The original parish is colonial but with the passage of time it began to have changes in its architecture, the current church must be about 60 years old, it is a fairly large and imposing church located north of the town's main park.

The beautiful Iglesia de San Francisco, a remarkable church in Popayan with a rich historical background, showcases the influence of the colonial era. Despite needing restoration and additional attention, it possesses an impressive religious collection. Surrounding the church are food trucks where one can enjoy delicious meals while spending quality time with friends. Overall, this extraordinary place is an ideal spot to appreciate history and savor a quick bite.

The Guillermo Valencia Theater is an exquisite venue with a stunning aesthetic. Its charm lies in its traditional and vintage architecture, which serves as an ideal setting for various cultural shows. While visitors can enter and request access, the lack of illumination may hinder their experience. To fully appreciate the beauty of this theater, it is highly recommended to reserve tickets for a concert or other artistic performances.

I was given a leaflet, and no further explanation, not very helpful when everything is in Spanish. In other places, the attendants tried to explain at least a little bit in a Spanish I can understand. There was also a question of why I had to pay 8000 pesos when the ticket said 4000. I was told this is a student ticket only. But there was no ticket for 8000 and I was not issued a receipt. In other places when they charged me double they gave me two tickets. I assume that it is all correct but it felt weird. The exhibit is the usual collection of religious art that can be soon all over this part of the world.

This place in particular is the fine example of colonial architecture through time and also a piece of History we want to share with tourists. The whole purpose of building this scenery from colonial times was to show Outsiders how proud We Are of keeping these Traditions and taking good care of them. We must remember that it Is a city that has been destroyed 4 times by 4 big earthquakes, every disaster takes its toll over the city taking away most of its cherish monuments. Anyway it is an attempt to preserve the memory of those buildings and of course, to Talk about the traditions and The people who lived un them.

A beautiful and quiet place to visit, it's a little model of Popayan with the main landmarks but in tiny scale. Also you can find typical food and handycraft stands and an office of tourism if you need information. Totally recommended.
Jonh Jairo Dueñas Muñoz — Google review
The place gives a great experience of the colonial city as a miniature version. Some nice shops to buy souvenirs. However the food wasn't up to scratch. One would expect the city to invest more to a tourist attraction such as this. The Tamales de Pipián were still super delicious although we almost double charged, potentially by mistake. It's probably just a one time visit location. There are a few shops where you can buy some decent souvenirs but that's about it.
Parque Arqueológico Nacional de Tierradentro is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Cauca, Colombia, showcasing pre-Columbian underground tombs adorned with paintings and carvings. This ancient site, distinct from San Agustin, offers visitors a glimpse into a civilization that existed around 1400 years ago. Accessible from Popayan by public transport, the journey takes about three hours on rough roads.
The park is amazing !!!!! You need to be ready to walk up the hill for 2000m but the pass is for 2 days .

What an amazing yet strenuous hike to see some very cool ancient sites. This is probably the coolest thing I will do in Colombia and the town and people were so helpful and kind. I hope more people visit!
Maddi Quamme — Google review
Parque Tierradentro is an exceptional place, a must visit if you're in this part of Colombia. Basically, these are subterranean burial sites appr. 1400 year old. It's possible to visit on your own, with public transport, below I'll explain how.
From Popayan, there are several buses daily (schedule attached). The trip costs 40k one way. Takes about 3 hours. The road is terrible, I wouldn't recommend coming by car. On the bus try to take front seats, you'll be jumping and shaking a lot. The bus won't take you all the way to the park, but will leave you at "El Crucero" (search on Google maps). From there it's a 1km+ walk to the park entrance. There is also bus connection with La Plata if you're coming from Tatacoa.
For foreigners, the cost of the entry is 50k. Factor in a night to spend in San Andres, because the last bus is at 4pm, and the sites close at 4pm too, it's impossible to visit everything by then. I visited on Tuesday, and was the only person at each site. The park is very well organized and clearly marked.
Next to the entrance, there is a museum, worth a 15-20 min stop. All the sites are accessed through hiking trails, with beautiful views, some of them - especially Aguacate - quite steep, so keep that in mind. On the first day you can easily visit Segovia, El Duende and El Tablón, and then arrive to San Andres where you'll stay overnight. There is a cheap (30k) hospedaje next to the church. All in all, it will take you 3-4 hours.
The following day you can hike to San Andres site (15 min) and Aguacate (1h 10 min), and then make your way down to take a bus (1 h). I went down towards Inza (gasolinera el Hato) instead of returning to the museum to save myself some minutes of shaking in the bus. I was pretty exhausted by the time I was down.
You'll need to bring water and maybe some snacks, as in the sun the hikes can be pretty demanding. But overall, the combination of the incredible views of the surrounding mountains, pleasant hikes and ancient archeological sites make it a really special place to visit.
Viktoryia Pilinko — Google review
Why?? how?? who?? so many questions about this place and not many answers just theories and that's what makes it even more interesting.
So simple yet amusing, that was tierradentro national park for me it was a magical place maybe cause I prefer to visit a park over the "biggest badest" shopping mall.
Now when you visit this park go with an open mind cause it might become very repetitive, and keep in mind that there's different areas that you need to hike to. The hike to the Alto the aguacate Is pretty steep and on the hard side if you start at the museum, there no obvious stairs or path in the beginning, after you cross the bridge just go up, no left or right but up, once on top you'll be rewarded with amazing 360 views of the whole area, and don't forget to bring lots of water and snacks.
Carlos Salamanca — Google review
Nice, intersting place, we recomending to take local taxi (after ticket office) and start from top of hill. Perfect walking trip.
Audrius 1000 — Google review
Incredible site to visit and completely worth the trek to get here. If you just want to do the most noteworthy parts, it's doable as a daytrip from Popayan. Take one of the earliest (6:30am or 7:30am) buses towards Inza, and shortly after you'll arrive at El Crucero, taking upwards of 4 hours because of how awful the roads are. It's about a 20 minute walk to the entrance. From there, you can complete Segovia and Duende in about 2-2.5 hours, then walk towards El Tablon. Watch carefully for the sign since it faces the opposite direction than the direction you're headed. Head back down towards the entrance to view the museum. Should leave you plenty of time to walk or take a collective (if one passes by) to El Crucero or Inza, where you can wait for the bus back to Poayan. The last two both arrive around 4pm at El Crucero but sometimes slightly earlier (happened to me). Hope this helps somebody as it was difficult to find any info online

Puracé, an active volcano standing at 4,646 meters in Puracé National Natural Park, offers guided hikes with breathtaking views nearby Popayan. The journey to the summit requires an 8-hour hike through private properties and a guide is necessary as it is mandatory for visitors to register at the trail head's office. Hot breakfast is available from the office before beginning the trek. This challenging adventure is suitable for those who seek thrilling experiences and enjoy exploring natural wonders.
Awesome place. Recently, the sulphur mine was closed for keeping this place in good conditions for more time. The local guides from the Purace tribu offer the tour guide for 40000 COP without intermediaries. This place can be reached walking from the basement located in 4200 meters over the sea level. The top is hours long walking from the basement. The crater is in 4599 meters over the sea level. The top has an amazing view. This place is really recommended.

Nice, but the community controlling it in May 2018 didn't want to provide us a guide for going up (after 2h hitchhiking to get to the entrance). We then went by ourselves and got "arrested" on the way back. They didn't let us leave until we paid a "fine". As of today, I still don't know if it was a robbery, since the Tourism Office in Popayán told us that entrance to the site was free for everyone.

From there there is a path to the right, you have to go down and go up again until you reach a small township, before entering the township you turn right and keep going up for about 5 minutes. From where the cars are parked to the waterfall there is a 30 minute walk.
The good thing is that all the way there are signs to get to the waterfall, it is not possible for you to get lost.

A shortish flat trail leads down to the river where it narrows to about 2 meters wide at the granite rocks. Area by the water is uneven rocks so those with mobility issues may not be able to get close to the narrows.
A popular spot for locals just relaxing.
Swimming is definitely out as the currents are very strong and the water is very deep and there are what look to possibly be downdrafts. Very dangerous.

The site where you have the statues is called “El Purutal”. La “Pelota” hasn’t got any statues. La “Pelota” is the hill in front of the entrance, when you enter , it is the hill behind you. You can walk up the hill and there is a viewpoint but there are no statues there.

Quite a highlight. The panorama is beautiful. The road to get here is quite in a bad state but ok for a mountain bike or a gravel bike. It is also a nice stroll from San Agustin. There is a splendid view to The Valley and the Rio Magdalena with two small waterfalls on the opposite mountain side.

La Chaquira was one of the stops on my horseback riding tour through San Agustin, and it turned out to be my favorite. The history is interesting but the views here were absolutely breathtaking (mountains, the river, waterfalls, etc.). Some people said that it was a dangerous area but I didn't have any issues while I was there with my local guide.
I loved it so much that I even had to list it as one of the reasons San Agustin is worth visiting on my San Agustin blog post.
Fernweh Foreigner — Google review
Entering from the main road after visiting El Tablón. You walk about 25/30min along dirt farm roads. La Chaquira is located at the end of the road. There is a Resteraunt with light snacks and refreshments. A stone carving craftsman and a girl making beautiful thread bracelets.
There are statues all over the property hidden in bushes and long grass.
It’s also recommended you walk down an extensive staircase to see the River and canyon. There are 2 viewpoint platforms. It’s a nice option to see the statues and some beautiful countryside for free. (Only pay $1200 for the bus or $2000 for the mototaxi from centre San Agustin.

A great view on the deep valley and the waterfall and, if you turn around, also on the figures (I could only find discover 2, not third). But the way is long and steep. Keep it in your mind before you go down!
Parking on a farm after a small and steep path, a small parking fee instead a intrance fee. After your way back you will really enjoy a cool drink on the farm's bar - how joyful no plastic, just glass bottles.

Absolutely unique remains of incredibly talented and brave Sculptors people of San Agustín. The landscape is breathtaking. Please take care of that treasure. We saw people jumping of the 4000 yo sculptures to take (ridiculous) selfies, it's horrifying.

This pre-Colombian site with unique burial site statues will give you a sense of history you’d never get anywhere in Colombia.
You can get here by a cab, a tuktuk or renting a motorbike in San Agustin.

I suggested to change the name to “Alto de los Ídolos” because the other archeological site is called “Alto de las Piedras” and if you look it up in Google maps it comes out with its Spanish name. But alto de los idol is did not come out…
In any case visiting San Agustin main side you get a ticket / passport valid for two days. The first day I spent visiting the main site and then on the second day I went to “Alto de los Ídolos” and “Alto de las Piedras” by bicycle, which I recommend to get a full view of the beautiful landscapes around the sites.
Don’t miss “Alto de los Ídolos”. It is beautiful. Historically (or prehistorically) were two hills that have been united through a gene slope. Lots of beautiful figures and a nice panorama 😀

AMAZING historical site. A must see in my book. And the park is very well set out and educational. Good for kids, prams and older people.
Parque Arqueológico De San Agustin is a UNESCO-listed archaeological site located near the town of San Andres de Pisimbala. The park covers 78 hectares and features four tomb sites, pre-Columbian sculptures, and monuments. A passport ticket valid for two consecutive days allows visitors access to all sites via a 14km walk. The park contains over 130 statues with human or animal features found in situ or collected from other areas.
Just an incredible place full of tombs and statues set in a mainly jungle setting that requires quite a bit of hiking to see everything but the rewards are rich indeed.
Like may people I suspect, I only knew about this place vaguely but was hugely impressed on my visit.
The numerous statues are in fantastic shape considering the age of them, probably because they were buried for so long.
I recommend hiring one of the older local guides as they can relate so much history and point out so many features you would most likely miss were you to go on your own. Allow 3 to 4 hours to visit to get the most out of the park. Entrance fees are well worth it and also cover additional sites that are also worth visiting but you'll likely need to do those on a tour if you don't have your own car.

Agencia de viajes San Agustin Huila Magdalena Rafting offers an exhilarating experience of rafting down the Magdalena River. The tour takes you through 24 rapids between two bridges, providing a thrilling adventure while surrounded by magnificent landscapes. The professional guides ensure safety and provide an adrenaline-pumping experience, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced rafters. The agency's excellent logistics and top-notch equipment contribute to a seamless and enjoyable outing.
We went for a 4 day trek with Julian from Magdalena Rafting, up to Laguna Magdalena (about 3 800m) and back to San Augustin in the month of April, and it was an absolutely unique and incredible experience. We got a lot of rain on the 2nd and also on the 3rd day, which made the narrow pathways very slippery and there were foggy times when we had to wonder if it actually was worth trekking up such steep slopes with sharp stones, wading through mud and water in rubber boots...but it was worth every second of it!! We never saw the Laguna Magdalena, but Julian took me to another mountain lake, Laguna Cusiako, which was phenomenal, and the trek in general takes you through such a unique and incredible landscape that never again will you live through something like it. The sleeping and eating arrangements are very simple and humble, but Julian does everything he can to make you have the best time possible, including catering very nicely to a vegetarian diet, and the people who welcome you along the way into their homes are warm and friendly and make up for the cold and damp environment. There are long distances to walk, steep slopes, high altitude, and tricky descents, but if you are fit, ready to trek in rubber boots and rain gear, and if you want a challenge, don't hesitate a single second, it is an unforgettable experienc, just don't forget to hire amazing Cleopatra the horse to carry your bags! Thank you Julian!

(Translated by Google) The agency offers rafting and treks. We did the 4 day one to climb to the Magdalena lagoon. An unforgettable experience ! The guide Julian is experienced, attentive, helpful. Really perfect. Homestay accommodation is basic but the welcome is excellent. An authentic dive into Andean country life. The trek itself is magnificent. However, be careful, it is only suitable for experienced hikers, especially for mountain walking. On the 2nd day, we climbed 1400 meters in 6 hours on difficult paths followed by 2 hours of descent. Walking poles are useful... We reach almost 4000 meters, which exposes us to altitude sickness. I highly recommend taking a horse to carry the bags. Choosing the three-day trek option is even more difficult. You have to swallow the 1400 meters of positive altitude difference then come back down in the same day, or around 11 hours of walking. Also note that the lagoon can be in the clouds when you arrive at the top! But Julian also organizes much easier treks, which are suitable for families. Go there with your eyes closed. Julian will know how to adapt the walk to your needs

Special shout out to Fabio, super competent and full of good vibes ;) go there with your eyes closed...they will be wide open on the Rio Magdalena anyway!

Barrio Orquídeas, Cra. 17 #5-18, San Agustín, Huila, Colombia
Very beautiful church with interiors in wood and a pretty decoration in similars colors of gold.
A high roof and some more decoration on wood makes a cool environment for a good 6 hour praying.
At the end of the church you can see some beautiful chairs with a beautiful decoration of Don Quijote and Sancho Panza, and other Spaniards. Maybe decorations of the 1800s.
To end, a beautiful outside decoration of antique bricks.

The door is carved and inside you can see different beautiful works of wood carving, in fact it is worth visiting to admire the wonderfully carved pulpit! Next to the Church you can see the beautiful remodeling that the city's priest did to the priest's house, following the colonial line with beautiful and expensive wood finishes!
