A clean beach ..a good place to relax

I went there in september. It was rough. Better go in december. Anyway the beach was clean.

Kalutara beach is a long stretch of a golden shore spreading from Waskaduwa to Payagala. Divided by the Kalu river estuary, it has a charm of Its own and certain dark hue in the sand around the estuary. Being in proximity to Colombo makes it a viable candidate for a day trip to enjoy along with the cultural and religious attractions in the area. Calido beach, the local’s favourite is located north of the estuary and can be reached from the town. You’ll find that it’s perfect for a family outing, watch the sunset or take a walk along the beach sprinkled with cuttlefish and shells. People usually can be seen flying kites, volleyball and even football here. Word of caution: If you’re looking for a dip in the ocean, be careful to avoid monsoon season (May – Sep) where the sea can be rough with strong winds and waves. Be sure to always consult your hotel about swimming and watch for red flags. Many beaches in front of hotels and beach resorts are usually well maintained and clean. Beach tour guides and sellers are rampant as any beach on the island. Make sure to avoid them at all cost. You can find many beachside restaurants where you can drop in to savor delectable seafood and sip a cold one while feeling the sea breeze and sand touching your feet.

It was great, don't be affected by some of the mixed reviews. The place is spectacular, given its history and location. It shares a huge part of Ceylonese history, from the colonial era and how the gentry had lived during those times. Although the palace was not as well maintained, it did have its unique and undeniable charm. A really beautiful and engaging place, where you can lose yourself admiring its innate and romantic story.

A mansion situated in Kalutara, which was built in the British colonial era, is currently maintained by the Public Trustee Department. Immediate surrounding well maintained. But buildings need renovations. Said to be built with imported fittings, including tiles and wood. We were not allowed to take photos of the interior of the mansion.

Richmond Castle is an Edwardian mansion, located near Kalutara. Built between 1900 and 1910, it was formally the country seat of Mudaliyar Don Arthur de Silva Wijesinghe Siriwardena. The building is currently owned by the Public Trustee and open to the public from 9 am to 4 pm. The house sits on a hill 2 km (1.2 mi) from the Kalutara, adjoining the Kalu Ganga River at Palatota, on a 42 acres (17 ha) estate beside the Kalutara-Palatota Road. This is one of the beautiful places to visit in Kalutara. The lady who guided us did a very good job by explaining each and everything about the castle and the builder.

Its an Ancient Caslte located in Kalutara. Just 2.5km from Kalutara Town. There is lot of history behind this place. Ticket Price is only Rs.100/= Per Local adult. For foreigners it costs Rs.1000/= For these prices you will get a guide for a full tour inside the caslte. They expalin everything about the place. You can take some amazing pictures & one end of the land has a view of Kalu Ganaga.

Richmond Castle, a well-preserved historical mansion in Sri Lanka, offers a valuable experience with knowledgeable guides. Ideal for those keen on Sri Lankan history and culture.

It is located near by the Kaluthara town. It is a unique castle and worth to visit. There are guides appointed and they will guide you inside the castle. Photography and videography prohibited inside but you can take photos outside area. Normally the tour will take about one hour to visit inside the castle. Normally there is no rush at the location.

Good place to visit.It's a large castle built by a rich Mudliar lived in the colonial period of English. The person who guided us did a very good job by explaning everything. Thank You

Nice place which explains the society, business and politics of old Ceylon. Good example of how stupid our men were though they're Cambridge scholars at young age; but don't know how to make good decisions for own life. Guide gives helpful explanation, though credibility unknown. Don't forget to see around the garden as well apart from inside. Photos prohibited inside.

There are rumours spreading around the town that bungalow is haunted in nighttime. Avoid visiting late night 👻 The entire building is characterised by intricate carvings. A dancing hall with a stage is another of its features. The architecture shows greater similarity to an English mansion than to an ancient walauwwa. Richmond Castle is a two-storeyed building with 99 doors and 34 windows. The whole mansion needs to be renovated. Many rooms and walls are broken or damaged. You need to buy a ticket at the entrance which is 100rs person. There will be guides inside to let you know the history. It is okay to visit if you are passing by kalutara.

The Richmond Castle is the former home of a previous Ceylonese governor (Padikar Mudali) during the British colonial era of Sri Lanka. This is located in Kalutara, in an iconic location where you can see the Kalu river, the Kalutara Bo tree and the ocean. The whole land area of the place spans almost 50 acres, and the house, or the "castle" spans over around 1 acre, according to the guide at the location. Taking photos of the castle is possible with the approval of the guide. While the castle does not display any Sri Lankan architectural features, it is worth viewing, as it gives an insight into the uper class of the Sri Lankan of the British colonial era. The old photographs of the late governor and his wife can be seen in several places, which shows the castle in its true grandeur. While it's not the most scenic of locations, it's worth a visit if you're a fan of exploring different architectures.

Important place for the person who likes to discover historical facts of Sri Lanka. The castle is a huge one and those days ,the owner used imported quality materials to build it and decorate it. But no renovations have been done recently and it is going to be damaged. Staff is available for describing the history of the castle. Actually they did an excellent job. Here a few pictures were taken with the approval of the guiding lady regarding inner wall design and the owner of the castle who donated an ambulance to the UK in history. Currently they maintain a children's home for little boys as per the wish of the owner of the castle. The garden is comparatively maintained nicely and you can take pictures. It is prohibited to take pictures inside without an approval. A small car park is available and limited vehicles can be parked. I think ground clearance low vehicles (like aqua) are attentive while entering the park. The road is narrow close to the castle car park and be careful while giving space for the opposite direction vehicle. You can take tickets while you enter the location at the main gate.( not expensive)

100 lkr for locals, 1000 for foreigners. Rich with a culture heritage, but abandoned nowadays. Such a pity, could be a great location for weddings, events and photoshoots

A beautiful waterfall that breaks into several parts. During the rainy season, it is dangerous to take a bath at the top. I have been here many times. But now people have polluted a lot. Empty alcohol bottles, bite packets, polythene in many places. Please protect such watershed ecosystems. Bring back everything you carry.

If you have a day off and you're around Kalutara do visit this place with your friends. Best place for a short hike. Beautiful waterfalls, rocks and ponds. Can have a great bath at the top. Too many photogenic spots available. And please Don't leave any food or plastic wastes if you visit the place.

This Falls is located in the Thudugala Estate in Thudugala village at Kalutara District, Sri Lanka. Once owned by a British national, a derelict bungalow still remains near the waterfall. There is a natural swimming pool which even kids can use. Avoid weekends or holidays as many people visiting

The Thudugala Ella Falls is located in the Thudugala Estate in Thudugala village at Kalutara District, Sri Lanka. Once owned by a British national, a derelict bungalow still remains. There is a natural swimming pool surrounded by Ketala plants and a giant pus creeper (fern) that has spread to cover an area of a hectare. Also within the Thudugala Forest Reserve, there are many species of birds. These include the migrant bird ‘Yellow Magta’, with its colourful plumage and yellow underbelly, and ‘Dicaeum Erythornynchos’, the smallest bird in Sri Lanka. The waterfall drops in two steps The top part is about 8 meters and the lower part 6 meters. This waterfall is a popular bathing place for locals. A interesting feature here is that a tunnel runs under the waterfall and comes out on top at a side to it. Unfortunately this area is now being used for a oil palm plantation which has impacted the flow of water on the steam. The route to the waterfall starts from Katukurunda Junction off the Galle Road; 5 miles (8.0 km) from there on Matugama Road to Thudugala junction and from there 8 miles (12.9 km) to the waterfall. It is said that there are number of waterfalls along this stream specially a beautiful fall called Sita Ella. Location unknown. When traveling from Thudugala junction, you will come to another junction called “Ellagāwa (Near the waterfall) Junction” with a signboard of a rubber plantation so you can easily recognize it. From there, if you want to go to the waterfall and its natural bathing places, you will have to take the left road which runs over a small bridge nearby. The right road will lead you only to an artificially created bathing place which is said to be muddy but used to lure visitors to small hotel nearby. The left road will take you to the dilapidated house of the British owner and from there you need to walk along the river in the estate to reach the Thudugala Ella waterfall and its beautiful bathing pools.

I went here alone to bath at a evening on a weekday. Only one family was there. It was a dry season and no water around the town. But this waterfall is unsinkable even in a super dry season. There were so many activities to do. There is a sliding rock at the down. You can climb to the top of that rock and slide to bottom (Not the waterfall rock) Do not forget to wear slippers to protect your feet from rocks when sliding. And also you can hike to the top of the water fall. Top of the waterfall has a mistery environment. The main pool is always crowded and you have to wait sometime to get a space for youself.

In the beginning, the cave is about 175ft tall and 200ft long and the deeper you go, the bigger it gets. Most of the natural tunnels are blocked now and are being used by archaeological researchers. Human skulls that were found in this part of the caves date back to almost 37,000 years ago. Among the finds, weapons made from animal bones and stones were also unearthed. Researcher says that these weapons were used to kill deer, monkeys, porcupines and other animals. The objects also suggest that the humans back then ate a few types of edible snails and wild breadfruit. This cave was converted into a Buddhist temple by a monk and priest named Porogoma who used an iron crowbar to clean the soil and dirt from the cave entrance and levelled the ground for use. A 40ft long reclining Buddha statue can also be found in the temple now.

Temple: Our guide Chamindha went very out of his way to show us around the cave and associated temple. In the temple area there is a huge sleeping Lord Buddha statue, Buddhist artifacts, and a shrine including Lord Buddha, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Saman.

Pahiyangala, the largest cave in Asia, is situated at Bulathsinhala in the Kalutara District. It is a two hour drive from Colombo through the Piliyandala-Horana Road and covers a distance of about 40 Km. The road is motorable up to the foot of the rock. Pahiyangala gets its name from the famous Chinese traveller monk, Fa Hein who came to Srilanka.

A large rock cave where prehistoric human remains were found. Nothing much to watch around, just a buddha statue inside the cave.

Place is calm and quiet But not well maintained.

40,000 years or more of Prehistoric importance is behind this cave. Government and archaeological departments of Sri Lanka have done a little to showcase this place. Its a pitiful situation and missed opportunity for tourism development.

This is a natural rock cave set in the middle of the mountain. And this the biggest natural rock cave in the country. Archaeologists have unearthed remains of ancient primates who lived there 37000 years ago. Also they have found various other artifacts which reveals the details of the ancient civilisation. The cave it self is huge and no water will come inside even in the worst storm or rain. There is a temple there which is few hundred years old and the drawings were done using colour paint fashioned from various tree barks and part .

One of the greatest archaeological site in Sri Lanka belongs to prehistoric era. You can easily go there using public transport or from your own vehicle. Road conditions are good except narrowness. Previously you can climb the rock using the footpath next to the cave. Unfortunately, path was closed now. Place was very well maintained and information center is available at the temple.

Its an archeological site which was located on provincial boundry.And also, it is a south asia's largest cave which's on couldron. Cool and beautiful site to visit and can learn lot of things on ancient culture and ancient man in srilanka. A local guide represents in the cave and he will helps you.After the climbing stone stairs you can enter to the cave.Budhdha stratues are located inside of the cave and can worship freely. Can park your vehicle near the temple or car park.
