Love to see wild horses. Super excited when You found them . You need to book the Corolla wild horses tour they drive you around sand dunes and beach to looking for 😍😍

It’s the beach. Of course it’s awesome
Rob Aversa — Google review
We were on the beach 4 different days during our week vacation in the OBX. We drove our Jeep down, for the permit and had a blast. Being able to see the famous Corolla Wild horses was the highlight of our trip. There are just over 100 horses left but we saw several foals which h is great to see.
Don’t be stupid by taking a vehicle that doesn’t have a transfer case with real 4x4 capabilities. We saw many people needing to get towed at a cost of $300+! Yes there are many capable vehicles just know your and your vehicles limits.
There were many dolphins off the cost that we got to see as well.
The beach stretches 23 miles all the way to the VA border. The further you drive the less crowded. There are also houses to the west you can drive through. There is nothing paved, it is all sand.
Well worth the trip. We will be making this an annual vacation for us.

Amazing beach on north end of Corolla.

We had an amazing trip to see the wild horses.
Lisa Sheikh — Google review
Such a beautiful beach went on the 4×4 beach and got stuck because we missed the sign to air down your tires before getting on the beach. We did get to see a wild horse on the way down the beach. Also should of checked the weather there was a nasty storm rolling in while we were on the beach but it was so pretty.
Kimberly Foster — Google review
Must have a four wheel drive to visit this beach and must air down your tires before driving onto the beach. No roads, no gas stations, no stores. But all this is what is attractive about Currituck Beach. (Carova) Not as populated. We've visited in both prime and off season. Off season is definitely a bit slower on the northern beaches. Schools are back in. And if that's not enough of a draw, add in wild horses!
Allison Morris — Google review
The beach was beautiful and clean. We went early in the morning hours when there was no one out and also came at sunset on several occasions during our week stay. The beach never became too crowded and everyone seemed respectful of each other as to not be blaring music or acting inappropriately because of intoxication. The water was a bit colder than I would’ve expected being it was mid-August but it sure felt good after being baked by the sun. We will return when the next opportunity presents itself.
Lola Stewart — Google review
About as laid back a place as you can find in the country...
We love to go here and stay on the north end of the beach where it's pretty remote, although it takes real four wheel drive to get there. Spending time with the wild horses is absolutely the best.
The Currituck Beach Lighthouse, established in 1873, is a brick structure featuring a staircase with 220 steps. Visitors can enjoy exhibits and purchase souvenirs from the gift shop. The grounds are well-maintained and also offer stunning views. This historical landmark is a great attraction for those interested in history and architecture. Additionally, the lighthouse features a charming wooden porch furnished with rocking chairs that provide a relaxing atmosphere to visitors.
Beautiful NC Lighthouse! It is a great one to climb. Very accessible with landings and hand rails. $12 cost of entry. Grounds are well maintained with a parking lot fairly close to the entrance. The gift shop has nifty memorabilia. This is a must visit attraction in NC.
Sherri Barham — Google review
A beautiful brick lighthouse that you can tour! They charge $12 to climb to the top. A 220 step spiral staircase with landings every 20 or so steps (handy for climbing breaks) takes you to the top & back. The views from the top are breathtaking! As was the wind the day we visited. 💨 Don't miss the souvenir shop or nearby boat museum (free).
William McCurdy — Google review
This historic lighthouse is managed by a nonprofit and is amazingly well preserved and cared for. The grounds are beautiful and accessible from a nearby free parking lot with very nice clean restrooms adjacent to the maritime museum. It does cost $13 to climb the tower. The keepers house is not open to the public, but the small keepers quarter is open as a very well-stocked gift shop. The lighthouse is surrounded by live oak had pine forest, and is not fully viewable until you are very close. Then, photo opportunities are plentiful. The view from the top is truly amazing of the ocean and Currituck Sound. Interpretive signage is plentiful and very informative. This is truly a low cost and must-see OBX attraction.

Spent 4 days and 3 nights at this Inn. The staff were so pleasant. There was the cutest people in the office. The Inn and grounds were exceptionally clean, we had a king suite. The room as huge, with a kitchenette, a small table with a leaf, 2 chairs. The bathroom was a nice size. The bed was comfortable, pillows were a bit hard. A typical continental breakfast is served from 8am-10am. Would absolutely stay here again.
Raine — Google review
Awesome place to visit and see an older age construction of the lighthouse. Quite a few steps to the top, but was well worth it. There are several landing and stopping points with history on the wall to learn from and take a rest from the climb. The area itself is just fabulous. Give it a visit. You won’t be disappointed!!
Damac (U. S. Traveler) — Google review
Awesome and thankful that it’s been maintained as it was from day 1. Awesome climb up and the views are second to none. Should offer discounts to seniors/military to attract more locals to experience it first hand.
Southwest Speed LLC — Google review
Was glad the hours were extended to 8pm on summer season. Jill the lady in charge of the tickets has been very gracious in answering our questions regarding the landmark. The climb was not too bad, just take your time to ascend, and you will be rewarded with a breath taking view of the surrounding area. It was very windy at top
Ed R — Google review
It shouldn't be so much to walk up the lighthouse, but I understand they need money to keep it preserved and to pay for the boat museum next door. I am thankful that we got to go.
There was a line, even before opening at 9 but we had a fun time. I would go again when my kids are older if they were interested.
You can see so much from the top but it is hard to feel like you can linger long since you know a whole line of people is waiting at the bottom.
Jennifer Martin — Google review
This is a beautiful lighthouse, but if you have mobility issues, nothing there is very accessible. Because it falls under historical laws, they are not required to make it accessible. The sidewalks are uneven brick, and even the gift shop has a very steep staircase that was hard for my 70 year old mom to get up. Unfortunately there is only 1 handicapped parking spot, and we were forced to park next to the garbage cans. It is unfortunate that they don't attempt at all to make it easier for people to at least view the lighthouse easier and access shopping there.
angela baldwin — Google review
Great history, awesome climb and stunning views. Also the grounds are fantastic and they have THE BEST gift shop on the OBX. Along with a charming wooden porch with rocking chairs. Loved this place
Dan Blevins — Google review
This is currently the only lighthouse on the outer banks you can walk up to and climb without a reservation. Actually you cant make advanced reservations at all. The hardest part is actually getting to the lighthouse as it is on the most northern end of the outer banks as traffic can build up in Duck during the tourist season (Summer). To avoid the traffic mess I recommend coming up early in the morning (Like before 8am). Don't try to take an alternative way as traffic backs up on the neighborhood streets as well. Choosing the wrong time to visit can increase your drive time up to an hour. Use google maps to best judge traffic build up. The lighthouse itself is easy to climb with landings to stop on and rest. The building is well ventilated with fans on most landings during hot weather. The staff is friendly. A museum shop is located next to the lighthouse and has some nice items for sale. Parking maybe hard to find during busy times. There are lots of other things to do in the area including visiting other historical buildings or seeing the Currituck Maritime Museum at the base of the lighthouse.
Andrew White — Google review
This is a wonderful historical destination. The lighthouse is one of the few that still allows you to climb the stairs inside. Across the grass from the lighthouse are several historical buildings as well as an information center with the history of the lighthouse and buildings. It is a beautiful property to wander around with the kids and pets as well. (Just remember to clean up after them).
J Pagan — Google review
Get there early; the line seems to grow as the day goes.
To help with the flow of people they only let a few groups in at a time.
Climb was 220 steps -spiral steps & 9 platform landing.
Seemed like an easy climb. But your speed up is at the mercy of the group in front of you.
Its windy at the top - good views up there!
Robert — Google review
The line was long, but once you got inside, it felt like you had the place to yourself. When we got to the top, we were the only ones up there. We were able to walk around the top of the lighthouse with unobstructed views. When we got there, the line was at the back of the brick walkway, and It took us 40 minutes to get our turn. It went pretty fast, I thought. The store was cute and had a lot of things to purchase. We walked to the museum afterwards and checked out the views at the park. I took my 2 kids, who are 10 and 12. We had to stop a few times on our way up, but there were fans on the landings so we could catch our breath and cool off.
Lauren Oliveira — Google review
This is a beautiful lighthouse. I did not go to the top but they did let me in to get pictures. It is $12 to get in. There is also a really nice gift shop that I loved and a museum. Only issue is the museum is closed on the weekends. The surrounding area around the waterfront is beautiful too.
Karen — Google review
Great day climbing this lighthouse on Wednesday 12/27/23. $10 per person, must sign a waiver to climb. Great adrenaline rush at the top balcony of this lighthouse!!!
Allysa Robinson — Google review
Such a beautiful lighthouse! We did not climb the stairs to go to the top, but we are planning to in the future. I believe it is $12 per person to enter and climb to the top (there was little to no wait to enter the lighthose while ee were there). Walking around the grounds is free. Their gift shop is adorable and one of the historic buildings.

This lighthouse is located in Corolla, Beach North Carolina in the Outer Banks. It is a fun, family, friendly lighthouse that encourages you to learn more about the local history. Nearby is amazing views, and a barbecue restaurant that is highly sought after this small town at the northern part of the island is one of the hidden gems of North Carolina.
Marc Sierra — Google review
The Currituck Beach Lighthouse was built in 1875 and is the only one in the state where the original brick remains unpainted. For a climb to the top it's best to arrive early to avoid the crowds. It's 220 steps up to the catwalk, and I had it all to myself to enjoy what can be described as spectacular views. The surrounding grounds were shaded and peaceful.
Charles Pinney — Google review
What a beautiful place! Great place to have a picnic also. Would definitely go back
COLLEEN PRALL-EMM — Google review
An intense walk up to the top of the lighthouse, but so worth it. The panoramic views of the area were amazing. As one walks up the spiral staircase it is nice to.take a break at each of the landings to catch one's breath. A very impressive and majestic brick lighthouse.

Great family fun, and lots of activities and history for the children. The crabbing and sound activities were enjoyed by our whole group. And our guides were excellent and had us participate in the activities in the historic park so that we could experience the spectacular views the area has to offer. They also had plenty of patience with our large group of 10!

Wowzer, A complete description of life on the Outter Banks in the past. From ducks to fish the highs and lows of past indulgence. May that be happening today?
Mark Perschel — Google review
Well March is not a good time to visit. Driving on the ocean is dependent on the tide. People drive very fast (also kinda rude). However, we also had a nice local lady give us an abundance of conch shells. The tide is very rough it does not feel like a place you can set up a blanket and enjoy a day at the beach, too many cars.

I’m not much of a hunter or fisherman but I love wildlife and the people working here seem to really love wildlife and the environment. I enjoyed visiting and talking to them. They gave a lot of good tips.

So much hunting and fishing type of stuff and that’s not really my thing but I went to learn about wild life and BOY did I learn! Very good information from these fellas! I learned about snakes! The display in the main gallery was pretty baller and my friend and I got confused about if the water was higher or lower cuz there wasn’t any but it was okay… I had a good time there it was cool!

What a great find! Free experience on the water here in Corolla, NC. We've been here for years and never visited the state. Great wealth of information about the area and it's rich history. We will certainly be back. Great welcoming staff!
James Reid — Google review
This place offers education about the wildlife in the area. The exhibits are excellent. They describe and explain about North Carolina , especially Outer Banks wildlife. They offer a great variety of group and school programs. Students can learn about the wildlife, which include fish, crab, frog, turtles, whales, dolphins, owls, and other birds. They also offer a program of Archery for Beginners, since archery is considered as a skill with roots in the country's shooting and hunting heritage that has evolved into a sport.
You can learn how dissect a fish. You can learn about animal Olympics like, Turtle Hurdles, Whack-a-Fish. You can learn about Japanese Fish Printing used to be a way of keeping records of fish caught. Also learn about how the chain of supply from when the fish is caught to get to your dinner plate, and so on and so on. A very interesting and educative place.

Its free, and its clean and interesting. Can't spend more than 30 minutes here and I would normally give it 4 stars but I didn't have any cash to donate so I'm giving it 5 in hopes more people will go who can donate. =) Nice place

This is a great education center for the wildlife and history of the area. Theres a short movie to watch and an area with stuffed animals showing what kind of wildlife lives there. Its fun!
The Whalehead Club is a restored 1920s mansion located on Currituck Sound. It boasts vintage furnishings and offers guided tours to visitors. Although it was designed as a Hunt club, it was never actually used for that purpose. The property also includes a modern museum/theater, a historical village, and an exhibit of old boats used in the area.
Such a neat place. You are also right next to the Lighthouse so you can knock two sights out with one trip. Did not do the tour but I had a blast wandering around the grounds and reading the signage.

This beautiful piece of American History hearkened back to Newport, Rhode Island and all that went with it. The house was beautifully appointed. The docents were well versed in all the history. This was well worth the trip and the modest price of admission. No photos are permitted inside. But the decor! Oh my goodness, decadent and unique.

We absolutely loved photographing Mimi & Ryan’s wedding at Whalehead Club! The staff on site are super friendly and accommodating and this location is truly incredible! We lucked out with the most perfect sunset which led into a truly gorgeous evening under the tent. We can’t wait to photograph here again!!
Ryan Moser (Ryan & Rach Photography) — Google review
We enjoyed our self-guided tour through whalehead club and the other displays on the same general property we're surprised that the whalehead club never was actually used as a Hunt club though it was designed to be used as such also there were many other Hunt clubs in the general area
In addition to the whalehead club there is also a modern museum / theater on property as well as a historical village and a museum of many of the old boats used in the area
We did pay a small fee to tour the wellhead club but the rest of the property was free although I think there may have been a fee to go up in the lighthouse if it were open

A beautiful and interesting place. A huge home built by a very rich family when the area was barely developed. Take the house tour it is worth the small charge. Visit the 1800s church and see the lighthouse and grounds.

Beautiful park with wonderful sunsets.
Plenty of places to walk around and explore. Great for photos. Lighthouse is within walking distance.
I have been coming here for years and never took the opportunity to explore this area. Well worth a visit.
Lots of birds in area. Even saw a bald eagle.

Our experience here was awful. 2 friends of mine just got engaged here. When the photographer arrived, the tour guide was made aware of the proposal that was about to happen. She was immediately very rude. When our small party arrived, we alerted the guide to the surprise as well. She was very hostile towards us all, truly with no just cause other than bitterness. Irene, said tour guide, went as far as tell the *bride to be* that we were not able to be on the grounds for the “proposal”, as well as mentioning the hidden photographers. She nearly ruined the surprise in a very classless display of disregard for such a special moment. Upon discussing the issue with the tour guide and manager, none of the employees apologized for their actions. This business is marketed AS a venue for proposals and weddings, and I would highly recommend against giving them your business.
Sarah Scalero — Google review
Great park with boardwalk and soundfront areas to explore. Historical footbridge over the water leading to the boathouse is very picturesque. Ample parking. The maritime museum adjacent to it has the nicest public restrooms I have ever seen. Great area to go birding.
Edward Lizewski — Google review
Really neat place to visit with a ton of architectural detail. The audio tour is great and very detailed. My biggest complaint is that they made it incredibly clear they absolutely did not want children present in the building. They advertise children under 5 are free, but the staff in the building stopped us at the door when we tried to bring our kids in. We still brought our children through, but it was clearly evident with how they chased us through the building the children were not welcome.

Lovely place, pleasant place to walk around and view the water. Decent art show there today; some very talented artists present. The nearby historic village is also worth a visit.

We went over for the evening tour and it was a great evening. Weather was great and the tour was exceptional. The history of the property and owner was very interesting. We have talked with friends who have not done the tour yet so we will be going again next year. My wife had the privilege of going in the building years ago before any remodeling! She described the condition of the piano at that time and was pleasantly surprised to see the quality of restoration. It was very informative evening. Looking forward to next year's tour.

In May of 2023, my family and I vacationed in Kitty Hawk and had Whalehead Club on our agenda for the week. When we arrived there we fell in love with the place and ended up spending the entire day in the park.
A house tour, a museum tour, walking the beautiful grounds and crabbing the inland harbor were enough to whisk away an entire day and still leaving other attractions unattended.
While back in the area on a business trip in October I used a free day to go back to Whalehead Club for a second look. I can’t get enough of this place.
Whalehead Club deserves a place on your vacation agenda. Trust me, you will not be disappointed.

Great place to stop if you are in the corolla area. It is kid friendly, the lighthouse is neat, and the boat ramp there is ideal for kayaks, jet skis, or small boats with a shallow draft. The surrounding waters can be pretty shallow so be careful in motorized boats.
The Duck Town Park Boardwalk is a scenic and enjoyable park located in the town of Duck. It features a mile-long boardwalk that runs along the sound, connecting various restaurants, marshes, and forests. The boardwalk is an ideal spot for exercise as you take in the beautiful coastal views and explore local shops. Apart from strolling along the boardwalk, visitors can also go on walking tours to learn more about the area's history and environment.
This was an awesome find in the little town of Duck. While it's a smaller park, the kids had a blast and it's well shaded. The boardwalk itself is a fantastic way to get some exercise, while walking along the coastline and checking out the local shops. Highly recommend it!
Shanah Bell — Google review
Excellent well maintained boardwalk. We are here towards the end of the season and only found one loose board while we were walking. The boardwalk loops around all of the shops in the area and is an absolutely perfect place to catch sunset. If you’re in the area I recommend checking it out!
John Van Riper — Google review
The shops were all really great and almost every one was dog friendly. This was our first time here so I’m not sure if we caught it on a weird day, but the water smelled absolutely horrible near the waterfront shops (not so much on the rest of the boardwalk).Still, it was clean, interesting, and cool views. The boardwalk also beings you to quite a few shops which was nice. Definitely a neat experience if you’re in the area!
Matt Olpinski — Google review
Extensive system of boardwalks along the sound. This is an excellent place for a variety of outdoor activities: kayak or paddle board launch, fishing, sunset watching, birding, etc. there are public restrooms and a play area for kids. Some free public parking. Access from several commercial lots.

Very pretty place to walk around. Large boardwalk goes all along the shops. Husband's - take your bride and spend the day. . . She'll love it.

Duck town Park was excellent. Watched a movie in the park on movie night. They had a table set up for anyone who wanted to use bug and mosquito repellent spray. It was a great evening. And the caretakers were awesome. They made sure everything was just right!
Damac (U. S. Traveler) — Google review
Very nice walk to explore the sound. There are lots of benches for lingering along the way. Ample parking is available, as well as a small playground for the little ones.
Janet Wilson — Google review
Loved the Boardwalk. The walking tour that we were able to sign up for was informative. We will visit the boardwalk and sound again.
Lisa Remsen — Google review
An awesome place to experience nature..The shops we may be able to see another time..but our trip in March to the boardwalk did not disappoint.
If you have health issues be sure to find places to use the restroom before you go. As not many businesses allow the public to use the restroom.
While on our walk we did the Duck Donuts verses Donuts on a Stick comparison. My son preferred Duck Donuts while my husband prefers Donuts on s stick. If yall love sweets, why not try both.
We were able to see cool scenes and awesome birds. If you are a nature lover, I encourage you to protect yourself from the sun and experience this trek. And the benches that allow you to rest and just relax while enjoying nature allow even those with physical challenges to enjoy the boardwalk.
Denise Harrington — Google review
Great views. Free but expect to spend a little money at the connected shops and restaurants. Lots of good deals for tourists.
Aric Pennington — Google review
Nice long boardwalk on the Currituck sound in OBX! There are lots of shops and restaurants along the boardwalk. There's also a cute playground for kids not far off of it. Part of the boardwalk goes right over the sound where you can sometimes spot turtles and birds. There's also a very nice public restroom located right off of the boardwalk. Definitely worth stopping by if you're visiting the outer banks.
Crystal Martirano — Google review
Very nice boardwalk, on the sound side. It does go behind a few shops that you can stop at along the way, such as Duck Donuts and Super Wings, but nature is the main attraction.
We enjoy crabbing here, there are a couple of good places. We do catch and release.
There are public restrooms a short walk from the public parking lot... just take the land trail to the left and when you come to the clearing they are to the left.
Angie Stuck — Google review
This is such a great alternative to walking on the beach. It is a wonderful walk with beautiful scenic views. Amazing sunsets.
Mark Simmons — Google review
Best sunset view in the area. There aren’t to many public locations on the sound side to enjoy the sunset, but it only takes one to make it memorable. The pier is part of the restaurant and it’s closed off (private dining only) which is good if you’re here for a perfect sunset photo.
Chad Sawyer — Google review
Definitely recommend. Nice and quiet. Many choices for snacks or a full meal. Nice scenery.
Kay Kay — Google review
The boardwalk follows the sound side of the island through the town park, much of the shopping area and town center. There are well maintained restrooms nearby. If you take your time tehre is a lot of wildlife to see. There are some signs but it would be nice if there was a little more effort put into pointing out and explaining nature -- flora, fauna and the interaction of the water and land. Photos are large driftwood, a crab hunting tadpoles, a frog and a turtle.
Michael Richards — Google review
Wonderful walk that changes with the time of the day and season! The path connects a series of very nice shops, restaurants and even a playground in Duck. You can spend 25mins to hours(!) strolling around the town. Each time you come back, you will discover something new.
This is a Monument to a Century of Flight and was dedicated in 2003 on the centennial of powered flight. Inside the orbit of 14 wing shaped pylons are about 4500 bricks engraved with messages of sponsors from around the World. The stainless steel pylons have engraved accomplishments and images of the 100 most significant accomplishments in the first century of powered flight. The granite monument at the entrance is a poem called "High Flight". The superb welcome center across the parking lot is a great place to begin your exploration of the amazing area. The two ladies inside are great ambassadors for the community.
Scott — Google review
I wouldn't make a special trip to see as it's essentially just a monument within a roadside rest area, but certainly worth a stop if it's along the way. Nice to see that the exhibit was comprehensive in acknowledging other non-American aviation and aerospace accomplishments (e.g. French, Soviet...)
Kenneth Wyllie — Google review
Very nice little memorial I especially like the historical timeline the metal can get a little toasty but other than that I really enjoyed it

It's a tucked away monument with a timeline of man's history with flight etched into the pillars.

Gives you history about how first flight flown and where we are now...
This is near kitty hawk visitor area. I am not sure why it is not in wright brother’s memorial as that memorial ground is really huge. There are 12-14 pillars and each pillar describe time line of first flight to first shuttle till now. History lovers would love this.
It won’t take more than 15 minutes of yours so include this in your itinerary.

This is a very touching tribute to a century of manned flight. Thank you, Orville and Wilbur!
The Wright Brothers National Memorial is a must-visit attraction in the outer banks with an admission fee of around $10. However, it's free for those who have an America annual pass. This site offers visitors the chance to stand at the take-off spot where the first successful airplane flight was tested and explore exhibits that provide detailed information about this historic event. Additionally, there is a gift shop on-site where you can collect souvenirs or magnets.
Took our 10-year-old grandson and we thoroughly enjoyed this visit. There is a small museum with a detailed history of the family and lives of the Wright Brothers. It was very interesting and gives a great insight into the area and the lives of the brothers as well as the locals during that period. There is a replica of the plane and it was very interesting to see and try to comprehend how someone was able to visualize and build something that would prove to be the beginning of air travel. My grandson found it fascinating. When you leave the museum you can see a replica of the living quarters of Orville and Wilbur Wright and the hangar where they built the plane. There are markers that showed the lengths of the first four flights. There are well made walkways from one area to the other. You can take a short walk to Jockey's Ridge and climb the large sand dune (paved walkway) up to the Wright Brother's Memorial. It is beautiful and you have beautiful views of the area and the ocean. On the back side of Jockey's Ridge is a metal replica of the plane and children (and young-at-heart adults) can climb and play on it. There are life-size statues as well of the locals who assisted the brothers. When you go into the museum young children can get a Junior Rangers booklet and complete the "assignments" as they tour the area and earn a Junior Ranger's badge. There is something for all ages and a very interesting recap of a huge part of NC history. Well worth the $10 entrance fee, and that one fee is good for 7 days.

Very busy but very awesome spot. A nice visitor center with gift shop. Highly recommended buying your park pass online before coming; it will save a little time at the ranger station (which usually has a wait to get in). If you go inside, they are still masking for COVID, but they do offer them at the door if you forgot yours. Outside, there is a good bit of walking that you can do all over the grounds to see the flight markers (note there is little shade). The parking lot fills fast, but they do have overflow parking in the field nearby (look for signs). There is a place to refill water bottles, which is nice. Definitely recommend the hike up to the monument for the view!

Prepare to walk! Though you can drive to the base of the dune before walking up to the monument.
Went here as a kid and now brought my kids and it’s even better than I remember. The museum has enough information in it without being so much the kids get bored. Outside there isn’t a lot to look at but the historical significance makes it worth it. And the view from the top of the dune is amazing!
Definitely go. And as all national parks in the area, like the lighthouses, tickets are priced well and kids 15 and under are FREE!!!

See where aviation began by exploring the Wright Brothers National Monument. While the large obelisk is on a huge sand bar that the Wright Brothers used for some of their experiments, the actual successful flight of their machine took place near the visitor center.
If you can, visit as soon as the monument opens when it's cooler (if you're there in the summer). I suggest driving to the obelisk on the hill first because there's quite a steep climb (parking is nearby all around the base). The visitor center is air conditioned so it's a nice way to cool down after your hike. While you can walk to the obelisk from the visitor center, it's quite far. On a hot day, driving is your best option.
After the obelisk, drive around the back and stop at the bronze replica of the first flight complete with statues showing the other men there.
The museum inside the visitor center is interesting, but it's not as comprehensive on the lives of the Wright Brothers as I would have liked. However, you do learn about their achievements with flying and it's a great reminder to anyone (especially kids - if parents point it out to them) that failure is a learning opportunity and VERY relative. The Wright Brothers failed A LOT more than they succeeded and yet we're still talking about them today and they are in no small part the reason we've been to space!

Awesome 360 views. Very neat experience and a must-see when visiting OBX! History was made here! It's amazing to realize how far aviation has come in less than 120 years since the first flight of just 852 feet.

Getting into the park can take some time and the line of cars can really get backed up. The inside museum is great for a not too long air conditioned walk around. Walking the actual flight path is sombering in a way to see how far we have come in a century of flight. Walking up the hill to the actual memorial is quite a trek but worth it for the views. It's worth going to but definitely a ton of walking so bring the right (see what I did there?) shoes!

This is a great National Park. We got there just in time for the last talk, where she told the story of the Wright Brothers. She did an excellent job and was very engaging. It was fun to hear how many times the Wrights traveled to NC to accomplish their goal.
Going in January be prepared for wind and cold. Also, you don't have to walk from the visitor center up the hill. You can drive around and get quite a bit closer. You will still have to tackle the hill though!

Nice spot to stop by if you are traveling in outer banks. It has entrance fee (I think $10) but if you beautiful America annual pass then it will be free
The highlights are
1. The visiting center has very well information about Journey of how first flight was tested successfully.
2. There is gift shop to collect gifts or magnets
3. Outside you have many activities
You can walk through the tracks where first flight tested
4. You can walk towards memorial or go bay car as there is parking near by memorial
Rest you can enjoy and take photos

A great way to spend an hour or two when visiting the Outer Banks. I always enjoy learning about the history of major milestones in American and World history. The site is very handicapped accessible but it is important to note that if you have trouble walking, bring a wheelchair and a kind person who is willing to push you up the hill to see the monument up close. The paths up to the monument are paved and they have a ramp at the entrance of the museum. Inside the museum the exhibits are arranged to allow easy navigation with a wheelchair. Great place to enjoy the sunshine and get some exercise!

This national monument is so clean. The staff is super friendly. Water in the water fountains was not cold much to our dismay after the long trek up kil devil hill in the heat. The monument is very beautiful, but getting there is rough. If you are in a wheelchair, use a cane or crutches while "accessible" it is unlikely you will get yourself to the top without help.
The visitor center was picturesque. Friendly staff. They held a learning opportunity under a large white tent due to heat.

Pretty cool memorial. The visitor center is very informative. Staffed with knowledgeable park rangers. The exhibits inside and out are very well done. The markers displaying how far they flew in the first flights are awesome. They have a path so you can try to beat the distance and time.

An amazing national park that does a great job of explaining the history of flight and the Wright Brothers. The hill walk is nice, the monument is quite large, and there are exhibits that offer something for different age groups throughout each part of the park.

It was insanely windy (we went end of April and knew it was going to be cold but still!) and a good climb to the top but anyone can walk to the memorial at the top of the big hill. It’s a driveable loop around that memorial with some informational plaques places around the loop and some public bathrooms. There’s also an indoors museum where you can take refuge from the wind and learn about all the gliders they made and the successes and failures the Wright brothers endured. About 3 times a day, the museum will have a live informational “show” where they’ll go up to the replica and talk about the history of the Wright family.

This was a surreal moment for me. As a pilot, coming here and learning about how it all started, the ups and downs of their efforts and all they have contributed to aviation was amazing. Loved seeing the rock markers of each of the 4 first flights, the memorial and the statues of the first flight were great. I recommend spending at least 4 hours here to be able to read everything and walk the grounds. There is plenty of parking, clean bathrooms and a water refill station here.

A lot to learn about the trials and tribulations that was involved with humans learning to fly. The overall site has a lot of walking and steep hills to see the monument but everything is accessible. You might need assistance getting up the hills as the slope exceeds ADA guidelines. The park rangers here are very helpful and willing to answer any questions you may have. There is a decent view of the site and kill devil hills from the monument.

This place was awesome! The museum was very nice and the staff were well informed on the history.
The grounds are beautiful. You can walk the runway from the first flight. There is a monument on top of the dune where they flew gliders before trying a motorized aircraft.
You really shouldn't go to the OBX without seeing this place.

I was able to get in for free thanks to being with some seniors who had a park pass, but I’m rating this like I had to pay full price. The admission was $10 per person, which seems excessive for what was available. There is a small museum, and rangers available to give a 30 minute tour. Our group lost interest in the ranger tour about half way in, and did their own thing. This is essentially a big open field with a few monuments depicting where the Wright brothers took off and landed, as well as a hanger and a hanger they converted to their living quarters. There is also a huge memorial at the top of the hill. The memorial was the best part, as it gave outstanding views of the surrounding area.
If I had to pay full price, I would have been upset at what was there. It might be worth taking kids there as an educational experience, but you have to pay per person, not per car (as I am used to with National Parks).
There is maybe an hour worth of entertainment here if you really take your time. I would definitely not recommend going out of your way to visit.

Such a fun outing. Ample parking, clearly marked paths and great air conditioning and restrooms. This would be a great place to bring children, there are many opportunities to run and discover. The gift shop was neatly filled with appropriate treasures- books, postcards, shirts, maps and trinkets for all.
The park ranger, Adonis, gave a lively storytelling inside the building which we thoroughly enjoyed. We walked to all the sites outside and the view from the monument atop Big Kill Devil Hill is beautiful, you can see the sea. I’m a grandmother and I learned plenty I didn’t already know! Super fun ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

There’s nothing like this place with a ranger tour to make the first flight and the history of aviation to come alive! With all the books I’ve read on flying, nothing did as much as this to make it visceral. Cannot recommend enough!

Excellent stop for any flight, history or NC enthusiast. NC is famous for two types of flight…
1. Orville and Wilbur and their first successful flight with a manned powered aircraft.
2. Michael Jordan

Visited in October 2014—an interesting piece of local and aviation history. In a nutshell: On December 17, 1903, the Wright Brothers achieved a monumental feat in aviation history with the first powered, controlled flight of a heavier-than-air aircraft. This inaugural flight lasted 12 seconds, covered 120 feet (approximately 36.6 meters), reached a top speed of 6.8 miles per hour (about 10.9 kilometers per hour), and attained an altitude of approximately 10 feet (around 3 meters).

As visitors to the area from the Dayton, OH area we had to stop at this memorial and check it out. I’m so glad we did - it was a wonderful visit. Climbing the hill to the memorial helps you understand why the Wright brothers came so far to make their first flight - they needed that elevation and the warm air off the water. The memorial is beautiful and the visitors’ center is super informative!

An amazing experience. You get to walk in the footsteps of aviation giants. The museum takes about an hour if you read every display and take your time. The gift shop is small but has some great memorabilia. The hike up the hill to get to the monument is long but it's worth the view.

Soar through history at the Wright Brothers National Memorial! This iconic landmark in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, isn't just a monument, it's an immersive experience into the lives and achievements of the aviation pioneers.
Prepare for liftoff: Be aware that the monument sits atop Kill Devil Hill, so comfortable shoes and a willingness to climb are essential. The reward? Breathtaking panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and the very spot where the Wright brothers made history.
Beyond the granite: While the 60-foot granite monument is impressive, the true gems lie within the Wright Brothers Visitor Center. Interactive exhibits bring their story to life, showcasing their meticulous experiments, countless failures, and ultimate triumph.
Step back in time: Explore the reconstructed 1903 hangar where they built their flying machine, and peek inside their original living quarters. Imagine their dedication and perseverance as you stand on the very ground where they launched their dreams.

I visited here at the end of November. There was a lot of crowd. The ranger gave nice explanations with props. The tour has 3 parts.
1. Ranger: Explain the history and significance of the Wright brothers. This is valuable info for 4th and up children.
2. Museum: It's nice with lots of information. All you need is some inquisitive mind about aerospace and history. A wonderful combination of science+history+geography.
3. Statue/Memorial: A giant memorial for wright brothers on top of a hill.
The information board is well written and spaced. The first flight attempts are well recorded and marked by stones.
Standing here you can really feel their excitement, hard work, efforts, sense of failure and achievement.

Nags Head's Jockey's Ridge State Park is a natural wonder that offers adventurers a variety of activities to enjoy, from hiking and sandboarding to kite flying. The park is always open from sunrise to sunset, and admission is free.
I always love coming here, and my recent visit on vacation was no exception!
The building was closed, but that certainly does not prevent you from going walking around it to access the sand!
Is there some sort of trail here? I know this is the end of the mountain-to-sea trail but I thought there was a trail specifically around the park.
Plenty of big dunes to take a fun tumble down, and this park contains the highest point in Dare County!
They also offer hang gliding here! If you look hard enough you can find the other end of the water too!
But what is this mysterious castle structure I took a picture of?
There are also showers for your feet at the entrance building, and you will definitely need it!

Great state park. Huge sand dunes with great views of the bay and Nags Head. The Park Ranger we met was really awesome and let the kids sit in his vehicle and gave them sunglasses and stickers. Lots of people flying kites and you can hang glide by appointment.

What a lovely unexpected stop as we arrived in the Outer Banks and waited for our rental to be ready. We ended up spending a few hours here and walking amongst the enormous dunes on a gorgeous spring day.Everyone in the family enjoyed it and it's great for little ones to run out some energy. It was nice taking our shoes off and exploring, but also watching the kites and hang gliders set up. You'll definitely want your sunscreen and glasses, since there is no shade out there.

My kids love this place. I do probably more than them...it's a really big hill of sand, which doesn't sound enjoyable at all, but the entire ecosystem captured there is incredible. Pack sunscreen, it'll be hot, but at the bottom of the dune, just as you come off the boardwalk, is a little basin where the water filters down and settles. The water is very warm and filled with tadpoles, which thrilled my kids to death. Take a kite and hold on, the winds will lift it high and fast. Watch the hang-gliding lessons and explore all the little paths. Great views of both the ocean and the sound

This was a really great place to visit and probably a once in a lifetime experience unless you plan to visit the Great White Sand Dunes in Colorado. The sand is super soft and the hike is very short to get to the main dunes. Images cant adequately capture how vast it feels when you’re there! If you have a pet I’d suggest going in the morning or evening so the sand is cooler. There is no shade whatsoever on the main dunes so bring a backpack and some water and a hat. Its also more windy at the dunes than in the parking lot so plan to go on a calmer day. It only took us 15 mins to walk from one side of the dunes to the other so its not as far as it seems when you first get there.
Only downside was that right after we got there someone dropped off 6 tour buses full of youths and their extended families so it quickly became a giant sandbox full of 200 cackling teenagers. Try going during off days/hours or multiple times since it’s totally free!

Pictures honestly don’t do this place justice. It’s amazing! It’s way bigger than I expected it to be, so you feel like you’re alone even though you may not be. There are so many trails to walk and it’s such a great place to bring your dogs. They do have to be leashed but we let ours run a bit without holding onto them because no one was around and they have good recall. 10/10 recommend giving this place a visit and I’d definitely plan to spend a good chunk of time here!

I loved the open dunes on an excellent February of 46F. When we got to the trees, the trail was not well maintained, but we scrambled to the water. The signs can be confusing but we use the app “trails” to guide us. I totally recommend this place when the temps are low.

I would suggest bringing some water. It gets hot on top of the ridge. However its worth the hike because the view is amazing.

Our all time favorite place to visit in the area regardless of the season.
Tip#1: Rent the boards from the shop.
Tip#2: WAX, WAX, WAX and WAX the bottom of the board every 3 trips down. Edges first!!!
#3:We bring snacks and blankets. Going up and down the hills is exhausting. We lay down, take naps, snack and take walks in between.
Our favorite hill is the first real big one in the first main clearing. We haven't covered all of the park but that was our tried and true best out of all the hills we did.
Make sure you walk towards the center hills so you can see both the ocean and the sound. It is beautiful. I highly recommend bringing a kite. We just unfold it and like magic it flies, almost too well. I do wish the little store had more Jockey Ridge merchandise. We would have stocked up. The staff were great! Thank you for a great experience.

Lovely dune park in the Outer Banks.
Lots of parking, restrooms, and multiple paths out to the dunes.
There is also a short boardwalk to a viewing area.
If you walk far enough, you'll eventually see views of The Sound.
Wear appropriate footwear and expect blowing sand.
Also expect crowds with tour and/or school groups.

Highly recommend visiting! We only had about 36 hours in the Outer Banks and we chose to do this. Free to visit. Went about an hour and a half before sunset. There’s a parking lot with plenty of spots and then at the little building they have a men’s and women’s bathroom. Plenty of stalls if you were with a group. We didn’t wear our shoes on the dunes so if you wear them, I recommend bringing a book bag to put them in. Also recommend sunglasses especially if it’s windy, because the sand blows into your eyes. 😆

We rode by and saw the people out on the dunes from the road so I looked it up and found the Jockeys Ridge state park. I told my husband it would be neat to go out there and take a look. It was incredible to see all of the sand dunes here! You wouldn't expect to see so many huge sand dunes comparable to what it must be like in the dessert just a much smaller scale. My husband explained to me how it reminded him of his deployments. It's a fun family friendly place to go and explore and play. You can see the beach from both sides at the very top of the sand dunes. We will have to come back one day with our boys.

Beautiful! We went twice at sunset during our stay in the OBX. One day was really windy, but the sand blowing over the dunes was really neat. Both days had beautiful sunsets and weren’t crowded. We went during the off season (March), so I’m not sure how crowded it gets in summer

Absolutely beautiful!! Waited for the sunset which was spectacular. Did a time lapse of the sunset. The park closed at 6 pm due to being in the off season; however, the park ranger was great and understood that the sunset would be after 6 pm and allowed for extra time. A must see. Be prepared to climb a steep dune following a scenic boardwalk to an observation area.

There were vending machines and picnic tables along w an area to rise the sand off.

Jockey's Ridge was one of the places on my must visit list while doing a lighthouse tour along the Outer Banks. It's a phenomenal place that feels otherworldly while being located in such a bustling location. The dunes and sheer amount of sand stretching to the horizon is amazing. It was a fun experience running up the dunes with warm sand under my feet. This is also the eastern end of the state's Mountains to Sea Trail.

We decided on a whim to visit Jockey's Ridge State Park, and I am glad we did. We went earlier in the day when it was very windy after a night of rain. My son and I walked the boardwalk to the end, and then decided to see what these dunes were all.about. First, we climbed a steep hill, but once we got to the top we were greeted by an open area of dunes, and a view, in the distant, of the Roanoke Sound. Nature is so beautiful and awesome because the dunes are majestic. After that we drove to the other entrance right on the Roanoke Sound beach. This section was more about the water, and less about the dunes. Even so, it is still impressive. And to watch people parasail the Roanoke Sound was equally impressive. Make sure to dress accordingly for not only the temperature, but also the wind.
Jennette's Pier is a fishing pier on the Outer Banks of North Carolina that reopened in 2011 after being destroyed by Hurricane Isabel. The pier is known for its wide, clean beaches and offers fishing lessons. It celebrated its 10-year anniversary in 2021.
For only a couple dollars per person, you can experience beautiful aquarium exhibits with live fish, educational signs, interactive digital exhibits,
A gift shop, an upper level with beautiful lookout of the water (as long as there isn’t an event happening!), walk the pier and watch people catch fish, learn the history of the pier, and take pretty photos. A must do for all ages. Wear comfy shoes and bring a sweatshirt if you get cold easily.

We decided to check out the pier while we're still here in OBX. I loved the signage explaining the history of the pier and the small aquarium inside. The bathrooms were also clean and orderly.
Our only complaints were the $2 fee for each of us to walk on the pier just to check it out and the fact that they aren't pet friendly, even though it's completely outdoors. Since we have our small dog with us to explore, that was a deal breaker.

We had an amazing time. We came in for a day trip to enjoy my son’s 2nd birthday and it was perfect. We stopped at the small family market around the corner and then headed to the pier where we were able to find easy free parking and very close beach access. We had no troubles getting to the beach with our two year old and our belongings.
I would definitely recommend water shoes for this beach. The current was very strong and the ocean floor was full of shells and ocean debris which was unpleasant. I put my child in a life preserver and I felt it wasn’t too safe to go in at all, although there were many people a good ways into the water. The waves on this particular day were just absolutely brutal, I was knocked over and dragged a few times, immediately skinning up my knees and the ocean could have swallowed up my 2 year old very quickly, even in the very shallow surf. I normally love to frolic about in the waves, but even just the surf challenged every muscle in my body, my knees and ankles were even too weak too withstand it for any considerable amount of time.
Despite the aggressive waves, it’s still a great beach and the views are incredible and the memories will last forever. There are no rows and rows of high rise hotels obstructing the pristine views. The other beach goers were chill and friendly. Everyone is happy on the beach!
I highly recommend this experience! Just bring some water shoes, sand toys for the youngsters, and your favorite bevvy.
There were many treasures to behold in the surf and sand. I would definitely provide my toddler a sand bucket and shovel next time, so he can busy himself making moats and sand castles.

7/29/22 This is a fantastic pier which has wind turbines that generate the electricity for the pier's lighting. It is the longest pier of the seven piers on the Outer Banks reaching out 1,000 feet into deep water.
It's very popular for tourists and fishermen. The pier has a blanket license for anglers and licenses can be purchased at the register with a valid driver's license and payment.
The ocean and beach views are beautiful especially at sundown. The beaches here are wide and there is a public bathhouse, outdoor showers and a lifeguard.
A gift shop is located at the entrance and admission to the pier is just $2.00 for adults and $1.00 for children under 10 for the day. Hours of operation are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. from May to October. Pets are not allowed on the pier.

I have been here a couple of times. I think this is a great pier to walk on and to fish. The first time I was here we saw three whales swimming past the end of the pier (which is rare to see). Today we saw a few fisherman catching fish at the end of the pier. The pier is pretty clean and the views are great if you want to take pictures with your family. There is a 2 dollar fee per person to enter onto the pier. I liked seeing the sun set, watching people swimming on the beach, and just sitting on the benches. I would recommend coming here for anyone vacationing in the area.

Not a bad spot on the beach. The bathhouse is nice, and is much better than most places on the OBX. The area under the pier also has lots of shade, which is great if you need it. The beach does get pretty busy by the middle of the day, so I’d definitely arrive early if you want a good spot.

Very nice place with great surroundings. 2 dollar entrance fee to visit pier. Lots of parking lots.

My photos show what you can see without paying the fee to walk onto the pier. Outside walls have the interesting history of the pier. A large brass sea turtle makes for a good photo with the kids. Inside there are restrooms, a mini aquarium, and a gift shop with apparel, kids binoculars, toys, fishing gear, and snacks.

Annual tradition for our family. We love the interactive touch screen information panels that accompany the incredible tanks. The pier itself has lovely commemorative fish shaped plaques inlaid in the wood walkway. The view is awesome and the beach is always enjoyable. Ample parking is a big plus.

Jennette's Pier is a fabulous location for a wedding on the Outer Banks! We truly enjoyed photographing Isabel & Jeremiah's wedding there, so many amazing locations for photos and some of the friendliest staff! We can't wait to photograph here again!

I’ve never been a big fan of piers that make you pay to walk out on and that’s why I could only give four stars. Other than the payment, the pier and gift shop are nice and clean. Plenty of seating and bathrooms.

$2 per person to get onto the pier. The gift shop and little aquarium inside are free. We walked to the end and got to see some Dolphins in the ocean!

We visited Jannette's Pier on a windy cold December day while on a road trip up the Outer Banks. There was a $2 charge per person to walk out on the pier. There were two fishermen and some dolphin spotters besides us. In the water in a wetsuit was a person body boarding the surf. They looked like they were having fun despite what must have been very cold water. I bet this place is packed in the summer.

One of the nicest piers I've been to. Great beach area too. There is a decent amount of parking but it does fill up fast during tourist season.

Beautiful day for a visit! This was our first time here, and I was pleasantly surprised at the overall experience. It cost $2 per person to walk out on the pier for the day. They have a nice beach access area and outdoor showers and bathrooms. They have sheltered areas to sit under along the pier. There were plenty of benches to sit on. There was also an indoor gift shop area and even a huge fish tank area with more bathrooms. Very nice! It's definitely worth visiting!

The Bodie Island Lighthouse is a historic structure built in 1848, that still operates today. Visitors can enjoy tours and scenic views of the surrounding area. Although some visitors may find the gift shop prices to be a bit high, it is important to note that most of the proceeds go towards maintaining the lighthouse and its grounds. The dock leading out into the marsh offers spectacular views as well.
What a wonderful lighthouse to visit. This makes only the second time in my life to come here, but they've improved it since I last came here in the early 2000's. Gift shop prices were a little high but given that most of the proceeds go to maintaining the lighthouse and the grounds makes it worth it. The dock that leads out into the marsh makes for a great view too. While the lighthouse itself was closed for our visit, I was not disappointed. I would like to come visit again someday.

Beautiful view from the top. YOU HAVE TO WAKE UP EARLY TO BUY TICKETS. You also must be at the base of the lighthouse 5-10 minutes BEFORE your reservation time. They only sell 8 tickets per 20 minute time slot. The rangers are pleasant and educational.

Must see sight on OBX between Nags Head and Oregon Inlet. Park for free and walk the boardwalk to a beautiful view of the lighthouse and surrounding marshes. Enjoy seeing and hearing wildlife, particularly water fowl. There are nice restrooms with flush toilets & running water. Plenty of free parking. There is a ranger station, book store and gift shop within the historic keeper’s residence building. The lighthouse is generally open for climbing from Memorial Day to Labor Day, but the sign we saw today indicated that it will open in late April. This is a very well preserved historic site, surrounded by natural beauty. Don’t miss out!

This is one of my favorite lighthouses. You do need to purchase tickets in advance on the NP website. It takes a few minutes to set up an account, so plan ahead during busy seasons. The view at the top is well worth the climb. Good place to picnic, restrooms available.

It was the anniversary of the lighthouse we as a family got to see it lit the old fashioned, original way of lighting the watchtower. Also, they had posters as a no-cost gift for attending the anniversary of its unique and priceless standing. Peaceful, easy to walk up the island strait, great for photography of all kinds. I had a local man kindly brief my family & I on the history of the lighthouse & why it was unique, just as a courtesy! :) Wonderful view & private!

The lighthouse is nestled in such a serene location, it's incredibly relaxing. The park service does an amazing job with the grounds and have such a trove of knowledge to talk about. Definitely ask a ranger about the story of the name of Bodie Island.
Do make sure you buy tickets online in the morning if you're planning on climbing the lighthouse, because it sells out regularly.

You can no longer walk up and get to climb this lighthouse. You must schedule in advance online and I did not realize that after driving down from Duck. It was still a great experience to get to see the lighthouse and we were allowed to walk into the bottom and see the stairwell and museum areas. There is also a boardwalk with an observation deck that has some beautiful views and wildlife to see.

This is another beautiful lighthouse in Cape Hatteras, NC. It has 216 steps, which I did not climb. They warn you that it's hot inside and children have to be a certain height and children cannot be carried in order to climb the stairs. I'm sure it's a beautiful sight at the very top but I won't know unless you post your pictures so I can see!! Also, try lifting the can of oil that the lighthouse keepers would have to carry 2 times a day up all those steps to fuel the light! Good luck:)

Pretty cool, I never really saw a lighthouse in person before. If you want to walk up into the lighthouse you have to purchase your tickets at 7am online for it. When we got there, there was only 1 ticket left.
But it was still beautiful from the bottom. They have a little marsh walk that you stay on the platform to go look out at a lookout. Little nice adventure. And inside the house there is a little gift shop with information and more history facts.

Must see if I’m the area. The visitor center is very nice, lots of history and information is available including the history of the lighthouse and information about the wildlife in the area. There is also a small gift shop with lots of nice items to choose from. The rangers working are very informative and friendly. Our son did the jr ranger program and we stayed for a ranger program which was well organized, perfect length and very educational. We really enjoyed our stop and would recommend the stop to anyone who loves the outer banks or lighthouses.

Such a beautiful lighthouse. The living quarters were large. There is no access to the upstairs area. Lots of artifacts in the main living quarters. You can also get a unique stamp for the passport for the national state parks.

The lighthouse is managed by NPS and it in a beautiful location offering several interesting views for photography. Best night photography here would be during the new moon when it’s really dark. Even better if it’s during the months when the Milky Way is visible. I noticed a source of light pollution where I’d look for the Milky Way so I can’t say this will be a great Milky Way photo location. I think the light pollution source is fairly new.

The most underrated lighthouse on the Outer Banks. Its barely tucked away behind the trees making it feel more rural than it actually is. The grounds are neatly kept and open. The walkway allows you to view the marshes up close and is a great place to spot wildlife.

Great spot to stop and stretch your legs before you drive through the long stretch of park land. Beautiful light house and green space, with a small visitor center (no charge) and restrooms nearby. Enjoyed the short walk on the boardwalk out to the viewing tower- saw fish and crabs in the water. Didn't climb the lighthouse today (so hot!) but if you decide to go, get your ticket online before coming (otherwise you'll likely not get one). Fairly busy, but there is a good bit of parking and it's a place for only a short visit, so there is regular parking turnover.

Beautiful little spot. Careful for snakes. 😂 Don't worry, they have a lifted board walk just for that. Public restroom. Small fee for a tour and walk up the lighthouse. QR codes for convince. QR code to register your vehicle off roading. Lovely walk and views.

One of the three lighthouses featuring the classic black and white paint scheme on the Hatteras National Seashore, the Bodie Island Lighthouse was built in 1872 and stands nearly 160 feet. The grounds around the lighthouse are spectacularly maintained. Climbing to the top is by purchasing tickets in advance.

A must see on your Outer Banks trip! We ended up making it just after the store closed, but we’re still able to walk around and take pictures. We were able to see the light function as well, just before sunset.

Lovely all around. Great view from the top, although I would not recommend the climb for those who are height-averse. As explained by the guide before you go up, only one person can climb a single flight of stairs at a time and they do feel a bit rickety at times.

Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, situated at the northern edge of Hatteras Island, is a renowned destination for birdwatchers. It provides educational opportunities and a chance to observe migratory and endangered bird species. While not part of Cape Hatteras National Seashore, visitors can launch watercraft at the New Inlet Parking Lot located near the bridge connecting Bodie and Hatteras Islands. Despite being closed due to bridge construction for several years, it reopened in December 2019.
Beautiful solitude in winter. Have visited in the summer many times and finally got to experience the multitude of birds in the "dead" of winter. I sat in solitude except for the many thousands of geese, ducks and myriad other birds, for hours the only person in sight. It was very beautiful and humbling experience as the sun set over the pond and sound with the only sound that of the snow geese making a soft conversation that was simply soothing to the mind and soul.

Love this place! As part of the Blue Goose Passport program we stopped here on our way back to Corolla from Cape Hatteras. There was a really nice lady there who helped us spot some birds out on the water. The visitors center is small but they have a nice gift shop.
There is a boardwalk that we would’ve loved to have navigated but I depend on a scooter and the entrance to the boardwalk was covered in sand. I wish they would keep that clear so everyone can enjoy it. That’s the only reason they lost a star from me.

First nice place to take a driving break. Very awesome beach access across the street.

And there's a bird sanctuary with a huge walk way all the way around.
There's a store and a ranger station here as well.

Worth a stop. We attempted to do the North Pond Wildlife Trail which is listed a wheelchair accessible, however, the beginning of the trail was not maintained, there were large piles of sand on the boardwalk which did not allow my stroller to get onto the trail. I assume some wheelchairs might also have struggles getting onto the trail.
We carried the stroller and baby a bit until we reached a section that was not covered in sand. We didn't walk long but the part of the trail we did see was beautiful. Everything was flat, but the scene was peaceful.

This has amazing sunset view and sand dunes give so much time for family and kids to have fun. Loved our experience here. If you get lucky you might get a view of dolphins, seagulls and even whale! I need to find the video went we went a few years back. We did get lucky spotting whale and group of dolphins.
There is public restroom available.
Be careful as it gets windy road can get plenty of sand too.
Some places can have so much sand that it’s hard to turn around. Our car did get stuck in sand dune as we were turning to return back. We are so grateful just then two gentleman showed up in their truck and helped us get out of quick sand.
It was very generous of them, right around the thanksgiving of 2021

Amazing natural beach area with multitudes of opportunities to access and enjoy the Outer Banks in near-pristine form! There are several beach ramps and parking areas on both the beach and sound sides. Some access points have facilities such as port-o-potties and trash bins. A highlight is the historic Bodie Island Lighthouse. The bridge over Oregon Inlet has one of the best panoramic views on the OBX.

I came to see the sunset at pea island. It was so incredibly beautiful. I have been to jockeys ridge before and it is also gorgeous for a sunset. These are the pictures I took. It’s definitely something you need to see!

Pea Island’s absolutely breathtaking! The nature preserve was lovely and teeming with life. The brackish water was filled with all kinds of turtles and water fowls with their babies. The trail was a lovely walk, however, I do recommend bringing some sort of bug repellant when going during warmer weather as the bugs will literally eat you alive. There’s a small viewing deck with a binocular contraption but it’s a bit scratched up to really see anything. The beach across the nature preserve was surprisingly empty but you can walk the entire sand bar if you wanted to.
I recommend this place to everyone! You would not be disappointed.

Great for a day at the beach. Never crowded, a few parking access points with trails over the dunes. Beach is rather coarse, lots of broken shells. Definitely not a soft, fine powder sand experience, but the lack of people makes it peaceful!

• We visited on a Thursday morning in late December 2023 (after Christmas).
• We stopped by while traveling from Hatteras Light Station to Bodie Light Station.
• This stop was totally worth it. The parking lot was kind of small (maybe hold 20 cars max) and there were maybe 4 or 5 spots left when we arrived.
• Many of the people try to cross the dunes on the other side of the road (not sure if you’re supposed to be doing that anyways) but the real gem is out back into the bay.
• The visitor center is fairly large for a Wildlife Refuge and the store takes up about 1/3 of the area too. They had a bunch of merch and ones specific for pea island but also for 3 or 4 other Wildlife Refuges in the area.
• They had a few small exhibits and a few scopes to look out the large bank of back windows in the center.
• The Blue Goose Cancellation Stamp is located to the left of the door when you walk into the visitor center. At the time of our visit they were sold out of the Blue Goose Books. We’ve only seen these at like 4 or 5 of the 2 dozen-ish National Wildlife Refuges we’ve visited. If you are interested in them, the NC National Wildlife Refuge Gateway Visitor Center in Manteo had a few in stock.
• At the other end of the parking lot (also where the bathrooms are located), there is trail that leads all the way out into the bay with a overlook/observation deck. We only went about halfway as we were on a schedule. There were several other groups hiking the trail as well. Bring your binoculars. There were a few birds even for this time of year we visited. We also spotted a snapping turtle in the pond near the bathroom.
• We would definitely visit again and do the trail out back to the overlook. Worth the stop for sure. If it was this crowded on a weekday in December I can only imagine what it would be like in the warmer seasons.

I had no idea one could observe wildlife like this in the Outer Banks. To see these birds in their natural habitat was pretty awesome. We were watching them through telescopes and binoculars. Afterwards we walked across the street to the beach and picked up seashells. What an amazing find just south of Kill Devils Hill.

Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge is one of several government efforts that help retain the natural splendor of the outerbanks. Pea Island is well worth a stop of an hour or two. The visitor center is excellent, with a very knowledgeable staff that knows about the entire area. The center also contains an observation window where visitors are supplied with binoculars. Once outside again, there is a nice easy walk on a dike behind the visitor center where you can get a chance to glimpse many types of waterfowl during their migration season. The walk leads to a fairly tall observation stand which provides really good views.
And, if you are willing to cross the road (it's a bit dangerous due to the huge amount of traffic) there is the roaring beach!!!

North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island offers a diverse range of activities and exhibits, including live animal encounters, interactive displays, feedings, films, and a large shark tank holding 285,000 gallons of water. This aquarium is an excellent choice for families looking for indoor entertainment or to escape the rain. Visitors can see sea turtles, otters, jellyfish, sharks along with other marine creatures.
This place is so awesome! They have incredible interactive exhibits and great prices. They have an amazing sea otter exhibit, HUGE shark tank exhibit, reptiles and amphibians, super cool touch tanks, and the jellyfish room is transcendent! The outdoor grounds area is scenic and peaceful as well. You can spend quite a bit of time both inside and out! The staff truly care about the animals, exhibits and are very willing to share their knowledge. Do recommend getting your tickets on their website, its easy and it can be extremely busy during the tourist seasons.

We've been to a few different aquariums and this aquarium seemed to be worth the price of admissions. While it does take some time to go through and there are plenty of exhibits, the spaces are tight and narrow. We were fighting crowds and constantly around lots of people. There were a few open opportunities for me to snap a few good pics, but you can also see how crowded it can be too. Being as tight and crowded as it was, strollers were a nuisance, especially the big ones. If you have a pop-up, use it. The other thing that really annoys me at any aquarium and even most zoos, are when adults feel the need to stand in front of an exhibit for an extended period of time while children are waiting to see. I'm sure as an adult, you've already seen most of what's there, stand back and let the kids enjoy the experience. Same goes for those helicopter parents, your kids arent going to disappear if you give them a few more feet. Overall it was a decent experience for the afternoon at a decent value for the family.

Very well done exhibits. The treatment center was very interesting to visit and the staff was very knowledgeable and friendly. The state of North Carolina operates several world-class aquariums that are located throughout the stet. This Roanoke island location is one of them and it's EXCELLENT. Not only is is a great aquarium, but it's location is close to the water and there are some great water views and activities for guests. It's also a nice place for bird watching. My suggestion is to choose a less-busy day, and really enjoy yourself!

Thus aquarium was very nice. It was definitely kid friendly for several reasons.
It was big enough to keep the children engaged but not too big they lost interest. They allow strollers(there are several in other states that don't). They had a couple of interactive exhibits. A touch one and an educational one about sea turtles. They rehab sea turtles with the expectation that they will be released back to the wild.
They also have a trail and a butterfly garden on the premises that is included with your admission.
All in all, we took a 2 and 6 year old and both were entertained. I'd say that's a win!

Great opportunity to view beautiful creatures I would otherwise not see. However, I felt torn due to the fact I was a spectator. The animals should be in their natural habitat. The animal enclosures weren't very big. Their turtle rescue was good to see. They nurse injured/sick sea turtles back to health. Once they are fit, they're released back into the wild.

Great spot to check out on a rainy day or just to get the kids out of the house. Sea turtles, otters, sharks, jellyfish + more. This particular aquarium does a "trick or treat under the sea" annually around Halloween' if you buy tickets for that (in advance) you will not regret it.
We've been countless times over the years and never had a disappointing visit.

It's right on the water and has a wonderful outside area for the kids to run around, a cafe to get lunch and a beautiful dock.
The aquarium was the perfect size for my two young children age one and four.
We absolutely loved the sea turtle rehab center. My four year old liked going to the different stations with his fake sea turtle and going through the different scenarios on what what wrong and how to help it. And what was even better, the real life turtle rehab center was right next door so we could watch the real life animals being helped.
Will definitely be back!

Please go here. If you are looking for a perfect place to take your kid(s) or even a date, you will feel the magic this place has. I went with my husband to the coast but it was too windy for the beach so we found ourselves here. This little aquarium is way more vast than it looks. There are so many cool exibits. I fell in love with the turtles, played peek a boo with an alligator, saw venomous snakes, huge schools of fish, and hung out with a few sharks. At 3pm they feed the stingrays and was so fun to watch. Make this part of your trip to the coast, pack a lunch and go for a walk in the gardens to the pier. Definitely for all age groups.

Great experience for kids of all ages! Interactive exhibits were engaging. The touch pool was a big hit where you can get your finger hugged by urchins! Our sons really enjoyed the turtle lab, which was a hands-on simulation of how injured turtles can be rehabilitated. One of my favorite parts is the jellyfish room with its tall tubes of bubbles and light changing displays of floating jellies. The surrounding land outside the aquarium was also great. There was a "fossil" excavation mound, a nature trail, and a pier. I really liked the pier as it was a lovely view, ample seating, and informative panels along the pier walkway. Highly recommended.

The Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station Historic Site is a museum situated in the Outer Banks that focuses on the equipment and history of maritime rescue. The former station and its outbuildings have been converted into exhibits with hands-on displays showcasing actual artifacts used by the coast guard. Visitors can learn about magnificent rescues and the origins of the coast guard while exploring different buildings such as The Tower. Knowledgeable volunteers provide tours which even teenagers can enjoy, making it a great landmark for all to visit.
I love visiting these old places, much like visiting old fire stations. You can tour the various structures as well as the main building. There is a list of ships and models of the wrecks nearby, especially the ship sunk by a U-boat in WW1 with a fantastic rescue of most of the crew, as well as the WW2 U-boat sinking with no survivors but bodies recovered and buried here with military honors in the US. There is also a long film of the lifesaving station but we had no time to stay and watch it. This place is a great tribute to the old Life Saving Service, the Coast Guard and even similar services like the Royal Lifeboat Service. Anyone interested in the history of ship wreck rescues or even the Coast Guard should stop here. There is even a neat gift shop with a varitey of books.

Lots of information and hands-on exhibits in different buildings. Interesting to see the actual artifacts talked about in the museum located on the property.

So interesting and what a fascinating history!! The guys that were part of the Life-Saving Service were heros and just amazing. You need to visit the station.... its just amazing what those guys had to do and did!!!

Small but excellent museum with knowledgeable, friendly staff.
Very nice displays, actual items from the period, great history of the service and people who served.
I highly recommend a visit!

Fascinating place with the history of coastal lifesaving efforts, photos, memorabilia and depictions of what life was like. The heroes of the American shores. Staff was helpful with additional stories and information. We got there an hour before they closed, but could have stayed longer.

This lifesaving station is a MUST stop! Spend 1-3 hours there depending on how deep you want to go. The volunteers are very knowledgeable and the exhibits are good. This place documents the important history of the lifesaving service along the Atlantic coast, which eventually became the US Coast Guard. the kids will entire the view from the top of the building!

A must-see on your way to the Cape Hatteres Light house. An interagerl piece of history documenting the effort to save lives, just as important as the light houses. Thousands of historical artifacts from the Lyle Gun (Cannon) to breeches used to rescue seaman from clutches of death in the Graveyard of the Atlantic.

Very unpleasant atmosphere by the staff (of one) who on approach seemed reluctant, maybe hesitant to see my family enter this establishment. The attendant quoted us an
Incorrect fair for my group of 9 by $10 extra dollars. And when my elderly aunt asked if there were public restrooms for her to use. The attendant, before responding, paused & looked and said, “…no”. Which seems odd where there are 5 buildings within this attraction, there aren’t any public restrooms to use…? Surely there must be?
or maybe they’re weren’t restrooms for US to use. It’s sad that some people are ignorant & small minded with their racism to those look differently than them. They lost our business today. Sad.

Great small museum featuring a lovingly restored and maintained Life Saving Station(s). The Life Saving Service has a proud and interesting history in our nation and this is a great example of the stations that once were all along the east coast and some inland waters. Many have been lost to time, but this one has all of the original equipment and a volunteer staff dedicated to keeping this history alive.

Nice place with a video telling you about the history. Can tour almost all over the property and they have really nice staff that'll share details about the history of the area and the facility. They offered a military discount on admission tickets.

Neat little side stop on the way to Hatteras. Place where they housed the life saving sailors before the Coast Guard was imagined. Can't fathom doing the things they did to save people. Have them talk about the place, very knowledgeable. Only down was the mosquitoes, they are hungry.

Regional history is showcased at this sprawling museum featuring an 18th-century farmhouse.
A quiet weekday visit, docents available to enlighten and discuss the history here, of these shores that were among the first to host early European settlers.

This was my first time visiting and it was interesting. I liked the Native American exhibit and the school artwork down the hall on the main floor. Women's History was informative and the female inventors were very nice to see. I was greated by Ms. Susan when I walked in who gave me directions to the different exhibits in which I took the time to look through everything. Upstairs the two ladies greated me and asked if I had any questions. They seemed more than willing to answer any questions that I may have had. After the High off the Hog exhibit I knew what I was going to eat for lunch.

This museum was well worth the long drive and visit. It took us about 3 hours to see everything and there was a section that was closed off.
In addition to the regular sections of the museum they had special exhibit on the contributions of women and one called High on the Hog which was about the history of slaughtering and processing pigs. It was really interesting. Aside from those there was a section on the history of Native Americans as well as the history of the area.
The museum is fully accessible and has benches throughout. I was able to easily navigate it with my scooter. One thing that was disappointing was the first floor bathroom. There was a handicap sign on the outside but no handicap stall inside. Then when I looked a little further I found a door that said “nursing room”, when I looked inside there was a handicap toilet set up. It was strange.
The staff here are really nice and helpful. The gift shop was really nice, I spent way too much in there. I was also able to buy gifts from the local area.
Take the time to enjoy this gem of a museum!

This is our second time back to this local Museum. First time we went was pre-covid for a program which the kids had a blast at. This time was a random rainy day decision. We brought our two daughters, ages 11 and 4, to view the local history and see what's new. The museum itself is free, donation bin available and focuses mostly on local history and artifacts found from the region, but also has other exhibits that they switch out from other areas, in this case it was artifacts found in ancient middle east.
What made this visit special is that not only is the building clean and fun to walk around, but the people who work there are informative and will stop and take the time to talk with you, whether for information on the exhibits or local area, programs coming up, and a good conversation. We were even surprised to learn that this museum has a local archeologist whom we were able to speak with for a few minutes. You might think it is silly for us to be excited about that, however my oldest wants to be an archeologist and a geologist when she grows up, so her meeting this wonderful woman who talked about what she has done in her life and how to get there was like my daughter met a famous person. Her excitement when we left couldn't be contained. We were also told about a teen volunteer program within the museum in which I will be asking questions on later, as I have a very interested girl.
I'm happy that a rainy day decision became something more enjoyable than expected. Thank you!

Great place to start your visit. There's no charge to get in, but they take donations. The museum has a little shop inside.
Restrooms are clean, elevator available, wheelchair ramp outside the building. There's Spanish guide available.
Elizabeth City it's very small, but you can walk to Seven Sounds Brewery, and there are a couple of restaurants to walking distance. Free parking available across the museum.

Take a quick pop-in if it's your first visit to the area. I expected a larger display regarding the indigenous tribes of the area. I found this one very small in comparison to their relevance.
Great Historical Site. Free to visit and walk around. You can walk around on your own or take the tour for $1 per person. Handicap persons will not be able to go inside each building because they are small (like in the 1800's) put you can see the whole inside from the doorway and hear what the tour guide is saying (still getting the full experience). As a handicap person I really enjoyed everything about the site.

I absolutely love visiting Somerset Plantation! It has a fascinating history you can feel while walking the peaceful grounds. Even the massive trees are a site to see and there is a path to Pettigrew park at the back left of the Plantation. You can pay a small fee for a tour or walk the grounds for free which I really appreciate the option as my family prefers to do things at our own pace.

Small, quaint town. Was the first capital of NC until the capital was moved to New Bern. People are friendly. Historical Sites and homes. Eating out in the downtown area is a little pricey. Friendly people, although we saw a very few protesters wanting to take down a statue of course. (Eye roll). Otherwise worth a quick day trip.

I am looking forward to moving there one day and opening my own business. Edenton is a wonderful place. Streets are clean and grounds are well kept. People are great and friendly. I love coming there to get away from the Rot Belt I live in. My town Murfreesboro has not future due to politics. But Edenton has embraced what is needed to be done and has done so with vigar. I look forward to obtaining a home in Edenton one day. Thank you Edenton for you showing what can be done when you have a good and honest government.

What a beautiful town. Enjoyed the gardens at the Cupola House with my grandson, browsed the shops and ended the day with lunch at a pub.
This was so amazing. The history inside is awesome. I did not know that Edenton had so much untaught history. What the ladies done by sending a letter to England was unheard of and never taught. The African Builders that built the town also were never taught. My wife and I learned a lot while enjoying a guided tour on the tram. I recommend the guided tram tour.there is so much to do and see. It's a good day trip.

I enjoyed happening along this place. We stopped in Edenton to see the historic waterfront and found this treasure.
I had no idea who Penelope Barker was. I had never heard about her tea party resolution. I found the museum very informative. It was neat how you can see the inside of the walls. (the ceiling is sagging in there because of the missing wall pieces).
There are period correct dresses and slippers worn by the people that lived in this home. There are lots of local books for sale. A neat one that caught my eye was a book about all of the historical houses in Edenton, and their individual history.
The museum is free to visit.
We will definitely be back to explore this town more

Museum was as expected. Docents were very helpful. There is a lot of history on this town which they try to preserve and cling to.
There's a lone cypress tree still standing next to the museum's dock that if you stand still, you could feel the tradesmen and slaves that passed through here. I tried not to look at it too often. If you're a sensitive, you'll know what I mean.

My wife and I went to the Christmas Open House on December 3. It turned out to be a great visit. The house is pretty amazing and many of the furniture pieces are truly exceptional. There were volunteers in each room that had information about the space and the items displayed there. As part of the Open House there were carriage rides, music and demonstrations of colonial period dances with the dancers in period attire.
On the property there is a second historic house which we were able to tour. Also, there is a museum on the property. In the main display room of the museum there are some really nice pieces of furniture, painting, samplers and other things.
It was an afternoon well spent and we are really glad we went.

My wife and I stopped by Historic Hope Plantation today and received a warm welcome. We received a first class tour of the visitor center which was very informative and then Barbara took us on a two hour tour of the plantation house, the kitchen and the King-Bazemore House. This house is a gem of NC history and must be preserved. It is beautiful inside and out and I felt as though I had literally stepped back in time 200-225 years. It was a walk through history. Pat was a great guide.
Tranquil park filled with moss-covered oaks & offering hiking, swimming & camping.
The museum is awesome. They have quite a bit of different animal specimen local to the region and identify the type. The campground seems nice for RVs with full hookups. The tent sites have level rocks to put your tent, some with water views. Lots of trails through the woods and marshes. The tiny houses look cute too! They take very good care of the grounds, no trash laying around!

A beautiful, hidden gem in eastern NC! Campsites were well kept and provided good privacy from other sites (not too close to one another). The scenery is unique and serene. The trails were well maintained and easy for all skill levels.
The only disappointment was that the nature center was closed.
We will definitely return!

My husband and I spent the weekend in the primitive campground. The pit toilets were not what expected in a very good way. They were clean and did not stink. Sites are well spaced and offer good privacy. Firewood bundles were available in a self pay shed by the first pit toilet for $8/bundle. Bring cash. Bundles are not big at all. Overall we enjoyed ourselves very much and will be coming back again!!
Jessica Gallop — Google review
Took my Grandson there for his first overnight in a tent. We had a blast. The "Primitive Campground " area is where we stayed. It was about $30 for 2 nights.
The site had a gravelled pad, the size I'm guessing at about 10' x 18', on which you pitch your tent. There was also a table with bench seats big enough for 6 people, a fire pit, a wood grill, and a post to hold a lantern.
There was no electricity or water tap at the site, but there was a toilet facility, a hut with firewood, and a water spigot located within a short walking distance from us.
The campsites are numbered, and you can drive up to it.
There is plenty of information on the website regarding walking trails, etc. The office was actually closed due to staffing issues on the Saturday that we arrived, but there was a kiosk outside that had free maps and information. Later that day a Park Ranger came to our site to check on us and explain the rules.
Even though the night was very cold and the wind was wicked on the shoreline when we tried fishing, lol. We had a great time, and will be going there again lots more.

We found this to be a most excellent NC State Park. It opened in 2020, just before COVID, so it is still like new. The campsites were easy to back into with comfortable distance from your neighbor. Pads were level with water, power and sewer. There were great trails with great views of the river. The park also had primitive campsites near the river.

This is a great park. Lots are spaced out & large, after another yr grass should be tall enough to give you privacy from your neighbor. Host was very friendly & knowledge. Bath house was very clean, also has a family restroom & shower. We were here 5 nights, lot 6. We have T Mobile & had 5 bars, so streaming movies were no problem. Unfortunately we had no luck fishing. It's a good little walk to swimming area & park has plenty of picnic tables set up. Oh, if you walk your dog at night, take a flashlight. No street lights! Would highly recommend this park.

A beautiful place pretty far from most towns so bring your snacks and drinks. Amazing natural scenery with very rustic coastal beachy area. Perfect for a day out with kids, pets, and whomever you pick to enjoy a walk and some fresh air. Goose creek is unique in its appeal and must be experienced in person to understand
Justin Howard — Google review
This park is clean and the people are friendly. There are many hikes within the park, but the bugs and horseflies in the area are brutal! Personally, we felt the sound was dirty from everywhere we viewed and it and would not swim in it.
Most campsites have no trees surrounding it, so it is HOT HOT when the sun is high in the sky. The sites are huge and spacious and spread out from others.
There isn’t a whole lot to do in the area with children. We did a day trip to Aurora to dig fossils by taking the ferry over. We also walked/toured historic Washington and we loved that and so did our boys. We enjoyed the NC Estuary, Down Town on Main for lunch, Scoops for ice cream and the Pitt Brewery!

We stayed at primitive site 04. The sites are well spaced. There is plenty of parking for 2 SUV. They sell firewood ($8/pack -June '23) There's a fishing dock and a place to launch kayaks. The restroom is clean; it is a pit type. There's water access throughout. Trails are fairly good. Mosquitoes are rampant around evening times. Overall, it's great when you like outdoor peace and privacy among other campers. Gas station and convenience stores are about 10min out.

Beautiful camping experience on the riverbank. Site #13 was beyond gorgeous abound with Spanish moss, wild blueberries, and deer. Cool to see the diverse ecosystems as we walked multiple trails and swam. Super kid friendly just use plenty of bug spray. I didn't realize we were being bit until I got home. Also, anticipate no showers if you are primitive camping.
The riverbanks are made of brackish water, fairly shallow, and are comfortable to swim in. Just look out for tree roots underfoot. Water shoes will help.

When I travel, I like to try the local flavor of the area. I went online to checkout restaurants in the area and came across Deadwood. It piqued my interest that they had amusements in this area of the state. Needless to say, the amusements are in various stages of repair. There is a nice playground for the kids to enjoy. The restaurant was the main reason to go. It was not a disappointment. Excellent food. I had the steak sandwich and my friend had the burger. The most tender juiciest meat ever. Cirsty provided excellent service Definitely a go-to in the area.

This is one of the TOP places to visit in North Carolina. Hidden gem in the unique small town of Bear Grass. The staff and locals are so friendly and the food here is great. Family atmosphere with lots to do. Expect wait times, but it flies by because you can grab coffee, play on the playground and game room, ride the train, and take photos around the western themed grounds. Expect a fun round of putt-putt and a ride on the mini roller coaster after renovations are completed.

The theme park is not up & running, unfortunately is run down. The theme park I believe could be a great place again if someone would take the initiative to fix it up. I think kids between the ages of 2 to 7 or 8 would love it. IF it was fixed up, running, and everything functional. There is a nice restaurant there but we didn't eat while walking around there...though there menu items did look good!

Saw rhis place listed on a website for things to do. It's tucked away in weird location but man was I surprised when I walked through the front door. Pretty cool spot to be honest. We took a day here while our boys had a day out of school, and I was amazed. I have to be honest, when I heard we had a wait time of over an hour, I was ready to leave. Thankfully, we did not. There is so much to do. Even the kids, ages 9 and 11, stayed busy playing on the very nice playground. The husband and I were able to enjoy some adult beverages while enjoying the scenery. Due to the timing, it was Halloween themed and very decorative. I am not sure who had the most fun, the kids or adults. When we did go to eat, I hadn't even realized we had been there nearly 2 hours. The atmosphere and service in the restaurant went above what is to be expected. Even with it being so busy, we were given top-notch service. Drinks stayed full, and we were constantly checked on. I can't believe I've lived in Eastern NC my whole life and never heard of this place. It is definitely worth the wait, and I will definitely be going back. I really can't say enough good things about this place.

This was the first visit for us, but we will definitely be back! We never even heard of this place until today when my father in law invited us to go. When we first arrived, I thought we were at the wrong place. It looked like an attraction for kids, but on closer inspection we found a replica of an old west town "Deadwood " It had old style buildings, tee pees, a small old west train, coy pond and other things to enjoy. We had a 30-minute wait due to the crowd, but it went quickly with all the sites to see. Once inside, we were given a very nice table off to ourselves. We had a party of 7, so it worked out well. 5 of us ordered the steak, and it was delicious! We also had blooming onion, fried pickles, fried green tomatoes (my favorite), and mozzarella sticks! 1 had the Cowboy burger, and 1 had Chicken Quesadillas, they said were good also. So I will say $273 for everything, but there was a tremendous amount of food on that table, and everyone had a doggie plate for later. If you're looking for good steak and an interesting place to eat, check it out.

Took my mother and my Aunt for a Mother’s Day dinner a day early. Arrived about 4:30 and it was already starting to fill up. We have never been here before and I wanted to go somewhere unique. It looks like they are under a lot of improvements as the train and mini golf were out of service, but the place was still really neat! You can see they are making improvements and I’m looking forward to going back later in the year to see the progress.
The food was really good. Portions looked small but were very filling. It all came out HOT too. My Aunt is particular about that. You have GOT to try the homemade chips... if anyone remembers “Tater Skins” potato chips... these are it and WAY better! We had them plain and they were delish.
My pork chop was very juicy and the spice was perfect. Cole slaw was delish too. Not drowning in sauce. My mom had the ribs and were fall off the bone amazing. She said the apples tasted like apple pie and were the perfect complement. My Aunt had the rib eye steak and she wished she could make hers like theirs it was so tender and flavorful. Grilled to perfection. The staff were all extremely friendly, but not overwhelmingly looming. They checked on us often but we’re never intrusive. We even stopped into the general store. The ice cream was pretty good and had a nice selection of flavors. All in all the experience was a pleasant one and I hope they bring the dinner theatre back as that was what brought me to look into it further. Thanks!

Everything was WONDERFUL!! This was my first time visiting and the food was good. Our waiter and waitress were EXCELLENT.
What a gem of a museum, located centrally in town. Super friendly staff and the museum itself is laid out well too. Once you take your tour, be sure and wonder over to the dig piles just across the street and see if you cam find yourself some fossils

Great little location with a friendly staff and free entry. The star of the show is the large pit outside the museum where you can sift for shark teeth, shells, and other ocean remnants. There’s a bathroom inside the museum, but no easy food or drink locations, so pack a lunch. The museum sells sifting trays which are invaluable and reasonably priced.
A few hours of sifting between two adults and a couple of kids netted about two hundred teeth.
Donations are welcomed, and I recommend dropping in a few bucks for the experience.

Excellent place to take kids or even go as adults. You can spend hours digging for your own shark teeth. And it's free! They do have a nice gift shop with reasonably priced items. The museum itself didn't entertain my 7 yr old that much, though she loved the gem stones, but is probably of more interest to older kids. She loved the digging though! Bring your own supplies for digging, though you can certainly just use your hands. There isn't a whole lot else in Aurora but Washington isn't far away & has some great shops & restaurants. Definitely worth the drive.

Took awhile to find this place but I'm so glad we went. It was so much fun!! We bought shovels and sifters from the museum. Found quite a few little shark teeth. It's free to dig in the pit. The people working in the museum were very friendly. I wish I didn't live so far away, I would be here all the time.

My great grandson ( 5 ) loved the Aurora Fossil Museum which is free. Then we went across the street where there are areas to dig for shark teeth and fossils. He found lots of shark teeth and made several friends. It was a fun and educational experience

Absolutely enjoyed our first outing at Aurora Fossil. They have 3 separate areas for you to explore to find fossils and an awesome exhibit of teeth, bones, history, and geographic measures of how these are located, found, and still lay.
This museum is free along with pit searching. They do rely on donations- so if you do go for a daily outing, be sure to bring some cash or your card for a fair and even exchange for both parties.
They also have some pretty cool things in their gift shop, including meg teeth you can purchase for your forever collection!
I mean, look at all I found in 5 hrs of searching!
Over 300 shark teeth, alligator teeth, shark vertebrae amongst other vertebrae, and some BONES! I love finding bones.
They have small sifters they sell on site, and after searching with both my hands and a borrowed sifter from another goer for a bit, I've found that sifting does help you not miss some of the bigger teeth.
As an avid hounder for gems, minerals, and fossils, I adore what this little museum along the aurora streets has to offer. Can't wait to come back again! There's another tooth in that gift shop with my name on it 😉

Cute little place we've been to Aurora a few times in the last 5 years. It's a great place for a day getaway. They people are so nice. The small museum is very insightful and educational. They have great options in the gift shop even stuff to buy if u forgot anything like a sifter or a shovel. There are 3 areas to dig, it's clean, right down town, and plenty of parking and seating to eat if you bring a nice lunch. If your looking to do something new, unique, to get away, and enjoy some quiet this is just right for you.

We really enjoyed the prearranged tour and digging for our own shark's teeth across the street! The museum is small, but very well kept with some excellent specimens!

We spent the day at this awesome place yesterday and had the best time! We spent about 3 hours sifting through the "sunny" pit and found 62 shark teeth, some of which were quite large. The museum across the street is very nice and informative as well. If you love looking for teeth/fossils, definitely go! Highly recommend!

We went to the festival. The kids were able to dig for sharks teeth and we found 2. We went to the museum and it was pretty cool actually. The museum is very small but lots of really neat fossils. It's interesting to see the size of the sharks teeth up close and personal.

Getting to see the Aurora fossil museum while at North Carolina Fossil festival was a treat.
The Museum is smaller but tells the story of the area and the mine and has a lot of great megalodon and prehistoric shark fossils.
It's definitely worth a visit especially if your at the festival!

Wow! What a treasure! This was our first visit after hearing a lot about it and we can’t wait to go back. The 2 men working the gift shop/museum were super friendly and knowledgeable. Everyone we talked to in the pit was also very nice and respectful. I would suggest packing snacks and drinks because you won’t want to quit!

My family and I loved it! Very small, and kind of in the middle if nowhere, but the fossil pit was great and the guy in the museum was very friendly and knowledgeable. You WILL find lots of shark teeth and other fossils. Yes, megalodon teeth have actually been found in the pits! Would love to see this place expand as it has potential to be something fantastic. Worth a day trip from the OBX!
Update: The last pic is a display my daughter made of some of the shark teeth and fossils we found on our trip to Aurora!

An awesome experience! A ways off the beaten path, but worth it. Learning about the entire mining process was fascinating. The displays of fossil shark teeth, actually found in the mine overburden, was mind blowing. We only spent 1/2 an hour looking in the open air pit, but managed to find about a dozen sharks teeth (small lemon and tiger), pieces of coral and some ray mouth plate pieces. It's free. The guides were very helpful. I can't really say enough about what a great time we had. Wished we had more time to spend there.

What a fun place! Great for the whole family! When we arrived, we noticed people sifting through dirt in an empty lot. The knowledge staff told us they were digging for fossils, and we can try our luck for free. Inside, there is merch available and a mural depicting the mining project that supplies the material to dig. The next room displays thousands of shark teeth, sand dollars, clam shells, scallops and tons of other sea life. Then there is a cutaway depiction of the mining operation that is a couple miles down the road. There’s also a video explaining the mining operation and the company’s commitment to re-vegetation to leave the land as they found it. It’s worth the trip. We will return soon.

I stayed at a very nice beautiful drive to site near a swampy pond. I loved the site. There was a little barking from dogs nearby and traffic noise but that’s to be expected. You don’t feel like you are in the city but you are. I did not see any showers hence the rating. I would suggest you to bring firewood it was hard to gather here. Very nice trails. I’m glad I gave it a chance. You really can’t beat the price for the site. I slept well no creepy stuff.

First time there today, it's a beautiful spot with plenty of room to fish, walk and have a nice little nature walk there! They may had it posted some where but I didn't see a sign for it, and that's the reason for the four star rate, but I found out that the place is infested with poison ivy which I'm highly allergic to and I found out when another passer by stopped to say hi and told be to be care about the sides of the walk paths and fishing spots that everywhere is completely ate up with the stuff.....I think there should have been alot more signs posted about it for people like me who are allergic to that plant.

Nice to have some nature in the city. It has miles of trails and fishing ponds. The ponds are stock regularly and you do have to buy a fishing permit to fish at the ponds.
They also let you camp here but you have to reserve at the park office.
The trails can go pretty far along the Tar river. Spring and fall is the best time to come

The buildings and campus of ecu are so nice. The bricks on the ground are all pristinely laid in perfectly organized fashion. I wish the people matched this. The people who take your food orders in this building are Rude. No one told them they would be taking orders from college students all day. Maybe the ecu students are so rude to them back that’s why they act like that. The food is unhealthy there too. Ecu was a ‘party school’ so I thought. Yea not anymore. Fun is not in the vocabulary of the ecu student body. There are next to none student events on campus. No parties around campus either. No fellow students or neighbors who wanted to party either. Ok? It’s not the same place. I didn’t even get credit for a few classes I took here one of which the teacher didn’t even show up to! And I have a disability so it’s hard for me to even get to class. The teachers will give too hard of assignments, and then if you don’t get a good grade you are “partying too hard”. Actually, it’s called teaching, and your goal is intrinsic learning. You have to care if the students learn or not. I did pristine work for them and got substandard grades. And Just go down the street from ecu. Wow! What a great place for your kids to go to college! Safe and family friendly. They need to clean that place up. The girls if you were expecting ‘fun’ girls (or guys) think again. The party school thing is a fun veneer but the student body does not capitalize on this potential. The nursing students didn’t get the message that their job is going to be nurturing, and being sensitive and loving to other people. Ecu has A LOT OF WORK TO DO. It all starts with the leadership. Some things are nice, like the piano in the main student center. And the high quality printer in the library. In the tour to tour the campus, the girl said it was bad luck to walk under the fountain in the middle of campus or you wouldn’t graduate. Why would you tell the prospective students that? She also said she only went to one party her whole time at ecu. Ok why didn’t you? Ecu the campus itself is great. Some of the staff are real nice.

An unnamed frat is claimed to be racist. Most students under age drink. There have been rats in roaches in the dorm bathrooms. Most of the dorm bathrooms are used for under age class-men drinking. Also, most of them have fake ID’s. The bar security in town is terrible because they don’t efficiently check if ID’s are real. The ecu staff is very friendly. I do think the bars in Greenville need proper training on how to spot fake ID’s. This university is good academically but non academically it is very toxic. The frats don’t hold responsibility for drinking. They let drunk people get on the roof on the frat house which is dangerous. Every day, I hate it because some students that are idiots alarm our first line.

ECU (East Carolina University) is one of the best University in United States. Professors are great, experienced, friendly and more realistic in terms of teaching real-world scenarios. Professors, Graduate Admin office folks and Chair person are always available and willing to help students for providing guidance that they need. Professors have PhD, and many of them have dual degrees. I was very much impressed and surprised the way they teach students using real-world technological examples. Assigning any software development, computer science engineering or computer networking projects as a group helps a lot. It helps students to interact each other and gain more experience from each other. Professors are even available after classes and ready to spend 1:1 time with students. I can't wait to see this University to be named Number #1 in the United States. Students are very talented and realistic.

As an out-of-state student, I was let down. Probably because I had the most generic and incompetent student advisor by the name of Jason Denius. Instead of giving me straight answers he kept talking in theories which wasted time and I lost interest. The school could use an upgraded curriculum until then it's not offering its student the best.

I attended this university for a degree in Business administration. My experience there was very positive. I thought the administration staff were helpful, the professors I had were knowledgeable and eager to help students who asked for it. My advisor was pretty accessible and helpful whenever I needed to talk or ask for guidance. The only thing I thought could use some improvement is the lack of diversity among the professors. During my entire time there as a student I only had 2 African American teachers. That needs to be addressed.

The food was AMAZING but the bartender was our server for my bday dinner and she was less than ideal. Her drinks were amazing, esp the blackberry margarita lol, but she was rather rude at the tail end. We had a large group, she didn't ask if we wanted separate checks, she just dropped one very large check at the table and disappeared. Then she was rude/curt to my friends when they finally found her to separate the check, she treated them like they were wasting her time. The food was OUTSTANDING, that's why I gave 4 stars, it would be 5 if not for her very unprofessional behavior. But if she ends up being my server again, I'm probably going to ask for someone else.
The New Bern Firemen's Museum is a historical site that dates back to 1955 and showcases the oldest fire company in the state as well as the Great Fire of '22. It is a must-see attraction when visiting New Bern, offering knowledgeable guides who provide an extensive history of the town beyond just fire memorabilia. The museum provides details about how the department has evolved over time and sheds light on the town's people and their way of life.

The North Carolina History Center at Tryon Palace is a modern and family-friendly museum that offers hands-on displays about NC history. Visitors can explore the exhibits, watch rotating films, listen to depictions from individuals in James City, and interact with various gadgets. The museum also features a waterfront cafe and a store for visitors to enjoy. It's an informative place of historical contentment where one can learn about the state's past through guided tours and educational experiences.
Fans of history will enjoy this museum and the Tyron Palace tour. The tour of the interior was about an hour long. I enjoyed our excellent guide “the Englishman” who was both knowledgeable and comedic. The grounds are well kept and I enjoyed walking the gardens on a sunny but chilly December day. Not sure that I would recommend this for very young children, but historically curious kids who are entertained by learning would likely enjoy this visit. The gift shop has a nice selection of interesting trinkets and books. The indoor museum galleries offer interesting facts and perspectives on the natural and human history of the area. I spent about 3 hours here, including the 1 hr palace tour, as an individual. I would visit again to read the galleries in further detail.

This ice cream is by far the best! Take the tour and pet the baby jersey cows, they are so sweet and ❤️ loving. Knowledgeable staff and very informative tour. Will be back!

This is a must visit dairy and ice cream shop. They have the best ice cream I’ve ever tasted. This is a great place to take kids to tour a dairy farm and have a fun outing with the family. Our favorite flavors are butter pecan and salted caramel. Highly recommend 🙌🍦
Green-conscious craft brewery with solar-powered taproom, tours & a lively, drinks-only beer garden.
Love this taproom! Great selection of beer. They even make a hard seltzer for my buddy that has to avoid carbs --- and it was pretty darned good! The bartender was very helpful and friendly.

Love Mother Earth Brewing. They do great imperials. All the beers are pretty good, but dam the 2021.. is amazing. Nice location. Inside and outdoor seating. Dog and kid friendly. You can't taste the be whiskey there but you can buy the local chocolate with whiskey there. Yummy.

Delicious caramel latte! I asked for a small and they gave me a huge cup… I’m not complaining though! I love that they had milk alternatives. The place is gorgeous and instagrammable with dark backgrounds. There are a couple of books to read, they have tables and old-time sofas. The barista was very nice, I’m surprised how she seem to be the o lot one working and she still managed to work efficiently. Definitely recommend and will definitely visit again!

We stopped at Mother Earth Brewing on our way home from the beach. They don't serve food, so we got a pizza to go and ate here with our dog. Staff were super friendly and very nice to Alex. They have some really great beers to try out with our lunch. They also have a nice outdoor patio area that the dog really liked. Overall, a great place and we'll stop here again next time passing through the area.

First time we had ever gone. We meet family and friends from out of town there to catch up. It was a Thursday night so not too busy. We were able to order pizza from across the street and they delivered it to our table. Mother Earth’s Tap Room has QR codes at the table to see their options. We decided to order a growler to share. We were told we could not drink it there. We got it anyway and a full pour of Long haired freaky people an Irish red ale. I’m not a big beer drinker but I did like it. I have tried many of their other beers and my husband enjoys their whiskey. Definitely check it out if you are in the area.

Great experience we each did a flight and we’re able to taste a wide selection of their beers. Would certainly go back. Beers were clean and well made. The feel of the tap room was nice, bartender was great. We also bought a bottle of gin we can’t get near where we live. Need to go back and see their distillery

If you don't drink but your friends do, this is the bar for you!!! The bar stools are so comfortable you will be able to wait for them for hours!!!! Seriously if you are a little bit larger than average you will be comfortable sitting in this brewery. I hear the beer is pretty good too.

Super cool space with a great selection of beer. This isn’t a brewery you go to and don’t find something you like. Loved the vintage modern styling and the artwork. Bartender was very helpful. The LEED gold certification is pretty awesome as well. Would highly recommend and go back!

I can never get enough of this place. My wife and I stumbled upon a Mother Earth beer in the local bottle shop by pure accident. It was an beer aged in bourbon barrels which we could not not try. We fell in love. A while later we were on a trip to Eastern NC and decided to go a few miles out of the way to visit the brewery - great decision.
The brewery is alot more than than just a brewery. Great beers, not spirits are definitely available to enjoy but Mother Earth has done so much more to stimulate the community. There are great restaurants near by to enjoy and many other things. Our evening was spent walking the area, finding great food to take back to the brewery and enjoy with some fabulous beers.
A few of our favorites are in the silent night series. Perfectly aged beers in bourbon barrels and nothing else matters. They have one that is aged in Blanton's barrels that is to die for. I have not had a bad beer here yet! And the servers were fantastic too.
One complaint...They discontinued the Fig and Raisin beer from the windowpane series. Mother Earth - if you read this PLEASE bring it back!!!

Great brewery. I liked their pilsner and my wife liked the flight of sours she had. The bet garden was cute with some bar games.
The hallway to the bathrooms had windows overlooking the brewery and one of the canning machines. Was cool to watch that work thru a small batch.
But what brought us to check out their operation was their distillery's gin. Never understood how people used to drink gin straight, now I do. It's aromatic, smooth, just needs a splash of vermouth or tonic.

Great brewery with lots of space and good beers. Strawberry fields forever was a different and tasty ipa. Dog and people friendly with a cool vibe. We stayed at the motor lodge down the street and it very walkable. They are doing great things to revamp Kinston.

Stylish taproom and excellent selection of craft beers. There is a neat garden outside with towering hops! I really enjoyed my flight of IPAs. I just wish I lived closer and could be a regular!
Educational museum containing artifacts telling the story of the Civil War in the United States.
Very interesting and detailed museum about a Civil War ship and the battles in the area during the time. We spent nearly 2 hours going through this museum reading and enjoying what this gem had to offer! I'd highly recommend a visit, a low entrance fee and we'll done displays kept us reading and enjoying it from the moment we walked in till we stepped out.

Interesting museum, definitely worth a visit before or after the CSS Neuse replica nearby.
On the second floor there is an original Model 1851 US Army Officer Saber, which is the same saber that today’s Marine NCO Sword is patterned from. Very interesting for a Marine to see.

Very cool museum. We learnt a lot about the story of the boat itself, the Civil War and those times in the South of the US. Very well presented. Then, you can visit the replica of the boat at a walking distance from the museum.

Such a delightful visit here! The attendants were so warm, welcoming, and explained everything thoroughly. We started our visit by watching a brief video. It truly was an informative precursor to our self guided tour, around every corner was lots to be discovered.

This is one of the best local museums I've ever visited. There were lots of displays about the area during the Civil War. There were great exhibits about what life was like for the soldiers serving on the Neuse. They made good use of video as well. Great place to take your kids or grandkids.

I love history and this is a great place to go to. I never realize how big the ironclad ships until I saw the CSS Neuse.

We stopped here as a tourist site as we were passing through the area. I didn't think we would be here long, but the interpretive center is so well organized in setting the stage and telling the narrative we were here for a good hour and a half. It is a hidden gem and worth the stop.

Very cool exhibit. Ironclad and navies aren't generally thought of in context of the Civil War. This really put some meat on the bones.

This was a extremely well done museum about the CSS Neuse as well as local battles and the impact on the greater community. You can easily spend well over an hour here. Entrance fee is only $5.

History of the Civil War in the strangest places. To see the CSS Neuse iron clad ship in Kinston was a special treat for us. The Museum is laid out nicely and worth the visit.

Very well done. Have seen the CSS Neuse since I was a wee one and glad it is in a protected environment. The movie was well done.
