The direct drive from Iowa City to Des Moines is 114 mi (184 km), and should have a drive time of 1 hr 47 mins in normal traffic.
If you’re going on a road trip from Iowa City to Des Moines, we did the research for you and compiled some great stops along the way — with top places to visit like The District: Czech Village & New Bohemia and National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library, or the ever-popular Brucemore.
The top stops along the way from Iowa City to Des Moines (with short detours) are Iowa State Fairgrounds, Iowa State Capitol, and Reiman Gardens. Other popular stops include National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library, Amana Colonies, and Pella Historical Village & Vermeer Windmill.
Brucemore is a historical estate built in 1836 encircled by gardens that offers tours, concerts, and cultural events. The property includes a gift shop and flower market. Visitors can experience the heritage of this mansion through various programs hosted at the venue. Brucemore's rich history is well-preserved and celebrated, making it an essential destination for anyone interested in exploring the past of Cedar Rapids' culture.
Amazing at Christmas time! Definitely a must see and worth the ticket price. Going when the basement bar is open to tours is really neat to see as well! My teenage kids and I really enjoyed the entire tour.

Closed for repairs. But visitor center was open. Could also walk around the gardens. Beautiful.

Brucemore is a lovely 19th. Century mansion. It contains original art and architectural details by Grant Wood. Especially charming is a small fresco on an upstairs sleeping porch. There is a great deal of beautiful woodwork in the main hall and reception rooms. Be sure to look up, to see the Classical-themed mural that borders the walls there. Most of the furnishings and domestic items are original to the house. The remainder are authentic period items. Keep an eye out, and you will discover a link to the Titanic tragedy. During this Christmas season, the home boasts 14 holiday trees, as well as many other seasonal decorations. In the growing season, the gardens are open to the public with no fee. The grounds are still recovering from the 2020 derrecho, so you will see many newly planted trees; but many large, mature trees survived. Brucemore is a great destination for adult lovers of history, art, and architecture. Because it is a "hands-off" museum, families with children may prefer to visit only the gardens. (12/2021)

Excellent time at the concert in the courtyard. The musicians were very talented and entertaining. It was well organized, tables all had great views, parking on the grounds was easy in and easy to get out quick. Very pleased.

A tour of Brucemore is always a pleasure and is especially so during the holiday season. Creative and beautifully executed holiday displays that encompass every room. Not only lovely trees and garlands, but the displays also include audio descriptions and music appropriate to each vignette. At other times of the year, interesting and beautiful gardens and outdoor events provide diverse entertainment. Large amounts of structural and landscape recovery have taken place following the damaging storm that occurred three years ago. This must have taken an army of dedicated and passionate supporters. Thankful for it.

We were there for a TCR production caled Once! What a great night. So fun to sit out on the lawn with a full moon and enjoy a great production. Parking was a breeze. Getting out just as easy!

Brucemore is great and a wonderful way to see how the wealthy lived from 1880s until when the last owner passed in 1970s. Great Midwest history. Wonderful pieces of art and furnishings.

Me and my dad chose to visit this place for my last day of staying in Cedar Rapids, the mansion and the grounds itself were very beautiful and scenic. We ordered the tickets for a non guided tour before we got there. The staff who scanned our tickets told us that it was fine to walk around the house and that everything checked out. The staff at the front was nice but looked at us a little weird and overall seemed off. My dad and I went to the 3rd floor first and chose to make our way to the bottom floor from there. As we had gotten up there a female staff worker had followed us up and said told us we has snuck away from the rest of them. We explained that we had the no tour guide tickets and she smiled sarcastically and preceded to follow us around while we toured. No matter what floor we were on she followed us and tried to guide us. We even followed all the rules, didn’t touch anything, only went in doors that were open, no flash photography, etc. It was tolerable until we made our way back down to the first floor while in the library, the staff kept giving us glances and seemed to be keeping such an eye on us as if we were trying to steal something. Then right as we left we overheard one of the staff say “they’re finally leaving.” Overall it was not an experience I would like to come back too unless the staff were to change.

After waiting for the house to open, we were turned away because we had not purchased tickets ahead of time. There was nothing posted outside of the house stating tickets were needed or that they needed to be purchased ahead, we were told we could wait another 30 minutes and come back for a self guided tour but weren't aloud to go at the time we were there ....we were the first people in line when they opened the house. We went ahead and left as we didn't have the time to wait the additional time and it saved our group $70.00. So I would highly recommend finding and purchasing the tickets ahead of time or don't waste your time by even going.

We didn't get to go inside, but the gardens and grounds were lovely and there were plenty of photo opportunities. The pet cemetery was a highlight of our visit! I would also recommend reading the informational plaques and checking the QR codes for more content on their website. The staff was friendly and helpful.

Such a beautiful place, the entire complex of buildings and grounds are so well maintained and offer a wonderful experience to visitors. I love how they are so active and offer great entertainment to this community. It is gorgeous in both winter and summer with all of the beautiful flowers 💐 in the garden.

Brucemore, a park-like, 26-acre estate in the heart of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is the site of a Queen Anne-style mansion, formal gardens, a children's garden, night garden, pond, orchard, and woodland. It is a great place to take photo, take a tour, or attend a community event! Check their website for events and visiting information.

Beautiful mansion, excellent and informative tour! (Many stairs, so be prepared!) Lovely grounds to walk around. Also, another exhibit hall with many pictures, history and some artifacts. Movies(!) taken in the first half of the 1900's of life in the Hall family: playing with their pet lion, behind the scenes of Gone with the Wind, and other everyday occurrences!!! Such a great tour. I highly recommend.

We had such a great time touring this beautiful mansion. We loved reading about the history of the family that lived in the house. We will be back another time, I'm sure. Highly recommend seeing this house if you enjoy history and grand homes.

Not a huge fan. This should be a funky hipster paradise, but it is pretty much a tourist trap. Most of the places serve more wings and busch light than they do Czech food. There is really nothing to do other than eat, and drink. It reminds me of the downtowns that serves tourist attractions without the attraction.

Wonderful area, a lot of shops and restaurants. All super well manicured and clean. Great place for photography or just a good afternoon of pure vibes. I even took my senior photos here!

This was my first visit to the museum. The immigrant house was fascinating. As were the galleries.
They had several cases with glass on display. The docent said they have quite a bit more, it was just not currently on display. It would be wonderful to see more. Maybe next time.
The docents were very knowledgeable about their subjects and very friendly.

Went with my mom and this year my aunt to the annual Christmas festivities that they hold every year to celebrate the Czech Christmas traditions. Czech town has a few little stores and annual festivities in the summer celebrating the morel mushroom. It's called hobby days. Check it out it's a great time to spend with family and learning new things.

What a wonderful experience. Everyone was friendly, nice, and helpful. The exhibits were interesting and full of history. The library is a good place to start a genealogy search if you have Czech/Slovakian heritage. We were fortunate enough to get a chance to witness the Bohemian Garnets exhibit which is only at this museum out of all of the museums in the USA and is only here for a short time before going back to Prague. Thank you for this wonderful experience!

The village is a small area and it's very walkable and you can visit a multitude of interesting shops. Make sure you visit the Czech Museum since I found it worthy. I had very little concept of the struggles in this country and after a visit I came away with tremendous respect upon learning the history and endurance of the Czech people. This museum has an unusable way of transmitting personal struggles. You must visit. Honestly, I am not a fan of museums, but I do recommend this one. I especially enjoyed the film showing how this large museum was moved after a severe flood. Fascinating.

The National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library is a cultural institution that showcases exhibits on the Czech and Slovak experience. It features a genealogy library, a Christmas market, and other attractions. Despite not being very large, it's definitely worth the admission fee regardless of whether or not you have any heritage ties to these cultures. If you're ever in Cedar Rapids, this place is worth stopping by along with other nearby attractions.
Incredible displays of information of the Czechoslovakian culture! Beautiful exhibits, rich history, and informative staff. Highly recommend to anyone - local or otherwise.

Pros: Some interesting history. Lots of traditional garments. Interactive displays. Nice place to visit for an hour or so. Friendly staff.
Cons: Parking. Price. Only about 30% of the total size of the building is dedicated to museum exhibits, disappointed there wasn't more to see.

Very nice museum. It had a bunch of pictures, films, music, really captured what it was like according to history books. Hands on exhibits, a house from the years, it's a great history lesson and it keeps children entertained with all the stuff to look at.

My wife and I had some time to burn between landing in Cedar Rapids and catching a shuttle to Dubuque, and we found this museum on the map and couldn't resist stopping in to learn some familial history.
We only had about 20 minutes, so I asked the staff for the highlights. We were able to rush through the Faces of Freedom exhibit in the Jiruska gallery and the Sleger Family cabin. The exhibits were informing, entertaining, and plentiful. The staff was so kind and understanding of our situation, and very knowledgeable.
While our time there was way too short for my liking, it's only prompted me to want to learn more. If I ever find myself back in Cedar Rapids I'd make a point to schedule a longer visit.

My husband and I stumbled in here, the displays were so informative and I love learning about another culture. We ended walking around for a couple of hours, the clothes and music were by far my favorite, the ship was also pretty cool. The gift shop seemed crazy high in prices but worth getting a couple of trinkets to commemorate your visit, the ladies working there were so nice!

I've known about this museum for what seems like forever, but had never visited until recently. So on a recent trip to Iowa, I decided I would spend one half of a day checking out things in Cedar Rapids and this was on my agenda. It's not a particularly huge museum, but definitely worth the admission fee to check out the exhibits on display, whether you have and Czech or Slovak heritage or not. If you are passing through Cedar Rapids, it's a good place to stop in as well as checking out some of the places in the surrounding neighborhood!

I visited the National Check and Slovak Museum and Library for the first time Saturday, February 3, 2018 to check out the Art of Accessories exhibit.
I really enjoyed the exhibit of folk art and the detail of the handwork that was exhibited. Also the permanent exhibit of the velvet revolution was very informational and I appreciated the interactive immersion of the exhibits.
I am thinking of joining as an Individual, renewable annually for only $35.00 a year. Gets you in free and I would be supporting the museum.
I had fun, would like to go back soon and encourage you to check it out. Admission is $10.00. Not bad for the few hours would could spend soaking up the history.
Also I watched 4 Bald Eagles fishing on the river from the entryway. very neat.

Cedar Rapids Museum of Art boasts a collection of over 7,000 works that emphasizes on American art from the 20th century. The museum is cozy and not too large, making it a pleasant space to explore. Notably, the museum features an impressive exhibition of Grant Wood's artwork, including his famous "Woman with Plants." Visitors can also enjoy other artworks such as Frieseke's "Before the Window.
Great small collection representing some of Iowa and Cedar Rapids in particular artists, great gift shop.
Plan between 1-3 hours to visit.
Although “Winding Stream” by George Symons is not related to Iowa, it’s a great addition to the collection.
Enjoy and thanks for reading!

We went during the free summer option. The atmosphere is quiet and respectful but yet encourages one to visit with others about the art and the artists. I especially love the little plaques beside the picture that not only explain the picture but also the life of the artists. Friendly staff makes it a must visit when in downtown cedar rapids!!!

This is an excellent museum to see several local artists - including Grant Wood. We visited during the week so it was not crowded. It was a nice place to visit during a very hot July day. My out-of-state visitors found really interesting, too (at least that is what they posted on Facebook). No admission charge when we went and free parking in the lot in back.

I liked the large amount of contemporary and local art that they had on display, plus they have an array of paintings from influential Americans artists like Grant Wood. This museum proves that you there are great art museums outside of big cities, so it’s worth a visit if you’re ever in the area!

Lovely renovated art museum. Major showcase for Grant Wood who grew up in this area. His work reflects the people, the place and the emotional tenor of life in this area.
The museum itself carries the multiple burdens of education, showplace and cultural repository remarkably well. Cedar Rapids has much to be proud of here and I expect to be a regular visitor.

How many of us go to visit art museums and other similar activities when we go out of town, yet have never visited our own museums? Don't skip out on the Cedar Rapids Art Museum! They have a lovely collection of Grant Wood and other artists. It is a must see! The gift shop is nice too.

2002, the Museum was given the building that houses the original studio of Grant Wood. Located just three blocks from the Museum, the loft studio, known by its fictitious address of 5 Turner Alley, was designed and constructed by Wood, who lived and worked there between 1924 and 1935. It was here that he painted American Gothic (1930)—now part of the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago—and many of his most famous paintings. The Grant Wood Studio is open to the public for guided tours from 12:00 PM-4:00 PM on Saturdays and Sundays from April through December.

Very nice, very cosy and not too big museum. Of course, I loved their Grant Wood exhibition. His "Woman with Plants" is gorgeous. Another beautiful woman is exposed on Frieseke's "Before the Window". Only these two pearls could be a reason to visit CRMA but they have much much more! They have super hospitable and helpful staff at front desk and in the shop. And I want to say spacial thank for the right way lights setup. It make your experience so more pleasant.
The prices are outstanding. The vegetable plants and flowers are wonderful. I can't wait to try the strawberry and cream green tea. The best is they have brick cheese. I will be back.

Have enjoyed this Amish grocer for decades, both in their current and former locations. One can find very unique ingredients here, such as uncommon dried herbs. Great selection of spices, candy, baking mixes, grains, canning supplies, locally made goods, and cheese. Great for special diets. Wide and clean aisles and fair per pound pricing. Everything is simple and no nonsense, and personally I really appreciate that. Very highly recommended.

Probably the best Grocery Store I've ever been to, but I didn't like all the people swarming around me like flies on doodoo. They have everything you can think of and probably some things that you can't think of. Their prices ranged from very cheap to expensive, depending on what you want to buy. Their meat was kind of hard to find, but a guy showed me where the cooler was, and I was quite impressed. The meat looked great and was cheap (under $5 a pound for ribeye). I also found some cheese in that cooler that looked really good and it was super cheap. It was cheese shipped directly from some local cheese place in Wisconsin. I highly recommend this place.

The Amana Colonies in Eastern and Central Iowa are a cluster of traditional German villages that offer unique shopping experiences that showcase handmade goods such as soap, brooms, and baked items. The residents of these villages originally emigrated from Germany in search of religious freedom and lived communally by cooking together and sharing resources. Notably different from the Amish settlers, visitors can learn about Czechoslovakian culture at the Cedar Rapids museum while enjoying fresh-baked kolaches or having a traditional Czech meal.
We visited this lovely little town Sunday afternoon, and there were not too many visitors. So we took our time to visit each of the stores, each of which has its own uniqueness and is fun to explore.
Unlike many other historical places, this place has not become a tour trap but still pretty much keeps an atmosphere that is one of the kind. We really enjoyed it!

My dad and I stopped in Amana after touring around Cedar Rapids and had a lovely afternoon visiting the general store, meat shop, and brewery. If you are looking for a slice of midwest life, make sure to stop by this region of the state to learn more about German settlers and the life they have made for themselves in the US. There is plenty to buy so make sure to bring that extra spending cash and a little patience as it is popular during the summer months and the winter holidays.

The Amana Heritage Society in Iowa offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of the region's settlers. Visitors can explore several houses with shops, including a large general store with Christmas connections. The heritage museum provides a video introduction to early settlers, while the nearby house offers two levels of further exploration, including artifacts like a radar range from the 1960s.
Excellent history not only to watch on a movie screen. But to walk and take in the true meaning of the Amana people and there hard but rewarding lives.

Entrance fee of $10/ adult seemed high until we saw everything. Started with the video about the history. It was comprehensive but it could have explained more about how the community navigated " the big change" when they stopped being a communal living situation. It would be interesting to hear more about the shift from individuals. Unfortunately, I am guessing the adults are all dead by now. It is worth your time and $$ to experience this.

The interesting history of this area of IA added another level of history that you may not know about the settlers of the region. There are several houses along the street with shops of different interests for all to enjoy. General store being the largest with Christmas connected. The heritage museum has a nice video start to give you basic understanding of the early settlers. Then on to house with two levels of further exploring and interest. Even the radar range that grandparents may have had from the 60's!! Enjoy your walk along both sides of the street, park in middle or ends to enjoy your time here.

This time with visitors (my bro in law had never been here) we took the time to watch the video, visit their museum, Temple, stores, talk to some ladies about their history and evolution during more than a century. Worth the time, there are books and videos to watch if you want to learn more.

I go there about once a year to do some shopping, but I haven't been there since the pandemic started. I was surprised how quiet it was; probably 35 cars in the entire parking lot at noon on a Friday? Not as busy as I recall; no matter, makes the stores easier to shop in! Okay place to shop, but nothing special.

Over half empty. Of the stores, some were filled with stock but lights off in the middle of a week day and a Saturday. Little selection in many stores but a few great boutique stores and the Famous Footwear made it a worthwhile stop.
Tanger Outlets needs to up its game & lower rents to attract stores.
It could be such a great place to have what locals and travelers need with some care and thought. It needs some constant hours for stores to meet.

I love outlet malls. They have a variety of stores with great prices. I can enjoy a shopping experience without the feeling of a big crowd which is really nice. It is currently my favorite shopping destination in Iowa.

Shopped the Nike Clearance Store and Columbia outlet. Found some amazing mark downs on clothing, shoes and branded bags. Reasonably priced compared to major retailers.

Stop and shop here every October when I'm in Iowa for the Madison County covered bridge festival. The Columbia outlet is awesome! Also enjoy the Eddie Bauer, Under Armour and Bath and Body Works stores. Think it's wonderful that they have a dedicated pet play area. Easy access on and off Interstate 80 20 miles west of Coralville/Iowa City.

Awesome place! Got to shop and parked our semi truck. I am saving this location so I can shop while in the area again. They have dog park as well.
Thank you management.

Stopped for a quick visit however ended up visiting more than we expected. The pink card offer of 25% discount helped us this time as we were planning for a event. Based on my personal Tanger outlets visits this one seemed to have little more offer than other similar outlets(maybe were just lucky). Some employees might not apply the offer unless you specifically pay attention to the final check out amount. It happened to us in one instances and when we pointed out final checkout amount dropped considerably.

Its a really good place for shopping. There are many stores with lot of options. Clean and well maintained. Highly recommended. The parking lot was like 70% full so it was bustling with people.

Offers many stores in one location. Mostly national name-brand outlet stores with lots of selection. A nice time-saver for those who live nearby and don't want to drive to Cedar Rapids or Iowa City. Pricing and wide selection make this a competitive option for nearby malls.

Seems like several of the stores have closed. Still plenty of stores there you just want to verify the ones you wish to visit are still open

For a outlet place I expected great prices, Under Armour and wrangler where the only places I felt I scored. Some deals but most stores where same price as original store. Not impressed for outlet mall not sure I'll be back.
Fireside Winery in Marengo, IA is a charming winery with outside seating in both the front and back. The back patio offers a beautiful setting with trees, making it especially lovely during the fall season. Visitors can enjoy a variety of wines including Autumn Spice and Holiday Spice, perfect for warming up on chilly days. The winery also offers accommodation options such as an Air BnB rental and is dog-friendly.
Did a wine tasting. Very informative on the different wines! Highly recommend it.

Terrific stop for any cross country road stop. Nice people, sometimes live music, excellent small plates for with wine. Dog friendly - which is a plus for our family. Take in the beautiful scenery. Enjoy!!! A happy place.

A nice winery in a great setting. We stayed the night here as part of Harvest Hosts, and they also have an Air BnB rental option.
They have something for everyone in terms of wine, with solid dry reds through sweets and ciders.

They have outside seating, in front and back. The back patio is very beautiful with the trees, especially in the fall. I had their Autumn Spice wine, it delicious, and perfect for chilly days or nights and it can be warmed. Also tried the Holiday Spice, it was good also.

Walking the grounds and chilling by the firepit was bliss. I would come back to Iowa just to stop here again.

Super nice lady at the reception. The wine was really good as well. We took the wine tasting and picked the dryer ones. We stayed in the back using harvest host app. Really nice place right off the main road.

Casual casino hotel offering 4 restaurants, a bar & an outdoor arena, plus mobility scooters.
Stayed 2 nights, renovated rooms are wonderful. Wonderful front desk staff, the bar n grill has excellent hot, tasty food, casino experience was great, no masks if vaccinated, all staff wore masks, 95% of patrons did not. Was never worried. Games were paying out well during my visit.

Was pleasantly surprised when I stayed there last night while trucking through the area. Room was very nice, especially for the price. Everybody I spoke with was very nice and helpful. Ate dinner at Lucky's Grill. Had the chicken special. Santa Fe chicken or something like that, with rice. Was delicious. Casino was a lot larger than I expected. Not very smokey. I will definitely be staying there again next time I'm driving thru.

For my birthday weekend we had booked a room for July 3rd to see the fireworks behind the casino. We found out after we had checked in that the fireworks had been cancelled with no explanation! The fireworks was the entire reason we had booked our room! The buffet was not open -- only Lucky's was open and the food was sub-par. No one to seat us -- had to wait. Finally got seated then had to wait an hour for our food. The server was great but the food and the waiting for it was not. Also noted that doors that had been closed for repairs at the entrance were still not repaired. We won't be back. It is a tired and run down casino.

My first time ever going here was a great experience! I’ve lived in Iowa my whole life and have never been here until recently. This casino has a lot and is convenient for those who like to play for long periods of time since there are many drink and dining options. We chose to stay in the hotel and made a trip out of it for my birthday. The staff is excellent and extremely knowledgable, friendly, understanding, and accommodating. They all did everything to make sure we were taken care of. Plus, we enjoy going to casinos in our travels and this is by far the most reasonably priced places for drinks, ATM fees, food, and the perks/points/free play are earned quickly and easily compared to any other. Highly recommend for anyone who enjoys gambling. And yes, there is smoking, but all casinos in Iowa have this, and some have absolutely no nonsmoking areas. The only thing that was a little off putting was that kids are allowed in the casino and on the floor. I’ve never seen this here, but for dining it’s allowed.
Kathryn — Google review
From the minute you walk in the door you are losing. Even though they do not require you to wear masks if you are vaccinated but they never check so why even say that. The whole back side of the casino where the bar and the bands play is 100% smoking so that was not enjoyable to go in that area for me or enjoy the band. I never saw one person getting paid or hitting a jackpot or never once heard an announcement of any jackpots being won the whole night I was there. Every machine I played I never came out ahead on any of them. The food court was amazing plenty of choices you will never go hungry so that is a huge Plus in my book. Always food readily available. I drove an hour out of my way to go try a new place and probably will not be going back anytime soon.

Less and less impressed with the seafood buffet. The crab legs were pretty tough and dried out this time. The Asian section is just not good at all. The American Diner section only had 3 foods in it the whole time we were there and the fried chicken was really dry...usually great fried chicken! BBQ Station okay. All the shrimp was really good! The prime rib was very good.

At the time of this review, the hotel is under construction. However, it is always pleasant and clean every time we stay there and the rooms are very affordable. The only downside for us is that the pool is closed because it's part of the construction but you are still able to get to the rooms and everything else which is nice.
Alex Smith — Google review
The rooms were spacious and clean. We got the opportunity of early check in. The staff is friendly and nice. Long ride from Waterloo but it's worth it!
Yvette Lopez — Google review
It was dirty! The smoke section needed all filters changed, they were visible dirty and even though there was a low attendance, it smelled heavily of concentrated cigarette smoke just going from the floor to get to the hotel. The food quality in the food court lacked and as one example... The ground beef patties were not cooked thoroughly and we addressed that. The server cooked two more as we asked him to cook it to well done because they were pink! Again, not thoroughly cooked and did not taste like real beef! The parking ramp was closed, both of the revolving doors were broke down. Machines did not pay out at all! It was my favorite place to gamble and stay overnight. However, it was the worst I've seen that casino and we will probably not return and instead go to Riverside! Hotel rooms are not as nice as I remember them being in the past. What happened to Meskwaki?

My son's father, who was 1/4 Indian, always enjoyed going here, even when it was only one building and had only bingo. Very happy to see how well they have down over the years The historical nature and the richness of the people who gather there makes this a must go if you are in the area. Great people run the casino and the travel Lodge directly in front of the casino.

It's a bit of a drive from Cedar Rapids, but it is the only place in Eastern Iowa that has "big bingo". The hotel was recently refurbished and the rooms are great. A really fun pool as well. The buffet always good and Lucky's serves a really great (and huge) breakfast.
Alan Lewis — Google review
Highest paying Bingo in Iowa. It has really gone downhill since covid. I sure miss those extra salty chicken strips they sold in the bingo hall. They have free pop/coffee in the bingo hall and casino floor, so that's a plus. The real winner here is the buffet. Bringo some cash you're okay with losing, don't expect/hope to win, and fill up on the food.

My husband and I travel to Wisconsin, Minnesota, Missouri and all over Iowa and Illinois to different casinos. We both put Meskwaki as our favorite. The food , rooms, and service are top notch. The staff are all friendly and helpful. We travel close to 3 hours to stay there. We both enjoy the slots, we never go intending to win but to have fun on overnight get away. One of us usually wins some or break even. The food is great.

We came to play BINGO. Nice setup. Had to wait in a long line for the Buffet, but it was worth it. We didn't stay at the hotel as it was full
John Van Horn — Google review
We went for the Friday night buffet. We hadn't been in a couple years so we were hoping it had improved. The selection on the buffet was less than before and it just ok. The price has gone up a lot - understandable like everything else right - but for what was offered, the price wasn't worth it.
Stephanie Findlay — Google review
I didn't visit the hotel I just passed through to get a bite to eat as I don't indulge in gambling (I have no reasons why you shouldn't, I'm just a math person and it's not logical to me mathematically).
As far as the casino itself, the atmosphere seemed almost like an overgrown arcade. There's even farmers in overalls on the slot machine. Were it not for the cigarette smoke I would've given it 4 stars. The place feels like a cigar lounge. It's smoked out.
The restaurant "luckys" is one of the few places you can actually breathe. It also has good food and the staff was nice and service was okay.
All in all I would have to say 4 stars on the restaurant 2 on the casino. Now my opinion is not the end all be all because as I said before, I don't gamble. I'm talking about strictly the atmosphere.

The smoke is overwhelming the moment you walk in the door. This is a great place if you smoke, not so much if you don't. The rooms appear to be recently renovated and are well organized and comfortable.

Got food poisoning from Buffett. Didn’t make it out of casino before started vomiting. Finally made it home and was sick all day into night. Public restrooms closed. So annoying, and they’ve been closed for months. Walked out of buffet and the smoke smell is absolutely sickening. No pool or party area for families. No salon, no RV parking, gift shop is so non native in a Native casino. Food has definitely gone downhill. No identifying poster or plaque to identify management. Definitely has gone downhill the past 5 years.
A must see if your travels bring you to this part of Iowa! Designed by Lois Sullivan (interiors, too). Perfect example of his maxim: Form ever follows function. I was very excited to see the bank. Huge fan of Adler and Sullivan, as well as Frank Lloyd Wright. The town had a makeover a few years back, and the town looks great. Every intersection the design of the star design on the bank. Plenty of restaurants, and Central Park is cool with the band shell. I enjoyed my day. Thanks.

Question: What is the best wine? Answer: The one you like. I have not aways been a fan of Iowa wines. Some that I have had are indeed made from grapes but all too often had a medicinal after taste.
So at Tassel Ridge (Leighton, Iowa) I went for the wine family I like most: the dry, deep reds. I tried three: the American Merlot, Robert Duncan, and the Iowa Marquette, and I have to say that I would drink them again...and again.
All three had very pleasant bouquets and a good finish. Finally, Iowa wines that did not taste a little like cough medicine. I bought two bottles.
But our trip to Tassel Ridge was more than just finding and trying wines. We also enjoyed a Bistro lunch (soup, salad, sandwich). Again like the wine, very satisfying. These lunches are served M-F and on select Saturdays and Sundays.
On other dates, Tassel Ridge hosts wine events. Best to check the website site for a full listing.
The winery is quite large with both indoor and outdoor seating. It is clean, tastefully decorated with room to shop for wine accessories.
If you are looking for a cheap Iowa wine experience, don't go. The wines are not cheap. Tassel Ridge vintners take pride in their work and the prices reflect the quality and craftsmanship of the wines and the vintners.

Beautiful place. Food was great! Wines were very yummy. The only thing I didn't care for was I felt like the lady that waited on us was snooty, like she felt we were beneath her. It made me feel uncomfortable and out of place being there. The gentleman that brought us our food was very nice though.

The BEST winery we have been to! We did the sweet wine tasting, and daaaang! We were not expecting to get the platter of cheese, crackers, bread, oil, and jam to do the tasting with. It was absolutely phenomenal! We loved the red white and blue wine and the rockets glare rose. The jam made with the wine is delicious! We bought a couple jars of that as well. And then we bought some chocolate sauce.
I only wish they weren't a 3.5 hour drive to get there. If you see this, are you able to ship products to a local store closest to me (like HyVee) in Council Bluffs so I can drive over there and pick it up???
Great, enough lifeguards, fun slides, nice lazy river. We really loved our experience, went with little kids and teenagers and everybody had a blast! Also the concessions are so affordable.

I do love to swim, but I'd much rather pay twice as much to swim in the YMCA because the aquatic center is always a disappointment when I go here. Yesterday, ALTHOUGH THE HOURS SAY THEY CLOSE AT 7PM ON WEEKENDS, they closed at 6pm. Me, my friend and our 2 girls arrived at 4:45pm. We paid $4 to get in each. We immediately had to take a break out of the water, then had to leave at 6, when we were all under the impression that we could swim until 7 pm. So, we paid full price to swim for 1 hour. Also, the last time we were here, someone defecated in the water right after we entered the pool, and we did not get a refund or a rain check. We paid full admission price and barely got our toes wet before the pool closed down due to feces contaminating the water. Also, the consession stand food is from last summer.they use the old food that they don't sell the previous year. I feel they closed early yesterday because the lifeguards wanted to go home early, even though there was well over 100 people there on one of the hottest days yet this year... I feel the YMCA is a better deal even though it's $8 per person because we always actually get to swim for at least a few hours. I feel I've been ripped off from the aquatic center almost everytimeI've been there.

The Pella Historical Village provides an opportunity to experience 19th-century life through a collection of 22 period buildings, including the childhood home of Wyatt Earp. Visitors can explore the Scholte House and Gardens, which once belonged to the founder of Pella, and take a tour of the Pella Opera House that includes an organ concert. The nearby Kalona Historical Village offers insight into the Amish and Mennonite way of life, as well as delicious treats from Kalona Bakery.
This was an incredible experience! Our tour guide, Trisha, and the gentleman at the top of the mill were very, very enthusiastic in showing our group the inner workings of the windmill. It is always awesome to see such passion. Pretty cool to see Wyatt Earp's boyhood home too! Thank you ALL!

I LOVED this place! We came during the off season, so it was very calm with only a few other people there.
The staff were informative and kind. Our guide for the windmill was awesome! I wish I could remember his name so I could name him personally in this review.
The village outside was beautiful and so full of information! Wyatt Earp’s home was my favorite place to see. I never realized how sad his life’s story was.
Dogs are not welcome in here (pretty much the entire town of Pella, for that matter).
It was a tiny bit pricey ($15), but when you consider all the work that goes into maintaining a place like this it isn’t too bad.
100% recommend going there! I plan on going back.

Finally came out for the Tulip Festival. My daughter's idea to celebrate Mother's Day and it could not have been more perfect! We were worried about crowds and parking on Saturday, so we got there at 9. The crowds were manageable, parking was a short walk and everything we wanted to do and see we got in. I HIGHLY recommend getting the tickets for the museum and windmill. Fascinating demonstrations, delicious, freshly made in front of you Danish Letters, and beautiful grounds to stroll.

We toured the Windmill and the Village June 18th. Paul was our guide for the Windmill. Paul was very knowledgeable and answered alot of questions along the way. Great experience for young and old. There is an elevator but this tour requires alot of walking and stair climbing. The gift shop is great with friendly staff. We toured the Village on our own afterwards. The Earp house and the library was the highlight of the Village for us. My only suggestion would be that the gift shop offer water for sale. It was very hot the day we took this tour some cold water would have been great after. Great experience and well worth the price.
Great track to see a race. Beautiful facility, clean and easy free parking. INDYCAR was a fantastic, the cars could pass just about anywhere on the track. The indyLights or NXT Cars were about as fun to watch as the big guys. Concerts this year, let’s say the lineup was great, the sound sucked. Speakers were not synced so there was an echo. Sad. Overall we will be back!

Not a huge race fan but I enjoy experiences. I've been to the Indy500 and NASCAR cup series at Martinsville, Richmond, and Vegas. The track here in Newton is decent compared to the others.
Stopped at the Love's station for food before the first race. We had heard people mumble about the food inside the speedway and didn't want to spend an insane amount of money on sub-par meals. The people around us were not happy with their purchases. Luckily, the Chester's we ate beforehand was 🔥 and it cost us next to nothing.
Getting in and out of the parking area is a challenge. There are tractors and golf carts to pick you up depending on availability. We just parked on the outer edges and walked so that we could leave the area before traffic got backed up. Yes, it was a long walk in the heat (~20 minutes) but totally worth it not to get stuck in a 45 minute traffic jam like others. Not sure that Uber/Lyft drivers can get close enough to pick visitors up. I saw a lot of people have to walk to junctions at the bottom of the hills in order to get to their rides since roads were blocked.
As I said earlier, I'm not much into racing so we left during the laps and came back for the concerts. The sound was decent from where we were sitting. Section 301 the first day, and section 210 the second day. Be aware that people will try to sit wherever for the concerts and you'll have to tell people to get out of your seats if you're not there the whole time. There's also a lot of good standing room under the bleachers and by the concessions. The sound was still good there. I didn't get any echo until we walked toward the far edges.
It was a cool experience and I'm glad I did it.

Iowa Speedway did an amazing job this weekend. Saturday was just brutal with 100 degree heat and I really feel the track did everything in their power to keep fans cool. They had several cooling centers and multiple mist stations for people to cool off. Blue bunny was even handing out pop cycles. The racing was great all weekend. The concerts were amazing and hope they continue this each year. Thanks for the great event.

Iowa Speedway has had its' ups and downs since Rusty Wallace brought this track to life. The ticket prices are very reasonable and food and drinks are not bad either. We attended the Indycar race under the lights in 2019 and had a great time even with the big storm that rolled in. Indycar & the Speedway did a great job of drying the track when the rain finally stopped. It's a great track and very fast for the Indycars. Not a bad seat and convenient to concessions. In 2022 there will be a full weekend with a day race and a night race and big name entertainment. With Hy-Vee on board things are looking up for the speedway. Get out and enjoy some great entertainment at the Iowa Speedway.

Went to the Iowa Speedway for the first time ever. What a neat experience! Great area, the track is awesome, and the racing was great and entertaining! Right off of I-80 and really easy to get to. Highly recommend for a fun outing!

We won’t to the Hy-Vee INDYCAR race. It’s a well laid out speedway, with good amenities and grand stands. Would advise buying car parking so you don’t have a long walk.

We have season tickets here. We park in the RV terrace in the middle of turn 3. Awesome spot for us. If there is any kind of weather the track announcers are consistently keeping everyone updated. The checkin process is super fast and simple. Great people all around. Wish they had more events here!

Maytag blue cheese has always been the best of the best. I’ve sourced it for decades. What made me write this review is I purchased directly from the farm and my gosh, the speed at which I received my cheese left my head spinning. Less than 24 hours after placing my order online my cheese was at my door; and that was with standard shipping! Please keep doing what you’re doing, because you do it excellently.

As a girl from Wisconsin that loves her cheese Maytag bleu cheese is the best! Even though you’re in Iowa. Lol. I live in Florida now and order a big wheel of bleu cheese every few months. It’s always packaged well and just simply amazing! Thank you!!!!

Impressive hospitality from the entire staff. Everyone was so welcoming. The Maytag Blue is a world-class cheese. The popcorn (grown on-site) was also exceptional. Looking forward to visiting again with the whole family.

Absolutely the highest quality cheeses! I love their stuff!
Some of the recipes I picked up for the blue cheese when I bought some were first rate as well!

Excellent cheese! The blue cheese crumbles are amazing. They freeze well and allow for larger purchases. We also love the smoked baby swiss cheese. The farm is only a few miles off the highway and is easy to find using Google maps. The staff is friendly and helpful. We were able to have a brief tour of the packing area our last trip through. If you are a cheese lover this is worth the detour.

Would be helpful if you could actually talk with a person. Called 16 times! Cut off after 32 seconds every time. Unable to place orders to multiple addresses on website. Very frustrating. Would give 0 stars if I could for customer service. Cheese is still good.

I've been a Maytag Blue consumer for over 2 decades. Yesterday's order arrived in less than 24 hours, in perfect condition. We survived the unfortunate shortage a few years ago. Thrilled to have our good stuff back. We gave some of this to a Danish friend. Her reaction was great surprise that the US was producing Blue of this quality. "This is world-class cheese," was her comment. Keep it coming!

Went here to get cheese, the sign in front said they no longer sell cheese at the location and had to buy it at a wine store in town. Drove to the wine store and it was closed until 4:00pm. I drove almost 3 hours to visit this place, some website updates would have been helpful.
Expansive recreational area surrounded by parks, with hiking & biking trails, plus campsites.

My wife wanted to come here on Mother's Day for something to do, we hadn't been here before, it's about an 1.5 hour drive but well worth it. We walked around on various trails & enjoyed the beautiful scenery, it was pretty low at the time so we were walking around the area by the dam, we would like to come back with our bikes sometime.

Truly a fabulous facility for a race. Spent four days here for the Nationals and was a pretty cool atmosphere.
Just one note for people buying tickets: Section WW and Z are actually one big section. So if you are looking to buy tickets believing they are end seats between WW and Z, they are not end seats. Over the four days I was here I heard several people around me commenting that they believed they bought end seats. Still a great section, just make sure you are getting what you wanted.

Had a great time, watched the sprint car nationals. Beer is $5 a can, so it's not a terrible price.
Greg Paetz — Google review
This was only the 2nd dirt track I've ever been to, and it was SO MUCH NICER than the one I normally go to! We sat up top, and you still could feel the dirt flying (my favorite part of the sprint car experience), but it wasn't dusty like it is at the other track I've been to. Different types of dirt, and a lot more water. Seats were pretty nice as we're used to sitting on concrete or broken wood boards at the tracks we go to. These are metal bleachers with backs on them and each seat has a number. It wasn't full the night we went, so it didn't matter too much if we were actually in our seats or not. On nights when they are full, I'm sure it's a less enjoyable experience bc of how close those seats are supposed to be. It looked like only one concession stand was actually inside of the stadium, so you had to have your ticket to leave unless you just wanted beer. Make sure you have your ticket so they can scan you out and then back in. They don't do stamps like everywhere else I've been. A great place for family fun. We enjoyed it and will hopefully be back some day.

Great FamWe visited Knoxville Raceway for the SRX in June 2021. We got to parki at the track which was $10 for the event. We were able to pay an additional fee to enter the pits and meet Tony Stewart, Bill Elliot, Hailie Deegan, Michael Waltrip as well as several others. We could have stayed in the pits the entire night but decided to go to our seat in the stands. We sat in the middle of Section C. You could see the entire track and all the wrecks from our seats. This is a great dirt track and very fun to watch a race at. In my opinion this is a great value for the price. I would go back anytime. I do suggest bringing plenty of sunscreen as there really is no shade in the stands. I also suggest a cushion to sit on. There’s plenty of food and drinks to choose from. Great Family Fun Night!ily Fun Night!!

This wildlife refuge is amazing. We were able to see the bisons and elks roaming and eating. I recommend taking the kiddos. They will love the sceneries and the wildlife.
Go to muenchies in altoona grab froyo foe the kiddos, head to scooters in altoona foe the carmelicious blenders and take a drive to Neal Smith Wildlife Refuge.
The kiddos can enjoy their menchies , you can enjoy the delicious and satisfying drink from scooters and all can enjoy a nice quiet ride thru the winding road and enjoy the beautiful sceneries.

I wasn't able to drive on the trails as they were much too messy with the snow, but the visitor center is amazing!! Absolutely amazing staff, really cool exhibits, and completely wheelchair accessible throughout. I went this time to get my National Park Access Pass, but I will definitely be back again!

Worth a walk on any of the trails. Amazed by the variety of flowers and plants. Great views. No Buffalo in view today but saw a couple on way out of the park. Wish the property was open but it is open on a limited schedule. I did not find the limited schedule on the internet. Also with the facility would have better maintenance. Lots of little stuff that should be done seems to be piling up.

For about 20 years, we have seen the brown signs on the highway about this place. We finally stopped. We should have done it sooner. It was well worth the visit. This is a very nice, clean, professional, educational display of prairie life in Iowa . This would be good for any age, but especially school children. Very well done! The facilities are nice. They do have a gift shop.

The staff is very nice and very helpful! They are very smart about the Prairie and they Wildlife out there. They have trails to walk at different areas of Refuge. Nice learning center and a road that takes you to see the Bison and elk. You can volunteer out there to help collect seeds. Exhibits, a theater to show a brief movie and a gift shop. I enjoy it. You can go through the enclosure to see Bison and Elk.

Beautiful, quiet and a photographer's haven. Even if the visitor center isn't open, come see the wildlife and enjoy some quiet time. Great paved trails for those looking for a nice hike through the tall grass.
This is our third year of season passes and our first year trying out the brunch with Santa, along with the Winter Wonderland!
We love Center Grove so much. Always so much fun to be had, never a dull moment! Lots of activities to choose from for all ages. Our household favorites are all of the slides and, can’t forget about feeding the baby goats!
Sarah Rotert — Google review
The price is steep. Especially on the weekends, and even more so if you don't buy in advance. The extra convenience fee added to each ticket that I had to print myself was annoying and half the cost of another ticket.
There was a lot to look at, and it's easy to get your steps in for the day. You'll want to be there earlier in the day when they still have two tractors running otherwise you will be waiting twenty plus minutes for a very crowded ride.
The sunflower field is pretty, and the sight of so many beautiful blossoms smiling back at you as you pull up is very uplifting.
The large straw pyramid gives you a great view of the pumpkin patch and surrounding activities. It's a shame the train was still out of service.
The items in the store are definitely gift shop priced.
My 10 year old had fun and made a new friend, and my 17 year old enjoyed the day out with her boyfriend. It helped that I was able to leave an adult with the 10 year old at the kids activities, but that means I missed out on a romantic photo in the sunflowers with my husband. *sigh* better luck next year I guess.

Huge! More fun than we can handle! You can literally spend a whole day there. I like all the things for kids to do, they really did a great job there with so many different areas. Plus, it all looks well kept up, new, and inviting to visit. Not like some old run down places we've been to in Wisconsin. As if they give it All a fresh coat of paint every year. Definitely a place to recommend.

I took three of my kids to the Winter Wonderland and while it was a little too cold outside, my girls loved the royal treatment since we were the last ones there and the only ones there a bit before closing time. There were numerous photo opportunities along the story walk-through, hot cocoa available around half way, then lots of giant outdoor games like checkers, corn-hole, connect four and even a decent slide. Santa met us at a giant rocking chair for our final photo and kudos to the employees who helped me be in a few of the photos too! Definitely have to see the baby goats after the tunnel of lights, just make sure they don't try to eat your scarf, purse, or anything else they could reach!!
In Spite of the freezing cold, the girls really enjoyed themselves!

The amount of time they put in to this holiday light display was very apparent. It was beautiful. Tons of family photo moments. My daughter loved everything about it. Even my husband was blown away by the set up. Once done with the light portion you walk right into this giant fun zone. They also had a booth for hot chocolate which came with these adorable mugs. We tried the salted caramel and the red velvet hot chocolates. Both were delicious however that red velvet was out of this world. Then all the fun games the kids and even adults could play. After we hit up each “play station” we let the girls go on the slide for a good 15 min. Ended by walking through the barn with baby goats. Everything about this really put you in the Christmas mood. Cannot wait to go back if they do it again next year! 10/10 recommend.

Always such a fun time here with the kids! We didn’t get season passes last year so we could experience other orchards/pumpkin patches in the area. None compared and had as much to offer as Center Grove! We got the season pass again this year because it’s so worth it, especially with young kids, but it’s great for all ages! The corn pool is large and open with a nice breeze that comes inside. There are two jumping pillows for different age groups to enjoy, a giant slide, tractor ride, animals, the list goes on. There’s no where else I would rather go! Getting the Apple cider donuts at the end of your adventure is a must as well.

Poolside rooms are great. Pools are great. Rooms are good. We had a great stay. Only complaints are 1. No breakfast and 2. Bars card reader went down and they don't take cash so after waiting for a drink I could not pay for it. They did have the option to charge it to the room though 2 pools and an arcade this place is perfect for kids.
Alesha Lamb — Google review
Hotel staff was not very accommodating for our needs. Hotel card reader was down so we had to use separate payment for drinks and couldn't charge to our room. Room was clean and nice, but smelled strongly of chlorine since there was a gap underneath our room door by the pool. There was also an automatic nightlight right by our beds we couldn't turn off during the night, which was bothersome.
Pools were fun for the kids

The inn is nice because it's right next to the adventure land... But they have no shuttle to bring you over there anymore. And then the inside of the place is dirty. And the pools are ice cold. There were kids who refused to get in it was so cold. The room was right next to the west pool which is great. But again the pool is so cold you don't want to get in. The place is okay. But for how much they are I would just get a different hotel especially if they don't have the shuttle bus to take you over there! over all I would just get a good hotel for the same price more or less then stay here again. Before we left there housekeeping tried to just walk into our room three times. Not once did they announce that they were housekeeping. This was horrible! We have children with us. It was scary. For that I'm taking away that third Star.

Avoid Avoid AVOID!!! This place is disgusting. For the price you pay, you should expect and CLEAN, enjoyable stay. Our room was barely cleaned. Food from previous guests under the beds and in the corners. BUGS everywhere!!! We couldn’t even sit in the room in the condition to wait for another. Stains in the hallways. Dirty pool. The front desk couldn’t care less. They acted like they must hear it all the time. Instantly just offered 10% off, no sorry, no Let us make this up to you. We left. Run Away!!!!

I expected much more for $189 a night. The rooms were run down, poor plumbing, and very dark. The pools were good at too cold for my toddler and infants to enjoy. So many unsupervised kids running around screaming in the hallways at night. At the price I paid I expected a breakfast or offices something better to buy then what we had. Beds and pillows so uncomfortable I almost joined my toddler in his blow up bed.

I was hesitant to book here after reading some of the bad reviews. My experience here was wonderful. Yes, parts of the hotel are a little outdated but room was clean and updated, and the staff very friendly and helpful. Pools and hot tub were wonderful as well as their swim up bar. very good drinks/ drink menu and reasonably priced. Swim up bar is cashless. They have a great gift shop with anything and everything you can think of, (toiletries, gifts, food, etc.) As well as an awesome bar and grill connected. We didn't go to the amusement park however the casino is within walking distance so that was nice as well. Only complaint I'd have, especially if I brought kids with, is the life guards. They were fully clothed and on their phones. How would you save a drowning child with jeans and a Hoodie on? They wouldn't even know anyways because they never looked up from their phones

I booked a hotel here months in advance. We arrived at check in time 4pm and the room was not ready. We were told the room would be ready in 30 minutes. It was not. We waited almost 2 hrs before being able to get into the room. We had planned to have a birthday party at 5pm. I didn't receive a text until 8pm the room was ready. The lady at the front was very nice. Once getting into room it was okay we had a pool side room. It was really busy this weekend kids running through the halls and knocking on doors no supervision. It was a bit run down and no swim towels. We asked for extra but they didn't have any towels for 45ms. So of you stay bring your own towels!!! The bands for the pool are extremely expensive i wouldn't suggest having a party here.I don't think we will stay here again.

As a Peace officer in another state, I have never seen such behavior from on site staffed security guards of a hotel. I would never recommend this place to any family. The security guards are unprofessional, strange toward children, and have I no mental capacity for what security is actually needed for. Do yourself a favor and stay at any of the numerous hotels just a few minutes away.

Rooms are falling apart, the beds are very uncomfortable. As soon as you walk in and see the carpet you can tell the hotel is not clean. The pools were freezing cold and the swim up bar was mediocre. The location is great especially if you're going to the park though. The campground is probably more comfortable if you have a camper.

Room did not have a microwave or a hair dryer. It did have a fridge, that was a bonus. The swim up bar was not open, which was a bummer. They would have made a decent amount of $ as we stayed there during spring break, and it was packed. Hot tub was closed in the kiddie pool area.

I don’t do this much but I hope I can help someone out! We left at 9:45pm. We only live a half an hour away and there for our son’s birthday. Just stay at a reputable hotel with a pool and it will be better. The west pool was cold. All pools were over crowded and under guarded by lifeguards. Kids were disrespectful in all the pools. The one good thing I did see was a good lifeguard staff, however, due to lack of parental supervision (this was the case during the whole time we were there) had to due their job. One had to jump in 4 times within a 15 minute period, twice for the same kid. Once the pools closed (9:30) the unsupervised children began running the halls. Rooms were ok. The whole place needs updated especially for paying $189

We got a room with a ground floor balcony which was nice. Unfortunately the arcade closes at 9 so we had to wait for the morning to use and it would be helpful if in the rooms there had some kind of information or paperwork about the hotel the area/restaurants and closing times etc. for the facilities. Opening and closing times are all over the place and posted times don't match online posted hours. Kids enjoyed the pool but the lifeguard needs to stay OFF THEIR PHONES!!

I can't thank them enough! We stayed Tuesday - Wednesday for my daughter's birthday. By that evening we realized we left a tiny remote on top of the headboard. I thought maybe they missed it while cleaning so we stopped back Thursday and were taken to the room with management to check. Unfortunately the cleaning team did a spectacular job cleaning and found it. It hadn't made its way to lost and found yet so we left our name and number and by that evening I had a voicemail saying they found it! Awesome! So we made plans to swing back by on Sunday. Checking the mail this evening (Saturday) we received an unexpected package. Adventureland Inn overnighted our remote to us!!! This was way more than I expected them to do for a tiny lost/found item. I'm very impressed with the extra step and kindness. My daughter is over the moon as well. Thanks A-land Inn, we will be back. ❤️

You are right next to Adventureland, but the resort needs an update. The rooms are recently updated, but still pretty spartan.
When we arrived our rooms weren't ready at check-in but they did give us a meal voucher. There is no shuttle to the park anymore which stinks. You get a parking voucher but that's a lot of walking and parking when the benefit was not having to do that. There should be a preferred lot up close for people staying in the hotel.
The highlight is the 2 indoor pools - those are fun for the kids and there is a swim up bar for adults

First time there. I kept hearing good things so I splurged and got an Eastside balcony room. Room was nice but not cleaned too well. The pull out bed in the couch didn't work. The fridge kind of worked but the freezer part was ice build up. Wrappers on the balcony and stuff on the walls. The chlorine and humidity from the pool filled the room. Burned your eyes. We adjusted we went swimming. That was ok. Only 2 jets worked in the hot tub on the east pool area. Little bitty kids kept getting in it. The hours on the signage needs changed. Says 9:30 they told us all to leave at 9. The bar didn't open at the hours it says. There's no clock to look and see what time it is. The east pool was so humid and chlorine smell it hurt my lungs. The second night my nephew broke out in a chlorine rash and was having breathing problems. Got him some meds and a shower and he started getting better. But does it really need to be so humid and strong smelling? Staff were nice and the restaurant was good. I feel it's all too over priced. It could be because of staff issues that the place isn't cleaned enough. But they really need to figure something out for the chlorine. It had so many hallways kids could get lost or kidnapped easily.

The hallways were gross looking carpets and walls. Kids running up and down and banging on our room door. The east pool area was heated water but the air was really cold The west pool had much warmer air but no kiddie pool.
Breakfast would have been a nice addition but not offered.
Nichoelle DeBrouse — Google review
For the price we paid this was a huge let down. The upkeep of the building was dismal. The floors were truly disgusting to look at, stains and trash littered every hall. There was a slice of pizza on the bottom of the stairs for our entire stay. The breakfast ran out of everything with an hour and an half left of breakfast and the attendants just kept leaving saying they’ll try to bring something. The people at the desk were very friendly, but the state of the rooms and halls themselves were far below expectation. The room had stains on the walls. A dust bunny fell from the fan in the bathroom onto my face. The walls and ceiling were cracked and my so. Cut his foot on the flooring coming up in the bathroom. Seriously disappointed.and the lifeguard were wearing clothes. Nothing to indicate they were prepared to get into the water to help anyone.
Jennifer Sharkey — Google review
For the room price, it’s okay. The pools are on bad shape, disgusting and under kept. Two of the kids we had sliced their foot open on something in one of the pools (another reason we didn’t swim long). One of the jacuzzi’s was down. The room with the kid pool was FREEZING. We stayed in the other pool room but all in all only swam for about two hours. We went during spring break in hopes that they would have the swim bar open (considering they had spring break packages) but it was closed.
While we was in the pool, I noticed a “lifeguard” get down off her post, walk around to the stairs (all while not speaking a word or whistling or trying to get anyone’s attention) and by then I was scanning the pool to notice a little girl bobbing up and down trying not to drown because she was in too deep of water. I began to holler to the parents in the area that there was a child who couldn’t reach and thankfully the parent was able to reach the child. I’m not sure what the point of the lifeguards are if they are not going to do their job and alert those around them or even attempt to help the child.
Another huge turn off was that I opted to pay for my room when I arrived. When I got there the front desk staff told me that the card on file had already been charged. I asked why, considering it wasn’t my card on file, he said it was their policy. That is not the policy that I read when I booked the room. It said that I would be paying at the site upon arrival.

My family booked 4 rooms for a winter getaway. This was our first time there. Here are my impressions: the hall carpets look like crime scenes with stains everywhere; there are no microwaves available except all the way down in their store; the whole facility is in dire need of a face lift/fresh coat of paint. I can overlook the things I just mentioned, but the one thing I can NOT overlook is the lack of attention paid by the lifeguards. I took my grandchildren to the "kiddy pool" (once it opened.... it had been closed since someone fell and got hurt there right before we arrived). The lifeguard on duty did not look up at the kids in the water even one time. Seriously, not once. He was so involved in stripping the covering off his lifesaving buoy and putting it back on that watching his charges couldn't be done. I approached him at the end of his shift and mentioned my concern to him, but he didn't care. The front desk didn't care. I asked the manager to call me and never got a call. Warning: Swim at your own risk. Kids should not be left unattended at their pool!!!! To top it off, the hot tubs' jets weren't working either. 🤔 Overall, it was a disappointing experience, and it's one we likely won't return to.

This place was NASTY! We went for the “water park” which it may have been at one time, but the slides and everything have been taken out so it is just two pools. We were in the pool for all of ten minutes until we pivoted and tried to find anything else to do in the are. The pools have not been cleaned in ages as the entire thing was rimmed with grime. Very run down rooms… feels slightly unsafe. I feel bad leaving such a bad review but wow this place is good awful. Do not go! Literally any other hotel with a pool will be a better choice.
Rebekah Brown — Google review
This place is in dire need of some TLC. The rooms have open bolts showing on the floors and holes in the ceiling. They are not nearly as large or arranged anything like the websites show. The hallways look like they are never vacuumed or cleaned. It was sooo LOUD until after midnight! My family really enjoyed the pool area and the lifeguards were staffed and attentive, but there was only one bartender at the swim up bar for a very crowded place who seemed to be very overwhelmed and took hourly breaks. We waited a hour for check in and were not given any details about pool times or breakfast, and the QRL codes everywhere in the room only attached to a survey, nothing else. For the price we paid, I would anticipate pampered amenities. Instead, it all had the feel of a 1970s Motel 6. Would not recommend and we won’t be back
The Iowa State Fairgrounds is a large, open-air venue that hosts many events throughout the year. It's one of the oldest state fairs in the country and is known for its agricultural displays, carnival rides and competitions.
I made a point of going by myself so I wasn't slowed down by anyone else. There's so much to see and hear and taste. I had a blast. Got to pet horses, ride in tractors, eat root beer floats, buy t-shirts. I love the fair. I can't wait for next year. It's the best!

This place is HUGE and worth the trip! There is a reason why it’s on the top things to do before you die. Every kind of food - every kind of vendor - every kind of farm animal and so much of it is unique. The Ye Old Mill and the Sky Glider are petty cool. Plus the butter cow is a classic that is worth the wait. It’s one of a kind and just a piece of state fair history.

It was a awesome place to have the car show and they was able to get alot in there with having the indoor swop meet and other places to see will definitely try and be back next year.

World class entertainment. Wonderful returning and new fair foods. Awesome fireworks show after every grandstand concert. Great free educational and interesting activities for all.
What I wish the fair would do is add lines in the grandstands for water. People who want to purchase water shouldn't have to wait in mile long, beer lines just to buy water, especially when the heat index is 105°.

This is probably one of best state fair in the country. Great place to be. Lots of fun activities to do with your family. Lots of food trucks . Parking get filled quickly. You should avoid weekends if you can.

Best event in Iowa! We go every year! Baby animals are our favorite part of every visit! During our visit, the Iowa State parade showed up and surprised us with an amazing show! In the kids forest we watched a talent show that was hilarious! We couldn't find the giant slide but overall the experience was more than worth it!

Iowa State Fair!! First time visitor after living in the state for more than 20yrs. Boy have I been missing a great experience! We enjoyed the Bill Reilly talent search, the fantastic displays and the livestock exhibits. Horse and cattle shows are such an interesting thing. Fair food was super great though my diet was mercilessly destroyed ! Highly recommended!!

Great place for some family fun. So much to do I would recommend 2 days or more. 1st day of the fair is slightly less busy and great day to start. Place is clean and lots of staff or volunteers that were willing to help. Map was great to let you know what the schedule of activities were and how to get around. Bring lots of money as food is 8+ dollars on average per item. Water ran 3$ a bottle.

So thankful to have the fair back this year! I happily go every year. No matter the weather, it's an awesome event.
I take my time and see everything. Go through every building and barn. Ride some rides. Try some different foods. Get my face painted. Listen to live music. Learn something during a show. Watch a parade. Buy a trinket or do a personality test. Play games in the midway. Watch a talent show. Taste some wine or beer. Look at farm machinery. Hold a snake. Sometimes enjoy a concert or 2. Ride a tractor trolly. Collect some freebies at various vendors. Do a portrait. Watch a cooking demonstration.
It's amazing to see families and groups of every religion, size, age, shape, and color all having a good time at a common event. Makes my heart full. Here's to another 100 years of State Fair!

My first experience at the Iowa State Fair. So glad we were able to go! Very crowded, of course, but no particularly long lines which was nice. Surprised to learn that additional tickets were needed for the house show, but it is what it is. Enjoyed the butter cow and seeing the grand champions!

Born and raised in Iowa moved around as military wife around US and currently a truckers wife of 18 years that's been to 47 of the lower 48 and nothing compares to Iowa state Fair.
I'm now grandma and love passing down the traditions of spending our last few days of summer before school starts showing the Iowa love to them.
It definitely has had a lot of changes and changes are hard but it seriously is worth spending at least 1 full day if not all 11 days enjoying Iowa Pride.
My oldest grands are aging out of kids activities like little hands on the farm and little kid stuff but we had an amazing day doing things people of all ages do.
We have a large family and usually have at least one family or friend involved in the events somehow. This year we had my uncle enter a pumpkin and a cousin that won lots of ribbons with her sheep.
Even if you don't know someone going in you will make a new friend before you leave.

Nice and neat and well organized! Lots of convenient parking. Enjoyed the tram ride over the fairgrounds, a relaxing way to take it all in. Pecan pie with bacon on a stick, corn dog, pork chop on a stick, root beer float and tasty daiquiri. 😋
Cindy Bradske — Google review
Great time at the fair this year! We rode some rides (some smaller rides near the Craft Beer Tent and some bigger rides near the Barksdale cookie stand), ate lots of food (be sure to try a Crescenti) and went to a couple of concerts (the fireworks were great). This is the best state fair in the US!
Katie Hall — Google review
It’s a LOT. With all of the different exhibits and shows, if you want to see/do everything you’ll need multiple days. OR you can hit the main highlights in 1 day if you keep it at a full sprint and skip most of the entertainment. But why even bother going then.
Parking is always a concern for people. There is a city ran shuttle that’s cheap if you park at other places like the capital. You can pay for parking close by. We chose to park on the street a mile or so away and just make the walk.
Traffic can be terrible on the main roads at different times of the day (Eg. Before a concert). If you see that, don’t be afraid to get off the main highway and drive through the neighborhoods to wind your way there.

I'm not normally a fair goer, but my job brought me to Des Moines, and it's the Iowa State Fair!!!
First, parking was accessible, affordable. Second, the entry $ was about average.
Third- the fairgrounds is MASSIVE! I was blown away. The midway just kept going and going!!
I haven't been to a state fair in several years. I like to eat fair food, and go check out the animals, and people watch. This fair did not disappoint!!
Well done, Iowa!

Grandstand was bigger than I thought. Neat looking building. There are a few mega TV's which was helpful during the concert. The fair was large but fun. There are a ton of different vendors available. The rides are fun and you get point cards at kiosks you use for rides and games. They can be reloaded with points and used over and over again. I found that it was easier to take a Uber or Lyft and leave the car at the hotel. Lyft going there and Uber to go home worked best. Fun time!
Spacious campground, boat rentals, fishing, sandy beach & trails featured in a 770-acre preserve.
We really enjoyed our stay here. The park was clean and well maintained. The restrooms and showers were clearly well taken care of. They have some walking trails that were also great. Most of the sites were electric only, with water spigots sprinkled throughout, but there are also full hook-up sites. For electric only, it was $20 a night. But, if you try to book starting on a Saturday, you have to book the Friday before, or it won't let you. If you have T-mobile, the service is very spotty at best. But, overall, not a bad place to stay. We'd stay here again.

Would give it 5 stars if it was mown better. Having said that, I know the budget constraints keep them from maintaining like the "old days". It's still a wonderful place to spend time.

Pretty nice state park that features hiking trails and a lake. The lake was nearly dry and there were workers in there so I have not seen the park at its prettiest, but still a good place to hike and have a picnic.

Campground reopened today. Many, but not all full hookups. Only ADA and host site are concrete - rest gravel. Playground seems gone. Not overly impressed but a few sites nice.

Absolutely gorgeous. The restrooms were pretty clean for a park like this, but smelled a little mildewy. The showers got kind of dirty over the weekend with so many visitors (gorgeous May weather, who can resist?) and because of the mildew smell I decided against using the showers. But if you're prepared for that, the lake, scenery, and walking trails are great. Very relaxing. Listening to the birds and frogs in the morning was awesome.

If you discount the bleak weather, Ahquabi State Park is one of the better state parks. Plenty of campgrounds and RV hookups. Fishing, swimming, paddle boats, canoes, and kayaks are available for use...or bring your own. Always check with park officials first to make sure spots and hookups are available. There is no entry fee, but you will be charged for camp space, RV hookups and boat rentals. Great place for the day or a weekend out of town.

Boat rentals! Paddle boats, row boats, and canoes. There are not enough tables but plenty of shade. A nice log work encloser thats usually rented or filled. A nice concessions stand thats cheap. A couple mowed trails that are steep. A small beach. Great picknick place and fishing. Oh flushing toilets. All the people are nice and its very clean.
Rodney Gates — Google review
It's a nice place but they really did a number on the campground. Now, it resembles more of a parking lot than a campground...kind of like that song that goes:
"They paved paradise and put up a parking lot".
Most of the trees and grass are gone, with giant slabs of concrete in their place. The campsites are nice, though, with brand new fire pits and grills.
You used to be able to go tent camping here for $11 a night, but now there is a flat fee of $20 + $4 to process your credit or debit card. I might have missed it, but I didn't see an option to pay in cash like before.
I really wish they would have left this place alone, because it really was a beautiful campground, but not so much anymore. Thankfully, you still have the lake there and hiking trails, so there is still some natural beauty there that wasn't destroyed...by the Department of Natural Resources or whoever's idea it was to renovate the campground.

The Iowa State Capitol building is a beautiful, ornate structure that is home to many different government offices. The dome of the building is especially impressive and can be seen from many different angles across Des Moines. There are regular tours available here that allow visitors to learn more about the history of the building as well as the state of Iowa.
We have visited other state capitol buildings and this one is very unique with the gold center dome and 4 green domes on the 4 corners of the building. Neat statues are found surrounding the property. You can enter the building and explore the art and architecture inside and out. The interior is pretty amazing too.

We visited here from Louisiana and this tour was the best! We learned so much about Iowa's history from the hour tour of the capital building and loved every minute of it. My youngest daughter and I went back a 2nd time on a different day simply to see it once again since it was so neat the first time after we took the tour and learned about the building. The 2nd time we wondered alone and took our own time to view and take pictures of things. We went all the way to the top. On the tour we climbed all the stairs and I realized how out of shape I was on the way up since I had to stop a rest halfway up the stairs going to the top of the tower. The library was one of our favorite rooms but the entire building was so rich with history. If you have the opportunity to check out this place out, don't skip it, it's a must see in my opinion and a great free tour! The gift shop was small but was one of the best in town and we got almost all of our souvenirs for our family back home there. I swear I bought the cutest Keychain in all of Des Moines here too!

This is one of the coolest capitals I have ever been to! They give free tours, and everyone here is so nice and so helpful and seem like they really love being there!
I wasn’t able to see the outside part because it was winter when I went. But I definitely wanna go back during the summer to see all the exhibitions and statues outside of the capital. The dome is really cool it’s made out of gold, and you can also walk up these really cool winding stairs to pretty much the top. But make sure you go on a free tour, otherwise you don’t get to go into certain rooms without a tour guide . You get to see the house of representatives and the senators of Iowa rooms. The library is so cool! It reminds me of Harry Potter, and Belle from beauty and the beast. The winding staircases and the way it’s all set up is one of the coolest things here. Art on the wall is really nice too and part of it looks like art but its really glass tile! So cool!
This is definitely the number one thing to do in Des Moines and you shouldn’t miss it.

Wow, another place that really is as good as the reviews say. The 4.8 star rating is totally justified. The free tour is amazing. They give a 90 minute tour of most of the building including the old high court room, the parliamentary room, law library and right up to the top of inside the dome, the accurately-named Whispering Floor. The guide was really friendly and answered everyone's strange and obscure questions.
The restrooms are clean and tidy and the gift shop is actually well-priced!!

The Downtown Farmers' Market in Des Moines is a great place to find local produce, bread, and baked goods. It's a colorful and chaotic affair that attracts huge crowds every Saturday morning from the start of May through to the end of October.
Love it. I look forward to being in town on Saturdays. So much good food, fresh produce. Such a variety of goods to look at. Great way to start the day.

This is probably the best farmers market in the whole country. It’s huge and there are over 200 vendors, a mix of bakeries, treats, food vendors, veggies.
Samples galore- the jam booth and the kimchi booth are worth mentioning. They’re both delicious.

Super fun spot showcasing a big variety of local businesses and vendors. You can find local produce, baked goods, coffee, boba tea, fresh lemonade, ethnic foods, jewelry, clothing, and so much more. Prices are fair and some vendors accept card, but it’s a good idea to bring cash for the businesses that don’t. It can get crowded, especially after 10am, but you can still get around with no problem.

I love the Farmers Market here. It's a great place for families with slightly older children who can handle crowds and queues who like trying different food and for those just looking to support their local farmers and businesses. The sheer variety of food stalls and other handmade items is really inspiring and the prices are reasonable. On my last visit I bought Pork Dumplings, Kettlecorn, A grilled cheese with sweet lemonade, a tea drink, and locally produced cheddar cheese curds all of which were delicious. It made for a very fun day out.

14-acre park featuring seasonal flowerbeds, a butterfly exhibit, sculptures, tours, lectures & more.
Absolutely worth the visit. Gorgeous grounds with a wonderful variety. I believe they also have various plants that mature throughout the seasons so there is always something new. Great places to sit and relax if you want to spend more time or simply walk through their pathways. I appreciated that everything was labeled so I could learn what they had going on. They even have a great butterfly garden

This was a nice place to visit though it would be more interesting later in the year when more plants are on display. Still a very pleasant walk with some interesting sculptures and a large garden gnome. The butterfly exhibit was phenomenal. Free parking is available in the University lot across the street from the gardens. They are sometimes open late so always check for the closing time. The evening we were there they closed at 8:00 p.m. rather than at 4:30 p.m.

This is more than worth the trip!! Everything from the butterflies to the flowers is perfect here. The best botanical garden I've ever been to!
Gabrielle Pray — Google review
I make it a point to visit botanical centers big or small whenever I'm visiting an area. My boyfriend decided to bring me here for a date. Although expected to be somewhat limited, it still fell short of my expectations. He paid $24 for both of us which I found to be quite steep considering the lack of activity/stimulation.
The butterfly garden is beautiful as everyone has said. The rest of the gardens are not really worth the admission price. The plants in the conservatory are well-maintained though not so varied. Just the same plants over and over again. I feel like I saw tri-color stromanthes everywhere. I really value places that can showcase their ability to care for a variety of flora. Iowa is not limited to the plants they displayed, especially in a greenhouse.
The outside gardens are pretty dead considering the season. It was warm out but not worth walking around. Other than that, there was a banquet room, a gift shop, and a display showing the different stages of metamorphosis a butterfly/moth goes through. I do appreciate how serious they are about the safety of the butterflies. Brownie points for that.

We went here for a staff appreciation week at Iowa State. We saw the butterfly exhibit and it was so nice and peaceful in there. Dozens and dozens of butterfly's flying around you. We also went to the tropical side with all the palm trees and desert plants, had a great time. We got some goodies at their two gift shops as well. I recommend seeing the whole thing (outside) but the weather was a little too cold and windy for us to venture out. Very nice.

My favorite was the butterfly garden. My 8 year old nephew liked the chimes. Everything was great though.
Nice, helpful staff throughout the gardens. Also clean restrooms, cement pathways, book exchange, bridges, giant gnome, and more. There were scooters availability for anyone that needed them.
Now back to the butterflies! Seriously amazing. I could have sat in there for hours. All different sizes and colors. Fly right by you.
Easy to find and very reasonable cost. Adults $12, kids $6, breaks for seniors and veterans. Plenty of parking available.

This is one of my favorite places in Ames! The Christmas lights in December are magical, my pictures don't do it justice. My 3 year old kept saying "This is so fun" over and over. They even had a boy scout troop selling hot cocoa and cookies, it felt like I was in a Christmas hallmark movie. Make sure to buy the tickets online before going and before entering there is a stand to the right that sells led flowers for $2, so, so cute!
For the rest of the year (or going during the day), the exhibits are creative and fun and the butterfly garden is like entering a fairy garden. My kids really enjoy it too (3, 8 and 11), they get to explore and enjoy being outside. I like to bring snacks so we can stop at different times and enjoy the views. It is a nice way to walk and change up the day.

This garden is beautiful with such a variety of plants, exhibits including Elwood (the largest concrete garden gnome) and metal sculptures. There is plenty of parking and a 2,500 sq ft butterfly exhibit with over 800 exotic butterflies. If your in the area I recommend to check this out.

What a great day! Highly recommend visiting the butterfly house and walking around the outside gardens—gorgeous! We had a couple kids and a couple babies in our group and they had a great time as well running around and checking out the kids area outside! We walked the path and man were the plants and water areas beautiful. Definitely worth your time.

Reiman Gardens has a very special place in my heart. When I was young my grandma would take me here and in 2020 it’s where my husband and I were united in marriage. It’s also somewhere I love to take others to photograph their special moments in life. We’ve had friends host their baby shower there, other friends have their wedding there, and it’s always a place we enjoy taking our family.
The staff have always been exceptionally accommodating and I love all the events they offer. Most recently I enjoyed their Winter Wonderscape Holiday Light Show in December. I love how they change their gardens with what’s in season so every time you go it’s a completely new experience.
I highly recommend picking a nice day and going and enjoying nature there. They work extremely hard to make it so beautiful and our community is lucky to have this treasure.

A fantastic garden and butterfly room. Well manicured gardens with scenic walkways that tie it all together. The staff was polite and welcoming. I would recommend stopping by and relaxing for a few hours.

Rieman Garde💐 is located at 1407 University Blvd., right next to Jack Trice Stadium in Ames. It's a great place for relaxing family fun, and this place would make for a great first date. They have a refreshment area to sit, sip, and nibble on snacks. They also have some items for sale as souvenirs, but they can be pricey. An inside butterfly 🦋 garden is a favorite for many people. Programs and classes are available as well. The gardens themselves are beautiful. Trails and paths wind through the entire park, inviting you into a wonderland type environment. There always seems to be something going on, either a theme or a featured sculpture; things like that. During the winter, of course, it can be very slow. Right now, however, there's something very special going on: Winter Wonderscape!❄️ It's a magical display of colors and lights🌟 that are simply amazing. If you can walk the entire grounds, you will find awe-inspiring displays throughout. Put on your coat, hat, and gloves, then go explore the sights. The cold, fresh air will leave you refreshed, relaxed, and ready for a cup of hot chocolate!🍵 You are welcome to bring your own stroller, wheelchair, or motorized personal mobility scooter. Please visit their website and read "More Info & Tickets" section. There's plenty of free parking right on site. Due to the price of the tickets, I am only giving this a three star rating. If you can afford it, it will provide you with a five star experience.

We went to the butterfly exhibit during the day and then came back for Spirits in the Garden the same night.
We have visited many butterfly exhibits over the years. The butterfly exhibit was nice and impressive considering it's in Iowa where the temps get frigid.
Spirits in the Garden is unlike anything I've ever seen before. There are thousands of carved pumpkins lit up. Since my son attends ISU I got the inside scoop that volunteers draw the images one week, gut the pumpkins the following week, and the week it opens carve the pumpkins. Some of the fun is trying to figure out who or what is on the pumpkins. Everything from Cookie Monster to Frankenstein, Spock to Tinkerbell and so very many more! It's a family friendly event too. Many kids and not scary at all. I look forward to visiting again in the future!

This is a great place to visit in Ames. They decorate for all of the holidays, so it is fun to visit multiple times a year. My family recently visited for the winter holiday lights and everyone across multiple generations had a great time. The outdoor area is large and all of the walkways were lit with different themes of lights.

Reiman Gardens did an outstanding job coordinating Spirit in the Gardens! We loved it and enjoyed the amazing talent of pumpkin carving artists. We booked tickets in advance and entered during our assigned time with no wait. An extensive FAQ was included in the email with the ticket reminder and that was very helpful. The only recommendation I would make is there was no staff attending the pumpkins along the path. Unfortunately some unruly kids were running around the electrical cords and unplugged some of the lights (no parents to be found!). It might be helpful to have some staff members scattered in the area to help re-plug lights etc. Not sure what you can do about bad parenting. Great job carvers!

I love these gardens — I’m a bit biased as an ISU alum who got married there (excellent event planning staff if you’re interested). You do have to time your visits seasonally since the vast majority of it is outdoors, but the butterfly room and tropical plant room are inside. There’s never anyone there (most ISU students don’t know about it, which is a shame given the free admission). It’s a great community resource. In addition to the educational aspect, they offer children’s events, and donate some of the food the horticulture students grow in their test plots.
The grounds are gorgeous during the fall and late spring/summer months. There’s sculptures throughout and plenty of quiet spaces to get lost in.
Blank Park Zoo is a year-round attraction with a wide range of animals from across the globe. It is one of the only accredited zoos in the state and offers plenty for visitors, including carousel, petting areas, and concessions.
Went to the zoo on a Sunday afternoon with my daughter in law. Had the place to ourselves. literally. It was the actual best zoo experience I have ever had. the tiger was epic. She came up to the viewing window. But the real winner of the day was the otter. We called him Gary. That little nugget was showing off and being sassy and flashy for our viewing pleasure. He came as close to us as possible and would look right at us, Than cavort around his pen. He was the best part of my trip.
I wasn't sure if the zoo was Even open in the winter. It is. Some exhibits (like all of the africa exhibit and the kids zone) are shut down, for obvious reasons. Less people though, and it's not scorching hot.
Love the zoo!

Went on a Tuesday, and not crowded at all. Easy to park, enter and get around. Could see it perfect for strollers or even wheelchairs. Great for toddlers, and younger children. We enjoyed seeing the giraffes and lions most of all.
Staff was very friendly in the gift shop and as we excited.
Very clean park overall. From the restrooms to the walking paths.

We decided to go to the Wild lights. It was amazing and beautiful. It is $25 per person and it worth the money! You can see how much they put in the work to bring this together. It great family and friends, even date night. It give off very warm and romantic scenery.

very affordable entrance fee. and my kids loved the animals.we went here sunday morning and we got the whole zoo for ourselves. i think its best to go here during summer time because the giraffes and other part of the zoo are not available during winter time.

This is a nice little zoo that you can easily take in over the course of a couple hours. We went in when it opened, saw pretty much everything, ate a picnic lunch outside the zoo, and then went back in for the sea lion show before ending our time there. The zoo keeper woman we talked to after the sea lion show was excited to answer our questions and a joy to talk to.
We didn't do everything there is to do (feed the giraffes, play on the playground, ride the train), so you could do more than we did and easily stay longer (and spend more money).
It's certainly worth a trip, especially if you are either in the area or live nearby.

Fun place to take your family or your grandkids for an afternoon of visiting the animals. Park is spread out and, for the most part, was not crowded. Enjoyed watching the giraffes wander about and watching the various sea creatures frolic in the tanks located throughout the park. My only disappointment was the train ride. I would have enjoyed seeing the whole park via the train so you could see what they had before heading around the park. Instead, it was a quick ride through just 1 section. Lots to see, so wear your walking shoes and enjoy the fun!

Blank Park Zoo is a very nice zoo located in Des Moines, Iowa. The zoo is not huge, bug has a lot to offer and see. Adult admission is $16, and children were $10. Basic membership was $99 and may be the best value for a family. Train and Merry-Go-Round rides are $3. The zoo is easy walking, with a lot of shade. Restrooms were very clean and modern. We will definitely be back again.

I'm thoroughly impressed with this zoo. First time visiting despite multiple times in the city, and it starts off with camels in the parking lot and a cool inside walk through the water cycle and the animals that live in it. Plenty of other cool animals about and a cafe that isn't crazy priced. Wish there were more bottle filling stations around for water but that's my only complaint

Watching the Otters and Red Pandas is worth a visit by themselves. It's a very walkable zoo and great for young children. Plan on 2-3 hours minimum and add an hour if you're there for the seal show or penguin feedings.
Cordell Wabeke — Google review
Great little zoo! Had so much fun!! Had lion's and tiger's and no bears O'my. 🤣😂 The Red Pandas are so cute! While we visited most of the attractions like the train, and the play yard with the goats and lamas were closed , along as the food stands and bird feeding in the Australian exhibit, due to lack of staff. All the animal exhibits were open and the staff that was there and walking through the zoo were extremely friendly and willing to answer any questions you had. Lots of animals to see, with head sets for certain areas to learn more about them. There is a small picnic area in the parking lot and a small playground for the little ones to play. Over all was an amazing day even in the heat of the day. The prices are very reasonable. And I forgot to mention the zoo has sensory days on Tuesday's and Thursday's. If you haven't been there yet you're missing out on a great day. Perfect for a date day or a place to bring the family.

I love going to the Light the night events every year. I have been there the last two years and each year has had some amazing scenes set up. I love the ones that are on the water or that the kids can interact with. Each year they pick different themes and set up displays all over the zoo. We actually walk the zoo twice. We arrive a little before sunset and get the sunset view. Then we walk again to see the displays in the dark. Also the second walk is a lot quieter as most of the kids have gone home.
The animals are not out during this event so it is good for kiddos to know in advance. Parking is the same as always you might get lucky and get something close but you'll probably end up in the gravel lot and walk a little.
Tickets are a tad on the expensive side especially for a family but tbh not much different than going to a movie. On the plus side it's a memory to share with someone and something different to do.

Not a very big zoo but great for kid and people that mobility issues. Not many choices for food but the but they had lots of places to sit and cool off. You cold also feed some of the more friendly animals like Alpacas, Giraffes, and more that I can't remember. We were there for a little more then 3 hours so for 20$ it was a nice day out with the family. 👨🦼👨👩👧👦

Lots is extra, so be prepared to spend more money than the entrance fee. Train, feed parakeets, carousel, face painting, feed the goats. A lot is closed or being renovated currently, but the stuff that was open was fun! The animals were sleeping, (we went in the afternoon) but close enough to still see. Fun playground that my kids loved. We did it all within an hour or two, because it's pretty small.

Blank Park Zoo is a small but very nice zoo. Their animals are well cared for and well enriched, and the exhibits are engaging and very natural. Staff are friendly and have a wealth of information. The exhibits could have benefited from a little bit more written information but I'm also a glutton for knowledge so the average person won't be disappointed. They have a good variety of animals separated out into geographic regions as well as a train ride and an interactive animal section for kids.
Suzanne Harris — Google review
Another neat attraction in Des Moines that's worth a visit. We liked the interactive nature of many parts of the zoo. Even though we visited early in the season and a few things weren't ready/out yet it was still worth the trip.
Dan Braun — Google review
We're members here which is nice because we can show up whenever and stay as long or as little. It's totally worth the cost. They also have reciprocal benefits for other zoos around the US which will save you lots of money.
We really enjoyed Zoo Brew here on Wednesdays and came religiously until my work schedule changed. Sunday, was the first time we visited during normal zoo hours and it was cool to see which animals were more active vs. when we came in the evenings.
We decided to go Sunday, on STEM day, because two of the female lions are moving to a different zoo this week. There were a lot of information stations throughout and lots of interactive activities.
I do like this zoo, though it's a lot smaller than what I'm used to. I still think it's great what they have been able to do with this amount of space. I also feel like you can get reasonably close to the animals. There's plenty of rest/bathroom facilities. And, the train is fun whenever you want to take a break from walking. You get a different view of the animals and I believe it costs $2-$4 depending on whether or not you're a member.
Don't forget to go into the exhibit in the entrance building. A lot of people miss that and there's a bunch of cool exhibits in there. The waterfall in the Discovery Center is really beautiful.

Looking at this zoo from an aerial view, I didn’t expect there to be much at first. However, when I visited this zoo in person, I was awestruck at the diversity of animals on display within just a few acres! Every part of the zoo had some amazing creatures to marvel at, of which my favorites were the Red Panda, the Jamaican Fruit Bats, and the Cassowaries.

We don't have a lot of options for animal experiences in central Iowa. With that in mind, we love having an option that is not a terribly far drive from home. It is NOT a large zoo. When my child was younger, we had a pass & visited at least once a month, would usually take ~hour. It's been a few years, there have not been any "new" species that as a non-religious zoo follower would notice, takes us about 30 minutes.
That said, the kids' play area is fantastic. The animals we love are consistently on exhibit, always clean & well maintained. We love when the keepers are out to speak more about them, very informative, and helps to build that familiarity and compassion for the animals that call our zoo home.

We enjoyed a great afternoon at the Blank Park Zoo! The zoo had a wide verity of animals from turtles and fish to lions and giraffes and monkeys. It’s a good size but not a huge zoo by comparison to others. We took about two and a half hours to see what we wanted to see. It worked out perfect for us as that was about the little ones attention span anyway. There was plenty of parking and checkin was quick and easy. The ticket price felt a little high but overall wouldn’t deter us from coming back again.

Great zoo for the size! Prices were really good for entry! Took us about 3 hours to get through at a decent pace. Has many beautiful animals and the habitats are also amazing and the animals look happy and healthy! The sea lions are absolutely fun to watch! And the gift shop has many cool items. Got my son a shark bracelet that links to an actual tagged hammer head shark and shows GPS time lines of all the sharks travel, tag date, activities and ect. Really fun trip for family or even just as a couple or single.

If you’re debating where to go to college, consider going to Iowa State University. Was my college education the greatest of all time? Maybe. I’m not sure. Out of the two colleges I went to it was by far the best. Also, they have a lot of mirrors around campus to take selfies in, so do that, upload to the ‘gram and #enjoyyouradventure

Every fall, I am reminded as to why Iowa State University is ranked as one of the most beautiful campus in the country. All the fall foliage makes me want to keep snapping photos like an incoming freshman visiting the campus for the first time. Some of the best locations for looking at fall colors are: 1) around the campanile, 2) central campus (near Pearson Hall), and 3) along Osborn Dr. If you want to avoid getting judged by others for taking pictures, there are plenty of photo opportunities at Reiman Gardens. However, be sure to take those photos quickly as peak fall colors only lasts for about a week.

To all high school seniors looking at colleges, tour Iowa State! Iowa State was pretty low on my college list but I decided to tour it anyway. Coming from Wisconsin, my first thoughts were it was a college in the middle of no where with an easy acceptance rate...sketchy. But the moment I stepped foot on campus for my college visit I knew it was the place for me. It's a division one school but the beautiful campus and friendly staff made it feel small. Iowa State was the only college I applied to and I am more than happy with that decision. The professors and advisors truly care for every student and want you to succeed. For the university being in a such a small town, there is so much to do at ISU. From intramural sports, clubs, going to sporting events, joining greek life, exploring Ames, there is so much to do. Go cyclones.

I had a wonderful adventure during my undergrad as a Civil Engineering student. I graduated in 2015 and feel that the CCEE department did a great job of preparing students for the work force. Although, I thought many of the general education engineering classes were too large. An added plus was the beautiful campus, along with how easy it is to walk around.

I cannot say how much that I love Iowa State University. The professors have all been incredible and are extremely smart, compassionate people. Awesome park for people to enjoy some cool sculptures. Free admission, street parking all around the park for a small fee. The park is not very big but well maintained by the city. Some people complained in the reviews that all the sculptures are metals and plastics. It kinda has to be because the sculptures are outdoor and the materials has to be able to withstand the test of time. All the sculptures looks pretty new and it’s free to enjoy. The only thing that did bothered me was the amounts of homeless people walking and hanging around the park. I was alone at 9:30am and didn’t feel safe. When I got closed to the girl sculpture by one corner of the park; one homeless guy was yelling “it wasn’t me” repeatedly to me. I was a bit freaked out because there wasn’t anyone else close by at the moment. There was a few people on the other side of the park and some passing by cars though. Overall, I did enjoyed my visit at the sculpture park. I would highly recommend not going there alone if you are a woman.
