Shirakawa-go is a historical village tucked away in a remote mountainous area that boasts traditional Gassho-style farmhouses. As one of UNESCO's World Heritage sites, it is a must-visit for any tourist. The tranquil and peaceful atmosphere of the village makes it an ideal escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
It was nice. Seeing the traditional homes in that region up close was spectacular. There are plenty of shops to visit and buy reasonable priced trinkets. We stopped by the restaurant nearest to the entrance parking lot and had lunch. It was lovely.

Beautiful village!!!
It would be best if you can find a place and stay for a night near the village. You can visit it early in the morning next day. No crowded tourist before 8:30am.
There are few restaurant near by but only 1 open after 7:30pm. So be prepare and have your dinner before that.

A really scenic and peaceful place. Lots to see and do. There are many tourists that come here, however the place is so big, it's no big deal. As part of our tour, we also had a delicious meal. If you are in the region, definitely add this place to your list.

Nice, calm, beautiful area. Can have a lot of people walking around, but the vibe is rather pleasant and everyone seems to respect these lovely surroundings. We have a room with a back window looking right out over a wonderful stream. If you do your research and set the right expectations, I think you will love including a visit here within your regional travel plans.

I was amazed at this well presented Heritage town! The houses still accommodate the locals & stay over tourists. That was us!😊
The locals are early morning risers due to the thousands of tourists that converge during the day. I observed the locals dog walking, gardening & general outdoor cleaning in the early morning hours.
If you stay overnight, you really must arise early, you will have the village streets to yourself! We had a fabulous experience!

While this place is the most beautiful in wintertime, covered with snow, it is still very nice place to visit anytime of the year.
I visited Shiragawa-Go during Autumn and didn't disappoint. This place/village is very attractive. You can see why it is UNESCO world heritage site. People preserved old architecture, and village very well so you can feel like you warp to the past.

Great heritage area. Lots to look at and learn about how the locals lived. Went in early April and it was a clear fresh day. Could be done in a t-shirt except for the strong winds when crossing the foot beidge. Highly recommend if you have at least 3+ hours in the area

Came here on late spring.
One of the Unesco World Heritage. A must visit.
A historical village that secluded beyond the mountain. It was a calm, serene, peaceful.
You need to go up to the hill to see and enjoy the whole village area from above. It was too beautiful.
The river and the water ditch sorround is super clear and clean as crystal

This is a traditional japanese village. It takes about 3-4 hours to cover the entire village. We visited here during early autumn. There is a bus to the observatory point. Cost is 200 JPY. But there is also a foot path to climb there. We used the bus to go uphill and used the footpath to come down. River side is very beautiful. Try to visit the museums if you are interested to see the historical things.
Chamal Perera — Google review
Well worth the bus ride (or rental car drive) to see these amazing houses built hundreds of years ago in a picturesque location. Spend at least 2-3 hours here to walk around and view the village, and grab a bite to eat or a souvenir. Visited on May 22, 2023.
Matty Hammo — Google review
You will need to buy a bus ticket in advance if you come with public transport. Also to go back. And keep in mind that everything closes at 4pm so it would be best to eat lunch around 12-1pm.
Shantal — Google review
Nice little tourist area, deserted at night so make sure you get dinner early! We had a lovely quiet time there in the morning before the crowds started to com at around 9am when the museums open

Amazing place, it transports you to another time period almost. The people there were so welcoming to us, we had something to look at every step of the way around the village. Make sure to respect and follow the rules of the place (no trespassing, no littering, etc.)

Absolutely love this place! When going when its less crowded, it is very peaceful and tranquil feeling the cold wind on your skin while looking at the surrounding green mountains and the old fashioned village. Drain water is so clear and clean that there are fishes swimming in the drain! Definitely recommend to go up to the observatory either through hiking or a shuttle to observe and really appreciate the beauty of the landscape aswell as the village in its entirety! Definitely should go!

Amazing place, big snow and magical scenario. Christmas time must go place. If you go with car, must need snow chain. All restaurants open and not over crowded. Way better to enjoy then any other season.

A little town with all the good feels.
The houses are lovely. Everything is walkable. Homes are fascinating too.
Homes have no signal nail and are known for their roof structure that look like praying hands.
I particularly loved the cafe where you see the Shirakawago scenery whilst drinking coffee.
There was also a lunch menu for 2000 Yen with hida beef set super yummy.
Everything is great and amazing in this lovely town.

Love the small village feel and the unique high pitched thatched roofed houses and the river nearby. Has a couple of houses that you can pay (400Y) to go inside and experience the past (Myozinji house built since 1748). Need at least 6 hours here for visit. Kids will love the trouts living in the gutters along the streets.

We made a three hour stop here on our way to Kanazawa by bus. It's a bit of a tourist spot and good for a one hour stop only. It has lots of toilets around the town and two small cafes if you want a coffee. We found one restaurant which was open. A very nice town with a lot of original houses and you can also go up to the observatory. When we went there was a very large number of tourists.
Keith Saunders — Google review
We were lucky to see some snow when we visited this unique village in the north of Gifu.
Very unique house design and there were shops and restaurants around the village.
It's such a famous tourist attraction spot that at the time when I visited, there were more tourists than locals living in this area.
I would definitely recommend coming here when it's snowing a lot more than the pictures here.
Nicholas Tan — Google review
We have visited this place before and I have also reviewed this place previously and so I will keep this one "short and sweet".
This time round, we allocated more time here as previously we only stopped by here for about an hour (after our visit to Takayama Old Town) but didn't have much time to roam the place.
We arrived slightly before 3pm. Weather was cold (but it was much colder later on when the sun set) but the river had not fully frozen like in our previous trip. It was quite comfortable to walk under the sun and yet very cold condition.
More shops were opened as it was weekday (our previous visit was on a Sunday and many shops were closed then). So we could walk around and shop for local foods and souvenirs.
We loved the scenery, lots of greenery and beautiful cottage houses, and our mother nature was just right around us!
Surely it was a wonderful revisiting trip on this UNESCO World Heritage site! Definitely worth it!
Ed Chung — Google review
A very quiet place for tourists to appreciate the old Japanese culture and architecture. The place is close to a number of local restaurants. We drove there on a weekday in March. Need to go through a lot of tunnels to reach there. Better equip with sun glasses because its tiring to drive among mountains with remaining snow. Both parking and restaurants are not too full. Kids can still hv snowball fights and build up snowman though we no longer could see snow on roof any more. Houses are close to each other and we could do some walking while not being too exhausted. Suggest to stay there for 2.5 hours including lunch. Love the place, being something different to visit in Japan.

A magical experience in this winter wonderland! It was snowing on Christmas Day! We had so much fun building a snowman. Many beautiful farm houses are covered in snow for great photos. Lots of souvenirs shops and little restaurants and dessert shops. The road leading up the observatory deck has turned icy, so need to walk slowly and carefully. The view from the observatory deck was breathtaking. It was an incline going up. Need to take breaks along the way. Don't forget to take pictures!

Very nice old town of thatched roof houses. All made with wood and ropes, no nails used in the construction.
It was snowing which added to the magic.
We were there relatively early with our car but there were already lots of people around. It's nice and you spend an hour going around and up to the observatory point. Don't take the bus, use the short walkway by the side, much better views of the village.
Seb Camborieux — Google review
gorgeous ghasso town, we got so lucky with the snow (early march) - go to だんご屋 ゆたか on your way to the observation deck and try the sweet sake! so many places to eat in town and lots of cute souvenirs! make sure you buy a bus ticket back to where you’re going in advance (we got stranded for a few hours but we were lucky to get seats on the last bus)
Brit Thew — Google review
Visit in the winter peak so temperature was -5. Beautiful and fairytale-like village, make sure you have your time after 3pm or before 10am as all same day tourists would arrive from 10am and leave by 3pm. Observation deck has beautiful view but extremely crowded most of the time.
Truc Nguyen — Google review
Ranks high in my favorite places visited so far. Went for a day trip (winter season) and instantly fell in love. Regretted not staying longer and will definitely visit again.
I am in awe at how the locals protect this heritage site. The town looks mystical from afar. If you’re into heritage tourism then this is a place you shouldn’t miss.
There are food stalls and souvenir shops available.

We arrived there with the first bus from Kanazawa.
A few hours should be enough to walk around the entire area. It’s really beautiful and special.

I went there for the first time.
I mainly went to the Jabujabu pond, but the splash cannon that is launched every 5 minutes by a dinosaur that spews water!
The pond was shaded by tarps and tents, so adults could watch over the children in the shade even on extremely hot days.
I was worried that some users were using disposable diapers to bathe in the pond.
The huge athletic playground that was ordered from Germany is a masterpiece. It was a facility that even adults could enjoy.
The botanical garden is cooler than the outside, so it was comfortable to appreciate the plants while avoiding the intense heat of the sun.
There are also shops and food corners, so if you get a little hungry, you can take a rest here.

Impression I saw on the net → Feeling like a public park. Impressions I actually saw → It was well maintained and it was pretty good. ①For families → Waterfront with dinosaurs and jumbo slides, etc. I will. It blends well with nature with butterflies flying around. This park is the result of the efforts of Anjo City, which wanted to play a leading role in agriculture by reclaiming wasteland from the Meiji period, following Denmark, an agriculturally advanced country.

There were many beautiful plants that were well taken care of. There was a space where only hosta was exhibited, and it was a good opportunity to learn about plants.
However, there are few places where you can cool down, so when it is hot such as a pond or the shade of a tree, it seems to be a struggle.
It was a place where you can enjoy seeing and feeling seasonal flowers. It is also recommended for those who have never been and those with children.

Not quite sure what dinosaurs and gargoyles taking a dump in the bushes have to do with Denmark, but this is a pretty tranquil “theme park” in Anjo with a lot of fun things to find. There’s different flower groves, secret gardens and scenic themed walks. There’s a short dinosaur themed section with animatronic dinosaurs to point at, which is nice. There are a few decent restaurants and shops dotted about selling sausages and whatnot (no danish bacon though? Massive oversight), and there’s a clutch of local craft beers available too. It’s pretty kid friendly with play parks and whatnot as well. Nice place to have a relaxing afternoon.

A paid indoor play area for young children and an excellent, free outdoor play area and climbing frame for active kids. Food stalls, souvenir shops and a couple of indoor eateries mean your well-covered for a half day - maybe longer if you take a stroll around entire park. Would go back.

A perfect place on a casual day for family! The place itself is not too big and not too small. There are some rides for children, relaxing area for picnic, nature products for you and a lot more to explore.

Don't miss train ride n short firework show...
Kids will enjoy this park!!!

Small pool area (like a pond actually) would like to say suitable for 3yo kid and below. Big area to explore, however in the summer season you probably lose interest in taking a tour.
Btw limited picnic area near the pool (pond), also a setback to the park.
I also expect a proper shower room available, since kids or even adults might be soaked or wet and need to be properly cleaned before continuing the journey.
The LEGOLAND Japan Hotel is a vibrant and imaginative accommodation that offers a whimsical experience for families with kids of all ages. Opened in 2017, it has quickly become a premier tourist destination in Nagoya. The hotel features colorful quarters, a restaurant, bar, and an indoor kids' pool. The adjacent LEGOLAND Japan theme park is divided into seven themed areas, including Miniland Japan with replica models of famous destinations like Kyoto and Mount Fuji.
We loved staying at this hotel because right in front of the park. The hotel is super new, we stayed in the Ninja Go section, perfectly accommodating a family of 4.
Around the hotel there are lots of food options but if you want to stay in, you can definitely eat at the two restaurants at the hotel one of which does require booking.
The continental breakfast included with the rooms is Japanese oriented, but very nice.
The best part of it, is the playgrounds inside the lego workshops and the various games offered through out the day.

Everyone is so very helpful, we don't expect anyone to speak English, but they all did and were being as helpful as possible. They made all the reservations inside the hotel for us since we didn't have the app. We lost our phone charger and the hotel even let us borrow one. The elevator plays music! We're very grateful!!

We took a 2 day package which costed us 200,000 yen and I can’t believe how poor their customer service was. They do not have even one vegetarian or vegan option on their menus. All the restaurants outside the resort close by 4pm which was absolutely ridiculous because the park closes at 6pm and everyone was hungry looking for food. This hotel is definitely NOT International standards.
The staff wouldn’t let me sit with my family at the hotel restaurant because I was not ordering anything but they failed to understand that there was nothing on the menu for me to eat. After arguing it out, they let me sit with my family however watched over me like a hawk to make sure I was not eating anything. It was disgraceful.
Our package included breakfast so the next day when we went to the restaurant, the Staff told me they have prepared vegan for me. I was very happy to hear that however two days in a row the only thing they made for me at 08:30am was tomato sauce pasta. I requested for a vegetable sandwich and was declined. We ordered in-room dining and requested for mayonnaise and were declined.
For two days we tried to go to the swimming pool and they had no availability.
I have been to all the resorts over JAPAN such as Disney, Universal etc and I must say staying at The LEGOLAND Hotel was the worst experience from all. At least at Disney & Universal we got vegetarian options. We even got vegetarian options directly on the menu at the new Warner Bros Making of Harry Potter.
Very disappointed with the services and customer service.

Located directly in front of Legoland Japan. Rooms are for max of 2 adults and 2 children. One master bedroom and very very small bedroom nook for children with small size bunk bed (about 140cm max) , treasure chest, Lego blocks, and TV.
The hotels facilities are excellent for younger elementary aged children. There is an indoor Lego jungle gym, shallow pool with floating legos for small children, small gift shop, and 2 restaurants.
Breakfast is included for 4 people so it’s best to go with 4 people. They don’t give a discount if you travel with less people.
Daily 30min workshops are also provided for about 2000 yen.
Checkin is at 4pm and checkout is at 11. Legoland opens at 10am and open until 6pm.
Recommend going to Legoland first day, ending with workshops and pool at hotel in the evening, stay the night, and have a lazy morning checkout. Then maybe a stroll onto the Lego aquarium next door.
Workshops and pool reservations are available on day of check in. Sadly we were not able to reserve a spot for the pool 5 minutes after reservations started. Be sure to have your phones ready to make reservations! (See legoland website).
Wifi download speed is extremely slow. Was not able to use educational apps for kids due to low wifi speed.
Overall was a wonderful unforgettable stay! Highly recommend going at least once if you can while your children are young. Expensive but worth it!

The scavenger hunt for free toys inside the room, the free streaming of LEGO movies, and the small activities inside the hotel made the stay very memorable for my son. We're very lucky to have met a friendly hotel staff who helped us with a few things and made sure we were having a comfortable stay. We will definitely be coming back again!

Legoland Hotel Japan may not be as luxurious as any of the Tokyo Disneyland/DisneySea Hotels but the former gives travelers more value for their money. For example, kids can play legos to their hearts' content on either the first or the second floor play areas. Their elevators gives you that "disco feel" (so experience it yourself when you check-in).
When dining at the Brick's Restaurant, a mini-buffet is included when ordering the main dish.
For my family, the Kingdom Themed premium room on the 8th floor was part of our vacation package. A bunk bed for the kids was located upon entering the room with a uv purifier unit & lcd tv, and a queen-sized bed for parents was situated by the window.
Standard bedroom and bathroom amenities were replenished daily as expected. Heated toilet seats and handheld bathtub shower-head function perfectly. Each part of the room either had lego-related wall papers or lego-built ornaments.
Important to note that all luggages can be deposited at the concierge prior to check-in (in case you arrive at the hotel earlier than 4pm), and after checking out (if you still plan to go to the theme park past 11am).

LEGOLAND Japan Hotel offers a whimsical experience for families with its vibrant LEGO-themed decor and playful atmosphere. However, the charm doesn't fully compensate for the steep pricing. While the themed rooms and LEGO-inspired amenities are delightful, the overall value for money seems disproportionate. The accommodation cost may not align with the expected level of luxury or additional services. Travelers might find more affordable options in the vicinity without compromising on comfort. If budget considerations are paramount, exploring alternatives might be prudent. Ultimately, while the LEGO magic is present, the pricing might be a deterrent for those seeking a more cost-effective lodging solution near LEGOLAND Japan.

Been here a few times and the kids loved it however under current circumstances with Covid-19, not worth the expensive price as everything LEGO related within the hotel is unavailable, room service for food is unavailable also.
If your gonna charge people for such a high amount to pay, at least let us know prior to booking what is available not available to be used IN the hotel.
2 stars is better then no stars.

Children enjoyed roomquest and legogames all around hotel. Restaurant is busy, very limited choice and works till 20:30 (last order). Another 2 restaurants outside of hotel - nice, but last order till 19:30. The only preference for hotel guests for LegoLand park is "free baggage keeping"

Wonderfully thought out hotel for a Lego fan, I had a fantastic time as an adult with my wife I could only imagine what it would be like for a child, Masako (concierge) was incredibly friendly and helpful. She went above and beyond in making our stay the best it could be (thank you Masako)
The location is the only issue I had with staying here it’s very far from the city and doesn’t have much to do outside of Legoland and sea life. It’s also oddly close to some industrial areas?
Over all a good experience for Lego fans and 100% worth a longer stay next time.

As Emmet says, everything is awesome!! Our kids loved the Legoland Hotel. We stayed at the Friends themed room where there was a bunk bed and a double bed. The room, while a bit dated, was decorated in a Friends mural and the kids enjoyed watching the Lego movie from their bunk bed. The disco party lift added to the overall experience and the kids loved dancing between floors. The location was also perfect if you're visiting Legoland. We bought a combo pass with Sea Life and we visited Legoland on the first day, before settling in at the hotel and checking out Sea Life the next day. Breakfast was also super cool with lots and lots of kids options and Lego themed food. Everything is awesome!!

We decided to stay at Legoland hotel as there was a concert next door at Messi Port Exhibition Centre which we bought tickets for. This made it convenient as we have kids and could entertain our kids at Legoland at the same time.
The hotel was clean, service was good and friendly, and the kids loved the lego themed rooms with bunkbeds and lego everywhere!
The only downside of this property and Legoland itself is its location. It’s located on the outskirts of Nagoya in the port area. The hotel and Legoland itself is completely surrounded by port and industrial buildings. This means that food options is limited to what the hotel and the Legoland related makers pier has to offer. The few restaurants at makers pier all shut early and are mostly closed by 7pm, leaving pretty much the only option for food being the hotel restaurant, which had its last order by 8:30pm. Hence late dinners are a no-go for this hotel. Am not sure what I would do if I arrived past 9pm at this hotel and have a hungry family to feed. There’s a convenience store 500m away at the train station, but it closes at 10pm on weekdays and apparently even earlier on weekends.
Advice for would be travellers, we took the train 2 stops from Legoland to Inae and there’s a few food options there.
Recommendation to hotel management:
1. Offer late night room service option if possible for guests who need to eat past 8:30pm
2. If late night room service isn’t possible due to manpower or budget, perhaps at least some food vending machines in the hotel would be much appreciated
3. It would be good if there was a 24 hour or late night convenience store nearby. Beyond the food, people might need sundries late night
That being said, we did enjoy our stay very much. Did not want to be overly critical but do think that if the hotel could address the late night food options, it would see even more success! Thank you for the stay.

First time staying at Legoland Hotel and we enjoyed it. Was right across from the park, rooms clean, and kids enjoyed their own space. The TVs had all the LEGO movies and they had their own TV to watch them. Room service food was decent, but nothing that stands out. Parking is not owned by Legoland Hotel and is a third party about a 5 minute walk away, so ensure to pull in front to drop off luggage then park the car. Parking rate was about 2,200 yen a day. There are a couple places to eat around the hotel but some closed very early. The breakfast was good with lots of options and some LEGO themed foods. Overall, very good experience and would stay again for the themes, convenience and the breakfast.
SCMaglev and Railway Park is a museum that showcases over 35 railway vehicles, including steam locomotives and bullet-train cars. The park was built with the concept of being a place of dreams and memories, offering visitors the chance to view 38 actual trains up close. These include examples from different eras, such as the 1913 steam locomotive, passenger trains used after the war, and intergenerational Bullet Trains.
First: there’s no dedicated parking so park across the street at the furniture store and follow the signs as you walk (you’ll pass by actual trash cans if you’re carrying trash). Second: tickets are cash only (1,000 for adults and 300-500 for kids). Third: not great for strollers as you can’t bring them inside the trains.
We had an awesome visit here and enjoyed the displays and the history. You can board at least ten different trains from various eras and see many more full-size cars from the history of rail. From the first version of the Shin, to maglev prototypes, to old steam-powered sleeper cars, there is a huge assortment of trains to explore here.
We had no wait getting into the museum but tickets for the “shin operator” and “locomotive operator” experiences were sold out.
Fun location for families, train enthusiasts, and photographers.

Amazing place! Very informative exhibition of Shinkansen technology, and also cool Maglev train simulation. Also there is very big diorama, I think it’s the biggest and the most marvelous I have ever seen. It animates every 30min and very interesting stuff is happening in every place of it. I was very content after my visit here :)

It's a great place to visit with family and friends. If you like to know the history of japanese trains, you must come here. The price for adults is 1000 JPY. There are some restuarants/ souvenir shop inside the premises. I specially liked the Shinkansen history and the evolution of the trains. There are also places for kids to enjoy like making model trains/tracks. They allow to visit the inside of some of the trains. Great museum 5/5

The best way to spend a rainy day is by visiting museums. This museum definitely could not be missed during my stay in Nagoya. I like trains, so this could not be missed, especially if you travel around by bullet train through Japan. The museum is quite far from the city center, so a 20 minute train trip is required to get here. If you're lucky, you can sit in one of the trains with the Lego interior, cause the Lego museum is around the corner. There is a movie being played in the entrance hall of the museum, where three trains are positioned. In the main hall you will find a big collection of trains, from old to new. I liked the part where the current technology is shown for the Shinkansen trains, like the pantograph and upper power line. Some special trains which are used in the past are in the back of the hall. There is a big miniature train world as well, and please take your time here. At some point the room gets dark and represents the night. Everything is being led up and looks amazing. You can spend at least 2 to 3 hours in here.

Good amount of information, with interactive exhibits to explain the technologies and systems. Unfortunately, only very basic information is translated into English, the rest are in Japanese.
Best part, in my opinion, is their famed Diorama, featuring detailed models of 4 major train stations and train sets through the years. The trains run automatically and the tracks and lights switch accordingly to regulate train traffic. Some models are also animated to show the different activities from day to night, like a bus running around the roads and avoiding parked vehicles, an ambulance and fire engine attending to a fire, a ferry sailing in the harbor, a moving merry go round.

Given Japan's extraordinary train system and network, this attraction could be better presented, and more thorough.
Whilst there are many displays, explanations are quite often shallow, and incomplete.
Even as a speaker of Japanese, I was left with many questions after reading the displays. The English explanations were birding on scarce.
Also disappointing was the inability to get a booking on the Shinkansen simulator. I arrived very early, and found that it was already booked out until late afternoon. This needs to be better managed.
Having said that, this is still a worthwhile place to visit - I just suggest that you come prepared for an exhibition which doesn't reach the usually high Japanese standards.

Very nice place for people who love trains and technology in general. A couple of hours is enough to explore every corner of the museum. Has a wide range of interactive media that explain the Japanese train history and its development, I was personally intrigued by the train diorama they had. Very informative for kids too! Thanks for the wonderful place!

SCMaglev Railway Park in Nagoya is a great place to learn about the latest maglev technology and get close to many high-speed trains, including the very first Shinkansen from 1964. Great to see so much pride for Japanese technology at SCMAGLEV and Railway Park in Nagoya. It is an excellent place to visit, not just for the Shinkansen history and maglev future but has so many old rolling stock from years past that you can get up close and enjoy what it must have been like to travel in.

Nice place to visit if you are interested in the history of railroad and Shinkansen in Japan. The early years of train station, research and development of the bullet train are well documented inside the museum. There is also place where children can play inside,a canteen inside to those who want to eat snacks and lunch and souvenir shop for your memorable visit in the park.

If you love trains like me, you will spend a happy afternoon here. An easy day trip using the Rail-pass from Kyoto, its an easy switch to the local train. If you are on a budget, buy your lunch at the convenience store at the station as there are free tables to eat at the museum. I used the museum cafe and it was a little pricey, but lots of fun.

We did not plan on going here until last minute, especially since we saw it was right next to Legoland (5 minute walk from the Legoland Hotel). Kids were dreading another museum and they lived this one. Many interactive things for kids to do, I wish I had alotted more time to this as they had fun going through all the trains and pressing all the buttons to see how different parts of the trains work. There are some parts where you pay extra like the train simulator and bullet train simulator. Like many museums in Japan, they also have papers for kids to go find stamps located throughout the museum. If you are remotely into trains or have kids, this may be a place to add to your itinerary. We spent about an hour here but kind of rushed it and could have spent more time here.

American family visit. Great railway museum with many exhibits and interactive displays. You have the ability to enter many of the train cars to see what they look like. They also have a huge train diorama that has a show about every 15-20 minutes which was a lot of fun. For an additional fee you can also play the train simulators. Many of the signs, displays, and videos have English which is a huge plus in enjoying the museum of you don't read Japanese.
There is a cafe onsite as well as a young child play area. The food was good and was about 4300 yen for my three person family.
Need about 3 hours for a semi-decent run through, longer to really take it all in.

Came in with high expectations after visiting the Kyoto railway museum a year ago and while I can't say it's disappointing as the train displays are definitely amazing, the content and context are both lacking.
JR Central Japan has positioned the space as a place to "display" technologies with the maglev as the centerpiece, and hence there is not much about the most profitable/critical section of Japan's bullet train. It is also disappointing in a sense that the most financially viable JR operator in all of Japan is spending so little on its showcase.
The forward looking mindset doesn't serve a museum space very well, as now we know the maglev train project is very much in limbo with Shizuoka reluctant to green-light the construction. Perhaps it's time to rethink the space and consider an expansion to incorporate more substantial materials rather than kids' playroom.

Brought me back to my childhood years playing with LIMA trains....
This is an amazing place for kids and the family.
We were treated to a drum performance by youth and kids, too, as it was the weekend.
It's super convenient to visit as it's a point to point train from nagoya Station, the end point, which is just outside the museum.

Great railway museum, very popular with families.
Exhibitions are primarily in Japanese but with highlights in English.
It would be great if there were more information published in English for tourists.
The diorama is lovely but there are definitely better ones in Europe.

Right beside a train station, and cheap parking close by. Great for kids of all ages! Good size museum you and your family can spend a full day. Great lunch options as you can try many different train lunchboxes, be sure to show up early for the best selection。。。♡

Very very cool railway museum! The train display (multiple of them!) are super impressive! You could walk into most/all of the retired train cars in the display room and really see its revolution! My 5yr old son is a big (little) train fan, and he had SO MUCH fun exploring (and playing a bit of hide and seek too) among the train cars! They have both 2 different kinds of train simulators for you to experience how driving a train is like: normal train for 100 yen (8-10 min), and Shinkansen simulator for 500 yen (~15 min, first come first served and you need to reserve for a specific time). Both were fun and recommended! We also really enjoyed the interactive exhibits on both first and second floor where you could learn about different parts and mechanics of the trains (mostly Japanese though). There is also a ticket machine where you could input and print out your own unique named tickets! Great free souvenir. They are a proper gift shop at the exit of the museum where you can find all kinds of cool and cute train/Shinkansen souvenirs as well! Surprised and super neat gem place for anyone visiting Nagoya!

A must visit for railfans! I love the rolling stock display, with some of them you can even enter and take pictures in. Ever wondered what trains looked like in the old days, before modern subways and bullet trains? What I love especially is that the museum caters to non-Japanese speaking visitors with English guides all around the place. Don’t miss the Delica Station on the second floor, for some train bento served in actual, plastic train containers you can take back home. Lunch and souvenir in one.

Okazaki Castle is a majestic structure that comes with an impressive park, a museum, charming teahouses, and even a Noh theater. This building also features a quaint clock tower and boasts of picturesque gardens that are sure to take your breath away. It's the perfect place to appreciate the beauty of traditional Japanese architecture while immersing oneself in the rich cultural history of Japan.
Okazaki Park is a beautifully landscaped park situated in the heart of Okazaki City. It boasts a reconstructed 16th-century castle, a samurai museum, and captivating spring cherry blossoms. Visitors can take a leisurely stroll around the park or visit the renowned Okazaki Castle. The park's river side has undergone significant improvements with better sidewalks and lighting, making it an ideal spot for watching fireworks during summer evenings.
Magnificent views of the cherry blossom season here in Okazaki Park. The views are plentiful and dazzling from every angle. You will have a hard time putting your camera or phone down and soak in the atmosphere.
Not only are the trees well lit at night, but the castle serves as the central beacon and landmark. There is a stunning red footbridge that looks absolutely gorgeous up close or from afar.
During the cherry blossom season, there are carnival style game and food vendors lined up everywhere on the park grounds. We had no shortage of tasty snacks, and entertaining games for the kids. Who am I kidding... Adults can join in on the fun as well.
Several canals and creeks run through or around the park. The lights and sights reflect off the water to create a postcard scenery.
I wish I had found this park earlier. I will definitely want to come back again.

A nice little park in the middle of Okazaki City. You can also visit Okazaki Castle or take a walk around it. Especially the red bridge which also famous for photo spot. The river side has been improving a lot, considering this place also held a firework every year. Sidewalk and lighting become better nowadays. Around autumn and winter, you can see the illumination on it. The center clock will do a doll show around 5PM if I remember correctly.

The first time I came here I was surprised, it turned out that the place was very spacious, and I entered the Okazaki royal castle which was so luxurious, but unfortunately I was not allowed to take any photos of the contents inside, except for the top floor. I took a photo from the veranda of the top floor of the castle, it was a very beautiful sight. after that I got on a boat sailing around the cherry blossoms that were blooming and beautiful, I also felt very lucky. because I can meet the descendants of the king of okazaki who is now the owner of the main position of king okazaki. friendly and handsome, this is a highly recommended place if you are confused about traveling

The Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium is a modern facility that offers a diverse range of marine species, including whales and dolphins. Visitors can enjoy captivating animal performances in the massive 3,000-seater main pool. The aquarium's Journey to the Antarctic exhibition allows guests to explore the icy plains of one of Earth's coldest places. It is a popular destination for families with kids and marine life enthusiasts from around the globe.
It is a HUGE and fun aquarium. It is a little bit chaotic in design, but that means you keep discovering more and more.
They have one building dedicated to their cetaceans, and another building for others.
It was also very easy access from the Port Train station.

Entrance fee of ¥2030. If you’re looking for food, there’s a food court in a nearby jetty in between the aquarium and train station. The dolphin show is definitely worth seeing and I don’t think anyone got wet even in the splash zone. The orca training was a little disappointing but it could be that the orca was having a bad day. 🐬 Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Nagoya.

I went there with my 6th grade son.
Depart at 7:30 in the morning (Shizuoka Prefecture) on the Shin-Tomei Expressway
I arrived a little after 10 o'clock, and I was able to park smoothly in the parking lot, and I had purchased the admission ticket online.
Enter without queuing on the day.
First, go to the south building of the fish display.
Overwhelmed by a school of glittering sardines,
In the blue aquarium, you will be healed by the fish and rays that gather around the colorful coral reefs. I had fun for 3 hours in between🐢🐟
Lunch will be served at the on-site restaurant. It was crowded, but luckily I was lucky enough to have a free seat. Kishimen was delicious.
Then go to the North Building. Well-timed public training for killer whales, dolphin show an hour later.
View from a seat in the 4th row where you can get a little splash of water.
There are only two killer whales in domestic aquariums, and the powerful jump and the show of using their tail fins to hit the surface of the sea and splash water (although it is called training) is a masterpiece!
And the dolphins' jumping power and speed are amazing ~ I can't say anything w
Reply on the big screen again.
Also, while you are waiting, you will not get bored, such as showing a video or showing the audience seats to make it exciting.
It was a very hot day, but the sea breeze was comfortable, and it took about two and a half hours outside, including the waiting time. It didn't hurt.
It was very crowded during the summer holidays and weekends, but it wasn't that crowded and uncomfortable, and the children had a lot of fun and it was a very good memory.
lastly…
There is also a corner that touches on the problem of garbage and global warming, and I was able to read it with my child and think about it.
It's important for the future, so maybe it's better to put it out front and stand out? I thought.

Beluga training was the best in my eyes 😊 you can get really close to them and they’re so cute!
Dolphins training was also very good, didn’t see them as close as belugas but still pretty good view 🪽
The killer whales training view wasn’t that good, kinda far from us, but it wasn’t such a big deal to us.
There are also huuge turtles and many penguins + a lot of other animals. 🪷

It was a huge place with an enormous area for dolphin and orca shows. It has two buildings -- North and South. It was my first time seeing a large killer whale in Japan. It is one of the most famous aquariums in Japan. The whole place is so large that it would be difficult to see it all in one day. Beluga is valuable because there are few other facilities where you can see it. Other exhibits include penguins, turtles, Antarctic creatures, and a school of horse mackerels, all of which are displayed in an easy-to-understand manner according to their themes.
The stage where the dolphins put on their show is very large and has a huge screen on which you can see the dolphins' expressions clearly.
Infection control measures are taken. Tickets can be bought online, so there is no need to stand in line. Have fun!

Visited on a Thursday morning in March. There was a crowd and thus were required to queue up for around 20 minutes to purchase the entrance tickets.
The aquarium was nice, where we are able to watch 15 minutes of live dolphin and orca training at 11am and 12pm, respectively. The performances were definitely the highlight of the aquarium.

Not keen to see these wonderful creatures captive. But it's a consolation to think that there are people who seem to genuinely care for them.

TOKI PREMIUM OUTLETS, a charming small town outlet mall, is definitely worth the visit as per many satisfied customers. Recently, winter clothing items are on sale with almost 50% off their original price. Shopping here brings not only happy shoppers but also pleasant customer service. To maximize savings, bring friends along and take advantage of the "buy 1 and get the other half off" offer.
A pleasant place to hang out with the family, eat delicious food in a variety of restaurants and take advantage of the outlet's incredible promotions

This has a very large parking area for the visiting shoppers. The way in and out of the parking can get very busy so be warned and expect a queue. This is a very large and spread out shopping district with many high street brand stores. I personally didn't see the need to come here as it was supposed to be an outlet location, but I didn't see much of a reduction if at all on the products, so I guess it is not really an outlet. Not from what I am used to anyway. The cafes and restaurants become very busy very quickly, and there will be lots of queues. I don't feel the need to return here, and to deal with the congestion of both cars and people, when there really wasn't anything special. Sorry but I can't personally recommend it.

We went on winter holidays and the parking were full at the morning time . But I am happy that they have free parking 🚗 service and have many Parkings . It is really big outlet but I love Rinku premium Outlets the most compare to any outlets in japan 🇯🇵. Toilets 🚽 are available and very clean 🧼. Credit cards 💳 and cash and mobile pay all ok but depends on the shop but mostly all is fine but it will be safe to carry cash 💰. Wheelchair ♿️ persons are ok 👌. Vending machines are available 🥤. Food 🍱 court is also available. Smoking areas 🚬 are designated so take care of that . Brands like Michael Kors , Coach , beams , Armani , diesel , franc franc , Roxy , billabong , Samantha thavasa , gap , Nike , puma , adidas , rebook , azul and many more are available. I think bus services are available as we went there by car 🚗. But taxis , buses are also available.

The Gifu World Rose Garden is a vast green space renowned for its abundant spring flowers and May-blooming roses. Visitors can enjoy picnicking by the lake or strolling through fields of colorful blooms. The park boasts an enormous parking lot, but public transportation may not be available. The highlight of the garden is a large greenhouse and Tasha's cottage, although visitors are also wowed by the entrance area featuring real roses.

Autumn Rose Festival 2023
I was able to go on a weekday before the event ended.
The weather is nice, the air is fresh, and you can see various flowers, greenery, and trees, and it's like you've come to another world...It's a soothing space.
There were many people, both male and female, who came alone.
One of the world's largest rose gardens with 5,500 roses of 17 varieties. As soon as you enter, you will be greeted by a large rose garden. There were still many blooms!
``Garden of Fragrance - Rose Corridor'' Take a tour around the world, Japan, and rare types of roses. More than half of the flowers had fallen, but the flowers were brightly colored and fragrant.
The ``Moroccan Garden'' was decorated with Moroccan materials and traditional techniques, and the entrance was decorated with star-shaped art.
There are also athletic and play equipment for children to enjoy. You can ride the road train for 300 yen.
At the flower museum, there are several types of roses on display, where you can sample the scents and enjoy the differences, and there is also a shop selling rose accessories, souvenirs, and products.
Cosmos and rose seedlings were sold at flower seedling specialty stores.
It was a little past the full bloom period for roses, but autumn coleus, zinnias, marigolds, rosehips, and cosmos were in full bloom. Hydrangeas and celosia were also blooming, which I enjoyed.
There are many photogenic spots, and the garden is very satisfying overall♪
It became a good memory ♪
⚠When walking around the park, we recommend that you refer to the ``Rose Journey Map'' that you receive when you enter the park! !
It seems that cosmos were blooming towards the back of the park from around the end of October. I missed it...(;_;)

Eummmm!! You want roses, THATS the place you need to go!!! The most beautiful arrangements of roses I’ve ever seen in my life!😱 I got the early access on the weekends and I HIGHLY recommend it!!! You get to enjoy not only the intense smell of the roses in the early hours of the day (with early access you can enter as of 7h am) BUT take the most amazing pictures with the dew on the roses petals! Plus less people in the gardens!!! Absolutely worth getting up early and paying a little extra (2000¥ instead of 1300¥ I believe).
It’s ABSOLUTELY a show stopper, worth the detour !!

Since it was not the best season, there were few flowers and it was not very impressive. But it was empty so I was able to take a leisurely stroll, which was nice. There are roses that smell great and are soothing. Also, the roses sold outdoors are in better condition than in the garden 😂
There are few places to eat and drink, and there are few take-out options. Is it fashionable for some reason? There was a shop selling Gohei mochi.
I ate at a restaurant in Center Court, and I ordered Sangenton curry and rice, but where is Sangenton? ? ? It cost 1,000 yen just for the retort curry... Although there are a number of staff members, they don't seem to want to serve customers very much, which is a shame.
It's a style where you order and then sit down, but instead of asking the place to order, it's the place where you order! ! This was said in a high-pressure manner. She was a young woman, but was she part-time? ? The impression was so bad that the beautiful roses I had been looking at were canceled out.
There is a space where you can leave your dog near the entrance gate. However, there is only a fence, there are no guards, and there is no water container. I can't help but feel uneasy about leaving my dog here...it's better not to have space to leave it unless the dog is patrolled regularly. too scary.

I visited during the later part of May. The roses were absolutely stunning! I highly recommend visiting but be sure the flowers are in bloom. It was fantastic, there were a few performers here and there. The sweet aroma of the different roses mixed together making everything smell so beautiful! There's quite a few food vendors but also spaces for picnics. There were a good number of bees buzzing around, it being flowers and all, so be aware if you have any allergies. There were so many different types of flowers and they're all well marked so you can tell which is which. It was a great experience and I am glad I was able to see the roses before going home.

Great park with interesting events and flower displays for all seasons.
The best time to visit is definitely the late spring bloom of roses in May but be prepared for large crowds. Autumn also has a beautiful display of roses but not as spectacular, although maybe more fragrant.
There are many other flowers on show throughout the park during the year with probably the best display in the furthest back corner from he entrance. There there is a field filled with different flowers throughout the year depending on the season, nemophila, sunflowers, and cockscomb have all been there at one time or another.
Can’t recommend this park enough if you are in the area.
Entrance fees change during the season, ¥1,050 per adult during peak times, ¥500 off peak, and free during the winter months. Children are free admission. A year pass is also available for ¥2,100.

Great for a day out. The park looks fairly recent, and well maintained.
It's divided in small areas like little worlds within the park.
You can get a 360 view from the tower, and take home rose trees from the shops inside.
There's also a "family area" good for pic nic and kids playing with water.
If you go by train, make sure to get off at Godo station. Then it's about half an hour walk (uphill)
Google map might be sending you to the west of the park but there's no entrance on that side. You'll end up walking all the way around the forest. Speaking from experience.
See map of the park attached for guidance.
Enjoy!
The Iwamura Castle Ruins are located on a secluded mountain and consist of stone walls and a turret from a 12th-century castle. It is considered one of the top three mountain castles in Japan, but only known among select individuals. Visitors should be aware that it requires a steep 2km hike up and down the mountain to reach the ruins. English translations are available for explanations, as well as QR codes for CG photos of what the castle would look like.
The foundation stones of the castle are still as strong and stable as the day the were laid hundreds of years ago.
The location, high on a hill, gives a commanding view of the local area although the surrounding forest has grown tall and obstructed the view from when the castle was occupied.

I had read on the internet that it would be open from 5 o'clock, so I arrived just after 5 o'clock, but there were quite a few cars parked there.
After checking in, I was able to ride the gondola at 5:15. I went there and found out that it takes 15 minutes to get to the top of the mountain by gondola, and 10 minutes by lift after walking 300 meters up the slope, so if you calculate the time of daylight, you need to be careful because if you don't get there early, you won't be able to make it in time. .
The weather forecast said that the lowest temperature in Achi Village was 8℃, so I went there wearing winter gear (Heattech, parka, and down jacket), but it was extremely cold, so I recommend bringing more layers. It's cold at the top of the mountain, but the lifts along the way are also exposed to the wind. People who seem to be repeat customers seem to be careful about preparing things like blankets, throw blankets, and hot drinks.
I was shivering in the cold as I waited for the sun to come, but the clouds hanging over the mountains really looked like the ocean, and the way the sky slowly turned orange through the gaps in the clouds was so magical and beautiful that I couldn't resist taking a photo. I tried it, but it's no match for the naked eye.

Tsumago-juku is an enchanting historic town, situated in the foothills of Kiso, boasting a range of restored 18th-century homes, a well-preserved 12th-century shrine and a stunning 16th-century temple. This beautifully located village is the perfect starting point for moderate level hiking tours with Magome being an ideal spot to grab lunch at one of its quaint restaurants.

Tsumago, located in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, is a historic village along the Nakasendo trail. This trail, once a major highway connecting Kyoto and Edo (now Tokyo) during the Edo period, offers a glimpse into Japan’s rich cultural past.
Tsumago is renowned for its well-preserved traditional buildings, making it a popular destination for tourists seeking an authentic experience. Strolling through its narrow streets lined with traditional wooden houses, visitors can feel transported back in time. The village maintains strict regulations to preserve its historical ambiance, ensuring a truly immersive experience.

Our first stop on the historic Nakasendo trail. Even though it's the smallest post town compared to Naraijuku, but it still possesses its old world charm with stunning natural beauty. A 10-min bus ride from a nearby train station Nagiso and you are transported back in time. Make sure you reserve your accomodation at one of the local ryokans in advance. Bring cash as some of the shops don't have contactless payment. You can withdraw cash from the post office.

A beautiful place to go for Autumn foliage!
What to do here:
- Admire the nature
- See the old houses with eye-pleasing architecture style
- Try soba noodle, eat dango and goten mochi (fried rice ball)
- Try local Shinano beef!
- Take a lots of picture!
But remember to get here in the morning! It's get dark quick after 4PM and most shop close at 5PM. Also try to stay here for a night in traditional ryokan, much cheaper than ryokan in big cities but still have impeccable service, room, onsen bath & food!

Beautiful traditional Japanese town in the mountains. Visited in January during off-season so it wasn't very lively, and really nice for a stroll. We paid 500¥ for parking, all other services are optional. Tsukechi Gorge is a renowned natural attraction known for its vibrant autumn foliage, steep ravines, and refreshing waterfalls. Visitors can enjoy a scenic hiking trail that includes a suspension bridge with stunning views of the surrounding area. The water in the gorge is famous for being delicious and free to drink from a tap located at the entrance. There are also food vendors selling kakigori and ice lollies at the front of the park.
Nice ~30 mins hike with easy-to-mid difficulty. Very relaxing and amazing to see the waterfalls. Serene atmosphere. Convenient store at the entrance/exit with restroom to replenish.

Gero Onsen Gassho Village is a cultural museum situated near the Giro station, which showcases folk exhibits, craft workshops and a teahouse. The recreated mountain village looks meticulously preserved and allows visitors to enter inside each house to witness the lifestyle of people in ancient times. A hut house offers free dance performances while others feature displays on traditional living.

There were a lot of exhibits and exhibits, and I was able to learn about what life was like in the past. It was raining, but I was glad that I was able to borrow an umbrella for free. Gassho Village, with its calming atmosphere, is one of the places you should visit when you go to Gero Onsen. Perhaps because it was March, there were clay dolls decorated everywhere. There is a roller coaster in the back that is suitable for children over 3 years old. You can ski for 100 yen a time, and it seems to be quite fun.

Unlike Shirakawa where the thatch houses are working houses, the ones in Gero have been made into museums and it houses antique dolls, documents, tools and equipment showing what was like living in these houses in the old times.
At the top of the hill in the village museum, there's a fun slide that's about 180m long. Cost 100yen for a quick ride back to the foot of the hill.

Gassho Mura Village is a must-visit attraction in Gero. It's like a mini version of Shirakawago, but it's more of a museum that showcases how ancient Japanese people used to live. It's an interesting and educational experience that is definitely worth your time.
The highlight of the village is the long slide on the hillside. It's so much fun, and I highly recommend trying it out. It only costs 100 yen, and it's best to bring coins if you want to try it. A small river gorge with huge rocks that you can scramble about. Beautiful scenery and one of the great view of Kiso. Park at the 7-11 carpark. There is an entrance fee of 200 yen.

Absolutely stunning. Visiting in good weather is recommended, as it is outside. You can just view it from above, or climb over the rocks to the small shrine. If you choose the later strongly suggest shoes with good tread/grip.

I went there on foot from Agematsu Station. It took me about 45 minutes to get to Risenji, where I paid 200 yen for the admission. Climbing up the rocks at the art park was a bit challenging. I had to hold firmly onto the rocks and jump from one to another. 😂 The next day my shoulders ached. On the other hand, it was one of a kind experience.

Stumbled upon this gorgeous gorge by accident. It is a friendly and calm place with significantly fewer people around. There is a walking track along the valley and a park nearby. There is a shrine built on one of the rocks, which looks beautiful. There is a railway track which passes through a valley.

Beautiful spot, 25 minutes from the Agematsu station. It is fun climbing your way up to the little shrine.
200 yens to go through the temple, it is definitely worth it. There is a little park with public restrooms.

unfortunately the bridge to the actual gorge was closed, but the area surrounding it was nice.

Parked at the car park near the petrol station Eneos.
Interesting and beautiful place, fun to climb the rocks.

The rock formations here are beautiful, and are allowed to be entered on foot, if you like a challenge. The place is completely free, and connects on the east side to a temple, and on the south end to a artsy type of park.
Parking is free, near the shops. Farther to the south there's a very large parking lot that connects to the aforementioned park. This place is not wheelchair accessible in any way, shape, or form. I would recommend visitors to have a reasonable level of physical condition, especially if they intend to get onto the rocks.

Very beautiful scenery! Make sure you have good walking shoes and comfortable clothing before you go. There is a lot of stairs and steep hikes. There are multiple observation decks and bridges to view the scenery. However, watch your step because it's a long way down.

22 min walk from Agematsu JR station.
Very well worth the detour if you anyway have a Japan Rail Pass.
Note: The google pin here is slightly off - walk towards the 7-11 and you’ll spot the traditional gate to the gorge from 7-11’s parking lot. Y200 entrance fee.

Mt. Ontake is a towering volcanic mountain that lies on the border of Gifu and Nagano prefectures. It boasts of crater lakes and sweeping views of the surrounding peaks, making it a stunning natural wonder. The mountain is visible from afar, appearing brilliantly white for most parts of the year. However, since October 2014, it has been emitting plumes of steam due to volcanic eruptions that resulted in the tragic loss of 63 lives.
A beautiful mountain on the border of Gifu & Nagano prefectures, Mt Ontake is awesome!
Seen from afar Ontake-san is brilliant white for most of the year, and since October 2014, a plume of steam has been visible when the volcano erupted killing 63 people.
It is still on volcanic alert level 2 (lowered from level 1 in August 2017), so it is still closed for hiking. Lower areas are still accessible but the peak and surrounds are off limits.

We've been here in late september 2017. The vegetaton in the higher altitudes were already turning into red.
We parked our car in the parking lot of the cable car. Then we took to it to the base point of the climb. Th climb is not that easy and you need to be in a relatively good shape. Alternatively, you can just climb it very slowly :-). As for safety, the trail is safe with no obvious obstacles.
After 1-1.5 hours of climb you'll reach a resting point. From here the view starts to be amazig. From the resting point to the mountain top is about 1 hour or less. Just before the mountain top (which was closed and you could only see it from the first pond) there is a hut.
The first pond was not that beutiful. Looked like a muddy construction site. Unfortunatley for us, we started the climb around noon so we did not have sufficient time to see the other ponds.
Make sure to start the climb around 8AM so you'll sufficient time for the entire journey, as the cable car closes around 4PM.
The scenery is amazig once you leave the forest. Absolutley recommended.

I pray for the souls of the people who died by the eruption.
Mountain climbing is prohibited as of January 2019.
Since there is no forest from the hilly side, the view while climbing is good,
but summer it is hot in the sunlight.
My recommendation is the snowfall period.
In the morning, you can climb the large slope of tight snow freely.
It is an independent peak and there are no forests,
so there is no place to avoid avoiding blowing in the wind.
I want to climb the sunny and calm day.
If you climb up from Ropeway Top station you can go and back in one day.
More preferably, if you wear skiing, or if you climb taking it,
When descending the mountain you can skiing freely on a wonderful large slope.
It is a very long course of about 3 km to the top of the station and more than 4 km in total to the foot station.
It is unthinkable to walk down this course during the snowfall period.
Skiing climbing is the best.

Sacred mountain. Little bit scary because it is active volcano, But hicking was really great experience. Different. Just being there above 8th station, that feeling I will remember all my life. On 2014. there was eruption where 35 people died, we climbed on 3rd anniversary without knowing that.
Must be there around 8AM if want to hike in the mountain, to see the lakes. Can't get to the top,it is closed, but can go till 2nd lake, just little bit under.
Fir climb it is open trail from the ropeway only. Other trails are closed. Ropeway is working from 8-16:30 so must take care about timing.
There are not so many people what is good, because it is really the place where should clean the mind. Quiet, calm, wind, smoke from vulcano, many shrines, statues, offerings on the way.
Will go again.
View is great, it is around 3000m -9000ft, breathtaking. Lakes are really beautiful. 2nd lake had shrunk little bit,it was in september. End of september, it was really fresh in the morning and evening. It was just a start of autumn colors. I went there one more time around 10th october and it was beautiful autumn time. There are few huts there on the trail, 8th and 9th station huts were working, could order tea,buy water, snacks. But should prepare everything before because of timing. Down at the ropeway can buy everything.
In the ropeway building, next to the ticket place there is paper where you should write name, mobile phone,route- if you do that you will get free coffee( it is good one, drink on a way up while climbing on a rope way)
Dont forget waterfall! It is really amazing.

Roadside station Kiso-fukushima is a toll road rest stop located in Japan, offering picturesque forested mountain views to travelers. The station features a farmers' market where visitors can purchase fresh produce and other goods, as well as a soba noodle restaurant serving up delicious meals. This stop is not your typical roadside attraction and provides a refreshing change of pace.
(Translated by Google) It's a roadside station along National Route 19, but I don't know why it's difficult to see Google Maps, but when I zoomed in, I managed to find it at the roadside station, so no one has written a review, but I'm not sure why. I'll try it.
This roadside station has a very large parking lot, and you can park a lot. There were a few large trucks, but there was space to park them in the back. There seem to be few houses around here, so I think it's relatively easy to sleep in your car.
When I come to this roadside station, I always try the Chinese dumplings in the photo. The gyoza here is very delicious. It's made by China. This roadside station also has a regular market and souvenir shops, so I think it's a very interesting roadside station. I didn't take any photos this time, but the restaurant here also looks really delicious. I would like to eat there next time. This roadside station is highly recommended.

Hida Folk Village is an open-air museum situated 2km west of Takayama. It showcases over 30 well-preserved traditional houses from the Edo period, characterized by their thatched roofs and wooden construction. The village includes a former village head's house, logging huts, and gassho-zukuri houses with steep thatched roofs originating from Shirakawa-go.
I love this place even though I have not much time to spend there. It would be nice to visit during other season. You can come here instead of Shiragawagoe for experience the heritage house and history.

This was a very nice attraction showing the different styles houses from the region. It was a very nice walk in autumn and was very interesting, I wish I had more time to look at everything properly. Highly recommend. It took me approximately 20minutes walk from Takayama Station and the entry fee was 700 yen. I got there early and it was nice and quiet.

Definitely recommend visiting if you're in Takayama. You get to learn about how people used to live, work, make and store food, make roofs etc. in the past. There are multiple areas where you can feel like a kid again e.g. learning how to juggle with traditional juggling balls, solve puzzles or shoot a bamboo water gun. It was surprisingly very fun! The park is also simply beautiful, with views of the mountains and the valley too.

A fantastic time capsule of early Japanese history. Beautifully set, give yourself a good 2hrs to explore fully. Shoes must be taken off to explore further inside the houses. Stamps are present in many for your travel book. During winter many paths are shut due to snowfall, many of the houses have alternate paths, so you can still get to them, however some will not be accessible.

Truly amazing.
Personally, I went during the winter and when the village is covered in snow it was absolutely breathtaking. Unfortunately during the winter, certain sections are closed off due to snow and icy conditions, however the majority are still open and accessible. Tickets are cheap and you can easily spend 2ish hours exploring all the buildings and reading about the history.
You can enter basically every building and they have slippers by the entrance of each building. It was quite informative in that the purposes of each building in the village are clearly displayed with many tidbits on their history and function.
Most of the pictures I saw were from spring but somehow it is just as beautiful if not more in the winter. Definitely an amazing visit anytime of year.

Very nice stroll to have among history. The place is very well preserved and gives you the chance to have both a cultural and a naturalistic experience at the same time. Very recommended especially if you visit in summer and you look for a fresher place to spend some nice time. They have a spot by the lake where you can borrow paper umbrellas, a traditional vest and a hat to take a nice picture.

Such a great experience to see all these unique buildings in such a beautiful setting. The Koi fish lake was stunning in all of its autumn colours. Set aside a couple of hours for this and if it rains they have umbrellas you can loan for free.

Very interesting and historical folk village of one the Japanese ancestors with their unique pointed roof. Amazing use of ropes and knots that hold the whole structure of houses together including special crafted wood and timbers used. Different rooms and floor levels for various purposes. Planting roof top with some greens.
Also the circular and rectangular padi rice fields (miniature) demonstrating their farming days then.
There is a live demonstration of a man crafting various wooden articles and two women doing some sewings for sales.
Worth of ¥700 per person entry fees.

Beautiful outdoor area featuring a variety of traditional homes to explore! It was fantastic to see and far less crowded than its more popular counterpart a bit further north. You can pickup a joint admission ticket and round trip bus fare from the main station in town which is convenient and saves 100yen.

It was snowing heavily when we went here so didn’t really stay long enough to enjoy the place but we went to almost every “house” If you can’t go to Shirakawa-go, this place will somehow make up for it.

A lovely and quaint folk village complex about 35 mins walk from Takayama or a 15 min bus ride.
We went on a clear autumn day in October and it was a lovely afternoon walking through the buildings and different parts of the grounds.
Entry is 700 Yen per person which was well worth it. The village allows you to explore how life was like for the people living there and the exhibits are really interactive - there are even games you can play as part of your visit. You learn about their living conditions, the farming and building methods as well as historical Japanese cultural references.
One of the highlights was watching a wood carver make an owl out of wood which was incredible to see - an art passed down that was intricate and beautiful.
A worthwhile visit for the price and you could easily spend 2 hours here (the map you're given gives you different routes you can take depending on the time you have, the max of which is 1 hour but I think you could spend longer there if you'd like to) - would highly recommend!

Fun, educational and interesting. The Hida Folk Village (or Hida no Sato) is an open-air museum where you go back in time about 100 to 500 years. Thanks to about thirty houses, barns, watermills, shrines and so on, you can relive the past of a Japanese village. In addition to the various architectural styles, of which the gassho-zukuri is the most striking, you will become acquainted with utensils that were used in household, work and daily life. And in workshops you can discover how Japan's famous handicrafts are made, such as wood carving, tie-dying, (silk)weaving, and lacquer work. All in all a very interesting and educational destination that I highly recommend.

Quiet time exploring the village with much historical features! There were activities for visitors to enjoy and really scenic view.
I would imagine it nicer during winter when the houses are covered in snow but it’s was still a pleasant experience.
Entry fee is 700 yen, and it’s about 10-15 mins bus ride from where the main takayama station is!
But the bus departs in 1-hour interval, it’s either a 1 hour or 2 hour visit.

Amazing place to visit in Takayama. If you do not like crowds, go as soon as they open at 8:30. I had an hour in the morning in which I was the only visitor in sight. Tourists quickly appeared after an hour and it became more difficult to enjoy the property without disruption. There is lots of information on the buildings, the property, and the history of everything on the premises. It was very well taken care of and there are interesting things for children too, like games and viewing stations of the mountains afar. Signage is in Chinese, Japanese, and English. Easy to get there on a local bus.

Located in Takayama, Hida no Sato or aka Hida Folk Village should be included in your plan if you happen to be near the area. Ticket price is reasonable at 700¥ per adult. The premise of the museum is full of little dashboards and decorated rooms that teach you the history of the buildings and structures. The steep roofs of the houses is made of straw, so it kind of resembles the ones you'd find in Shirakawa-Go, like a mini version of the famous town.

Around 40 minutes walk from Takayama Station. This place is a beautiful village that features traditional houses with a beautiful lake in the middle. Do note that there are busses that go there but they run really infrequently.
Hida no Sato is like a scaled down version of Shirakawago but it doesn’t make it any less impressive.
Went at the end of March but it was snowing heavily that week. So the entire village was covered in a nice layer of white powdered snow. Adding to the whole atmosphere of the place. They have little stations to collect stamps too if you have a notebook for that.
On top of that they have free boots rental to help with walking around the snow.

Really enjoyed this place. Was a bit out of the way to walk to but otherwise was a breath of fresh air to explore and see.
All of the exhibit is well signed in English (and Japanese) so you can read up about the history of what it was like living in Japanese villages. Many other exhibits in Japan don't have this level of detail so it was lovely to see.
You can also go in to most of the buildings and explore, and since it's fairly out of the way there's few tourists.
We visited start of December at about 2pm and found the temperature cold but manageable.

This is a must do if you visit Takayama. It was snowing that day so I could enjoy the Folk Village under a white coat and with a small frozen lake. Simply beautiful. You learn about the old Japanese farming culture, how they were organized in a village like this and how they survived freezing winters.
We were around 10 people in the village in the middle of the afternoon so I think people somehow don’t come here, but you should. Don’t miss this hidden gem.

It was wonderful to witness the preservation of heritage in the area. My family and I had a great time imagining what life was like in the past as we explored the traditional homes made of straw. Although we did not stay for the illumination, we did try ringing the bell and making a wish.

Visited on 18th March. Entrance fee is Y700 per pax.
It is a nice village turned into a museum. The place is very peaceful and beautiful. There are still some snow on the roofs on the traditional houses, enhancing the beauty of the museum. There isn't much towards the museum and mainly we went there mainly for the view.

Best to buy the bus ticket combo with the entrance at Nohi terminal counter, this saves you 100yen. So total 800yen 2way bus including the entrance ticket.
The museum opens until 5pm but the last direct bus from there to the bus terminal is at around 4.50ish so it’s best to leave from the terminal, at the latest at 3pm. That way you have more than 1h to explore.
The bus pattern is 9, 9.45, 10, 10.45, 11, 11.45. time it correctly that way you don’t have to wait for 45mins.
Beware that the bust platform 1 is shared with other bus routes! When we were there waiting with other tourists, the bus driver didn’t stop for more than 5seconds and take off without signalling to us that it’s the bus to hida, that pisses all of us as the next bus was 3.45pm, we only had less than 1h to explore, because of this slack bus driver and we needed to wait for another 45mins for the next bus.
Hida village can be covered within 1h at a faster pace if you don’t go in and out of the houses, but ideally 1.5h at least, to give you time to enjoy the scenery, take pictures, use the stamps, going in and out of the houses, take off and put back your shoes (if you go to every house it will take about 2h).
As you need to take off shoes when you enter the wooden area of the house, you want to wear thick socks. Some upper rooms are opened too, so you can go upstairs and see the architecture of the roof.
It can be slippery during winter hence many routes are closed for walking but this does not affect the experience. They were doing it for safety reasons, although it feels like we didn’t get to see some areas.
Overall it’s worth it, especially if you only have a day or two in Takayama, saving you from going to shiragawago.
Since the place is not that big, it’s best to check the crowd level using google map, it wouldn’t be nice having too many tourists there especially inside those small houses.

Highly recommend for people who would like to get to know rural Japan. Great for those who plan to go to Shirakawa (as an extension) or those who would like to have the Shirakawa-go experience without the crowds. 10 out of 10, don’t plan it for the end of the day, as there are so many expositions, houses to drop by, that it is worth reserving at least 2-3h for the attraction.

Tourists can visit Takayama Jinya, a restored government building in Japan with a Japanese garden. This historical complex served as the local government office for officials sent from Tokyo and was in use until 1969. Now open to the public as a museum, visitors can explore the traditional tatami mat rooms used for meetings, officers, and residential spaces. Takayama Jinya offers insights into life under the Tokugawa Shogunate and showcases Edo period architecture.
With the entry fee costing ¥440, you will get great experience immersing yourself into Edo Bakufu era (17-19th century). Takayama Jinya was a branch office of the Edo Bakufu (government) from 1692 until 1868 when new government was formed (Meiji government). This place is designated as a National historic site and is the ONLY existing building of its kind in Japan!!!
The winter season in particular is recommended for foreigners who want to enjoy beautiful snow :)

This is a typical government office of the Edo period very well maintained to give visitors an idea of what administration buildings looked like as regarding their day to day affairs. There are exhibits on the invitation of guests of different ranks with distinctions made in the separate rooms and even entrances for the type of visitor. There’s a part of the building dedicated to hearing out petitions from grieving citizens and a torture chamber for suspected and guilty offenders. There’s also an exhibit or a room and sort of palanquin for messages exclusively from Edo. For adults entry costs ¥400, while ages below 16 pay half that.

A building designated as a national historic site, located about a 10-minute walk from Takayama Station in Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture.
The site of the former residence of the Kanamori clan, the lord of Takayama Castle, when they moved to another country, was used as a base for governing Hida Province as a territory under the direct control of the Edo shogunate, and for 176 years, the magistrates and Hida district lords conducted politics there.
The building is divided into ``office space'' where the magistrates and district leaders carry out political affairs, ``living space'' where the families of the magistrates and district leaders live, and a ``rice storehouse'' where annual tax rice is stored!
The only remaining main building in Japan is the ruins of the local magistrate's office, and although it was a weekday when I visited, I felt that many foreign tourists were visiting and enjoying the splendid beauty of Japan.

Visited this summer, on a Saturday. Not many people so there wasn't a line at the ticket booth. Learned about how Takayama Jinja is a unique building in all of Japan. Each section has a small English transcript or description of what can be seen. There are also QR code posts that lead to links that talk about specific areas in detail. There is no airconditioner of course, but if you're lucky a slight breeze might just come through while taking a brief rest at the "living room" - this area overlooks the garden and the pond.
At specific dates during summer, a special kabuki performance is held in the big room (3 rooms really, with the sliding doors taken off).

About 10 minutes walk from Takayama Station.
It is said to be the only place in Japan where the main building as a ``jinya'' still exists, so it is worth seeing as a valuable historical site and is a must-see for history buffs.
The inside of the camp is quite large, including the workplace area of Edo period officials, the living area of the magistrate, storage area, and exhibition area.
It will take about an hour to take a thorough look.
The inside is larger than it looks from the outside and is worth seeing. Anyway, my impression is that there is a wide area that you can tour.
The atmosphere is like a compact version of Nijo Castle in Kyoto, where the Imperial Restoration took place.
It is valuable as the only remaining main building in Japan of the magistrate and district office, and from a historical perspective it is quite a sight to behold.

You take your shoes off at the entrance, and they give you a plastic bag to hold them in until you leave. It's a big and well-maintained building that gives you the look and feel of the Edo period. Feels pretty surreal to be able to casually stroll through a piece of history. There's a section with lots of historical artifacts and documents to look at too. Overall, it's a pretty nice visit for a little bit of immersion. There's quite a bit of empty space in the rooms though. I do wish the place felt more "lived in"

You have to take off your shoes upon entering and the floor was a little cold.
It was an old government office that is nicely maintained. There are a lot of historical documents and items.

Good to get some insights into how local government worked in the Edo period. We followed another tour group so got some free insights 😅 you must take your shoes off and it was freezing cold so that was rather unpleasant.

The entrance of the jinya is unexpectedly simple and modest. However, the interior paints a different story. Amazing handcrafted details! Visiting the place is like going through a maze. But when we reached the inner courtyard, we were greeted by beautifully curated garden. This surely made visit worth it.
Across a bridge in this quaint town is the famous Sanmachi Street, where tourists go for its shops set in caeefully preserved buildings from Edo period. A "must try" is their juicy Hida beef barbecue. My kids simply can't get enough of them.

Old traditional Japanese house complex of a provincial governor and magistrate’s office that was turned into a museum. For a small entrance fee you can explore the whole house and barn and be transported back into the Edo Period. The house is well preserved and a great place to visit.

Although I went because it is one of the landmarks in the area and didn’t have too much expectations, it was quite interesting to learn about the history and the importance of Takayama in the Tokunawa Shogunate era. The place is larger than you think and it can take you up to 30 minutes to walk around it. It was few English translations and be prepared because you must remove your shoes and in winter the floor gets very cold.

1 Chome-5 Hachikenmachi, Takayama, Gifu 506-0012, Japan
Sanmachi Suji, also known as the three narrow streets of Hida Takayama, is a charming area in the heart of the city. These streets are lined with traditional merchant houses, restaurants, shops, and breweries that date back to the Edo period. Despite being untouched by World War II bombings, these buildings have been remarkably preserved for centuries. This historic district offers a unique experience as you wander through atmospheric old buildings and explore museums and sake breweries.
Takayama old town is a town dating back to Edo era. They preserved the old buildings in a good way that you feel you are back to that time. Mostly they are now shops, cafes and restaurants, so bring some money to buy souvenirs or eat local food.
Abdul Muizz — Google review
I walked there in an evening and there were very few people on the street. So it was very calm and quite. Also it was beautiful with the remaining snow.

One of the streets of Takayama’s old town. A street filled with traditional picturesque wooden houses. There are plenty of shops and food places around here including sake tasting and even miso tasting shops. The place can feel a bit touristy. A good way to avoid the crowds is to go early morning or maybe visit the side streets. They’re equally as pretty but with a lot less tourists.

Takayama is a tourist trap. This town, Is 99% souvenir shop. Is a real tourist trap masked as a preserve old town. I love Japan. But trust me, skip Takayama. Just look at my pics. Every shop is the same. Cheap tourist goods. Fridge magnets. Etc. Can't even find a real cafe here that is not cater to tourist .

Sanmachi Suji is a group of three main streets in the heart of Takayama, recognized as a Historically Significant Traditional Building Preservation Area, which means that all the old private houses and shop buildings are kept in pristine condition. In fact, it is considered one of the best-preserved areas in Japan, earning it the title of "Little Kyoto."
Even though the buildings are over 300 years old, many still function as restaurants, souvenir shops, and sake warehouses. It takes a few hours to properly explore all three parallel streets that make up the historic quarter, and a little longer if you stop at some of the museums here. A truly unique and splendid place!

Nice shopping area in Takayama with photo opportunities with the old houses. It can get very touristy though so for the best photos, probably mornings at 9-10am would be good when the shops are open and the light is nice (winter season).
The shops all close by 4-5pm in winter and there is nothing to do after in the area.
Luke Goh — Google review
One of the most historical places we visited in Japan. Mostly, the shop closes on this street by 5 or 6 in the evening. But if you happen to see the stores open, the street is really alive. So much Japanese feels.
There are Japanese foods to try. And really, you should try. Souvenir shops are also open.
During the night, taking a photograph is magical. Specially when someone is riding on a bicycle. Should be added on your Japan to visit places. 🇯🇵❤️

Nice spot with preserved old merchant houses and some great cafes and sake breweries to visit. A must visit if you're in Takayama. Definitely try to come here earlier in the day as it only consists out of a few streets and gets pretty full in the afternoon.

A few blocks of traditional Japanese houses, residences, stores, and cafés. A lot of tourists of course, but it's a nice piece of the city to stroll through. The Miyagawa Morning Market is a popular local market in Takayama, located beside the river. It is filled with fresh vegetables, fruits, flowers, and other local products and is a great place to buy arts and crafts from local vendors.
Riverside markets in the morning is good for the soul. 😌 Especially if you get to try a variety of free food tasting along the way!
Vast selection of vegetables, pickled goods, souvenirs, etcetera. 🥕
The strong flow of the river makes the natural ambiance more calming. Worth waking up earlier than usual. 😉

The morning market, where local producers sell various goods, some bonsai, some gardens, some handmade souvenirs. The market takes place in the street along the river. It works for a short time, about a couple of hours in the morning. What really attracts attention is that you can meet various and interesting people. Also in the same street there are constantly operating shops. If this street is passed and you still have time - you need to cross the street to the south side and there you will see the spirit of the old quarters with shops, Japanese snacks or traditional Japanese dishes and drinks. You can really have fun for the whole half day.
Liudas Vitartas — Google review
Good experience to enjoy walking here in the morning. Open early morning until 12:00 in the midday. There are groceries, souvenirs, Japanese sweets, and many more at here. Situated near to Miyagawa river, you can go down near the river.
Abdul Muizz — Google review
I went during a cold snowy morning. It was super tough to go through the whole market and enjoy as the snow was so heavy. The stalls itself sold mainly produce and didn’t feel too touristy as there aren’t many souvenirs or food items. I saw just a few like the takoyaki and there was a coffee shop that sold barista level coffee poured into a edible cup. Other than that there wasn’t anything they really caught my eye.
I would say if you are considering to stay the night just to check this out, you can give it a miss.

Nice to see local foods and some trinkets. Kids will love the nearby river with large koi fish. There is a rice ball eatery nearby for snacks.

The market is relatively small but enough to hold your interest for an hour until the main streets open up. A variety of local produce, eateries and knick knacks for tourists. You can also buy fish food at one stall and wander down to the river ramp to feed the ducks and carp which keeps the kids interested.

Nice little morning market. Definitely more lively on the weekend. (We wanted to try the coffee served in a pastry-cup but they were closed on Monday.)
The sellers were all very friendly. It’s an interesting place to try some snacks (or mini apples) and pick up some souvenirs. I hoped to find some local honey, which I did, but was way over by budget. (It must have been very very good. Or maybe October is the wrong season.)
The stall opposite the stairs leading down to the river sells small bags food (100 Yen) to feed the fish. They’re not displayed too prominently.
This museum has a hall where people can see beautiful floats used for the Takayama Festival. The festival is famous for its colorful parade and ornate floats, and it is held every spring and autumn.
A peaceful place to stop by for cultural study about the show. The staff was so kind. They have the English Audio that explain the meaning of every piece and action made for the festival. They also mentioned that the collection changes every four months, according to the weather. So a revisit is a must!

The floats are very impressive and interesting, but there are only 5 of them. And there isn't very much information written in the museum, it's all on the audio guide. So if you're not a fan of audio guides, like me, you're basically out of luck. It's quite a small museum so the 1000 yen price seems a bit steep.

Very informative with wonderful pieces of history and art preserved for the public to see. There was a lot of information that had not been translated from Japanese to English, however we were able to enjoy the artistry of objects. The audio guides are free and give a wonderful rundown of the cultural heritage of the exhibits on display.
Keep in mind the exhibits rotate, so a specific yatai (float) may not be on display when you visit.

This is where the REAL Yatai are placed. If you have followed me, you can two places to learn about Yatai. Find out more.
That’s why when you do, you can take pictures but no flash is allowed due to preservation of the colour of the yatai. So there will be instructions everywhere to advise you.
The ticket includes the audio, please let the counter know which language you prefer. There is also a video to give you some lights to how the festival looks like.
Again, if you are like me, touring and coming here to learn more about the culture and heritage, come here! At the end this is part of the UNSECO cultural and heritage of Takayama.
Also there is another museum to show the Nikko Toshogu. I have been there! Was really awesome too.

I visited the museum with floats (Yatai) that are listed as UNESCO intangible cultural heritage.
The museum is located inside Hachiman-gu Sakurayama Shrine.
The star attractions? Stunning floats that are true masterpieces, adorned with lacquer, vibrant paintwork, exquisite woodwork, intricate metalwork, and impressive smithery.
The size of these floats is astounding! Imagine the Daihachi-Tai with wheels over 1.56 meters and the Hou-ou-tai showcasing a Phoenix with a wingspan of 1.8 meters and height of 8.8 meters! 😲
My absolute favourite was the Hotei-tai float, home to a dancing marionette. It takes 8 puppeteers, maneuvering 36 strings inside the float, to make this marionette perform its awe-inspiring jumps and somersaults 😲 I had the chance to watch a behind-the-scenes video of this in the visual room.
Don't miss the last photo for a close-up glimpse of the small, but mighty marionette.
The Gold shrine in the photo is a portable shrine called Mikoshi and weights about 2.5 tonnes 😱 80 people and two long bars are needed to carry the shrine.
All the floats are located in an exhibition hall with 10 metre ceiling height 🫣 These floats are changed three times a year so people can see different ones when visiting 😲
Just think of the teamwork required to navigate these behemoths through the crowd-filled streets. That's what I call the spirit of a matsuri! 🙌

Merchants and samurais used to pass through Narai, and similar other post towns when they are travelling back and fro from Kyoto to Tokyo (Edo). This is a scenic town at the foot of a hill (at the end of Narai town, where one can take a shower hike up to see the entire rows of houses flanking a single road. The shrine in the middle of the town is an interesting visit too with a large tree.
In Summer, it is best to visit in the morning or afternoon (after 2pm) as the sun direction will create shade on either side of the path so it's a more pleasant walk.
Parking is convenient at the roadside station and the town is connected by a scenic rail that cuts through the valley to Narai village.

It was sort of , yes , an older city feel but arriving it wasn't quite what I thought it was and still there is some modern touches to the OLD CITY area that eh , idk mixed feelings there. Couldn't get a good shot either at times cause there are cars driving up and down too. I really didn't like it there so much. Sorry I am a purist when it comes to original and old things even down to seeing the Incan ruins , ancient Rome , Greece, and the pyramids.... so any touch of modern kills it for me.

We arrived today at Narai-juku at around 14.30 and continued walking for about 15 minutes. Indeed, most of the buildings are old but still well maintained.

What a charming place! It's my favorite among the postal towns. I visited in mid-August during their Shrine's annual festival, and surprisingly, it wasn't as crowded as I expected. It felt like a journey back in time, and I absolutely enjoyed the local atmosphere. I strongly recommend checking out the Former Nakamura Family Residence to get a peek inside their traditional homes.

A fun glimpse into historic shops and homes from the Edo period. Touring through one of the family homes was definitely worth the small admission fee (300JPY). I love that all the shops are small businesses, it was cool to chat with owners and ask them questions. It wasn’t all mass-made kitschy objects, there were lots of handmade souvenirs to browse.
Everything closes by ~4pm in the fall 2023 and it gets quite cold, just be aware of that when planning your trip. The train runs only every 60-90 minutes. Not too crowded either, there were definitely a number of tourists but not at all overwhelming, it was easy to find time to explore each shop and chat with the small business owners.

Perhaps it was a Monday..., the place was rather quiet (& I'm not complaining) and most shops were shut.
Beautiful little old town with old persevered houses. We were here in autumn so there were red n orange leaves to dry the background. I'm wondering during summer, what could be the enchanting factor.
There are no admission charges.

Narai-Juku, nestled within the picturesque Kiso Valley in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, stands as a time-honored gem embodying the essence of the Edo period’s post town culture. As one of the most well-preserved and charming examples of its kind, Narai-Juku beckons travelers to step back in time and immerse themselves in the rich history and traditions of old Japan.
Established along the Nakasendo, one of the five major highways connecting Edo (modern-day Tokyo) to Kyoto during the Edo period, Narai-Juku flourished as a vital rest stop and trading hub for weary travelers and merchants journeying between the imperial capital and the seat of the shogunate. Its strategic location amidst lush mountains and pristine rivers made it a pivotal point along the route, offering respite, refreshment, and commerce to those traversing the rugged terrain.
Today, Narai-Juku stands as a beautifully preserved testament to its storied past, with its well-preserved traditional buildings, cobblestone streets, and tranquil atmosphere transporting visitors to a bygone era. Strolling through its charming thoroughfare, lined with quaint wooden inns, merchant houses, and historic landmarks, one can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia for a simpler time.
Whether exploring its cultural heritage at the local museum, sampling regional delicacies at traditional eateries, or simply soaking in the serene ambiance of this historic enclave, Narai-Juku offers a captivating journey into Japan’s rich historical tapestry, inviting travelers to experience the timeless beauty of its post town charm.

I always have a soft spot for quaint Japanese post town like Takayama and Narai-juku. No regret taking a 2-hr drive here one way from Kawaguchiko. Very little foreign tourists and the vibe is simply charming. There are souvenir shops, cafes and local restaurants. They may looked like they are closed but they are open for business. It’s a 1km+ long street lined with shops on both sides. Be prepared to spend at least 2-3hrs especially if taking a break for snack, coffee or meal.

It's not a very large facility, but it has souvenirs and restaurants. Some reviews said that the soba was delicious, but since I was planning to eat in Matsumoto, I decided to just snack on the wasabi croquette. It's expensive at 250 yen per piece, but it's crispy and has a great amount of wasabi and flavor. If the weather is nice, you can take a relaxing break while admiring the scenery outside.

They are close all shops soon, not available at evening to eat here. Only parking, toilets ok. But its good place to visit huge dam in walking distance.

I stopped by on a touring trip from Matsumoto to Takayama.
Arrived before opening at 9am.
I finished the toilet and waited for 10 minutes while rehydrating to buy the last souvenir ☝️
The gates are finally open (lol)
Tsukudani? I bought it and left it behind.
Once the new road is built, this road will no longer be accessible, so will it end in a few years?
I'm curious about this.

On the way back from Kamikochi, I stopped by to buy some souvenirs.
There is a large parking lot, and the store is large and has many souvenirs. Apart from the building, I was happy to be able to purchase wasabi croquettes! I couldn't eat it because I had to wait in line at Kamikochi, so the wasabi flavor was strong and I could still feel the wasabi aftertaste even after I ate it. was delicious!
The toilet seat was warm and the toilet was clean.
Souvenirs can also be purchased using a credit card.

I stopped by for a break on the way from Matsumoto to Gero Onsen.
Yes, we went for a drive. The mountain surface was beautiful, the flowers were blooming, and the scenery was refreshing. It was nice to be refreshed.
There was a souvenir shop and a restaurant, so it was busy, and of course there were restrooms.
I would like to stop by when I pass by again.
