They try to live with local products as much as possible and provide the guests with it, so no Coca Cola or Fernandes ice cream or the like.
If you stay for dinner you will get a fantastic meal: ours was made with trapon fish, delicious.
In the museum, Bas talks very enthusiastically about the history and also about how he acquired all kinds of items on the second-hand market and from elsewhere. He himself is a walking museum in itself.
A big disappointment for us was that there were a lot of mosquitoes. I therefore advise everyone to inform in advance whether there is a mosquito plague at that moment and to protect yourself. As a result, we couldn't really go for a walk in the garden and Plantation.
We left with the boat from Leonsberg and had to sail for at least 2 hours and that is a long time.
For the boat trip I would advise departing from Katwijk or Mariënburg.

Plage des Hattes, also known as Awala Beach, is a significant nesting site for various species of sea turtles, with the giant leatherback turtles being the most prominent. These majestic creatures, some weighing up to 600kg, come ashore from April to July to lay their eggs. The hatching season occurs between July and September when visitors can witness the young turtles making their way into the sea.
Never Been there looks nice
Andra Page — Google review
Awala Beach, located in French Guiana, is renowned for its significance as a nesting site for sea turtles. Several species of turtles visit the beach to lay their eggs, offering a unique opportunity to witness this natural wonder.
The most common turtle species that can be found nesting on Awala Beach is the Leatherback Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea), the largest of all living turtles. These majestic creatures can reach impressive sizes, with some individuals exceeding 6 feet (1.8 meters) in length. They are known for their distinctive leathery carapace and their ability to dive to incredible depths.
The nesting season for Leatherback Turtles typically occurs between April and August, with the peak nesting months being May and June. During this time, female turtles make their way to the beach under the cover of darkness to dig their nests and deposit their eggs. It is an awe-inspiring sight to witness the massive turtles emerging from the ocean and laboriously making their way up the sandy shore.
In addition to Leatherback Turtles, other species that may occasionally visit Awala Beach include Green Turtles (Chelonia mydas) and Hawksbill Turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata). While less common than Leatherbacks, they also contribute to the rich biodiversity of the area.
To observe the nesting process, it is important to join organized tours or guided excursions led by local experts who can provide valuable insights while ensuring the safety and well-being of the turtles. These tours often take place at night to coincide with the turtles' nesting activities.
Visiting Awala Beach during the turtle nesting season offers a unique and unforgettable experience. It allows you to witness the incredible journey of these ancient creatures and to play a part in their conservation efforts. Remember to respect the guidelines provided by the tour guides and authorities to ensure the protection of the turtles and their nesting sites.

Beautiful islands, nice views despite the fact that they used to be the penal colony. We only visited the Royale, it was enough to give us an idea of how terrible the lives of the prisoners there used to be. It was a nice walk around the island even though the temperature was high about 87 degrees Fahrenheit because there were lots of trees which gave us shade along with some breeze from the ocean. This island was used as a prison in the 19th and 20th centuries and it was a place to keep exiled political prisoners, and because of the violent treatment of the guards with the prisoners, it became known as Devil's Island. Alfred Dreyfus is among the most famous people incarcerated in this prison. The movie Papion was inspired by the real life story of one of the escaped prisoners of this place.
hossein mohammadi — Google review
These islands made a big impression on me. Climbing the long pathway leading up to the prison compound on St Joseph Island, I couldn't help but think about the effort that had gone into lugging and positioning those stones. The cells themselves are nightmarish, with the remains of bunk-bed brackets clearly apparent in what was a tiny floor area even for one prisoner. Row upon row of these would have been in almost total darkness, in sweltering heat.
Georgina Harvey — Google review
I was wrongfully accused of treason and imprisoned here for many years. It was my good fortune to meet an Italian priest who educated me in the arts & sciences as well as sword fighting. I escaped with the body of my dear deceased friend, the priest, and with a hidden fortune and help from pirates, I made my way home and took my revenge on those who stole my life. Alas, that is a tale for another post. Overall, I wouldn’t recommend a stay on the island.

Well, while wracking my brains to find an interesting location to spend my vacation I, recieved a call from my good friend Gomez Addams who coincidently, was in the same predicament. He and, his wife scrimshawed it down to 'Death Valley' which is located in the 'States' or, Devils Island the former 'penal resort' right off the coast of good old French Guiana in South America. So, 'it just so happens' it to be situated right there by Guiana where it also 'just so happens' that both the Adams' and I spent a lovely holiday at the Jonestown resort.
Gomez, thought that it would be a 'Capital Idea' recreat the fun we had had at Jonestown on Devils Island.
I, said 'sounds like a plan' Old chap and, we made preparations for the trip.
Long story short we, wound up having a wonderfully terrible time and, 'as luck would have it' we ran into some old friends who were on holiday as well, the Munsters. What's, more is we were lucky to get reservations smack in the middle of 'Hurricane Season'. It's, been cloudy and rainy every day so far and now, there is now word of a Tropical Storm brewing just off the coast. Who, could ask for more, right? This'll be better than Christmassing at Donner Pass.

Amazing place. This basically is a set of three Islands. The Devil, the Royale and St. Joseph. A tourist is allowed only on the last two. A ferry takes you from Kourou which is famous for the Guiana Space Centre. The photos of cellular jail posted here is on Royale island. Papillon was imprisoned here in one of these 3 by 6 feet room with an iron cot. The views of the Devil island is fantastic from this island.

The Guiana Space Centre, also known as the Centre Spatial Guyanais, is a must-visit destination in French Guiana. To tour this space center and witness a rocket launch, visitors need to make arrangements in advance. The three-hour bus tours offer an insightful exploration of the massive launch pad and provide a captivating experience. While the tours are typically conducted in French, English explanations can be provided at bus stops for smaller groups.
Attended the French Guyana Space Centre tour which took about 3.5 hours including registration and waiting time. Tour was very interesting with background and history of the rocket launches and visits to the different rocket launch pads by bus. The tour was conducted in French but the tour guide was very gracious and kind to separately explain to me in English. Fascinating and worthwhile tour

I think if it is your first time in French Guiana or in the jungle/amazon forest this should be your starting point.
The staff is incredibly nice, they were speaking english and also suggested other places worth visiting around.
In the zoo there are a lot of bueatifull animals, thankfully as I have understood there are in the zoo because of animal rescue (mostly). Fortunately there are a lot of English descriptions.
I really liked the jungle around it was almost like a meditation exercise
Jakub Miętki — Google review
It's a good way to know and see all the animals in Guiana especially pumas, Jaguars and eagles since it's almost impossible and too dangerous to see in the wild however closures are small in general. It's almost impossible for some birds to fly freely so I hope they'll change the environment for them.

Interesting! Heard from coworker about the suspension bridges, but were closed on the day we visited. At the monkey exhibit, they were wild monkies roaming about. Somewhat surreal, like people visiting prison.
Lotsa ant mounds. The leaf cutter trails were winding and quite long. One particular trail was over a bridge. So funny, like crossing the “pond”. We walked very carefully, tried not to disturb the scent trail nor crush any ants.

Fort is named after Cépérou, a celebrated indigenous chief and was built in 1643 to protect the city of Cayenne. Required some easy uphill climbing to reach the fort. Good panoramic view of Cayenne Town. Free entry. Saw a family enjoying a picnic at site in Sunday afternoon.
CK Cheong — Google review
A small nice place with a panoramic view. Not much is written down about the history of the place but it has a nice atmosphere.

Not much to see there except views of the town. Free entry.
There were some weird guys around noon when I went to the fort, they started to talk to me in a hostile way with brazilian accent. Luckily nothing happened as there were other people around, but I felt I could have been attacked or robbed (that's the downside of the French policy of "multiculturalism" and "open doors"). Be careful.

(Translated by Google) Mixed review for this museum located right next to Place des Palmistes
The strong points :
- The place, an old Creole house which puts us in a special atmosphere
- a superb collection of insects which is worth the detour
- stuffed animals which are also worth the detour because they are specific to the species found in Guyana
- some beautiful works on the history of Guyana and slavery
The weak spots :
- The museum needs a refresh, we feel the lack of resources
- a lack of explanations and information. For insects I find it a shame that we cannot have the name of each species. This lack of information is found throughout the museum, which nevertheless offers very interesting themes. Way to go deeper!
(Original)
Moyen d'approfondir davantage !

We only stopped a couple of hours and expected to try the local cuisine but it's more Caribbean style than Typical Guyanese or amazonian cuisine and then a bit expensive for what it is. On the other hand the service was very friendly and quite fast.

Very nice back yard especially in a hot day. Go for the front patio in the evening with a nice view over the Palmiste Square with the light streets on and people buzzing around.
"Crevette cocktail" is the specialty item of the menu and it is highly recommended in this place.
Don't expect the best of the service though!
Eriola Kasemi — Google review
Not worth the money they're charging for the hotel room. At least not until construction is complete as they're creating new rooms on the 3rd floor. There is no elevator and the stairways are long. Construction noise starts at 8am and the hallways have plenty of sawdust. The wifi doesn't get as far as the rooms.

Heritage Charm
The hotel is housed in a lovely heritage building, which by itself is a sightseeing tourist attraction. The property alludes charm and character from every nook and corner - be it the lovely restaurant and killer terrace seating, or the decor of the room and the common areas. Definitely, the best option in town, if you are looking for a historic vibe but don't want to splurge a lot. However. the biggest letdown of the stay was the extremely poor connectivity. The Internet barely worked. Television never functioned due to very weak signals. And even the credit card machine was struggling because of weak connectivity. Apart from this, the hotel is a jewel in the old town. The reason i am giving 3 stars is because of the weak connectivity and the poor hospitality & service.
LOCATION: IN the very heart of the old town
DINE + DRINK: The Bar Palmistes is THE place in town - to see and be seen. The vibe in the evening (especially in the balcony) is just too fantastic to be missed!
ROOM: We stayed in Room 1, so this review is based on that; VIEW:Lovely view of the Place des Palmistes and the swinging Coconut trees and colonial buildings; SIZE: Spacious enough for 2 adults and simple baggage; AIR-CON: Perfectly functioning cooler that helped in setting the perfect room temperature; BED: Comfortable bed that played the expected part of putting me to sleep; BATHROOM: Stand-in shower; TOILETRIES: Cosmetics by L’occitane!
FACILITIES: No Gym or Pool, Pure Guyanese chill
SERVICE: Friendly staff that took care of all our needs with a smile, but in general the service levels of the restaurant and bar staff can improve a lot! Speed or service, attention to customers, and ability to tackle foreign visitors - all great areas for improvement!

Remember to take 2/3 old bananas for the saïmiris.

great place for walking or jogging! Do not visit this place with dogs as it may attract wild animals. the terrain of the trail is different; it is advisable to wear suitable shoes and clothing. Since it was my first visit to the jungle trail I really enjoyed it.

Lots of mokeys welcome you at the island. They are only interested in any food you have but we're not allowed to feed them. They are not aggressive at all. If you wish to have them on your shoulder or hand, show them some small colorful objects. They come around but make sure not to give them.

(Translated by Google) Nice walk, aperitif and music on the boat, our skipper knew how to set the mood. On site, if you bring a few bananas, you will quickly be covered with little Surimy monkeys, not aggressive at all but real little food thieves! Bring your hiking shoes for a tour of the island of around 2 hours, with some hilly terrain.

(Translated by Google) Superb experience. Well, it's the fifth time, but it's always a pleasure to see these little monkeys, who climb on you. Departure in the morning for 40 minutes by boat, along the river and seeing very pretty landscapes. Once arrived, we took the main path that goes around the island, accompanied by the monkeys, who are on the lookout for the slightest crumb that might come out of your bag. After 2 hours, picnic on a small beach, alone in the world, with the sky and the water as the only horizon. Moreover, you will have the opportunity to swim in water above 26 degrees.
It’s a must-see in Guyana!

The church is not in very good condition: there are cracks, the paint is peeling all over the building, the interior is in poor condition despite a plaque on which is written "maintained by heritage of France ". I am afraid that the church is like the village of Roura, which falls into disuse day after day due to the non-maintenance of the buildings.
However, the church fits perfectly into the landscape.

(Translated by Google) I really enjoyed getting to know the municipality of Oiapoque, it is very interesting as it is an ancient history from indigenous times, although it is already rising a lot, but this way you can see the prominence that this small place shows and represents many things for various lands since it is largely disappeared by account of the city's provisions, especially in indigenous lands, they are more affected by these evolutions of the city, it's more interesting that you continued with the culture, I thought it was interesting, one day I'm going to visit there, I really liked it 🥰🥰

The collection has more than 300 pieces, most of which were produced on commission by the museum together with indigenous communities, who also participate in the management of the institution.
It is worth noting that there is a good frequency of French people coming from Cayena - French Guyanea.

The Milton de Souza Correa Stadium is uniquely positioned along the Equator, ensuring that the midfield line aligns perfectly with this geographic marker. In each soccer game held there, the teams not only defend their own goals but also symbolically represent the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. This arrangement adds a geopolitical dimension to matches played at this stadium, reminiscent of a grand game of Risk. The second half brings a switch in roles as the teams exchange goals.

This stadium is just in the middle of the Ecuador line! Brilliant!
Gabriel Braico Dornas — Google review
The stadium is built so that the midfield line follows the Equator exactly. In every soccer game there, each team isn't just defending its own goal. One side is defending the Northern Hemisphere, and the other side the Southern Hemisphere, like a giant game of Risk. But the geopolitical overtones switch in the second half, of course, when the teams swap goals.
