Sanctuary of Arantzazu
Sanctuary
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
The Sanctuary of Arantzazu is an avant-garde church made of stone and concrete, featuring stained glass windows and a mural-filled crypt. The surrounding area offers stunning views and scenic hiking trails, such as the accessible Gomitzegi walk. Visitors can also enjoy the mouth-watering flavors of Basque cuisine, including fresh seafood and delectable pintxos. The unique architecture and peaceful mountain setting make it a must-visit destination in the Basque Country.
We didn't go inside the sanctuary, but the architecture is interesting to look at from the outside.
It's in a very scenic spot with great views. There are many hikes that start from this place. We did the accessible Gomitzegi walk, which was pleasant and very well constructed but it was hard to find the start of the walk. We eventually found a path which starts to the right of the Goiko Benta restaurant, and the official start of the accessible route was a little way on from that.

Inspiring architecture. The depth and size draws in incredible peace in this modern church. The pictures does not do it justice.

Nada que ver con un santuario clásico. Muy diferente. Su modernidad es única e invita al recogimiento. Me impactó. Un lugar maravilloso para ver. Otra forma de iconografía religiosa. No me extraña que en el siglo pasado hubiera unos años que no se viera con buenos ojos las pinturas del Santuario

Nothing to do with a classic sanctuary. Very different. Its modernity is unique and invites contemplation. He blew me away. A wonderful place to see. Another form of religious iconography. It does not surprise me that in the last century there were some years when the paintings of the Sanctuary were not viewed favorably.

Interesting architecture and a nice view of the hillsides around the area. The best part was the various stained glass windows inside the church, they were really creative with great colours. And a very cute and cuddly cat. The public toilets had no seats and were pretty filthy.

One of the most unusual churches I've ever been to. Very interesting architecture, great location, free parking (right next to it), an all-around great experience! Definitely stop in a town of Oñati before or after you visit the church!!! That's just a stunning village, very different from what you usually see in Spain or even the rest of the Basque country

Bodegas Franco Espanolas is a century-old winery in Logrono, just five minutes walking from the center of the city. The winery offers tours and tastings of its wine cellar, as well as individual or group tours. In addition to wine tasting, the trip also includes a visit to the winemaker herself.
I had a one day stop on my camino to Santiago. I decided to visit the Bodegas Franco Espanolas. It was a good idea because it was fanatastic. I booked a private tour in a small group. It was absolut interesting. At the end of the Tour we had a little Wine tasting.
The Tourguide made a great & perfect job.

Century-old bodega in one of the most beautiful and charming capitals of Spain🇪🇸. The guided tour is full of interesting facts and history, they have a massive infrastructure beside the river just in front the iron bridge. The place combines cultural heritage from French 🇫🇷 and Spanish 🇪🇸 bodegas 🍷 with a robust selection of local wines.
Rodrigo Tavares — Google review
Really enjoyable tour of this historical winemaker, with a small group thanks to the time of year. The lady that showed us around was both interesting and knowledgeable, and spoke good English. The tasting at the end of the tour included two great wines, plus more meat than the six of us could manage!
Drew Noble — Google review
Beautiful winery and grounds. The tour into the cellars was amazing! Grab a tasting and see if they have anything special for sale in the shop. They will sell their vintage wines but be prepared to pay vintage pricing. Definitely book a tour a week or so ahead of time to be safe but we had no issue getting in on the same day... We originally (accidentally) booked a Spanish tour and were able to swap to the later English tour without issue.
Carl Miller — Google review
Enjoyed a great winery tour with Mario our guide. The tour was conducted in English with humour it was very informative, interesting and added considerably to my limited knowledge of vine culture.
Tasted one red, two whites and a rosie.
Simon O Sullivan — Google review
This is a fun tour and the grounds have been there for such a long time, the historical photos on the tour are really cool. There is a collection of old bottles that would be amazing to get a chance to try. At the end of the tour you get to sample some wine with some snacks to clear the pallet.

Bodegas Franco-Españoles is worthwhile a visit. Just minutes to walk from the city center you'll find this fine Bodega. The tour was interesting with a friendly guide and the enormous wine cellars are very impressive. The smell there is beguiling for any wine lover. You'll have the chance to taste four wines of choice. I was excited about all of the wines i have tasted. Very recommendable.

We took the tour led by Kare, a lady who really expressed her enthusiasm and pride through her story and her uplifting ways.
The tour ended with a small tasting of their wines, also nicely explained by Kare on how to het the best feeling on what you drink. Very well done.
After buying some wine from their shop she even told us the best places to land for tapas in Laurel Street.
Thank you so much Kare for your nice way with us. It truly elevated our stay in Logroňes.
Jappe Willems — Google review
The winery is nice, elegant and the wines are good. They begin the tour by showing you the oak tonnels that would store 30,000 liters of wine. Because the underground storage is next to the river, it is unusually cold, therefore, they had to light fire underneath the tonnels to begin fermentation. The tour is slightly different so it is interesting. You choose two out of eight wines for the tasting. They offer white and red. My favorite is the single variety tempranillo.
The Calle del Laurel (laurel street) is a famous and narrow street in Logrono, Spain. It's filled with restaurants, bars, and shops that offer an excellent selection of tapas. The street is also known for its beautiful old buildings and lively atmosphere.

Concatedral de Santa María de la Redonda de Logroño
The Concatedral de Santa María de la Redonda is an ancient cathedral located in the city of La Redonda, Spain. The cathedral has a breathtaking baroque appearance on the outside with magnificent interiors and twin towers that depict the monumental baroque bell Rioja.

Unfortunately the main Cathedral of Logroño was closed while we stayed in the city. It was a pity as we had no chance to visit the interior. From the outside it looks nice though.
Franco Mangiacasale Fern?ndez — Google review
An imposing cathedral with the two twin towers over its beautifully carved Western doors looking down over the Plaza mayor of Logroño. Although not as grandiose as the Cathedrals of Burgos, León, Oviedo or Santiago it is still well worth a visit and has some excellent structures and pieces. Particularly worth viewing are the domes in the Eastern section, Its golden alter piece, elaborate southern entrance, and western Chapels.

If you want to see a work of Michelangelo, you should pay with a 50 cents coin to illuminate it, the same goes to another room inside the church (Sacristy?) otherwise the church is free.

Place was ok, but nothing special.
Very big and only one waiter, who was trying his best, but...
Prices were very very expensive, with almost 16€ for 4 bottles of beer
Forest trails to the source of the Urederra river, with waterfalls pouring into turquoise pools.
Beautiful view!
Ennobled area and easy trail, total about 6 km, it took us 2-2.5 hours, there are signs. Picnic area with 5 tables and benches in the shade.
The toilet is at the very beginning, in the parking area, you will find a one-story small building.
Be sure to reserve a parking space, otherwise you will not be able to park. There are many tourists on weekends and in summer.
Nadia Rozumna — Google review
You have to book your stay in advance. Price depends on your vehicle: car 5€, motorbike 2€, caravan 8€;
The walk from the parking spot to the end is around 6km back and forth. The water is beautiful in colour and you can even see fish swimming since it is cristal clear. You can also see vultures circeling above the rocks on a sunny day. We had 37°C but due to the shade of the forest the hike was still enjoyable.

Great and unusual place. The free outdoor “termas”/baths are lovely and hot. Each of the three pools getting slightly cooler as the water progresses through them. There is also the river used as a plunge pool. Just visited. It was about 12C outside but lovely to sit in the pools. There is a car park and you can walk down to the pools wrapped in a towel/gown or get changed in the seating area by the pools. Well worth a visit.

The water temperature is amazing, I went there around 18:00 of a Monday and there were less than 10 people on the area.
You can bring your dog on the area as long as the dog behaves.
Parking is very cheap and close to the termas.

So far my favourite thermal bath! Crystal clear waters of 40 degrees and 3 pools to choose from. Additionally cold pool available in the river. During the morning time there wasn't many people.

Five stars to mother nature 0 stars to the Spanish people who treat this amazing place like their personal trash can. It's a real shame. There are no toilets so Saturday morning it stinks of urin around the baths. How can Italians respect their thermal baths but Spanish people can't?

Spectacular place to bathe in hot springs in the middle of nature. One of my favorite places in La Rioja. It is a pity that it has become so popular, years ago when they were less known they were idyllic. Still, even though it is quite crowded, it is a must visit place. Being at night, while it snows, in the thermal water, is indescribable.

A not-particularly-enjoyable dinosaur theme park. Any links with the genuine dinosaur footprints, which are five minute's drive away at the Icnitas De Enciso, are tenuous to say the least - the "museum" here is a real afterthought. If you want to actually find out about the dinosaur footprints, go to the Centro Paleontológico de Enciso in town instead. The food was mediocre at best - bagged salad with tasteless tomatoes in Spain should be a crime - and overpriced. We only came here to eat because the restaurant in the Posada Santa Rita in town was full, so unless you actively want to come here make sure you book at the posada before coming to Enciso. The staff looked like they'd rather be anywhere else. We did see kids enjoying themselves in the pools, but that was about it.

Ideal place to be with the hole family, children and adults will be happy here. Place of conservation and study of "birds of prey" in a marvellous and little unknown land, La Rioja. They have the best wine from Spain in this region but not only, you can also find hidden jewels like "Tierra Rapaz". The place is large, with two bird exhibits, day and night prey birds, worthy of the best zoos all-over the world. The love and affection they have for the birds can be seen in each place of the enclosure. A must-see if you're in northern Spain.

Tierra Rapaz is a Shelter for birds. Especially predators like Hawks of all kinds aswell as eagels, stitches, and many more. They take birds in that wouldn't survive in the wild and train them ,very well if I might add. The whole team is very friendly, and most of them speak good English. This place is well worth the visit. For both hound and old. It's an amazing experience. The have a fantastic and very impressive Show, and let you come into real up close contact with the birds. On January 17, 1925 it was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest. Its impressive Bell Tower stands out. The church is Gothic in style and its construction lasted from the 12th century to the beginning of the 14th century. In front of the main door of the church (which we could not see as it was being restored), there is an original atrium free of Gothic arches. We were lucky enough to be able to see its interior for free since they were celebrating a mass. The High Altar has an impressive Renaissance altarpiece presided over by Gothic carvings of the Virgin and the Christ of the Good Death. The photos are from November 2015.

(Translated by Google) The Church of Santa María is in the Gothic style, highlighting its imposing façade on its exterior, which has a great iconographic richness, in which the influence of the Nôtre Dame de Paris workshops is perceived. It is one of the most important Gothic buildings in Navarra.
Construction work began in the first third of the 13th century and began under the "ownership" of the church of San Pedro. It had its own vicar in the 15th century and achieved the rank of parish from the Council of Trent (1545-1563). It was used by the Navarrese monarchs in the great festivities and solemn acts.
Outside, under a large rose window, we find the large portal that is made up of eight archivolts that display an exuberant plant decoration. Among the litter you can discover two praying figures under canopies; possibly they are Juana I of Navarra and her husband, the King of France, Felipe el Hermoso, who reigned in Navarre at the time the portal was built.

Awesome Palace. Really worth visiting as it wasn’t built for strategic reasons but to be for fit for a King and his Queen. We also paid for an audio guide and this was worth it, you could share 1 between two or more people so save cost. There are a lot of rooms and towers to explore we spent an hour wandering through you could easily spend several hours here. The Palace has been rebuilt when you see the old photos they have done a marvellous job, and the audio gives you insights on how it use to look on the inside. We were in a motorhome and used the parking 5 minutes away.

Olite is quite simply magnificent and its crowning glory is the Palace. If you are within driving distance do not miss it. Apart from the Palace the town itself is full of interesting buildings and lovely nooks and crannies where little details on doors, walls, rejas and buildings convey a sense of an ancient culture and a splendid history. There is simply nothing in the UK to compare to Olite. And is is just one of hundreds of such glories in Spain.

At the top, Santa María de Ujué welcomes us, the fortress church of Santa María S.XI-XII-XIV, a national monument and one of the most important manifestations of medieval architecture in Navarra. Currently, two towers remain, Cuatro Vientos and Picos, which look more like a fortress than a sanctuary.
One of the jewels of the church of Santa María is the South Door, from the 14th century. One of the best works of Navarrese Gothic.
Inside, a Gothic lattice separates the Romanesque chevet from the Gothic-style central nave. In the central apse, the image of Santa María de Ujué is preserved, it is one of the oldest Romanesque images in Navarra. (1190)
The image of the Virgin of Ujué is a unique carving made of wood around 1190.

Good place to spend a day with children. If your children like animals, they will have a wide variety of animals to see. The rides are fun, and here I mention the Bobsleigh, the tubing and the self drive boats. On the negative side, this Parc is huge and there are large distances to be covered. If you are with small children, they will get tired pretty fast. The day we went it was very crowded too, so there was a lot of queueing up to get to the rides, anywhere from 15 minutes to almost an hour for the bobsleigh. Parking is free but quite far away, if you want to park closer to the Parc, you pay 9 euros for a day in a parking place that is not only nearer to the entrance but your car is also protected from the sun.

Sendaviva is a great place to spend the day with your kids. It's very family friendly and perfect for younger children. Kids over 10 would probably get bored pretty quickly. I didn't see any of the shows. It was a hot sunny day, so all of the water attractions were really popular. The prices were pretty fair in comparison with other amusement park type places. There was really only one main eating place which was decent. The only real complaint (and reason for the 4 stars) was the lack of staff. The ice cream/slushy station had a really long line and the poor guy working had a lot of grumpy people to deal with. There was like one person working each attraction and most of the workers seemed less than thrilled to be there. That being said, the bumper boats guy was great! We will definitely go back again. But maybe in the fall when it won't be meltingly hot.

Worth a visit. There is a wine shop. There were wine tasting facilities but we were told that they don't do wine tastings? Very disappointing

Beautiful place. Free parking available. Fee is 1.8€ but with the same ticket you can also visit the wine museum, a real cracker.
The guide, Ana, was amazing and gave a myriad of details during the visit.

Bardenas Reales is a vast desert region known for its soaring canyons, sandstone cliffs, and rocky outcrops. The Hotel Aire de Bardenas offers a unique stay with its modernist design rising unexpectedly from the rocky earth at the border of the desert. Visitors can explore the area by car, quad, or enduro bikes but should be cautious as some parts are challenging to navigate.
Stunning place!! We explored the Bardenas on bikes. Recommend to go early to beat the crowds and avoid the afternoon heat.

Fantastic castle in great condition, but only open on Wednesday afternoon, Saturdays and Sundays. Check the opening times before you visit!

Not sure actually what is the purpose of this structure. It’s clearly reconstructed, maybe nice venue for a concert but hardly appealing as an historical building, also it’s located in the quite ugly derelict part of town, so no I won’t be returning there

This is a great castle to bring the kids. They can run around and have a great time and not feel as if they are going to ruin some priceless artifact. The woman who gives the tours is very knowledgeable about both the castle and the surrounding areas and is wonderful with little ones. There is a lovely shaded olive grove for picnics or to run off energy.

(Translated by Google) I give it a star because although the exterior of the castle is impressive in the guided tour they teach you a minimum of it. € 3.5 spent to see some stairs and three rooms and one of it so renovated that it does not even look like the palace. The star is for the guide who really deserves it because the poor in a minimum of space immerses you with passion in the history of the palace and the pope. Thanks

Be sure to visit the Golden Room or Protocol Room, as well as the private bedroom of Don Pedro de Luna, decorated with beautiful wooden coffered ceilings, along with some other rooms.
The church of San Juan Bautista was originally built in the Mudejar style. You will be able to see a panel of octagonal ties in both the tower and the nave. The Mudejar plasterwork with bow decoration on the vaults dates back to the 17th century.

The Aquarium of Zaragoza offers a fascinating look at aquatic life found in rivers around the world. With more than 300 species, it's one of the largest and most popular aquariums in Europe. The tanks hold about two and a half liters of water, symbolizing the primal waters from which life first evolved.
Nany interesting things to watch! Many aquariums, plants, animals. Quite big area to visit.

The only aspect I didn't like much was the cage with the little monkeys... I don't see much of a purpose in the aquarium

Absolutely superb aquarium. Apparently the largest freshwater aquarium in Europe making it a pretty unusual experience - rivers rather than seawater wildlife. Focusued on the total river ecology (so not only the creatures that live in the water) with a look at the Amazon (of course), the Mekong, the Ebro and the Darling rivers. Superb exhibition. Absolutely loved it.
Fiona Reynolds — Google review
I feel that the Aquarium deserves and needs lots of improvements. For 17€ a person I wasn't 100% pleased.
Edit: I felt that I didn't say anything positive in this review and that's not fair. The aquarium from the outside looks really nice and the surrounding area is really beautiful.
The animals had lots of space and seemed that they are kept in really good conditions.
Some of the things that needs improvement are: scratched (a lot) glass, broken pieces of wood/plastic, more texts and information (in English too).
Tudor — Google review
A bit expensive (18€ Euros for adults) but it’s well worth it! There are lots of fish that aren’t shown in other aquariums, and each exhibition is well explained (in Spanish).
אביב לדרר — Google review
After visiting the Aquarium in Zaragoza while visiting for a few day my husband and I took the opportunity to visit. There were many different fish and endangered animals and although very educational for us to experience these species I was overwhelmed with sadness to see them incarcerated in such confined spaces to their natural habitat. They seemed almost comatosed which impacts on their quality of life.
The alligators and snake were in such small environments for their size and length. I found these sights particularly disturbing and distressing.
Sharon Sansom — Google review
Beautiful Aquarium with lots of different species of fish and reptile from all over the world. It is a treasure to enjoy if you love nature. Well maintained, healthy fish, some mammals and birds Perfect for adults and children. Love it!

A very surprising aquarium! It looks small from the outside but it has a big variety of animals divided into different rivers from around the world. We all enjoyed our visit, kids and adults! Nice visit if you are in the area!
The Aljafería Palace is a beautiful and historic Muslim palace in Zaragoza, which dates back to the 11th century. It is used as the seat of the Aragonese parliament, and is one of the city's most important historical landmarks.
This was a very interesting place and we are glad we went. The architecture is fascinating blend of styles that accumulated across its 1000 year history, and there are displays about the geography, flag design, and more.
Be sure to get their app (free) in advance as it has a lot of information and some cool virtual reality experiences. There is very limited signage otherwise.
Also, they have free guided tours daily in Spanish, and free tours during the summer months in English and French.
Michael Schackwitz — Google review
If you love architecture this is a must see attraction.
However be aware that the city of Zaragoza is not good for tourists. You may ask “why?”… well because the whole city decided to take a 4h break during the evening to have what they call siesta.
So basically you can’t tour the city. But anyway great piece of history!
Diego Aquino — Google review
This was a nice late afternoon stop on a hot summer day, interesting rooms to explore and nice architecture details. There was a gravel parking lot toward the back and a nice little park around the grounds. Just be mindful of the time when you go as it is closed between 2:30-4pm.

Tickets sold before the entrance, closer to the street, but there was a guard informing everyone where the tickets are sold not far from the stand.
The fortress is beautiful with lots of interesting details and great inner courtyards out of which two were accessible.
At the end of the tour you will end up in the part they use for the city council (and if you see the screen with the political parties, don't google it).
Djordje Stevanic — Google review
We arrived at the entrance somewhere in the middle of the day. While waiting in line, we heard the guy selling tickets that there are no more places / tickets for sale at the moments. We went to their website, reserved two tickets 30 minutes in advance, we took a small walk around the fortress until the time passed and we returned at the ticket kiosk. We picked our tickets, paid for them and joined the fortress. Therefore I recommend you to buy / reserve tickets in advance. The fortress is beautiful, it displays the impressive architecture of Arabia by the construction of the columns. The rooms of the fortress have beautifully painted and designed ceilings. Overall it took us about 1h to go through the whole fortress. This place is not handicap friendly. There is a free toilet inside and no parking on premises.

Taking a tour would be great as it will provide you a better understanding the history of the castle.
Just one guard was not friendly to an English speaking people. Other than that, the place was amazing

I loved it! The guided tour was wonderful- an hour long and included in the €5 price. Only catch is it's in Spanish, but highly recommend it if you have an intermediate level or up.
Oh, and in case no one else said it, yes- you have to book in advance but you pay at the ticket office at the time of your tour.

Surprised with the visit. Very positive. There was queue just before the museum opened but it was easily managed and moved quickly. We were three and just paid 7€ for a guided visit with a group, really affordable. Our tour guide, Alvaro gave us all the details to understand the whole structure. Although it was extremely noisy and in my opinion, school visits should have specifically reserved slots or even days. It's great cultural place for them to learn but also hard to keep kids on low level of noise when the excitement hits. Other than that, a great day learning about it. Defo a must go when in Zaragoza.
Macarena Qb — Google review
After visiting Seville, Granada, and Cordoba and seeing the influence of the moors, this renovated and still used palace was a different experience that nonetheless adds to the mix of different cultural influences on Spain. Make sure to take advantage of the audio tour. It presents just in time context making the history and location memorable.

Absolutely amazing! It’s truly worth visiting if you have time! The visit is paid, but it’s worth seeing this beautiful place! Arabic influence made imprints on many things and it is interesting to see such a place in a Christian country. I personally think it’s worth taking a guide to hear the story as well.
Intricate elements, beautiful ceilings, nice garden and truly impressive structure!
Anya Nura — Google review
Disappointing impressive historic building surrounded by poor urban planning, awful urban buildings around ruin the original meaning of the place, it is also used by the government, they should not use it for hosting government here. Interior furniture does not match the building or history in it, very weird. Visit only if you are in Zaragoza, this had nothing compared to the Alahambra, just the style.
Chris — Google review
A small but historically significant castle to visit. Interesting process by which to purchase tickets. Reserve a slot online, take your reservation to the ticket booth outside the castle and pay the ticket price either in cash or by card. A hybrid of online booking.
And a beautiful place to visit.

Palace Aljaferia and Parliament of Aragon. Worthwhile to visit. Tour will take about 1.5-2 hours depending upon your level of interest. Limited signage in English. Audio guides are available, but glitchy. Tour guides are available.
Note: Google Maps directs you to a different side of the palace. Instead, get directions to Cafe Corner on Calle de los Diputados and there's not only a parking garage directly across the street, but the entrance and ticket booth to Aljaferia is there as well.

You NEED to make an online reservation first. I assume it’s not as busy outside of the summer months, but I had to come back the next day because I didn’t realize they would run out of tickets. A few other people were in my situation too, so it’s quite common.
I highly recommend one of the guided visits. It really helped appreciate and understand everything we were seeing. There’s one in English at 11 AM and one in French at 5 PM and a bunch in Spanish.
It was a wonderful visit. I really loved everything about it and I spent quite some time there. It’s really cool to see the Muslim palace, the Christian palace in the modern parliament in one place.

Amazing and historical building to visit. Reserve 1-2h to calmly stroll around the building and to view all of its rooms. There are several places where you can stop to read about the local history. There are restrooms and a place for getting foods and drinks in case you need a pit stop.

Historic building although most of it was destroyed and rebuild and clearly in a way which stands out from the rest. The tour it's self Is listed as guided although it's 100%not. And nothing is really in English so it's difficult to learn about the history. Most parts of the building you can not access.

The Aljafería Palace is beautiful. I couldn't help but feel like I was experiencing a mini version of the Alhambra, but with significantly fewer crowds. While many sections have already been restored, the ongoing restoration work doesn't detract from its charm. The palace's exterior is particularly striking, especially during sunset and at night.
