Carcassonne is simply spectacular, with jaw-dropping views from every angle. Entry to the cite is free, allowing you to freely explore its narrow streets and soak in the lively atmosphere. With numerous restaurants, shops, and bars to discover, plus iconic landmarks like the cathedral and chateau, there's plenty to see and do. While access to the ramparts may require a small fee, the opportunity to capture stunning photographs all day long is well worth it.

An amazing, beautiful castle which you can visit for free. Lots of shops and restaurants, interesting walls and towers that make it look like a fairytale. Lovely views of the surrounding countryside.

Great wall and views around. It's worth visiting and walking around its medieval streets. There's a parking quite close by. There are a great selection of restaurants and cafes all around. It may get hectic in summer or peak season.

Such a lovely place to visit, steeped in history, breathtakingly beautiful and wonderful restaurants, places to drink, get a coffee - and of course, don't forget to look around the town too - really nice! Parking is great up by the castle, however I imagine in the summertime you would be lucky to find a space. If you don't mind an extra 10-15min walk, there is plenty of parking at the bottom of the hill in the very safe, clean and incredibly reasonable underground carparks.

It's a very historical and interesting cite... Everything is well structured and maintained! Free to enter and very popular with tourists because there is so much to see and do when you visit this medieval site. Would be a whole day trip to explore, eat local casserole meals, visit the historic church, find some nice artisans shops, soak in the city view (* need to buy tickets to go into the tower area of the castle 🏰 ) It's definitely worth visiting...

Lovely walked city with plenty of places to eat and various tourist gift shops. €9 (children free) to enter the castle and Ramparts but worth it for the views alone. Can get busy so booking advised. Lots of steps. Jousting shows 3 times a day during the summer months.

Amazing medieval city and castle. Had a quick visit but would need more time to really appreciate it. You can walk around inside the city for free but you have to pay to go inside the castle. Wonderful history to take in everywhere you look. There is a car park which we were lucky to find a space in during August, as the sign said it was full.

How cool is it to be able to visit an entire, intact medieval city! The largest in Europe! A UNESCO site, if you love medieval bldgs, you will love this! Although the center is crowded with the typical tourist gift shops, walking around, I could feel what it could have been like so long ago! Most of the site is free. There is an intact Romanesque church. There is an about 9€ cost to visit part of the castle but we arrived to late in the day to do this (mind the times!). The cemetery has beautiful headstones on the crypts but it is not as old as it appears.

This castle offers an incredible viewpoint that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime. The castles are enormous and breathtakingly gorgeous! If you intend to come, I suggest packing comfortable running shoes because the castle tour is very long.

It was absolutely beautiful and amazing I would recommend to absolutely anyone. Tons of places for food and it feels like you are walking through the medieval times. I would go again and spend a few days there to get the whole experience. There are tons of museums too.

We were here at Easter and the city was very quiet. Shops were closing early. There is not much dinner option as most restaurants only serve lunch. Check reviews before you eat anywhere, as most places have bad reviews. Believe the reviews, we got very sick from one of the restaurants. There is a public toilet just opposite the main entrance of the castle. The little train that takes you around with tour guide was fun if you want to learn more about the city.

Great place to visit we normally come in the summer when it's very busy. It's a lot quieter this time of year but not as many shops and restaurants open. Nice to see this fab place at different times of year. Visited the castle and ramparts today. Weather not great but the inside parts were nice and warm.

A beautiful castle with a rich outskirts, full of shops, restaurants and curiosities. The perfectly executed reconstruction of the castle resulted in a place that is absolutely a must-see. Lots of things to see and explore, especially the walls and battlements from which the view is breathtaking and gives you chills. An absolute must-see.

Wow what a neat and interesting place! It was an easy walk from the train station to the medieval city. There is a bit of an uphill walk at the very end. Lots of tourist at the entrance of the city but they soon dispersed. We had pre purchased our tickets to the castle and that made the wait much shorter. People who needed to buy tickets had to wait in a long line. Accidentally we walked towards the exit once we entered. It was a long walk along the fortress wall in one direction. Then before we knew it we had exited! So we made our way back to the entrance and were let back in to see the first part! Washrooms are not the greatest in Carcassonne. There a free public W/C in the historic city. Some have toilets, some have a hole in the ground. Some have toilet paper, some don’t. I think they all stink. Totally worth getting lunch and using the restaurants toilet! Once our day was over, we walked back to the train station and caught an earlier train back to Toulouse. Standing room only. Carcassonne was a wonderful day with lots of old history. Must visit if in the area.

What a stunning place! The massive fortification bring you back to medieval times. There are a lot of nice, narrow streets to steal around and there are great views at every corner. Very pleasant was the fact, that in November the number of tourists are way down and it was very pleasant and almost empty everywhere. Definitely worth a visit.

Gorgeous gorgeous castle. In the four days I was in the city I went to the castle about 5 times. Very pretty from any angle and any side street. And the inside of the castle is stunning. Definitely recommend to visit at any time of the day. I didn’t get a chance to experience it but I was told by a local friend that it presents spectacular sunset views (from the west side of the castle obviously). Great history and amazing architectural structure.

I have mobility issues and knew going in that the stairs would be an adventure for me. However, I also knew that I did not want to miss the opportunity to explore the castle from the ramparts. It provided phenomenal views and was a great experience. There was more to it than I expected, too. I had to spend the next day recovering, but I'm very glad I got to experience it.

Probably a five star out of season, but in the crowds La Cite felt like medieval Disneyland on Easter Saturday. The Ramparts were the best part, but even here it was one long queue around the block. Amazing views, though, and I don't think there's anything else like it in the world. I got some pictures that captured the feel of a medieval castle of the edge of the Pyrenees, even if I felt like a tourist being shoved and jostled while I took them.

My third visit to this castle and it still thrills me, it’s a wonderful place to visit and incredibly well looked after. Allow 2 hours to visit the museum and walk the ramparts. Most of the quality shops are now gone (but try Little Julie for leather goods) so keep your money for places that are not tourist traps.

If you are visiting Carcassonne then the old city is a must do on your list. Go into the paid area which is the chateau. You can just get a ticket on the day in the off season but you need to get a ticket online in the summer and select a time. When you are online select the chateau as that has access to the ramparts. The ramparts option has no days to select. It takes about 1.5 hours to walk around and has a lot of steps but it’s worth it to do as you can get great photos. Walking around the outside is alright and we did that on another day and had lunch in one of the many places to eat but if you only have a short time then do the paid chateau visit.

Absolutely worth every penny. The way they have planned the walk of the castle you get to see every part. Be warned the walk is a full lap plus half of the internal walls... Approx 3.5km according to Google.

It's a very impressive fortress with one of the best walls/medieval defence that I have seen so far. Also the view to the surroundings is excellent. Buuut most of the buildings inside are now tourist shops, restaurants and so on and the whole place is crowded buy tourist even during off-season. I really don't want to see this madness in summer.

Pretty vast, with stunning views and many different towers. Must visit when in town, might be a bit crowded at times so I'd suggest getting tickets online in advance. The process for that is pretty easy. Also, if you take your time and stroll through, you might end up needing 90 minutes instead of the advertised 60. At least that was the case for us.

9.50 EUR entry and it was not busy. Highly recommended to visit this historic castle as you walk inside it but note here there are a lot of steps so not easily accessible. You can spend a good hour or two here exploring this castle with great views over Carcassone.

Amazing place to visit. The bridge itself is astonishing. There is a big car park nearby, you pay 9€ for the whole day and you get to access the area for free. Don't miss the view points that allow you to see the bridge from above. We visited in July and the temperature was torrid, but it was absolutely worth it.

Fantastic place to visit. This is great spot for a picnic, wild swimming and canoeing. All with this stunning Roman bridge as a backdrop. In summer there is a free drone and light show that is definitely worth watching.

Go to left bank where you have big parking and all facilities. Right bank is accessible by walk. Definitely a place to see, considering the scale and how well it is preserved. 2000 years… man… and you regret that your apartment was not built by Rome Empire.

Roman aqueduct, museum and Mediterranean gardens. This historic site is on the UNESCO world heritage list and is a location where you could spend all day or just an hour to see the basics of the site. It is an affordable adventure for the entire family.

Another lovely Roman project still in good shape! We arrived quite late but still have fantastic time here. We have to deep in the tempting water as well . Warm and clean with rocky beaches and rocky bed (water shoes helped children). Sadly we leaving soon and can't come back for more this year! I don't think the all day parking charge is expensive at all €9! You can't please everyone! Coffee /ice-cream and snacks on site also clean toilets! Highly recommended!

Just amazing. Unbelievable architecture for it's time. Really impressive seeing it up close. €9 for parking but then free to visit the site. Worth seeing from above viewpoints, down on the riverbed, and take the walk across to the other side. Take your swimmers for a cool off dip after!

Unfortunately we visited on a rainy day, but the bridge still looks beautiful. If you’re there on a sunny day, take your time and walk the route provided around the bridge. For best pictures, walk a bit farther to get an overview of the bridge. You can find more information about the bridge at the museum which only costs €6.50. It can be a bit crowded (we were there on a weekday and there were plenty of people) and you will need to pay €9 for parking.

Very beautiful even after all these years. You can either enjoy the view or go swimming. We paid 9€ for parking, there's a "touist area" with shops and so on, I guess that's necessary, but it didn't really deduct anything from the overall experience.

Wow, amazing, one of the coolest things we saw in Europe. We did not do the guided tour which you need to do if you want to walk the top. We would do that next time, but just hiking near Pont du Gard is awesome.

You think an aqueduct is nothing special? Think again! This is the tallest Roman bridge-aqueduct in the world, standing at 48m high, which dates back over 2000 years. The whole area is well-maintained and almost like a huge park. It is perfect for a Picknick, a meal on the terrace of the restaurant with a view of the aqueduct a mountain bike tour, a hike or just to chill near the river and have a swim in summer.

It's the most visited site in France and it's a UNESCO World Heritage site, that says something about it. The parking is charged at 9€ per vehicle and there are no other charges for visiting the site but the museum visit is at additional cost. The place is quite beautiful and has small hiking paths all around it, you can get some pretty good views of the aqueduct if you venture a little into the woods.

This is one of the coolest things to see. How Roman made things still are around still stuns me and many, not something often seen in the United States. Easy to walk and if you go further down, can get great photos as well as dip you toes in the water on a hot day.

A huge monument that blends into the landscape ... pure poetry. Since Roman times this aqueduct has remained standing and demonstrates its solidity and quality, but the most beautiful thing is how man managed to enhance it and merge it with his interests. The Rhône River is used as a seaside resort where everyone gathers to have fun and enjoy a day of relaxation. I really liked it and it is definitely worth its fame, so why not pay us a visit? 🤩

What an experience! The bridge is such a jaw-dropping piece of architecture, and there is so much to see and do here. You can go swimming and hiking, you can chill and eat with a view, you can buy souvenirs, and you can visit the museum and exhibitions. Entrance is free of charge (the museum and exhibition cost extra), and parking is 9€ for 24 hours (you could even stay overnight with a caravan or mobile home, if you don’t need any amenities or electricity). In my opinion a perfect and affordable place for a day out. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

The Pont du Gard is truly a marvel to behold, with its gigantic aqueduct showcasing incredible Roman architecture. Seeing it in person is even more awe-inspiring. The sheer scale of the structure is amazing! In addition to its architectural significance, there's also a swimming area nearby, adding to the appeal. However, it's important to note that the area can get scorching hot, so be prepared for the heat when visiting. Overall, experiencing the Pont du Gard is an unforgettable journey back in time and a testament to the ingenuity of ancient engineering.

This aqueduct is gigantic even more so in person. What a great Roman architecture, just amazing! There’s also a swimming area here. It gets scorching hot here so make sure you come down here May or June.

This bridge is legendary, the place is very special. At any time of the day you can feel a fascination and all tourists behave with equal respect and consideration. This is particularly noticeable in the garbage that ends up in the trash can here and not in nature. Most people approach from the left side because that's where the parking lot is. The bridge takes you to the right side of the river and there is also a nice swimming opportunity there. What makes the place so fascinating? On the one hand, the history, an enormous construction achievement. On the other hand, the play of colors at all times of the day. All the people start building a small dam out of the stones. Whether 5 years old or over 70 years old. 15 years ago you could still cross the bridge at the very top of the watercourse. This is now blocked. Nevertheless, the climb is worth it because the view of the bridge is unique. Likewise the tunnel above, which also had to be built for the aqueduct.

A must! Pictures don’t do justice to the beauty of the bridge and its surroundings. Make sure to have some time to sit at the cafe once you cross the bridge to enjoy the view. Went in November with not many tourists and the calm was much appreciated

The Pont du Gard is an impressive testament to ancient engineering, standing majestically over the river below. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, it's a marvel that connects us directly to the ingenuity of the Romans. The scenery around the bridge is picturesque, offering panoramic views that are a treat for the eyes and a haven for photographers. The lush greenery and the gently flowing river create a tranquil ambiance that's perfect for a leisurely stroll or a picnic. I visited on a weekend, and as expected, it was quite bustling with visitors. If you prefer a quieter experience, I'd recommend going before noon when the crowds are thinner.

What a cool place to visit. I only wish we had more time. My husband and I would have liked to have hiked the entire place. We did go up to the bridge and did the steps to the top. I would have liked to have gone on the other side!

An outstanding Roman arena undergoing a lot of restoration work. Entry was 10 euros though there are family tickets as well. There is an option to have audio commentary once you are inside. Toilets are on site. There is a bar but only open for events. The exit is through the gift shop which doesn't appear to be too expensive.

This is a TOP visit if you are around Nîmes, an incredible view from the past, a living museum! Don’t miss it ! For my big surprise, pet friendly for small dogs.

There was a queue to buy tickets but it moved fast. We spent almost hours walking around while listening to the interesting narration of the audi guide; about the history of the amphitheatre and it's purpose. The visit was totally worth it.

Stunning on the outside, but the inside is not worth a visit if you’ve been to Verona or Rome. It’s mainly scaffolding with tribunes for shows. So nothing majorly nice to look at and not photogenic either. You can save yourself the 10 Euro entry fee per adult. If you go though, make sure to get the combo ticket that also only costs 10 Euros and allows also entry to the Tour Magne.

The Amphitheatre of Nîmes is a sight to behold. Standing at an impressive 21 metres tall, the intact colleseum immerses you into ancient Nîmes. The restoration projects that have been ongoing for some 10 years have made a lot of significant and beautiful refurbishments that only enhance the Amphitheatre. While I appreciate the remaining half in the authentic, as it was, way. The "City of the Gods" show was spectacular and a pleasure for all, too. Make sure you book tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.

No other words than amazing. It's said to be the best preserved Roman amphitheater and after visiting a few I have to agree. If you are in the area I highly recommend visiting. On my visit the amphitheater was set for a concert and I'm still happy to have seen its beautiful. I visited on a saturday and it was not busy

Big and beautiful ancient arena, now turn into a concert hall. Looking outside is much more interesting and grand. But inside pretty much full of tool, concert equipments. The audio is interesting to explain about the place and you can visit only half of the arena, due to under construction.

Amazing Roman architecture, they were setting up a concert hall when I went to visit. They provide you a mobile tour guide in different languages and there is a nice souvenir shop on the way out.

Beautiful and amazon Arena, dated s. I D.C. so almost 2000 years and still splendurous and astonishing. Now under big renovation but still can visit this historical monument. Specially recommended to take photos during sunset time but also night time.

Nimes amphitheatre is another beautiful example of Roman architecture. It was built around 100 AD and is well-preserved today. It was once used for gladiator fights and still hosts various events such as bullfights, concerts and other events. While smaller than the Colosseum in Rome, I was still amazed by the size and design of the arena. I highly recommend going all the way to the top level to enjoy great views of Nimes and the amphitheatre itself.

Very cool Roman amphitheater with a comprehensive audio guide (several languages available) that is more interesting and entertaining than most. Just be sure to bring a photo ID. Very friendly employees here as well who speak English. We didn’t buy tickets in advance but it wasn’t too busy and there was virtually no wait. Lots of concerts/festivals during the summer so unfortunately the middle of the arena was set up with a stage and sound booth etc. - a unique location if you’re attending a concert here but still worth a visit if you’re not.

The Arena is in really good shape. However, a day before we visited it there was a concert inside, so we had a ”pleasure” to see all the construction related to it - that made a negative impact on our experience. Besides, there was a strong smell of urine on the ground floor. Despite the above, a place with great history, well preserved, definitely worth seeing.

One of the most preserved roman amphitheatres / arenas I have ever seen. The tickets are also affordable and you get an audio guide with it by default. There is also a good souvenir shop at the exit of the arena. Definitely recommended place to visit.

The amphitheater is a beautiful and historic Roman arena that will inspire any intrepid traveller with an interest in Roman history. There is an audioguide available for anyone interested in learning more about the history of the arena and is a worthwhile addition when looking around the amphitheater. At the exit of the arena there is a shop where people can buy souvenirs. There is a combination ticket available to buy that also includes access to the Maison Carrée and the Tour Magne, I’d recommend buying it if you’re interested in site seeing Nîmes. I’d definitely recommend visiting the Amphitheater of Nîmes.

It’s definitely worth buying the combo ticket to visit the Maison Carrée” and the museum, though we didn’t have time to visit the latter. The arena is very well preserved and a pleasure to visit. It’s still hosting many types of events. A must see in the region, definitely recommended.

Nice Roman amphitheater in Nimes. Arrived too late so I could not visit the archaeological museum right opposite. Would be good to visit both the museum and the amphitheater.

Awesome! If you're into history, archeology, and exploring. Very fun. Bring comfy shoes with good grip! There are lifts if you don't want to take loads stairs up, but you still need to take them down and there's lots of walking.

One of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. The photos speak for themselves. Only downside was that a lot of the staff at the ticket scan weren’t that helpful and understanding. They kept speaking French to us while their name tags had an English flag on them. When we asked them if they could repeat it in English we got a big sigh an rolling eyes.

Book ahead! Very popular but well worth a visit - excellently organised, amazing caves and if you're up for a good walk, lovely to walk through the caverns

Practical details first. It’s 14 degrees down at the bottom so wear something warm. You can take stairs or you can take an elevator so it’s partially accessible. We had a baby with us and used a baby carrier. Went down using the stairs and up in the elevator. Easy and accessible parking and a decent place to eat. Don’t arrive too early for your door and do book online before you go as it can get busy especially in the summer months. Now the attraction itself was amazing. It is unbelievable how something like that is a natural occurrence. Two hours drive from Toulouse it’s definitely a must see. You even take a boat for 500m on an underground river. Audio guides in many languages. Really fantastic day out.

Wow, did not expect to see this. Be aware that the temperature below is 13C/55F. Also you have to take a lot of steps to see the most of it. But for most people aged 6-70 that won't be a problem. Some places are slippery. I would recommend to do the boat ride.

Probably the best cave we have ever visited. Self guided tour with a good audio guide with a kids version for under 12s. Overall tour takes 1.5hrs with the boat ride in the cave river being fantastic. 13C in the cave so lovely on a hot day but take a jumper with you as it can feel chilly down there. Pictures do not do the place justice. Highly recommend

Amazing, i highly recommend it. Don’t forget to take a jacket or a sweatshirt with you, and waterproof shoes, you don’t wanna get out of the hole all wet 😁

Expensive entrance fee but I advice you it is worth it. Very interesting cave and well maintained, staff are helpful and friendly. Lots of stairs so make sure you are wearing your walking shoes, they have elevator and long stairs but also required to go up and down to some part and boating inside as well, not really a place for babied and small kids for it is quite dangerous for them and also for those who have trouble walking.

I had never heard of Gouffre de Padirac, but I was amazed by it's beauty. The Grand Dome is awesome and well worth the climb up and down the steps. The staff was also very helpful and friendly. Would definitely recommend it!

Amazing experience! We booked on line and were taken in on yime. Helpful staff. All amenities including an elevator for those who are unable to use stairs. Fascinating rock formations both walking and in the boat. Informative guides and information boards. A must visit!
