Their museum of style icons is very interesting. Clothing and ephemera of famous people on display.
Their ‘pre loved’ antiques (NOT their products I might add) department is a bit of a joke with prices so high, items are 5 to 10 times the price compared what you’d buy the stuff for on auction websites!
Andre Devereux — Google review
The only people who want to be here is the older demographic going bananas over the prices of items here. I’m pretty sure the staff are pretty much done and ready to push everything online so they don’t need to engage the masses.
One point less for the creepy Xmas themed area and the green handed mannequins looking like the grinch. In June.
Maybe I just don’t get this one…

The silverware is absolutely stunning and the restaurant was amazing. We were a group and we had cake and tea. The cakes were wonderful and the food fantastic. Great place to meet up with friends and 5.
Corne Elmarie Moll — Google review
Great sale plenty to choose from! Most stock in the shop was heavily reduced.
I'd suggest getting there early as it can get quite busy as the day goes on and I'd imagine parking could be a difficulty.
We didn't take a trip up to the museum but it's always worth a visit.

Was there to see Kurt Cobain's guitar from his bands song " smells like teen spirit". Had a look about as well. Had a bite to eat also. Nice place.

Beautiful place, good to browse, always nice to get a special little gift for people from and THE place for gorgeous Christmas tree decorations 😍
Staff are always friendly and although I havent tried it the cafe looks very popular and probably worth a visit if you fancy a bite to eat.
I nipped upstairs to the museum of style icons (they have a lift for pushchairs and wheelchair users :) ). Was cool to see some iconic fashion pieces and a nice vibe. You can get round in 30 mins if you reading the info as well 😉

Went there for a visit to the icon museum (special interest in Princess/Lady D), love the displays! Wanted to try the soup at the restaurant but we went a bit late so they were gone, so will need to come on another day but absolutely fine as we plan to go back anyway! Their silverware are gorgeous by the way!!

Had lunch here it was gorgeous, such lovely details like an ice bucket with the water taps. Cant recommend it enough. Shop is very spacious with a great range available. Having the museum upstairs was a great activity and it was free! Amazing place to call too

A lovely afternoon tea, but I didn't have an option to make any changes. My booking was taken over the phone and I wasn't asked did I want to make any changes. I was stuck with what we got ok the day. So, if you go please tell them what you do and don't eat.
Lovely food, but I found the portions small. We were actually hungry after. A lovely room and a nice idea to do, but don't go if you are already hungry!!!
Also, take out the scribbled bit on the note in the table and just rewrite it. Keep the standard up.

Was there to get some jewelry. Managed to get a nice bracelet and a necklace.
They have already added the Christmas 🎄 section to the store. Couldn't go for the factory tour as it's on during the weekdays.

Free museum of clothing and memorabilia from various pop culture icons/ hollywood stars. Has a lift /wheel chair acces and takes about an hour to go through. Well worth a visit if in the area.

What a wonderful place to visit.
Great parking, very friendly staff, excellent food and of course excellent gifts and products available to purchase.
The museum upstairs is well worth a visit too.
Make sure and leave time as there is so much to see and do you shouldn't have to rush.
Highly Recommend

Lovely place. Upmarket. Lovely items on sale. Nice restaurant attached. Free exhibition upstairs. Best time to visit is late January or early February for the sales. Impressed by the tributes to long-standing emplyees. Newbridge appreciates its staff.
Nice place, really friendly staff. Was a cold November day but still a nice place to visit. A good mix of animals, playgrounds and a nice walk around a small wood. Plenty of places to sit down for picnics if you bring your own food or a coffee shop to buy stuff with toys for the kids to play with. Do parties as well which looks nice.
Also went back for a nice sunny day in may, great place for the kids to run around and more fun with the big playground/ obstacle course dry.

This was our first visit to Wallaby Woods. It's not widely signposted but it is easy to find on Google Maps. Have a care on the roads nearby as they are bog roads and can be quite bumpy in places. Wallaby Woods itself deserves to be much better known than it is as it's probably the best attraction in the area for children. We spent over five hours there with my nephew's, they particularly enjoyed the bouncy castles and the zip line. The grounds are very well cared for, as are the animals, some of whom you get to hold. The staff are very friendly & helpful. The food in the cafe is reasonably priced and very nice. If you're looking for a place to keep the kids occupied for an afternoon then I would not hesitate to recommend Wallaby Woods, you won't be disappointed.

This place pleasantly surprised me. Doesn't look like much from the outside but inside is very pretty forest walk with lots of animals and flowers. We also got to pet snake, rabbit, tortoise, guinea pig, donkey and a dragon!
We also got to feed albino wallabies, really great place.

Great day out in this pet farm with great playgrounds for all ages. It's not very big so don't need to worry that kids will get tired walking around. We loved the zip line and the little playground located conveniently beside the cafe. There is couple of picnic spots and a football pitch. Would definitely recommend!

Stallion-breeding stud farm, plus formal Eastern- and rugged Irish-style gardens, plus horse museum.
If you love horses, and beautiful gardens, then this is the place for you. Stunning setting, beautifully presented, and just so much to see. A picture around every corner you turn. If you have a thing for horses, you will love this even more, as there are horses, horses, and more horses everywhere. It is very well priced, the food is a bit pricey, but absolutely fantastic. All In all, a highly recommended experience.

Pristine facilities with lovely grounds to walk about. Interesting view into life on a stud farm. The Japanese gardens are small but well maintained with careful attention to detail.
There is a small gift shop for memorabilia and a nice restaurant with a good choice of food. Plenty of parking available when we went. Well worth a visit.
John Blain — Google review
Amazing experience! Japanese gardens are beautiful. We chose to go with guided tour of grounds and it was a great experience. Tour guide was amazing and friendly. Race course experience was new and exciting activity for me ,especially the actual race at the end. Overall a great day out. The only downside if any is how restaurant is organised. There is a huge hold up at the till . Other than that, its a place everyone should visit.
Rasa Ievkalne — Google review
A fabulous layout, the gardens are intricate and interesting. There are lots of fun surprises in the layout of the Japanese gardens too, we had small children with us and they were safe and able for all the steps and climbs. I would say some of it isn’t suitable for prams or wheelchairs but a lot of the grounds are. The plant diversity was wonderful. The food in the cafe on the grounds is more dinner food, it is quite expensive but the portions are big and the food is well worth it. The staff are polite and the cafe and grounds are very clean.
Laura Jane Johanna — Google review
I went into this knowing very little about what to expect and this was wonderful! Harry gave us a little tour that was so much fun! We learned the history and about the horses. Next we did the racehorse experience and had a blast. We were able to walk around and see the foals that were in the fields. We ended with the Japanese gardens which were gorgeous! Definitively worth the visit.

Superb day out.
First time here. Our guide Sue was excellent. Great stories well paced. Very amusing. .The interactive experience was really great. . The Japanese gardens were excellent and we got a warm sunny day. We at e in the restaurant which was excellent but a little bit pricey. (9.00 euro for a sausage roll ,chips and a side salad) but the staff we very helpful and friendly.
Everything was spotless and clean toilets always a good sign.

What a gem! Perfect for horse and flower lovers of all ages. The tour was the perfect length with excellent information and humor. We even got to see and pet "Tommy the Teaser". Seeing all of the horses in their paddocks was amazing. Surprisingly laid back about walking the grounds. Lovely gift shop and cafe. The Japanese gardens were quite extensive. Beautiful flowers and layout. I feel like for the price of admission, you definitely get your money's worth!

Fantastic experience. We were here for 2 hours but could have spent several more. The horse experience is the best I've ever seen. David gave us an amazing tour and it's great to visit at this time of year with all of the foals. So much to see and do here and the history of the stud is very interesting. 👍👍

Lovely place, both the gardens and the stud are well worth your time. The garden is beyond stunning and I highly recommend timing yourself to get one of the guided tours, it's well worth it. Puts the whole place into perspective. Very friendly and helpful staff. I've been a few times but this was my partners first trip.

An excellent trip out....Brilliant for the kids whether the kids or yourself are into horses or not. Beautiful landscaping and walks around the paddocks with one of the creamiest 99 ice creams I've had in a while. The Irish Horse Racing Experience is a. Excellent tour of Ireland and our love affair with the Sport of Kings. Kids were totally bowled over with the foals. The Japanese Gardens are beautifully serene and very soulful....Well worth the money

A beautiful place to visit for a walk or a day out with the family. Amazing gardens, and you also get to see fabulous houses in stables and out in the paddocks. The playground for children is safe and has loads to amuse, including sandboxes.
The gardens offer a feast for the eyes and are a place of zen and calm.
Finishing off your day in the restaurant where they serve wholesome dinners, sweet treats, and the best coffee ever!
I've become a yearly ticket holder because I love it so much, and it's great value, but you can also pay on the day.
A must see if u visit Kildare

Had a lovely time wandering around. There were two foals born the day before, which was nice to see. There is a lovely Japanese garden and a fairy trail for the children to follow. Also a play area and somewhere to eat and a gift shop.
Grace O'Donohoe — Google review
We were lucky enough to fit this in before our trip to the airport and I wish we'd had 2 or 3 more hours. It is an incredible facility. The animals are clearly well looked after. We missed the gardens because I lingered too long in the interactive experience and visiting the horses :)
There were lots of babies and moms as they haven't been weaned yet this time of year. The weather was gorgeous which made for an even better experience.
The food was good and they had plenty of gluten free options.
Our baby even got to pet a million dollar retired race horse (exercising caution of course) he LOVED it.
Incredible to see. Highly recommend.

It was quick getaway for the bank holiday weekend. Typical Irish weather with rains, but I must say we really enjoyed our visit.
Saw the stallions and the stud farm. Japanese Garden was my favourite. It was truly an adventure walking though the garden. It is well designed and laid out.
Will recommend for a nice family outing.

The Japanese gardens are lovely, and there's loads of hidden paths around it.

Well worth a visit. I highly recommend joining a tour if you can, as it was very informative and interesting. Lovely grounds to walk around and plenty to see to keep you occupied for a couple of hours. If you are going with children, then the interactive museum ticket is a good add-on. The cafe was really good - the soup I had was absolutely delicious!
Delta Sensory Gardens, located in Strawhall Industrial Estate, cover two-and-a-half acres of land and feature 16 interconnected sensory gardens. These gardens were designed to be a therapeutic outlet for adults with disabilities and offer a stunning collection of individual themed gardens with sensory elements that engage visitors from all angles. We really enjoyed our visit here last Monday. It is so well laid out and each garden magnificent, even at this time of year. Bob and all the staff were very welcoming and helpful. There is a lovely energy here. And we would highly recommend the cafe, the lunch was delicious and very reasonable. Do pay a visit, its uplifting. Many thanks.

Stunning collection of "Individual Gardens" laid out in a connected patchwork way.
Each "themed" garden has many "sensory" elements which engage you from all angles.
Our visit in November meant extra colours and aromas which with the lovely sunny weather made for a great day for our family party.
One of the most surprising aspects of the whole Delta Centre is its Town centre location nestled in an industrial estate. This only adds to the magic and surprise that the gardens provide.
As a keen amateur photographer there are many opportunities for a wide variety of shots. Dependant on the time you visit the light plays with different areas of each of the gardens.
The whole experience was superb and one I will repeat when we're next in Carlow. This is the kind of landscape best revisited each season to see it in a new light each time.
Well done to everyone who has worked so hard to create this wonderful community space and those who continue to care for and maintain it.

The four-acre farmland features a pet farm with ponies, miniature goats, rabbits, cows, reindeer, pot-bellied pigs and various birds. Just spent 3 nights here. Overall a very enjoyable experience. Great spot for families. Kids really enjoyed it especially the animal petting farm. They loved the play ground and tractor ride. Lots to keep them entertained. Also great entertainment for adults including bingo and music in the evenings. Nice selection of hot food in the shop at a reasonable price. Staff were very friendly and accommodating to our large group. Very relaxed and friendly campsite! Toilets and showers were ok. No toilet paper or soap available which was an inconvenience but other than that we had no complaints!
Will definitely be back

We stayed one night as we were passing through the area. Eoin was very welcoming, the site was well laid out, good lighting to the toilets( which are a bit rustic but kept clean and tidy).
The animals were a huge hit with the kids and the play area.

So glad ranchos has reopened, had a great weekend. Eoin, oisin and the team have done a great job cleaning and rebuilding it, the new cafe is a great addition and the menu is perfect and delicious. Can't wait to see what else they add. Tractor ride is great not just for kids but and its free and that includes the muddy pool they drive into.
Diarmuid White — Google review
Lots of confusion here with the name etc. So it's still rancho reilly. Rustic is gone. It's a campsite only but has its own pet farm. The old main building is gone due to a fire. We have a new sole owner the amazing Eoin whom is the host with the most. A lot of investment has gone into updating the site and its very visible. Playground loads new stuff. New cafe that doubles as a common area. Toilets are maintained throughout the day. The free frog hunt and tractor rides are a great unique touch. Eoin travels the campsite over the weekend having fun with all the guests eg playing football, tennis even raced a bunch of us and yes he won. You can't help but want him and rr to succeed and excell. We thought we would just go this once but are already planning our return. Nearest shops are 3 mins drive away. One pic is of kt fight that was put up on a big screen in the camping area (not sure whom organised but thank you). Highly recommended to all families.

Fantastic place to go camping with young children! You have access to the petting farm with horses, pigs, deer, snakes, lizards, rabbits etc, horse rides, tractor rides, playground, cafe and indoors play zone all included in the price you pay to camp. In the evening there is a frog hunt, fire pits, it is a really good place to visit. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was because of the water was not reliable for showers etc

Visited in April 2017 with our two kids 7 and 4. Very good value - €6 per child and €3 per adult. No time limit, spend as long as you like. Has lots of attractions all free - playground, petting zoo (bunnies, snakes, lizards), donkey and pony rides, go cart track, sandpits, farm animals to feed, indoor play center and café with hot food and lots of seating with reasonable food prices but also picnic areas if you want to bring your own.
Staff were very friendly. When my daughter was upset after spilling a drink the owner spent over 10 mins joking with her to cheer her up and gave both kids a free lollipop. Lots of free parking too.
Highly recommended.

This is a little hidden gem. We loved walking around and getting a feel for what it would have looked like when it was in use. The views from the top are spectacular. I highly recommend taking your camera with you.
There is no fee to enter. It is steep and as expected rocky in places. We managed in normal trainers so no need for special equipment or shoes though.

Nice ruins integrated into the landscape. It's usually very windy at the top. It is worth going to see the sunset because sometimes it can surprise you with its beauty. the remains of the castle are raw and have been slowly decaying for 300 years. A nice place, luckily not yet commercialized

Amazingly beautiful view of the area of this historic castle. A great place to bring kids. Be a little mindful of where you go, you could fall over the side if you are goofing around. There are no guides here.

From the top of the rock, you'll be rewarded with panoramic vistas of the surrounding countryside. It's a perfect spot for capturing unforgettable photos or simply soaking up the fresh air and scenic beauty.
The climb to the top is manageable for most ages, and there's plenty of space for kids to explore the ruins while learning about the castle's past. While it's a gravel path to the top, you'll only be able to take a stroller to a certain point; so do keep that in mind if you're bringing one!

Lovely spot for some exploring and visiting a piece of history. Also has a small church across and graveyard with some very old headstones. Be warned the walk up is very steep and some areas do not have railings - not wheelchair accessible due to steps at the entrance.

It's a peaceful place with excellent views. It was not very crowded which makes it even more peaceful.
The views from the top were breathing. You can see the whole county from above.
The entrance is free.. If you are planning on visiting in Taxi, you might face issues on the return journey as most of the drivers might reject the trip due to the steep road that leads to the place.
It's also a single road so your driving skills might be tested :)
Overall a good place to visit if you are in Portlaoise.

Kilkenny Castle is one of Irelands most significant historical attractions, with an artfully restored interior and large garden. The castle was built by Anglo-Norman William Marshal for his wife in the early 1300s, and it became the Irish residence of the Butler family for 600 years. Today, the castle dominates Kilkenny City and its complex story can be pieced together through eight centuries.
Beautiful castle and grounds. We bought tickets in advance online which is recommended, though there was no line when we arrived anyway (about 11am on a Sunday). We did the self tour and although I’m sure we missed out on a lot of information that a guided tour would provide, I felt we got enough out of the self tour to make it more than worth it. Especially enjoyed the art gallery. Be sure to take the extra time to explore the castle grounds before or after your visit.

Absolutely beautiful castle. We did a guided tour and the guide was phenomenal. Extremely kind, patient, and intelligent. She was fabulous. I highly recommend taking a tour with her as we never would have gotten as much out of it if we didn't go with her. Best decision we made.

I loved that they allow going to the garden without paying. We did that because my 9 yo was tired & not interested in going in. Beautiful garden & a magnificent structure! Also the history was amazing to hear from our Dublin based tour guide! Amazing view of the river from the court!

Took guided tours ... it's at the end of the season (mid-September) and our group was small, my friend and I and one other couple so it was a great tour, very intimate allowing us to as plenty of questions. My friend was over 60 and was able to get a discount on her ticket

Such a beautiful and interesting place! The OPW have done a magnificent job restoring and maintaining this castle. Makes it easy to imagine life for the people who lived there. Definitely worth a visit. We ran out of time to properly explore the gardens, which are free to enter with no ticket - leave some time for that, in addition to the castle interior.

We did the self guided tour and there was lots of interesting information. The rooms of the castle are definitely worth seeing.
The castle cafe serves amazing cakes and very generous pots of tea.
It was a lovely sunny day and the grounds and garden of the castle are great to walk around. We sat for quite a while in the garden enjoying the sunshine.
Enjoyed our visit and would definitely go back again.

From the outside, Kilkenny Castle presents itself more as a stately palace than a traditional castle, holding beautifully manicured gardens that invite a leisure stroll. However, it's the inside that truly captivates visitors. The interiors transport you straight into a bygone era with incredibly well-preserved rooms adorned with authentic furniture, carpets, and art pieces. Every detail, from the doors to the roofs, narrates a rich history, offering a nostalgic trip back in time. A visit to Kilkenny Castle isn't just a tour; it's a rich, immersive journey through history that leaves you enchanted.

We booked a guided tour only €12 pp. The tour guide was great, so much interesting information, added to our experience. A beautiful castle set in glorious parkland. We went to the Tea Room, delicious homemade cakes. Well worth a visit.

Liked the architecture of the place. The paintings and tapestry were great.
Really enjoyed the tapestries just before the exit, those inspired from the French Bayeux Tapestry.
Loved the big hall, you MUST look at the ceiling and those statues hanging there. Beautiful!
Staff was nice and friendly.

The restorations they did on this castle is just amazing. The castle is beautiful as are the grounds surrounding the castle. Loved the stories from our guide John. Was super happy to see the pride flag flying high in the castle.

We did the self tour , a lot of posted information available. I'd agree with some of the other reviews the tapestries and the remnants of original wall coverings were my favourite . My husband's was the amazing Vikings style architecture used in the ceiling of the long room. I did not give 5 stars because it felt a too full up of non original furnitures and such in

Nice place for a day visit. Is very well maintained and provides a curious insight into the era bygone and the living of the wealthy.. Doesn't take much time to cover it, even for a very intent visitor 2-3 hours would be enough. Highlight for me was the tapestry section. They were really marvellous!!. However for the downside, they seriously need to work on the signage. It is not very clear anywhere where one is supposed to start the tour, move next and where it all ends!!. For a public place and an intricate building it is an absolute must.. I hope it is not their deliberate ploy to intice visitor's for opting a guided tour!!.. The garden outside is expansive, with play area for kids and very much suited for a nice stroll.. Though a few more flower beds will definitely give spruce up its character!!.. All in all definitely one time visit..

An absolutely beautiful location that is a must-see if visiting Kilkenny. The guided tour within the castle is rich with history and was quite informative. The preservation and decor are fantastic. Overall, it is worth a visit. The grounds are free to walk around, and there are options to purchase hot drinks and snacks inside the castle gates.

One of the hidden gems! For sure this is the most impressive castle I have been to in Ireland.

Kilkenny Castle, so much interesting history, worth reading up about it!
Today I just visited the grounds, but there is a tour that is well worth doing and a cafe and art gallery.
Great spot to bring the families and dog for walks, go down to the far corner and see the duck pond!

I had a lovely experience visiting the Kilkenny Castle. I opted for a self-guided tour and didn't feel like I missed out on anything since there is plenty of information by each display. The castle has been beautifully restored throughout the years, also offering facilities such as free lockers and clean toilets. I would definitely recommend a visit to the castle and its grounds when visiting Kilkenny.

Great history of Kilkenny and the castle. Well preserved and the QR codes really help to explain more than the signage can relay. The tea room makes for a nice little stop and snack.

Good tourist attraction in the city. Lots of history dating centuries ago. Castle is easy to navigate and surrounding areas around castle is big too. Well maintained and recommend people to visit here. We had pre booked the tickets and you can buy at the counter too. There are some guided toors for whom more interested in history but if people want they can explore themselves as well.

The Smithwick's Experience is an interactive guided tour of the brewery where visitors can learn about the history and production of Smithwick's Ale. The tour includes holographic projections, hands-on experience with old brewing equipment, and visits from passionate staff who have decades of experience working at the brewery.
Smithwick's is one of my absolute favorite Irish Beers. Many people will always go for Guinness, which is good, but for me I prefer Smithwick's. My wife booked a tour and surprised me with it last time we were in Dublin. Just a short couple hour bus drive and we were there. It was a really awesome tour. The tour guide had been working there for all his life, as a matter of fact his great grandfather started working here. He said that they really believe in hiring family (if they want to work there), and it has kept the tradition of their brewing style alive.
It is not as interactive as other brewery torus I have been on, but it is great to see some of the history of how they began and their brewing process.
I can say that has been a great thing since their beer is so great!

Great tour, fun nosing and tasting all the ingredients, absolute gem of a guide, Katie is indeed a cutie! Keep her going 😃. Superb ales, tried the red ale, pale ale and kilkennies (red ale with nitrogen). Had very good fun, avsolutely worth the visit and detour if you hadn't planned it.

My partner and I went to Kilkenny just for the day and we discovered this experience - we didnt know that Smithwick had such a thing. So we went there on a Saturday at 11am.
I have to say that Jorg, our tour guide, was exceptional! The tour was super interesting because he had that facility to explain and make it super interactive and fun!
The experience/museum is very tiny, however, the last room is super nice and unique since you can taste and smell the ingredients from the beer.
My partner had for his first time the creamy smithwicks and he loved it! We went to the store and we got like 6 cans since we can’t find it here in Dublin 🤣
Super recommended for 44€ and a super well done to Jorg - amazing tour guide! It wouldnt be the same without him for sure

It was a really nice tour. We paid for the guided tour and ended up with a group of 6 total. The guide was very personable and gave great info between the videos. I thought the tour itself was very well done, mixing the Smithwick’s fascinating family history with info about their brewing style/process. I’ve done a number of brewery tours and this is way less commercialized than Heineken and Guinness.
I absolutely recommend the extra €3 for the tasting pallet at the end of the tour. The pub after was pretty cute!

Awesome tour! Our tour guide, Darren, was full of information and answered all of our questions. He stayed around for the tasting and answered more questions. Highly recommend this tour!

Good tour although it's the first brew/distillery tour that I have been on where no operations are actually occuring. Kind of odd to see videos instead of actual happenings. The family history was very interesting. Our tour guide was extremely young and was very scripted

We paid €16 per adult online. This included a taster paddle with all three ales and I would highly recommended.
The standard price per adult is €15 for the experience (including one of three optional pints) , and the additional tasting is €3 when bought at the desk.
The tour was short but sufficient and packed with interesting history. Interactive and accommodating tour, with a knowledgeable guide. ( multiple language audio guides available). Seems to cater for wheelchair users also.

The place is beautifully refurbished and transformed to an "experience" compare to the past fully functional brewery. The venue itself is very beautiful but a bit too much of technology involved. It loses the sense of the real in some points.
It was Christmas Eve when we visited and you could say that our tour guide would rather be anywhere else that going around with tourists. Though, that made him to be honest and cut all the unnecessary marketing extras and be to the point. Very kindly and friendly answering anything he could and giving us a very authentic experience of the Irish hospitality without the cookie cutter corporate experience we had in Guinness factory in Dublin (same company group).
Of course they beer was amazing but I would stick with the ale, the rest wasn't something special to make me order them again.

The tour was fantastic! They clearly put a lot of effort into the presentation of the history of the Smithwick's brewery and family. Anna was a terrific guide and answered all of my questions. The lesson on the brewing process was quite comprehensive and interesting. This is one of the best brewery tours I have done. Highly recommended even if you already know your stuff.

Good fun. Adam was a jolly guide. Nothing overly spectacular but a grand way to spend an hour in Kilkenny.
When booking online they add €2 to each ticket for no apparent reason. Tried hard to find the reason for it but it wasn't documented anywhere. Ended up paying it but I would have rather kept the 6€ in my pocket instead of giving it to John Smithwick for no reason

I honestly can't say enough good things about the Smithwick's Experience after visiting Kilkenny! I see some reviews mentioning that they do not make Smithwick's on site any longer taking from the experience which is true but we found during our visit that it was very pleasant.
You will have to go to the car park but it is very close & convenient. When we first walked in to the experience they had an original cobble part that was really cool to see showing you the way it was back in the original days. Our guide was on time and professionally took us on the journey into the evolution of Smithwick's. The animated experiences were well done and had a nice balance on our tour with the guide taking us through some parts & movie/animated parts for others. We learned how the beer was made and then came the best part of the experience for me, we went to the end of the tour into the ingredients table. Here you actually get to see, feel, and if you want to taste the ingredients in the steps. I LOVED this part!! I didn't know what hops tasted like in its harvested form for example, but I do now! Put up all the displays you want, this makes the experience for me. For us this really made it cool after hearing the history and how they make it. While Guinness does own the brand now, I feel like this tour is much better than the Guinness tour giving a more personal feel on the guided tour so I'm glad they haven't mimicked what they have at the Storehouse tour.
At the end of the tour you end up at the bar for your pint or in my case flight which was very good. I didn't realize that the Kilkenny is essentially Smithwick's with nitro but it was great. It also wasn't crowded which was a pleasant experience for us to be able to talk, especially after the Guinness bar was unbelievably busy so another feather in the cap of the quieter more personal feel of it. You end up in the merch store after having your pint or two & they have some nice things to try out.
I highly recommend this one for a great experience. If I am ever in Ireland again I would divert myself here just to come back & enjoy this experience again. When asked about memorable experiences from our trip to Ireland this comes up every time already with me telling people to add Kilkenny & the Smithwick's experience to their trip. Kilkenny is a great place to visit & if you want an experience away from hustle and bustle this is a great place to go.
WI Biker — Google review
The experience was a great combination of fun and education. It was much more than images on a wall and lectures. We got to see, smell, and touch throughout the tour which resulted in interaction among fellow visitors. This made our time enjoying our pint at the end of the tour much more fun as different groups chatted, folks helped take group photos, and employees stopped by to chat.
Marnee H — Google review
Was a last minute add on to our day and so glad we did. This far exceeded our expectations. Buying tickets online is a bit cheaper than when there, but there was more than plenty available when we booked an hour before the tour started (was a weekday). There were only 5 other people on our tour and the tour guide was so fun and interactive. We did another big name brewery tour in Dublin and this one was so much more personable. Tasting at the end was great too. Be sure to ask any questions to the bartenders/staff, they seem to take pride in working there and are very knowledgeable. Of course you sort of have to get the obligatory red ale, however, don't skip on the kilkenny ale- delish.

I enjoyed the Smithwick's Experience more than the Guinness Tour (but then found out they're owned by the same people so...)
Either way, it was a great tour, and I highly recommend not missing it if you're visiting Ireland. The town of Kilkenny is worth a day of visiting itself. Our guide was fantastic, and you were able to have a more intimate experience than the Guinness tour. Plus, I really like red ales now! Make sure to reserve a few days in advance because they did sell out.

The Smithwicks experience is a great brewery tour which was one of best I have been on. I am slightly biased given Smithwick's is one of my favourite pints to drink, but besides that the knowledge and history being discussed will be interesting to any visitor. The tour even discussed some prominent Irish history and dates I was not so sure of myself!
The best thing of all is the quality of the staff all of which were very welcoming. Jorg did a fantastic job taking us through the tour and getting some laughs as well as keeping us fully engaged throughout. Once we got to the bar, we got speaking to Simon who had a very impressive knowledge of the industry which was really fascinating. Overall, it felt well worth the money and would definitely advise people to give it a go.

I'm home! And we got a free sample of a new beer they are testing. I liked it, but, of course, I won't be able to get in the States!
W. SC — Google review
Maybe I just don't get it but I've been on a lot of brewery tours and this is the first time I've been on a tour where there was no actual brewing going on and the machines were fake. Instead of seeing actual beer being made, there's an LCD screen with CGI beer. And the worst part is that this is expensive. I've been on others that were free. I don't know how this gets good reviews. The tour guide was good but this whole thing is a joke.
The Cathedral of St Canice, the second-largest in Ireland, was built 800 years ago and is still in regular use. The beautiful medieval landmark has been carefully restored over the years, and features ancient grave slabs and the tombs of Kilkenny Castle's Butler dynasty. The Round Tower next door provides stunning views of the city and surrounding countryside.
Beautifully restored piece of ancient history. The staff were very helpful. The tour is both the cathedral and tower. Beware of windy days. This is a church mostly where services are still held. The ancient tombs inside are amazing. Don't forget to look on the floor and up at the amazing roof

Beautiful Cathedral in a stunning old town.
This is a beautiful old cathedral. Not the grandest but inside and outside are delightfully pretty and the ancient stonework is in superb condition. It looks really neat with the tower which is interesting in itself and a good climb. The views from the top is great but not brilliant...you can see the city but it is pretty flat. Helpful staff and entry is 4€ to the cathedral and tower...that’s all I paid anyway.
My visit: 15th October 2018.

We didn't get to tour the inside off this cathedral as it was after hours. It was still worthwhile to visit as it makes a striking mythical appearance against the sky. The cemetery is original to the cathedral. There are many tombstones and crypts that have been erased due to wind and rain. One can imagine this as the setting for a Halloween backdrop.

A must see when in Limerick. They have self guided tour inside the church, so mucj to see and appreciate. They have robust history telling from the founding times.
Tickets are reasonable, and going up to the Tower is a way to get 360 view of the whole city and beyond. Staff were very nice, pleasant and conversant.

A medieval Cathedral that has been restored and is still used for worship. It's beautiful, tasteful and the audio tour was incredibly informative not only about the cathedral, but also about Kilkenny history.
I was unsure about doing an audio tour of an active worship space, but 10/10 recommend!! It's fascinating, and the self guided audio tour is top notch!
While you’re here if you’re not claustrophobic or scared of heights be sure to climb the tower. It was the highlight of our trip to Kilkenny…. And the thing I didn’t know or think I could do until I did it.
It’s basically several ladders… not as bad as I thought, but not for the faint of heart. View it worth it!
Lindsey C — Google review
The place is great, especially the stained glass windows.
A word of caution - climbing up the tower is not for the faint hearted. With steep narrow steps ( sometimes only one sided rails), it's a tough task to the top.

It's a must visit cathedral in Kilkenny :) Very warm in tone and romantic (dreamy) inside. The stain glasses and meticulous artwork inside makes it unique. It also comes with rich history which is worth listening to during the guided tour. We visited it yesterday with our American friends and they were delighted:)

The self-guided audio tour is very informative and the climbing the tower is worth it for the stunning views of Kilkenny. Only if you're able-bodied though as climbing the ladder takes a bit of an effort due to its steepness. The staff were friendly and helpful which made this visit pleasant and enjoyable. I had learnt a lot about the history of Kilkenny and the significance of this cathedral. A must visit in Kilkenny.

Where Kelkenny got its name. It's historically significant. It witnessed the war against Cromwellians and was turned abandoned once. There are many eggifies and tombstones covered everywhere inside the church revealing the story and ornaments, outfits back in medieval times.

Wonderfull place to visit, amazing stained glass windows and lots of internal carved figure tombs. You can light a candle and say a prayer 🙏.
Plenty to look at inside and out.
Also you can pay to walk up the tall tower for a view of the surounding town.5 euros.
And 5 euros to go inside the cathedral.

Well-preserved cathedral. A lot of information about its story is provided. For the brave there is also a nice but paid, view from the tower. All in all very nice, but not cheap. But if you like this kind of history stuff, it's totally worth it. For the climb onto the tower you need to be fit and free from giddiness.
The Black Abbey is a beautiful and historic catholic church in Ireland. The interior features an amazing stained glass east window, and the church also contains 10 carved stone coffins from the 13th and 14th century. The church is popular among tourists for its peaceful atmosphere, and it's also home to a small priory.
I really liked the black Abbey. Very striking stonework and the stained glass was beautiful.

This is a Catholic Priory of the Dominican Order that is dated back to 1225. The abbey is maintained so well that you will get to feel how this must have been used as a place of worship by the monks in the olden times even before the Kilkenny town became what it looks like today. The stained glass window, called as the rosary window is simply magnificent. There is a lot to see in this abbey that is significant from the past.

Colorfully Vibrant & Peaceful! Please don't let the name keep you from enjoying this oasis in the city. Really beautiful gardens. It was a lovely place to spend a few hours on a Sunday. I think next time we will bring a little picnic and spend more time. We found the walk fine but some parts might be a little steep if you have any difficulties. I would think there are still enough flat areas to make it enjoyable.
Easy to find benches for breastfeeding, we didn't need baby changing facilities but they are probably there. Unfortunately we didn't get to try the café but it looked lovely.

This castle is still an insiders´tip due to the fact that no photos are allowed to make of the interior rooms. This is understandable as the castle is still the place to live for the owners. We had a wonderful, interesting and long tour by Robert who did a great job. Unfortunately we did not have time to visit the huge gardens.

A properly beautiful place to take a walk. If you love trees then this is definitely a spot to visit. You need to slowly stroll about the grounds to fully take in the stunning beauty of it all. The awesome trees really make the place special.
There is a small fee to enter the main garden area.
There is also a tea garden with toilet facilities. Plenty of parking. We didn't tour the castle itself but will be back to do a guided tour in the future.
Highly recommend.

On our travels to Durrow sightseeing the Castle and church in the square, decided to walk to Bob's bar. Strolled in on a Monday night and not a sinner in the place. Had a pint of guinness and a few snacks and walked around the pub to see the different rooms, alot of different artifacts to view, it's a bar and a museum, they do have a few TV's dotted around, nice outdoor area beside the river and located on the main street close to all amenities. Belvedere House Gardens & Park is a stunning estate that features a Palladian-style villa from the 1700s and Victorian gardens with charming follies. The highlight of the park is Belvedere House, an enormous 18th-century hunting lodge designed by Richard Cassels, which overlooks Lough Ennell and boasts exquisite rococo plasterwork in its upper rooms.
We had a fab afternoon visiting Belvedere House and Gardens. The place was absolutely beautiful and so well maintained. The fairy garden was the best we have ever visited. The folly itself is very impressive, with the visitor centre and cafe built into the folly. The story behind its construction is the most interesting part, one angry brother blocking a view towards another angry brother's house (you can't choose your family!!) There is plenty to do once you're inside, tho note the house itself is closed for renovations. There are a series of walks of varying lengths. For smaller kids there is a decent playground, a fairy garden and a woodland swing (literally one swing down by the lake). The walk along by the lake is worth doing, some lovely views and it eventually loops back around to the walled garden, fairy garden and restaurant. The walled garden was possibly a bit run down, but note we visited in winter. A lot of the signs were fallen and broken etc. We finished up with a bite to eat in the cafe. Food was good.

We had a fantastic time shooting with a beautiful couple in the midst of a serene forest and sparkling lake on a crisp, cold day just a few days before Christmas. The scenery was breathtaking and the couple's love for each other shone through in every moment. It was such a joy to be able to capture these special memories for them to cherish forever. It truly felt like a winter wonderland and we couldn't have asked for a more perfect setting for this photoshoot.

It's a beautiful place to visit for nature lovers... Loads of walking to do and can take up to 2 to 3 hours to fully explore the place. 23 euros for a family of 4 which I felt is worth. The horticulture area mainly pertaining to the plants were well kept but the water bodies require a little more attention. I was amazed at the collection of beautiful flowers they had in. The fairy garden was cute but was small. We were there by 0430pm, but there were unusually tonnes of tiny flies which I was afraid would hit our eyes or nose. Absolutely loved the place, however was disappointed that the Belvedere house and cafeteria closes by 5pm even when the whole premises stays open until 8pm for the season.

Belvedere House and Gardens is the most magical of places. Beautiful walks along the lakeside in summer and the nicest place to view autumn leaves in a woodland setting. The house itself is very interesting and it has a lovely cafe attached for breakfast / lunch. Well worth the visit!

Had a delightful experience walking the grounds, the park and the house itself. It's an oasis of calm and serenity. You will fall in love with the beauty of nature and don't leave without a taste of the sumptuous food at the indoor Café. The girls were welcoming and service was superb. I loved every minute!

Nice place for a walk, picnic or family time. Adequate parking spots. There is a cafe inside, washrooms and children's play area inside the visitor centre. We went for family picnic with friends at the start of Feb so the garden wasn't blooming.
For me it is not worth a second visit when you have to pay 23 euros as a family entry fee, only for the sake of just the above!

We took a walk through the beautiful grounds and garden at Belvedere today in the spring sunshine. It's a peaceful and very impressive place to take a walk, enjoy beautiful lake views, tour the house and enjoy the gardens. There is also a cafe, bathrooms and other facilities.

I'm a sucker for estates and their garden parks. Even if it's raining, I love to wander around. My favourite were the walled garden and the octagon "teahouse". But I enjoyed the little stream that ends in the loch as well

Nice area for a walk around, Good amount of space - would be especially nice in the spring and Summer months. Interesting to read about and see the jealous wall. The house itself is under repair, so there is a slight reduction in cost (€7). There's a cafe there in the entry area which is nice for grabbing a coffee for the walk.

Beautiful garden. Few walking tracks. Ample parking space . Good food at cafeteria. Spectacular view of Lough ennel. Unfortunately the main house was closed for renovations. Play area and fairy garden for children. And Mollie moo's pet farm is nearby if looking for extra activities for kids

Amazing place rich in nature and peace. Great spot for a family getaway with nice garden and beautiful lake view and pleasant streams. Lot of trails to cover. The house is full of history and the wall of jealousy is a real folly. The fairy garden is a hit with my kid. Absolutely delightful to visit, highly recommend. The cafe is amazing as well. Parking is spacious.
The Tullamore D.E.W. Distillery Visitor Experience is housed in a 19th-century warehouse and offers tasting tours, a restaurant, and a bar. The brand's whiskey has gained global recognition since its establishment in 1829, with the initials D.E.W. representing Daniel E. Williams, the distillery's former general manager.
A great way to pass a few hours, this is a beautiful visitor centre wore a great retail shop with lots of merchandise, there is also a restaurant on site with a delicious selection from small bites to a proper lunch. There are a number of various tours available do a little research before you get there, staff are very friendly and helpful and make you feel welcome. I really enjoyed the your and got yo taste some really great Irish Whiskey at the end.

We had a fantastic time on the tour today with the very pleasant and knowledgeable guide Michele & Alan our driver. The Irish coffee at the beginning of the tour was a great way to relax into the experience. Michele was very engaging and had an instant rapport with our group. We loved everything about the tour but the drink in the snug hidden among the caskets was the highlight for us. We would highly recommend the tour. Sláinte!

My father and I really enjoyed the distillery tour.
It is a beautiful distillery, and the staff were very welcoming and delightful on the tour.
Our tour was led by Vivienne and Ray. They were very knowledgeable and Vivienne made a wonderful Irish Coffee. The walk through the still house gives a good view of the process with a great bready smell of the wart and brewing process. We then rode to the warehouses and were able to enter one and get that wonderful smell of maturing whiskey from the casks through evaporation, or "The Angeles Share". Then back to the production building for a tasting / blending of 3 expressions of Tullamore D.E.W.
I highly recommend a tour of the Tullamore D.E.W distillery and the nice store there on site.
Thank you for a wonderful experience Vivienne and Ray.

Tullamore DEW Masterclass was a brilliant 90 minute introduction to Whiskey and what sets Tullamore apart from the others. Our guide, Toni, delivered all the information in a way we could all relate. The tour started from raw ingredients all the way up to maturation and tasting. Begrudgingly I was designated driver so my partner had 2x 6 tasting paddles, all delicious. I'm keen to go back for more of the tour and for more whiskeys not available on the shelf.
Ali Lloyd — Google review
Probably one if the greatest tours I have ever tried. The Tullamore DEW distillery experience tour is clearly focused on delivering the best experience for the visitors rather than making money from it.
The tour started with a correctly prepared Irish coffee and then travelling around the destillery and grounds also having several samples of their whisky.
The tour guide was very knowledgable, nice, and helpful. Big praise to her.
The tour groups consist of a maximum of eight people, which is really great - having too large groups can sometimes lead to worse tours. Hence, eight people is great.
The tour took roughly two hours.

Amazing visit to the distillery! We took the 100 minute tour and it was worth every penny of 39€ a piece. I have been to many distilleries and taken the tour but this one was tops. From enjoying an Irish coffee with our incredible tour guide, Ita, and listening to her tell the history of Tullamore DEW and how they make their blended whiskey, to going into the distillery itself and then on to the warehouse full of whiskey barrels, it felt like you were part of the family listening to an old friend talk about the family business. Solomon was our driver for the tour outside and he took care of everything for us. If you are in Dublin, take the 90 minute ride out to Tullamore. The town is wonderful to walk, and you will not be disappointed with the experience at the distillery. Highly recommend!!

Very nice tour and tasting. Quite a good deal at €39. You get a lot in the package, and the tour guide we had, Antoinette, was fantastic and quite knowledgeable. The historical aspect was neat, even though the distillery itself is pretty new, the tour was well steeped in history.

Very interesting visit. We got lots of information from our lovely guide Daria who really masters the subject, makes a delicious Irish coffee at the beginning, speaks a very understandable English (for non-native visitors) and is dynamic and funny. The venue is beautiful and well organized to receive the tour.

If you like Jameson, do yourself a favor and try this distillery. From the states, I hadn't tried it before and fell in love. The tour was incredibly informative and the flights are perfect for sampling. We did the cheapest option and got three. You can choose the high end to get six. They also have a €150+ option that (I believe) shows their production. As a side note - Sundays are sometimes the busiest. Long live the city of Tullamore and DEW.

Definitely the best distillery tour I've ever taken. (Although also the most expensive at 35€.) Our cozy group of 7 allowed us all to hear our fantastic guide Antoinette as she brought alive the story of Irish whiskey, and Tullamore's place in it. A masterful tale weaver, she spiritedly informed, entertained and painted a picture as she prepared a traditional Irish coffee and led us through the beautiful facilities. The tour lasted nearly 2 hours, and connected the "alchemy" of distillation with the "sacred" of maturation. At the noteworthy gift shop, you can top off your experience, by blending your own unique Tullamore bottle with variations on grain, malt and pot-stilled whiskeys (for 75€.) You can also enjoy a complimentary espresso or tea. #TullyTours

Brian was our guide and the tour was the last of the day. Considering he was relatively new, he was very knowledgeable, enthusiastic and entertaining throughout the tour. The facilities are superb and everything is explained well without becoming too technical which some may or may not like. Lots of tastings included so good value for money. Recommended!

This was a great tour! Finley, the tour guide and Will was the driver on account of the rain. Both friendly people. Finley was very knowledgeable on the history of Irish whiskeys and had a lovely sense of humor about him.
I do know there are right ways and wrongs ways to make a drink, but his Irish coffee was top-notch! My 1st coffee was in Shannon, and it was just straight hot whiskey.
As far as the warehouse and the tasting room. I really enjoyed it. I've been to a few distilleries in the States as far as whiskey, bourbon, and beer go. This distillery is one of the nicer places!
10/10 Finley was absolutely great, and thanks, Will, for driving!
Took a couple of souvenirs home for further tasting and comparative analysis

It’s only taken a month to share , but a highlight of my trip to Ireland was visiting the Tullamore D.E.W. Distillery. Michelle and Solomon were fantastic guides and I learned a lot.
The nerd in me loved the history, the science, and the lessons. The drinker in me loved the tastes, the smells, and the varieties to sample. Their gift shop loved my wallet.
I want to stress that all rules were followed and a certain photo was taken from the outside, not in.
Thank you Tully!

By far this is the best distillery tour we've ever been on. From the minute you walk in, you're welcomed with an Irish coffee that they make right in front of you while you're sitting in comfy dining chairs. You then move to the more comfortable couches, with your Irish coffee, where they go through the process of distilling before you start the walking tour through the whiskey barrel storage warehouse then ending at a bar with some tastings and more educational info about the whiskey. They then walk you to the shop where you can purchase whiskey, merchandise and even make your own blend. It was a super fun experience and I recommend it to anyone going to Ireland. It is well worth the $40. Our guides Daria and Richie were fantastic. Daria was super knowledgeable about the distilling process and the whiskey itself and Richie made the delicious Irish coffee. Highly recommend! Purchase your tickets in advance as the group size is small, which makes more intimate and enjoyable.

One of the best distillery tours I’ve been on. Get a walkthrough of the whole process and see all of the equipment actually in use (including seeing the warehouse full of aging barrels!). Had tour guides Richie and Ray and we learned a great deal from them; I feel like I can talk intelligently about whisky now and actually understand what all the words mean. I can’t recommend enough, excellent value.

Took the train from Dublin to tullamore. Taxi from the station to the distillery. Was a little disappointed to find all the tour slots booked for the day…but there’s a shorter tasting tour which we managed to get into. Costs $20 euro each takes around 30 mins and you get to sample 3 of their whiskies. Our guide was Richie and he was fantastic. Very informative and friendly. In fact the all the staff were great. Even offered us complimentary tea n coffee whilst we waited!
It’s also possible to buy some extra tasting samples too. The 18 year old single malt and the Honey are well worth the extra euros!
Highly recommended.

Even though this is a fairly new facility, the tour was very thorough in a relaxing atmosphere. Let's just say the first part of the tour was about the education of whiskey making while lounging on couches with a custom made authentic Irish coffee. This was our favorite distillery tour in Ireland

What an experience, learned quite a bit! The experience and sights of such an establishment was breathtaking to say the least. ITA is one of the most intelligent and charming human beings we have ever met, she was a lovely tour guide and we can't thank her enough for our tour and her knowledge. Thank you for a once in a lifetime experience.
Defunct distillery restored as a museum of whiskey history, with much old machinery on display.
What an amazing tour, distillery and place overall! Our tour guide explained everything and answered all of our questions. The old distillery makes you travel back in time, it's kinda magical. I didn't try the whiskey but my partner did and he said it was delicious! Highly recommended!

Seriously Enjoyable.
Distillers Cask Bottling really quite unique. I am no connoisseur, but this experience was so rewarding. The enthusiasm from the member of staff was so infectious . From the word go I was made by to feel so welcome, which I really appreciated. Deirdre continued in this vein and made for a very very pleasant and enjoyable time. Of course the whiskey is exceptional, but (and this is my second visit to the distillery) to me the wonderful staff do make for one of Ireland’s absolute gems!

Caveat:
The date of the tour ended up being a bank holiday hence last production was a week before Xmas. No new brewing took place.
The tour guide was brilliant. While the tour did not drink whiskey she did her best to provide an great experience.
Being the oldest brewery is already worth a visit. The watermill are still operational. I have been told the Steam generator also works but did not see it.
The tour overall is 1 hour with no rush. Friendly atmosphere where whiskey tasting can be enjoyed.
Definitely worth a visit.

Absolutely worth it. The tour is very interesting and the guide was quite friendly and knowledgeable.
The tasting at the end is great, as expected, and you can ask for the “driver experience” meaning you’ll take home all samples in tiny bottles so you can try them later, which was a nice surprise. We also got to take a small glass home. They have a nice shop so you can take your favorite whiskey home, plus their bar is quite cozy. Amazing experience :)

A working distillery with a fascinating history, making great whiskey. Michael, a local lad with “tuns” of knowledge, made the visit far more worthwhile with a tasting at the end. The tour is a must, with a wee drop. If you can’t drink at the end of the tour, they can put the samples in little bottles for you to enjoy later. 😄

The visitor centre is quite big, with a lot to see and take in. Also can sit down and have a some refreshments, and a shop.
All in all a good morning drinking whiskey and learning some history.

The tour is interesting, the process of creating the whiskey is explained well, and there are opportunities to try alcohol at the beginning and the end. It is a pity that the old machinery isn't in use, and that the distillery there only makes a tiny fraction of the companies output.
Still very worth visiting especially if you like peated whiskey.

As visitor centre tours go this was a compact but informative tour. There's plenty of history here which was well explained by our tour guide. Tour finished with a lovely taster session and a free gift of a kilbeggan water jug. For those driving you can opt out of the taster session and get a driver pack which allows you to taste at home a great idea. The gift shop is well stocked with plenty of kilbeggans products. Give yourself time to browse even take time to enjoy the coffee shop. All in all lots on offer.

When we visited Ireland we had a goal of visiting as many distilleries as possible. The Kilbeggan Distillery was on our list of stops and it was great. They offer tours and have a shop to purchase any of their signature whiskeys. Between our group we bought 6 bottles after tastings because their whiskey is fantastic. A must stop for original Irish whiskey.

It's worth a visit to see how whiskey was made in the old days. Having said that, tasting was average and should at least only include whiskeys of the Distillery rather than from other distilleries owned by the same company...
Leap Castle in Ireland is a 16th-century fortress that has a violent and tragic past, which many believe has left it haunted. While the castle may appear small on the inside due to its abundance of tables and gadgets, visitors should not miss the opportunity to explore the top floor for a breathtaking view and a visit to the first-floor bedroom. The castle's tour guide, Shawn, is known for sharing all of its stories with visitors.
Was lovely to chat with the current custodian, who has been lovingly restoring this castle since the 90s. The views from the top are impressive. And lovely to see a castle mid restoration.

When you visit, park infront of the castle and ring the door. You'll be given a history of the castle and invited to check out the bloody abbey on top. Make sure to look for the original oubliette in the back right corner!

Looks like I've missed a whole spooky part of the castle. Went there - couldnt find a parking - no need to - as the only parking is the one in front of the castle - you need to drive to the front doors of the castle. There is the Shawn that everyone is writing about . He tells all of the castle stories, lets you go up and see the view from the top floor. Awesome sight. He also encourages you to visit the first floor - a nice bedroom. The castle inside seems to be very small as most of the place is taken by the tables. And a whole lot of gadgets you can put anywhere. But overall i think it is worth of your visit.

Sean is an amazing tour guide! He let us into his castle to tour freely on our own while making sure any questions we had were answered. The amount of history this man knows about the castle is amazing. The decor in the castle is straight out of a story book. The tour is so personable and is 100% a hidden gem. A must see in Ireland. Leap Castle is a private residence. Open Monday-Saturday, 10am - 5pm. I emailed the owner- Mr. Sean Ryan, as a courtesy before arriving. Mr. Ryan was very welcoming and relaxed. He gave us the freedom to wander about the great hall, conservatory, and upper floors - including the Bloody Chapel at the top of the tower. Mr. Ryan is a person very much interested in the history of his Castle, but he is also politely inquisitive of his guests. He asked me questions about my visit to Ireland, and my ancestry. It was a pleasant chat. It was my understanding, prior to our visitation, that Leap Castle has a reputation of being haunted. My husband and I were not particularly seeking an experience, but we did in fact have one. This is certainly a singular residence. I cannot compare it to anything I have seen before. If you enjoy the strange, dark, or mysterious on a subtle scale, then I believe Leap Castle should be on your travel list.

The Corlea Trackway Visitor Centre showcases the impressive Iron Age bog road, dating back to 148 BC. The preserved 18m oak track is displayed in a humidified hall, offering insight into the unique flora and fauna of the bog as well as preservation methods. Visitors can enjoy an informative tour and a lovely 5km walk around the site.
I visited on the 1st of November just before the centre closed for the Winter. A very knowledgeable staff member greeted me early morning just as they were opening. It is an interesting site that has been on my list to visit for a while and so finally I was able to stop by! The story of the discovery and preservation of the timber trackway is fascinating and most of this timeline is shown on a short film in a cinema room on site. Access to the trackway is via the main hall and I to another dedicated room. It was incredible to see. The guide who took me in was helpful, knowledgeable and through, 5* experience overall and very pleased to have been able to see this whilst in the area,!

As is it is a budding archeologists dream. A rough diamond that just needs some polishing.

Great place to visit. Very kind staff and very good information tour. Maria is very good explaining what this great wooden path could be. Here you have a complete section of a wooden path from the iron age dating around 148 BC. It is made of wood because crosses fields of turf. No one knows exactly the reasons why it was built and there still another section buried on the turf.
A place I recommend to visit

Fabulous castle and grounds. 10 per adult entry with concessions for kids and seniors. The telescope from the 1840s is extraordinary. The grounds are fantastic with a river, deep moat around the castle, a lake with swans and ducks. Very beautiful place. Great science museum also and the grounds are the site of part of the biggest radio telescope in the world.

The science museum is worth the visit alone to learn about the telescope and the family who got behind it.
I dig Steampunk which this all about.
Beautiful grounds to walk around in and plenty of places to stop for a picnic...don't litter so bring your leftovers with you.
Great afternoon out.

Birr Castle Demesne is absolutely beautiful. The grounds are very well kept and the scenery is just breathtaking.
Have a look at the photos I took, you can see for yourself.
Beautiful place for a family day out, plenty of exploring to do and plenty of things to see. A great place for anyone interested in photography too.

Birr Castle was lovely , not to hot , didn't walk the whole perimeter as 7mths pregnant, but saw all the main things. Beautiful grounds of mature trees. Great open space for families , you can't go into castle as their is people living there.
Only negative lift wasn't working day we were there in science exhibition, but look these things happen.

We were sceptical to visit since there were one star reviews but the almost 2 hour drive was well worth it.
One of the best walks we've had, with interesting sights and a very well looked after garden full of history.
This place is just beautiful...
Not the last time we'll visit.

The castle and the territory around is really lovely. We parked at the Oxmantown mall onstreet parking, which was free. We spent around three hours there, it was a great walk, the gardens and the greenhouse was beautiful.

Absolutely brilliant place for a day out, but you will need a full day, if you want to see it all. Birr Castle is stunning, although it is lived in, so not allowed inside.
The grounds are beautiful and the formal gardens are amazing! There are two stunning walks, both of which are accessible to all levels of fitness. There's a lake with swans and numerous birds and other wildlife , including red squirrels.
Children will have lots of fun in the playground area which has a huge tree house. There is a cafe with indoor and outdoor seating (weather permitting) and toilets on site for your convenience.
I can't wait to go back!

Went on cold November. €11 entrance fee, bit too much. If you'll be after an hour of stroll, this would be a good option. Its an open ground with trees and garden. I guess ull see the beauty of it during summer. Im jz not sure if ill be back and happy to pay €11 again jz for a stroll. The castle itself is private, u cant go the the castle grounds either. Parking is by the council across the road, make sure to bring €2 coins, no tap/wave card.

What an amazing place to take an hour or more stroll. Lots of different sceneries and you can decide what section of the place you want to visit first however you like. We were here the first week of December and thankfully the weather got better in the afternoon and we managed to see all the attractions here. Note that you can only see the castle from the outside because it's privately owned.
I suggest alotting at least 2 hours to visit this place.

A fantastic place to visit, while you cant access the castle as it is a residence the enormous garden and grounds are stunning and well worth spending a few hours in. With over 100 acres you will easily get lost in the many wonderful areas and also the fascinating history behind the precious owners with one of the largest telescopes of its time located in the garden.

Athlone Castle is a 13th-century fortress situated by the River Shannon and features eight interactive exhibition rooms with chronological themes. The castle showcases modern and engaging displays that depict the town's turbulent history and its evolution through time. The highlight of the castle is Siege Experience, which takes place in a circular panoramic gallery. The Normans built this castle in 1210 after asserting their power over Athlone's ancient river ford, which played an essential role as a crossroad on the Shannon.
With the staff being well informed about both Irish and Scottish history, proved the information centre to be really informative. As a traveler, it’s always good to find recommendations of local places that Google may not tell you about. This tourism centre was easy to find and it’s part of the Adamson Castle.
You are greeted warmly by friendly staff and they’ll ask you a little bit about why you’re visiting, they can give you the right information as long as you ask.
If you didn’t know, they also have self-guided tours inside the Athlone Tourist Information Centre, if you’re trying to waste a little extra time for your flight, also assuming you’re interested in seeing the remains of the Adamson Castle that was built in the 12th century.

Very interesting place, small museum, I set 4 stars, just because of several rooms and attentions have been closed, and also in was not for free as others do in during pandemic, overall I really recommend to visit, it can be also not better then Bunratty castle, but anyway good enough

A wonderful way to get an overview of Athlone’s history. As a rule I don’t really like interactive exhibits but found those in the castle enthralling. I recommend making it your first stop in the city. I believe another reviewer criticized the mannequins but I think they are brilliantly made and have a fantastic theatrical feel. Well worth seeing!

It looked good from the outside then it was dearer than Kilkenny castle so I didn't go in
I don't know how you can price something in Athlone higher than Kilkenny

Very nice to visit. Interactive stuff for kids, plenty of interesting artefacts, costumes, to see Video presentation of history of castle. Nice views of city from the ramparts. Very good value for 10 euro per adult.

Amazing place! Plenty of interactive stuff to do, which is fun for adults too.
One of the tour guides showed us some hidden gems, and even recommended a (free) exhibition (just across from the castle)
Clonmacnoise is a ruined monastery in Ireland that was founded in the 6th century by St. Ciaran. Located next to the River Shannon, Clonmacnoise was once a thriving Christian monastery and served as a center for learning in Ireland. Today, Clonmacnoise is a beautiful and atmospheric ruin filled with stone ruins from centuries of monastic life.
Awesome place to visit. Lovely visitor centre and film to watch. Grounds are stunning (you can explore at will) and you can walk down to the River Shannon jetty where visitors arrive by boat and moor up to visit. I can highly recommend this place for a wonderful peaceful and thought provoking experience. There is a shop and usual facilities. Welcoming and helpful staff too.
Joy Atkins — Google review
First time here in years. We took a notion and came to visit on a beautiful summer day. The ruins are beautifully preserved and there is plenty of information inside about the area.
I also appreciate the staff telling us to pay as a group as it saved us €2 apiece. That kind of customer service deserves a mention.
I would give it 3.5 stars if that were an option. Some small points are lost with me because I feel it is a little lacking for a visitor centre with overheads. (Please don't let it dissuade you, it's just a personal feeling).
The main let down for me was I had hoped the offering in terms of entertainment could be a little stronger. It is a remarkable space to walk through and explore. Nearby there is the ruin of the castle and gorgeous views of the water. It was spectacular to swim in.
But the water offering is outside the centre and I just felt there could be something extra for visitors to make the place stand out a little more.
Still well worth a visit, especially if you are a history nerd like yours truly

A haunting, beautiful, historic location. Visit first thing in morning or last hour of the day, I was there for when it opened on a day with heavy bursts of rain. When I was ready to leave about 90 minutes after I arrived the serenity was disrupted by the amount of people walking around. There is a small museum where the original crosses are preserved with a good chunk or reading on the history and a room that plays a movie of this type of information on a loop. The staff are friendly and welcoming. Pay the entry fee to help the site run, don't be a tightwad and walk round to the cemetery and enter from the gate there. Use this route after paying to walk less than 500m to the Nun's Church up the lane.
The car park is not the biggest and looks like it could get full on a busy day. Good restrooms inside the site. Outside of the site, ruins and view, there is not a lot more, this is a focused visit for history and beauty.
The shop / cafe that is in the car park area (and not part of the historic site) is well meaning, yet not great. Stuffed full of tourist tat, expensive and the coffee is self service from a machine. If you need refreshments head to nearby Shannonbridge e.g. Shannonbridge Fort & Cafe (has a car park) or the other side of the bridge, The Hatch & Co.

Fabulous 6th century ruined monastery near the River Shannon. I would recommend arriving when they open or before 10:45am to avoid the arrival of the tour buses! It will become very crowded after 11:00am.

From my point of view most impressive Cloisture and Abbey complex in Ireland. The whole area is directly above the river of Shannon. Very nice Museum with excellent explanations and markings. Clean Toilette inside the Museum or outside in the Café. There is a large Parking area above the area. You can reach the Area via Car, bike or Ship. Excellent ship parking area before Clonmacnoise. Tickets can be purchased on site.

Much the same as every other similar place, nice to see, but not if you've to go out of your way to visit
Friendly staff
The video is helpful to give you the history of the site and helps when going out to look at the ruins etc
Pity there was work going on and no cafe etc at nothing even near it (and it was cold as we visited in November)
Could do with a sympathetic stone or that walk way rather than trying to walk on grass and unfortunately some graves under grass

Gorgeous old abbey grounds right on the Shannon. Could easily spend an hour or two just exploring.
Gabe Wright — Google review
As an Irishman, it is our monuments, such as these at Clonmacnoise, that instill in me a deep sense of, not only my own history, but the history of every Irish person worldwide. I would advise a brief Google search of the ruins before visiting to get a deeper understanding. There is a short explanatory movie included in the entrance price, and a wonderful display of Celtic Cross stone carving. Located in a beautiful setting with the 40 shades of green jumping out at you, this, and the Spirit of the Christian Gael rising from the ground and puncturing your soul, let's you know that this is the real deal. THIS IS IRELAND. Expertly maintained. Bualadh Bos to all concerned.
Toilets on scene and a coffee/ souvenir shop nearby. Free Parking.

We called Charlie and Bridie if we could come and see their museum. They opened the doors for us even though we came along when it was not officially open. The two of them are so lovely and explain to you everything you wanna know about the wonderful objects which have been collected over the years. I felt like I was on a journey back in time. I like nostalgia so I love places where you can dream away in phantasies about how evereything must have been in former times. We liked the fact that it was such a rural area and a lot of stuff which has been typical for rural areas. I really recommend to see that place and meet that lovely couple. Plan at least on hour for your stay. There is so much to see and you can sense how much love they have given into the collecting and the arrangements of the objects....

This is an unexpected gem that has been created with a lot of love for preserving history. The time and effort put in the restoration and the curation of items is evident. The curator was lovely and helped bring all the items to life for us, having grown up in the community. It was a wonderfully nostalgic place for me and interesting, curious, and fun for my young teens.
The National Famine Museum, Strokestown Park, offers guided tours of a Georgian Palladian mansion, walled garden, and museum focusing on the 1840s famine. The mansion was commissioned in the early 18th century and is surrounded by gardens that reflect the estate's original wealth. The museum is well-designed and includes a memorial center. Visitors can take guided tours or explore independently with amenities such as a cafe/restaurant, souvenir section, and parking facilities available.
The Park's House has been opened after an extensive refurbishment and it's spectacular.
The fairy woodland walk and Victorian Gardens are a treat too.
The House now also boasts a cafe and gift shop with the entrance akin to that of a five star hotel. The staff are courteous, knowledgeable and extremely accommodating for families.
Can't wait to go back again.

We visited the famine museum and the grounds. The museum is informative and well worth a visit. The audio guides are useful and included in the admission price.
(I'd say the museum is not really suitable for young children - there are darkened rooms and lots of detail to read or listen to.)
Outside, the gardens have the potential to be lovely, but at present some parts are very overgrown and filled with weeds.

Did the Easter hunt in the gardens.
The new visitors centre is very well upgraded and the coffee shop was well stocked and reasonably priced. Coffee and cakes were very nice. One of the party had soup and a toastie, simple and tasty.
The gardens are in the winter phase. Need a lot of attention.
I look forward to coming back and seeing the gardens in the summer and visiting the famine museum.

Heartbreaking but what an excellent experience 👏 , your tour is self-lead around the museum with a handy audio guide that you link with a numbered trail. Found it emotional but we can only learn from the pass . It has a great wee café and gift shop , might consider becoming a member of the IHT as only €40 / €47 per annum PP which is not only a great saving but your contribution helps the up keep of these old buildings .

National Famine Museum was very informative about the famine (as the name suggests) and its effects on the country and its population.
Strokestown House had an hours long tour available at 12, 2, 4. The history of the 300 years old and its owners was brought to life by the guide.
A great day out with walks, walled gardens included.
RRB — Google review
The national famine museum is located in the grounds of Strokestown Park House but I will review both separately. It stated on the website that parking was plentiful but we had to park on the grass verge as there was so many visitors. We went on October 1st and a fate was on with stalls, vintage cars and other things which would explain the large crowds. The visitor centre is clean and spacious but it was a 20 minute queue waiting to purchase tickets. The staff seemed overwhelmed and waiting times for everything were huge especially the cafe at 30 minutes plus. We paid €39 for a family ticket which included a tour of the house. If we didn’t want the tour we would have paid €31 for the museum and gardens. To be honest it was okay. A lot of letters and interactive things which was nice but failed to grab the attention of my 11 year old anyway. The museum directed you towards the forest walk and the walled garden. The forest walk was a huge let down and the walled garden was nice but nothing I would call amazing. If you’re visiting the museum I would suggest getting the house tour which I found the best bit by far. I will review that separately. I would recommend a visit if you find yourself in Co. Roscommon with nothing to do.
Thomas Clarke — Google review
This was a great way to better understand the background of the Irish famine. Not only do you get a the facts of what happened, you get it in the context of a wonderful museum, manor house, and grounds, which all combine to help inform you of the great tragedy that unfolded. So many things combined to create the actual suffering of the people, and a bit of mysterious murder helped increase my interest and understanding.
Btw, the ground are pretty wheelchair friendly, though the upper story of the manor house is limited to just stairs. Regardless, it was a great place to visit!
Allen Wickham — Google review
We never knew this place existed before now and decided to visit on Sunday. We also didn't know there was a vintage fair day on until we arrived. It was hard to find parking, and most people were parking in the grass verge of the driveway ( I say it was the day that was in it). We were in a party of 3, 2 adults and 1 child, so we got a family ticket for the museum and the house tour @ €39. There was a long queue at the ticket desk with only 1 person working. There was only 1 tour happening that day because of the fair, and that was at 4pm. So we had over 2 hours before the tour. The museum was very nicely laid out and had lots of different features. I think we were supposed to get an audio player when we paid, but it wasn't offered, so you didn't really get the full grasp of the museum. The fair day was good, and the old games were great fun.
We decided to get a coffee at the cafe, there were about 7 people in front of us and 3 staff behind the counter. 20 mins later, and the queue barely moved, I grabbed cold drinks out of the fridge and went up to the till skipping the queue. A better system is needed here. Again, I say it was busier than they expected. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. The forest walk is just that, a small walk with a few benches if you wanted to sit ( they could have cleared the fallen leaves off the benches that morning, as all them where covered and wet). The walled gardens were lovely, I wished we had more time in them, but we had to run for the house tour. The house tour was by far the highlight, and the guy giving the tour was great, friendly, and he had a great easy and love for what he was telling us. There ares a few things this place could improve on, just small touches, no soap in the bathroom when we arrived or when we were leaving. A better system in the cafe and make sure everyone is offered headsets. But overall, we were glad we popped in.

This Norman keep was built around 1200 and it’s over 30 metres high. The crown of crenellations (Buildings with defensive architecture often have gaps which were implemented to allow the launch of arrows or other projectiles from within; these gaps are called ‘crenels’) and the ring of clerestory windows were later added in 1861.
What is really interesting is that you enter this castle for free. You just walk in and climb the first set of wooden stairs until you reach the first floor filled with lots of information about the castle. Then you climb stairs made out of stone, which are way more uncomfortable but also way more interesting. The second floor seemed to have been the public hall of the keep, with a destroyed fireplace made out of sandstone. The third floor is the last room on the inside before you reach the top. Be careful here, the wind can be quite strong here, but the view really is stunning!
I am so glad that I had the chance to see this castle again and to tell you a bit more about it. If you’re in the area, stop there and climb these old stairs! I can definitely only recommend Nenagh and the castle here!

Portumna Castle, originally built in 1618 by the 4th Earl of Clanricarde, is a Jacobean-style fortified house with Renaissance-style towers and gates. The castle still retains its formal appearance with its geometric courtyard and colorful garden maze known as the willow maze.
Absolutely loved this place. Cannot believe in all my years bringing my family hiking in Portumna Forest that we never visited the castle ground before. Well worth a visit, plenty to see and do and the herb gardens are amazing! Lovely tea rooms and clean toilets for that all-important cuppa on the go.

We really enjoyed the flower garden. Very lovely. The self guided walk in the house was very informative. Nice coffee shop with plenty of seats. Abbey that you can visit too.

In 2023, it was finally time to explore Portumna Castle in county Galway, Ireland. This castle was built around 400 years ago by the de Burgo (Burke) family and it offers the castle, a café, a walled garden and an indoor exhibition.
You can best reach this castle by car and park close to the park’s entrance where you can already spot the ruins of Portumna Friary. You can freely access those and explore them to your heart’s content!
When you then walk onwards this path for a bit, you reach the castle grounds with toilets and a café located in the courtyard buildings. When the weather’s nice, this is a lovely place to sit, from where you can already see parts of the castle itself.
For 5€, you can then also head into the castle and the gardens. Inside the castle, there’s an exhibition on the ground floor bringing the story of the castle and the de Burgo family to life.
The most interesting part about this area, however, truly are the gardens! There are formal, geometrically-laid gardens to the north, which definitely make for some great photos!

Lovely historic building. The guides are lovely and give a very interesting explanation of the castle's back story. There is also a cafe to buy food. There are toilets onsite near the eatery as well. Worth visiting.

Interesting historical castle/manor with nice gardens. There are some information plaques but only a small part of the castle is currently accessible as it is still being renovated, although this appears to be reflected in the relatively cheap entry price (€5 as of July 2022). You can also visit the nearby priory ruins.

Wonderful castle, very well-maintained with great history. They have a video exhibition available inside the castle with great information. The castle staff is also very helpful if you want more information about the castle history. The gardens are also well-preserved with various fruits. On the day we visited, there was a photo exhibition on the lawn. A very enjoyable excursion that is worth doing.

Amazing gem in Portumna! We had arrived by a cruiser and it was amazing surprise to be around in the corner from the Castle and Gardens.
The cafe was open early with tea/coffee, croissants/sausage rolls etc.
Gardens are beautifully kept, don't miss the Kitchen Garden too! It is all free, you can get a free tour of part of the Castle by such friendly tour guides.
There were beautiful photography displayed in the gardens too ☺️ Definitely recommend.

A must see if you're in Portumna, not only for its historical value but as a unique monument to the dedication of the OPW. A work in progress since 1968 the building has been saved from dereliction and the ground floor is now open to visitors with a guided tour and video presentation available. The house's kitchen garden has been largely restored by a local volunteer group, the walled garden in particular has some magical corners. Refreshments and facilities are available with friendly and helpful staff. Admission is only €5 for adults with the usual concessions and wheelchair access. 😎❤

Beautiful Marina on the banks of the Shannon. Picnic tables so you can buy a sandwich and coffee from local shop (or bring your own) and have a picnic while watching the boats come and go. Lots of ducks and swans too. Credit to whoever keeps the place clean because it was immaculate. Facilities for camper vans and boats. Toilets and showers. Electric hook up. Disposal areas for water. Rubbish collected from camper vans each morning but still not sure why there are no public rubbish bins. Will need a card from local supermarket to access electricity, toilets etc. Not sure of price. I think they're sold in 10euro cards but can be used across Ireland at waterway Ireland facilities. There's a castle with lovely gardens to explore (can't remember price of entry) and a very short walk will bring you to the ruins of a wonderful old Abbey. We didn't do the castle (something for another day) but the ruins of the abbey are stunning. Overall, a beautiful stop off on a road trip.

A short but interesting tour inside the Castle. The kitchen gardens are beautiful and it's a lovely place to walk...you can buy great books on history and folklore at the reception

Very friendly helpful castle staff with great knowledge of the castle. An excellent day out. The kitchen garden is amazing, loved the willow maze, and the apple walk.
The only thing that wasn't great was the tea room staff who didn't really seem that bothered.

Excellent site, not to be missed when visiting Ireland. Massive restoration in process, self guided tour with information posted inside. Beautiful grounds and walked garden. Nearby Priory ruins. Definitely recommend.
Public bathrooms provided by OPW. Cafe on-site.
Look at getting the Irish Hertige pass to get into over 80 historical sites throughout Ireland for one low fee.

A beautiful old castle presently being restored 4 euro entry fee well worth it just for the garden. There is a lovely little coffee shop when you are finished and reasonably priced.

Paid entrance. Nice for a stroll around in the sun. Cafe on site.
There is a ruined Abbey outside the grounds (free), which has a lot of character and a woodland park for exploring. Free parking in and around the area and down by the marina.

Lovely and well-kept history about the castle and garden. It is such a peaceful and yet there is such sadness in the air but one still feels drawn to the beautiful surroundings.
Recommend a visit once all restorations are done

Beautiful place, very peaceful, all in one place.. Marina.. Wood walk... History... Castle.. And a beautiful garden with varieties of plants and flowers.. Clean toilets..good parking space and a cafeteria. Supermacs is just 2 minutes away.

Walled garden is lovely, the castle not fully renovated yet and only the ground floor is open- small and not much to see.
The walled garden more than justifies the €5 entrance fee though.
The Irish Workhouse Centre is a fascinating heritage museum that tells the story of Ireland's workhouses. The tour is well worth it and the staff are very committed and knowledgeable.
For a place that is run solely on donations and no government funding, Portumna Workhouse is such a wonderful display of an absolutely horrific time in Irish history. After finishing our tour, we were made aware of just how little of our past is actually taught in schools.
I'd 100% recommend that all children be brought here as part of their school trips.
Our tour guide was engaging and informative, and very patient with all of our questions.

Our visit to Portumna Workhouse was informative and poignant. Aaron was our tour guide, his knowledge was excellent and his sensitivity for the child that was present was commendable. The items on display were amazing. The black shadows exhibit was really touching. I would recommend this visit to everyone.

A great place to visit to learn about an important part of Irish history. The guides and everyone are so knowledgeable and kind.

The €12 entrance fee included a guided tour, there is no option to wander around without a guide. The tour took around an hour and a half. Tours run every two hours-see their website for details. The guide was a little hesitant and seemed a little nervous which was odd as she really knew her stuff.
Fascinating and educational.
There was also an art exhibition of bog oak carvings and engravings which were famine relayed and pretty good.

Highly recommend. Really interesting and informative tour currently held at 12, 2 and 4pm daily. Our tour guide was really interesting and clearly highly researched in the workhouse histories.
Very insightful and respectful tour outlining and honouring a dark period of Irish history.

Great museum that tells the story of a pretty awful institution in a bad period in Ireland. Our guide, Roisin, was enthusiastic and knowledgeable and told the story of the workhouse very well during the tour that lasted just over an hour.

I've been a couple of times, was always interesting. Always a guide on the occasions I've been, and they're very knowledgeable and informative. Though a very sad story told here it's definitely worth a visit. I recommend to all that are visiting the area, but also for those living locally if you haven't been. The earl grey scheme was particularly interesting to learn about.

A truly amasing, really educational experience, offering a true insight into one of Ireland's most difficult periods. I took a group of 38 French teenagers on a visit and they learnt so much about the purposes of the workhouse and were awed by some of the practices during its time of operation. The guides and staff were brilliant. This should be a 'must do' on anyone's list who is interested in Irish history.

Absolutely worth a visit! Very reasonably priced and tour was just the right length. I could have listened to the guides all day long but an hour is about right so the kids don't become fed up. As for the tour guide & staff, all very friendly and full of local knowledge. I knew very little about the workhouses and have never seen one open to the public before. Hopefully in the future they will be able to restore more of the buildings and it will be even better. Well done folks, keep up the good work!

Thoroughly enjoyed the tour, our guide Michael was great and a font of knowledge on ancient Ireland and the local area with some fascinating theories and never a straight answer in line with Irish custom! We'll be back

The woman in the shop was utterly disinterested and unwelcoming. No guided tour was offered. The "self guided tour" of a few exhibits was underwhelming in the extreme, and one of the two AV exhibits was out of order, which was not mentioned when we were charged full price to show ourselves around. Looking at the other reviews, we clearly got unlucky with the staff member we encountered.

We visited in October, and did the Samhain tour. The tour was INCREDIBLE - Mike is an amazing guide!! We were blown away by how knowledgeable he was, and he was extremely accommodating with our request for time in the cave. We will be forever grateful for the experience. Thank you to Mike and everyone at the visitor centre!

Truly a wonderful experience - the museum has a stellar selection of artifacts from ancient Ireland that my sister and I enjoyed thoroughly, particularly the video activations. We also participated in a tour with Mike of the local heritage sites, and WOW was it very cool and informative! Overall, such a unique and brilliant tourism destination, providing insight into ancient to medieval to modern Ireland from an archeological, historical, and mythological perspective. We will certainly be returning someday, and truly cannot wait! 10000/10 recommend.
P.S. Their gift shop is really cool too (:

This was a highlight of our visit to the area. We did the tour, Elaine our guide was brilliant- a wealth of information and so passionate about the subject made it all come to life for us. This is a community based project which is appealing. Worth every penny of the small entrance fee.
We visited the site and the cave.
Afterward we went back to the centre where we had a late lunch- the food was freshly made and very tasty.

Absolutely brilliant ! 👏
Very informative, beautiful displays.
Rathcroghan Visitor Centre is run by a local community group who have a passion for the area, history & folklore. The well informed staff have archaeological backgrounds and lots of enthusiasm for their fascinating subject. They expertly deliver stacks of facts understandably.
I had longed to visit Owenygat Cave, ( Cave of the Cats) the Origin place of Samhain aka Halloween for some time, but tickets to their annual Halloween tour into the Cave are rare, as only 1 tour of 8 visitors operates on weekdays at that time of year.
I got the last available ticket.
Tour guide Elaine went into some depth detailing the stories and connections of the Cave to Samhain.
The Cave itself is amazing.
The bookshop is exceptional, with a plenty of books on Rathcroghan, texts, folklore, archaeology, children's books. Check out the fascinating Rathcroghan guidebook.
Lovely gifts also are on sale. Everything has a touch of quality.
I will return for the longer Rathcroghan tour to learn about the many monuments and the seat of power for Connacht, Queen Medb and The Tain.
A superb day out.

A group of 4 of us booked for the 12pm tour, the tour had a total of 6 lead by tour guide Daniel. We were given a brief rundown of the next two hours at the Rathcroghan Vistor Centre, before jumping into the tour bus and heading off to the Rathcroghan Archaeological Site. A short distance up the road, the Mound was quite visible from the carpark. We gathered at a number of information boards and were taken on a mythological / archaeological journey through Daniels story telling before taking the short walk onto the mound it's self. Daniel is a mind of information and has an easy-going charm, we were told this, along with being such a handsome young man were due to him being from the fertile lands of Roscommon! Once we had recieved an extensive overview of the site and the multiple archaeological sites around us we walked back to the tour bus and took a short drive to Oweynagat (the cave of cats, or the gate to hell!)
We were greated by a small tunnel into the ground, tucked under a hedgerow. Now I have to say, I wasn't expecting to go 'caving' but... Don't be put off!! The journey down into the ground was wet, muddy and pretty tight in places. Daniel was always on hand to help, was calm and reassuring. I'd never done anything like this before, but am so pleased I did! It was actually quite a buzz!! Just to experience the enclosure and darkness of this place, whilst hearing about the myths and history was just incredible.
I'm giving this experience a solid 5 Stars, there are a few things to note if you are intending on booking the tour. Dress appropriately, good boots or walking footware are a must, be dressed for all weathers, this is a year round all weather tour, be prepared! You'll most likely get muddy if you go into the cave, take it on the chin.. It's a really amazing experience.
I'll definitely be recommending this to friends and family.

Last week my mother and I booked a tour at the Visitor Centre and we both loved it! Mike was our tour guide and even though I've read quite a bit about Irish Mythology I still learned a lot of new stories, especially information about Medb.
My mother has trouble walking and isn't the fastest lady out there, but Mike was very patient and she could take her time to get out of the bus and up the hill. So thank you so much for that!
My personal highlight was the cave. But if you decide to crawl into it, wear clothes that you don't mind getting dirty and maybe bring an extra pair of everything if you decide to go somehwere else after.
All in all it was amazing, the people were lovely and one day I will visit again!

If you're travelling with the family this summer, Turoe Pet Farm is a great place to spend a day. There's plenty to do on the farm, including an outdoor nature trail and playground, as well as Pets Corner where you can cuddle rabbits and play with dogs. The farm also has its own football pitch and picnic areas.
Nice farm with clean paddocks and a walk right around which is gravel all the way. We arrived while the heavens opened and the rain lashed with an umbrella - and did not get dirty walking.
You get a small bag of food on entry for feeding the animals which made for some really excited kids and the animals are clearly accustomed to visitors and only to happy to be feed
Once the farm area is done there are some amazing play areas which you have a maximum of 3 hours to enjoy using a colour band system. These are really well kept. Absolutely Hugh filling the respective barns and with a lot of young staff keeping a very close watch on the children at play. Top marks
Finally they have a large catering area for food to enjoy before departing.
Highly recommended for anyone looking for a nice 1/2 day

Good fun for kids of all ages. Animals look well cared for. The whole farm looks relatively well maintained. It takes some time to cover the entire farm on foot. It has a good collection of animals. Could have had a dedicated member of staff near the rabbits and hens, so kids could enjoy petting them in an orderly manner. Large outdoor play area for kids and adults to enjoy. The large bouncy castle/world was really good. Choice of food could be better, considering the crowd. Nevertheless a fun day out for kids and family.

Fantastic experience. I cannot praise this place enough. The inflatable indoor area is massive and of the very highest quality and layout. They also have a lovely soft play are just a few meters away. Food and drink options were excellent. There seemed to me to be at least three playgrounds with very modern equipment. The newest of the three playgrounds is probably the highest quality and most innovative playground I have ever seen. Plus, as you'd expect, there are lots of beautiful animals. Plenty of parking and friendly helpful staff everywhere. This place clearly spends serious money on equipment and staff, that is very obvious and it all adds up to an amazing family experience. I cannot recommend Turoe Pet Farm enough. A+

Neat and tidy is highlight. Animals in numbers are less but i thinks its enough to enjoy. Felt relaxed after the walk. Kids will enjoy and make friends with others. Can use playgrounds, football court bounce etc. At the bouncee more security has to be made because I could see a couple of ladies were using the bouncee and the guy was helpless in stopping them. Lots of parking available.

Absolutely brilliant place. We travelled up from laois so a bit of a spin but it was worth it. Such a lovely welcome when you arrive + We got 2 bags of animal feed and went on our way. Plenty of huts around the hawthorn walk for you to shelter in from rain or as we had today glorious sunshine. Busy but plenty of room for social distancing, sanitizing stations everywhere. The staff in the jungle zone and in the inflatable city were absolutely brilliant and kept a very close eye on all children so no one was getting injured. Great job well done. The food was fab and not expensive at all. We could have easily spent another hour or 2 there with the amount of playgrounds and astro pitch but our little man was already exhausted from the fun he had. Turoe farm is spotless inside and out. We will definately be returning. Thank you for a lovely day out.

Great place for family to bring back a more wholesome entertainment experience. You can spend the whole day there in either rain or shine thanks to the addition of covered in play areas as well as the huge bouncy castle shed which has to be seen to be believed. There are two food option , the restaurant which serves very affordable and tasty food or the cafe which has sweets and cakes homemade and delicious. If you like you can also bring your own food and enjoy it on the many picnic tables located all around or in the restaurant area its self. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the food quality and taste was very good although basic. We have been many times over the years and will continue to go as it is just a fantastic wholesome family day out with no electronics to be seen and tired happy kids at the end of the day.

Dunguaire Castle is a stunning 16th-century tower house in Galway Bay, located just minutes from the city centre. It was restored by Oliver St. John Gogarty in the 20th century and now serves as a venue for cultural events throughout the year, including evening banquets during the summer months. The castle has a literary history, with notable figures like William Butler Yeats and George Bernard Shaw meeting here.
Small but very charming castle, especially during a high tide! Very well restored with furnished rooms and a small souvenir shop. 8 euros entrance fee. The spiralling staircase takes you to different floors as well as all the way to the roof that offers great views of the surroundings. Restroom on site! Definitely a place to visit! (there is a free parking lot ~2min walking distance).

Great castle in perfect conditions with a beautiful surrounding area.
To park your car, look for a blue and white house near the castle and opposite to it there's an area where you can leave your car (check last photo)
It is closed now but even then it is worth for the views and the chance to take pictures.
No wheelchair access inside and around the castle unfortunately, just at the front where is a path.
⭐ Great place. Would like to try the banquets in future.

Very well maintained castle and grounds with a rich history behind it. There is a trail surrounding the castle you could take for a walk carefully as it can be slippery and very windy climbing up. Gorgeous lake surrounding area. Car park free opposite the castle, a bit of a walk especially on a cold and windy day. There is also a ruins-like structure literally opposite the road from the castle. Enjoyable trip. You can also park for free at the town/city centre of Kinvarra and explore away. It's worth it.

We came this evening to celebrate our daughter's 18th Birthday. What a celebration it was! The castle is beautiful. The staff were friendly and entertaining.
There was a 4-course meal. When they served dessert, apple pie with fresh whipped cream, they lit a candle in one and served it to our daughter first as they sang Happy Birthday to her! We didn't ask them to do that but it was such a nice touch.
After the meal there was about 30 minutes of entertainment.
It was a magical night!
The only con, and I hate to imply anything negative, is that there was NO professional photograph offered. It's nit-picky because of how excellent everything and everyone was. But in case you were wondering, there isn't a professional photograph.
It worked out as someone took a family picture of us outside the castle afterwards.

A dining experience is offered in the castle, we did not know this beforehand and so only had a look around. I would imagine that the banquet would be quite marvellous in such a setting.
If you're near the area I would recommend sating the curiosity, not more than a 30min visit.

Beautiful! Lovely little circle to walk around the outside too and enjoy the beach. Very picturesque

The Castle was closed so we were only able to explore outside the castle. Very beautiful area.

We stopped by Dunguaire Castle during our visit to Ireland. We really enjoyed the site and paid to climb to the top. Spectacular views, but note that the path around the top is very narrow; it can be a bit tight if you love food like I do.
We only spent 30-45 minutes here, but we were glad we stopped.

As a first time visitor (did not come back for the dining experience) it was great! Not much to the castle, but loved seeing things from the very top!
I would definitely recommend people to come here!
After you go through all the floors and go back to where you bought your ticket… there are a set of stairs to the right that lead to a mezzanine area above that has two nice woman that make rings, bracelets and things using silver. It’s a nice hidden gem with reasonable prices! I recommend that for anyone as well if you want a souvenir that’s not made out of pewter!

Beautiful castle. A lot of climbing on narrow stairs if you are tall watch your head!
A great glimpse into the past. Displays of furniture and clothing.
They also have medieval banquets in the main hall.
Ran into a local who was using dowsing rods and let us try and it worked! Lol
