The palace is beautiful, but the staff isn’t great at all. I came at 10h to have a guided tour at 10:30. This time, I was at the hall, but at 10:40 I was told that they decided to “skip the morning tour”, and the next one is only in one hour.
It’s not the way the tourism should work. I came a long way to see the palace, but this people don’t care about your time nor the cultural heritage they represent. So come with your own guide, or avoid this place at all. Disappointing.

Great side trip to see the hotel on the way to or from Petropolis and the Imperial palace. The restaurant nearby looks great as well. There are nice plaques with information with some in English as well.

Amazing look into the past, beautifully preserved in Hollywood rococo style. The ground floor and gardens are now open to the public and host cultural events. Bonus: the toilets look like they're from The Shining (1980).

Beautiful palace, and some couples take wedding photography there. I really liked the round hall with incredibly charming echo. You can add some of your graffiti in the chalk room 😎

It’s a short stop before Imperial Palace that you must stop and visit on your Petropolis trip.
As you can see the outside is something out of a village in Switzerland but the inside were all glammed up!
Each room has its own personality and characteristic - for a purpose. The kitchen although empty just shows how big and thought through this place once was.
There’s a hotel on the top floor which I think would be nice. Petropolis itself is a cozy and cute little town. Very different to buzzing Rio!

Brazilian version of The Shining. The creepy kid's playroom was a nice touch. The massive concrete dome room has increadible acoustic properties. This was one of my favourite surprises in all of Brazil.

The Petropolis Wax Museum is a relatively new addition to the city, showcasing hyper-realistic wax replicas of both Brazilian and international celebrities. Visitors can expect to see famous figures such as Batman, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Mr. Bean, Nelson Mandela, and Superman alongside important Brazilian icons and leaders. The museum offers a range of characters from historical and political figures to pop-culture icons. Some of the displays even feature scenarios designed around the figures to reflect their contextual significance.
We really enjoyed the museum. Small and quaint but greatly executed
Leo Cunha — Google review
This wax museum was ok but very small and with terrible lighting for photos. The whole experience could be better, although the actual wax celebrities are very realistic, almost scarily so! It’s pretty expensive for what it is, although the student discount is good.

Casa de Santos Dumont, once the residence of Alberto Santos-Dumont, a renowned Brazilian aviator and inventor, has now been converted into a museum dedicated to preserving his pioneering work in aviation. This heritage museum showcases his significant contributions to the field and serves as a testament to his historical significance. The house, which was specifically designed by Dumont himself, provides visitors with an immersive experience by featuring replicas of his inventions and exhibits that highlight his life and achievements.
Beautiful place with beautiful history!
Brandon Hainline — Google review
Rather disappointing, considering the recognized importance of the man.
There is a lot of material in archives that document his achievements.
There is precious little that found its way into this museum.
One leaves hungry for what could have been shown.
Eric Decoster — Google review
Historic place which deserves a visit in order to get better acquainted with Alberto Santos Dumont and his inventions and some details about him.
Bruno Freitas — Google review
Nice quick historical visit. Very unique and true story, the first registered flight without wind help or catapult. The real inventor of the first airplane!

Unfortunately, not even half the information in the exhibition are translated into English. Also we didn’t find any film like it’s suggested in other comments. All in all, I’d say that it’s not really worth it if you don’t understand Portuguese very well. Which would be okay, but since the prices and basic information at the entrance are written in English, you’d expect otherwise. House is cute and if you’d like to know how it looks from the inside, it may be worth a visit. If you (again from an English speaking perspective) want to learn about Santos Dumont, you might be better off reading Wikipedia.

I went on his birthday and it was very busy, however it was great to learn more about the type of person he was and his lovely house.

The House of Santos Dumont is a great place to visit. I got surprised when I saw how simple he lived behind the big intelligence he had. The history of this great person brings pride of such human and the benefits he brought to the humandade.
Fabio Mac — Google review
Beautiful site with a rich history and gorgeous scale replicas of Santos' creations, and the original house designed by Santos Dumont himself. The entrance fee is decent, and they offer a video (with English subtitles) that tells the true story of Mr. Dumont. This is a must-visit site for fans of aviation history. Keep in mind the stairs are steep (which is part of the original history of the house), but there is an elevator available for people who have difficulty.
Jacob Carewick — Google review
Historic place, charges $8 Reais for entry, coming from the US didn't know much about Santos Dumont, interesting aviator scientist

It is a super small museum, it takes you probably 30 Minutes to see everything. It is very interesting if you are a fan of history and specially the history of the planes. The only downside is that the infrastructure there is quite bad. And it is super small, so if you go on a busy day, it will be impossible to go in.

Cathedral in Petropolis. After their exile to and death in Europe, the remains of the last Brazilian emperor Pedro II and his wife were laid to rest here in marble tombs. His surviving daughter and her French husband are also entombed here. Of interest to those interested in 19th century imperial history of Brazil.

Pousada Crystal Palace, a charming bed and breakfast, is situated in a Portuguese Colonial-style residence. It offers understated accommodations with a warm dining area, a garden, and a front veranda. Originally established in 1884 at the behest of the Count d'Eu and Princess Isabelle, this exquisite greenhouse was designed to showcase local flora, fauna, and avian species.
The place was cool, the staff were all very nice and it was a safe place to stay. The breakfast every morning was super delicious and had just about everything you can get for a breakfast. Would definitely return.

Nice and simple stay. It was our second time there and everything ran as smooth as the first visit. The location or perfect for those who want to stay at walking distance from the sightseeing places of Petrópolis. The closest place is Crystal Palace, less than a minute walking. Or you can walk about 7 minutes to the Imperial Museum. The continental breakfast is simple but have everything you may need for a morning of walking. The rooms are simple but cozy. (Translated by Google) Extremely disappointed with this guesthouse that promises everything and delivers nothing. The place is beautiful, it has everything to be perfect but it lacks essential details. In addition to not having parking, I paid for a room with a view and air conditioning, when I got there the air conditioning didn't work. After checking more than 5 rooms I decided to stay in one that was not clean. I waited for more than an hour for the room to be ready. Then the room key didn't work, it wouldn't lock. I went out at night and when I returned there was no control over the air or the TV in the room anymore. I had to wait another hour for the doorman to resolve it (this was at 3 am). I bought a room with a double bed, they put two beds of different density together, we slept very poorly. Breakfast is very poor and they do not provide shampoo and conditioner. It's not worth the price. The staff are polite but the quality of the service makes us not want to come back. A feather. I do not recommend.

Located in the Montanhas de Teresopolis Municipal Park, it spans approximately 650m to reach the summit. The pathway is well-maintained and provides a pleasant experience. Access to this trail can be obtained through two routes, with one being recently opened in 2020. Both paths offer breathtaking views of the Atlantic Forest.

The stunning church named after Tiradentes' patron saint, Igreja de Santo Antonio, is a remarkable work of Aleijadinho and one of his final designs. The interior is resplendent with Old Testament allusions and features notable objects like the polychrome organ brought from Portugal in 1798 by donkey and the seven golden phoenixes that suspend candleholders with braided chains. The sundial at the entrance dates back to 1785.

(Translated by Google) It's a small museum that was built where an old prison was, you can see a space where there was a solitary confinement (you can't see it very well, because the glass is a little foggy). Now the museum itself is for images of Mary's mother, so it ends up being very specific. I think it's worth a visit, as they are old pieces and it's cool as a historical record, but if you're not that interested in the topic, it's not that fun.

There is an elevator and stairs to access the floor where the works are located. It's a very clean space! With bathroom and storage. You can't enter with bags or bags, but the storage area is organized and you keep your key. Entrance costs 10 reais and students and teachers pay 5 reais, but proof is required. It's a small but very interesting tour. The museum only has 3 small rooms, but they are worth visiting.

Fountain of St. Joseph, also known as Chafariz de Sao Jose, is a historic site built in 1749 that served as a crucial stop for travelers to replenish their canteens and water their animals. Despite its slightly worn appearance, the fountain exudes an air of tranquility with its surrounding greenery, making it an ideal spot for picnics or seeking respite from the heat.
Very cool historic fountain. It was very unusual because it is in someone's front yard. The home located behind the fountain is privately owned. it was a little disappointing to see only two of the three heads of the fountain working at the time we visited. Hopefully the caretaker has plans to restore this historic Monument.

The Church of Saint Francis of Assisi in Ouro Preto is a well-known Roman Catholic church with a lavish interior and Baroque-style design. Constructed in 1768 by the renowned artist Aleijadinho, its elaborate wooden decorations, intricate religious figures and hand-painted murals are considered some of his greatest works. The museum in the back showcases many interesting pieces by Aleijadinho while the main altar's retablo cements his reputation as a sculptor and engraver.
Beautiful church, it’s one of the most visited in the area, so keep that in mind
Christian polanco — Google review
Church with a incredible amount of art work. You can spend hours looking at the ceiling, it’s mesmerizing. The altar is also full very fine craftsmanship. On the back you also have a tiny museum of Aleijadinho’s art work during his life

Very beautiful place. It's a bit out of the way but I highly recommend visiting if you're in the area. We made the 3 hour drive from Viçosa and only stayed for the day, but the six hours on the road were worth seeing such a magnificent and historic town. The church has a stunning mural on the ceiling. I hope to make it back to visit again one day.

If had already visited old Italian churchs, you are going to be amazed at this church. The roof is wonderful and you can see so many beautiful sculptures. At least 2 hours the details.
Marcus Vinicius Camillo de Oliveira — Google review
Visit this church, you will NOT be disappointed.
It is a testament of the powerful craftsmanship of Aleijadinho, the man who sculpted without his hands. He sculpted the altar while not being able to attend mess on this church, being black and black people where not allowed inside churches.
The church also holds the painting of Mestre Ataíde, the painting in the ceiling that is his most well known piece.
This church is a powerful expression of Ouro Preto's and Brazil's faith and artistry.
Lui Chauar — Google review
The most beautiful church in Ouro Preto, the Igreja de São Francisco de Assis, was begun in 1765, and no other contains more works by Aleijadinho. The magnificent exterior soapstone panels are his, as is virtually all the virtuoso carving, in both wood and stone, inside; Aleijadinho also designed the church and supervised its construction. In 1801 the church commissioners contracted the best painter of the barroco mineiro, Manuel da Costa Ataíde, to decorate the ceilings. It took him nine years, using natural dyes made from plant juices and powdered iron ore, and his work has stood the test of time far better than other church paintings of the period. The squirming mass of cherubs and saints is framed within a cunning trompe l’oeil effect, which extends the real Baroque pillars on the sides of the nave into painted ones on the ceiling, making it seem like an open-air canopy through which you can glimpse clouds. There are also painted azulejos in the apse that look remarkably like the real thing.

The Museu da Inconfidência is a well-preserved former jail in Ouro Preto that serves as a museum dedicated to the casualties of a failed rebellion against Portugal in 1789. The building showcases excellent examples of civil colonial architecture, with pale stone walls and arched windows set against a painted white facade. This historical museum pays tribute to those who lost their lives during the unsuccessful revolution that fought for independence from Portugal.
Highly recommend. Compelling story-telling about early colonial and revolution history. Signs have English translations which are a bit archaic, and hard to understand, but give a basic story.

The staff was super friendly and worked hard to accommodate the disability on one of the people in our party.

Audio guides weren't available, which probably made it a lot less enjoyable. Translations are in Portuguese and English, but the English doesn't provide much context and it's difficult to follow the history of the conspiracy or the story of the Vila Rica. Staff were very helpful, however, and lots of security. No photos allowed!

This place holds some of the most important documents of the Brazilian history.
It always keeps the bodies of the first men to think about an independent Brasil: there's a small Pantheon inside the museum.
It's important to understand that the episode remembered by this museum happened pretty much in line with the US independence and the french revolution and the industrial revolution. Minas Gerais was already economically and politically linked to the world by 1750+.

The Basilica Nossa Senhora do Pilar is a revered Catholic church located in the historical center of Ouro Preto. Constructed in the late 17th century, the church underwent reconstruction in 1731 to give it a more durable structure, and is now regarded as one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in the region. Inside, visitors can marvel at hundreds of kilos of gold and silver decorations, alongside hand-carved religious artifacts.

E a comida?

Sehr freundliches Personal.

Located in "another country" within Minas Gerais Alfa Ville - Lagoa dos Ingleses is an indescribable and beautiful place.
Good restaurants, spectacular houses and mansions are well worth a visit.
But beware, the Lagoa dos Ingleses is dangerous even for excellent swimmers and drownings have already occurred there.
When you go to Alfa Ville, take along stylish sports and winter clothes.
