There are two playgrounds beside each other in the woods. A general playground and an athletic playground. The latter - the athletic playground - was done up late 2018. They removed all the old pieces and put in brand new pieces over a year. Its completed now. The general playground is old but functional and a big hit with kids.

Nice place for the kids, but could use a lot of refurbishment...especially the animal areas. Really run-down, weedy in some places. Admission is very reasonable, and the setting is nice. Nearest station would be Saiyama-shi, on the Seibu Shinjuku Line...from there, you should take a bus. Didn't see any place to eat, unless you bring a lunch. Parking available, if you come by car, bike, etc.

Ashikaga School, notable for its ancient architecture and scenic surroundings, is recognized as Japan's oldest educational institution. The site not only houses temples but also shops, making it a popular destination for tourists. Visitors can partake in a Kanji test or take in the picturesque scenery to learn about Japan's rich history. It is believed to have been constructed during the Nara era, Heian era or Kamakura era; however, it was first officially recorded during the Muromachi era.
The oldest school in Japan. It was said that it was built in Nara era, Heian era, or Kamakura era. But first officially it was recorded in 1439 in Muromachi era.

I’ve got to admit that this buildings site, which had been the nationally highest educational institution in Japanese academia such as Confucian ethics and Kokugaku from medieval for a long time, is not that entertaining or many things fun to watch, but is pretty elegant and very educational sightseeing spot you should visit at least once.
I admire the local people who have cherished and been making great efforts to preserve not only solemn buildings and beautiful trees, but also the spirit and significance of the school’s existence.
I humbly sense that that is still making this place well worth visiting.

Great little museum! Not much in English, however if you know a bit of Japanese and can follow through context, I suggest the tour if it’s available! It’s a really cool place about one of the first schools in Japan that wasn’t based off of the European education model. Very interesting info

This place is the oldest school in Japan. The buildings are well maintained and are in good condition. You can explore inside, role play as a scholar and test your knowledge with Japanese characters by filling out the free test sheets provided in the classroom.

The first school in Japan. Not too far from Tokyo. Beautiful scenery and informative features in English to understand some parts of Japan's history.

An ancient school that has been changed into a museum. Worth the ¥420 for a ticket. The garden is quite a nice view. You also get to go inside the buildings and most of the signs have an English translation. Sadly the library doesn't come with English translations for the signs and it's not allowed to use a smartphone inside to translate them yourself.

This historical landmark provides a sense of Japanese education back in the day. A combination of religious & moral studies with writing skills was taught and shaped the minds of young Japanese children. A remarkable site to behold.

Incredible and silly. Traveling long distance to see Japanese heritage where no credit card from tourist is accepted. Can’t enter. Shame on you. This is unacceptable way of treating visitors !!!
Piotr Paulo — Google review
The place has an appearance which invites visitors to sit down and study. But there are also fun things like the "Yuza-no-ki". For those who are familiar with the language, you can make a school kanji test.

Was trying to find the resident cat Hacchan but it was nowhere to be seen. It’s a little hard to appreciate the place without a guide- there’s not enough English signage/explanations within. Still, you can walk around and appreciate the architecture and artifacts. I’m usually very interested and can spend a long time at museums but I was pretty much done with this place in 30 mins.

It was amazing to visit Japan’s first school. We arrived before closing, so we were the only ones there. There was also a sighting of a fat cat named Hacchan. 🤍
Nestled approximately 74 kilometers north of Tokyo, Ashikaga Flower Park is a renowned 23-acre floral paradise that first opened its doors in 1968. The park boasts an impressive collection of seasonal thematic displays, including the famous 150-year-old wisteria tree designated as a national monument.
Definitely a must visit in the winter time if in the area. Great for dates or even a trip with a group of friends.
First off, the entry fee was super cheap given how huge the park is. We got there thinking we'd be done in an hour or two to find out that we didn't have enough time to see the entire park.
Second, the lights are stunning. I thought it was really clever how they replaced the original wisterias with light versions and loved how they moved the lights to different sequences in a TeamLab like fashion. There were so many lights that were all different throughout the park that made us want to stay and stare for a long time because of how dynamic they were.
Finally, the food was good! They had many options and had a beef stew that they call their specialty.
Will definitely come by every time I'm in this area now

I wish I could give more than 5 ⭐️ to this amazingly beautiful and unique place, which is truly a depiction of a garden from the heavens on earth. You must have never seen such a variety of flowers in bulk - overloaded & flowing, at a single venue. Very aesthetically designed and managed flower park in Tochigi, less than 2 hours drive from Tokyo (also having a train access), Ashikaga is very rightly placed on the list of dream destinations. Ticket price varied between ¥1-2k depending on the season of flowers. You can easily spend the whole day and evening here. There are a lot of options to just sit, relax and watch the amazing beauty of nature translates through flowers, flowers & flowers.

I came to this flower park on April 2023, when the most popular Wisteria flower in this park starts blooming. I was very lucky I visited this park when it was sunny day, not raining at all (it was rainy season). There is a lot of different types flower, you can enjoy seeing it while walking or sitting on the bench.
Apparently there is a souvenir shop that selling flowers too, they are available in a little pot or even seed if you want to plant it yourself.
There is also a restaurant that is selling a limited time Wisteria themed ice cream, they said it's a combination of vanilla and Wisteria flower.

Place worth visit. Winter illumination was simply superb. Families traveling with kids, please take care. Not many toilets are available on premises. Long queues and waiting lines for Toilets. Crowd, crowd everywhere. Showpieces were awesome, so many designs and unique displays.

Awesome.. Been there to watch illumination and it was truly phenomenal. Multiple light shows spread across the park. Two type of entries ; day entry and evening entry. Evening entry included illumination show, although we reached one hour before the evening entry starts, the kind lady on the counter suggested to wait and get evening entry ticket, even though we had trouble understanding language and it was worth every penny.

An absolute must visit for anyone who likes flowers. This is probably one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been to - I’ve been twice during wisteria season and I can’t give a high enough rating. We spent hours here, especially browsing the plant shop while waiting for the sun to set to see the illuminations at night. The wisteria ice cream is delicious and the selection of flowers besides just wisteria was a nice touch.
Emily — Google review
One of the best park. This is my second time visiting. Sadly we can’t catch the full bloom of wisteria. Definitely will come again in different season to check out its beauty in different times. Pictures taken on 8 April 2023. Admission price is 1000 yen today. For your planning reference.

Lovely little spot to visit for half a day, very pretty flowers around here, which probably are best seen in Spring. But even in summer it is worth visiting.
On-site food and shops are available.
The wisteria flavoured soft serve ice cream is fantastic !
A couple of lovely souvenir and gift shops and a few games for kids make it a well rounded package.
Entry is inly 500¥, well worth it.

We went here to see the nice illumination that Ashikaga Flower Park had put this Autumn season. It was so amazing. They have different features of lights all over the park like castles, pyramids, flower lights and many other Christmas decors. The entrance fee is only ¥1300 per head. We had so much fun capturing photos here
Ardith Telewik — Google review
Nice park, not just beautiful flowers but delicious food, local snacks and ice cream. I had a wonderful day with friends. A little bit far from Tokyo, but it is worth a long-time travel during the flower period.

Amazing flower park, the lights at night make it even more worth to go to this place.
I was staying in tokyo and took me about 2 hours to get here but it was a great idea and I do not regret the time I spent to get to Ashikaga Flower Park.
The entry was 1,200 yen which is basically about 2 beers so it is definately a decent price for the experience.
There are many shops and restaurants to eat there.
I recommend going near to sunset so you can get some nice photos of plans when there is a bit of light and you can stay a couple more hours to see the lights at night time.
Sergio Portillo — Google review
BEAUTIFUL!! This festival was extremely tidy and cared for- not to mention how amazing it smelled while strolling through. The ice cream was delicious, I had a hard time choosing between that and the iced drink! They also had other snacks available for purchase with several seating areas to catch a break and fuel up. There was plenty of space and scenes to walk through that each felt magical. The Wisteria trees themselves were very impressive creating multiple canopies around the flower park.
It was pretty busy, but enough to still enjoy it.
Alayna Johnston — Google review
What an amazing experience! One of my favorite in Japan so far. I agree with all the other reviews calling this place magical. We visited in late April, which was good because this year the wisteria bloomed earlier than ever in the park's history. I wish we had more than 2 hours to fully enjoy the illumination and flowers. The smell was quite strong. Though I enjoyed it, people with allergies might be affected.
We appreciated the care that went into the entire garden. Not just the "main" flowers, but all the plants and flowers surrounding them. Clearly a lot of work goes into creating a beautiful experience. We tried to balance taking photos and just enjoying with our eyes. The different colors, types, and size of the wisteria was quite impressive.
Obviously it will be very crowded during peak season, so I recommend going in at opening or staying until closing if you want to get shots with less people in them. They have at least one spot where you can line up to have your photo taken by a photographer with a nice camera and they will also take a photo on one device you give them (phone, camera, GoPro, etc.). When we visited, it was just behind the restaurant/café in the middle of the park. If you like their photo, you can purchase it in a commemorative frame/stand, but it unfortunately does not include the data for the photo like some other parks do.
The price varies depending on bloom status, so since we visited during full bloom the price was 1900 yen per person for the night ticket. The night and day tickets are separate. I believe the peak day price is about 2100 yen. I'm sure both are beautiful, but I really enjoyed seeing them illuminated. During the wisteria season, there are extra parking lots available, just sometimes with more walking involved but I can't imagine them running out of parking spaces.
Rachel Boatwright — Google review
Beautiful park and lighting. We went at night time in November 2023 and they started displaying xmas decoration. This park also offered lighting show, food and beverages food court, cafes, small snack stalls and gift shops.
We had to walk 10-15 mins from station but it was worth it.

I went there jn October. But spring and Christmas season is better to visit so can see wisteria flowers and Christmas light decorations. There are varieties of flowers throughout the year. For me it’s pricey but if you love flowers it worth visiting there.

No long queue at entrance since we reached at 19:30 on Sunday.
Some food stalls are arranged outside the west gate. There are also coffee shop, souvenir shop inside the park.

Beautiful display of illuminations integrating with existing autumn plants. The venue was well organised. Parking is free and entry ticket is obtainable at two entrances - main front and west gates.
Trinh Huynh — Google review
Went for the night time light show. Absolutely gorgeous. As the roses were still blooming the garden is filled with a sweet aroma. There shops and food vendors open at nights and an overall festival feel.
Dan — Google review
The park luminates at night with a lot of light shows. Even if there was no natural wisteria when I went during October there were tons of things that made it look similar and the place was interesting overall. I do not recommend going there if you are a solo like me since it was very sad to see only couples there uwu. Still it was worth it for 1300 yen.

They had many instagrammable photo areas and for some reason another photo theme was Winnie the Pooh and they had many areas set up for photos.
As with all premium outlets in Japan it's nothing compared to prices of outlets in North America. It's a lot smaller than the outlet in Gotemba or Karuizawa... But it's much more accessible because it's not too big and it's far less crowded which makes it all more pleasant.
I think outlet malls are a little bit cheaper this year maybe due to Corona and sluggish moving inventory. Most shops had additional 20 to 30% on top of the already reduced prices.
On a hot summer day it's really not recommended because there's not much refuge from the humidity and heat. It's a very dog friendly place and many owners had brought their pets.
The cosmetics shop was really crowded! Lots of discounted Clinique items. MAC eyeshadows that go for over 3000yen retail outside were selling for about 1000yen. A must stop for cosmetics-lovers.

Ryuzu Falls is a popular destination in Oku-Nikko, known for its stunning cascades and natural beauty. It's accessible via short hiking trails, making it an ideal spot for beginner hikers. The falls are part of a picturesque three-hour trail that passes through various natural landmarks, offering plenty of scenic views along the way. The area around the falls is split into two, resembling the head of a dragon, which gives Ryuzu its name.
One of the best waterfalls I have seen in Nikko, a must visit place during autumn 🍂, there are steps to climb up to view the awesome Ryuzu falls. It’s quite interior but there are buses available from lake Chuzenji, please be careful on the bus timings, if you miss the bus only option is to walk across the beautiful Chuzenji lake and reach the bus stop.

A small waterfall. You can view it from near the gallery outside the giftshop. Not super spectacular, but if you happen to pass by, good to stop by here for a little shopping or food. I visited during late autumn where most of the colorful leaves had fallen. Will be much nicer during the peak of autumn.

Less impressive compared to Kegon falls, but quite beautiful nevertheless! If you go on local buses, stop at 38 (instead of 37), and go downwards, instead of all the way up and then down. Well-located inside the forest, quite scenic & aome great views!

This waterfalls is near Nikko, in Japan. We took a bus from Nikko Station. Needless to say that the bus and train connections are extremely convenient in Japan. It was a very scenic drive through forest area next to a lake in many parts.
It was a rainy day, so we couldn't explore much. The bus stop was very close to the waterfalls.
We walked a bit from the bus stop to reach the falls, the twin falls looked great. The trees around had partly fall colors which made it very beautiful. There was a gift shop and a small restaurant.
There was a hiking trail to the top. But we couldn't do it because of rain.
On the way back to the station, we stopped at a famous temple and took a few pictures of an ancient bridge - Shinkiyo bridge over a gorgeous river and with the back drop of mountains.
The whole of Nikko area was very scenic with rivers, lakes, waterfalls, mountains and forests.

Recommended place to stop by and take time here. There is a cafe where you can just sit, sipping coffee, and enjoying a close up view of the falls. Or you can walk a bit further to behind the fall, there is a park for relaxation where you can also see panoramic view of Chuzenji lake. I went there a few week late from the peak of autumn period, there is no autumn leave left. But the falls gave me another feeling of winter which is also good.

This falls is so amazing. It has a very nice view most especially during autumn season. It is a long falls that will take some 250 staiway steps going at the peak of it. I love the sound of the waterfalls combined with the cold breeze of Fall season. So many tourists are coming around to take pictures and videos here. I love this place so much

This is a really beautiful area. The main shop and parking area at the bottom offers the 2 split waterfalls. Weekends during autumn are very busy and parking is hectic but free. If you enjoy a little walk (25 minutes) I suggest you park higher up the road near a bridge. It’s also free parking and you can enjoy the beauty winding river and other waterfalls as you walk down the path towards the base. It’s paved with stairs and lovely foliage on both sides. You will be surrounded by tourists and photographers. Definitely worth visiting as the views are breathtaking.

Beautiful falls! About 6 or 7 flights of stairs to get to the stop.
The view at the bottom is just as good.

Just a short walk from the car park. The viewing platform is part of the tea house. Just look out for the signage. It means dragon head in Japanese and you can sort of imagine the rocks between the falls as the dragon head and the falls themselves are the breath from the dragon’s nostrils?

It's a perfect place where you can unwind and connect with nature. Whether you're a nature enthusiast or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, Ryuzu Falls offers a rejuvenating experience. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and bask in the beauty of the natural world.

Nice, easy walk with wide stairs to go along the fall. The Autumn fall color is extraordinary beautiful. The environment is clean but not overcrowded. Parking is an issue but there's always to find a spot.
Senjogahara is a picturesque hiking destination with elevated trails that provide stunning views of the surrounding valley and mountains. The Nature Research Trail, spanning 400 hectares, offers a 2-hour hike through the wetland, showcasing Japanese water iris, lotus, spiraea, and cottongrass. In winter, the frozen wetlands create a beautiful backdrop for stargazing.
The most serene and beautiful nature walking trails I've been to. Have been here twice and will return for more. The wooden planks are comfortable to walk on with normal shoes even when we came in early December and there was light snow fall.

One of the best hike I have ever done in Japan. Amazing hike throughout spring-late summer times. From Nikko Station, take the bus to Akanuma Bus Stop (will take you around 50min), and the hiking trail starts right there. The destination is the small town of Yumoto on the other side of Yuno lake (where the bus also departures). The hike is well marked and preserved, and there are not many up and downs (easy level), except from few areas near the lake.
There are some nice local shops to rest and taste local delicacy, like fish and rice balls. The destination of Yumoto is a natural hot springs onsen town. The water is natural and can smell sulfuric (you can actually smell it from the lake), but they say it has great minerals for your skin. This is the place where bloody battles took place during the japanese feudal era, and the locals say you can see a ghost during night time, so be alert! Ideally you want to stay over in a accomodation in Yumoto town, or at the camping site. Also make sure to bring water and snacks since there are not many shops.
How to get there: Express Train from Asakusa Station (1hr+) - Bus from Nikko Station (50min) - get off at Akanuma Bus stop - Hike 2-3 hrs - Yumoto town (bus back to Nikko Station or stay over to explore the temples in Nikko).

good hike! you can choose the course but you should think of minimum 2 hours to enjoy the scene. The road is rather flat so there is no need to get too many equipments but still it is better to bring some water and snacks. Decent experience

One of the most beautiful places ive ever been i dont even know where to start. There are plenty of different trails you can take, varying in difficulty, but the main boardwalk trail through the marsh really cant be beat. Its expensive to get here from nikko main station by bus but if you like nature its absolutly worth it. Serene and peaceful, the only sounds are birds and water and its a nice break from the busyness of tokyo and the other major cities. The air is fresh and clean and the other people on the trails are kind. Unfortunatly i had to leave at 5 to catch the last train back to tokyo, so if you like nature, allocate as much time as possible here u wont regret it.

This place would be incredible if you happened to be here during the right season. Admittedly the foliage was lacking any sort of colour (which I had expected) when I visited, but the hike itself was serene nevertheless. The boardwalk is well maintained and mostly flat, although the northern end of the trail has a few steps in various areas. Several points of interest along the way and constant views of the surrounding mountains. From my experience, starting at Ryuzu and finishing at Yudaki is the ideal route as the Yudaki end is more exciting. This also gives you the option to continue to Yumoto Spa, which I do recommend.

I had a wonderful time hiking in Senjogahara, a beautiful marshland in Nikko National Park. The trails were well-maintained and easy to follow, and the scenery was stunning. I saw many kinds of plants and birds, and enjoyed the views of the mountains, falls and the river. The hike was not too strenuous, and I could finish it in about three hours. There were also some rest houses and toilets along the way. The best part was that I could access the trails by public transportation, taking a bus from Tobu Nikko Station to Yumoto Onsen( bus station number 44 or 46). I highly recommend this hike to anyone who loves nature and wants to experience a different side of Nikko.

Senjogahara offers a breathtaking view, and the boardwalk enhances the overall experience. I enjoyed the scenic beauty of the sidewalks and even encountered deer. The place is truly amazing. Lake Chūzenji, discovered in 782, is a scenic destination offering a variety of outdoor activities throughout the year. Situated at over 1,200 meters above sea level, it boasts stunning views and a cool climate. The azure waters are surrounded by thick forests and overlooked by Mount Nantai. Visitors can enjoy hiking, boating, leaf watching in the fall, and winter sports.

Beautiful lake and worth a visit to see this gorgeous sight. Had a nice day around the lake and even went on a paddle boat 1500 Yen for 30 minutes.
However the experience on the boat was quite scary as the cruise sight seeing ships do go around you and generate large waves . So a cautious attitude towards it would be wise to avoid getting splashed by icy cold water or even worse capsize.

Chozenji Lake is a stunning natural attraction in Nikko National Park, where you can enjoy the beauty of the lake and the surrounding mountains. You can also visit the Kegon Falls,or go for hiking from Yunoko lake to Chuzenji.(various bus stations in between)
The lake area has a variety of shops, cafes, and restaurants to suit your taste and budget.
The lake is accessible by bus from Nikko Station, which is about 40 minutes away. The bus fare is 1,150 yen for one way and 2,000 yen for a round trip. You can also buy a discount pass that includes the bus fare and the entrance fee to the Kegon Falls and the Chuzenji Temple. The pass costs 2,600 yen for adults and 1,300 yen for children.
However, be aware that the bus service is not very frequent, especially in the off-season. The bus runs every 30 minutes in the peak season but you may have to wait for a long time or take a taxi if you miss the bus. Also, the lake can get very crowded during the weekends and holidays, especially in the autumn when the leaves change color. You may want to avoid these times if you prefer a quieter and more relaxing experience.
Overall, Chozenji Lake is a wonderful place to visit if you want to see the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Nikko. Just make sure to plan ahead and check the bus schedule and the weather before you go.

I love this lake view in Nikko. This is one of my favorite spots to visit during the Fall season. The Autumn colors have just started and the climate is getting cold already. The town looks so nice and you can see that many tourits are coming here to visit the place. There are many shops all over the place including cafes, restaurants and hotels. You can also have a nice view at the observatory and you can take a short cruise trip around the lake. It is so nice for fishing, camping, kayaking and jetski.

Peaceful view at Lake Chūzenji, as I cruise along the lake, while Mount Nantai was shying away behind the clouds, didn’t manage to capture the full mountain view. Weather was breezy & cooling during this summer. I met a local who kayak along the lake and few others sitting under the trees just to wind down over the weekend and appreciating the beauty of this lake. Calmness remain even right after I bid sayonara to this beautiful lake!

Totally perfect. We went in late-winter when there was as yet a chill and there was an extremely lovely and serious air. There weren't many individuals and the grayness of the sky, the exposed state of the trees, and the quietness of the lake caused us to feel like we were in the setting of a book. Extremely gorgeous
The shade of the lake is extremely unblemished and interesting. It is extremely stunning when it is seen from Mount Hangetsu. You can visit it in 4 distinct seasons since it has four unique looks yet you ought to visit it during harvest time since it will be the most gorgeous in that season.
Lake Chūzenji likewise called Ocean of Satisfaction, is a picturesque lake in Nikkō Public Park in the city of Nikkō, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. It was made quite a while back when Mount Nantai (2484 m) emitted and obstructed the waterway.
The lake has a surface area of 11.62 km² and an outline of 25 km. Its height at the surface is 1,269 m (4,124 ft), and the water arrives at a profundity of 163 m (508 ft). The Yukawa Stream is the chief wellspring of water. It channels through the Kegon Falls.
Chuzenji Lake was found in 782 by a minister named Shōdō when his gathering prevailed with regards to climbing Mt. Nantai. Considered consecrated, the mountain was shut to ladies, ponies, and cows until 1872. In the Meiji time frame and early Showa period, numerous European government offices assembled excursion houses around the lake. The previous Italian estate has been recharged and is currently open to guests. Different destinations around the lake incorporate Futara Place of worship worked in 790, Chuzenji Sanctuary, and Kegon Falls. In spring, cherry blooms are sprouting. In summer, individuals can get away from the intensity and appreciate bird watching and climbing. In fall obviously, there are the popular lovely pre-winter leaves and in winter there is the Snow and Ice Celebration, in addition to winter sports like skiing and skating.

Found this place by chance from an ad while I was in Tokyo in April. It turns out to be my most precious memory during my trip. It's easy to get there from Oshiage (skytree) Station. About and 1.5 (?) ride.
I went on a week day and it was a few days before their cherry blossom festival ends. So not much people. Although there was not much cherry blossom left, the canola blossom field are just so beautiful! If there was sakura, you'll get that stunning pink and yellow flower combination. (Come around end or middle of march)
*Check their website for flower conditions.
I recommend buy some food and have a nice picnic there! But there is a local market near by. Please clean after yourself & keep the park clean. Overall, I love it and will go back when I have a chance to.

Kegon Waterfall is a majestic 97-meter cascade nestled in a forested cliff, renowned as one of Japan's three most stunning waterfalls. Its beauty transforms with the seasons, particularly captivating during autumn when vibrant maple leaves adorn the surroundings. The waterfall is located at the outlet of Lake Chuzenji, formed by the eruption of Mt. Nantai. The underground water from steep cliffs forms 12 smaller falls merging into the main cascade, creating a unique spectacle.
Lovely. It was amazing to see with lot of clouds. The route was so green and beautiful. Once you reached top buy ticket for 500 yen and they ll take you 100 meters down by lift to the view point. Very big falls and water force and noise was heavy. Better go in autumn to see colorful surroundings

A few different angles so make sure you find the walkable observation deck from the top, as well as the elevator observation deck. The elevator does not allow dogs.
Parking is available but during busy seasons, it’s better to find a spot further from the site. We waited over an hour to turn into the parking lot during the 2022 fall season. There are 2 lots for the falls themselves, but also many others so do a Google map search for them.

One of the best waterfalls in Japan! The view was really amazing I was glad I went. Be sure to take the elevator down to the lower area and check out the gift shop. It can get a little cool there depending on when you visit. Would be a great place to visit in the summer to cool off. Even if you don’t take the elevator down you’ll still have a good experience though.

This place was near our hotel residence. It was cold and rainy when we went there. Hence I rated it a 4 star.
We bought a ticket for yen 570 each to take the elevator down to the platform to see the waterfall. There is a shop down at the platform. It was interesting to note that they built the platform in 1930 - boring it through the rocks. The elevator looks very well kept and maintained

A breathtaking spot, I would have stayed there the whole day, even it was foggy and it was difficult to see the full view of the waterfall.
You can see a complex of waterfalls and a nice running river in sunny day, also the best time to visit is during autumn, the colour mix of trees and waterfall is unmatched.
You can enjoy the water fall for free from view point having 2 floors, or you can enjoy more realistic and more closer look if you go to the lower view point through elevator for about extra 500 yen if I still remember, this is also a great solution if you were unlucky and there was fog, you can check the live screen and go to the bottom view point to have a better view.
Anyway, plan your trip well, and make sure that it is sunny at the waterfall area.
Access: use bus from Nikko station, there is a good cheap full 2 day bus pass from Nikko station, don't miss it, you may some money.

Beautiful all around, well-deserved spot on 1 of the 3 best waterfalls in Japan! View is breathtaking, sound is powerful and the overall gorge/waterfall/forest combination makes it truly a sight to behold! The elevator down is worth the ride - you ‘ll ‘feel’ the waterfall way better, and perhaps get a little sprinkled. Regardless of taking the elevator or not, it’s really a sight to behold!

Our visit to Kegon Falls in Nikko, Japan during the winter season left us utterly amazed and in awe of the magnificent beauty that nature has to offer. As we approached the falls, we were immediately captivated by its sheer grandeur and the powerful rush of water cascading down from a height of 97 meters.
What made the experience even more special was how well the area had been developed and made accessible to tourists. Pathways and viewing decks were thoughtfully constructed to allow visitors to fully appreciate the mesmerizing sight of the waterfall. We were able to get up close to the falls as we marveled at the awe-inspiring force of nature right before us.
It was also our first encounter with snow and snowfall. The trees were adorned with delicate blankets of snow, transforming the entire landscape into a breathtaking scene straight out of a storybook.
In the midst of this picturesque setting, we couldn't help but feel a sense of reverence for the beautiful creation of God. The harmonious combination of the roaring waterfall, the peaceful snow-covered surroundings, and the ethereal snowfall filled our hearts with a profound appreciation for the wonders of the natural world.
Our visit to Kegon Falls will forever hold a special place in our memories, serving as a reminder of the stunning beauty that can be found in even the harshest of winter landscapes. It was a humbling experience that left us with a renewed sense of wonder and gratitude for the incredible creations of God that exist in our world.

I'm really mesmerized by looking at this waterfall.. I visited this place during the Autumn season(weekday). Even though it was more crowded than expected and a freaking cold day, Nikko's beautiful landscape made me forget all odds and thoroughly enjoyed the whole evening.. parking 🅿️ fee 320¥.. I could see many enjoying barbecue fish and baked sweet potatoes... I suggest everyone take the elevator which takes us 100mts down and enjoy the waterfall.. elevator view costs 570¥. this elevator has a history which is almost 90yrs old and quite big to fit almost 25people at a time..🇯🇵🇯🇵

Gorgeous falls, highly recommend the elevator in particular to have a view from the ground level. Do wish you could get closer to the falls, and you'll need to check the weather for fog (seriously, the first day we visited we could hear a tremendous waterfall, but literally couldn't see a glimpse).
The nearby lake is beautiful and clear, but the clouds rolling over the mountains are a double edged sword. It makes it frequently mystical feeling, but also makes some days less than ideal. Again, check the weather.

This area is stunningly beautiful but sadly we had torrential rain all day which did limit the experience. Definitely somewhere to visit when the sunshine is shining. It is a popular place for visitors so can get busy. I believe it is the third highest waterfall in Japan. There is a lift that takes you to the bottom of the falls, but be aware that there is then a walk with steps in case of limited mobility.

A very beautiful waterfall. You go down an elevator to a viewing platform down the cliffs, to see the entirety of the falls. There are some food vendors outside as well as on the viewing platform during season (visited in winter and they were closed).

The observation platform has 3 levels: worth checking all three levels given a small difference in the viewing angles provide a slightly different experience.
Winter is not the best season to come as there’s much less water than it is in the summer. Still, it’s a really nice view that brings me a sense of calmness and peacefulness. Also really cool to see the shadows of the waterfall.

It was the first time I had actually seen Ichimura's paintings, so I was looking forward to it, but unfortunately there were no paintings with motifs of tropical plants such as Amami's pandanus, which is one of Ichimura's most famous works. There were about 20 paintings on display from when he was born in Tochigi City and before he called himself Ichimura, he was called Yoneson, and some of them were reminiscent of later paintings, but I was a little disappointed. was. Went on a weekday just after the rain so no queue. A magnificent temple to worship the most famous army general, Ieyasu Tokogawa. The signs are clear. The site is well-managed and clean. Happy that we got to see this world heritage.

This was just lovely after we passed the historic red bridge and began our exploration with Tosho-gu Shrine. It is dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder and first shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate, who ruled Japan from 1603 to 1868. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was built in 1636. I try to imagine who was here a few hundred years ago.

One of the most beautiful if not the most beautiful shrines in Japan, having visited now for the second time. The historical significance of being the final resting place of Tokugawa, the shogun who unified Japan and brought about two hundred years of peace is incredible.

The Toshogu shrine in Nikko is one of these historical landmarks you must see while in Japan. It is one of the most beautiful and revered places in Japan. It is situated in the Nikko natural park and is surrounded by a beautiful nature. Parking is between 600 yens and 1000 yens depending the place. The shrine entrance is about 1300 yens, I don't remember clearly.

Even during bad weather it was a breathtaking sight. It really feels like you’re entering a different world, especially with all the stairs. The price was very reasonable and even without the audio guide there is a lot of information presented in English.
You also get to see the „see nothing, hear nothing, say, nothing monkeys“ and other iconic statutes and imagery. Definitely a must-see spot
Robert Wawrzyniak — Google review
This is the most famous temple at Nikko and rightly so, for it is a treasure trove of lacquer work, wood carving and traditional architectural styles. There are a great variety of structures at the site, ranging from tombs to stables and ornately decorated gateways. The whole complex is surrounded by majestic cedars, which greatly contributes to the atmosphere. Entrance costs 1300 yen.

I didn’t get to take a picture of the red bridge which I was really looking forward to and one of the reasons why I booked this tour. So I’m pretty bummed. The trip felt was rushed. I still give 4 stars because the shrine was really wonderful. It was so big that takes more than just 1 hour and half. It wa raining that time too so better not come in the summer is was so hot and bipolar rain.

Here is another World Heritage site for its masterpiece's architectural and decorative. Prepare for a long walk and many steps to cover all the shrines and temples around the area. To get to Inner Shrine Pagoda, you have to climb up another 200+ steps. Take your times and Enjoy!

I'm not big on shrines and temples but this was a nice visit. Entering the main shrine was surreal. You have to remove your shoes and keep your phone away. It was quiet even with all the visitors, and just imagining what it was like centuries ago is just a different experience altogether.
I went on a Monday afternoon, it wasn't crowded. A lot of locals and just a few chinese and western people. There are audio guides you can rent for 500 yen.

The most beautiful temples I’ve visited in Japan so far. The protection of these buildings is immaculate and they weren’t burnt down in some fire and rebuilt in the 1900’s they are actually four hundred years old and are just taken care of and repainted very well. I could feel the history breathing in and out of this place. Tokugawa’s treasures were well kept and I just can’t describe in clear words how happy that I, a history lover, was to to be able to touch and be so close to something so old and well taken care of for the public. I think Tokugawa would be proud at how many people love and respect his family’s heirlooms and resting places.

Of all the shrines and temples I've visited in Japan, this could be one of the most beautiful I've seen. Set amidst the lush greenery in the mountains of Nikko, the intricate and elaborate construction and design is really awe inspiring. It really helps to put into clarity how much Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu is revered as a deity by the locals.

December 2021 the main gate was still under construction :( sad but this shrine is still worth visiting, amazing sights and colors. Admission is worth it. You can easily spend 2 hours here.

Definitely worth the entry fee and trouble getting here. Highly recommended to visit here if you're staying in Tokyo. This is the best temple you can see from Tokyo without going half way across the country. Origin of the three wise monkeys, has a lovely pagoda. You can pay with an IC card. Very intricate carvings and painting in a fantastic gold and black color scheme. There are details everywhere you look. There is a photoservice that also takes a picture with your phone for free. The inner part can only be entered without shoes and no pictures can be taken inside the building. The steep stone steps to the northern part of the temple become extremely slippery when wet.

You can purchase the entrance ticket on the spot. I would recommend visiting this temple. It covers a wide area and has a lot of architecture to look at. It can be a bit challenging to walk around, especially when the ground is wet, so do be careful. Temple closes on time, so don't be late.

A beautiful shrine with lots to see, definitely worth a visit. Quite a lot of walking with steps so be aware if you have trouble getting around. It was very busy especially with groups of school children so a weekend visit might be quieter. Unfortunately, the day we visited we had torrential rain so not great.

One of the best. I loved the calm atmosphere, large trees, and minimal tourists. Maybe I was early at 930AM? It was perfect to take my time, take photos, and explore all sites.

The temple complex comprises several temple areas, each of which requires a separate entrance fee. Nikkō Tōshogū is the most popular, the most expensive, and the largest. Tickets must be purchased from a machine, which accepts cash, Suica card, and credit card. All other temple areas have cashiers to handle ticket sales.
We spent approximately two hours visiting three paid areas. My favorite was Nikkō Tōshogū, followed by Taiyu-in Temple and Nikko Futarasan jinja Haiden.
The ticket to Nikkō Tōshogū included a second ticket for entry to a building. They gather you into a group, as the guides explain the exhibits in Japanese only. At the end, the guide clapping two wooden sticks together to produce a surprisingly loud but crisp echo within the building, something about sending wishes to the dragon in the sky. We had almost forgotten about the second ticket until we heard the pleasant sound and followed it to the building.
At the Taiyu-in Temple, visitors can purchase a ticket for admission to the temple only, or a combination ticket that also includes admission to the Nikkozan Rin’nōji Temple, which was not particularly interesting. The Taiyu-in temple was intricate and worth the visit.
We drove to the temple and paid 700 yen to park our car in one of the 3-4 parking lots. You can take a bus from town for 300 yen one way per person.
The map may give the impression that the temples are a considerable distance apart, but in reality they are quite close. Walking between them did not take a long time, but visiting the interior of each building took up the majority of our time.
This is truly a beautiful UNESCO site.

It was such a treat to be able to enjoy this wonderful historical site. Many beautiful buildings with gold leaf and carvings and colorful designs with flowers and animals and such. Many stairs to climb with varied heights involved. The shines were impressive going back to the first Shogun in his honor!
The local history museum in Atomi village showcases how the Taira clan lived here post escaping overthrow of the Minamoto clan. You can actually feel what it was like to live here during earlier times, thanks to some interactive exhibits. The Kamakura Festival is a good time to visit, as they start lighting up the little Kamakura huts around 4.30pm - 6pm during this time period.
It's worth buying the ticket for the whole day. During the daytime it's fascinating to see Japanese history so closely, and at night is absolutely beautiful during the winter.

2024.02.23 I visited by bus after dinner at my accommodation before 8pm on a public holiday. The Heike no Sato conveys the lives of Heike fugitives to the present day. One lap took about 30 to 40 minutes.
It has been certified as one of Japan's Night View Heritage Sites, Kanto's Three Great Night Lights, and Tochigi Seven Lights, and the winter tradition of Kamakura Festival is a winter-only event that you should definitely visit at least once. The ``Mini Kamakura'' is romantically lit up, and the flickering of the candles creates a fantastical glow and worldview, and it's worth a visit!
There are nine thatched-roofed houses dotted around the large grounds, and in the ``Furnishing Highlight'' area, tools for making wooden ladles, a specialty of Yunishigawa, are on display, allowing you to imagine the lives of people in the past.
The lives and lifestyles of the fugitives who were defeated in the Genpei War and lived in hiding are full of untold stories and legends, and the Heike Village was restored as a base to pass on these stories.
Not only in winter, but also in spring, the mountain village is decorated with flowers such as Japanese staghorn grass, black snail grass, cypress grass, cypress grass, wild cherry tree, and purple palm azalea.
In early June, there is a grand festival called the Heike Festival, which includes a picture scroll procession of armored warriors and Heike costumes, the Heike biwa, a triumphal ceremony, and a kimono dance.
The ``Bamboo Tonight Festival'' is held from early July to late July, and the story of bamboo is illuminated by candlelight. The lights will be on from 7pm to 9pm.
On August 17th, there is the ``Yudonoyama Shrine Grand Festival'' where a lion dance is dedicated.
``Aurora Fantasy'' is held from early to mid-August, and seven colored aurora lights created using laser beams fill the sky.
You can enjoy seasonal flowers, plants, and events day and night throughout the year. A one-day ticket allows you to re-enter on the same day from 9:00 to 21:00, so please visit twice a day to take a walk during the day and see the illuminations at night.
[Business hours] 9:00-21:00 (last entry 20:45)
[Closed days] Open all year round
[Mini Kamakura Light-up] 17:30-21:00
♦Held from January 26th (Friday) to February 25th (Sunday)

The northwestern part of Tochigi Prefecture, where Yunishigawa Onsen is also located, is a hidden village of the Heike family. This is a place where historical materials are of great value as a folklore museum. In winter, the thatched roof of the gassho-zukuri style stands out even more mysteriously when covered with pure white snow. In the evening and at night, there are lights and mini-Kamakura lights, making the space even more magical.

At this time of year, the Kamakura Festival is lit up on weekends.
Those are very beautiful.
Also, since it is a village of the Heike family, there are homes of the Heike family, so you can see them as well.

If you love the old classic Japan that everyone knows, this is a fantastic place to go. Ninja show was amazing. Magistrate theater was hilarious even if I didn't understand it all. But I'll admit my favorite was the fire fighter museum. Truly inspirational. A wonderful place to spend a day. Easy to get lost in it all. Not as large as some places - it’s like Connor Prairie (Fishers, IN) with ninjas! Love being able to dress up! Street food choices, a few adult choices. Not much by way of souvenirs in the gift shop, though. Beautiful, although probably not something to do more than every few years. This isn’t so much a place to learn about the history, but it’s fun.

Was a lot of fun. We arrived, dressed up as samurai and enjoyed the park. The staff there act as if it were during the edo period and react to how you are dressed. There are many characters you can play. Then there were a few shows that were all awesome. The ninja show was incredible. The water show was also nice. Great place for kids too as they have a ninja and samurai training camp for them. They also have this cave / outdoor maze which was fun. There was a tilted house that throws your perception off and requires balance. They say its to train the ninjas. Great time overall.

It was a fantastic experience! Love it and would recommend it to everyone. I’ve been to the Edo park in Kyoto but this one gave a different atmosphere. The village is small and people are super friendly!!! There’s a lot of things to do here, like experiencing Edo textile weaves or the ninja training. You just need to pay a small extra amount of money.
The shows are free of charge, which was great since I enjoyed all of them. However, these shows do not have English explanations (except the ninja show), so maybe it's a little bit confusing for those who don't speak Japanese.
The only minus point is that there aren't many shops here and no convenient stores, so not many choices available. But in general, I still want to give this place a 5-star.

When visiting Nikko, my top priority is Edo Wonderland. I love the idea of immersing myself in a small town that captures the essence of old Japan. As soon as I step inside Edo Wonderland, I am transported to the Tokugawa period. The stunning architecture, the attire of everyone working there, and the food all make me feel like I am living in that time period. There are shows in every hour and different theaters, each one uniquely good and interesting. In the end, I wrap a coin in paper and throw it onto the stage as a token of appreciation. In addition, there is a free bus to take you to and from. I highly recommend this experience.

AMAZING EXPERIENCE! Outfit rentals are a little pricey (up to 10,000+ Yen for some) but worth while for the immersive experience. Admission tickets and outfit rentals can be done with credit cards, everything else inside is CASH ONLY, so come prepared if you plan to eat or drink inside the park.
Shows are scheduled a little too close together with not enough showings so you can't exit one show and jump right into the next, specially for shows that are popular and fill quickly. If you REALLY want to see a show at a specific time get there 10-15 minutes early and get in line.
Because of the show schedule I mentioned above, I HIGHLY recommend you get to Edo Wonderland as soon as they open, specially if you plan to rent an outfit. There is a 30-45min wait between selecting/paying for your outfit and the actual fitting. My wife and I used the wait time to eat so we could avoid getting hungry while at the park. We did buy some hot drinks between shows: the Amazake and Citron tea were delicious, and they had English menus at the little cafe. Due to the town being Edo themed, all the shop name signs are in Japanese only, although the park map has them in English.
There is a free shuttle from the JR Nikko station to Edo Wonderland. The shuttle does not run very frequently so make sure you either catch the first one or arrive close to one of the departures, I'll attach a picture of the JR Nikko Station Edomura shuttle schedule. The shuttle is red says Edo Wonderland right on it, you can't miss it. The stop is just left of the JR Nikko Station exit.

Fun place to visit, not only for the very well recreated Edo houses and townscape, but also for the different shows you can go to (all included in the admission price). You can easily spend the entre day. I recommend staying until they close and exit when you hear the drum... you'll be pleasantly surprised when you exit the park!
If you have the Nikko free pass, the bus to the park is included.

There was enough things to see and do from opening to closing. The food was tasty and the entertainment was enjoyable. If you have a translation device bring it. All the shows are in Japanese but still fun to watch if you can’t understand.
Make sure to decide on what you want to see most because there is not enough time. I did the Samurai Experience but there are several others to enjoy.

Although a huge fan of Disneyland and Disneysea, I think adding a visit to Edo Wonderland for an absolutely Japan-centered cultural experience might put the finishing touches on your delicious destination cake. For those who want an immersive taste of Edo Japan, this is an absolute must.
I've lived in Japan for 36 years, only a couple hours drive from Nikko, but had never made it to Edo Wonderland, until last Saturday for a special night Sakura viewing event (they apparently have special events throughout the year).
What a Wonderland it truly is! I often golf about 30 minutes away in Utsunomiya so I am now kicking myself that I never took the time until now to make my way here. I expected it to be really artificial and touristy, but oh no! The authenticity and the friendliness and welcome from each and every Edo costumed and Edo acting staff, was the real deal. Literally an exquisitely designed Edo-style village, even the carp in the expansive lake are a unpretentious with their deep brown color. The rice cracker osembei offered on main-street comes right off of grandma's clay hibachi and the Ninja show chooses to tell a story about the Ninja lifestyle instead of simply perform cool stunts. We were lucky to witness a beautiful procession featuring elegantly dressed Geisha, sip hot Amazake rice porridge and get the feeling we had time-slipped away from the crowds of modern Tokyo into the every day life of an Edo village.
This would be a fantastic place to go in any capacity; solo, couples, friends, family. I was also impressed with the well placed and unobtrusive English language support. The pageantry of Edo-style dress and architecture along with the smiling faces and hearty laughter of the welcoming staff will be a lasting memory for both visitors and those who call Japan home.

Stepping into Edo Wonderland in Nikko feels like entering a living museum of Japan's Edo period. The atmosphere is steeped in authenticity, transporting visitors to a time of samurais, ninjas, and Geishas. The performances are the heart of the experience, from the adrenaline-pumping ninja shows to the graceful and mesmerizing Geisha dances that captivate audiences.
What sets this place apart is its immersive nature. Exploring the ninja area is an adventure in itself, with challenging mazes and the excitement of a crazy house. The hands-on experiences, especially the samurai training for kids, offer a unique educational aspect, allowing young ones to learn about ancient weaponry firsthand.
But it's not just about the shows and activities; it's a holistic experience. Edo Wonderland's attention to detail in recreating the ambiance of the Edo era extends to the food offerings, allowing visitors to taste traditional flavors from that period, enhancing the overall journey through time.
This destination is a treasure trove for families, combining entertainment, education, and cultural immersion. It's a place where history comes alive, inviting everyone, from kids to adults, to step back centuries and experience the vibrant tapestry of Japan's past in a thrilling and unforgettable way.

Best time to visit would be in the spring, fall or winter. Gift shop, eateries, locker storage and also a prayer room. Lots of parking. Nearest station is Tobu World Square Station.

Had real fun exploring architectures around the world in one place, the information of those structures are available in English as well.
Very beautifully sculptured and well protected sculptures. It was knowledgeable and interesting to take photos and videos.
I went with 14 members on the new year holidays and it was not that crowded it was an enjoyable day.
The price was 2800 yen normally but with the Nikko pass you get a 1000yen discount which definitely is worth it! And they have a souvenir shop inside and some food stalls if you need a bite.

We liked the place a lot. You need about 1.5 to 2 hrs to visit and take pictures of all the models. My parents loved it. The models especially the churches from Europe are superb with attention given to every minute details of the architecture and design.

This place is fantastic. A lot of very big replica of monuments and places around the world with a lot of small details on each of them. A perfect way to discover the world, even for kids. They even have English explanation.

Since it was an open museum, avoid going to this place in summer.. We visited in the beginning of October and by god's grace it was not so sunny.. Personally I feel the ticket is pricey and in addition to the entry ticket the parking fee is 500¥. Easily you can spend & enjoy 3-4hrs..

This is nice holiday escape with your friends and family. All the renowned architecture are created as a model. There is illuminations also from autumn. You should visit in a time so that you can see it day and night as well. Whole park will take about 1.5 hours.

Amazing place. Ended up spending 5.5 hours. The detailing on the 1:25 scale models is so amazing. The ticket fee is discounted by 100 yen if you show them the coupon on their website. The model of sagrada familia church in Spain was very impressive. Also there is a diorama where you can see 3 train running. Thoroughly impressed and amazed.

Do not miss this amazing place when in Nikko. You get to see the famous places and architectures of the world all within an area of about 2 to 3 football field. There are of course a lot of focus on Japanese historical buildings and modern buildings. I do find the great wall of China is kinda under represented the actual.

We visited with family and kids. Everyone explored and enjoyed it to the fullest. The miniature structures were fascinating for kids. Keep 100 yen coins handy for mini shows at each structure. Would definitely recommend visiting if traveling to Nikko.

Miniature buildings are all maintained and well-crafted neatly
You can also put 100Jpy to trigger some miniature performances like marching, dancing, working amusement attractions or ships passing the canal.
Worthy 2800 JPY if you like nice architecture around the world.
Especially, around Japan.
If you don't know where you should visit in Japan, I recommend starting with this place

Coming here on a weekday is highly recommended. This can be pretty packed on weekends (I know because I have been here twice), but this time we had the park almost all to ourselves, we spent like 15 minutes each exhibit so we had so much of nice pictures to choose from, I am only posting the ones we are not in though, and it’s not a lot unfortunately, but yeah, it was a visit well spent and I would come back again just for the heck of it. 😁

It’s a beautiful place of the well known places/ sites in the world. Wru beautifully down and very realistic. Loved that the miniature Trina’s and airplanes are functional just like the real ones 🤩

Stayed 3 hours as a group of 3 teens and 5 adults when we planned on 2 and we could have easily stayed 5. The detail, the cleanliness, and the gardening (bonsai trees everywhere to go with the miniature building) were all done exceptionally well. We very much enjoyed comparing the size of the structures to each other - using 1/25 scale for everything allowed us to gain some perspective on how large some buildings really are.
Earl Goodman — Google review
Great way to spend a couple hours. Even my 14 yo was entertained by the buildings. We went during the week and there were few people there. The weather was perfect but if you go on a warm day I would recommend a hat or umbrella as there is little shade. They really are something interesting to see and worth the ticket price. Staff was very nice and the park was clean. I recommend it as a stop when in the area.

I had a fantastic first visit to Tobu World Square! As an art lover, the attention to detail in the intricate models blew me away. The park is a testament to the saying ‘It’s a small world indeed,’ bringing global landmarks right to your fingertips. My weekend visit was especially pleasant due to the lighter crowds. Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates the artistry of architecture—it’s a world tour in just a few hours and a reminder of how connected our world truly is!

The stone carvings were unique and I felt very rejuvenated after spending some time here.
We went on a nice autumn day and the garden was absolutely beautiful!
Note that some areas require you to do a small hike up some stairs so make sure you wear the right shoes. ^^ But the view is worth it and the nature will give you energy.

The Oya History Museum, a one-of-a-kind attraction, is situated in an old quarry that boasts an impressive system of giant underground chambers used for exhibitions and concerts. The sheer size of the interior and its fascinating history will leave visitors stunned. It's advisable to bring warm clothing as it can get quite chilly inside. This is a perfect meeting place with convenient parking facilities available nearby. Visitors should also remember to bring a light shirt as the caves are typically around 6 degrees Celsius in temperature.

Visited in October 2020
The quarry-turned-cavern museum is a bit far from Utsunomiya downtown, connected by just a narrow prefectural road and if you bother to use public transportation, an hour bus ride from the central station.
Nevertheless it's a unique experience because to my knowledge, it's the only subterranean museum in Japan. Worth a visit especially if you are into history and art. The cavern turned out to be much bigger than what I expected. It's said it started relatively small since the Edo period and later the exploitation of the stone picked up during the industrialization of Japan afterwards (AFAIK it was only closed for commercial quarrying in 1970s). In some places, the differences of the etched bedrock and walls due to manual and modern mechanical masonry techniques are shown.
There were also interesting permanent art exhibitions inside the cavern. They also exhibited the photos of films and TV series that took place in the cavern, one of them is cult TV series Yuusha Yoshihiko (I think it was one of the episodes in 1st season).

It's a great place to visit during the hot summer. The whole tour only takes about 30 minutes so don't plan on it taking up a lot of your day.
It's like a cave so it's really chilly and you might want to prepare a light windbreaker or jacket. It's amazing to imagine that people carried such heavy rocks on their backs.
The cave was the location for many movie shootings or music videos and so on. Even Enya visited a few years ago, it seems?
You should make this one part of your whole day itinerary. There is a nearby Stone Temple and a stone quarry also not too far away.

A somewhat quirky spot for a foreign tourist, but glad I discovered this place on the drive back from Nikko. There is ample free parking and a short walk will take you to the cave entrance. Upon entry, there is a small museum with artifacts from when the cave was constructed. The real attraction however begins when you descend a staircase into the cool depths of the old quarry. Neutral and coloured lighting creates a mysterious scene, illuminating the scarred walls and exhibits scattered about. I ended up spending a decent amount of time here, exploring each nook and cranny as I went. Upon exit there is a shop and restaurant where you can buy Oya stone keepsakes, the very material which was mined from within. Definitely worth a look if passing by.

It takes approximately 32 minutes to reach the awe-inspiring Oya History Museum (大谷資料館, Ōya Shiryōkan) from Utsunomiya. Situated in the picturesque Tochigi prefecture, this remarkable museum is ingeniously nestled within an expansive, abandoned stone quarry. The sheer craftsmanship and ingenuity displayed within this man-made marvel are nothing short of extraordinary, leaving visitors in a state of awe and disbelief. This place is super unique. It’s basically a walk-through cave where they used to mine stones used in building, and it kind of looks like something out of a sci-fi movie. Utsunomiya Futaarayama Shrine, a renowned Shinto shrine located in the heart of Utsunomiya city, is easily accessible from the train station and boasts an impressive long staircase and torii gate. This storied complex is particularly famous for hosting the Rei-sai thanksgiving festival every October. Visitors can enjoy some local snacks at nearby food stalls and take a pleasant walk to Utsunomiya Castle.
The arch of the Shintoism's shrine is too large structure on the side of road in city. Even events happen here, like Kekkon(marriage) or any special occasion. It has many structures of deities, and red colored Tori gates take through them from outer world to the inner spiritual world. I love this big shrine here, the customs locals do here in a que is not faded here unlike other city places. One must experience this through a visit and following the things that are prescribed earlier.

Urban oasis in the heart of Utsunomiya. Like many shrines in Japanese cities, it's perched on top of a hill and can be reached by climbing a steep stair. There is no lift or escalator of any kind unlike in some downtown shrines elsewhere, so some cautions are needed. As a roadside station in Moka City (formerly Ninomiya Town), which boasts the highest production volume in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan's largest strawberry kingdom, approximately 70% of the direct sales corner for agricultural products is occupied by strawberries. Branded strawberries such as Tochiaika are sold at reasonable prices in the B-grade product corner.
The souvenir corner also has a wide selection of sweets made with strawberries.
Gelato made with strawberries also seems to be popular.
This facility was built over 25 years ago during the old town period, and now that large and stylish roadside stations with Starbucks have been built in the area, such as Shimotsuke and Chikusei, it is no longer convenient to come here. Tsukubasan Shrine is an ancient Shinto shrine situated at the foot of Mount Tsukuba in a picturesque mountain setting. It is well-known for its undulating rooftop and annual festivals, as well as being a popular destination during autumn when the leaves change color. The shrine can be easily accessed via a short walk from the nearby bus stop or by taking the cable car which has an adjacent station. Visitors must pay for parking, but entrance to the shrine itself is free.
Beautiful grounds and buildings, especially the azaleas and wisteria. We visited during Golden Week, so there were lots of fresh green leaves. I'm sure the large gingko tree is beautiful in fall.
If either of the shrines on the mountain peaks are closed for weather-related reasons when you visit, you can purchase the goshuin at this temple. I believe they will confirm that you visited the mountain peaks in order to purchase though. The cable car is nearby as well as a hiking trail, so there were many people in hiking gear.

Nice place. Famous for autumn leaves. There’s cable car station right behind the shrine. Have pay ¥300/¥500 for the car parks(per 1day). Hiking can be started here as well. Restaurants are also available around. Entrance is free.

Its a nice walk to the shrine up the hill. It was quite busy but with kind employees keeping things clean. There were nice wood carvings not on the main shrine but a few stories down. The main shrine and omikuji stations had some social distancing. People are friendly.

A great shrine to visit! Just a short walk from the Bus stop, this shrine was huge and impressive, with a lot of things to see. Also this shrine is close to the cable car entrance and the hiking trails to Mount Tsukuba.

Beautiful nature hike, great choice for beginning climbers. Shuttle bus from the station makes easy access, the shop on the mountain has surprisingly good ramen, and champon. Would recommend.
Mount Tsukuba, located in Ibaraki Prefecture, is a renowned 2,877-foot mountain with two peaks that offers stunning views of Tokyo and Mount Fuji. It features a cable car and hiking trails for visitors to explore its natural beauty. While not as tall as Mount Fuji, it still provides breathtaking scenery and is a popular destination for hikers looking for a slightly less challenging experience.
Nice and beautiful. Good for hike. The path is clearly maintained in natural way. No concrete or any other artificial material. However, in rainy days, it's muddy and slippery at some places. Anyway nice experience to hike it. For those who unable to climb it other options available. Cable car is cheap and easy. It's 600 ¥ per adult. Ropeway is what available.
There are shops around the base of mountain. And also few shops at the top. But, as expected, price is bit high. After reaching the top you can enjoy the panoramic view. That's marvelous. It will refresh you. If you can bring food and water the hiking will cost nothing.
Wash room facilities available. So I recommend this place for your next trip. Congrats

The view from both peaks was beautiful, but the scenery the peak 女体 offered was absolutely breathtaking. The blue trail is the shortest, but a bit difficult for someone without a good physical condition.

Very beautiful. This is my opinion on the mountain trails only. Some safety measure are lacking. I’ve worked 10years as mountain park ranger:
1. Most hiking trails/course are dangerous, some are experienced level trails. Difficultly of each trail are not labeled. Most trails are not for kids. Warnings before entering are not labeled, ask fluent Japanese speaker.
2. No park rangers monitoring entrance or exits of hiking trails/course. If you have a serious injury onsite , you will be alone. Enter at your own risk.
3. Some trails do not have access to the cable cars or rope ways.
4. No radio communication is available at checkpoints on the trials.

Mount Tsukuba or Tsukuba-san is located at the northern end of Tsukuba near Tokyo. It is one of the famous mountains in Japan because of it’s two peaks (Nyotai-san and Nantai-san). It is very easy hike mountain for beginners. The trails are rocky but refreshing. Easily accessible from Tsukuba center by bus. You can reach the peaks either cable car or ropeway. From the top you can enjoy the panoramic view of Tsukuba. Even in the clear sky day, the great mighty Fuji can be seen from the peaks. I will recommend you to go there in sunny day to enjoy the mountainous environment.
Arifa Jannat — Google review
Japan’s one of the most beautiful mountains in Mt Tsukuba. There are 6 courses on Mt Tsukuba and the most difficult course is Miyukigahara course. It was difficult for me because I don’t have much experience in hiking, hence I found it a bit difficult.
This course takes us to the peak directly and on return it’s easy to take the cable car to descent if you are tired or lazy.
There are lot of eateries around the Tsukuba shrine. Also there is a small restaurant at the peak.
Depending on the interest, you can choose any of the 6 courses to truly experience the picturesque views.
If you are using public transportation.. make sure to note the timings to and from Tsukuba station.
Also there is a Tourist information centre near the Mt Tsukuba, they are really helpful. We missed the last bus to Tsukuba station, and they helped us in booking a cab to Tsukuba San guchi bus stop as there will be buses every 30 mins to Tsukuba station.

Very picturesque mountain known for its two peaks, Nyotai-san and Nantai-san. The names translate to female body and male body respectively, related to Izanami and Izanagi. The peaks themselves are very accessible with many hiking trails, a cable car, and a ropeway. The walk between the two peaks isn't too long and there is a nice area in the middle with some small shops and snacks. Apparently on clear, sunny days you can see Mt. Fuji and other Tokyo landmarks.
It seems that the view from Nyotai-san is a very famous photo spot. When we visited during Golden Week, there was a long line waiting to get photos and signs asking guests to keep the photo-taking time to about 3 minutes per person. The shrine next to the photo spot sells goshuin and a commemorative towel.
Getting up to Nantai-san was more steep, but the views were stunning! When we visited, the shrine here was closed, but you can still get the goshuin from Tsukubasan Shrine at the base.
The seasonal flowers were beautiful as well, with the whole trail lined by azaleas (late April 2023).

Mt.Nyotai&Mt.Nantai, the 877m of hike to the top of Tsukubasan. We park at tsutsujigaoka parking lot, we pass the famous “benkei-nanamodori”, we had our lunch at Koma view terrace and we ride the ropeway going down. A beautiful, fulfilling & challenging family bonding.

The ropeway will take you up to the summit with ease! There are several restaurants at the summit. It should be noted, however, that most of them only accept cash. We then walked down from the summit. It was exciting, with steep slopes and lots of huge rocks. This is a great place to enjoy nature.

Simply beautiful, we loved our time hiking along the Mt Tsukuba loop trail ❤️ Mt Tsukuba has two peaks - Nyotai and Nantai. This mountain is believed to be blessed by the deities 1000 years ago when this mountain hosted the deities with great care - the mountain is always filled with green vegetation and beautiful flowers and so many variety of birds and insects live here. There were many shrines along the way of the climb. All this reminded me of Thirupathi’s Thirumala in India : almost all aspects of this mountain seemed very similar to Thirumala. Highly recommend visiting if you’re around the area 🌸

This is perfect time of the year for hiking. They have several trails to get to the top and cable car/rope way are available every 10’ too.
The path can be steepy and rocky at some points but overall the trails are so beautiful.

Though a lot of stories, and folklore there are many history behind these mountains and many spots to visit. It is a very easy hike mountain even for a beginners, the lovely weather and trails are quite refreshing. Anyone of any age will enjoy the mountains trail. And there are small shrine or rocks along the shrine with history written on it.

Yunoka Shiobara Rest Area is a stopover that offers a glimpse of Edo-era architecture outside. It sells fresh produce, including daikon and fruits, as well as recommended fresh milk. Additionally, there are local bakeries inside for those with an interest in food shops. The rest area boasts clean washrooms and ample parking space for convenience and safety. Notably, the rice fields have been transformed into works of art worth enjoying along with snapping a few pictures.
It's a road side station. There's a cafe, restaurant, bakery and farmers market.

A good place to visit with family, and spend the day. The main attraction is, as the name suggests, flower, more specifically, roses. They have got usual roses, like white, pink, and red, but there are so many mixes of colors that I can't actually name those. I have found some dahliahs, and other flowers too. You can climb to the top to enjoy a panoramic view of the surrounding mount tsukuba, or you can relax in the sheds. There are a few rides too, and a open car tour.

Don't buy the ticket online!! Wait for the 20% discount Coupon given to you by BUS Driver when you get off. If you've been to Keisei Baraen and was impressed, well this IBARAKI FLOWER PARK is dozens times better!! They have way more roses on a way bigger surface and cool Aoyama style cafes restaurants shopping in the 3 buildings on site and a rose farm simulation greenhouse and wood fire for your self grilled meat or marshmallows. But back to the roses, they almost omit all English ones that are so easy to get sick and instead have mostly French and Japanese Roses 🌹 that fare better in this climate. I was so impressed, beyond imagination and would go again there in a heartbeat. The shockingly STYLISH Ibaraki Flower Park has such cool interiors and layout, forests, Momiji, crafts workshops every day 🍁 and for spring there's Sakura cherry blossom forest and Hydrangea with Irises! I am speechless and wait there's MORE right now, Winter Illumination!! So lovely even on the central roses there are lights! Best experience, there are not many busses to get here, we came with first one from Ishioka Station departing at 9:45 arrived at 10:15 at the park and took last bus down at 17:35! When coming by bus you get 20% discount coupon in hand from bus driver! Don't buy the ticket online!

Great attractions, nature, and of course racing. The one star that it falls short on is food. The huge positive is that you are allowed to bring in your own food and have a picnic of it, so only you are to blame if you aren't happy with the limited selection of food services. The food is not bad, don't get me wrong but there aren't enough options to satisfy a multi-day trip.
