A small group of us visited here for the first time recently. The staff was very nice and helpful. It is a really neat museum, and even has a little gift shop. If you are interested in learning more about the Iditarod, this is a great place to visit!

I had such a great time here. The dogs are wonderful and the people that work her are fantastic. I learned so much about sled dogs with the free video they show in the gift shop. Sled dogs have a natural instinct and desire to run and work. When properly cared for and trained, sled dog teams can lead fulfilling lives. Responsible mushers prioritize the well-being of their dogs, ensuring they receive proper care, nutrition, and rest. When treated ethically, sled dog activities align with their natural instincts and I could certainly tell these dogs were happy and loved to run! I love that after I left here I knew so much about sled dogs. I highly recommend going here if you’re in the area. The sled ride was $10 and it was just a short loop (about 2 minutes) but I was so worth it!

It was just great, the dogs are very loving the mushers friendly and competent the ride could have been longer but I was amazed at how fast they are and how much weight they can pull. I could also see that the dogs 🐕 don't run with any kind of compulsion or strictness, but that they like to do it for their human, if one of the dogs seemed tired or exhausted, he was immediately taken to his place to rest. I loved it and would love to do it again.

Small museum with memorabilia about the race, 33 minute movie about why the dogs like to run, gift shop, and the opportunity for $10 to ride in a cart pulled by dogs that have been in the race. What's not to enjoy?! Thanks Riley and best wishes on your next race! Visited Sept 13, 2023.

This was very interesting. It was raining when we were there so we only stayed inside. The film was about the dogs and very enlightening. The winners portraits line the walls and the history of the race is explained . Its free. You should go.
DUANE HELLE — Google review
Great little history museum of the Iditarod. It is only one room, but there is a lot of info packed into the space. There is also an informative movie called "Why They Run" that explains the dog point of view in regards to the whole sled dog thing.
Peter Copley — Google review
We were able to pet the puppies and some of the adult dogs. The owners were very informative and friendly, there was a dog powered cart to give rides ($10) and plenty of opportunities for photos. There is also an indoor museum which is free to the public. Great fun for the kids and the adults too.
Mary B — Google review
Very cool small museum that's free to visit and has a nice gift shop. Learn all about the Iditarod Don't sledding race. And you can take a short dog sled ride for $10 each.
Bret Ostendorf — Google review
The museum was small and not really worth the trip except that they had the dogsled rides. It was the perfect length for small kids who mostly wanted to meet the puppies. They really enjoyed the ride too! We watched the movie in the museum and I found it interesting as an adult but the kids got really bored about half way through. I had to work to keep them engaged. Overall everyone was kind and considerate.

What a wonderful place, So much information about past races and the people plus their amazing dog's. Make sure you take the dog sled ride, it's so much funnnnn.
D. Francis — Google review
Easy to get to. Friendly staff. Clean bathrooms. $10 for a short but fun sled pull. Dogs got so excited! You can pet one of the frisky puppies. Gift shop has good selection, and lots of historic info inside museum.
Douglas Sinclaire — Google review
Very interesting film about the dogs and period really enjoyed my visit there.
Comment if you're up this way it's I must see
Patricia00 Pero — Google review
Inside the building was a large display of memorabilia related to the Iditarod.
The movie that plays on the TV gives some history of the race as well as diving into the dogs themselves and how the race has evolved over time.
Chris — Google review
Great place to stop to see/learn about the Iditarod. Was great to meet Riley (and to have the kids ride behind his dogs for a couple minutes) - having some first-hand knowledge and stories made for a very memorable experience!
Also a nice little gift shop if you're looking for some souvenirs.

The museum here is fairly small but has a lot of info packed into a small space. There was also a movie about why the dogs like to run and pull the sleds.
Thunderbird Falls Trail is a family-friendly, easy hike located near Old Glenn Highway, just 30 minutes away from Anchorage. The trail leads to the 200-foot Thunderbird Falls and offers beautiful views of the surrounding scenery. It's well-maintained and suitable for all skill levels, making it perfect for families with small children. Additionally, visitors can explore the creek trail beyond the waterfall viewpoint for an extended adventure.
Family friendly easy hike with beautiful views. Would suggest taking the creek trail after the waterfall viewpoint.
Niharika C — Google review
It’s a short hike that is not too difficult, making it great for the family. The falls are pretty, but are a bit underwhelming compared to some others in the area. The trail is well maintained and not too far outside Anchorage. Definitely worth the trip if you’re a nature lover or just looking for something to do that doesn’t consume your whole day.

We like hiking this trail. It is an easy short trail. It is beautiful in summer and when frozen in winter.

Independence Mine State Historical Park Visitor Center
Independence Mine State Historical Park Visitor Center is a treasure located near Hatcher Pass. It provides a unique opportunity to explore the historical buildings and structures of a gold-mining camp through its self-guided interpretive tour. The center also includes a gold-mining museum that displays interesting historical artifacts. Visitors can spend hours walking and hiking around the area, capturing beautiful photographic views from up top at the water tunnel.
Some very interesting historical things to see here. Love seeing how things were done in the past. Lots to see and explore here. Great place to bring visitors and kids. Good place for photos.
Skyler Dyer — Google review
Over the summer, June, we piled in the car from downtown and drove up to see the snow. The drive up through Hatchers Pass is very scenic and lovely. Plenty of parking. It gets cold up there so dress for winter or bring a coat.
We did a bit of exploring and learned a lot about the rich history there. Lots of scenic views of Talkeetna Mountains and signage to guide you. It would have been nice if there were designated cleared paths to walk along to get around the area.
Drive carefully on the ride down. The roads are winding and headed downhill it’s easy to lose control of the car.
Nimma Thorne — Google review
We stumbled upon this gem after heading up to Hatcher Pass. We weren't really sure what it was our what we'd be doing, but we paid the $5 admission anyway just to find out. What a good gamble that ended up being.
We spent like 2-3 hours walking/hiking around with the kids and checking out the historical buildings and structures. The kids loved it too!
There are some amazing photographic views from up top at the water tunnel.
Adam Wills — Google review
Great hikes. Depending on your route, it can be challenging but great for experienced hikers. There are several trails to choose. Easier ones for the kiddos. The little mining outpost itself is very cool with lots to see. They are doing restorations to some of the buildings and take serious pride in this area. STAY on trails, the tundra has taken a beating from people with no respect. We were not able to do the full loop, only made it to the the top of the first lake and had wind blowing @ 65+. Made for a great experience. Panning for gold is allowed only with a pan and shovel starting down in Hatcher Pass up to the mining area.
Josh Meadows — Google review
Definitely do the guided tour eith Salmonberry Tours! This is the only way to get you inside several of the buildings, which was super cool! The valley is beautiful and the buildings are very interesting. We recommend they put more story boards up to identify ALL the structures, even those that have fallen down. Likewise along the foot path that goes up around the too of the mill it would have been really nice to have story boards up there to show what it looked like when standing and the workshop buildings along rhe wooden boardwalk accessible area too. They just need to do a better job at the visitor education experience. Overall the site is fabulous and we recommend it!

This is one of our favorite places to visit when we have people and we're trying to show them Anchorage. I was born and raised in Anchorage, but currently live out of the state, and this is the place I come every year to visit when I'm home seeing family. The drive to this site is just absolutely gorgeous, it is breathtaking. Even if there wasn't the visitor center, the drive would be worth bringing someone to. We love the drive, we park and do the hike up to the hidden Lake, then we'll come down and check out the mine and the visitor center. It is great for all ages, it's really cool how history is just kind of frozen and when you learn about the mine and what happened to it. Seriously this is one of our favorite places to take tourists.
Melissa Rappleye — Google review
Cold and raining! Still worth seeing and the drive is beautiful. We have a 21 foot TT and an f150. No trouble getting in and out. There were also bigger rigs up there. The tour at $12 was fine. It gets you into locked portions that are interesting. But, for $5 parking fee you can do a self guided tour that gets most of it.
DUANE HELLE — Google review
We just wandered around without signing up for the tour, and it worked out well for us. It allows you to read up on the history of the site and gives some background on what early gold miners and their families went through. You can walk through most of the building without the tour and explore at your own pace. The tour will give you access to. Few more buildings, as well as an expert guide to answer questions.
Jay Welch — Google review
This place used to be really great. It's now a tourist trap. It's still has that feel of something old and special but lacking in that old authenticity. It's been commercialized but at least it isn't $20 a person. It was a beautiful sunny day which was great. A lot of paved trails and plenty of dirt ones you can get off of. If you go up there your not going to be disappointed at all. Will I go back? Yes
Java Bean — Google review
An absolutely gorgeous drive up and just as splendid of scenery and views once there. Well worth the minimal parking fee.
Snow still present on the trails at the end of June.

I highly recommend stopping here. It may be a drive but it is beautiful on the way there. Keep in mind it is up hill. You pay for parking and optional tour. But they do offer a yearly pass. This place is so peaceful and rich w history. There's plenty of parking and they have bathrooms here. Picnic tables can be found in the lot for food.
Things to mind:
Weather. Water. Your shoes. And bring your bear spray. Yes you tourist. Be safe not sorry. The mountains are their homes. Please be respectful here! There are signs w warnings for a reason.

Super fun day trip from Anchorage. Tried our hands at gold panning and explored the whole area. Cool old mining “town.” Foggy earlier in the day but it cleared out. The drive up is really pretty too.
Noelle McGarvey — Google review
Spectacular clear day to visit. The views were amazing. The self guided tour was worth taking. We were there about 2 hours. Fun to watch the para-gliding. There was a foot race taking place. Lots of people but not too crowded.
The Eagle River Nature Center is a wonderful place to learn about and enjoy nature. The center has miles of hiking, Nordic skiing and riding trails, as well as a variety of classes and resources to help get kids (and adults!) excited about Alaskan wildlife and environment. The location in the Chugach Mountains is quite scenic, making it an ideal spot for a day out or relaxing weekend getaway.
This was a fun activity for our family. Great hikes and trails for kids to burn energy. The views were awesome. Can’t wait to bring other visitors here and share this cool place.
Skyler Dyer — Google review
Had a great visit in March. People working there were SO friendly and helpful. This is a gorgeous place for an easy hike. We did the 3 mile Albert Loop trail in hiking boots and was very well maintained in winter. But the shorter hike is also fabulous with boardwalks over the water. Saw a large beaver dam. Views are outstanding
Chaz William — Google review
Beautiful location for hiking, wildlife viewing and education. There are several trail options, from a 0.75 mile nature loop, up to several miles around the park site, all of which provide scenery and wildlife. A couple of the longer trails were closed due to increased bear activity when we recently stopped, but even the short loop had recently featured a moose sighting. For our stop, some birds and migrating salmon were the extent of the wildlife present. The boardwalks over the creek and marsh provide beautiful spots to take in the majestic mountains, and the woods are scenic no matter the season.
Eric Allan — Google review
Beautiful views and easy to walk trails! We did part of the Rodak Trail and call of Albert Loop. Great for a family with young children. Can't wait to go check out Dew Hill trail!
Amber Moll — Google review
My local park. I live a mile from the Eagle River Nature Center. It’s a great place to reconnect with nature. Bears in the summer, moose in the winter. After the first mile, the crowds and kids drop away and it’s really pleasant.
UPDATE: things have changed and I didn’t renew my membership because they are very unwelcoming to dogs and started charging for free events like the solstice walk. I still love these woods but the management has decided to focus on children who destroy the peace and quiet and litter the trails with trash and dirty nappies. Its a real shame 🥲
Angela Birt — Google review
I have only visited this park in the winter, but it was beautiful. The hike was not hard at all even in the snow, but it would be difficult for someone with an injury, with small children, etc. There are several lookout points and bridges along the way which make for nice viewing. We took the Albert loop which is about 3ish miles, but there are other shorter and longer options. You do have to pay for parking, which is $5, but there is a kiosk where you can pay with a credit card.
Ellyn Davis — Google review
*Really* great nature center! Well-maintained trails, beautifully diverse and pristine landscape, and really nice yurts peppered throughout. Highly recommend!
Amber Schlater — Google review
Beautiful in the summer and fall for walks and hikes!
Those looking for a nice place to cross country ski look elsewhere! The trail isn't really groomed like advertised as it's more a single multiuse trail that's compacted into ice and uneven. If going to the yurts in the winter beware the wood provided was wet cottonwood. We had to refuel the stove every 2 hours, even with it on low, and the next day ran into a couple that left in the night since they couldn't get warm in their yurt.
C Fletcher — Google review
I LOVED the many displays and touchable info. They were very specific to the park nature. Reading them before hiking helped make the hike better. A pleasant surprise was finish our hike just time for a wild food presentation. Thanjs!!!
Joseph Barnett — Google review
Enjoyed the short nature trails and magnificent scenery at this nature center. We visited in early June on a pretty Sunday evening. Trails were very easy to negotiate- not muddy. Didn’t see any significant wildlife but did see a brown bear and her young one along the road less than a mile or so when leaving the area.
Mark Evans — Google review
Incredible views and a pristine environment. This place is like straight out of a NatGeo nature documentary.
We went on a Sunday so the visitor center was closed but the nature area and hikes are still open to the visitors.
You can drive up to the visitor center, hike here and continue down towards Chugach State Park.
These areas are remote and frequented by bears 🐻 and mooses 🫎 so be careful and vigilant while on the trails.
Falak — Google review
Hiked the dew lake loop trail and it was gorgeous if a little cold. Dressed properly it was no issue. The one moose we came across barely deigned to notice us. Though a firearm is never a bad thing to bring along...
Brandon “Ak lumberjack” — Google review
Beautiful!!! We walked the Rodak Nature Trail…stunning views; easy walk…be prepared for mosquitoes!
Shelly Durkee — Google review
This place is beautiful. It's an easy small trail hike around that is family friendly. I do say that lightly as there are bears and other wild life around so do be prepared for any unannounced visitors. But other than that it's a really scenic place perfect to get away and enjoy nature. The trail is free just pay for parking which is 5 dollars for a regular car. Do be sure to being a pen to write on the envelope.
Jaymez Callaway (James2Games) — Google review
Great place to go for a easy hike down into the valley to Eagle River surrounded by the majestic Chugach Mountain range. The Albert Loop is a maintained loop that is an easy to moderate trail hike.
There is a parking fee based upon duration.
AkGrown71 — Google review
We went in early April when it still had snowy weather. Very gorgeous! Most trails were blocked off for construction or something so we took the short trail and just visited this deck. I believe it was the Beaver deck. Not sure, but it was beautiful. Only 5 dollar parking. The parking ticket is usually a momento for us so not a big deal.
The Musk Ox Farm is a non-profit organization that provides educational tours and features musk oxen, along with a unique gift shop. Visitors can enjoy a 45-minute walking tour of the farm, which teaches about these fascinating animals from babies to elders. The knowledgeable guides are available to answer any questions you may have. The gift shop offers apparel and hats made from the inner hair of the ox, as well as other trinkets and books.
Enjoy learning about the Musk Ox today! Our tour guide Jessica was very nice and very eager to share her knowledge with us. Really enjoyed it! Great for the whole family.

Very cool place to visit! The staff were all super friendly and we gained lots of information from our walking tour throughout the farm. All the musk ox were pretty active even though it was a hot summer day.

My husband & little sister visited the Musk Ox Farm Fri 3/15/24. We definitely needed spikes for our boots due to the ice & thanks to other reviewers, I knew we needed them & brought some. There were about 6 others on our tour. The guide walks you around the farm & tells you all about the Musk Ox - It's a very short & simple walk. The guide was also able to answer questions from the group. I don't know that I would recommend this activity for young children but its a fun, educational way to spend an hour or so. At the end, you walk back into the building & there is a small gift shop. I would recommend visiting to learn about these beautiful arctic animals!

Visiting from Florida. Wonderful 45 minute walking tour around the musk ox farm teaches you everything about the musk ox. From babies to elders you will see the different age groups of these mostly docile animals. Nice guides to answer all the questions you may have. Little gift shop area to snag up some apparel or hats made from the inner hair of the ox. Other trinkets books and more. A nice spot to view and experience these majestic creatures. Great for people of all ages! A must see when in Palmer AK!

This was not part of our plan when we went to Alaska and we happened to stumble across it online. It was really well priced and on our way elsewhere, so we went. We had zero regrets. It was really cool to learn about musk oxen (what a misnomer!) and the fall and rise of their population in Alaska. Walking around the farm was lovely, and our guide was knowledgeable and enthusiastic. I would recommend this tour for both adults and kids.
Tara Forbes — Google review
I joined the Guided Tour given by Catharina, she was very polite, answered our questions, and, more than all, gave us explanations about this very especial animal, the musk ox, who survived the ice age and brings nowadays informations not yet all revealed.
They also have some reindeer’s/ caribous and a beautiful and cheap collection to be purchased at their small shop.
A MUST GO !

I visited here Dec 2023 while I was on a work trip to Anchorage. I had a great experience getting to see all the musk ox around the farm. The tour was very informative and Jessica was a great tour guide. The animals are very well cared for and loved. Highly recommended stopping by. Don’t forget good winter shoes and clothing if you are visiting in the colder months!
Jessica Rakich — Google review
Do this before the reindeer farm. Don’t do it after! It’s less hands on and more educational. Also, masks outside… lame. You aren’t even close enough to throw covid on the ox so I don’t get the dire need for the mask. If you’re into extreme social distancing from animals and want to learn 80 ox by name then this tour is for you. The views are beautiful and the ox are cool to see but… just different experience! I’m glad these animals have a wonderful place to stay and don’t have to risk their lives from catching covid from patrons.

The Musk Ox Farm out of Palmer was easy to find. Their new gift shop is very nice and the hosts are very knowledgeable. Prices were very reasonable too. Excellent for all ages and a totally unique experience in a beautiful setting.

I love this ancient animal. Their fiber is most exquisite. The tour guide was very informative and answered all my questions. Can’t wait to crochet with the yarn I bought.

This was fun. The tour was informative and worth the fee. We only waited about 20 minutes for a tour. The gift shop was interesting but very expensive.
Sherri Thomas — Google review
The farm and animals are fun to see…we toured today 8/8/23. Our tour could have been much better with a different guide. Ours seemed uncomfortable and laughed with every word she spoke. It was brutally slow and she repeated stuff because, I guess, she ran out of thing to say. We saw another tour group down a different area and there were many more young Musks down there. So…I recommend because when are you going to see Musk Ox’s.
Colleen DH — Google review
A wonderful experience. I booked for a Sunday evening and was the only one there for that tour. Jessica was very knowledgeable which made the tour much more enjoyable. The Muskox came very close to the fences, they appear to be very well cared for. 10/10 great experience for any age

The online booking was very easy and convenient. Our guide, Abby, had been with the farm for some time, so she was very knowledgeable. She answered all of our questions and told us entertaining stories about many of the oxen. It was interesting and fun (and funny!) to see the unique personalities of each animal. The gift shop has a good selection of merchandise; something for all ages. Overall we had a wonderful experience and I can definitely see us returning again and again. I highly recommend visiting!

We stopped in to check out these animals as a recommendation from a friend. The facility and tour was awesome. Our tour guide was really knowledgeable and it was fun to walk the fence line and see these creatures. They are really magnificent and it’s worth stopping in!

We had Amelia as our guide and she was so kind and understanding when our 2 year old melted down the whole tour. Our 5 year old loved it and was super engaged the whole time. We can’t wait to come and visit again once the weather gets a little warmer and our two year old, a little more tame.

A luxury resort hotel in Anchorage, Alaska, Alyeska features Native influences, natural beauty, and modern touches. It has access to the 60-passenger aerial tram and the spa. The ski area is also very popular with excellent facilities and sensational scenery.
Such a great time skiing here. Didn’t stay at the resort but stayed close by and got lift tickets each day so we made it up to the restaurants on the tram, definitely do that on a clear day we had so much fun. I appreciated the green slopes, they were just the right mix of easy but intimidating. Best skiing I’ve done so far, I hope to be back next year!
Bridget Gaughan — Google review
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO!
Way overpriced!! Not remotely close to a 5 star resort at all!! The location is gorgeous, I hear the spa is fantastic… if you can even get an appointment. The discounts for being an overnight guest aren’t very good, especially considering that non overnight guests get to use the same facilities as guests do.
The lobby is lovely but the rooms are motel 6 quality. Staff isn’t friendly or informative. Zero signage to let you know where things like restaurants, gift stores, parking, or shuttle pickup is located. If you’re handicapped the amount of stairs to get to the pool and other amenities wouldn’t be wheelchair accessible and neither is the pool itself. Parking and hauling your own luggage and ski gear 1/4 of a mile away from the hotel isn’t a great way to start your experience. Valet/ bell hop assistance was non existent.
Go for the day, enjoy the scenery, enjoy the VERY few amenities you can, but stay overnight in Anchorage at a FAR better hotel for WAY less money that has better choices of restaurants and watering holes.
For $500 a night you could have a better hotel, better restaurants and bars, nicer staff, better shopping options and still enjoy the pool, hot tub, spa, gym, arial tram, and skiing at the resort. I’m not terribly surprised, as it’s typical of Canadian owned resorts to be unfriendly and overpriced.

Stayed here for a couple of nights with my daughter. The room was very clean, with a gorgeous view! The beds were great, but I wish I could have cooled the room just a bit. I did, however, very much appreciate the fan provided. Robes in room for pool reservations is a nice touch. Riding the tram to the top was gorgeous and not as scary as I expected. Once at the top, we had a lovely view, but lines were way too long to get a drink or food. We visited the spa for a day, and that was exceptional. The room service was mediocre, ordered spicy chicken but without knowing it was missing all the toppings and tasted like fish, that was a waste. However, Bessy at the front desk made it right and did not make me feel bad for mentioning it. The walk from the resort to the Sitzmark was beautiful and highly recommended if one mile isn't too far for you. Overall, it was a great experience and I will hold these memories for life.

I went here for skiing this past winter, and while I usually only go for a day trip I decided to stay at the resort this time for a week. I must say what a beautiful location and thrill it was to be there. The rooms are definitely not new but worked for me just fine. I recently came back this summer to hike some of the trails near that area for the first time. It's all stunningly beautiful but that parking lot still annoyed me as its badly designed.

Alyeska Resort, is a wonderful place to stay in the summer. I highly recommend the gondola, the views are incredible and at the top, there is great place to have a soda, or drink! If you prefer... you can hike to the top, which I am told is about a two and a half hour climbing trek. Everyone was so nice. I cannot imagine how much fun this ski resort is in the winter!! Great for all ages!!

Great place to stay and scenic location. The drive from Anchorage to the resort is such a pleasant surprise as it is beautiful all around. No northern lights like their website boasts as if the probability is high. Beds are comfortable. Restaurants could use some help though - food is average.

As an AK resident it's still a treat to visit the resort. The staff was extremely kind and accommodating allowing us an early check in/late check out. The beds are comfy and the bathroom/room was extremely clean. The salt water pool is great temp and of they provide plenty of towels and of course comfy robes. We will definitely be back soon!! I do wish they would still offer residential rates for us locals :)

The best pool I've been in. Nice and warm, the salt water is so relaxing. Then to the hot tub for the awesome views of skaters and skiers while soaking in the steamy waters!
The restaurant was very clean and so peaceful for breakfast, sitting there enjoying our coffee and watching the sun come over the mountain. The breakfast was well prepared and we opted for the buffet. We were very happy with the price and quality of the offerings. The resort was warm and welcoming and the staff was so helpful and friendly. Our room was very clean and everything functioned properly. Overall, our stay was very enjoyable and romantic and we would be very happy to return.

The room was nice, service good, however the food for someone who needs gluten-free options SUCKS! To have about 6 items (3 from in room food with a 20% mark up) that I can eat for a high end resort isn't acceptable to me. The salad I ordered with halibut on it was super small my guess maybe 2 at most 3 oz. My son and husband enjoyed the food. The brussle sprout salad was really good. There was no fries or chips and salsa is also disappointing. We did overall enjoy the overall vibe, but didn't like the limited food options.
Food update: this is what I got for my gluten free pizza, it doesn't even have pepperoni on it like the menu says. Hardly any sauce.

We did not stay at the hotel. Day trip to the new Nordic Spa! Absolutely Fabulous! Well layed out and the scenery was great. We had a great time in the hot tubs and saunas. Getting out of the hot water and into the cold water pools was is invigorating! The staff we are friendly and professional. We will definitely be coming back!!

This resort is overpriced for how run-down the rooms are. The wallpaper was peeling from the walls, half the outlets didn't work, and the walls are paper thin. The main parking lot is so small, and the overflow lot is quite the walk to the hotel. The employees are great and friendly. It's convenient if you are spending several days on the mountain, but I will just stay in Anchorage next time.

This is a beautiful lodge in a wonderful location. The rooms are ample, but a bit dated. They are clean and the rooms have tubs/showers. The tram is located at this location. The hotel restaurant very nice but the menu is limited. The bar/grill and snack bar have limited hours. The gift shop is one of the best I've seen. This is a good location for all seasons including winter. The rooms include benches with storage for ski boots just outside the room.

Amazing resort. Probably the best place we stayed the entire two weeks traveling around Alaska. I had the best sleep here. Gorgeous property, well maintained trails, perfect rooms, lovely Nordic spa, nice staff. Will definitely come back to spend more time here.

Absolutely disappointed in the quality and presentation of this "resort". The rooms have peeling walls, stained carpets, carpets coming up in places, a horrendous smell to the linens and nicotine stained walls. The television in our room was manufactured in the late 90s and was so grainy you couldn't even watch it. The bathroom walls were beyond disgusting! Every amenity they list was either unavailable or booked solid. We stayed in our room 45 minutes out of a 5 day booked stay! We both decided it was worth the loss to just leave and find something more suited to our stay-cation needs. This is NOT what I would call a "resort". The surrounding beauty of the mountains is amazing but the hotel itself is failing dramatically. I would not stay here again, I would not recommend the "resort" to anyone to be honest. We were so excited to stay there and so disappointed to have to leave within minutes of checking in. Save your money and the disappointment find something better, it's not what you would expect and the images they use to advertise are grossly misleading.

My husband and I flew from Florida to Alaska for this resort for our one year anniversary. Long story short, no employees except Kevin (who was great and talked with us while he brought our luggage up) even cared about telling us about the resort or answering our questions.
The front desk couldn't tell us where to get breakfast or even care to try. We had no idea about anything.
[Cut to] trying to get ski lessons: we walked aimlessly around the mountain and asked about 5 different employees about taking ski lessons (the resort has a school) and again, no one could tell us anything. Was offered a phone number for the mountain manager, Mr Donaldson, left a message, and never heard anything. We had money to spend and it seemed like we couldn't find anyone who wanted our business!
It was so disappointing that we checked out 2 days early and flew back home to Florida.
My husband left his Bose headphones there and I had to make 3 phone calls and speak to the reservation manager before the headphones were "found" by housekeeping and security. I'm not saying anyone was stealing, but I feel like no one tried to find our $300 headphones.
Michael the reservation manager (I think that's his name?) And Kevin at the front deserve shout outs because they truly went above and beyond but seriously STAY AWAY FROM THIS HOTEL AND ITS OLD ROOMS until they can get their staff PROPERLY TRAINED
I waited to post this because I was told I would get a survey from the hotel and I was going to put this info there but I never got it so I thought I'd warn others to be weary of this place...

What a shame. Such a beautiful location and this hotel has seen better days and probably better management. The rooms are outdated as others have pointed out. They don’t have a list of activities on property. You just have to wander around to figure it out. They nickel and dime for everything. $27 a day to valet a car and force people to park in a remote lot and drag luggage uphill through snow and ice? There are no outside food delivery services available so you’re stuck eating their food that is mediocre at best and severely overpriced. $4 for a Pepsi? $8 for a Corona? Disappointing experience. They need to fire their IT people as the Internet was ridiculously slow throughout the property. The staff was frustrated because a simple credit card charge took 2 minutes. The amount of computer keystrokes and processes to perform simple tasks is unbelievable. I feel sorry for the staff because they really try but have inadequate resources to perform their job. This place needs some love.

One of my favorite ski areas in the world. Christmas chute and others are completely unparalleled for x factor accessible right off the top of the lift. It honestly beats Big Sky and Alta in that regard. The downside to this resort is it takes absolutely ages for patrol to open terrain, sometimes never. Other resorts have similar avalanche hazard and open terrain far sooner after a storm. Is it just a lack of patrol? No clue.

I was raised in Alaska and have experienced staying at Alyeska resort plenty of times since childhood. This weekend was my first time (as an adult) paying to stay at the resort I was disappointed at the state of the room. Furniture and interior have been the same since the 90s or even later. The desk chair in our room had so many stains and the sitting chair felt dirty (like it needed to be steam cleaned or thrown away really) The other furniture had so many scratches. The phone looked like it hadn’t been dusted in a while. The wallpaper and lamps are a very unfortunate cream color that has probably been there since the beginning of time. If they allowed smoking in these rooms I’m sure it would look and smell like it was straight from the 70s. The bathroom was clean at least. Staff was nice and for the most part accommodating. Pool was clean and relaxing. I didn’t get much sleep though because I wasn’t able to change the temperature in the room so I was hot and extremely uncomfortable the whole night. It needs some TLC for sure especially for the price you’re paying.

Didn't stay here, just drove up from Palmer to visit. Very pretty area and gorgeous place. Very quiet. I can only imagine what it looks like during the ski season. One reason we came here was for the bakery near by, but it was closed 😢 heard great things about it. Maybe next time.

I have stayed at Alyeska a few times now. Always for special occasions.
The rooms are clean and comfortable, but don't stand out much from your standard hotel space. The main "selling point" being the location, and your room might have a good view out the window.
The staff and service is always top notch.
Good opportunity for skiing/snowboarding, local hiking trails, and the Nordic Spa with Hydrotherapy. Food is great, but can be a bit limited depending on your schedule.

Good infrastructure. Great spaces. But this cannot be considered a luxury property. Beat up paint. Waves in the carpet. Lights not working. Mismatched furniture. Just needs a lot of cosmetic work to justify the price. The spa is much newer and nice.

Stunning resort set in beautiful surroundings.
Room was modern, I assume renovated fairly recently. Usual fixtures (coffee machine, fridge, tv, bathrobes etc...)
Hotel had lots of common areas that I imagine during high season can be busy but during our stay (Early Sept) we felt like we had the place to ourselves. There are a range of food options for all budgets, and a couple of shops.
Area is great for leisurely walks, or up the mountain which I didn't dare but saw lots brave it.
We didn't visit the spa, or the pool so cannot speak to those.

This is a truly beautiful place.
Everyone who we encountered that worked here was the absolute sweetest, and we had the best time riding the gondola to the top and doing a hike around the mountain. Really wish we could have done the new sky bridges!
Really hope I get to go back someday! Best spa I have ever been to!

I recently visited the hydrotherapy at the spa. It was a beautiful winter escape with the snow-capped trees and saunas. The lockers contain a robe, slippers, and towel with exfoliating scrub. The staff is very professional and was helpful with instructions upon arrival and recommendations for making the most of the day. The locker rooms were clean and well equipped with showers, toilets, a vanity area with provided hair dryers, curling, flat irons, and make remover with cotton pads. There are water bottle filling stations conveniently located throughout, and you should definitely plan to tote one around. Additionally, there is a warm tea and fruit infused cold water station at the entrance to pools. The showers did get a little dirty towards the end of the day, but the provided slippers gave peace of mind. The cafe was perfectly situated for a mid day break and snack to rehydrate and refuel. A good variety of fresh, delicious food and mocktails and cocktails or warm beverages. I would highly recommend the full day package to fully experience the hydrotherapy and have time to revisit your favorites. The crowding was minimal during the daytime and picked up around dinner time, likely due to the discounted twilight option. I would highly recommend the experience and plan to return.

I was fortunate to stay here Monday to Friday and it was incredible. The rooms were beautiful, service was top notch and plenty of amenities but what put it over the top was all those things in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Surrounded completely by the mountains at the lodge, a quick 10 minute ride up the tram has you towering above them. If this place isn't on your bucket list, add it immediately. I was also lucky enough to preview the Black Diamond Lounge on the 8th floor while I was there and it is amazing. Once it opens, getting people to leave and enjoy the rest of the resort might be impossible.

Wonderful stay at Alyeska resort. This mountain is a little low in elevation and as such, the lower third of the mountain often receives rain and the snow is sometimes heavy. The pool area is great. The outer skiing areas are excellent but unfortunately they are often closed. If you're there for a ski trip, I would recommend looking into a heli day to get to some great snow.
Bryce Byers — Google review
We enjoyed our two nights at the Alyeska. We don’t ski but enjoyed the views and property. Booked in the refurbished section and it was very well done so I highly recommend that based on what others say about non-renovated rooms. As noted by others, the inside is a bit tired and in need of some refurb, but with the amount of ski traffic going in and out it actually seems decent. Restaurants seem to have odd hours so we walked over to the Sitzmark both nights. One major flaw that needs to be fixed - that there is only one place to get coffee in the morning is a travesty for a ski resort. Especially when there are no coffee supplies in the rooms. Honestly a free filter coffee station would be amazing with basic creams and sugars. Those that want special coffees can go to the shop, with hopefully added employees other than the one lady powering through all the orders that included food. The wait for some was over 30 minutes. Overall service was very good. Would definitely stay again.

Goldilocks approved. So much right about this resort. The 8th floor has been redone recently and has a great vibe. Comfy bed, great views. Not too posh and not too rustic. Spa is great- and the spa restaurant might be the best place to dine on the property. Skiing was incredible and this is as ski in and ski out as they come. Nice rental shop, free ski concierge.

Alyeska skiing can be hit or miss. It’s great when it’s blower pow or bluebird skiing with ripping groomers. As a lifelong Alaskan who has moved south, I can say it’s a pretty awesome place when the skiing is perfect and it’s pretty miss when it’s not: as in raining top to bottom and closed upper mountain. The views are a five. The mountain amenities are a four. The food and beverage scene can be better. Price points are pretty high. I haven’t stayed at the hotel in a while but, they can afford to do some updating to the rooms that have been the same since I was 13 years old. The Nordic spa is what is really a game changer for the place. Overall; it is a must see/do when visiting Alaska. The North face is some of the most fun and technical skiing you will do in a resort. The people are just as funky as the Sitzmark. It’s definitely got something for everyone. And if you know you know; See Big Wave Dave for A Fizz- only at the tram house.

I've skied Alyeska for 60 years and I've seen many changes, upgrades, problems, etc,,,
It is an absolutely beautiful area with great views.
Renovations are ongoing right now to rooms and a new restaurant. We lucked out and stayed 3 days in a newly updated room. Very nice although a microwave is needed to reheat resort restaurant food.
My wife and I experienced nothing but excellent, friendly, and energetic service from all staff members every day.
I did sense a sort of disconnect between hotel operation staff members as if they were all not exactly on the same page. Experience tells me there IS a management problem. I trust they'll get it figured out.
It is truly a wonderful place with great potential 👍

Leaving 4 stars because I felt like the rooms themselves and dining options left some to be desired for the price of the stay. The rooms and some parts of the lodge felt quite dated and there is a small cafe but other breakfast options were quite pricey.
That being said, the staff was very friendly and helpful, the ski in ski out experience was top notch, and we loved relaxing in the mountain-view hot tub after riding.
The Alyeska Aerial Tram takes visitors to the top of Mount Alyeska for stunning views of glaciers and peaks. It's a five-minute ride up from the town of Girdwood, located about 30 minutes south of Anchorage. Year-round, the tram is open from 9:00am to 4:00pm.
Fast and reliable access to good variety of on and off piste skiing. I was there on a holiday weekend and did not experience any lines or waiting even with COVID restrictions to 50% capacity. Runs every 10 minutes, under 5 minutes to gain over 2000 vertical feet.

The Alyeska Aerial Tram takes you up a small mountain that has hiking and biking trails in the summer and is otherwise a ski resort in the winter. The tram itself is very nice and the trip both up and down were smooth. Realize that it is fairly tight quarters for about 5-10 minutes. Great views from the tram and OK views at the top during summer. We were up on a fairly cloudy day so couldn't see much for part of our visit. With so many amazing places to visit this was good, but not great.

Near perfect experience. If you never rode a tram. This was quick. Everything was easy, and there was no wait. At the top of the Tramway, there is a small deli and bar with surprisingly decent food. I was told we were going to the restaurant, but I was not open. The weather was not bad at all as we were in the skiing offseason, but its Alaska, it was definitely a little chilly. Can't wait to come back!

Very nice tram. Views were great, not a long wait and pleasant ride up. If you are just visiting, there is a little hike up to a better view point, and they do have a souvenir shop up top.

This was cool to be in snow during the summer with beautiful views! Kids had fun exploring of the mountain and building a snowman. There is a restaurant deli at the top and a little museum. The hotel at the bottom has fine dining to pick from I would just check the hours for the day that you’re coming if you wanted to eat there. Once you get to this area there is a local shuttle that works off tips to drive you anywhere and drop you off and pick you back up around the entire town.
Melanie Ezzell — Google review
Beautiful views from the top of the tram, although you do have to pay to ride on it. At the top, there is a bar to get drinks, a cafe which closes at 4:30, a gift shop, and the Seven Glaciers fine dining restaurant, which you need a reservation for. If you don’t want to take the tram, there is a strenuous yet doable hike to the top.

Totally worth the money! We were here on vacation waiting to get on our cruise. The scenery is incredible. Alaska is definitely one of the most beautiful states I've ever been to. I think we paid 50 or $60 per person to get to the top of the mountain. I would absolutely do it again.

This was surprisingly the best stop we made between Anchorage and Seward, and one of our top 3 things we did in Alaska. By reading the website, I thought it was just a tram ride up and down, instead there was tons to do at the top!
Tickets: Tram rides leave very often, so you'll have no problems getting on one throughout the day. There are plenty of tickets available, so you can buy the day of. Lots of military/veteran, student, and senior discounts available.
Tram: It's standing room only, but not a very long ride. Glass views all around and good for pictures.
Tram Alternative: There is a hike that goes from the base to the top. It's dirt and a lot of switch backs, but excellent exercise! Hikers can take the tram down for free, but ticketed passengers get first dibs.
At the Top: Once you get off the tram at the top, there is a hiking trail that will take you further up the mountain for breathtaking views. Well worth the climb! Even in August there was still some snow up there. There is also a restaurant (pick-up & find a seat no servers) and a bar. You can take your brew outside and enjoy the views while sipping on a cold beer or cocktail. There is also a gift shop.
Great for families, friends, couples or solo! All ability levels as well.

A bit pricey but definitely worth it. Spectacular views and you don't have to climb a mountain for it. I also want to note that all the folks running the tram were very nice and very helpful.

A quick 4.5 minute ride from the bottom to the top - elevation of 2000ft gain. Unfortunately, today mother nature took her toll. The fog rolled in and all we saw was the white background. There are restaurants on top, one is a 4 diamond restaurant with reservations required while the other restaurant is more casual. Would be an amazing place to visit and have a lovely dinner with spectacular views on a clear, sunny day.

This was one of the most amazing things we did on our trip to Alaska. We didn't have a true plan for the first few days in the State, but finding this was a gem for sure. Go to the top with the tram and the views are stunning, having lunch at the top was a real treat. Seeing glaciers up close was breathtaking.

At first I thought it was a bit expensive, but it’s worth every penny. Clean, safe ride with friendly staff. The mountain top was very cool with wildlife (saw a bear on the way up), wildflowers, and great views. The bathrooms were clean and the beer hit the spot. 20% discount if you are staying at the resort. Pictures taken August 14, 2023.

Amazing views but Expensive ($48pp) ! There are seven glacier views on top which is definitely amazing and a short hike to go to higher elevation to view glaciers but I don’t recommend going all the way to the top. Me & my husband felt there is not much difference in the views even after the hike which is steep & slippery (wear hiking shoes). Alaska has many glaciers, so you can see them even while driving or stopping at overlooks. So take this tram only if you really want to go. Otherwise you can skip it. Same seven glaciers can be seen from the road while driving toward Seward from Girdwood.

I have gone multiple times! In summer and winter for snowboarding! Always a fun ride and breathtaking views. If you have never taken a ride it is worth the trip at least once! Price seems steep but it is Alaska! Alyeska resort! I have not had any of the food or extra stuff. You should just save your money on that part but that is my opinion.

A gorgeous view even on a cloudy day. A two mile hike up to the lookout from the roundhouse and restaurant and a tram ride down. Unless you really feel energetic and want to hike the two mile hike back down. It is a do-able steep. I don't recommend it to someone that's really out of shape. The ride down is free. If you choose to ride the tram up it cost $90. for my wife and I both unless you order the meal vouchers which I did so I paid $120.00 for the both of us to be used at the restaurant up on top. If you want to eat at the fine dining restaurant I recommend getting online and ordering in advance. The closest day available was two days out. Prices were a little spendy as you might imagine. I thought it was worth it.

A 4-5 minutes lift ride up the mountains. The height of the mountains is at 2000 ft and tram is every 15 minutes up.
Cost- it's $48 per adult and $60 / adult which includes food at the restaurant in the top.
Personally I feel it's very expensive just to go on the top..but views are definitely amazing. It completely depend on the weather if it's cloudy or sunny to see the views. You can also hike the top which is steep hike and coming down is free!!!
Deli- we got the $25 coupon for food and had a black bean burger with cocktail on the top.
The Crow Creek Gold Mine is a historic gold-mining camp located in Southcentral Alaska. The site features recreational panning and a summer concert series. Visitors can learn about the area's gold rush history at the mine, and take advantage of the opportunity to find some golden nuggets.
We went to visit Crow Creek Mine and the entire experience was absolutely amazing! The staff is super friendly, informative, and helpful, the landscape is breathtaking, and the experience was all around wonderful. Took the kids here to have them learn what panning for gold truly entailed. While we found only specs of gold, it was worth the adventure and gave them a better appreciation of what a hard living gold panning was. No guarentee you will find any gold in the creek.
Friendly dog and cat on premise. Cool little museum town to explore, lots of hiking, camping space (no hook-ups). The drive to/from the mine is interesting. The views are great also.

We came here for the kids to pan for gold. The pay dirt had flakes of gold in it do they all got to experience finding gold in their pans.
There are beautiful old mining buildings with plenty of history.
The kids only found one other flake in the river in an hour, but they still had fun.
The gardens are beautiful.
There are campgrounds for small RVs for nightly use without hookup if you would like to stay away from the busy campgrounds.

We booked a night of camping here so that we would be closer to Anchorage to return our RV the following morning. This is a beautiful little place located less than an hour from the city. Exploring the historic buildings and panning for gold were both fun, but probably only occupied us for an hour or two. The campsite we stayed in was generously sized and located right next to a babbling stream. There are no hookups of any kind, but the environment is so much more quiet and relaxing than the large RV parks.
The Reindeer Farm in Alaska is a working farm that offers unique experiences such as reindeer petting and feeding, horseback riding, and winter sled rides. The farm is reasonably priced and provides opportunities for visitors to interact with various animals, including moose and ponies. Despite the windy weather conditions during one visitor's trip, they still had a great time. In addition to friendly staff who assist in showing visitors around the farm, there are also pony rides available for young children.
My husband and I were visiting Alaska from New Hampshire and I came across this farm while looking for things to do in the area. I'm so glad I did. We had an amazing time. Very reasonably priced. It was quite the experience being able to kiss a moose. We enjoyed feeding all the animals......especially the moose and the reindeer. It was very windy the day we went, but we still had a great time. I wish it was closer to home. My nieces would absolutely love it. They offer pony rides for those who have young kids. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful in showing us around. Thank you for a great time.

This farm is absolutely incredible. The staff and owners are SO kind and friendly. There is so much to do and the animals are well loved. I highly recommend doing the VIP tour as you will get to go in with the animals and feed more of them than if you do the self guided tour. Where else can you feed a reindeer with the mountains in the background? I love that this is a family run local business. The entire team clearly takes pride in what they do and love their animals dearly!

I went here in the middle of Dec 2023 and had an awesome experience. I was in Anchorage for work and found this place to explore in my down time. The staff was unbelievably nice and all the animals are very well taken care of and loved. I definitely recommend some good winter shoes while you’re there otherwise your feet might freeze like mine did. The hot cocoa break was a nice added touch in the middle of the tour. I loved being able to feed all the babies and get pictures even though I was traveling solo.

We had a great tour of the Reindeer Farm in Palmer (February 2024). The Highland cows were a highlight with the kids, and our picture at the end of the tour with April the reindeer. It was a great guided experience with a friendly and knowledgeable guide. Kids loved it and so did the adults!

We decided to go to the Reindeer Farm last minute and booked a 2:30 reservation. The drive out there is so beautiful. We got there about 15 minutes early and got to wait in the gift shop. It was cold out, so dress warm. Our guide was Eric, the son in law of the owner. We got accompanied by Cody, the farm dog. We got to feed, pet, take pictures with these beautiful animals. I was stoked that I got to see my first moose. They were still babies, about 6mons old. Eric gave us a lot of info on each animal. We ended getting to take a picture with April, their rescued reindeer. I would recommend going here in the winter. It's just so beautiful with the snow. You do get to warm up and drink hot chocolate half way thru.

Jodi (not sure of correct spelling) was a great guide! The love she had for each animal especially the bison was awesome. She was very informative of each animal. The animals are well cared for which is obvious when visiting.

Fun place for kids and adults alike. Got to pet and see a bunch of native Alaskan animals! Guide was super funny and knowledgeable. It can get pretty cold so make sure to dress warm.

We had so much fun here! The staff are amazingly friendly. The kids were able to touch and feed all of the animals. They had the best time and we will definitely be back.
The Wildlife Refuge Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center offers visitors a chance to see wildlife up close. The center is located close to Anchorage and is known for its encounters with native animals that have been rescued. The refuge also has a zoo, where visitors can see animals from all over the world.
Wasn’t in the plan but stopped in anyway. Was very cool experience. Unlike zoos, you can tell the animals are happy. Very active. You can drive or walk the property. We walked and enjoyed it. Be sure to stop to see the brown bears a few times, they were playful and very active, doing something different each time we went.

Such a great place I went on a van tour. You can drive yourself and even walk through. If you drive through there are plenty of turnouts to pull over into and park so you can walk around to see the animals in that area. The animals look well cared for in the sanctuary. I saw so many beautiful animals it was lightly raining and was in the afternoon so some animals were under the cover of the open sheds. But just to see them at all is so wonderful. The restrooms were clean, the gift shop staff was super helpful. They had food options outside. I wish I had a little longer to look around but being on a tour you have only so long to look around. I will definitely go back on my next trip to Anchorage.

We enjoyed our visit to the farm. You can walk around if you have the time and the weather is nice (probably my preference), but you can drive around to the different pens to view the animals. It was great to see some animals you may not get the chance to see in the wild. The porcupine was super cute. They have a gift store and you can buy coffee and hot chocolates and small food items. It was a lot of fun and great for kids. Highly recommend.

My husband and I visited the conservatory as part of a tour during a visit to Alaska for our honeymoon, and I wish we had more time to spend there. It is such a lovely place. The animals have plenty of room to roam and seem content. We saw a bear trudge over to the pond and lay back, paws in the air, just chillin in the water. Besides the animals, this is a great place to take some landscape photos. It is surrounded by mountains. There are musk ox, bison, wolves, caribou, deer, eagles, bear, and moose. They also have a really nice gift shop. I didn't buy anything, but I wanted to!

We had the opportunity to visit the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center during our trip to Alaska, and it was truly a remarkable experience.
We have always loved observing wildlife animals as it allows us to witness the beauty of nature firsthand, seeing these living creatures in their natural habitat. Each species possesses its own unique charm and beauty.
When we encounter animals, it made us wonder how nature has crafted such magnificent creatures. At the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, we had the chance to see a diverse range of animals that are native to the state of Alaska. The center conducts research and employs sustainable practices to care for these animals, while also providing an opportunity for visitors to appreciate their beauty and learn about coexisting with them, thus aiding in their conservation efforts to prevent extinction.
If you find yourself in Alaska, we highly recommend visiting this place. You'll undoubtedly develop a deep affection for these animals, just as we did.

Can't say enough great things about this place except for WOW. Set amongst the beautiful mountains and valleys, this is a must do experience if you're looking to see wildlife near Anchorage. I took a tour from Anchorage and was amazed from the minute we got here. Seeing these animals enjoy themselves in their natural habitat was so memorable and enjoyable.
If you're interested in going, I do recommend going with a tour group, or making sure that you download maps to be viewed offline as there's little GPS in the area. Personally, I enjoyed not having cellular service during my time here but just a tip to others considering coming here.
Definitely allocate enough time here, while our tour drove through, I would recommend walking to each and spending more time enjoying the beautiful outdoors and beautiful wildlife.

A very good place to watch Alaska wildlife in case you are in hurry or have missed it in the wild. The center is spread out and huge with local Alaksan wildlife kept in big lots. The animals ans birds are looked after really well and and the habitat is done in a way to reflect the wild. Highly recommended.
There are educational centers and a gift shop

The open atmosphere provides a pleasant walk amongst the fenced animals. You can also remain in your car and drive around if you desire. You are able to get very close when the animals allow it. The large animals appear to have large spaces to graze.

A great place to see the wildlife up close. It's very peaceful to watch the bears playing and there was a lot of space to enjoy viewing the animals. You can drive around the loop and get out here and there is walk the entire loop. We opted for walking because the potholes were pretty bad and we preferred to get out and enjoy the sunshine!
The gift shop was nice and had a good assortment of Arts and crafts, jewelry, etc...

This place was so cool!! You can drive around to each animals area/natural habitat. There's fences to protect the animals from people, but you can see straight through. It was amazing, their sense of humor is great, as noted by the social distancing signs. The facilities were clean and all animals looked super healthy! Gift shop was unique and featured local artists.

Absolutely an amazing spot to see a lot of Alaskan species. Wood Bison, Moose, Elk, Caribou, Lynx, Porcupine, Grizzly Beat, Wolves, and Black Bears are all here and are treated well. We went here on a tour and loved it so much that we went back after a few days to make some donations and to see some more of the animals. They have a very nice gift shop as well. Some of the handcrafted knives were incredible!

Absolutely a must! I have been waiting since I moved here to check this place out! All the animals were out. Even the highly anticipated brown bear! The most breath taking views. Very nice that there is a drive option but it’s not too big to walk even with 5 kids! Weren’t bored for a single second! Definitely come!

Must stop for animal lovers! Beautiful drive here from Anchorage, great and helpful staff, cute gift shop, and beautiful scenery while seeing some amazing animals. They're so close to you, it's incredible to see. There's not a ton of different animals like a zoo, but if you love animals, respect nature, and appreciate all of the work that goes into caring for animals like these then you'll love this place! My friend and I went around twice, you can drive or walk, we drove because it was very cold. So glad we went around twice because then we got to see the bears being fed!

Obsessed with this place! One of my favorite experiences on my winter trip to Alaska. There were a handful of animals we didn't see, but it was absolutely still worth it. Make sure you visit the porcupines at the end of the loop! They're the cutest!!!

Very nice conservation center with spacious enclosures for the animals. We truly enjoyed our time there. You have the opportunity to ride or drive to see the animals. We drove through first and then walked. Spent over 3 hours here and could have stayed longer but had to start our drive to Homer. We were there at the right time to hear a concert of howling by the wolves. We loved seeing that all the animals were well cared for. Staff were helpful and informative.

Super cool experience, you have the option to either drive or walk. The moose exhibit was one of my favorites because they love attention and people so they usually come to say hi.
I really expected more from the fox, wolves and bear exhibit however was not able to see them as they were sleeping.
Maybe better to go during summer time so the animals are not hiding trying to stay warm? Not sure.
Very muddy and gross to walk, lots of puddles, we ended up driving.

I recently visited the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, and it was an absolutely breathtaking experience! From the majestic moose to the captivating wolves and awe-inspiring bears, every moment felt like a journey into the heart of Alaska's wilderness. The highlight was definitely spotting a bald eagle resting on a tree above the wolves. The center's dedication to wildlife preservation is commendable, and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking a truly immersive encounter with Alaska's natural wonders. Five stars without a doubt! (Only slight sadness for the moose in the small fenced-in area)

There is a good variety of local wildlife represented. You can walk or drive the trail around the area. The summer tourist season will be busier. There is a playground area behind the gift shop. And there are benches and tables at the bear boardwalk. One thing you want to be aware of is the roads will test your vehicle's shocks.
Portage Glacier is a popular tourist destination in Alaska, accessible by boat tours from a visitor center across the lake. The glacier stands tall at 10 stories and can be easily accessed. Additionally, visitors can also visit the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center to witness several species of native Alaskan animals in their natural environments.

If you are staying in Anchorage and you have half a day available But you want visit a good place and enjoy a boat ride and see Glacier?
You can accomplish all of that at Portage Glacier.
Nice peacefull sail. Just sit back and enjoy.
Even in July you will need some heavy clothing.
Nice place to visit and beauty all around the highway as well.
If you are lucky (like we were), you may see black bear along with the glacier.
Good luck!!

We were lucky enough to visit it on a cloudy day. I think that was the best condition to capture the glacier's bluish color. We booked this tour in Anchorage and it included the Alaska wildlife conservation center and Alyeska resort. Both places are worth it, but the glacier is the gem. The whole day's experience was unforgettable. When the boat was not far from the glacier the huge chunk of ice calved into the water with a loud splash. That was a sad reminder of the glacier's progressing recession.

This was a moderately difficult hike- The first part having a steep incline. The trail takes you to a black sand beach with gorgeous views of the glacier and surrounding mountains. We are in our early 30s and are fit. I would advise caution for the elder.

Came here with some friends on June 7th. Overall it's a BEAUTIFUL hike, with a lot of variety. Probably my favorite hike I trekked in Alaska.
I actually hiked this TWICE in one day cuz I left my wallet (long story) near the glacier the first time and had to go back to find it.
The hike starts kind of steep with a rocky bit, but takes you to the first mini summit which looks back over the parking lot/lake area. That itself is a super cool view (which we experienced coming back) but going up there was a crazy thick fog which gave everything a Lord of the Rings Shire/Hobbit feel. Super cool.
The weather changed a bunch over the course of the day, a lot of the high bits being covered in clouds.... Despite that, and the light rain we got, there were still good views of the lake and glacier as we came in (both higher, overlooking the main lake, and at the lakes edge). The clouds cleared as the day went on, but rolled back again quick, so just keep the weather volitility in mind as that plays a factor in how enjoyable the views might be.
Maybe 15% of the overall trail was snowy bits. As some others said here, bring some gold water proof hiking boots and an extra pair of socks for when you get back as your boots will see a lot of moisture. The snow was not very difficult to traverse (a few uphill moments in the snow made it more strenuous, but it was still upper moderate difficulty).
There is a smaller mini lake half way thru the path (some waterfalls in the distant feeds the river run offs, which is really beautiful!), and 2 large geese/swan birds were floating elegantly there. Pretty much the most prime real estate a bird could ever get. :p Just a gorgeous place....
Once you get to the bottom, you have a nice view of Portage Glacier, but there is still a lake separating you from it. Most people spend time on the beach there then return.
I wanted to touch the glacier, which required another 45 minute hike around the edge of the lake, including wading a rather large river feeding the lake (the water went up to my waste! - and I'm 6'2") and crossing a few other smaller feeding creeks. - the first time I went I just crossed wearing jeans and my boots, which got soaked, and it was freezing! (yeah... Duh. I know. :p) The current was preeety strong too and the friend I waded across with lost his balance coming back and went all in right at the end. - the 2nd time back I wore some waders and crossing was much easier & drier. (still took a bit of patience as the river is strong and wide where I crossed). BIGGEST CONCERN FOR FUTURE HIKERS: as snow melts more, sometimes your foot can break thru some of the snow, especially near the melted edges thst tend to melt in a hollowed out form... We had a few mini break throughs that went ankle deep and got our boots wet a little. Nothing major, but something to be aware about.
As the weather cleared, new incredible views of the surrounding mountains & waterfalls appeared, making this a top notch, diverse hike. :)
Be careful of deveating off the trail.... We "explored" a few tangent trails, which were fun, but got confused a little at one point trying to get back to the main trail. Pretty much, be careful to stick to the main trail, and you shouldn't have a problem.

Beautiful place to go. My family comes here to hike often. We have gotten to see broken off pieces of the glacier in the lake but can't wait to come back during summer to see the glacier by tour. Very convenient to have campgrounds ands so many trails in the area and some great fishing spots all close.

One of the best places in Chugach Mountain area to explore. It’s not that far from anchorage, about an hour drive to the cruise site.
There are several options for cruise but We took the one hour cruise tour and it was worth the price.
The lake is frozen during winter and even in summer time it’s cold! Beware of frostbite and take precautions with all the necessary stuff like gloves, beanie and a good jacket and boots.
Also make sure to carry item like a raincoat or umbrella cause it literally rains most of the time.

We had an amazing experience going out to the Matanuska glacier. We did the 6 mile adventure trek with our guide - Drew, he was the best for this job. He answered all our questions, and ensured that we were comfortable and safe. Would highly recommend this tour and will visit here again for the rafting trip.

We had a fabulous time doing the glacier trek on the Matanuska Glacier with our guides, Mitch and Drew. They taught us so much about the glacier. They were very engaging, making the trek super fun while keeping us all safe. They paid careful attention and encouraged our kids at just the right times. They have all the gear you need. You don't even need to worry about having the right boots. Since we were in a rental RV, we even got to camp by the river in their "parking lot" for free. Amazing!

Went on the Matanuska Glacier trek and had a wonderful time. The glacier was beautiful and I got to learn a ton about it. As long as you listen to your guide, it's a pretty easy and safe hike. Glacier View is a beautiful area in general, and I highly recommend doing the hike on the glacier! They provide waterproof boots/helmet/spikes, so just having long pants, a windbreaker, and a layer underneath was perfect for us.

I don’t even know where to start with NOVA. I have interacted with many guides and have nothing but good things to say about all of them.
1. Ice climbing - phenomenal, so much fun, such a cool challenge
2. White water rafting - a great adventure for the adrenaline junkie
3. Private glacier tour - Maya was our guide and made our trip spectacular
4. Glacier hike - slightly more expensive than Matanuska glacier guides, but worth the cost because Nova actually keeps track of your reservation and has smaller groups.
5. River float - we sent my mom on this trip while we were white water rafting and she had a good time!
I love that they have so many activities happening at the same time so you can bring the whole family and there’s adventure at everyone’s comfort level. It’s also great that all the trips are half day so you can double up and do 2 epic activities in one day!! The base camp has picnic tables that able to be used. Bathroom is a pit toilet, but very well maintained and lots of hand sanitizer.

I cannot begin to express my incredible experience with NOVA Alaska Guides. Every step of the way and beyond was incredible. Not only was I blown away by a once in a lifetime experience just by the views in awe 4,000 miles away from my home- but our tour guide, Thomas, was astounding! He was thorough, educational, funny, kind, and answered all questions with grace, even the oddly specific ones I threw at him not expecting him to know. There were many people crowded at the glacier when we got there and he wanted our group to be more alone on the glacier, and the way he stalled to kill a little time on the fly kept us interested and entertained. He truly went above and beyond and it is clear he loves his work. It seems like it can’t get any better, but it does- I lost my sunglasses someplace in the mix and NOVA actually mailed them back to me, to New York! Every single person I interacted with from start to finish was an absolute angel. I feel blessed to have even seen the glacier, but NOVA took the experience to the next level.

Glacier hiking and ice climbing was our favorite adventure of the trip to Alaska.
We had a private tour and our guide Ben was absolutely the BEST.
He took us to the ice cave, ice canyon, showed us couple holes in the glacier with waterfalls and we did several ice climbs.
Our safety was his priority. We were ice climbing for the first time and felt very comfortable with Ben.
He spent with us all day guiding us around glacier and we had great time.
We would love to come back and bring friends with us next time!

Me and one of my old college roommates were visiting another old roommate who lives in alaska and he recommended using Nova for their tours. We did the rafting in the morning and the ice climbing later in the afternoon. All the staff were amazing, super nice, helpful, knowledgeable, and just all around great people. For the rafting they provided all the appropriate gear (dry suits with boots, helmets, life jackets). Our tour guide Coffee (like the drink) was amazing, we had no spills along the river and they even had one of their employees take photos of everyone throughout the ride (available for purchase on flash drive for $30). for the ice climbing they also provided all the appropriate gear (boots, crampons, helmets, harnesses & tools). Our first guide Maddie was extremely nice but eventually had to leave after taking us to our climb area where Ben took over. He was extremely cool and even went out of his way to stay a bit late with us to make sure we got our time/money worth even though he had been out on the ice since 8am. He even set up a separate anchor rope so we could dangle and take photos of each other climbing. All around great guide group and would definitely come again if ever in alaska again!

What an experience! We were on the advanced trek with our tour guide Warren. She is amazing and professional, provided us all the gear needed for the trip, and made sure we were safe walking on the glacier the entire time. I would never imagine the trip to be this great, it was over and beyond our expectations. We passed all the other people who only did the regular ice trek and owned the entire park to just few of us. We did a little bit of ice climbing too, which was a little bit harder than I expected, but it was a lot of fun for a first timer. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone!

One of the best experiences ever to walk on a glacier. Our guide Dan was amazing checking on us at every step and shared lot of knowledge on glaciers and especially Matanuska. We did a 4PM tour last week and it was not all crowded felt like only we were on the glacier.
The views are amazing and the glacier water oh my god, its the best tasting water I ever had in all these years of my existence!!!
Carry an empty bottle to take some with you.

Our group of 5 did both the Advanced Trek with Connor and the Ice Climbing with Connor & Samantha. These experiences were the favorite of the trip for my brother in laws birthday adventure. We can’t stop talking about it. The advanced trek gets you deep into the glacier and the ice climbing makes you feel so powerful and strong. Connor was so knowledgeable about the glacier. He was professional & super fun to hang out with for our two days exploring the glacier. Samantha was amazing helping us feel confident and safe during our climbs. And props to all of the people we encountered from Kyle directing us at the parking, to the people at check-in, and everyone we encountered in between. My wife and I went on a glacier walk with Ryan today. Great fun, interesting facts and a terrific guide. The glaciers are awe inspiring and Ryan was both knowledgeable and enthusiastic. He always ensured that the walk was within the capabilities of all in our group while still allowing some of us to explore within safety confines.
Overall, an excellent guided hike with a great guide company. Well worth doing.

We had a fantastic experience on the advanced glacier trek with guides Tom and Will! They were quite knowledgeable about the glacier, and ensured our safety throughout the trek while setting up ropes for some fun climbing and rappelling. We got to explore so many stellar glacier features... an incredible day that we'll remember for our lifetime, and a great way to wrap up our first visit to Alaska!

We did the ice fall trek with Quinn as our guide. This experience was better than we could've ever imagined. I learned so much about glaciers and had a blast. Quinn was very knowledgeable, funny, and accommodating. Without a doubt one of the most memorable things we have done in Alaska. Mica guides is definitely the company you want to book with. Hope to see you next year, Quinn!

This glacier walk tour is incredible! The views, the knowledge sharing, the experience worth every penny and would be the most unforgettable memories you would have in life. We had a wonderful day with Dillon, he’s the most professional, friendly, and humorous guide we’ve ever met. We learned a lot about glacier, history and geography :D! 100% recommended!

MICA Guides, and specifically Kelsey (K2) was absolutely amazing! I was in a small group but we all had past experience hiking and wanted to be pushed so she took that into account and went above and beyond so we could see/do as much as time allowed. She was very informative about the glacier but also really down to earth and fun to be around. I was in Alaska for 8 days and did a lot of other activities but this by far was the most enjoyable. I highly recommend MICA guides but also highly recommend Kelsey (K2) as your guide.

Our Ice Fall Trek with Mica guides was great! Going with Mica was a suggestion from a friend who trekked the glacier twice with different tour companies. We had such an experience & our guides Tyler & Samantha made sure that our trip was as safe & enjoyable as it could be. We passed by another tour company that had probably 20 people with young children & were really glad that we didn't choose that tour! For our safety, we weren't allowed to take photos or videos as we were moving but there were plenty of opportunities for photos when we stopped so the photo package that was offered could use some more value. Otherwise, the tour was amazing!

MICA Guides are awesome! We just had one of the most epic adventures. Bret took us out to the glacier for the Ultimate Adventure, and they delivered! It started off with several lessons and then bumped up a notch to some climbing and repelling. The cherry on top was Angel’s Landing, an endless hole that we got do to! This is a must do adventure! Top notch gear and service!

Connor and Dan were so knowledgeable and made us feel very comfortable ice climbing! The climbs they chose were tailored to the abilities of the group and had 2 ropes set up at a time with different difficulties for each. We got to climb a harder route that was so much fun and so rewarding! Glacier ice is incredible!! They provide all the gear you’ll need including rain pants if necessary. Riding in the burb was an interesting and humbling experience—respect ✊ Thank you for a unique Alaskan adventure, it’s one we’ll never forget! (P.S. bring lots of snacks)
The Columbia Glacier, located in Prince William Sound off the coast of Alaska, has been rapidly retreating since the 1980s. As one of the world's fastest-moving glaciers, it has peeled back an estimated 19 miles and continues to change at a rapid pace. This glacier is known for its impressive size, with a face as high as a football field.
Incredible experience!
The best one in whole my life!!
I visited it on summer ‘19.
Wish one day I’d have chance to visit it one more time 🥲

It was incredible experience!! We booked tickets for one day trip in Summer on August 2020, with Lu-Lu Belle. During The trip we saw whale, seals, sea lions, otters and bald eagles. Boat was very nice and Captain very experienced and shared many interesting strories. Columbia Glacier is MUST see with your own eyes if you visiting Alaska!!!! Pictures doesn’t do it justice.

The Columbia Glacier is one of the most rapidly changing glaciers in Alaska according to the U.S.G.S. Make sure you get your photographs now and then you can compare decades into the future to see how much the glacier has retreated.

An enormous Alaskan glacier that moves quickly but is also rapidly shortening in length
The Columbia Glacier is one of Alaska’s largest glaciers, with an area of about 360 square miles (920 square km) and a length of 25 miles (40 km). It descends from the Chugach Mountains in southern Alaska to Prince William Sound (an inlet of the Gulf of Alaska), where it calves large numbers of icebergs into the sea.
Shrinking record
The Columbia Glacier is one of the fastest moving in North America, but its fast forward movement is offset by extremely rapid calving of icebergs at its terminus, at the rate of some 14 million tons (13 million tonnes) every day. As a result, since the 1960s, the glacier’s terminus has moved backward, and since 2011 it has become detached from some of its largest tributary glaciers. The retreat cannot be attributed solely to global warming, as other nearby glaciers are not shrinking at the same pace. Instead, experts believe it is connected to the shape of the bedrock channel under the glacier.

Valdez Museum is a well-curated exhibit that showcases the cultural and historical significance of the area. The museum displays various art pieces, photographs, and artifacts that reflect Valdez's rich history. It includes an antique fire engine, a saloon bar from 19th century, and the first barrel of oil to flow from Trans-Alaska Pipeline. The exhibit covers important moments such as Exxon oil spill and provides information about Valdez's development in chronological order.
Larger than I expected. Exhibits on various events that occurred in the area including the earthquake and oil spill. Your ticket also gets you access to the annex which is worth going too

Really interesting. You learn that aviation really was the thing that spurned the development. Old timey things abound and there's an area about the Exxon Valdez disaster which was kinda weak. Small venue.

Valdez has a rich history as people carved out trails and built infrastructure into Alaska. This museum does a good job of preserving those details. The 1964 earthquake display is an emotional tribute to that major event that changed Valdez dramatically. I was pleased that my grandkids were able to visit.

Amazing, definitely stop by. We saw a million salmon and sea lions were feasting away. Watch by the shore or you can also do a self-guided tour outside and watch videos and learn about the hatchery. Very cool experience. I came once in the early afternoon and again later at night and the tide changed so much we were able to walk way out in the evening. We were hoping to see a bear, but no such luck this time. :-)

Awesome, free activity to do with the family and very informative. We came on Sept 26 and got to see sea lions, bald eagles, and salmon. We saw bears on the drive out!

Absolutely stunning view. Teeming with wildlife and very informative about how the hatchery works with salmon with a self-guided tour. Lots of seals, sea lions, otters, and occasionally a bear during peak season in July-August. One of the best places to go in Valdez.

This is a short ride north of the town of Valdez , Alaska, and well worth the stop. We saw all kinds of sea lions feasting on the pink salmon. Found out later that this is the largest pink salmon hatchery in North America .Check out my YouTube video about Valdez and you can hear the sea lions growling at each other.

Before reach the hatchery keep an eye open for the BEARS! on the side of the road. Yes! We did and we saw bear. We spent almost an hour just to watch the bear catching and eating some fish. At the hatchery we saw a million salmon fight to reach the top, spawn, and lay their eggs. It was Amazing! How they learn to come back where they were born! August 2020

We arrived after hours, but there is a nice, outdoor visitor display and viewing point. Video screens and info displays show and describe how the process works. You can also see the salmon swim upstream in the ladder steps system to the large vats. We saw tons of fish swimming upstream in the weir. We also got lucky and saw a bear with her 2 cubs on the other side of the bridge catching fish, plus a group of sea lions hanging out in the calm waters nearby. A very nice bonus.

It wasn't open inside but has great self-guided tour explaining everything about the different salmon life cycles. The babies need phytoplankton which climate change is affecting. It is a miracle of nature how sooo m species depend on salmon bringing nutrients from the ocean back to shore!! Lots of animals. The over 250,000,000 salmon attreact fisherman which takes pressure off the more natural streams.

We heard about the fish hatchery when visiting Valdez. So we went there, it was amazing. I've never seen so many fish. We didn't see any bears, but there was lot's of signs warning about them.

Came here early July, and was unfortunately too early for the prime season and it was closed. Did see a few sea lions hanging around, but no salmon. The hatchery has many displays showing the life cycle, eco-system, and harvest process which were quite educational. Beautiful scenery regardless and would certainly recommend if you are visiting Valdez.

Long, accessible glacier in Thompson Pass, viewed from a lookout spot on Richardson Highway.
Views of Worthington Glacier and surrounding Thompson Pass are worth the hike to see them.
Nash Wilson — Google review
A perfect stop on the way from Anchorage to Valdeze. The maintained trail is very short, so if you want a closer glimpse of the glacier, you need to be a bit adventurous and make your way over the rocks and rubble yourself. Make smart choices, and you can get right up to the glacier. The river runs right out of the glacier to the beautiful lake below. It is picturesque whether you hike to the glacier, or enjoy the view from the overlook.
Anne Veldhuisen — Google review
We just went out to Worthington Glacier the second week of September, didn't realize that you can't actually touch the glacier like a lot of reviews had said. Apparently those are not updated. The woman running the show out there, greets you and takes your $5 for parking, and her dog (I think his name was Tucker??) Were super friendly and very helpful with answering any questions about the geography , etc (including that you really haven't been able to touch the glacier in at least 5 years). It's a beautiful drive out through Thompson Pass though so would still recommend as a stop over.

Great visitors center for introduction to the largest National park in the USA. Had excellent displays, theater, clean restrooms, and grounds. 2 different rangers gave talks one about the park overview and mountain peaks and glaciers. The other a talk about the boreal forest and fungi/mushrooms that can be seen there. Nice flat trails for easy walking to see the local plants and trees. Very quiet and beautiful views if you are lucky. We read every display, watched movie and did the trail. Can spend 3 hours there doing all that. Should bring your own food snacks and water. None for purchase. You can refill your water bottles there. Highly recommend.

Excellent visitor center only partially open as of late May. We were able to watch the film of the park in theater and visited an indoor exhibition area but main center was closed. Restroom had plenty of stalls and flush toilets. Be sure to explore trails near park facilities as they are in great condition and not long. We walked the forest trail, the River trail and the original Valdez trail. Rangers were on site.

It's a visitor center... not really much to see or do, but had plenty of information for visiting the largest park in the United States. Small gift shop operated by Alaska Geographic... a bit pricy. Worth visiting if you're going to explore the park.
David DeKorte — Google review
The view of Mt. Drum and the Copper River that is behind the visitor's center is as beautiful of a vista as I have seen in the entire United States.
Brian Johnston — Google review
Like most NP Visitor Centers this one is staffed with friendly, knowledgeable Park Rangers. There's also an exhibit building nearby, and another building shows a 20-minute informative film about the Park. That said, there's not much to this VC. You can see it all in an hour or two. The available hiking trails are short, with severely obstructed views of the Copper River Valley. I understand that there are other entrances to this NP with roads that go much further into the Park and have far better hiking trails. My advice would be to consider those.

Its a national park visitor center in a relatively sparsely populated area in Alaska, but its the gateway to the largest of the national parks. Theres a decent movie to see, a ranger station, and a walking oath that has some fantastic views of the mountains, or on inclement weather days, rain and fog, and a few displays briefly explaining the history of the area. Its a very important place in history, as well as geologically still active. Support it!
Paulness — Google review
We became a bit discouraged with the bumpy dirt road but the views we had were amazing. We couldn't keep our eyes peeled for wildlife because the countless potholes and rocks required both the driver and shotgun-rider to watch carefully .
Due to the smoke from the Canadian wildfires the mountains stayed in a haze. After 20 miles we chose to turnaround as the drive was wearing on our driver. Definitely happy we made it as far as we did.

Great visitor center for a National Park. Nice, new, big restrooms and the visitor center has interesting exhibits. Also a great walking trail just off of the parking lot. A ton of different fungi at the end of August along the trail. Also a display of a fish trapping wheel. Good for a rest stop and to learn about the largest national park in the US NPS. Definitely stop by here if you're going to into Wrangell-St Elias.

Must visit the visitor center if you’re planning to visit the national park at Kennecott which is 3+ hrs drive from here on unpaved road for most of it. Where the actual park is and the root glacier trail starts.
It Is very informative. Check their timings before visiting. Also note that you need to take a shuttle from McCarthy to Kennecott which runs until 7pm I guess.

This is a beautiful park with a nice visitor center and outposts at the access areas. It is a huge park and for most people it is mostly inaccessible. The trails exceed my comfort zone of 5 miles round trip. To get to those you travel on gravel roads up to 60 miles. We found a beautiful spot to boondock at mile 16.5 of the northern entrance.

This is a great place to learn about the natural wonders of southeastern Alaska, and about the historic cultures of the area. The gift shop also had a wide selection. There is a theater that shows a film about the park, and there is also a separate building for restrooms. The Boreal Trail is worth walking, but watch out for the bugs in summer.

They did such a fantastic job bringing the best of Alaska in full view. Loved the animal displays because most you didn't want a close encounter and at the same time would love to see. They shared great information and tips, including what to do on future trips.
The facilities were immaculate, the staff helpful and outgoing. They definitely loved their jobs.
In addition to the animal displays they had great artifacts about the cultures and the state's top sport: dog mushing. You definitely want to stop here and get all the inside info they can provide.

I've visited Kennicott twice and did tours with KWG on both trips. I highly recommend the company and its experiences! I've done packrafting, ice climbing, hiking to the glacier and through ice tunnels, and a backcountry camping trip The VIEWS!! It's beautiful everywhere, but especially on backcountry trips. They bring your food and have the gear to borrow for camping (if needed). If you'd like to stay closer to Kennicott, there is plenty to do. You can tailor your journey based on what is comfortable for you. If you have questions, ask! Everyone I have interacted with has been professional, fun, experienced, and a joy to adventure with. They are knowledgeable and love what they do. The company is well-equipped with top gear and ensures you have what you need for any adventure. Kennicott / McCarthy is quaint and peaceful, with vast views and great spots for food and drinks. I hope to get back there before too long!

This August my husband and I went on a week-long backpacking trip with Austin Donnell, a guide for Kennicott Wilderness Guides. We had an incredible experience and would absolutely recommend Austin and KWG to anyone looking for the uniquely rewarding challenge of exploring the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. Austin was incredibly knowledgable and a great traveling companion. When the weather got tough, we were exceptionally glad to have him there to help us make the right decisions about whether to turn back(we didn't have to) and where we should camp. If you're someone who is looking for a custom backpacking trip or wants to travel with a small group, you should definitely look at KWG.
When we got back into McCarthy, we ran into some trouble with our transportation back to Anchorage (which was not affiliated with KWG in any way). Jared (one of the owners) and Austin went out of their way to help us get it sorted out. Thanks again to KWG for an amazing trip!

Had a fantastic two days with them (Avery was guide) hiking, glacier exploring and ice climbing! I've already recommended them to friends, and will probably do this again next year! The hike was a fly out on a tiny cub plane, and that was part of the fun. The glacier can be hiked onto from Kennicott (a 2-3 mile trail - which is awesome in itself - takes you there). Highly recommended.

I couldn’t be more thankful for the wonderful last minute experience. With weather conditions pretty unstable, we called up the owner at 8.30 PM midweek and requested for a half day glacier hike the next day morning. He was very responsive, connected with the guides and made sure to arrange everything in the next one hour or so. And above all, all of this was done for just the two of us. Katy was our guide and she was friendly and an amazing guide. She made sure that felt comfortable throughout the hike, arranged for a rain gear and took us to the best points on the glacier. If we had the time, we might have made it a full day hike. She talked about the history of the place, mushrooms and weeds around, best things to try out in the town, etc.. The hike was totally worth it. It was perfect and a peaceful hike, just us and the guide. I would go back to this group the next time I’m in McCarthy!

Visiting Kennicott for my 70th birthday was fantastic. Plenty to do and see, the air so pure, the scenery breathtaking. We did the half-day glacier hike, and it turned out to be the most memorable experience of our entire Alaska trip. Betsy was an amazing guide, and since we were the only two hikers in the group, it was more of a private guided hiking experience. The views were unbelievable, and we managed to get some really cool photographs. Walking on the glacier was an out of the world experience. The walk through McCarthy township was also pretty nice, and we got to know a lot of the local history. Betsy also introduced us to a lot of local foliage and we got to see a porcupine. We would totally recommend this experience to anyone visiting the area.

I had an incredible experience with KWG on a 9-hour glacier climbing trip, and it exceeded my expectations. They have better guide-to-client ratio!
Throughout the trip, Joe hasn't only guided us through the glacier climbing experience, but also shared insights into the town's history, the mining industry, and the geographical formation of the land. Exploring features like the Moulin and the regular wall-shaped glacier added excitement to the adventure. Tasting the glacier water was a refreshing highlight, and Joe graciously captured beautiful moments with his camera.

My husband and I vacationed all over Alaska to do a little bit of everything. This was one place we really regretted not scheduling more time for. Our next visit to Alaska will be centered around McCarthy and Kennicott specifically because we loved it so much in the short time we were there. On our glacier hike, we got so much more than we expected! From the moment we got picked up in the van, we were off on an adventure! Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and answered all of our (many, many) questions. From the history of the town, to the geology, and even the community in town, Aubrey was our expert. She made everyone feel welcome, excited for our hike, and made sure we were all safe and comfortable. This adventure is a little rough and tumble (and McCarthy road can be a little scary at times), but if you want to be in nature so beautiful you can drink from a stream AND be immersed in the warmest community you may ever see, this is the place to go. Thank you to the people of this quirky community for welcoming us and making us feel so at home ❤️
Back in August, me and my family had an incredible time with St. Elias Alpine Guides. We trekked and climbed on glacier, flew out on a bush plane to camp near a lake, went inside an ice cave and explored the abandoned Kennicott Mining Company. Our guide gave us really interesting insight on the geology and history of these places. I always felt safe and comfortable; they took extra care to make sure we had the proper equipment. Can't recommend them enough, it was a trip of a lifetime!

We did the half-day glacier tour, which is really 9am-3pm. The tour guide was very informative, kept the group moving along, and took us to some incredible places and views on the glacier.
All in all, quite a nice tour. Ice crampons for your boots come with the tour, and they have gloves and a backpack if you forget to bring one. Optional lunch is available for extra cost.
You can wear shoes, but boots are better, bring layers of clothes, rain gear or jacket, and gloves. You will need all of these: the ice is sharp, and the temperature varies from 60 to 32 degrees in minutes once you're on the ice. Rain is a given at any time. The total distance we walked round trip is about 5 miles, 3 on land, 2 miles on the ice itself.

We took the must do two-hour ore processing building tour. Walk up the mountain trail to the top of the building and then step into the top of this 1920s "stabilized" 14 floor building. It was truly an exceptional and fascinating step into the past. The guide explains the times, people and technology. We were careful and safe. I would not bring young children or uncontrollable teens since danger was all about. Start your Kennicott day early since you'll want to hike to the Glacier too

WOW! We had such an incredible time visiting some ridiculously beautiful places with St. Elias Alpine Guides. Tim, our guide, enhanced our experience with his friendly demeanor and vast knowledge of the area (and offering a hot beverage on a cold hike was the cherry on top)! Skolai pass was one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever been - a fly-in hike is a definite must. The glacier hike and ice caves were equally as awesome - try taking a plunge in a blue pool! Had a great time on the half day glacier hike, very informative tour of the copper mill, and the best time ever on the Nizina River rafting tour!
Greta Hill — Google review
We had an extremely informative tour through the coppermine. Not a standard talk, but a guide that could have gone on for hours with stories and history. Was adapting to the group, and the questions we had. We enjoyed it a lot :-)
Would highly recommend, just walking self guided would not have been the same experience.

This group is amazing. Did three trips with them during our stay. The Mill Tour was very informational and was great to get a better understanding of the history and significance of the area. The half day glacier hike was amazing! Landon was a great guide, his knowledge of the glacier features and areas was showing through. The blue pool jump was a highlight of the trip for sure! The river raft and flight see was another highlight. Gus was a great guide on the river. We are all ready to come back and do the extended backcountry hikes with your company!

such a beautiful place to just be and relax! my family and i went hiking on the root glacier for a day trip with a guide named max from 10-5ish with awesome views and a great adventure. we also got a tour of the mill with the same guide max and got to go back in time and imagine what is what like in the early 1900s! our last full day was filled with the white water rafting trip with guides harrison, max and kip. super easy going people and another exciting adventure with the lovely outdoors!! highly recommend this part of alaska as i felt at home with like minded outdoor people and it was just a super quirky and fun town/ people to be with!!!! thank you guides!
also ask your guide about the blue pool!

Fantastic tour. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and learning about the history of the mine. The best part was our guide who really brought the story of the mine and the people to life.

We visited Wrangel St. Elias National Park about three weeks ago. The highlight of our visit was the glacier hike with your company. Guides Brig and Jake were excellent! Very personable, skilled, and knowledgeable about the area. They made sure all fitness levels and age groups could enjoy the trek to the glacier. Being on the glacier and seeing it up close was amazing. We had the best time, even on a chilly, rainy day. Later in the afternoon we took the Kennicott Mill Tour with Brig. So cool to be able to go inside the mill and see it from that perspective. If it wasn’t a 3700 mile journey to get there, we would be repeat customers, but will for sure will recommend to our friends.
Julie M — Google review
You can do a self guided tour of Kennenott Mines but that doesn’t get you into the processing mill. It was well worth the $34 to have a very informative guide lead us through the levels of the processing mill and explain the processes and the working conditions. We really enjoyed our time on the tour. Our guide Jake was excellent! Highly recommended.

Rigorous hike and amazing views of the glacier and mountains. Guides are great and very informative and do their best to keep you safe. Trail down to the glacier is somewhat treacherous. Loose gravel and wet conditions on the last part of the trail is very challenging not to fall. Outfitter needs to improve this section of the trail. We had a wonderful time but injury risk is above average both in and off the glacier.
This place is amazing! The staff is so nice friendly and welcoming you will want to come back time and time again. the food is great as well as the selection in the gift shop you will not find a better pizza night on this side of the world!

Incredible experience! Chicken is one of the coolest small towns in Alaska. Chicken Gold Camp is a great place to stop in, camp short or long term and look for gold. Facilities are top-notch, and the store is the best curated gift shop in all of Alaska. There's literally a gift for everyone in the family. Make sure you try the food, the coffee and pizza night! And if you're lucky, grab a ticket to Chickenstock, which is a fabulous music festival that is held every summer with Chicken Gold Camp!

Excellent location, friendly people. Didn't use any of cabins as we travelled in RV
Danielle Clark De Bisschop — Google review
Chicken is VERY remote with a population of 12 according to the census. (More in the summer season) There is zero cell service. They have Wifi vouchers but I couldn’t get it to work on my iPhone. The sites are electric only 30 amp sites. There is a spot to fill your tank or containers with water. There are pit toilets and the showers cost $1/minute in $0.25 intervals. This is the place to stay when coming or going on the Top of the World Highway to/from Dawson City. There are gold panning activities too.
John Dale — Google review
Spent six nights here in late August. Worked my butt off, but pulled 4.3 grams of gold. I would come back here in a heartbeat! Friendly folks, great pizzas, and plenty of good advice from staff and other prospectors. Definitely want to come back for Chickenstock!
Jason Chudy — Google review
We were camping and stayed at an RV site. They have power, firewood, water, and showers available. Great food and coffee at the main shop and restaurant. Very friendly and helpful people there.
Scott Newlun — Google review
Good stop for 1-night, although campsites are expensive. Wi-Fi was not really free as advertised-it was limited to 100mb per 24 hr period which was misleading and disappointing. Good cafe and well stocked gift shop.
John Cloke — Google review
Best area I have found for gold panning. You can rent equipment and they will transport you to panning sites. Very helpful at teaching you how to find gold. Don't expect to get rich but you will find placer gold. Historic dredge on site is very interesting. Campground is nice, showers available. Outhouse for restrooms. Great gift shop and super friendly. Town of chicken also has a gift shop, saloon, and Cafe. 8 hours above Anchorage. Very remote.

I am totally flabbergasted! Back in 1985 after just getting married, I was twenty-five years old. My new wife and I drove up to chicken with all our gear for mining, food and building tools. All there was at the time was the little gravel road went to chicken and a tiny little store. We drove up to an old house that old lady owned that wrote a book and I can't remember her name. She told us we could park on the property for the summer while we hiked in 40 miles to 5 claims a friend wanted me to check for the summer. It took us about three weeks to go up and down and up and down and up and down the the mountains. Fighting deep tundra, rain and wet tents on our way. We finally got to our destination. It was a tiny little creek that ran into the Yukon river. There were old cabins and flood dams to wash away the over berden so they could pick the nuggets off of the bedrock. We built the cabin cash and a shower, it took us a good month to build. It was a lot of hard work. We came out with 10 oz mostly nuggets. Anyway, Chicken was just a tiny little store and the old lady's house. I'm sorry I keep calling her old lady, she was famous for living in the area in the old days and she wrote a book. Anyway, I can't believe there's an airport, more stores, camping, motels, it is actually a town now. It totally blows my mind! My ex lives up there in wasilla and she has all our photo album that I wished I could see again. It was an amazing adventure, good times and bad. Like I said: IT TOTALLY BLOWS MY MIND!

I visited chicken gold camp for two days in July this was a very unique experience. Being away from the busy city life and able to disconnect from it all was extraordinary. I stayed in their apartment which had all the amenities including a full kitchen! The only setback from the place is their timed shower which of course I understand because of the need to conserve water I definitely learned how to keep my showers short and efficient! We took advantage of a day of gold searching which was a once in a life time opportunity at least for me since I live in Florida. I am looking forward to returning to chicken in the future something I never thought I would say prior to staying at the chicken gold camp. Amazing place the staff is very friendly and they make great coffee!
Lidice T — Google review
Our RV spot was exactly what was described when we booked, spaces are tight but adequate. There is a cafe on site, but the opportunity to pan for gold or even have an authentic gold mining experience is the best reason to stay!

This is a treasure not to miss.
Do NOT be fooled by the modest exterior....WHEN you stop to see the huge miners pan with a mural painted on it, DO stop and go inside.
Displays of local animal life that are world class and are most excellent.
A few displays on the local native craft work and art as well.
They allow over night parking for free as well.

To be honest I figured you see one small town museum you've seen them all. Boy was I wrong! This museum is very well put together with dioramas and displays. There is a movie that loops so if you have time to sit and watch it's interesting. It takes about half an hour of really looking at the exhibits or 15 minutes of less on a run through. The movie is another half hour or so. This is one museum that is well worth the stop and it's only $5 cdn per adult! Talk about a steal.

Disappointing visit, found the attendant very lazy and unhelpful. Didn’t look up from gaming on his phone the whole time we were visiting.
Would not recommend visiting there until (mike Wiley) is replaced.
This was described to us as a life changing experience and I must say, it lived up to the expectations! We got on a flight very last minute and Surpaul was a fantastic pilot. If you have the time, this is a must do with this company. Thanks Sian and Surpaul!

If you have never felt totally insignificant in your life, this tour is for you.
And a special shout out to our Pilot and Guide Rafael, who knew that we were having so much fun he threw in an extra landing at the end.

My wife and I recently celebrated our 8th Wedding Anniversary on Canada 🇨🇦 Day, July 1st, 2020! The Ice Field Discovery company was absolutely amazing to work with. Everything from planning, the booking process, preflight orientation, landings, education provided on the landscapes during the flight was professionally delivered! Our pilot Flo took the time to help me get in and out of the plane (providing the step stool I needed), he took photos, and shared interesting information about the mountain ranges, glacier fields, and Mt. Logan (Canada’s Highest Mountain). What I really appreciated was that the staff didn’t treat us any differently because we were locals, we were treated as valued customers. I highly recommend Ice Field Discovery to local Yukoners or out of town tourists, and for people of all abilities! Ice Field Discovery will help make your once in a life time, memorable mountain experiences come true, and They will not disappoint! Thanks again to all the staff for making our wedding anniversary so special!

Yukon is a vast, rugged, remote landscape that is beyond description. You can drive the highways, hike some trails, or even float a river or two, but in doing so most people will only experience a fraction of the more accessible areas. To really get a feel for the immenseness of the Yukon, my wife and I chartered a two-hour flight with Icefield Discovery Tours. We were very specific in what we wanted to see; the landscape of Kluane National Park and the area north to the White River.
Weeks before the tour, I had emailed Icefield Discovery the locations I wanted to fly over. Arriving at the airfield we were met by Sian. I explained to Sian that we were a bit nervous about flying in a small plane, having never done that before. Sian introduced us to Surpaul, the pilot, and gave us rundown on Surpaul’s experience. They also showed us the flight patterned that we would be flying. Sian and Surpaul showed us the plane that we would be flying in and showed us the safety features. That was enough to convince us we were in good hands. From the takeoff to the landing, we felt comfortable and safe. It was a beautiful day for flying. And Surpaul showed us some amazing sites and told us about history and discoveries of the region. The flight was well worth the price and as we reflect on our trip to Yukon, Icefield Discovery was our favorite experience.

This was one of the coolest things I've ever done and was certainly one of the highlights from my Yukon trip.
My friend and I were booked for the The Ultimate Experience which includes landing on the icefield. Unfortunately the day of our flight the conditions weren't great but we decided to see go for a shorter flight without the landing. I'm so glad we still went for it.
The views from the plane were incredible. I would definitely do this again.

Had a great experience with icefield discovery. Folks were nice and knowledgeable. Must do if you are near the area or just drive over from Whitehorse/haines. It was worth it for us.
Icefield discovery has some trips that land on the glacier. Our group tried but it was sketchy (snowfall the previous day) so we bailed out. They charged us less because of that. They have a camp on the glacier during summer. You can probably hike upto that or get dropped there and do some hikes. Overall I had a great time, I will visit them again next time I am around there.

Shares a building with First Nations Cultural Centre and a Visitors Info Centre. This is an excellent place to spend time while in Haines Junction especially if you would like to go hiking and need help planning what to do. Fantastic displays with lots of hands on stuff, photos, and great stories. Very useful info centre with great selection of very useful pamphlets and booklets. Definitely stop here. Will take between 3-6 hrs to do all the displays.
It is a really nice place and a great very important place for the community. We were very lucky to be there today on aboriginal day and have free soup banik and cake. Very informative place for visitors to drop in and experience.

With information on the rich history of the area and First Nations culture, as well as many artifacts and local art features. If you love the outdoors (and you should if you're around here!) they have maps. In the summer they have staff to help you choose hiking trails in the area and rent bear cannisters.
I had a wonderful experience filming with animals. Getting up close and interaction with the animals is unforgettable. Steve works very hard to care for all of them, and he was very gracious in accommodating our requests and making us comfortable! His animal family is fortunate for his experience and care.
Thank you for everything Steve!

Steve is a knowledgeable host that clearly has a close bond with his animals. Patrick really made my visit so memorable, making sure my sister, son & his fiance and I had one on one time with the animals. I wish I would have gotten a photo with him. I wanted to stay in one of their cabins and never leave. I look at my photos every day. The porcupine was my favorite. And I'm from there, not even a tourist. I returned to Seattle and still think about The Wildlife Center every day.

This place is really cool. Animal sanctuary in Haines Alaska, several miles outside of town.
The owner is a happy eccentric whose love and passion for animals pervades his life, from all indications.
Wolverines, moose, caribou, mink, bears, and other animals can be seen here - all well-cared for by the staff.
Vincent Watson — Google review
Interesting place where it is obvious that there is much love and care for the animals here. Informative tour overall.
The only downfall is that the tour group was too large so it made it uncomfortable to stand around and wait your turn to see the animals. I think that our tour could have been split into 2 groups instead of one large one.
The bus ride from the cruise port was great. The bus driver was EXTREMELY interesting and full of fun stories. The bus ride to and from the Kroschel Wildlife Centre was one of our most favorite bus rides in all of the tours we have taken... and we take A LOT!!!

This place was amazing! It was hotter then Texas that day and I loved every minute of it! The guides are awesome and know so much about the animals and have great relationships with them. They work so hard at keeping the animals in a great atmosphere still wild and natural. I wish I could stay and just hang out with them.

I would give this 6 stars if I could. We went as part of a cruise ship excursion and everything was amazing from the bus driver to everyone working there. The animals were well cared for and we got amazing photos. We had a 2 year old with us and you will need to watch kids closely as these are wild animals (no fingers in fences!). Like others said it was a decent amount of walking on dirt paths and not stroller friendly. There was a gift shop at the end. There were also a couple of bathrooms.
Amanda Weissman — Google review
Toured the center as an excursion via Princess Cruise Lines and by far one of my favorite excursions of the trip. Connecting to animals was amazing and my daughter had a blast. She was very fond of Duck Henry and his caribou neighbors, although her joy of feeding them may leader to an ungulate obesity epidemic.

We had such a great day at the Center. Mr. Kroschel was a great story teller of the animals. We learned so much and enjoyed each and every animal we were able to see. Our bus driver, was excellent. She told us so many local stories and helped us spot wildlife along the way. If you are not sure if you should do this tour or another. Choose this one. You will be happy you did.

What an amazing experience. This is by far one of if not THE best excursions I've taken while cruising. Steve, Mario and Mario's daughter were fantastic. They are information and use humor to keep things lively. They should be nominated for a humanitarian award for all that they do for education and the environment. This is a long review so in the words of Steve. "Hey Mario, they are losing interest so it's time to move along"
