Buffalo Gap Historic Village
Museum
History museum
Historic frontier-town complex of buildings from the 1880s to 1920s with an art gallery & gift shop.
Historical village is a must see. I personally met a Baptist Minister whose Father and Grandfather gave their very first sermon in this very church. This info in this village is far greater than many historical sites we have visited across the globe. Seriously. Although it is self-guided, it has more info at hand than any tour guide has ever given us.

We really enjoyed this stop! We have ancestors who were part of the founding of Buffalo Gap,TX, so this was so neat to see and take the kids to!
A lot of neat history, I love that things are not barred off so children do get a full experience (parents be responsible!)
Only thing I would say a bit negative, it was extremely dusty, spider webs, mice droppings... things could be kept up a lot better.
J. August — Google review
We all like seeing history preserved so it was a perfect idea to visit.
Harold Manson — Google review
I love history that you don’t learn in school and seeing things from the past. We stopped here and enjoyed looking back at the some of the historical buildings that they preserved here in this walking museum. Leaned some fun facts as well!
Jewell Folsom — Google review
It looks like a real interesting place but was closed when I arrived on Christmas Eve. I hope to make it back some day to see all the buildings and walk the grounds.
danwoodcock — Google review
Felt like this place has not been very well kept it is a very interesting village and i am shure if i had visited 30 years ago it would have been amazing but i didnt feel it was worth the price of admission for what is there i am sure on the days they have events with historical reenactments its awesome and worth seeing

Very nice and informative historical site. Great price for all that was offered. Really enjoyed the self walking tour to go at your own pace.
Terri Hoover — Google review
It is a cute little place for a little history lesson. Only about a half hour to go through
Keblab17 — Google review
We took a picnic lunch and spent the afternoon exploring the buildings, playing on the marri-go-round, and reading fun facts. There are about 10 building including a bank, post office, jail, court house, blacksmith, and gas station on 4 acres. There is a covered picnic area and small play ground. This site is part of Abilene's Round Up pass (available at the Abilene visitor center) making it a fun cheap activity.
The Buddy Holly Center is an arts complex that serves as a museum dedicated to the history of rock music pioneer, Buddy Holly. It showcases his personal items such as guitars, recordings, clothing and photographs, in addition to a documentary about his life. The center also features a memorial for the late artist and offers concerts and classes. For just $5 entry fee during weekdays with no waiting time, visitors can learn about Holly's roots in Lubbock and appreciate the informative displays.
Would definitely recommend stopping by to this museum if in the area. Nice staff. Prices where fair however the museum is quite small. 2 viewing rooms only and a video that is played that is roughly 20 mins. No pictures allowed in gallery which was unfortunate. Gift shop was decently priced with many items to choose from. Pleased with overall experience.
Maribel Rivera — Google review
Pretty interesting!! I liked learning about Buddy Holly and his roots in Lubbock. Definitely worth a trip. I wish there had been a few more interactive exhibits and music but it was still pretty nice. The Gift Shop was pretty solid and I liked the house tour.
Laura Beth — Google review
Buddy Holly is one of the most important figures in rock and pop music. His home town has done a great job putting together lots of reminders about this, as well as s glimpse into his childhood.
If you like music and you’re in Lubbock, you need to visit!
Dion C Tongue — Google review
Buddy Holly was born in Lubbock, Texas. The city has embraced the story of his short life...killed in a plane crash at the age of 26.
The charming center walks you through his life. However, importantly it does a terrific job of showing his influence on musicians such as the Beatles, Bob Dyland and even opened for Elvis.
The grounds are beautiful.
Kathy Condon — Google review
Nice museum on Buddy Holly. Displayed history and memorabilia. The statie is across the street from the Buddy Holly center. It is very clean and well kept. Grassy area and free parking. Military and student discounts.
denise vargas — Google review
If you are lover of music and history this is an amazing must see if you are in the Lubbock Texas area. The exhibit that is devoted to Buddy Holly where you will do hand written lyrics, outfits and musical instruments and so much more. No photos allowed inside the exhibit, makes the visit that much more memorable.
Gela?s Foodie Adventures — Google review
We went on the anniversary of Buddy Holly's death and the museum was free for the day. The museum was very clean and modern and had a lot of information on the Crickets. There's also a jazz gallery in the side room and a small theater showcasing a documentary on Buddy Holly. Next door is the drummer's childhood house where they practiced and across the street is the Buddy Holly memorial. The museum did a wonderful job honoring him and the Crickets.
Kelsi H — Google review
Great experience to learn about a musical icon who hap his music career cut short. Not allowed to take photos of the artifacts on display, but you can in the home.
Jimmy Smith — Google review
Very interesting and nostalgic... The staff were very helpful, and it was so great to get that close to Buddy's stuff, being a biker, loved the Ariel, 😎 and the pic of him sat on it ..
Keff Moran — Google review
The museum is small, but is loaded with information. The 18 minute film was very informative and interesting. Admission was reasonable, $10 adults and $8.00 senior.
Denise Diltz — Google review
Great museum. Buddy Holly memorial. Informative. They kept things that were used by Buddy Holly such as his bike, eye glass, recordings, guitars, pictures, his tshirts, other attires and belongings. They show a documentary on Buddy Holly that I also liked. Great place for those who has interest in the history of rock n Rolla music and it’s pioneer, Buddy Holly. Entry fee only $5. No waiting time on weekdays.
Hasib Chowdhury — Google review
Nice museum that offers a great perspective on a very important musical pioneer. Not a ton of exhibits, but then you realize that Buddy Holly only had 22 years on this earth. Poignant and moving place.
BRAD BURT — Google review
Ample parking. Museums have gotten more costly, but they have to raise funds. This is an exhibit for his fans. It was sad, as he died young, before he could reach his full potential. Allow about an hour. No photography permitted.
Dee Dee — Google review
Great place to visit. The museum guide was very knowledgeable. Lots of personal artifacts to see. Do not expect to take photos and videos. It is not allowed.
Warren Smiley — Google review
It was closed when went but I still enjoyed such a beautiful tribute, if your there make the trip to the cemetery, and his mother home. I hope to go again and this time actually get to go inside
Arturo Rodriguez — Google review
We went to see Shien Yun at Buddy Holly. It was amazing. Clear bag policy is in effect. We have been to events here the only thing they did not have this time was valet service. Which I was very disappointed in them. My husband is handicapped and can not walk long distances and the valet service sure helps him not having to walk great distances. I noticed other patrons pulling up as well expecting the service and having to park far of with their loved one. That is the only reason for the 3 stars.
Jana Davis — Google review
This little museum is worth the reasonable price of admission. The timeline of how country and blues music led to rock and roll is very interesting and winds throughout the displays While the displays are well presented there is sparse information about what is in many of the displays they do not allow photos.
Richard Chabrajez — Google review
A nicely shaded outdoor plaza area greats you as you enter. There is a small movie theater and a couple of display rooms, gift shop, and public art display. The admission also includes a tour of the house next door. The facility is a repurposed railroad depot.
Les Kuehl — Google review
It's basically just one room, but the artifacts here are priceless. Lots of things from Buddy's childhood and highschool years. Don't forget to grab a brochure that explains what all the items are as you go around the room. I enjoyed my time here. Ticket was $10.
The National Ranching Heritage Center is a museum dedicated to American ranching and frontier life. It features various historic structures and artifacts that have been relocated for preservation purposes. Visitors are advised to go on a cloudy day as it can take around two hours to see everything, including reading about each building. While visitors cannot enter any of the houses due to preservation needs, they can see inside through gates or windows. Admission is free, but donations are accepted via cash or barcode scanning.
Really enjoyed this. A lot of area to cover, but flat. Large variety of homes to look at. Took me about 2 hrs to walk through with me stopping and reading everything. Bathrooms at entrance and drinks to buy available in gift shop. Gift shop had cute stuff.
Leah Glavan — Google review
We came from Odessa Texas,
Great place for kids and the whole family.
Lots of things to see and learn about Texas roots ranching, a beautiful place, very very clean. My kids and i love it. I will recommend this place to everyone visiting Lubbock. 5-6 hrs or more learning about rancher life and old traditions.
JAVI HV — Google review
Absolutely entertaining and educational visit. Great art, unique displays, dozens of historic buildings, exhibits for branding & barbed wire, and more! Well worth the time.
Shawna Lloyd — Google review
Spectacular! Inside is lovely, but the multiple structures on the grounds are amazing!
Laurence Jackson — Google review
So beautiful! We came right before they close at 4 PM, but we were still able to take a tour! Most of it is outdoors so dress according but it was amazing
Molly Josie — Google review
We recently visited The National Ranching Heritage Center and must say that this is a fabulous facility. So glad they have dismantled and reassembled all of these important ranch buildings from across the region. The grounds are thoughtfully laid out so that you can take a leisurely stroll at you own pace to see all of the saved buildings. We learned a lot about ranch life in the Panhandle Plains area of our state. The main building has great displays and beautiful western art. Looking forward to a return visit one day. And with facilities geared specifically to kids it’s a great place for them, too. Go…….you will not be disappointed
Randy Huggins — Google review
Great place to see what life was like. Many historic buildings on well maintained grounds. Fairly long walk to see them all, but there are benches and shade along the way. Most allow you to see through an open window or door and are decorated with periods furnishings.
Will Oestreich — Google review
Absolutely enjoyed this museum so much that we decided to go back the next day! The fire, gun, and history of ranch life was so informative. I especially like the history of each building and where it was before relocated. My favorite was the handcrafted wood sculpture "Ode to Joy" I highly recommend!
The facility was clean, staff were friendly, and a guest book is available.
A Spice Below the Horizon — Google review
Go! It’s a beautiful and a unique experience. It’s free but I would pay if I had to because it was awesome. My 9 and 12 year old sons loved it. The pictures do it No justice.
Donna Vital — Google review
One of the best museum I ever visited in my life, the idea is so unique, there is an outside part that touch the old building/ houses over the years, you will have the chance to see how the life used to be in texas in the previous 200 years.
Also you can see old train, school, church and others.
Entrance fee: Free
Visiting duration: 2-3 hours
Free parking avaliable.
I strongly recommend it and I believe this place is family friendly.
Mohammad Mahmoud — Google review
This is an amazing place to visit by yourself or with the family if you are from Lubbock but especially if you or your family are from out of town and it's your first visit. It has beautiful landscaping great for photos and wonderful historical buildings. The history behind the buildings and things here are astonishing and priceless. The employees have done society a favor and given us such an amazing gift in the preservation of small pieces of history for us to enjoy and learn about and from. THIS HISTORICAL HERITAGE MUSEUM IS ABSOLUTELY FREE FOR THE PUBLIC TO ENJOY. IT'S A MUST VISIT. The photos provided are just a small glimpse of what this place has to offer. There is so much more
Annie Elizabeth Cedars — Google review
Awesome place to visit any day. But highly recommended going on a cloudy day. It took us about 2 hours to see everything plus the reading on each building. You cannot go inside any house they all have a gate in front where you can only see the inside. Even the biggest one (greenhouse) it's locked you can only see thru the windows. But I understand they need to be preserved. Admission is free but donations are welcome by cash or by scanning the barcode if no cash on hand in order. To do the walking you have to get there before 4:00 or at 4:00. Overall a great educational experience not only for kids but also for adults. The staff that we interact with were very friendly and respectful.
Equestrian, hiking & biking trails & camping amid scenic red canyons & grasslands with a bison herd.
Great place to spend a few days days. The RV sites are level (site 17 was very level), the sites are spacious, friendly staff and good hiking (the canyon and surrounding areas are beautiful). As an added bonus, there are lots of bison, prairie dogs and even saw a road runner. Another great Texas State Park.
Stan Orlowski — Google review
Great sites and an overflow camping area for those that messed up their reservation (😁) and don't need hookups. There are around 250 bison in the canyon, traveling in groups/solo. We definitely sat in our car some waiting on one group to decide to fully cross the park road. One herd hangs out a lot right by restrooms/playground so you will Def see some! The prairie dogs are super cute and also right by the restrooms! The sidewalk cuts right through their town. Playground is just a metal slide and some swings but was enough for our kiddos. Lovely scenery!! Photos of our trailer below are in the overflow camp lot. It's just a big open space.
Chevi Hodges — Google review
This is a great place for hiking, mountain biking or just camping for some alone time. South Prong trail was my favorite had to yield to 3 buffalo twice on the way. But the view from atop the south prong trail was spectacular. Fern cave was neat and cool. I enjoyed the Haynes Ridge Overlook Trail with its narrow pathways but great views along the way. Eagle point trail way was great too plenty of speculation views on this trail too. I mountain biked only half of the canyon rim trail it was nice but decided to turn around when I saw a buffalo blocking the trail up ahead. I really liked seeing the prairie dogs. It was definitely fun to explore this unique landscape.
Jonathan Palmer — Google review
This place is beautiful and peaceful. My family visited for the day. The check in staff were welcoming and informative especially since it was our first time there. My only gripe is that the bathrooms by the welcome center could use some love and attention. There were plenty of places to camp out and a lake to boat or fish. Buffalo roam freely as well as prairie dogs. Bring lots of water as it gets hot but overall beautiful experience!
L Welch — Google review
We went on an 8 hr hike here, deep into the canyon. It was beautiful. Just be sure if you're hiking in hot weather to bring plenty of water and protein. The deeper in that you go, you'll find 'fern cave'. It's a great place to refresh yourself, with the creek running through. Watch out for wild Buffalo.
Northern girl — Google review
Neat State Park with great canyon views. Lots and I mean LOTS of Bison. As long as you stay away they are no harm. Beautiful creatures and the scenery was awesome. Camped out the back of my Hummer ( VERY COMFY )..... Will definitely be back.
Lisa McCloud — Google review
Beautiful park. Went second week of December and it wasn’t busy. Took upper south prong trail to fern cave (flat for about a mile then it becomes challenging hiking up the canyon then back to flat trail). Did an out and back on upper north prong trail (easy flat trail. Couldn’t find the POI on this trail). Then took Haynes Ridge Trail (flat and easy) to the overlook. A must see, very beautiful view of the park. Then took north prong spur to the parking lot and took the rd back to the south prong trailhead.
Rachel Millman — Google review
Fantastic park. It is the home of the Texas State Bison herd. We only saw 1 as the park is quite large but were told there are a couple hundred. There is a nice prairie dog colony that you drive right through. You're able to drive through part of the park giving views of multiple landscapes. We saw a coyote and multiple types of birds. The amphitheater has a colony of birds who use dirt to build nests under the awning.
John Barnhart — Google review
Very nice State park in TX, lots of nice scenery, nice trails and an amazing looking park. There's a scenery road you can drive along, or you can park up and take one of the trails.
There are bison that you are able to see up close, they usually are along the roads or next to their scratching posts, and they are majestic creatures.
There is a self check-in if you arrive outside the opening hours of the visitors centre, however it requires cash, so be prepared when you arrive!
Can recommend wholeheartedly, a lovely place to visit.
Alex — Google review
Visited this park during the winter storm weekend so it was a crisp 7°F, which meant no hiking for me. I arrived around 9am and there was no one in the park aside from a few rv campers. As soon as I drove towards the park after the visitors center, I saw bison right on the road. It was such a great way to start my day. The drive in this park is definitely one of my top 5 favorites. It's relaxing and no matter which direction you're looking the scenery is stunning! I will be back to hike!
Vivian Pan — Google review
We’ve stayed here twice so far and have loved it both times. The RV sites are large and private. Bison walked thru the campground both times we were there, which was so fun to watch. There are also cute prairie dogs near the campground. Our absolute favorite part of all are the trails though….they are spectacular!
Brittany B — Google review
Absolutely love camping here with my kids. There's usually not very many people here so there's not a lot of noise and you can really enjoy the silence and the sounds of nature. The only downside is you do have to pack in to the tent sites just a little bit so make sure you bring a cart or something similar to haul your stuff down and back up. There's always a lot of Wildlife and there are raccoons that will steal your food if you don't have it put away properly. They do know how to open a tote and a cooler so I bring bungee cords to wrap around. Definitely worth the hour and a half drive from Amarillo.
Kat Holmes — Google review
Even though I'm from east Texas, I grew to love west Texas when I lived out there. This is a wonderful representation of west Texas. The terrain is rugged and you can still see to the horizon and beyond. All the trails are amazingly well maintained and the campsites offer amazing views. I would strongly recommend the campsites in the upper to mid 50s in the little red tent area.
TXSuburbanHomestead — Google review
My FAVORITE Texas State park!! Has the BEST hiking hands down! The scenery seems flat and lackluster until you travel beyond the Honey Flats! Absolutely gorgeous here! I love the Little Red Tent Camping area.
Stefanie Sims — Google review
This park has breathtaking views, and the buffalo are everywhere grazing and enjoying themselves. It will take several visits to hike all the trails and see what this park has to offer completely.
Deana Sprinkles — Google review
Absolutely beautiful state park. Seeing the Bison herd was memorable. The trails that we hiked were all a wonderful experience. The only thing about the park that was kind of disappointing was the condition of the restrooms and showers. They were pretty old and really could use a remodel and refresh.
Michael Dahle — Google review
Beautiful park with absolutely stunning views and wildlife. It's a little on the rougher side but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Curb your expectations, it won't be the Hilton and the wildlife are wild... Bring spare tp just in case.
Ben Jamin — Google review
This park really leans into the "wild" aspect of the area.
Bison roam the park as they please, sheep climb amongst the steep ridgelines, coyotes get chatty once the sun sets, and it's literally a breath of fresh air!
With camping options ranging from electric and water sites for RVs, to equestrian campgrounds, there's an option for anyone (even primitive camping)!
It's also less frequented than nearby Palo Duro which makes reservations easier. Oh and their restroom and shower facilities are some of the cleanest I've seen at any park in the state.
My only nitpick was that on certain trails the path wasn't always super clear which led to some unintentional night hikes: but hey, there's almost no light pollution so the stars are a sight to behold
I'm not a cyclist so I didn't try the trailway, but it seemed popular enough so I'd imagine it's worth the effort.
Overall, a very nice and quiet getaway; I definitely recommend.

I love this place and the story behind the ranch! The entire staff were so friendly and accommodating. The young lady that checked us in was so sweet. It is kept neat and orderly. Wonderfull gallery filled with information on the Goodnights. We took the tour of their home and the guide was also delightful. The home is beautiful with nicely groomed grounds. If you love history this place is for you. Thanks to all!

Wonderful place to stop. The staff is super friendly and knowledgeable. The history is very interesting and the house is gorgeous. Loved learning about a piece of Texas history I didn't know.
Candace Patterson — Google review
This was an excellent stop. I really enjoyed the tour and the stories about the family. The guide was so helpful. The house was beautiful.
Rachel Brownlee — Google review
3 stars is because I wasn't able to take the tour as they were cancelled because of heating issues. There was no social media post of the issue, which I rely on to provide information. Also, multiple restroom stalls were out of order. Otherwise, this place is immaculate and you will definitely learn something you didn't know. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. There are 3 bison adjacent to the property that are descendants of the original Goodnight herd.
Casey — Google review
Great pit stop. The main building only has 5-10 minutes of free exhibits. The tour of the house costs a few bucks but is worth it. My kids favorite part was seeing the buffalo up close
Steven Gangstead — Google review
What a beautifully restored home. Loved hearing the story and details on the Goodnights and the museum is very interesting. It's a story of that's not just of Texas but affected the nation. Would recommend for all ages.

Finally got to stop by and check out this beautiful home and historic site. Wonderful history of the Palo Duro Canyon area and bison preservation of the Goodnight family

The good night ranch is a must see for those who enjoy cowboy history. It is also an important bit of history as these ranchers did much to preserve the bison in the United States.
John Toso — Google review
What a fabulous tour! The house is beautifully restored to 1887 and our guide was not only very informative, you could tell how much she enjoyed what she did.

Absolutely loved this place , the staff were so knowledgeable. If you love Texas and Texas history this is a great place to visit. If you loved the movie Lonesome Dove Charles Goodnight is Capt Call. You can learn a lot at this museum. highly recommend

Amazing. The tour by Evan was absolutely fascinating. His depth of knowledge was astounding. A great look at the past.
No charge for visitor center or to look at grounds. Guided tour of the ranch house was only four dollars. Highly recommend.

What a treat to have been going home from vacation and choose this route! When we saw the sign Goodnight we knew we had to stop. We so enjoyed visiting to the lovely employees and your guides. The short films were very informative and the tour of the grounds and house was amazing. Our guide knew her history! The house is amazing along with it's furnishings. We considered this our lucky day to have stumbled upon this piece of history. We encourage everyone to take the time to visit here. You will totally enjoy this walk back in time.
Frannie MacKenzie — Google review
If you remember the book or miniseries, The Lonesome Dove, you will love the Charles Goodnight house tour. We had a very knowledgeable guide, Evan, a historian who really took us through the history of the house. This is very finely restored. Also, there is a museum which further tells Good night's story particularly how his efforts saved the southern buffalo from extinction.
It's our favorite place to visit. It is very inspiring & a special place to be. We could stay for hours if it was possible. We feel God's love when we are there.

AMAZING!!!! Seen the huge cross from the side of the highway and decided to turn around. So glad we did.
It is breathtaking. The cross was huge, an extract replica if the tomb Jesus was buried in, amazing metal statues of the stations of the cross, a gorgeous fountain and a cute gift shop with plenty of items to look at.
I 100% recommend you all to stop and take a look. The woman in the gift shop was so nice to us and made lovely conversation.
Robyn Martinez — Google review
This awesome monument is worth the sidetrip.
Though prayerful consideration of each feature is difficult in hot Texas sun, an Easter visit might be more advantageous to contemplation.
David Smith — Google review
Wow, what an amazing spot! When you walk onto the grounds, you can feel that prayer upon prayer has gone up. It's sort of weird to me to build this masterpiece in the middle of nowhere, but I do think there is something quite amazing happening. I can only imagine all the drivers that are randomly blessed by a stop. This is an amazing meditation point where you can walk through life size statues of the passion, go to the cross, even sit at the last supper. There is also a lovely fountain to sit at and pray. If you are ever cruising down the 40, make time for at least a 30 minute stop, longer if you can!
Anthony Howard — Google review
I found this place on Tik Tok and had to visit. Definitely worth the drive, and time spent there. It was moving to say the least. Beautiful, breathtaking and you can feel the love and pain for ultimate sacrifice for us sinners. If you're in the area, you have to stop and see it for yourself.

Wow!!! No need to leave the United States... Jerusalem is right here in Texas. better to stay safe in the US! Stations of the Cross statues are life size. Jesus tomb is life size and the blessed waterfall will keep you speechless. Excellent tour stop for all Christians, yet you don't have to be a Catholic to enjoy this beautiful, peaceful, breathtaking location. Best to come in the day time. Unforgettable site. Must come see it at least once in your lifetime.

Good people. Providing a peace-filled reminder to a stressed world that Jesus loves you. You are here for a purpose. The Groom Cross, stations of the cross, and your campus and gift shop are beautiful.

Great place to stop on your road trip. I loved learning more about the Savior and the beautiful feeling you get as you walk around. The gift shop was super cute too.

Very spiritual place. Reminds you of what Jesus went thru for our sins. The statues are very detailed. A must stop to visit.

What a beautiful tribute to the Lord Jesus Christ. Praise God for our redemption through His work on the cross. Touching tribute to all those who lost their lives through abortion. The Lord knows and loves each one. Wonderful place to see!
LINDA STUDER — Google review
If you want to be captivated by beautiful biblical artwork and sculptures I recommend going here. This area personally for me is very relaxing and really makes me wanna delve deeper into God's wonderful mysteries. This is the very place my husband knew he had to marry me. He told me he felt that God was speaking to him when we visited for the first time with my family. Truly an astonishing visit.
Cynder Nail — Google review
This is a place where you feel very humbled, the center is a huge cross and circling the huge cross are bronze life-size statues of Jesus Christ and different scenes that were from the Bible scriptures approximately 12 to 14 different stations around the cross and it is so lifelike. It also has the tomb and the holy sepulchre and a huge gift shop. It cost nothing but it will take a piece of your heart as you see it unfold before your eyes the crucifixion of our Savior Jesus Christ. A Must Visit !!!
Curt Blankenship — Google review
A huge cross that can be seen 5 miles away. Very impressive. Nice gift shop. A short movie about the construction. There is a prayer room available. Well worth the extra time it added to our travels. This christian woman was so moved by the stations of the cross, so realistic, it brought me to tears.
Jan S — Google review
Be still my heart and thank you for this amazing sight celebrating the life, death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The stations of the cross are done beautifully as is the last supper. Take time to study the the facial expression for each disciple. I so appreciated how the artist captured the facial expression and body position of each man. What really caught my heart is the memorial of Jesus on His knees holding a pre born baby. The sadness and gentleness depicted in His face broke my heart. I am move by this remembrance for all the unborn babies never given the opportunity to live out their life due to abortion. Technically, the cross here in Groom isn't the largest but I'm not going to point that out to anyone. There's a cross in Effingham Illinois that is a midge taller. But the land here is flatter and you'll be seeing this cross from nearly 20 miles away as you're heading between Amarillo and Oklahoma City.
It is located just off I-40 with an easy exit. There is a large gravel parking lot with plenty of room for larger vehicles.
At the base of the cross are life-sized statues that depict the 14 Stations of the Cross. There is also a small amphitheater. It's an ideal stop if you're a Christian or Christian-curious.

I really enjoyed visiting this place. So much . Loved reading all the things. Loved looking at all the Statues. Was so neat and moving to go into the cave with the stone that tolled away. Prices was high on most of the things to buy though. Loved, Loved the fountain.

Oh my! What can I say, but that I'm so glad we stopped by!! Beautiful almost or close to life-sized statues of our dear Lord's last days, brought to life in "The Stations of the Cross." Please take a quick exit into the town of Groom, Texas, and take a look for yourself. There's even a generous sized gift shop with beautiful gifts for purchase.

Nice place to take a break while driving the I40 corridor in Texas. Vary peaceful. A great place to reflect on the Life of our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ. Be sure to take a stroll into the visitor center and say “HI” to Jason.
Palo Duro Canyon State Park spans an impressive 60 miles of ravine that boasts towering 800-ft cliffs. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, including hiking the numerous trails and taking in the musical "Texas" at the park's amphitheater. It is advisable to arrive early to beat the heat and bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and bug repellent as necessary.
Amassing Canyon to explore there is so much to see and many trails to hike but you have to go there early because it can get hot very quick also bring plenty of water and sunscreen and maybe some kind of bug repellent depending on the time of the year you are visiting.
At gift shop you can buy some snacks and food things but if you bring your own picnic there is plenty of nice and shaded areas to stop and refuel your body while enjoying the breathtaking views pretty much anywhere in the Canyon property.
I absolutely love my visit here and never gets old because you will always find a new view to take in!!!

A truly beautiful place to see. Many trails for hiking. Nice facilities. Nice campgrounds although difficult to get reservations, books up months in advance. Highly recommend a visit. Make sure if you plan on hiking you take plenty of water along. Also consider making day pass reservations as park fills to capacity some days.

What am amazing place! Even with a very rainy week, the nature here is awe inspiring. Campgrounds are well maintained. Bathrooms with showers are great. Roads are well maintained. Definitely a great state park to visit!

Beautiful park! Lots of hiking trails. Beware of the dessert tarantulas we encountered 3 on a trail! Lots of spiders and huge ants! But that is nature. We enjoyed it! Bathrooms were clean and smelled good on Juniper loop.

Palo Duro Canyon, often referred to as the "Grand Canyon of Texas," is a spectacular natural wonder located in the Texas Panhandle, USA. It was formed by millions of years of erosion by the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River. It exposes colorful layers of rock, including red, orange, yellow, and lavender hues, making it visually stunning.
It is the second-largest canyon in the United States, stretching over 120 miles long, up to 20 miles wide, and reaching depths of around 800 feet. The canyon covers approximately 29,000 acres of land.
Palo Duro Canyon is not only a geological wonder but also a natural playground for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a wide range of recreational activities and stunning scenery for visitors to enjoy. It's a must-visit destination for those exploring the beauty of Texas.

Always an amazing experience when I visit this park. I try to explore different trails each time I come here and this time was no exception. Absolutely breathtaking scenery no matter what trail I’ve taken.

Did the lighthouse trail, fun, not hard at all, bring plenty of water. Lots of things to do here:
- Hike
- Run
- Mountain bike
- Horse ride
There's little restaurant... Didn't try food there but foods available... After a few miles at the Canyon any food tastes amazing lol
Overall so much fun, can't wait to come back to explore a bit more!

If you like hiking, this is your place to visit! Over 30 miles of trails with lots of options from very easy to difficult. We stayed in Juniper Campground for three nights. It was clean and well maintained. The bath house was great with good hot water.

The scenery is awesome!!! During spring break, I went during the week day so there was a sizable amount of guests (totally more fun with people around) yet not very crowded. And the temperature was not too high either. Many trails for all levels of hiker. I chose to hike but there are many more activities that can be done. Even drive on the road inside the state park only, you can still see beautiful landscape with red-orange hue canyon and clear blue sky. Definitely recommended!!!

Nice spaced out sites with water and electric with 2 dump stations, no shade really though. Campgrounds are way back in the park, very quiet and secluded. We stayed in the Juniper campground, site 105. Nice views and trails from campsites. Lots of nice trails to take but unfortunately when we were there it was well over 100 degrees so we didn't get to partake much in the hiking. The hiking we did do we started out early to beat the heat. Didn't use the bathhouses but they seemed to be okay, not very many showers and no AC or vents in the buildings though. Wish we could have explored more as it is a beautiful park. Maybe we will come back when it isn't so hot.

Fantastic canyon to visit! Located a short drive outside of Amarillo, Tx. Very scenic state park containing miles of hiking, biking, and equine trails. Take plenty of water if you visit during warmer times of the year. The canyon floor can easily get 110 to 120 degrees. The Lighthouse is the most recognized feature here and we'll worth the hike needed to get closer views.

Palo Duro Canyon is a nice trip we took. We were able to drive the vehicle far into the canyon and explore the area from there. It has many places to rest and eat. You can also see different wildlife.

Don't miss going here!! It's spectacular! I don't recommend going during summer months when it's brutally hot. Loads of hiking trails, wildlife, and biking areas. Wear boots and be snake aware. If you aren't hiking, it's an easy drive. Not much is out that way, so bring plenty of water and pack your lunch!
Also, the night views are amazing! Stars as far as you can see!

This is a place everyone should experience, it's very beautiful. This is our second trip here and each time we stay longer first was 4 days. This time was 7 days. The hiking is great they have from very easy to very hard. We always camp in the Mesquite camping area because of the views.
David Davidson — Google review
We love Palo Duro Canyon. The idea that we can drive down and camp inside the second largest canyon in the United States is amazing! The views are captivating and lots of wildlife is there. We saw many deer and heard coyotes. It was hunting season when we were there so many of the trails were closed but they look like great biking and hiking trails. The campground is great, water and electric only with a dump station on the way out. Leave your cell phone in the truck, there’s no service in the canyon. It’s very windy down there (and in the area as a whole) but it strangely adds to the relaxation factor. This was our second year and three nights wasn’t enough, we’ll come back for a week next time.
Amanda M — Google review
Palo Duro Canyon is the crown jewel among State Parks in Texas. In spite of it being remote and not near the major population centers of the state, it still had about 375,000 visitors in FY 2023. With more than 25 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and equestrian activities, along with abundant camping and day-use facilities, there is plenty of room to roam.
You will often find Palo Duro referred to as The Grand Canyon of Texas. I dislike such comparisons, because they can diminish during the comparison. Hey, at least you can drive into this canyon. The one in Arizona can’t make that claim.
Do be advised that they aren’t kidding about the heat. The canyon floor can and does hit 130F or more in summer. For that reason, winter is my favorite time of year to visit, with many days ranging from the 50s to 70s. If you come in summer, plan on sunblock, water bottles, and insect repellant to deter the notoriously large—and biting—flies.
The summer musical—Texas!—is a delight to see, even if it sometimes crosses the border with tropes and cliches. But that’s the whole point, so sit back and enjoy.
My only beef with the park is that, in spite of its massive size, there is a whole other section that has been made off-limits, with land being leased to private ranchers. This means that you won’t get to see Cathedral Peak, the crumbling ruins of the Kneeling Camel, and numerous slot canyons. Maybe someday the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will ease up on these restrictions.
Still, there is more than enough for out-of-town guests to enjoy. It seems that only those of us who live here fret about what we cannot do. But that’s probably because we call this our playground, and come here frequently enough to yearn for more.

One of the best parks I have ever been to right in my backyard! (figuratively) We had a good time, saw a lot of beautiful breathtaking views, the kids had fun with the junior ranger program and got their badge! We did a 10 mile hike, various trails, we suffered a little, I hadn’t realized my hiking boots had given their last the last hike I did( always check your gear!) so I had a few blisters there at the end, but definitely worth it. Two days is not enough to explore this beautiful park.
Eli Sierra — Google review
Wonderful place. You can drive to the bottom to camp or walk the trails. Second longest canyon in the U.S. after the Grand Canyon. Soils exposed along the canyon walls date back to 250 million years ago and expose the thin layer where prehistoric fossils have been found. Go see the video about the history of the area at the visitor center for a good understanding of what you are looking at when you walk or drive the canyon. I think it's worthy of a National Park designation.

We were taking a trip out west going through Amarillo, TX and weren’t sure if it was too far of a detour. If you ever wonder if you want to take the detour, do it! It was absolutely worth it and a great way to stretch your legs on a long trip. I hope to be back to get a chance to do more hiking on their trails.
Sarah — Google review
I love this place, it's a different world down in the canyon. Some excellent hiking trails - the light house trail is a must. Bathroom are very nice. Incredible views of the canyon
Mark Rose — Google review
If you can go and are in the area. Go. It's an amazing hike on a well maintained trail. At the trail head the rangers are fantastic making sure that you don't go in unprepared. (144° on ground by noon.) So leave the puppers home for this one. Unless you get out there early.
This is not for the faint (ha get it?) Of heart. There are plenty of resting spots but the bulk (6mile round trip) of the trail is not covered with shade... reports of snakes. Heat sickness and exhaustion is real and will get you quicker than anything so bring water (at least 3L per person), hat, long sleeved light clothing if you need.
Enjoy and Be Safe!

A beautiful state park with lots and lots of trails. Almost no cellular connectivity in the canyon, which is great. Dump stations are a bit too tight for a big rig, but manageable. Overall, an absolutely amazing experience & I would highly recommend it.

This is a beautiful state park! The canyon is spectacular. I visited with my best friend this past summer and it was too hot to do any hiking, but we did get out and walk a little and take pictures. We also drove around the park to see the scenery. I definitely want to visit again sometime in the fall or early spring when the weather will be nicer to get out and hike. I also like that it is a dog friendly park - I hope to take my future dog here and hike.

Took a road trip to Palo Duro Canyon! The long weekend just so happened to coincide with the winter storm. I was able to catch the sunrise and be the second one on Lighthouse Trail. The windchill was no joke when I got up to the Lighthouse, but the view was breathtaking! I was able to get out and back within 4 hours. Plenty of people were camping as well despite the temperatures dropping, but it was definitely warmer within the canyon.
Vivian Pan — Google review
2/3 of the park was closed for hunting when we were here, so that left many trails closed. We were still able to hike for a good chunk of a day and the views are amazing here! Hiking was great. We were here in the off season so there were few people. The campground is nice and the shower/toilet room was clean and well kept. The camp host was pleasant and has the most wonderfully happy dog. We had a burger from the Trading Post and is was delicious.

I love Palo Duro Canyon! It still awes me to be driving through flat plains & suddenly run up on a Big Crack in the earth which opens up to Spanish skirts with a stream running between them, the landscape dotted with juniper, hackberry trees, & wildflowers spring-fall. I like hiking the trails - there are a good variety of them, so you can choose how you want to hike that day. If you're there during the week when it's a little less busy, it's amazing how quiet it is (not nature, of course) -it soothes my soul. Be smart! Come prepared! Summertime, it's hot - know your trail & the temperature & bring enough water for your hike!

I stopped in Palo Duro Canyon State Park on a road trip from Arkansas to Arizona in the summer of 2023. I wasn't able to spend as much time there as I would have liked, and I'll definitely make a point to return.
Quite frankly I was floored by the beauty of the Canyon. I just saw the canyon, pretty much from the lookouts near the visitor center.
The visitor center had super friendly staff. I will say that trashcans seemed a little sparse for some reason.

Hiked the Lighthouse trail, the CCC ridge trail, the Rock Garden trail, and the Paseo Del Rio trail.
The Lighthouse trail is beautiful but more strenuous than expected. Take lots of water.
Very scenic and worth the trip.
Set in a scenic canyon, this amphitheater features seasonal performances about the history of Texas.
This production is and always has been amazing. My Parents took our family to see it every year for most of my childhood. As an adult, it is just as mesmerizing as when I was little. A fun night of entertainment for the family. It also throws in a history lesson even if it is just inspired by that history. A great experience in every way.

One of the best musicals I've ever seen. TEXAS shows how perfected it has become over the past 59 years it has been performed. This is a must see for anyone living in West Texas. I very much enjoyed it, I will be back to see it again, and I will recommend it to everyone. I went to the very last show of the season and I sat toward the very back, right of center, and the view was still great. I doubt there is a bad seat in the whole amphitheatre.

Home of Texas Outdoor Musical Drama Theater
Great Experience with amazing performance, lighting, sound system and stage show.
They staged the history, clashes between native tribals, railroads....
From there official info:
A LONE HORSEMAN, carrying the flag of the great state of Texas appears atop a 600 foot cliff, signaling the beginning of the most spectacular outdoor musical in the nation. With a moving swell of the music, the horseman gallops across the rim. Suddenly, a cast of more than 60 actors, singers and dancers takes the stage to kick off the show that millions of fans from all around the world have come to see.

Where else can you see a musical performance in the middle of the "Texas Grand Canyon"? This was such a unique event! We purchased tickets about 2 months ahead of time and after looking at other reviews online, we took someone's advice of where to sit. In case you need the info, the right side, halfway up (rows K-M) are perfect. The show had a ton of college-age actors/singers/dancers in it (I'm guessing from West Texas A&M down the street in Canyon, TX). They did such a great job and had huge smiles on their faces the entire time.
The only thing we didn't necessarily enjoy was the storyline. It was a bit strange and didn't flow correctly in some spots. But it was a great experience overall!

We have attended the Texas musical in beautiful Palo Duro Canyon for years. My husband has been attending since the 80s. And I have to sadly say, last night was awful. We went to see our beloved show and continue our family tradition...but the show was quite disappointing. It was not upbeat and lively. It was slow and even dark feeling. They cut the beautiful, colorful dresses and dance that we all loved. They cut many lines and comic relief. The energetic, cowboy dances were replaced with more alternative, ballet moves...it was not fun at all. The music was mostly slow and depressing as well. And there were no fireworks, after we have received much rain in our area. I wish we would have known about all the changes to our wonderful Texas. There is usually a patriotic video at the end and that was deleted as well. What a terrible disappointment Texas has become. We would have stayed home if we had known. I truly believe the director must be depressed or something. I do NOT recommend that anyone waste their time and money on this show.
Danielle Stegall — Google review
The musical definitely gets 5 Stars the BBQ barely got a 1... dry meat, no flavour beans and coleslaw and potato salad. So not worth $17.25. Top tip go to Whataburger and arrive a little later especially if it's hot. Most of the players were young but they were enthusiastic and very good. Spontaneous moments of laughter and shock. Not sure about how much history I learnt? Fireworks were fabulous, that the time and only time you can take photos. I would pay to see the show again, VIP package and food absolutely not. I'm sure it's Covid related but the gift shop 👎
The Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum showcases the natural history of the area with a collection of bones, artifacts, and artwork. Despite initial concerns about the admission fee, visitors are encouraged to spend at least two hours exploring the numerous displays on offer. The museum covers an extensive range of topics including a pioneer town exhibit, providing an educational experience for all ages. Tourists can even obtain discount coupons from visitor centers in Amarillo to make their visit more affordable.
I have not been since I was a child. This is truly a beautiful museum that is well worth the time. If you want to visit and see everything you're going to spend a full afternoon. The staff are very courteous and helpful. Thank you, Juanita Duncan for the time and professionalism.

Very historically accurate, huge museum. Was not expecting much, was honestly very surprised at the scale and attention to detail in this place. Museum covers a lot of subjects/ areas in varying depth. Oil industry was covered in great depth and learned a few new things. Nice display of old and rare automobiles. More of a broad swath of information than deep drilling down in most sections. Pioneer town had different retail businesses of the day with an information sign at most displays- lighting was poor by several of those signs and difficult to read. Downgraded the museum as the movie was broken, as were the videos at several displays. We spent 2 1/2 hours there.

A fun little museum. Free but they take donations. I recommend donating what you can to keep this little enterprise going. They had all the way back to a 1935 Airstream, an RV used in the movie "RV", and many other interesting vintage RVs. Also some super cars and a nice collection of Harley Davidson bikes. Be sure to visit both buildings. A second nearby building had a 1963 split-window Corvette Stingray, a newer Indy Car 'vette, and several vintage race cars.

This was an unexpected surprise, there are several RV’s Motorcycles and cars. I was most interested in the vintage RV. Well worth the drive from Palo Duro Canyon. There are several that have low entry doors with signs to watch your head, but I really banged my head leaving one. Would recommend some caution tape on the inside as you leave the RV.

This is the coolest museum we've ever been to, ever. We are RV enthusiasts, and owners of our own little Class C motorhome. This was such a delight!! And they have much more than just amazing rare RV's (most of which you can ((please be gentle and careful!!! 🙏)) walk through!) But also equally amazing vintage and rare sports cars, motorcycles, toys, memorabilia and more. We had the biggest blast here!! This place is free admission, with acception of appropriate donations. We wish we could've gave more, but we had a $20 on us and threw that in there. They also have free cold water for everyone. Yes, you can feel the love here.
Now, for our pro tips on visiting this must-see Amarillo gem; finding the entrance. When you approach the RV museum, you will see a big, dark building which has "Sisemore" in big letters, on the side of it. You've found it! Turn into the first entrance, and pass through the gate, where the parking and entrance is on your right. Don't forget to check out the little building next to the main one, there's lots of awesome memorabilia and sports cars in there. Happy travels! P. S, we will be recommending this to everyone we know. And, I have to mention this: the little informative signs which most everything has, are so super wholesome and adorable, they kind of make my heart overflow with joy. You totally need to see this Museum! 1,00,00,00,000,00 recommend out of 10.

A hidden gem, literally!! A little tough to find off an access road with little signage, but WELL worth the hunt. Incredible collection of RVs, most in outstanding condition for their age. The best part is that you are encouraged to go in and look around inside them. They are not just shells either. the staff's attention to detail is fantastic. Make sure you look at everything, inside and out. Tons of artifacts arranged around the RVs give a window to the past. Free admission!!!

If you saw the animated movie cars you will recognize some of the buildings as similar to key sets in the film. It's a fun detour, doesn't take long and if you like shopping it's all there .

Very friendly gift shop near here. They stamped my passport, gave me a great couple of pins and had some awesome souvenirs. There were some cool cars driving past, also, which is why I got this photo of the Cadillac diving past.

Cool little place with some photo ops. Seems like it opens up at night there's a ton of bars down this strip. We went down on a weekday morning there was nobody walking around seemed to kind of like a ghost town. It was a lot of pass through driving traffic. Very nostalgic

I went down on a Tuesday early in the afternoon - first time through I missed it. It did not help that my GPS dropped me off about six blocks from the actual area. I am guessing that it wakes up in the evening - dead during the day. It was cool to see - although if I were to do it again, I would wait until later in the evening when the place is awake (and it is a bit cooler)...

Fun little street to visit with murals, restaurants and shops all in honor of Route 66.

Had some good experiences and some shady ones. Downtown was quite rundown and had a lot of sketchy people wandering the streets. This was in the middle of the week in the middle of the day. The Big Texan steakhouse was FABULOUS! Was worth the stop for that meal!

A decent stretch of historic Route 66 with lots of nostalgia.
The Cadillac Ranch is a quirky public art installation located in Amarillo, Texas. The installation consists of ten vintage Cadillacs buried nose-first in the ground, and is a tribute to Route 66. Over the years, the cars have been decorated by visitors with graffiti, making them an interesting and colorful addition to the cityscape.
I have passed by the Cadillac Ranch installation for many years on my trips in/out of Texas. I finally decided to make a stop to check it out. This is such a cool idea, and quite a sight to see. Best of all its totally FREE!
Built in 1974, 10 Cadillacs were buried ½ deep on the property of a local Amarillo Millionaire. People traveled from all over the world to see these Caddies, and many started to deface them for souvenirs, while others put graffiti on them in order to leave their marks. Eventually, the creators encouraged the graffiti as a way to let others express themselves and have fun doing it.
Today, only the frames of the Caddies are left, and there are decades of spray paint on the cars. It’s exciting to walk down the row of cars and see the artwork of others passing by. People from all over bring their own spray paint and leave it behind in a pile of canisters on the ground when they are done. If you want to leave your mark on these Caddies but didn’t bring any spray paint with you, don’t worry, you should have no problem finding a can in the pile that were left behind. Depending on the day you visit, your artwork might only last minutes before someone comes behind you to cover it up with their own mark. Just make sure to snap some pics of your creation before you leave so you know, if anything, for just a little while it was there.
If you ever find yourself in Amarillo, Texas, I highly recommend you take 30-45 minutes on your travels to check out this unique work of art.
Recommended for everyone!

I didn't know what to expect, but this attraction is really neat! The views are stunning and the art is captivating. It feels a little like stone henge😂
I didn't realize that the art is participatory... But some spray paint from the guy ($7.50/can) and contribute to the installation!
A steady stream of visitors adds to the charm and mystique of the site.

Great experience! It's worth the stop. Paint recommendations, White for background if you want to paint on top with a brighter/ neon color. Kids loved it! Cool trailer on sight for merchandise and paint. Sometimes you find half sprayed cans of paint lying around, grab it up, and use it, It's Free!! No admission fee.

Had been wanting to visit this since we were in the area. It was interesting to see the vast amount of signatures and people from all over. There wasn't as many cars as I thought there would be. Very strong smell of spray paint since almost everyone had cans of spray paint. It was still fun to see this little piece of history/tourist attraction. Crazy to see how many layers of paint every car had.

It's definitely an eccentric spot.
I'd recommend checking it out only if you happen to be passing by on Route 66 or Route 44 near Amarillo.
They have Cadillac cars buried halfway into the ground, which you're welcome to paint on if you're interested. Keep in mind, the paint shop nearby can be quite pricey. It might be a good idea to bring your own paint from elsewhere or hope that previous visitors have left behind some leftover bottles of paint.

I’ve been here before but it’s always cool to stop by early to beat the crowds. I went early in the morning and I took my own spray can it’s cheaper and better if you do. It’s a memorable place to do some tagging and look at cars that have been painted by everyone. The gift shop was closed when I was leaving maybe next time I’ll get something. It’s a must to stop here.

Possibly one of the best Route 66 attractions on the Mother Road.
Beautiful place, loads of history. Great for anyone of all ages to come here.
There is also a gift shop that comes around in a truck pulling the trailer.
In conclusion, a great and historic Mother Road attraction in Texas.

What a weird and quirky art exhibit. I loved the layers and layers of spray paint. People had left spray paint cans so I got to add my own name. Fun. I also loved that there was no attempt to monetize it. Just pure art for people to enjoy. Worth a stop for sure.

If you're on a journey along the historic Route 66 and find yourself in the wide expanse of Texas, there's one stop you absolutely cannot miss – the Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo. This iconic roadside attraction is more than just a collection of half-buried cars; it's a vibrant symbol of American ingenuity, creativity, and the enduring spirit of adventure.
As you approach the Cadillac Ranch, you can't help but feel a sense of excitement and curiosity. Ten vintage Cadillacs, dating from the late 1940s to the early 1960s, stand upright in a field, their colorful paint jobs and sleek lines contrasting with the endless Texas sky. It's a sight that's both surreal and mesmerizing, beckoning you to step closer and explore.
One of the most fascinating aspects of the Cadillac Ranch is its interactive nature. Visitors are not only allowed but encouraged to grab a can of spray paint and leave their mark on the cars. As a result, the Cadillacs are adorned with a kaleidoscope of colors, patterns, and messages, creating a constantly evolving work of art that reflects the creativity and individuality of each person who passes through.
But beyond the opportunity for artistic expression, the Cadillac Ranch holds a deeper significance as a cultural landmark. It's a nod to America's love affair with the automobile, a reminder of the open road and the freedom it represents. It's also a testament to the power of art to inspire, provoke, and bring people together, transcending boundaries of age, background, and nationality.
Visiting the Cadillac Ranch is more than just a pit stop on a road trip – it's an experience that leaves a lasting impression. Whether you're a seasoned traveler or a wide-eyed adventurer, there's something undeniably magical about standing amidst those towering Cadillacs, surrounded by the vastness of the Texas plains.
The Cadillac Ranch is a must-see destination for anyone with a sense of curiosity and wonder. It's a celebration of Americana at its finest, a testament to the enduring allure of the open road and the creative spirit that drives us forward. So next time you find yourself cruising down Route 66, be sure to make a detour to the Cadillac Ranch – you won't regret it.

WORTH IT! If you're staying in Amarillo or just driving through i definitely recommend stopping here the gift shop is across the street and there's a little bit of a walk out to the cars you walking through a cornfield and there's lots of cans and trash on the ground and right by the cars. it's really cool to see all the layers of spray paint and it kind of looks like it's dripping down. definitely still a really cool stop 🚗

A fun experience although extremely busy! Souvenirs and spray cans available to purchase on site. Be quick to take a picture of your artwork as it'll be covered in the space of 5 minutes lol. Definitely choose a lighter coloured paint as it was way easier to see.

I was so looking forward to Cadillac ranch! It did not disappoint. There was a little merch truck on the property and I was able to buy a beanie thank goodness because the wind was out of this world. I brought my poodle along with me to photograph with the cars. This is an excellent roadside attraction. Bring a hat. And if you forget spray paint you can but it from the truck for $7.50. Very fun

This is a fun spot to visit and doesn't take much time out of your schedule. It's worth the stop to see the art on these vehicles. You can even get spray paint to make your own mark! Check the cans on the ground - some of them still have plenty of paint. PLEASE throw your can away though... So many cans laying around is just a disgusting representation of our country. We can do better! 💙

Definitely a great place to visit if your in the area! You can take some amazing sunrise / sunset photos. You can bring your own spray paint, however there is normally always some laying around. Overall a great free spot to spend some time.

I love coming here! It is free to everyone. Which is one thing you don't see anymore! You are able to walk out too it. Make sure you bring a spray can of paint. It is very interesting how it has changed over the years!! I felt very safe doing this. Hopefully everyone that comes to enjoy it can put the spray cans in the trash! We love America! Thank you for having all of us!

It's really cool for sightseeing, but super muddy, to much standing water. You couldn't get close enough to the cars.
They should think about maybe building some sort of platform on one side to stand on. But super cool!

It is an amazing experience. We visited the place a few days ago, and we weren't able to purchase a spray paint from the caravan because it was too late already, but anyway we had a lot of fun.
I admire the person who created these structures. Go and visit it !

I have been here twice now over the last 5 years. It's a classic stop on route 66. It has been reworked since the last visit. The turnstile is gone and the road leading out has been improved. If you come here, don't leave your garbage behind. If you intend to not pick up after yourself, don't visit the site. This is private land and can be closed to the public at any time. Last year I read an article that it may be removed soon. So that's the point to my second visit. Got some new photos. Overall, it's a must see that I hope lives on for years to come, but it sounds as if it's mabey on borrowed time.

When I finally arrived here, my first thought was, “did I really drive all this way for cars sticking out of the ground?” I thought, surely there must be more than this. There was not. You park your car on the side of the road, get out and walk through a gate, then way down a dirt entryway are these cars in the ground. Granted, you can bring spray paint and paint to your hearts content, but I brought none. But man did I get some great shots! The clouds came out to play that day! I would say this is a one and done kind of attraction. Fun but no need to go back a second time. Glad I did it though!

If you're passing through this area, I'd highly recommend a quick stop here. The walk to the cars isn't that far from where you have to park. There was a person on site selling spray paint if you wanted to paint the cars yourself. All in all, you probably don't need more than 20-30 minutes here.

Such a quirky, unusual experience! I wish they would add to it. The parking area, the fence, is so cool! Vendor truck with spray paint and souvenirs sits at the gate. You can see for miles and it's windy.

This is a free, iconic visual of history in America. Cadillac Ranch is set back, off highway 40 and does not seem like a worthwhile effort. But, we took the time out to visit and were happy that we did. Classic Cadillacs set out, buried in the ground are a tribute to the vehicles and roads that made America. They are heavily painted allowing visitors to place themselves as part of that history. Spray paint cans are freely available. There is a small, affordable vendor on-site selling memorabilia. There is some walking involved on rutted dirt surface and only Porta potties for restrooms.
I highly recommend taking the hour or so to visit, it was worth the time.

First attempt to go see this place was on a whim at 9 at night. There were about 10 cars along road but there are no lights at night! We could see many flashlights in the distance, but decided to play it safe and waited til next morning. Huge surprise to 40 to 50 cars and tour busses! This was a follow in the foot steps my dad had visited so the experience was fabulous! Be prepared that if you paint, it will be painted over quick! Take pictures. It was amazing to see all the different types of people, young to older. Awsome place!

Cool place, but would recommend going when it is dry and sunny. I went the day after some rain, the whole thing was a muddy pit. Definitely a worthwhile icon of Amarillo, and would recommend to those who haven't gone. Just go when it is warm and sunny.

This was a cool little put stop off highway 40 / old66. They have 10 old caddillacs buried in the dirt, lined up for people to graffiti all over. There is a truck when you arrive selling spray paint so you can have your fun. The things people spray aren't really art, some have talent. The art is the layers and layers of paint built up, dripping or melting off that male up the real art. It would be nice to see what they look liked originally. The streets and walls around the highway are ulled with graffiti too. There are locks hanging on the gates front what people left behind, everything covered with color. There is nothing else around but dirt and those old cars.
Mar1 Lyn — Google review
You park along the side of the road, and it's hard to miss with all the spray paint cans, painted roads, and painted barricades. There was a truck there that was like a food truck but sold souvenirs, spray paint, and other odds and ends! The spray paint was somewhere around $6 a can, so it's pretty fair prices. I recommend fluorescent colors! Also wear old clothes because you will get paint on you!! They seem to pop the best.
Please throw your spray paint cans away!!! There's so many laying around the ground when trash cans are available in multiple places.
Tiffani Hawkinberry — Google review
Had to see this place on my route 66 road trip, and it was just as good as I thought it would be. They had a truck and trailer set up with a shop, and you could get paint, stickers, and post cards, among other things, all in one place! I didn't buy any paint, but someone leaving gave me their unused paint can, and I passed it on after I was done. All in all, I would go again.

Not as big as I thought it'd be but very cool spot! It was sad to see how much trash people have left behind. People were so nice to share the spray cans they brought with others around them.

This is such an iconic place to visit so I’m glad I went while I was in town. We got some cool pictures out of it but honestly it was pretty underwhelming. The cars were pretty far from the place you had to park and it’s crazy windy so the walk isn’t fun. There’s always extra half-empty cans of spray paint lying around so don’t feel the need to bring any of your own. The actual cars were cool but I wish there was some sort of plaque or bit of info given to make me feel like my trip was somewhat educational rather than me just walking out into a field in the middle of nowhere to see some cars sticking out of the ground.
Emma Gehring — Google review
Making our way across the country, Cadillac Ranch is an iconic stop! We were there on a cool, windy day, and there were lots of people walking around, taking photos and a few artists with their paint cans. One parks on a side road and it’s a long walk to the display. There’s a gate, and it’s possible to get a wheelchair thru, though the ground is uneven and a bit rough.
Tatiana Hoover — Google review
Surprisingly busy location! Plenty of parking along the road, but lots of people come here to see these caddies buried nose down. You can buy spray paint from a guy on site, contributing your own guerrilla art to the cars, the concrete barrier separating the site from the freeway, or even the road surface.
mossum — Google review
The cool thing about this is all the people painting the cars, the paint gets so thick that it slides off. The local artist collects the paint that slides off and makes art out of it. Some even make earrings that are very colorful and unique. The visitors center for Route 66 Amarillo has the earrings and can tell you the rest of the places where the art can be bought. This is a free spot to stop (unless you buy paint on site) and enjoy with the kids. The kids were laughing, running and having a great time. It was fun watching them.
Great place to stop! We initially only stopped for gas, snacks and a few souvenirs, which they did have a great selection of snacks, drinks and souvenirs. Once inside we realized they had a museum as well, which though we were short on time definitely decided to make the most out of our stop and enjoy. Very informative! We loved all the cars on display plus things of the days gone by! Very lovely stop! Store and restrooms were clean and well maintained, staff were friendly! Will stop again if we are in the area!

Great stop along the way. Free antique and car museum right there inside the gas station. They do except donations but there was no pressure into doing so. Reasonably priced for a gas station but keep in mind it is a convenience store so prices are a little marked up compared to a normal grocery store.

Was driving cross country and stopped for a break. One hour here was just not enough time to see everything. This is a wonderful stop to take a break, buy some goods. They have plenty: from snacks to clothes to souvenirs and health & beauty items. The dining area is spotless and resembles a dining car from years gone by. The museum...filled with absolutely beautiful classic cars and other things. Russell's is really like an OASIS in the desert. Worth going out of you way to see and perhaps have a bite to eat while there.

I love that it’s free but if you can drop something in the donation box; donations go to families in need. On this night a heavy rain storm came through so we decided to stay overnight. Plenty of parking. The diner staff was friendly and provided good service even though it was busy and they were only 2 wait staff! Bummed I ate my burger & forgot to take a pic but it was delicious! Russell Truck and Travel Center in New Mexico is an unexpected gem on the highway. Not only is it a convenient stop for travelers, but it also boasts a unique car museum that adds an extra layer of excitement to your journey.
The car museum at Russell Truck and Travel Center is a delightful surprise. It's like stepping back in time to explore the history of automobiles. The collection showcases a diverse range of vehicles, from classic cars to vintage trucks, each with its own story to tell. The well-maintained displays and informative plaques provide a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of automotive engineering and design.
The convenience of this travel center is equally impressive. It's a one-stop destination for refueling, grabbing a bite to eat, and stretching your legs during a long road trip. The staff is friendly and efficient, making your pit stop as pleasant as possible.
What truly sets Russell Truck and Travel Center apart is its commitment to the traveler's experience. They've turned a routine rest stop into an opportunity for exploration and education. Whether you're a car enthusiast or just looking for a convenient place to break your journey, Russell Truck and Travel Center is a must-visit on your highway adventure through New Mexico.

If this was on your bucket list, better do it now. Awesome place full of raw american culture. Unfortunately, its been sold to TA. Things have already been rebranded inside. I asked the cashier about the future of the place and she said the museum will be gone in 5 years. Expect all paid parking, expensive showers, and fast food in a couple years. Im sure all of the museum stuff will be sold off over time. Better check the place out or revisit before its too late. Got emotional walking through the museum today knowing it was destined to be removed.

Not sure how I feel about TA taking over but glad to see the museum is still. Loving taking the kids there every few years we pass through.
Mr. Flint still mans the desk and was kind enough to hand my 6 year old and 2 year old some little stuffed animals.

A must stop along the 40.
Grasslands with many dinosaur footprints & areas for camping, fishing & hiking (open seasonally).
Had a great stay at the Clayton Lake Campground as we passed through on our way to Colorado. The park is beautiful and well kept. The sites are well spaced with plenty of privacy. We stayed on the non-electric loop and basically had the entire loop to ourselves. Plenty quiet and I don't think I've ever seen so many stars in my life. Waking up in the morning and taking the walk out to see the Dinosaur Tracks was just icing on the cake of an awesome place to stay.

Spot was pretty level. Long enough for truck and travel trailer but not much else. Our spot (E2) was a very tight turn.

Camped here one night mid April 2021 was 29'F at the crack of dawn. Dinosaur tracks were somewhat visible, a few were clear others weren't as clear. I few of the interpretive signs as to what the scientists saw were down right laughable, CLEARLY they were reading into stuff that just WAS NOT really there. If your profession is to study dinosaur tracks you don't get many chances to do that, so I will give them a break.

Beautiful park setting in kinda the middle of nowhere. Went in early November and plenty of fall color left. Snowed a little bit too but just enough to be pleasant.
Pros: Scenic relatively short drive from the town of Clayton, NM. Beautiful views over the water with a nice rocky edge. Friendly park Ranger and some nice campgrounds, some primitive and some with electric and water and moderately priced. There is a fun 1/2 mile in and out short hike to the far side of lake and some bonifide ancient preserved dinosaur tracks. Had zero Verizon coverage there. Very quiet and peaceful.
Cons: bathrooms and especially the showers could use a remodel. Ranger station could use an update with some nicer features.
Overall totally worth a visit and a nice peaceful spot to campout.

Hidden gem outside of Clayton NM. Prices for daily parking is about 5.00 to visit the Dino tracks. It’s a 1/2 mile walk to the site and back. On a hill, but easy to walk. Lake is clean and beautiful

Be sure to leave daylight enough to spend time looking thoughtfully at all the dinosaur tracks--it takes a few minutes to "learn how to see" the footprints, and the signs are helpful. Worth the detour from 60 if you are passing through the Clayton area.

We decided to stop here on our way up to CO to see the dinosaur tracks and they were actually really awesome. Luckily we went after it had been raining a lot so they were the most visible but we did hear that when it's been really dry, sometimes the dirt slightly covers them so you can't seem them as clearly. Either way, the park has a nice set up with a wooden pathway to walk through and information along the way. Definitely worth it if you're in the area or wanting to go camp and spend some time. The park itself is also gorgeous so I wish we could've been there an entire day but the couple of hours we did make it was completely worth it!

Wonderful experience! The trail to the dinosaur footsteps is well maintained and only 1/4 mile. Pretty view of the lake with lots of large fish jumping! The campground is small and the sites are very close together. However, it was a very quiet evening. Would definitely go back!

I really enjoyed this campsite by the lake! Beautiful lakeviews right beside the RV park as well as a quarter mile hiking trail over to the dinosaur tracks area. Dog friendly as long as they're on a leash. Nice and quiet off the beaten path away from town.
Hookups included. Power and water. No dump site available. They did have restrooms on site.
If I'm ever in this area again I will come back to this campground..

We came across the border into New Mexico and decided to camp for a few days. Used Google maps and saw that Clayton Lake was close. At first on the way there, I didnt think I was on the right road. Very few signs. We came upon the entrance and could not believe our eyes. This is a hidden oasis! We could not believe our eyes. The state rangers were all very nice and accomadating. Everyone in the park was friendly and very polite. Kids in other camps seem to have a great time as well. The park has showers, bathrooms, water and electrical spots, and your more rustic sites. Every site we looked at had fantastic view. And I mean just phenominal...
I suggest that anyone close or even far, should go to Clayton Lake State Park! You will be very happy you did. Promise you!

Nice quiet park. The town of Clayton must be the most heavily patrolled town I have ever seen, not sure why. The campground is beautiful. It's off-putting, a little oasis on the corner of the desert. The Rangers of the park were quiet and respectful, and everything was well maintained and clean. A great respite after a tiresome journey.
This place is amazing, but it is not for the casual camper. First it is 9 miles on a good dirt road to get to the edge of the canyon. Then you have 4 miles drive down a narrow and steep at times dirt/rock road to the valley floor. The campsites are great. They are clean and have a table, fire pit and grill. There are also very nice, clean toilets. However, there is no water available of any kind. There is also no power if you need it and shade is sparce. A pop up canopy is a great addition especially in the summer months. It can get very hot during the day in the canyon. Bring a couple of gallons of water per person per day. There isn't any good river access and in the summer the river is not flowing or inviting. The ruins are interesting and the canyon is spectacular. There are old roads you can use to hike on but there is not a formal trial system. Don't expect to see people either so you need to be ok being alone in the wilderness with no cell signal. Labor Day weekend there was only one other party in the entire park.

Beautiful spot for free camping! Large campsites with picnic tables, grills, fire pits and stalls for horses. Clean bathrooms (no running water.) This canyon is a true hidden gem. Yes, the reviews are true. It's a bit of a trek getting down into the canyon. Has a sign that says RVs and Trailers are not recommended. From pavement to the campsites is over 5 miles at least. There are a few hiking trails, old settlement buildings, and information panels for the canyon. Very well maintained area with very clean vault toilets. This is primitive camping, meaning no water or electricity, so be sure to plan accordingly to enjoy this beautiful place.

Camped by the river on 31 May 23. Only person in the canyon. Sign on the bulletin board said they were considering adding a fee, but it was dated 2022. No fee yet. Good campsites with fire pits, grills and tables. Better have an ATV/4WD if you plan to drive down to the valley campground. Good luck getting a trailer down there, too. The upper campground should be accessible to almost all vehicles, and it has corrals in some of the campsites. There was only 1 vehicle in that campground when I drove through. Worth a slight detour to visit and learn some local history. Beautiful location. Wish I had time to hike some of the trails. Thanks for a great campground!

First trip here. Road is definitely a little nerve racking but well worth it. No campfires 🔥 were allowed but still had a great time. Ended up being pretty full but was Easter weekend. Toilets were clean and well stocked.

Perfect for a night, vault bathrooms are clean as are the campsites

Upper campground is very dry and windswept. Several sites have covered corrals. The road down is an adventure, but no real problems. But it is quite a bit further down and further along, to the bottomland campground. Several miles, the first two being real doozies. The campsites at the bottom are nowhere near the river. A scramble through snake infested underbrush for about 40 yards will get you to the river bank.

Very nice campground. It takes a while to get there and the road is bumpy so if you don’t have high clearance, drive slowly. The canyon is also real pretty.

I stop here every time I drive across the country. Epically beautiful, generally pretty solitary. If you run into anybody, they're guaranteed to be very interesting.
Warning: the sign at the mouth of the canyon road says "RVs not recommended" I would venture to say that no wheeled vehicle save for a 4-wheeler is recommended, it is very rough and full of switchbacks. There's actually an old Rv trailer that fell into the canyon wedged between some rocks along the path.
National park featuring a dormant volcano with hiking trails around the base & in the crater.
This is definitely worth a visit. If you are going by on the I-25, its not that far a detour to go. The whole area is fantastic with little craters and peaks. The drive up the volcano is lovely, with amazing views. Once you get to the top, the hiking trail around the rim is a must do, but it is quite strenuous. However its worth it for the views. This really is an amazing landscape and really unique.
The visitor center is nice and the staff are friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed our visit here.

It’s a nice easy drive to the top. Expect high winds. Really great views, but I don’t recommend hiking the rim in 60 mph winds. Inside the bottom of the crater was nice, but not the views for 50 miles

Capulin Volcano National Monument is a unique and fascinating destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. The volcano is an ancient cinder cone volcano that offers a great hike to the rim, and the views are spectacular. The visitor center is a great starting point to learn about the volcano's geology and history. The park staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. I highly recommend a visit to Capulin Volcano National Monument for anyone looking for a unique outdoor experience. The park also offers great opportunities for bird watching and wildflower viewing.

I have been wanting to stop here for decades. I finally did it, and it was better than expected. I showed up at 8:30 on a clear morning. I hiked the rim and into the crater. Such amazing views, especially with the snow covered mountains in the background. Really cool.
I enjoyed watching the deer run around in the crater.

How often do you get to drive to the top of a volcano, get out and hike the rim or go down into the vent? Stunning views. Rocky mountains to the north and volcanoes and lava flows to the west.
Staff at the center are awesome and very knowledgeable. Say hi and learn about the area.

Great place for a quick hike around a volcano. I highly recommend the short walk down to the crater. We would to have loved to have hiked some other trails (like the rim of the volcano) but the wind was out of control the day we went.
The drive to the crater is kind of intense as you drive the mildly windy road with a drop off and hardly any guardrails…though the scenic views of New Mexico are picturesque and worth it!
Can be a quick trip and hike down to the crater, just a drive up to the crater, or a day trip spent hiking and exploring the volcano.

Beautiful place to stop along the drive through New Mexico. Unplanned stop but so glad we saw it in passing! If you have kids with you make sure to do the Jr. Rangers program for a badge. Fun drive up to the volcano and super cool hikes down inside and around the rim. Loved it here!

On a road trip, I saw the sign and had to stop. I was unprepared for this and could not make the hike in good faith (no shoes/water/sunblock readily accessible) but very happy I stopped by.
You check in at the visitor center to show your pass and collect a map and then drive to the top parking lot where two trails are easily marked and ready. They post the estimated time to hike and if you come prepared, the views would be amazing. The pictures posted are readily accessible to anyone and worth the trip.

This is one of my favorite places that I never expected to encounter. Found this in passing while I was driving to visit my son in Colorado. A freaking volcano in New Mexico!
This was my second trip to the volcano! There is a trail that takes you down to the volcano vent and another trail that takes you around the rim. Both are very steep and will give your legs and lungs a workout!
That said, the views are amazing and worth the burn!
Jeremy Harpley — Google review
Great stop before you get to Colorado! 20 dollars to get in but if you're a vet or have a National Park pass it's free! We enjoyed it so much we came twice in one vacation! The rim trail is 1 mile long and a great leg stretcher! We stopped at the ranger station and checked out the video and history on the volcano! We enjoyed it!

Great area to explore. The office has a gift shop, museum, and a theatre for viewing the history of the area. The employees were friendly and informative. I had to buy a t-shirt as they have nice designs. Wear good shoes for hiking. It is right off the highway a couple miles. Lige is too short to pass up the history of our planet. God Bless, from the little blue jeep

There's a trail around the rim of this dormant volcano that's well worth the effort involved in taking the one mile walk. It's steep and the air is thin, so take your time. The views of the crater and the surrounding lava field / plains are incredible.

We’d never visited a volcano before and saw the signs off the highway on our way back from Trinidad. Very friendly staff. Drive up the volcano and took the short trail down. Easy going down but for those not in shape, it is a hard trek back up. Because of that, we didn’t get to hike the rim trail. We did love what we saw though. Very interesting. Would love to come back and do the longer trail next time.

Capulin Volcano is a hidden gem for those seeking a serene escape into nature's embrace. My recent visit during the winter season left me enchanted by the tranquility and beauty of this natural wonder.
Despite being the off-season, the park was not busy, allowing for an intimate exploration of its breathtaking landscapes. The snow-covered trails painted a picture-perfect scene, transforming Capulin Volcano into a winter wonderland straight out of a storybook.
What truly made my visit memorable was the warm welcome and hospitality extended by the Park Ranger on duty.
Navigating the park's trails looked like a delight, but it was too icy to attempt the small hikes. From the rim of the volcano, I marveled at the vast expanse of the dormant crater below, a testament to the earth's raw power and beauty.
As I ventured deeper into the park, I couldn't help but feel a profound sense of peace and wonder wash over me. The crisp winter air, the silence broken only by the occasional rustle of wildlife, created a sense of harmony with nature that is truly unparalleled.
My visit to Capulin Volcano was nothing short of extraordinary. Whether you're a nature enthusiast seeking solace in the great outdoors or simply looking to immerse yourself in the beauty of winter, Capulin Volcano offers an unforgettable experience that will leave you in awe. A heartfelt thank you to the Park Ranger for their hospitality and dedication to preserving this natural treasure for future generations to enjoy.

Beautiful place. I was only passing through, but decided to stop and see. I drove right up to the entrance and realized it was $20 to get in to see it. Seemed silly, as I was already looking at it and had been for 15 minutes while I drove there. I got out and walked around a little and did some meditating, and had a great experience. It’s probably a lot better if you pay to get in, but I had a great time there anyway!

It has been quite a while since we were here but we love this park and want to go back. There are hiking trails down into the volcano as well as along the rim. Be prepared for extreme winds on the rim. Some of the trail is completely exposed and the sudden gusts could make you lose balance. The views here are absolutely beautiful. You can drive part way up the volcano to a parking lot where there are restrooms. This provides amazing views and you may see some wildlife. We arrived as the park was opening and saw several mule deer on our drive up. We also saw a herd of Pronghorn ib the distance. The hike around the rim is definitely worth the effort. There is a visitor center that has some souvenirs and restrooms. There is no camping here. Definitely worth a visit.

A fantastic day trip with several relatively short trails around lava flows, the crater rim, and down into the crater. The views from the crater rim are breathtaking and the hike down into the crater is an interesting experience.
The roadway to the top only has a few spots with guard rails, but it did not feel unsafe. Drive carefully and enjoy the views once you’re on the top.
Overall, I would highly recommend a detour here on a road trip.
Evan Zimmerman — Google review
Absolutely beautiful views from the top of the Volcano. You can walk the top rim all the way around and even down to the bottom of the crater. Walking the rim is a 45-90 minute walk, and the crater path is 20-40 minutes. Totally worth the $20 a vehicle to go to the top.

Amazing views! Breathtaking! We got to the top around 3:15. They cut the trails off at 4:15. We were able to circle the mile long crater loop in 30 mins. It has an elevation change of 305ft.
The trail to the bottom of the crater is .2 miles & a change of 105ft. Bring water & a something for your hair, it's windy.
The Crown Jewel of the Scouting program!! So much history and so many young people have hiked here and have taken life long memories back with them. Philmont is a unique experience. My family has been involved with scouting for many years and my wife, Daughter and Son have all been participants and have such great experiences. My daughter was so impressed she worked there for 3 summers. My Son also did a Rayado experience. he now works at Northern Tier and has for the last 4 years. This truly is a fantastic and growth filled experience! Each member of your trek will grow on this adventure!!

If you have a scout and you want to give your scout a life experience, a chance to grow in spirit and into the person that they may become. The hike builds self confidence , self reliance and most of all it builds the scout knowledge of the many jobs they may find themselves performing in thier future. And as in my case test the scouts nerve and inteligency . while at Philemont 3 or 4th day in. I was giving a cooking class and one of the items on the. Menue was a apple pie in a Dutch oven. A few minuets into the meal. We heard loud banging of pans and people yelling I looked up at the group of about 15 scouts that were facing me I could tell by thier expressions something was wrong and I jokingly asked There's a bear behind me isn't there? All of the guys slowly and altogether shook thier heads yes. I slowly moved around the table I was preparing food on. And there about 25 ft.away was a large 400 to 425lbs cinnamon bear. I looked down there was the 3lb bag of apples. Slowly I retrieved the bag. Then I told the scouts if I get his attention I want you all to slowly start down the hill side to the rangers station about a mile away. I threw the first apple it hit the bear on the head bounced off behind it.the best stopped nose up in the air and followed to the apple. It sat and began eating it. I threw about her further behind it then about her soon I had one apple left I.looked all the scouts where gone and I took that moment to slowly start towards the rangers station myself. I saw the bear look at me so I threw the last apple. Pulled my knife cut the rope that was holding our food stored up in a bear bag in a tree and I took off running. Don't know when but by the time I reached the rangers station I had somehow passed the others and beat them down the hillside. Later the rangers had to kill the bear the noise we had heard earlier was when the same bear had come into a campsite and do to candy in a tent a scout had been bitten and severely hurt.
I found my calling that summer I completed my Eagle scout and after finished school I became a law Enforcement officer and had a career That. Philmount truely helped me find.I got to spend my life being there to help and care for my community and knew that if I could face a bear with just a bag of apples facing any situation from that moment on would be easy. And with training and the unity scouting builds in to scouts I was able to use those lessons to build commodity with all the officers I was so blessed to have worked with. Protecting, serving and being a active member of my dept. City community and this wonderful nation despite its political turmoil. When tradgity strikes unity stands tall.in America.
Proud to stand with my brothers and sisters first responders not only fighting a war but continuing to perform thier duties . from the fire fighters EMS and police to thier president.
Ukrain is fighting a war to save Democracy throughout the world.

There is nothing like Philmont - nothing. It's the pinnacle of the Scouting program and the highlight of many scouts' childhoods - my own included. I will always remember my trek (13-7-12-D2) in vivid detail. It was one of the most difficult things I did growing up - living off my back for 12 days - but one of the most rewarding. It took the suburban city boy in me out into the wilderness in a way that no other Scouting experience can. It's hard to isolate what exactly made it so memorable - there was so much. Climbing Baldy and the Tooth, making it to camp just before the thunder and rain rolled in several days in a row, carrying everything you need on your back, and being in a place where cell phones, if we even had them, just didn't work.
Scouts who might be reading this - please, please, please do everything you can to make it out for a trek at Philmont. It doesn't matter who you are - Philmont will make you a better version of yourself in ways you won't imagine, and in ways you won't fully appreciate until years later. It's worth the sacrifice to come out, experience the backcountry, and earn the arrowhead patch.
I'll be back some day. Until then, IWGBTP!

Great place and all that, just keep in mind if you are planning to go there that the gear in the store is relatively cheap, at least compared to the gear in stores that sell similar items. I would recommend waiting until you get there to buy the gear to save a few hundred dollars

Most memorable experience of my life. Went there in early July of this year and it's really an unforgettable experience. This is some of the most strenuous terrain in the country. Me and my crew endured 72 miles of these mountains throughout 12 days.
If you're planning on going here, I suggest adding Mt. Baldy to your itinerary.

Philmont was a great experience for me, and I'm sure it would be for any other scout looking for high adventure. I attended the NAYLE (National Youth Leadership Experience) course here, and it was a lot of fun, as well as pointing me in the right direction to improve my leadership skills. I do wish more control was given to the scouts and less teaching was done for scouts with high adventure experience, but the trip was still beneficial. Not to mention the great veiws.

The greatest high adventure camp for Scouts, period. I've been here twice, and I was extremely impressed with the quality of the scenery, the facilities, and most importantly the staff. It doesn't get any better. I will be back, and my son will be in a few years. I'm hopeful that he will want to work on staff.

Called.Disneyland for hikers there is a lot to see here. While you can't go into the back country, you can tour the Villa Philmont built by Waite Phillips in the 1920s before he donated the land to the Boy Scouts and visit the Rayado camp that was a homestead and stop along the Santa Fe trail. Then visit the Seton Museum. Before you leave stop at the Tooth of Time trading post at base camp to pick up outdoor gear or souvenirs. Best of all there is no cost for the tours. Make reservations before you go.

I have had two great treks here! Unfortunately the quality of the closing ceremony was cringy at best. I have many good memories here and tons of fantastic photos. Everyone should come here once if you're into scouting and the outdoors. My bus to pick up my crew from the trail was late so we missed the lunch at Basecamp.
Two lakes for fishing & boating, plus camping, hiking & views on the site of a historic coal camp.
One of my favorite state parks. Peaceful and not over crowded, plenty of trails for hikes long and short, or just a nice place to sit by the lake.

We have stayed at Lake Alice campground 3 times in the past 4 years and have enjoyed each stay!
Pros:
-Beautiful area with trails and lake nearby
-Somewhat secluded so no city/road noise
-Tent sites have a fire ring, table, bear box-water spigot is found near entrance
-Vault bathrooms were clean
-Camphosts were informative and super nice
-Showers
Cons:
-Sites are close together, therefore you may hear the noise of your neighbors and RVs.
-No cell reception
Tips:
-There are few sites so book early.
-Bring bug spray, mosquitoes and biting flies were present in early September
-Be cautious of wild animals, we had a cougar growl at us while hiking a nearby trail.
-Buy firewood beforehand, didn't see any for sale at the park
-Site 16 is a big site! Room for multi tents

Each lot has a covered picnic table & trashcans to lockup (bears). There are some restrooms available & some great hiking. There is NO CELL SERVICE (AT&T). We smelled a few skunks. We can't wait to try this place out!

A family favorite to stop by this beautiful park. The hiking trails in the south end are very pleasant for beginners. On the north end by the lake, a bit more challenging but well worth the effort. The lakes are surrounded by the terrain, so you have to work hard to not appreciate how beautiful this place is.

Just breathtaking trails, 22 miles of them, that wind all around the area. Sites and trails were clean and managed. While I was there, they had no drinkable water and the showers were closed. Additionally, there is no cell coverage unless you bring your own satellite equipment.

Came for a small hike and was not disappointed. Ours was a late afternoon hike on the Wapiti trail located just east of Malaya Lake. Nice parking area. the first 250 yards was moderately steep but as soon as you get to the first "y" trailer marker... go right. Left would be the greater incline going up. The trail was freshly groomed and well marked but was still a beautiful and natural feeling. My complement to the park staff. Great views and great weather. Didn't see any bears but did see many signs of recent bears in the woods deposits (f you get what I mean). Great views overall and of the lake below!

This was our first stop on our NM State Park tour, October 2023.
We stayed in Lake Alice campground. Only 12 sites. Weekend, sites were full. Weekdays, people leave early morningby 1-5pm, RVers are arriving. Probably 75% full midweek.
We got a full hookup site, 38 Renegade Valencia. 30 amp only. Theres a water boil notice. Fine for toilets, showers.
Several sites are large enough for 35-40 with a tow vehicle unhooked. Parked in front of the site.
Staff were fantastic and offers wood for sale daily. Quietest State Park I have ever been too! We camped at Sugarite Canyon State Park in a Motorhome.

This campground is several miles outside of Raton NM. We planned on Kayaking and were able to, but the campground we chose was up a rough, two mile road, from the main road. It wasit was a major hassle getting up and down that UNMAINTAINED road to get to our campsite. Once you got to the main road it was a mile to the lake. Showers were a mile in the other direction. Unfortunately I did not get the name of the extremely rude ranger, who when my husband jokingly asked about his uniform responded with, "call the governor if you have a complaint". Beautiful park, just needs attention and staff who care.

Very sweet spot to enjoy the night sky. If you don’t get your choice of camping spaces, bring a canopy because not all spots have full shade. It was also cool to drive into Colorado while exploring the park. Cleanest vault toilets I’ve ever used. The air freshener was an adorable touch. Very blessed to get to enjoy the free camp showers. The very best part of this park, I had absolutely zero cell service. We stayed here to try to get used to the altitude slowly & it did help. Oh and there’s about a million hummingbirds here, watch out, they definitely get in your personal space. The only downside is the RVs that will have their generator on at 5am. But the sweet camp hosts made up for that for sure. We did take the opportunity to go to Capulin volcano which was a nice scenic drive or a quick highway drive, dealers choice. The scenic drive allows for you to see Johnson church & the small town of Folsom. Given the opportunity, I will be back again.

Absolutely loved this out of the way State Park. It's so close to Raton, but most people don't know it's there. 2 great fishing lakes. A couple great campgrounds, and showers!. I've stopped here on my way back home from camping above treeline in Colorado just to get a shower. Sota Camp ground, site 2 & 3 are the best with good tree cover but near open meadows where the Elk and Deer graze.
There are old sites to explore from the mining town that used to be here. Lots of history and trails to follow.
I even saw a black bear while exploring the old town site.

Nice stay for the price. Our 30’ travel trailer with 2 slides and pick up truck just barely fit. Water at spicket had a notice to boil if you’re drinking it. $14 for water and electricity with nice fire pit and picnic table make this place a bargain. Zero cell phone service but we used Starlink which worked fine.

Trinidad Lake SP, is a great little park with great views. Some sites have full hookups, but for the rest we have 50 Amps, there is water in the area, mine was 225 feet away, lucky me I carry that much hose! Very quiet. It was during some rain storms that we visited so it’s a bit cloudy looking but nice park. There is a short 1 mile trail that will take you by the water and there is an 8 mile to and from trail that leaves the park area so there is plenty of opportunity for a nice hike from camp.

Family of 8 stayed in the South Shore Campground. The shade/shelter over the picnic table helped cut the wind and offered a nice place to eat. Ground was bumpy, no pad for tents.
I hadn't read the fine print and the vault toilets were gross, but we made it. Drove over to the campground on the bluff to take showers. Clean and easy to use.
Make sure you take cash for quarters to use the shower.
Lovely view of the lake and the mountain range. Cooled off nicely at night and warmed back up when the sun rose. Mid-July is a nice time to visit.
Great place to stay one night. Wouldn't want to stay much longer with a bunch of little kids. No playground or swimming area.

One night of tent camping allowed us to take in the beautiful scenery, including the sun set. While I didn't have a boat or fishing gear, wading in the cool lake water was enjoyable. Pay showers is an interesting concept but a nice option if needed. I'm not sure why soap wasn't provided in the restrooms.

We travel full time & staying in NM. Came here to explore & it's beautiful. Another great place with great views. We thought about camping on the South side. We have a 41' 5th wheel. There are 2 good spots, out of the 10, for a rig that size. They have water onsite & restrooms.

If you're wanting just a quick weekend escape to a lake this is definitely a great spot. The waters are a beautiful turquoise blue, and they allow fishing, kayaking, paddle boarding, jet skies, boats and camping. The park rangers are super friendly, and there are a few hiking trails. And for it being a state park, they have really nice outhouses. The only reason it's not a 5 star is i wish they had more lake access points, there's only 3 so the beaches got crowded really fast, having to paddle board around the fishers isn't very fun.

This is a great state park in Colorado to camp at and also to just do a day trip to. Lots of covered concrete park benches with good barbecue pits to use. The camping areas or for another part that you don’t feel like you’re on top of other campers. The scenery is beautiful and there are some good hiking trails. Definitely recommend this place.

Quiet camping areas with fire pits and shelter from the afternoon/evening sun. Dried plant life/tree branches available near the road for small fires. Great place for kayaking, paddle boarding, fishing, boating and floating. Trout, salmon and bass available for catching. Dump station and water is at a different camp area away from South shore. Walmart is nearby (15 mi) in case you forgot anything.

The park itself is really cool. The trails are scenic and each trail has a different viewpoint. They all had a good variety of elevation changes but nothing too extreme. Could use a few more benches/rocks to rest.
The campground was okay, the sites were close together & the tent pads are small. The campground does not include the day pass. They also charge for showers, 25 cents a minute & the quarter machine was broken. The price for camping wasn't worth what the campground offers. It should of at least included the day pass.

Really nice state park register online before going, lower sites that overlook the lake were closed for the season. Very clean restrooms/showers, bring quarters or cash for the change machine. Very dark at night which was perfect for star gazing, sites were large and private some not so level. I would have disconnected from the truck if we were staying a few days.
The Shrine of the Stations of the Cross, located near the Blood of Christ Mountains, features 15 life-sized statues depicting scenes from Jesus's crucifixion. The sculptures are spread along a 1-mile pathway that offers visitors a chance to take a leisurely walk and reflect on each station. The trail is relatively easy, with some elevation gain, but it provides beautiful views and resting spots along the way.
Easy hike up to the church but the stars of the show are the fabulous 15 stages of the cross Passion) bronze statues. All so expressive and stunning. The views from the top are stunning. Shame there’s no information about the church itself and its origins

Must start at the bottom accessible from the highway to begin at the 1st Station. You can drive up a dirt road to the chapel where the 15th Station is (Resurrection added) but if you want to do the Stations in order you will have to walk down. The path is gravel, very easy trail and the whole journey is probably less than a half mile.

This place is beautiful. Not a terribly difficult walk, but bring water! Definitely bring a camera. Plan on taking some time to enjoy not only the bronze sculptures, the station plaques, the path, but turn around every now and then and take in the breathtaking scenery of the valley. The church at the top is a sanctuary to cool down before your descent. Not to be missed. This is a treasure.

20-minute climb at a steady walk to view the church. Peaceful beautiful view. The various statues are moving.

I wish I'd had more time to walk all the stations. The crucifixion/resurrection sculptures were beautiful and the chapel had an old-west mission, reverential vibe to it. Great views from the chapel and trail. Will return to catch the whole station trail.

We visited around noon and did not realize the walk would end up ascending 140 ft in elevation. It is a very pleasant hike and easy enough for most people as they have places to sit along the way if needed. The sculptures are incredible and it is worth the visit. The restroom at the top is not functioning so I recommend stopping at the visitor center across the street prior to your visit.

The 3/4 mile walk up to the chapel, viewing the several bronze sculptures of the Stations of the Cross along the path, is very worthwhile and, for many, would be very moving. It's pretty much the thing to do in San Luis. Do it in a cool part of the day as the path is in full sun. The handsome little chapel is very pleasant inside and a nice bonus.
This is a hidden gem! It is a must see place for anyone interested in contemporary American counterculture art. You could spend days exploring the permanent exhibition on the 2nd floor. And the curators are great storytellers. They personally knew and/or are friends with each artist represented here. If you wanna know what was happening in the American counterculture art in 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond, you should see this place.

This is a delightful local museum with a lot of eclectic art. They also run a children's art program, where the kids get to paint planter boxes to put out in front of the museum. There's also a nice colorful mural across the road in the park. The tour was very informative and surprisingly they even have an entire room devoted to native Hawaiian art! We enjoyed visiting very much.
As far as the guy complaining about the elevator...well, it's a very small elevator with a CLEARLY posted sign stating that the maximum allowed is 8 people or 1400 pounds. With how big Americans are...well, just saying if you overloaded the elevator and got stuck, that's your fault. Chances are by doing that you cost the museum quite a lot of money in repairs.

The Museum of Friends is an extraordinary gem that beautifully celebrates the power of art. From the moment we stepped through its doors, we were captivated by the vibrant energy and the inspiring collection that awaited us.
The first thing that struck us was the incredibly warm and inviting atmosphere. The staff at the Museum of Friends are friendly, knowledgeable, and passionate about the exhibits. Their enthusiasm is contagious and enhances the entire experience. Their dedication to preserving and sharing the stories behind each artwork truly shines through.
The museum showcases an impressive range of pieces from local artists and beyond, spanning various mediums and styles. No mater what your personal taste in art is, there's something for everyone to admire and appreciate. Each piece tells a unique story and offers a glimpse into the artist's creative journey.
In conclusion, the Museum of Friends in Walsenburg, Colorado, is a well worth the stop. With its impressive collection, welcoming atmosphere, and commitment to fostering connections, it is an absolute must-visit for anyone seeking an inspiring and uplifting cultural experience.

I found Maria and Brendt warm engaging and inspiring.
The MOF is a Radiant Cactus Flower in the Desert.
Their selfless dedication to integrating world renowned art and providing transitional opportunities for community service to local residents adds a whole new dimension to how art affects a community.
Everyone passing through Walsenburg should stop and visit MOF and be prepared to take the time to immerse your mind and soul to absorb the incredible art. The expansive and open exhibit lends itself to just stand and concentrate on the artist's vision and also drink in the the amount of patience and love manifested in each piece.
Brendt and Maria are a treasure trove of knowledge and are selfless in their dedication to bringing art to the desert and supporting the Walsenburg community. Your visit and donation to MOF will ensure Maria's and Brendt's legacy lives on.

What a breath of fresh air for Walsenburg!
What a terrific place to swing by for an hour or two and look at a very wide range of types of work in their permanent collection and any exhibits they have going on. Currently the exhibits are John Wark's Colorado Wildfires, Camille Seaman's Photographs of Our Polar Regions, Larry Racioppo's Hurricane Sandy exhibit and many more upstairs. What I found most interesting was seeing more history of the area besides more typical things Walsenburg is known for such as mining, the Coalfield, Battle of Walsenburg, etc.
Everyone who works here is fantastic! You see and hear the passion they have for the works on display. Hopefully, Maria is there, and you have extra time to learn about Miners Plaza Park directly across the street from them and whatever else she feels like sharing! In the alley behind their building and the alley behind the other buildings while walking north to Heritage Park are also loaded with art murals that are beautiful.
I'll definitely be returning for another visit.

This place is AMAZING. The first floor features traveling exhibits which are switched out every few months. The upper floor features a permanent collection and it is mind-blowingly amazing.
It felt like I was swimming in art.
Artists that I have heard of before, and many artists that I have never heard of before. A little local art, and a lot of New York art. You get a little taste of the Colorado communes from the '60s. Loads of fabulous printwork. Sculpture, pencil drawings, ink drawings, mixed media, collage, oils on canvas and other substrates, acrylics, photography, watercolor, even broken glass.
There's also one whole room devoted to Hawaii and Pacific island art and craft, and stepping foot into this room felt like I was catapulted into another world.
I can't believe that this quality, variety, and sheer volume of art is right here in downtown Walsenburg! Absolutely worth your while. You can book a tour through their website. Please be sure to make a monetary donation.

It's been exciting watching the influx of diverse cultures and creative spirit that has been building in Southern Colorado over the years, and I was super excited to finally stop by the Museum of Friends in Walsenburg after recently learning about it.
The museum is diverse, having three thoughtful exhibitions on display in the primary gallery floor, and the entire upper floor is filled with a stunning, massive collection of artwork from the myriad of friends for which the museum is named. Though we didn't explore too thoroughly, there is a lovely gift shop with a diverse, affordable collection of artworks and gifts near the entryway of the museum, as well as section selling art supplies that are otherwise impossible to find in the area.
We were so fortunate to have an opportunity to meet and chat with the owners and gallery director, who are deeply passionate about art and sharing their love with the world.
This is a very special place filled with the imaginative magic we need as human beings :) Nourish and treat yourself and your loved ones to the Museum of Friends!

We stumbled into this quaint little town and were bowled over to find a Contemporary Art Museum! The museum was between exhibits but we were able to get a sneak peak at the upcoming show. We were also able to take our time viewing the permanent collection on the second floor. The permanent collection is a truly amazing assemblage of contemporary art. Wow! This place is definitely worth a stop. A highlight of our drive home.
Very cool Historic Site!
I worked one summer for Fort Laramie NHS in Wyoming. It was supper cool to see some of the differences and a lot of the similarities between the two Forts. The guard house was the most striking difference. While not a good place to be at either Fort, Fort Garland's seemed a lot more tolerable place to be locked up.
Fort Garland has a lot of artifacts on display and good historical interpretation. My favorite was seeing Kit Carson's rifle!

This old fort turned museum was a great place to stretch our legs and learn some interesting things for just over an hour. There are some newer exhibits about Native Americans and the Buffalo Soldiers that used to live at and around the fort. A good and inexpensive stop if you're passing through.

My favorite museum visit in recent years!!
Amazing history and grounds with many different building and literally hundreds of first class display something for everyone even kids!

This cultural center has lots of reading material and intriguing stories portrayed through well maintained displays. We learned about how this military fort was strategically placed in the borderlands and was designed to coerce Indian tribes onto reservations. It’s also rich in the history of understanding the lesser known stories of Indigenous Tribes of Colorado, Buffalo Soldier, and Spanish land grant communities. They have extremely informative exhibits; you can tell that the museum does their best to convey these historical perspectives through “as true-to-life as possible” displays.

We would probably go again once the new native-focused exhibit is complete. In general, pretty good museum, especially for the price. Unless it's an event, I would not consider this super kid friendly for under 10. It's a lot of reading, very little interactivity. Most of the exhibits were really interesting and informative, but you can tell some of the information is definitely...outdated--including one 'n' word on a poster within the buffalo soldiers exhibit. That was really disappointing, especially as it's not even a direct quote. I think the museum should strongly consider removing. If we went again, I would book the tour in advance; it's only $3 but you can't get one without advance notice. If you go in winter/spring, dress warm! The buildings are drafty!

The fort has a lot of history. You can see how the soldiers lived on a daily basis while serving. Anyone interested in military history visiting Fort Garland should stop and take part in this site.

This is an authentic fort with an authentic history from the late 1800s much of that history is documented in the different buildings of the fort. It may surprise you to learn that this four is located in the middle of a plane with the ability to see for long distances and the ability to travel in multiple directions rather than at a strategic choke point. In its heyday it was a key intersection between settlers from the East and the traditional native people who lived in this area.

While this is a historic military fort strategically placed in the borderlands and purposed to genocidally coerice Indian tribes onto reservations, it is also rich in the history of understanding a lesser known stories of Colorado -Indigenous, Buffalo Soldier, Spanish land grant communities. Two amazing exhibits that contemporize these histories thru art.

Total suprise, wasn't expecting much when we stopped. Quality displays for the history of the fort. Really enjoyed the Lego fort, the buffalo information and the buffalo soldiers. Also the staff was really nice and talked to us about the fort's history. Lastly, I appreciated the diversity in the gift shop, thought we might just end up with some plastic junk, but found a beautiful kids book on the buffalo soldiers and some hand made pottery. Thanks!

The Historic Arkansas Riverwalk is a 1.3 mile loop on a 32-acre urban waterfront in downtown Pueblo. Completed in October 2000, it features family-oriented activities and events, such as boat rides and concerts. The walkway has many historic buildings along the river, which was returned to its original location after being diverted in 1921 due to a devastating flood that destroyed Pueblo.

Very nice area to walk in. It’s clean and well maintained. Several places to east along the way. Nice public art to view. Distances noted along walkway to support walkers. Beautifully done. In late morning there were a good number of people out, but was not at all crowded.

The historic riverwalk was really nice just to walk about at 8:00am in the morning, as was the adjacent downtown area. So many sights to see along the way. There were so many trees and lanterns that made it feel cozy and inviting. It is a shame that the water was not filled, though I am sure some of it might out of fear that the pipes would freeze in wintry weather.

We loved this walk along the river. There are so many statues, sculptures, informative signs, and pretty artwork along the trail. You can take a boat tour along the river or rent a peddle boat and cruise around the little pond there. There's so much along the way, it was so fun. It was crowded when we went, but nothing too bad and it was the Fourth of July weekend also.

We were here in the morning and there were only a few other people walking around. It was February so the water was drained and there were no boats going. We still had a really good time. The kids loved all the different statues.

Great and quiet place without crowds. We enjoyed ourselves here. No wait anywhere during the peak season is a big plus. Beautiful design along the river walk. Very relaxing and lots of picture points. One point deducted is because we had a hard time finding an open public restroom anywhere around the riverwalk. The bathroom doors were all locked for some reason while we were there. We ended up purchasing some drinks in order to use the bathroom in a restaurant nearby. So a heads up for others.

If you like l, you can take a boat ride around the canal

Fun little downtown area to walk around at. Several sculptures of animals and people are scattered around the river. Not a long walk by any means but it is cute. Lots of restaurants along the route as well. It will most likely take you less than an hour to walk if you don’t stop often.

The water is gone in the winter - so no boat tours or paddle boats (and sometimes there's a bulldozer scooping up icy mud from the bottom) but it's still a nice walk, not too big to do all in one go and lots of art to see and a few restaurants. Reminds me more of Oklahoma City's than San Antonino's. Extra charming at night!

The wife is from Pueblo and I am not a fan of visiting...it's a pretty run-down city and has crime issues. However, with things like the Riverwalk maybe things are turning around. The place is an absolutely stunning place to take a walk. Very well kept and maintained and if you were brought blindfolded you would NEVER know you were in Pueblo. Worth the trip to the city for this alone! Sadly most of my photos are on my camera but here are a couple I took on my phone.
Facility offering exhibits & a short film about the park, plus a bookstore, snacks & souvenirs.
This place just doesn’t make sense. It’s incredibly beautiful and a wonderful place to camp! It has great meadows, mountains and of course huge sand dunes. This park is absolutely worth the adventure. The pictures DO NOT DO THIS PLACE JUSTICE. Definitely going back.

Who knew there were sand dunes in the mountains of southern Colorado. I've vacationed all throughout Colorado when I was young with my parents and as adult with my wife and daughter. The sand dunes are NOT what you see at the beach. It's an amazing experience to see and interact with the sand. You can hike up to top. You can rent sleds and or boards to slide down the sand dunes. The park is open 24 hours. However the visitors center open for specific times and days. The Great Sand dunes admission is $25 per car load. I recommend during the summer go early in the morning before the sand heats up. At night you can see the stars and on a full moon the dunes come alive, but bring a flashlight.
The Park Rangers are helpful and friendly. Plan to visit when you're in Southern Colorado.

Decent educational exhibits, wonderful views, plenty of parking, great customer service, decent bathrooms, and as for the park itself. It’s a lot harder to get to the top than you think! At least it is for a pregnant lady used to living below sea level!! Hahaha it’s definitely something pictures will never do justice. Also sitting down in the wind is a BAD idea. Sand goes in every hole… although this park is dog friendly and you can bring your dogs. Please note that this area is very very windy and on bare human skin the sand feels like needles when you get higher. If you have your dogs it might be best to not bring them up high on the dunes. When you’re standing it seems fine but if you sit you feel what they may feel…. Also something really cool we seen was people sledding and sand boarding down the dunes! It looked like a lot of fun and I wish we would have brought something!

This is a hidden gem. It seems like nearly no one knows that there is a national park in the middle of the Colorado mountains that has miles and miles of sand dunes. Yes it feels like and looks like you are in the middle of the Sahara desert but you are in the mountains of Colorado! It is truly eerie that there are 700 foot sand dunes that you can climb and literally walk for miles in sand dunes in the middle of the Colorado mountains. But be prepared for a tough hike up towards the top, the 2 mile hike feels like four since you are walking in sand. Yes it is a bit off the beaten path but definitely worth the trip. Truly a must visit, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Sandy Silverman — Google review
Beautiful national park with great views! It will be windy, so prepare accordingly. Also a hike on sand takes longer so if you’re going up the dunes give yourself ample time. However there is plenty of flatter terrain to hike as well.

Loved the experience. Trail behind Visitor's Center leads to a lower parking lot and the dunes, or you can drive down and park and go on to the dunes. Sand is hot, hydrate! Be careful with dogs, paws will burn on sand. Just beautiful landscape. So much wildlife in area.

When we went the visitor center was only the gift shop. All of the exhibits and theater were closed, due to Covid, so we weren’t able to have the full experience. You can buy your souvenirs here. NOTE: they do NOT sell or rent sleds or boards here. If you are planning to sled or board, you must buy or rent beforehand. I’d like to go back sometime to experience the rest the visitor center had to offer:

I have been wanting to see the dunes in Colorado for a long time. They were pretty cool to see. I wasn’t able to climb them this trip due to a recent knee repair surgery but hopefully one day. The people were climbing up then sledding down. It looked like a lot of fun. It’s well worth the stop yo see. Again, it was a little less than organized. There were signs but there was no one around to explain anything or ask questions unless you went to the visitor center.

This park is one of a kind. Beautiful views all around. The feeling of a beach in the mountains. Make sure to make the hike up to Zapata Falls. And take a plastic sled or board for the dunes. There is something to do here for all ages and enjoy.

Tourist trap. It's decent enough, crowded, and the ac isn't great with all the doors opening all the time. The exhibit is neat inside. Didn't go to shop, but some peeps in the crew bought stuff. Water refill station is great (wish there was more than one).
The signage on the trail is not maintained, but the views are great.

I'm so glad I read reviews. People are not kidding when they say get there early. On a week day. Not a holiday
We've traveled on a motorcycle from Richmond Virginia to the Grand Canyon and we are slowly heading back east. This National Park was on our to do list. It is Saturday, Memorial weekend. There was a 13 minute backup delay at the entrance going in at 10. Coming out at 12:30, the line of cars stopped, waiting to enter, is over a mile long. CRAZY!
The park rangers were not letting cars go down to the parking lot to the dunes, because it was full. We were allowed to go down on the bike. Otherwise, its parking on the side of the main road and walking a half mile or more.
Once we parked, we took off our shoes, rolled up our pants, walked across the rushing stream and went up the first hill. The water was cool, inviting.
Families are all around, kids digging in the sand, splashing in the water. It's the beach in a vast, land locked area.
Definitely worth the trip. I cant stress enough the importance of going early. On a weekday. Not on a holiday.

The Pueblo Zoo is a year-round historic park that features over 400 animals and interactive exhibits. Visitors can enjoy the hands-on experience of feeding some of the animals in the designated area. The gift shop and admission office are run by friendly staff members who provide excellent customer service, making visitors feel like long-time friends of the zoo. Becoming a zoo member is highly recommended for those who love visiting frequently as it makes trips affordable.
I’ve been coming here for about 24 years, never had a bad experience. But I wanted to shout out the people upfront in the gift shop and admission office. Diana and her associate (I didn’t catch her name. She had a long ponytail ) but they were both so extremely nice and they really made our visit; the best it’s ever been. They handled us with extreme respect and customer service. And treated us like a long time friend of the zoo. And again, I will be back next time. To my home zoo.

The Pueblo zoo in Colorado was clean and had pleasant staff. The animals appear to be adequately cared for. This is a small zoo and I suspect most families will easily complete the zoo and inevitable gift shop in under 3 hours. No giraffes or elephants as it is a small zoo. The red pandas seem to be the main attraction though the viewing habitat leave something to be desired for a main attraction. Overall, a pleasant zoo with a nice amount of shade and a few water fountains. Drinks and treats within the zoo or reasonably priced and less than several other zoos we have visited. However, the gift shop is where prices seemed overly exaggerated. This is usually the case, but it seemed to be a bit higher than normal at the Pueblo zoo. Families on a budget would likely want to steer clear of the gift shop.

These stars are not in the lack of anything other than the disappointment of the empty enclosures. The bear pits were empty except two bald eagles were in one. There were more open empty spaces or if they had something in them there was tarps up so we couldn't see. HOWEVER even though it was a small zoo, the animals were active even on a 38° day. The best part was the lions! They were very active and roaring so loud you could hear them across the park. This was a very cute and clean park and inside the town park.
With that being said please go visit and donate money to this zoo. It is worth keeping around.

Pleasant place to visit with kids. Great zoo for young kids. Not crowded at all so kids could walk and explore freely. Lots of shade so even in the heat, this was a nice outdoor experience. Layout was nice and we made it through the zoo in about 2.5 hours.
When we visited, a lot of the animals (camels & others) were not being displayed.

This is a pretty cute small zoo. No, you won't find elephants and Polar bears but you will find smaller animals like Meerkat, Gibbons and the like. Well kept grounds, drinks available. Nice pathways for walking or pushing a stroller. One thing that's really nice, it's not crowded! Animals appear well fed and taken cared of.

Smaller zoo, but decided to go to see the Red Pandas. For families taking strollers or those with mobility issues, wide paved walkways run throughout. The zoo took roughly 1.5 - 2 hours for us to walk through, and overall, we enjoyed our visit

Quiet, beautiful, little zoo. Loved that there weren't throngs of people crowding up the place!! Very easily accessed all animals. Staff was very informative!

I was really pleasantly surprised by this zoo - it's a bit bigger than I thought and the sight of the big cats left me impressed. There's also a whole, huge pirate ship inside one of the buildings! I also loved the three habitats for the red pandas, they were all very active. But the habitats themselves are a bit dated. I love that it's a historical park and zoo, and some of the buildings were built by the WPA, but sometimes they just seem a bit too small for some of the animals. All in all, it was very nice to walk around on a sunny day.
Just next to it but outside the zoo is a very nice playground, fields, and a small amusement area. The rides were closed during my January visit, but there are some cute ones in there, including a carousel and little roller coaster.

Nice quiet zoo with animals we don't normally see at the Denver zoo. We really loved the red pandas but were disappointed they didn't have any as stuffed animals to buy in the gift shop. We also liked how much closer we we're able to view the animals.

Even though it is a smaller zoo, its definitely a good atmosphere! Affordable food and entrance, the animals enclosures were all clean and easily viewable! Some enclosures were empty or being renovated but bear with them!! For being a smaller zoo, my family had a great time there, and not being as busy it didn't feel like the more trafficed zoos where you almost get pushed out of the way of some animals! Great for a day trip, and surrounded by the city park as well, the atmosphere was really friendly and welcoming!

Super sweet staff who were very knowledgeable and in their eco zone took the time to show me where the animals like to perch, how old they were, and what their diets consist of. Great way to spend 3-4 hrs. They have plenty of benches to sit and rest on if your legs get tired. The penguins were cute, but I wouldn't recommend going too early. Many of the animals were sleeping, like the painted dogs, and couldn't see them too well. The kangaroos were also hiding out. But overall great experience and really enjoyed the history found throughout the zoo.

This zoo was terrible. They had one lion. They had a few good animals but this zoo is been small and we finished it in 40 min. My fab part was the red panda. I wasted my money, so small and half of the animals were gone. There was no bear or cat or anything.

This place is nuts! Very scary to think about climbing all the way to the top, and definitely looks like someone’s home project. But it’s kitschy and fun. The history is fascinating, even if the manifestos all over the place are weird.

This is the one of the most unique spots within the US. The building is quirky to say the least, and hands down the most adrenaline-pumping place I've ever been to. You've got parts seemingly held up by wires and sections that look like they'd barely hold up a cat, let alone a person. But against all odds, they do—and do it impressively.
Navigating the stairs, towers, and metal bridges truly sends shivers down your spine. And here's the kicker: this entire place was the vision of just one incredibly inspired individual. No formal building experience, no permits—just pure passion and a big dream.
They don't charge an entrance fee, which also means they're not guaranteeing your safety. It adds an edge to the experience, making every step a thrilling venture. If you're in for an adventure, I highly recommend giving this place a go. Safe travels!

This place was a work of beauty. The intricacies of this place were mesmerizing. There were so many staircases that went to a different part of the castle. There were some areas that couple potentially be hazardous to people- holes in the flooring and holes in the staircases. But it was so beautiful! I was fascinated and wanted to explore the high up area outside but my husband was worried it wasn’t safe enough. There was one area that had a lot of animal feces. The gift shop was cute. There’s no public bathroom but there was a portable bathroom. There was also a stand with hot chocolate. It is free to visit and there’s a place the leave donations for them to continue improving the site. It is definitely worth a visit.

I can definitely understand the hype with this place. It's legit scary cool, but petrifying. The idea that some guy just built this castle with his bare hands is insane. Definitely stop by, but remember to tread lightly and watch your step! The views from the top are amazing, especially when you're terrified from the trip to get there.

This place is just WOW!! This place is a piece of art. It amazing to know it handmade. Just an awesome place to see although it's not for the faint of heart. I only got up to the second story with the kids. Hubs and one of my boys went to the top of one of the towers. Overall was such a cool place to visit.

Fun place to explore at your own risk! I loved the eclectic feel the whole place had, You can see the love that went into making the castle over so many years and it's still under construction. Allow maybe 1 full hour to 1 1/2 to explore it all.

Seriously what a cool slice of Colorado History! Bishop Castle is a must see day trip! Beautiful drive only a few hours from Denver. The history and story behind the structure is classic American Dream.
If your visiting or a native make sure to put this on your list! Feed the chickens too, you won’t be disappointed, and drop a few bucks in the donation can.
Highly recommend

Very interesting and odd place. The drive up to it is beautiful and many pictures taken. The building is not for the weak or disabled but cool place. No bathroom facilities, small gift shop, make sure to watch the video on floor one of how it was built.

Totally bizarre place that is worth the visit. Definitely watch the intro video. Be careful walking around, especially in winter- wear spikes or hiking boots. It's super slick. Some gaps and drop offs that are scary if you have a Fear of heights. Slippery. But such a cool story and fun playground like castle with a dragon and gift shop at decent prices and some souvenirs and hot beverages on a trust-business (trust that you pay). Glad I went once in winter but I think I'd prefer summer.

Bishop Castle is a Colorado Roadside attraction that is free (donation box on site). When you arrive, the entrance is right off the highway. Park alongside the highway and walk to the entrance, keeping an eye on cars. I visited 2/19/22 and the area around the castle was muddy and icy in some places, wear good shoes to get around. The highway in from Colorado Springs had dry roads the entire way, but it is at 9000 ft elevation and definitely in the mountains. If your vehicle can't manage snow and ice be aware before heading up. When touring the castle I wore a backback and I wouldn't recommend it. The staircases are very narrow and wind up and down in spirals. The day I went had very little tourists and I could take my time resting (remember, 9000 ft elevation) climbing up and down the castle. This was a peculiar, wonderful, interesting, fun thing to see for free. It took me about 90 minutes to view everything. The wind was gusting and some of the metal walkways and stairs were swaying in the wind, which felt exciting and maybe a little dangerous. A couple was taking wedding photos inside, but they were only there a little while and it was still easy to see everything. Check it out.

I feel this is a place that everyone should visit. What an experience. The drive out there is so beautiful. When you get there there is parking along the road. You can see the castle from the road but you will want to go in and explore. Just a heads up, it could be muddy. This is just one of those just go see it. There is a food bar which was closed when we were there, but the gift shop was open.

Definitely a workout to climb all the stairs. The views from the towers were incredible. It was amazing to see the use of natural rock and metal scraps and pieces. The stained glass is beautiful. The concessions were reasonable priced.

This was such a fun and interesting experience. Well Worth the detour on the way home from a camping trip. This castle has so many places to explore. The story of this castle is also interesting. It is hand-built by the Bishop, and despite many legal battles and complaints the castle still continues to be built. We were both afraid of heights so we did not go all the way to the top. There is some adrenaline for those adrenaline seekers. The views around the castle are great. The castle is such an impressive feat. Be prepared that the steps and stairs are steep and sometimes uneven, so if you have balance issues you might not do well here. When we got up the stairs we immediately were transported to a fantasy world. This would be a great place for live-action role-play games or to host a DnD session. Another great benefit of this place is that it is free to explore. You can make donations and explore buying things at the gift shop.

My husband and I visited Bishop Castle, in Rye Colorado, during our recent trip to see family in Colorado Springs. The drive to Bishop Castle, located in the middle of a National Forest, was lengthy, but beautiful! Well worth it when we arrived! The castle is an amazing structure that is hardly justified with words, or even photos. You truly have to see it for yourself to really appreciate it. Since I'd have to write a novel about it, to explain the history of the place, I'll suggest you look up information about it and the remarkable place that it is. Truly a work of love, labor, and no doubt more sweat and tears than I can imagine.

We came to this place on my birthday looking for adventure. It is a bit of a drive, but it's definitely worth it. This castle was built by one really talented guy. If you have kids, keep them close. You can fall off and die. If you love adrenaline, then you should definitely check this place out.

Interesting place that's worth visiting. Use caution when exploring, especially with children. It's an active construction site. There are many gaps in the flooring and stairways, low overhead clearance, and pieces of metal sticking out. There are visually no safety features to prevent you from falling from many of the high points and towers if you venture upward. They're are porta-potties at the entrance. It's free to visit and always open, despite the hours Google lists.

January 21, 2024 was my third time to visit this masterpiece in work. I am amazed every time I visit. Just the sheer height and size of this structure is amazing. It is a work in progress (construction site) so there are some obstacles and potential dangers. Just be aware and careful of your surroundings. I like to explore but the height of some of the areas elevated my adrenaline and heart rate. No entrance fees and self guided. I will continue to stop and visit Bishops Castle anytime I'm in the area and I would recommend to anybody else to please stop by and visit and also leave a donation

It is recommended to donate few bucks. You can buy farm fresh eggs here for 6 dollars and there's a gift shop!!!!!!

What a crazy cool place!! We went at a bad time weather wise. It was just mud. But so worth it! If you want to visit, I would suggest June when it’s dry and all the snow is gone. It is very strange and a marvel to experience.
Prison history dating back to 1920s, with 30 cell exhibits, a gas chamber & confiscated weapons.
This was by far one of the most interesting museums I have been to. This is still a working prison just on the other side of the museum. The span across history they have been able to capture with their artifacts is like a time machine. It truly leaves you feeling like you know what the daily life of inmates was like in the early years of the prison. If you have an afternoon and are in the area, stop by.

Neat little place, staff was friendly. Lots to look at and learn. Has some unusual items, coffin, gas chamber, escape ladders, prison art etc. Has a gift shop that apparently current inmates make the clothing & gifts while currently incarcerated. Self guided, takes about an hour give or take. Your given a very detailed booklet to explain in additional detail info about different exhibits. Helpful but alot of reading. We enjoyed looking around on our own mostly because everything is labled with good descriptions of what your looking at. Only complaint is not really anywhere to sit to get off your feet other than a couple chairs on lower level. Otherwise pretty cool & reasonably priced.

It’s a museum of its kind, we enjoyed interacting with the staffs and knowing about the colorado prison system, The long history of this century old museum, some gory incidents thatbtook place here. You can buy some handicrafts made by the inmates. But not sure if your kids would enjoy

Loved our time here! The young gentleman that helped us was very passionate about the museum and the history. It was nice to see as the museum was chalked full of interesting stories from all of the years. They also kept it updated with recent criminals so they continue to work on this museums. Learned some local accounts on the two criminals that escaped the neighboring penitentiary in 2018 so it made the trip and visit so much more memorable!

On my recent visit to the Colorado Prison Museum, we we're greeted and told a little about the history about the Museum and given a pamphlet to use as a self guided tour. The Museum is housed in a former Prison, and gives alot of information about the history of the Prison system and what you'd see back in the day there. There are so many fascinating artifacts here including an old gas chamber and things made by prison inmates.

If you are a history buff or a true educational nerd, then this quaint prison museum is a place to come visit and learn something interesting about how this prison system works years ago. This is not a guided tour, self pace with full of information and interesting facts. I recommend travelers coming through Canon City to visit this museum.

A worthwhile stop if you are in the area. Lots of interesting artifacts and contraband on display, and many accounts of the different inmates that have stayed in the area prisons. Add a trip on the Royal Gorge railway to see the fading evidence of the 8 mile water pipeline built by inmates back around 1900 and you will start to appreciate how integral the prisons have been to life in Canon City.
Gordon MacKean — Google review
Prior to visiting this museum a local advised to watch the 1949 "Canon City" movie through youtube to get a context of what this museum is all about. Although this museum is actually the Woman's side of the prison (Man's side is still in use), you still get the full gest of how it's built.
To start, we had to park in the back since the F-450 was too big to fit in the small front parking lot.
We toured the outside of the walls for about 30 minutes reviewing the buildings and gas chamber. There wasn't any cost associated with that. I guess this is to "wet your whistle" before entering the main museum and gift shop.
Walking up the 20 steep steps to get into the door we were greeting by an enthusiastic receptionist that gave us a quick overview of the facilities. Then we went on a self-paced tour.
There was approx 30 cells, each outfitted with memorabilia and history of events, weapons used by inmates, riot control items, uniforms, movie garb, medical items, Warden Best saddles, and stories about how, when and where the history took place, gang member photos, chow hall, fire department equipment, and all the other items you'd expect to house all the inmates.
THEN, there was the lower deck that portrayed inmate created items, infirmary, scale models replica of the gas chamber and how it was built and how rehabilitation for prisoners was their primary goals.
As you exited the lower deck you can visit the gift shop. Some pretty neat stuff in there.
This should be a bucket list item and we highly recommend you spend the 10 bucks to get in. We spent about an hour 1/2 here

This was by a wide margin quite possibly of the most fascinating exhibition hall I have been to. This is as yet a functioning jail simply on the opposite side of the gallery. The range across history they have had the option to catch with their curios resembles a time machine. It really leaves you feeling like you understand what the day to day existence of detainees resembled in the early long periods of the jail. Assuming you have an evening and are nearby, come by.

Visited with my 25 y.o. niece while she was visiting. The IDEA of this museum is great/fascinating. There is so much history, so many interesting things and stories (history, artifacts, warden and inmate profiles, artwork, etc.) contained within these walls that couldn’t be experienced/known any other way. We were pleased to have gone. However, even though we paid for a “guided tour,” were told when we arrived that there was none (no explanation given). Instead, we were given a guidebook with info that coincided with each cell/display and did our own, self-guided tour. And that was fine, except that there is just SO much written information posted (and lots of small print) that we eventually became overwhelmed by the sheer amount of it. And yes, that is sometimes the nature of museums, but this felt like much more written info than most museums. I suppose if someone were especially fascinated by all of the details provided, reading all of the info provided might work. But I cannot imagine the average visitor taking the time that would be required to take in all of the info they provide. And maybe that’s OK. But I have to wonder if others have left feeling the same or worse. I strongly urge the state (or whoever maintains this museum) to find a way to invest in some sort of audio option (like other museums have). It would make it much more palatable (and possibly more popular?).

Most unique museum visit I've ever had.
This strikes a good balance of incarcerated and the people who guarded/administrated.
It is apropos that the yard of the museum is literally buttressed by the wall of the functioning prison.
Good mix of past and current.
Make this a stop while you are visiting the Royal Gorge area

Very interesting. I recommend talking to the front desk staff a bit too as they have an inside scoop on a lot of things, such as the 2 prisoners who escaped in 2018. Such a unique experience to hear the staff recounts of this. Worth every penny! Loved it!

We had some time to kill in the area, and although hesitant to go spend time in a museum, the first exhibit---the gas chamber---got my interest!
For 12 bucks (Oct 2023), I have to say that I was truly amazed by how drawn in I was by the displays in the jail cells. There are a lot of printed stories about past prisoners, events, and I found myself reading one after the other after the other. Next thing I know, although I had planned for an hour visit, I was 2hrs into the visit and had more stuff to read. If you have the time to go here, go in, specially if you like crime stories. I'm not a fan, but even then, I was captivated by what I was reading.
I honestly thought we would walk in, walk around and leave, but instead, I found myself reading stories, searching for more on my phone, and well, next thing i know, had to leave cause had no more time to spend here.
Worth the 12 bucks!

We enjoyed the tour but would have REALLY preferred audio devices and more places to sit for those who are handicapped! Make people leave a deposit or a credit card on file if they damage the MP3 players. There was too much reading for someone who has bad eyesight. If you are able to read, walk, and stand for long periods I highly recommend this tour! I have problems with all 3 but am able to do stairs. I very much enjoyed it but was tired and sore after. Great gift shop with some unique items too! Not horrible prices.
Always one of my favorite places in Canon. The road is pretty narrow and steep, but once you get to the top the view is amazing (especially at night!). Highly recommend anyone passing through to check it out.

This short but exhilarating free drive is located only an hour southwest from Colorado Springs. We drove it during sundown and was not disappointed by the views. You are literally driving along a narrow ridge line. There are several spots to pull off and park. There are also several hikes at the top where you can walk along the ridge with amazing 360 views of Cañon City and the mountains. Do it at night and you will get beautiful views of the city lights. Overall the drive is super short but if you stop and do some of the hikes it can take around an hour depending on speed and frequency of stops. Definitely a quick must do if you’re visiting COS, Cañon City or Pueblo.

My husband & I drove Skyline Drive in September after going to the gorge. Wow! This little drive is terrifying. The double drop-offs were a total trip. I don't know why but it felt like we could just fall off the edge of the earth. Exhilarating. We didn't stop but it was only because I just wanted it to be over. I was freaking out a little. We want to go back and do it again. We'll definitely get out of the car to look around a little more on the next trip.

A one way road that goes up a steep ridge that offers some parking spots at the top, about halfway into the drive, in that area there is also some access to trails that go around the area. Overall the drive and experience was worth it and offers great views of the Canon City and the surrounding areas. The landscapes in this area of the state are really pretty. This drive does not take very long at all, if you didn’t stop at all it would take less than 15 minutes I’d say. So stop by and do it if on the way to the royal gorge or driving into canon city.

Free drive over the mountaintop, not too narrow for a regular sized car. There are stopping points at least two. But you kind of drive up to the skyline start to go up the mountain, and drive down to the other end that winds around to exit into a neighborhood. No turn around point. So you pull in and you have to drive across to exit. It’s not as scary as it sounds in my opinion.

HA - Yup, this is a bucket list item. The 2 1/2 mile UP the mountain and down is a GREAT view of the entire town and surrounding mountains. WOW.. Like others have mentioned there isn't ANY room for errors. I recently found out that this skyline drive was actually built by inmates from Canon City Prison. VERY COOL.
First time, I drove this on my BMW 1200 GSA motorbike and this time I drove this in my F450 with the wife on board. Only ran into 1 issue where someone parked on the road and I couldn't get around until they moved. Nonetheless, the F450 is 19.5 Ft long. Restrictions on this road are no vehicles over 20ft and speed limit is 15 MPH. Take the trip, you won't be disappointed.

The Royal Gorge Bridge & Park is a 360-acre amusement park situated on top of a canyon, which is spanned by one of the world's highest suspension bridges. The bridge was built in 1929 and spans 1,260 feet across the 950-foot-deep Royal Gorge. The park was greatly affected by a wildfire in 2013, but has since been rebuilt with attractions such as aerial gondolas, rides, and a theater.
We arrived to Royal Gorge Bridge and Park after a snow storm the day before. The weather was beautiful staging a nice sunny day. This historic landmark was worth the almost two hour drive to get there. While most of the activities were closed due to winter maintenance, we were lucky enough to have been able to ride the gondola. The gondola alone was worth the cost of the ticket of admission. The landscape continued as far as the eye can see, beautiful gorges and canyons that you could have taken in for hours. For those that are scared of heights, I have a fear as well and managed to walk across the bridge with comfort. Don’t let fear keep you from experiencing this park.

What an amazing view! I really enjoyed the day. Consequently, there was a storm coming in, so we were not able to ride the gondola across the canyon.
The Park Ranger Michael was so kind. He gave us a really nice history of the park, and let us know if we came back the next day our tickets would still be valid.
The Raphtor Show was really educational.
The landscaping is pretty.
It was worth the drive! Go check it out!

Entrance fee is $32 per person and that includes unlimited gondola rides. It won’t take too long to walk around the park if you don’t do the zip lining or the rafting tours. It took us about 2.5 hours to get food, walk the bridge, see the shows in the theater and take the gondola back to the visitor center. The view from the bridge is quite amazing and a little unsettling if you look through the gaps in the wooden planks. Definitely stop by the theater and watch the bird show.

We truly enjoyed our visit, the views and history are remarkable in itself. The show is very informative and Tom was an excellent ambassador with so much information about the park and the region. I really enjoyed our chat. Views are spectacular, no question however it's a bit pricey hence the 4 stars. $32 per adult is high and the add-on experiences as well.

It is definitely a beautiful area! Today the gondolas were closed because of high winds! The winds were in excess of 40-50 mph. It was cold with the wind chill but beautiful!! We also watched the movie on how the bridge got its start and how the fire in 2013 effected the area, as a lot was completely devastated by fire! Everything had to be rebuilt around the bridge. Thankfully not much of the wooden planks on the bridge were damaged by the fire. But they are now presented in front of the building that houses the ticket booth, restaurant, restrooms and gift shop! Enjoy your trip!

Last time I visited here was about 15 years ago, so it's been awhile! But it was as awesome as I remember it being from back then! Although they were still allowing cars to drive over it back then, I definitely like it more now that it's mostly pedestrian traffic. I highly recommend reading the history of the bridge on the walls to the left hallway once you get past the ticket area. General admission tickets include the red gondola ride, so go get on that! And if you're brave enough, go do the zip line! Love this tourist spot and it's always really cool to see engineering masterpieces like this!

It was a great experience! We bought the tickets there! But actually, you can buy it online for faster entry! And the main thing is the Gondola rides! The zipline and the skyline! The bridge is the main reason! The cafe has good food! At a reasonable price! Make sure you apply bug repellent!

Adult tickets are $35pp and it includes the gondola across the gorge, when the whether is good. We went two hours before closing and it was a bit too windy, so we couldn’t ride the gondola. It was a beautiful walk across the bridge, with every state flag, people zipping past on the zip lines and flying back and forth on the swing. Looking down over at the river and train track was really wild, as you could feel the bridge move because of the sway in the wind. Definite must see!

During our visit to Royal Gorge, Colorado, we enjoyed the complimentary gondola ride that came with the entrance ticket. The bridge itself was stunning, and we loved the breathtaking view it offered. The zip lining and sky coaster activities provided thrilling experiences. At the ice cream store, we found the best vanilla ice cream on the mountain. The bird show was also quite enjoyable. Additionally, they had a theater presentation showcasing the history of the bridge. Overall, it was a decent experience, but we felt it didn't quite live up to the hype.

We spent the night in Canon City and was able to arrive at Royal Gorge Bridge and Park Just as it was opening for the Day. We quickly purchased our tickets and proceeded to walk across the Bridge. Seeing and hearing the river almost 1,000 feet below was amazing. As you walk across the bridge each states flag is displayed and I had to stop and get a picture with the Virginia Flag (my home state). The views from the bridge are spectacular and in almost every direction. As we approached the south side of the bridge, we saw a several big horn sheep scampering around on the rock. Our ticket included a gondola ride across the gorge which afforded us a spectacular view of the Bridge and gorge. Because we arrived early there were no lines and we were able to enjoy the Bridge and the other attractions at our leisure. Several people in our group did the Sky coaster thing and the zip line. They all said they were totally amazing. All the employees that we encountered were polite, Professional and went out of their way to be helpful. Like most attractions the concessions prices are inflated. $3.00 for a Bottle of water is in line with most other attractions. All total we spent almost two hours here and had a most enjoyable experience.

Fantastic place to take the family. Kind of pricey admission but a lot of clean and well maintained attractions come with it. We were advised to enjoy the gondolas first in case the wind picked up. Once across the gorge you have access to the theater and play ground and can walk the bridge as well. I recommend doing all the attractions. We had our little with us but the zip line looked amazing. We spent 2 hours here. Could have spent an hour more.

This is absolutely a must if you are near by. We went on a Saturday morning with perfect weather and not busy at all. We road the gondola over to the other side first then it was a down hill hike to the bridge to cross back over. Once on the other side we did the swing that swings you out and over the canyon. The walk back over the bridge is breathtaking experience. The bridge does move a little side to side once you are in the middle. And the wood planks are a little loose for a better experience. They have a great Cafe and food court and a gift shop as well. Great facilities (Bathrooms, food, drinks, gifts, attractions, and lots to do) like I said this is a must go to.

I went to the Royal Gorge in the '70 when I was just a kid. It's obviously changed since then (fire) but in general it's a long bridge over a very scenic gorge and was enjoyable to walk across. I don't agree with the fee to do this though, but I guess it's private and they can charge what they want. The parking is free though.
We got there a few minutes before it opened and there weren't a lot of other people, which was nice. We talked about doing the zip line but when we saw that it was only a single ride across the gorge, we didn't think it was worth the money. There is a lot of walking, and it can be very steep on some walkways that have clearly seen better days. We walked across, then walked up the hill on the other side to the free gondola and rode back. The scenery is gorgeous and you can spend as much time as you want. We also sat through a short film and looked at the history (all on the other side from main entrance) and these were nice. We did not eat or buy anything beside popcorn for the film.
I'm glad I went, as I've fondly remember going with my family in the '70's. Just too bad it is expensive for a family to experience.

The view in late spring / all summer is gorgeous. It feels like you can see beyond the horizon from the bridge.
Walk over the historic bridge or enjoy a brief gondola ride to the other side where the brave few among your group can zipline across or swing out over the canyon.
Like your feet on the ground? Grab a snack and let the young ones run wild in the large park or go in circles on the merry-go-round. Adult beverages are served on-site to make the natural beauty just that much more enjoyable.
This is a must-see destination for those visiting the state or even just locals in the area for a weekend.

An awesome experience! The bridge was a little scary to cross but well worth it. A quick tip that I wish we knew: the bridge opens at 9am but the gondola doesn’t start until 10. So get there at 9:50 and take the gondola across first and walk the bridge back because then everything is downhill walking wise. Also buy tickets online in advance to save $2 per person.

2nd time visiting this remarkable bucket list item. THIS TIME we were able to purchase tickets and go through the various shops, movie auditorium for the 17 minute program.
We elected to "walk" to the south side across the bridge and look down at the canyon. AMAZING views on both sides of the bridge lined with state flags. Wow, not for the faint of heart and not in shape people. There are some super steep winding grades going UP the hills to get to the attractions.
Took the Gondolas back to the north.
To me, the price of $70.00 for 2 adults is too much. (minus 1 star)

I've had the opportunity to visit several times, but this time of year was my favorite (September). The weather was perfect, not hot/cold nor too windy, and it was not crowded. We actually got to ride the gondolas this time, and it was superb. Everything from the views, bridge, and educational video made it a great family experience. So, regardless of the time of year, I hope you make time to visit and don't forget your comfy shoes.

Just spent an absolutely wonderful day at the Gorge. It is so much more than a bridge and worth every penny. The staff were so helpful and polite. We visited the restaurant/cafe located by the gondola and enjoyed both the food and hot drinks. We could and would have stayed longer but rain and wind stopped play. Thanks to all the staff for making everyone's day a memorable one.

We drove out to the Royal Gorge from Colorado Springs, about an hour drive. The drive and scenery were awesome. We enjoyed the Royal Gorge. We rode the gondola across and then walked back across the bridge. Very nice, well worth the $30 each.

Spring Break in Texas schools comes much earlier than most places, so my family & I enjoyed the benefits of an off season visit. No lines, no waiting & the ability to soak up all the untouched natural beauty of this magnificent park. We even got 1/2 price tickets for visiting late in the afternoon which was incredible.

What a beautiful experience at the Royal Gorge Bridge. If you want to enjoy peaceful sights and feel a nice breeze this is the place to come. The bridge feels secured and you have the opportunity to use the gondola 🚠 as it is part of the ticket purchase. The ride on the gondola was smooth (I am terrified of heights) I absolutely loved it.

Fun place to spend time appreciating the scenery. The rides were a cool experience, and to walk across the bridge and seeing and standing on a feat achieved a long time ago was amazing. Friendly staff to make the experience even better. Must visit if your close by

The day we picked to visit was pretty miserable weather wise. We arrived a few days after a monster snowstorm. It was roughly 38 degrees with 40mph wind gusts. My husband paid about $130 for the four of us to visit. Unfortunately, to my surprise, there was loads of snow on the bridge. I understand it cannot be plowed because it would damage the wood. There was about 2 feet of snow and we were walking in tire ruts that were partially cleared at best. We had to sign waivers prior to entry. Considering the weather and conditions were poor.... And the add-ons (zip line, gondola, and swing) were closed, perhaps you could offer a discounted entry fee. $35 a person to walk back and forth across a bridge is a rip off. We had a high interest in visiting this historical man made achievement despite the adverse conditions and overpriced entry fee. It is truly an engineering marvel and the views were breathtaking.

The ride coming here is very scenic and memorable. The view is very beautiful and incredible. The long on the bridge is very scenic and all of the state flags. The zip lining was great and it’s a good way of seeing all of it. Location and parking is easy to find.

Definitely glad we made the trip here. Breathtaking views. The whole park was very well laid out. We took a ride on the gondola. Definitely suggest it as you can get some amazing photos. Also DONT look down between the boards on the bridge 😅
Well worth the cost of the pass. Make sure to get a pic with your states flag while on the bridge!

Fun and great experience. Nice and accomidating staff. Wheelchair accessible gondola and other parts of the park. Food is expensive and average quality so plan to eat before or after.
What a awesome adventure!!! My whole family went and enjoyed it! We can't wait for next year. It's a must do, my best part was the views.

Our family of 7 (5 adults, 2 children, ages 9 & 7) absolutely LOVED our Ride The Rockies tour on August 30th. It was an incredible experience you should not miss!! I highly recommend the 4:30 pm time slot as the sunset at the end was breathtaking! Our guide, Dakota, was fantastic. He loves what he does and sharing his knowledge of the area with you. We truly enjoyed his company and easy going style. Everything from making the reservation (we had a ton of questions) to arrival, being educated on the safe operation of the vehicles, and what to expect on our adventure was handled with excellence, patience and our personal favorite...humor! Thank you Play Dirty for being a memorable part of our first family vacay to beautiful Colorado!!

We took our small company on a team building trip to Colorado Springs last week. As part of the experience we booked a 3 hour ATV (all of us had our own ATV) tour with Play Dirty ATV Tours that took us from the 6,000 feet elevation to 9,000 feet--3,000 feet of absolute awesomeness. From our first experience with Katrin at home base to the experience with our guide, Scott, it was perfect.
Scott was fun, super energetic, experienced, and knew the area quite well (Scott grew up in these mountains and it was apparent). Because we were on our own ATV's we had the opportunity to run some trails that were quite narrow and a little more challenging than others. There really is nothing like experiencing these views and landmarks. We would definitely do this again with Play Dirty ATV Tours.
Thanks for a great time in such a beautiful part of our country!

We had a group of 10 and Randy took us on a great ride. Everyone in the group had a great time. A couple of them were in their 70’s and truly enjoyed themselves as did the rest of us. Randy really made it an enjoyable experience. Thank you!

We had a blast on this tour! Pete was a wonderful tour guide! Made several stops to share local historical info with photos and took pictures of us too. Views were amazing (even though weather was moving in and smoke from Canada didn’t allow better views) We did the 2 hr tour and over all, well worth every penny for the memories!

Took a vacation to Colorado Springs and decided to take a hour and half drive to Cotopaxi for a 3 hour ATV tour with Play Dirty. This was an amazing experience packed with thrills and relaxation. We never been on a ATV up a mountain before and it was a whole experience that you MUST TAKE! Being on top of the mountain how quiet and peaceful it was is what I meant by relaxing. Sun shining 67 degrees and little snow flurries just sparkling in the views! We got to see some wildlife and be inside a volcano that is no longer active. Will was our tour guide and he was awesome! Super friendly, knowledgeable and made sure we were safe and comfortable the whole ride. Very hospitable guy! Thank you for this experience! 6 out of 5 stars I strongly recommend!!!

My son and I had a great time yesterday! Scott was an awesome guide and we were grateful to have him with us. Every part of our visit to Play Dirty was positive, including the online reservation system. I'm sure we'll be back again. I've heard Texas Creek OHV area can get pretty hectic on the weekends so if you're able to book a weekday I highly recommend it, we had minimal traffic on a Tuesday.

Fabulous must do! Scott was our guide and man did he. We drove on a snowy trail in our own side by side up and down the mountain. Scott would stop and point out interesting facts about the area which were really cool. My husband and I travel to Colorado several times a year, doing all sort of things but this was a 1st. Glad it was with Scott. He gave us insite into the areas history and you can tell he loves his job. We will be back.

If I could give more stars I would! We did the 4-hour tour and it was absolutely amazing! Pete (I believe that was his name) also added historical aspects to the tour which we loved! Everyone was so kind and helpful and made my first time in CO so memorable.

Had a great time! We were a group of 6 and got the last tour of the day. Our tour guide led us all the way up 3k feet elevation. it was a bumpy and extremely fun ride. Some parts were indeed very rocky- overall adventurous and we made a bunch of scenic stops with stunning views of the Rockies. Highly recommend if you are looking for a fun, different activity in the area. And oh, it stands true to its name. We were totally covered in dust/ mud by the end so be prepared accordingly. Wear the goggles they provide for sure, else you won’t be able to see much in just sunglasses/ shades.
Overall great fun!
