Acclaimed winery offering a tasting room & expansive grounds in tranquil surroundings.
My sister got a flight of sweets, and I got a flight of dry reds. Enjoyed them all! Definitely not as a dry as some I've had, but still enjoyable. Cute little shop for souvenirs and trinkets. We also enjoyed a glass of their riesling.

Spending this past Saturday at the Spring Wine Extravaganza event at the Winery at Holy Cross Abbey was such fun! Even tho the morning started out rainy, they did a great job of providing a spacious tent to be under to get out of they way of rain drops. By the time the activity started, the rain was over and there was delicious food prepared by the culinary department of Canon City High school to to please your pallet. Lots of great wine, enjoyable live music and a warm fire going on inside the gift shop. A warm and welcoming place to meet friends and meet new people and bring home some extra wine and gifts from the gift shop to enjoy. You've got to make time to stop here when you're in the area or to enjoy a glass of wine to unwind at the end of the day.

So much fun! Such good wine! Great atmosphere, great people. A little hard to find but we got there. Tour the Abbey while you are there.

Loved doing the VIP tasting here we were able to try almost all of the wines one was already gone gone and they were all very good, the meat and cheese platter is actually plenty of food the two of us hadn’t eaten lunch yet and we’re definitely not hungry after. The grounds are wonderful and the ambiance pairs well. 10/10 would recommend 😊

My fiance and I had never really experienced wines before, so while we were in Colorado we decided to have a wine tasting experience.
We booked a VIP Tour and this was one of the best experiences we've had during our time here in Colorado. Tara, our guide, was extremely knowledgeable and just an overall fantastic person to talk to while sipping wine. The wines were great, the conversations were fantastic, we even walked out with a bottle. We will definitely be back!

Loved this small winery. Just right for a quick stop during my trip to Colorado Springs. Enjoyed the tastings in the patio area in the fall breeze.
Dora Jean Flores — Google review
We didn't make a reservation here, but were seated fairly quickly on the patio. We requested to do a wine tasting and although the lady that helped us was nice, it took over an hour to sample 12 wines. She brought out 3 bottles to sample at a time, but then went back inside for 15-20 minutes (to chat with her co-workers) before coming back outside with the next 3 tastings. That makes sense if you're poured a full glass of wine (for time to enjoy it), but it doesn't take 20 minutes to take 3 sips of wine! We were talking with the 2 guys at the table sitting next to us who were also wondering why they don't just do the tasting inside at the counter like most other wineries do - unless you request to sit outside? There was only 2 other customers there while we were. It's like we were all seated outside together on the chilly patio (intentionally) so that we wouldn't interrupt their conversation inside. My wife and I have done tastings at over 100 wineries, and it's never taken over an hour (to do a tasting) - even during peak hours. We generally do a tasting, then buy a bottle of our favorite wine (off the list) to sit and enjoy for awhile. Even though this was an unusual experience, we did enjoy the Colorado Divinity very much and purchased a few bottles to take with us. We just wouldn't recommend you going here if you're on a timeline or have other scheduled stops on your agenda for the day.

Stopped here on our way out of town after a day of hiking. So glad we drove by and saw the Abbey!
The scenery is gorgeous, and so nice to sit on their patio and enjoy some wine.
We each bought a few bottles, I bought one of the Norton and the Sav Blanc. I was seriously impressed with the Norton, I don’t enjoy red wine. The sweet wines were well done, I just don’t like sweet wine in general.
The staff was so knowledgeable, recalling all the details of how each wine was made. They were also all very friendly and kind, really capping off a wonderful experience.
Overall, will be stopping here on my next time in town!

We love love love the wine tasting! Tara was our hostess and took her time to explain everything to us and to teach us about the wines. Not only that, she took time to explain the history of the whole place to us.
As far as "covid" goes, you can feel safe here as all interactions inside the store are socially distanced and the wine tasting itself is done outside on the patio. If you come in cooler weather, they also have patio heaters.
This is a "must do"!!
Joe Day — Google review
Very nice atmosphere for outdoor wine tasting. A tasting fee of $8 to try 12 wines. Wines also sold by the glass. Good wines, great friendly service. I won't rate wines because it is such a personal taste thing. You should visit and try for yourself. A good vendor was on site during my visit serving pizza.

My wife and I decided to stop by here on a 100+ degree day after a hike around the Royal Gorge. I was super happy with my selection of their sweet wine flight. It was extremely refreshing, which is an odd thing to say about wine. But it was just what I needed after a hot day. Safe to say I’m always on the lookout for their wines in store. Especially their Sangre de Christo Nouveau.
Chris Miller — Google review
Stopped there, they charge $14 for 4 tastings. If you select your own flight of 4 they don't tell you ahead of time that they will upcharge you $2/tasting for premium wines. Instead you find this out at check out. Save yourself some money and don't do a tasting, it's not worth it.
Rosemount Museum is a Victorian mansion that was constructed in 1893 and boasts 37 rooms furnished in period style. The museum offers guided tours led by knowledgeable docents, volunteers, and staff who provide insightful information about the lifestyle of its former owners. It's an impressive testament to the love and charm of Pueblo, with a 2000-gallon water tank installed in the attic and an Otis elevator - perfect for home builders looking for inspiration.
If possible, I would give this place 6 or more stars. Super friendly staff did a great job giving us a perfect tour of this incredibly beautiful building. The overall experience was much more than we expected, and we are thrilled we decided to go. Not only is the home incredible, but seeing an Egyptian mummy on the 3rd floor was quite an unexpected bonus at end of the tour.
Dan Shelley — Google review
I just finished my private tour with tourguide Shirley who was an absolute treat and full of so much knowledge of the home. I was absolutely taken aback by the beauty of this place. Ive toured several other victorian mansions but this one takes the cake. Every room is in pristine condition and the beauty of each room is breathtaking. I wont give details because every person deserves to visit and see it for themselves. I will say the dining room was the glimmering diamond of the house and my personal favorite. I will be returning very soon with others!

Extremely well preserved mansion. Didn't expect to see this level of 19th century comfort in Pueblo CO. Our guide " Seamus" brought us back to the 1890s to relive the Thatcher's life. Great docent!!

As being from the south with our plantations and big estate's this is so amazing....to have built this from such humble beginnings. This is real America. Sounds to me like this guy was the only one in the territory that could be trusted. He had land to texas 250 miles away It kind of sounds like job but without the trials......God is amazing... thanks😊 for the trip!!@@!!..... ps I hope to come back thanks

Didn't get to go in as they just closed.
Took pictures and will post them later.
Fabulous building from the outside with a Carriage house in back on the next street.
Definitely a have to go back moment.

An absolute historical treasure located in the heart of Pueblo. This mansion with its 25,000+ sq.ft. of beauty is as good as it gets as historical mansions go. Also, a very informative tour with people who really care about this mansion and its history.
David Martinez — Google review
I haven't been here since I did field trip in middle school in the '80s lol. I forgot how amazing this little museum is in the amount of history it has for our cool little town of Pueblo. Really enjoyed my tour. Highly recommend doing this, especially if you've never done it or it's been a while.
Richard Pellecchia II — Google review
Absolutely fabulous museum in quiet park of the city. Our docent was exceptionally thorough and explained things in detail to paint a picture of life for the Thatcher family. The artwork and surprises throughout the house were amazing and the full tour of the home is impressive. One of the best museums like it in Colorado, well maintained and kept to honor the home and the details the family housed in it.
Amanda McGregor — Google review
The Docents, volunteers, tour hosts and staff were beyond incredible. They enjoy being in that home and sharing the life style of the owners that cherished it for over a century. This is truly a statement to the love and charm of Pueblo. I can't help to think that the last living heir left this home to the people he loved dearly. As a real estate broker I still can't get over the 2000 gallon water tank installed in the Attic! No apparently as far as I could see... And ask them about the Otis elevator -this is the home builder of your dreams.

Amazing turn of the century craftsmanship and beauty! A must see! The guides were knowledgeable and a lot of fun. No photography allowed though.
Downen House — Google review
Parents not really for children because they can't touch any thing and neither can you. The history really want that interesting.. no juicy gossip or fun information. Just a family that lived there. Parents good if your over 55. Price is good for the tour,

This is an absolutely beautiful mansion and very unique. Originally built as a home in 1893 by the John A. and Margaret Thatcher family, this house has 37 bedrooms, and the estate covers an entire block. The Thatcher family resided in the mansion for 75 years. Almost all the original custom woodwork, paintings, and furnishings are original to the way the Thatcher family enjoyed it. I will post photos of the interior when they become available. ☀️🥀

Awesome place! Bobbie was our guide, and she did a wonderful job. A million thanks to her. The items at the gift shop are very reasonably priced. Anyone interested in history will love this place. We had a very relaxing and satisfying experience.

This is a must see if you love history... it's a step back in time in a grand home! Our docent was very knowledgeable and the tour was enlightening. Amazing that this home has been so well preserved! You'll definitely enjoy yourself if you stop by to see this beauty! *you can't take pictures inside so memories will have to do 😃

Amazing mansion... Unbelievable for an 1893 home. The intricate details and design of the building and furnishings. You have to see it in person to appreciate the history. The decents (guides) share the history and love this iconic mansion. There are things I've never seen that were unique and ahead of the times. One of the best values for the price of admission anywhere.

We just concluded the most spectacular guided tour of the Rosemount Estate & couldn't recommend it more. Even with the Halloween festivities going on, our guide was calm & very knowledgeable about the home. Thank you for keeping this treasure alive!!
Pueblo Weisbrod Aircraft Museum houses more than 24 old planes and other exhibits, along with a souvenir shop. Despite being located in a small town, the museum boasts excellent displays featuring historical artifacts like donated uniforms and valuable, large aircraft. The staff members are knowledgeable and have interesting personal stories to share about the exhibits. Visitors can ask for details on anything they see at the museum. It is worth visiting on Saturdays when it offers a great experience for people of all ages.
Especially for such a small town, this museum is absolutely excellent. Tiny price of entry and extremely rich history on display.
They have all kinds of incredible displays, from uniforms donated by remarkable individuals themselves to massive aircraft with great historical and technical value.
The staff themselves are excellent people as well, all with their own great personal stories too. Ask for details about anything and you will not be disappointed!

I am very thankful for this opportunity to see such history of our great country and feel like it is so alive to touch and imagine like I was there this is the greatest country that has ever been. I hope this place is around forever as a reminder of why these things we're built and the freedom we have because of this them. I wish they could have been built for peace✌️ just think.. .. ..... thanks and thankful!!@@!!

It was amazing, took the grandbaby. Last time we were there was 10 years, was so much more. The baby was amazed, we will take her back, they said Saturday are s great day.

Fantastic spot to not only view some aircraft, but also explore inside of a few, more then just aircraft though! They have half-tracks, artillery, large munitions and a pretty large space museum. 10/10 I'd definitely recommend.
Brandon Benolken — Google review
Great and knowledgeable staff! Very friendly! My kids loved how they could get inside some of the planes and helicopters. Lots of NASA stuff and two hangers to go into full of things and air crafts to explore and look at plus a bunch of airplanes outside to see and you can get on the tank and take pictures. Highly recommend
Priscilla Mares — Google review
This is definitely a must see attraction that you will not regret! Great for all ages.
You will be taken on a tour by extremely knowledgeable volunteers that makes the experience like no other.
You will have the rare opportunity to see(sometimes touch) a variety of retired military aircraft, gear, memorabilia, etc. that will capture everlasting memories.
Jeremy Hill — Google review
Great hidden gem! Lots of excellent options with several you can board!...no slouch of a museum (even though you wouldn't expect much from the outside). Look for a BOGO coupon! The docents are wonderful, passionate about the museum offerings, and have been there for years!
Jen Rhodes — Google review
Such a cool museum! Everyone we spoke with, from the guides to the office staff, were incredibly well informed about every subject my very inquisitive child could ask them about. We even got to meet a WWII veteran while we were there. So glad we stopped in!
J G — Google review
Very cool- Lots of planes and vehicles, as well as a well put together layout. They have active relations with many companies so seem to get new items/displays dropped off periodically (NASA included)! A bit of walking if you want to see everything, but we'll worth it. Interactive displays and allow you up close and even in multiple planes/aircraft! Well thought out, large selection, and great staff (some of which were lived the history on display).
dnew0004 — Google review
This a pretty good Air Museum. Plenty of warbirds, a few vehicles and a nice assortment of Space items. You are able to enter multiple aircraft both airplane and helicopter. Bathrooms in both hangars. 5-8 aircraft located outside. Staff was friendly. Nice little gift shop. For a small community this is a pretty good display. It was not crowded, kids welcomed.
Max Wood — Google review
This place is awesome!! Only ten bucks a person to get in and worth every penny. There are veterans there that are more than happy to give you a tour and explain the history of some of the items there. Thank you to the staff for being friendly and knowledgeable.🫡
Jake DeHerrera II (VibeTron aka vibeposetron) — Google review
Fantastic first trip to the Pueblo air and space museum! Two full hangers of vintage war birds and NASA equipment. Lots of signage and descriptions of various artifacts. The cost is ridiculous low for the level of museum it is. The best part is the friendly and informed staff. Well versed in each item on display and many are veterans with experience in some displays.
The pair of WW2 vets were a bonus and had amazing memories to share.
Highly recommend!
Paul S — Google review
Place was one of the best best ever been too.
The "young man" (veteran) was very informal and very sweet. I loved how he explained briefly about the areas history.
Thank you for such a memorable time, spent with husband and grandson.
The Crown Jewel of the Scouting program!! So much history and so many young people have hiked here and have taken life long memories back with them. Philmont is a unique experience. My family has been involved with scouting for many years and my wife, Daughter and Son have all been participants and have such great experiences. My daughter was so impressed she worked there for 3 summers. My Son also did a Rayado experience. he now works at Northern Tier and has for the last 4 years. This truly is a fantastic and growth filled experience! Each member of your trek will grow on this adventure!!

God’s Country! From helping my son’s trek, to helping my friend’s crew as an advisor to Philmont Leadership Challenge, PLC and NATLE faculty - some of my most formative memories and deep friendships were formed at Philmont. I Wanna Go Back To Philmont!

I went to philmont this last weekend and I had a blast. I highly recommend you go here if you are looking for a good time while in Boy Scouts. Our crews ranger, Royce was super helpful with all of her tips and tricks on how to do things. The picture below are when our crew woke io to see sunrise on the tooth of time after a hail and thunderstorm. This was trielt a once in a lifetime experience.

If you have a scout and you want to give your scout a life experience, a chance to grow in spirit and into the person that they may become. The hike builds self confidence , self reliance and most of all it builds the scout knowledge of the many jobs they may find themselves performing in thier future. And as in my case test the scouts nerve and inteligency . while at Philemont 3 or 4th day in. I was giving a cooking class and one of the items on the. Menue was a apple pie in a Dutch oven. A few minuets into the meal. We heard loud banging of pans and people yelling I looked up at the group of about 15 scouts that were facing me I could tell by thier expressions something was wrong and I jokingly asked There's a bear behind me isn't there? All of the guys slowly and altogether shook thier heads yes. I slowly moved around the table I was preparing food on. And there about 25 ft.away was a large 400 to 425lbs cinnamon bear. I looked down there was the 3lb bag of apples. Slowly I retrieved the bag. Then I told the scouts if I get his attention I want you all to slowly start down the hill side to the rangers station about a mile away. I threw the first apple it hit the bear on the head bounced off behind it.the best stopped nose up in the air and followed to the apple. It sat and began eating it. I threw about her further behind it then about her soon I had one apple left I.looked all the scouts where gone and I took that moment to slowly start towards the rangers station myself. I saw the bear look at me so I threw the last apple. Pulled my knife cut the rope that was holding our food stored up in a bear bag in a tree and I took off running. Don't know when but by the time I reached the rangers station I had somehow passed the others and beat them down the hillside. Later the rangers had to kill the bear the noise we had heard earlier was when the same bear had come into a campsite and do to candy in a tent a scout had been bitten and severely hurt.
I found my calling that summer I completed my Eagle scout and after finished school I became a law Enforcement officer and had a career That. Philmount truely helped me find.I got to spend my life being there to help and care for my community and knew that if I could face a bear with just a bag of apples facing any situation from that moment on would be easy. And with training and the unity scouting builds in to scouts I was able to use those lessons to build commodity with all the officers I was so blessed to have worked with. Protecting, serving and being a active member of my dept. City community and this wonderful nation despite its political turmoil. When tradgity strikes unity stands tall.in America.
Proud to stand with my brothers and sisters first responders not only fighting a war but continuing to perform thier duties . from the fire fighters EMS and police to thier president.
Ukrain is fighting a war to save Democracy throughout the world.
Gavin Harris — Google review
There is nothing like Philmont - nothing. It's the pinnacle of the Scouting program and the highlight of many scouts' childhoods - my own included. I will always remember my trek (13-7-12-D2) in vivid detail. It was one of the most difficult things I did growing up - living off my back for 12 days - but one of the most rewarding. It took the suburban city boy in me out into the wilderness in a way that no other Scouting experience can. It's hard to isolate what exactly made it so memorable - there was so much. Climbing Baldy and the Tooth, making it to camp just before the thunder and rain rolled in several days in a row, carrying everything you need on your back, and being in a place where cell phones, if we even had them, just didn't work.
Scouts who might be reading this - please, please, please do everything you can to make it out for a trek at Philmont. It doesn't matter who you are - Philmont will make you a better version of yourself in ways you won't imagine, and in ways you won't fully appreciate until years later. It's worth the sacrifice to come out, experience the backcountry, and earn the arrowhead patch.
I'll be back some day. Until then, IWGBTP!

Great place and all that, just keep in mind if you are planning to go there that the gear in the store is relatively cheap, at least compared to the gear in stores that sell similar items. I would recommend waiting until you get there to buy the gear to save a few hundred dollars

Most memorable experience of my life. Went there in early July of this year and it's really an unforgettable experience. This is some of the most strenuous terrain in the country. Me and my crew endured 72 miles of these mountains throughout 12 days.
If you're planning on going here, I suggest adding Mt. Baldy to your itinerary.

This was my first time ever to Philmont but it will for sure not be the last time! What an amazing place and what an amazing experience! If you want to.really get in touch with nature, take the climbing directors course or one of their many trdeep woods backpacking trips. Nature finds you!

Philmont absolutely legendary experience. When your in the heat of the moment in the NM mountains your ready to take in gods country. The other people are what make the trip special.
Ben Morse — Google review
Philmont was a great experience for me, and I'm sure it would be for any other scout looking for high adventure. I attended the NAYLE (National Youth Leadership Experience) course here, and it was a lot of fun, as well as pointing me in the right direction to improve my leadership skills. I do wish more control was given to the scouts and less teaching was done for scouts with high adventure experience, but the trip was still beneficial. Not to mention the great veiws.
Zackary Tileston — Google review
The greatest high adventure camp for Scouts, period. I've been here twice, and I was extremely impressed with the quality of the scenery, the facilities, and most importantly the staff. It doesn't get any better. I will be back, and my son will be in a few years. I'm hopeful that he will want to work on staff.

Called.Disneyland for hikers there is a lot to see here. While you can't go into the back country, you can tour the Villa Philmont built by Waite Phillips in the 1920s before he donated the land to the Boy Scouts and visit the Rayado camp that was a homestead and stop along the Santa Fe trail. Then visit the Seton Museum. Before you leave stop at the Tooth of Time trading post at base camp to pick up outdoor gear or souvenirs. Best of all there is no cost for the tours. Make reservations before you go.

I have had two great treks here! Unfortunately the quality of the closing ceremony was cringy at best. I have many good memories here and tons of fantastic photos. Everyone should come here once if you're into scouting and the outdoors. My bus to pick up my crew from the trail was late so we missed the lunch at Basecamp.
Two lakes for fishing & boating, plus camping, hiking & views on the site of a historic coal camp.
One of my favorite state parks. Peaceful and not over crowded, plenty of trails for hikes long and short, or just a nice place to sit by the lake.

We have stayed at Lake Alice campground 3 times in the past 4 years and have enjoyed each stay!
Pros:
-Beautiful area with trails and lake nearby
-Somewhat secluded so no city/road noise
-Tent sites have a fire ring, table, bear box-water spigot is found near entrance
-Vault bathrooms were clean
-Camphosts were informative and super nice
-Showers
Cons:
-Sites are close together, therefore you may hear the noise of your neighbors and RVs.
-No cell reception
Tips:
-There are few sites so book early.
-Bring bug spray, mosquitoes and biting flies were present in early September
-Be cautious of wild animals, we had a cougar growl at us while hiking a nearby trail.
-Buy firewood beforehand, didn't see any for sale at the park
-Site 16 is a big site! Room for multi tents

We stayed in Soda Pocket campground without electricity or water, but the view made up for that. Beautiful! And the hummingbirds flew fast and furious around our faces! We really enjoyed ourselves.

This place has amazing views. We were looking at some boon-docking areas. We went to Soda Pocket Campground. They have several lots with great views. Each lot has a covered picnic table & trashcans to lockup (bears). There are some restrooms available & some great hiking. There is NO CELL SERVICE (AT&T). We smelled a few skunks. We can't wait to try this place out!

A family favorite to stop by this beautiful park. The hiking trails in the south end are very pleasant for beginners. On the north end by the lake, a bit more challenging but well worth the effort. The lakes are surrounded by the terrain, so you have to work hard to not appreciate how beautiful this place is.
Luis Cuellar — Google review
Just breathtaking trails, 22 miles of them, that wind all around the area. Sites and trails were clean and managed. While I was there, they had no drinkable water and the showers were closed. Additionally, there is no cell coverage unless you bring your own satellite equipment.
The Rangers, notably Ranger Nick were very knowledgeable and helpful as was the camp host.

Came for a small hike and was not disappointed. Ours was a late afternoon hike on the Wapiti trail located just east of Malaya Lake. Nice parking area. the first 250 yards was moderately steep but as soon as you get to the first "y" trailer marker... go right. Left would be the greater incline going up. The trail was freshly groomed and well marked but was still a beautiful and natural feeling. My complement to the park staff. Great views and great weather. Didn't see any bears but did see many signs of recent bears in the woods deposits (f you get what I mean). Great views overall and of the lake below!

This was our first stop on our NM State Park tour, October 2023.
We stayed in Lake Alice campground. Only 12 sites. Weekend, sites were full. Weekdays, people leave early morningby 1-5pm, RVers are arriving. Probably 75% full midweek.
We got a full hookup site, 38 Renegade Valencia. 30 amp only. Theres a water boil notice. Fine for toilets, showers.
Several sites are large enough for 35-40 with a tow vehicle unhooked. Parked in front of the site.
Staff were fantastic and offers wood for sale daily. Quietest State Park I have ever been too! We camped at Sugarite Canyon State Park in a Motorhome.

This campground is several miles outside of Raton NM. We planned on Kayaking and were able to, but the campground we chose was up a rough, two mile road, from the main road. It wasit was a major hassle getting up and down that UNMAINTAINED road to get to our campsite. Once you got to the main road it was a mile to the lake. Showers were a mile in the other direction. Unfortunately I did not get the name of the extremely rude ranger, who when my husband jokingly asked about his uniform responded with, "call the governor if you have a complaint". Beautiful park, just needs attention and staff who care.

Very sweet spot to enjoy the night sky. If you don’t get your choice of camping spaces, bring a canopy because not all spots have full shade. It was also cool to drive into Colorado while exploring the park. Cleanest vault toilets I’ve ever used. The air freshener was an adorable touch. Very blessed to get to enjoy the free camp showers. The very best part of this park, I had absolutely zero cell service. We stayed here to try to get used to the altitude slowly & it did help. Oh and there’s about a million hummingbirds here, watch out, they definitely get in your personal space. The only downside is the RVs that will have their generator on at 5am. But the sweet camp hosts made up for that for sure. We did take the opportunity to go to Capulin volcano which was a nice scenic drive or a quick highway drive, dealers choice. The scenic drive allows for you to see Johnson church & the small town of Folsom. Given the opportunity, I will be back again.

Absolutely loved this out of the way State Park. It's so close to Raton, but most people don't know it's there. 2 great fishing lakes. A couple great campgrounds, and showers!. I've stopped here on my way back home from camping above treeline in Colorado just to get a shower. Sota Camp ground, site 2 & 3 are the best with good tree cover but near open meadows where the Elk and Deer graze.
There are old sites to explore from the mining town that used to be here. Lots of history and trails to follow.
I even saw a black bear while exploring the old town site.

Nice stay for the price. Our 30’ travel trailer with 2 slides and pick up truck just barely fit. Water at spicket had a notice to boil if you’re drinking it. $14 for water and electricity with nice fire pit and picnic table make this place a bargain. Zero cell phone service but we used Starlink which worked fine.

Loved our day here. Hiked along Lake Montoya trail into Colorado. Was still snow on the ground which made the trail very muddy in places. Still loved our hike at this park!
National park featuring a dormant volcano with hiking trails around the base & in the crater.
This is definitely worth a visit. If you are going by on the I-25, its not that far a detour to go. The whole area is fantastic with little craters and peaks. The drive up the volcano is lovely, with amazing views. Once you get to the top, the hiking trail around the rim is a must do, but it is quite strenuous. However its worth it for the views. This really is an amazing landscape and really unique.
The visitor center is nice and the staff are friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed our visit here.

It’s a nice easy drive to the top. Expect high winds. Really great views, but I don’t recommend hiking the rim in 60 mph winds. Inside the bottom of the crater was nice, but not the views for 50 miles

Capulin Volcano National Monument is a unique and fascinating destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. The volcano is an ancient cinder cone volcano that offers a great hike to the rim, and the views are spectacular. The visitor center is a great starting point to learn about the volcano's geology and history. The park staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. I highly recommend a visit to Capulin Volcano National Monument for anyone looking for a unique outdoor experience. The park also offers great opportunities for bird watching and wildflower viewing.

I have been wanting to stop here for decades. I finally did it, and it was better than expected. I showed up at 8:30 on a clear morning. I hiked the rim and into the crater. Such amazing views, especially with the snow covered mountains in the background. Really cool.
I enjoyed watching the deer run around in the crater.

How often do you get to drive to the top of a volcano, get out and hike the rim or go down into the vent? Stunning views. Rocky mountains to the north and volcanoes and lava flows to the west.
Staff at the center are awesome and very knowledgeable. Say hi and learn about the area.

Great place for a quick hike around a volcano. I highly recommend the short walk down to the crater. We would to have loved to have hiked some other trails (like the rim of the volcano) but the wind was out of control the day we went.
The drive to the crater is kind of intense as you drive the mildly windy road with a drop off and hardly any guardrails…though the scenic views of New Mexico are picturesque and worth it!
Can be a quick trip and hike down to the crater, just a drive up to the crater, or a day trip spent hiking and exploring the volcano.

Beautiful place to stop along the drive through New Mexico. Unplanned stop but so glad we saw it in passing! If you have kids with you make sure to do the Jr. Rangers program for a badge. Fun drive up to the volcano and super cool hikes down inside and around the rim. Loved it here!

On a road trip, I saw the sign and had to stop. I was unprepared for this and could not make the hike in good faith (no shoes/water/sunblock readily accessible) but very happy I stopped by.
You check in at the visitor center to show your pass and collect a map and then drive to the top parking lot where two trails are easily marked and ready. They post the estimated time to hike and if you come prepared, the views would be amazing. The pictures posted are readily accessible to anyone and worth the trip.

This is one of my favorite places that I never expected to encounter. Found this in passing while I was driving to visit my son in Colorado. A freaking volcano in New Mexico!
This was my second trip to the volcano! There is a trail that takes you down to the volcano vent and another trail that takes you around the rim. Both are very steep and will give your legs and lungs a workout!
That said, the views are amazing and worth the burn!

Great stop before you get to Colorado! 20 dollars to get in but if you're a vet or have a National Park pass it's free! We enjoyed it so much we came twice in one vacation! The rim trail is 1 mile long and a great leg stretcher! We stopped at the ranger station and checked out the video and history on the volcano! We enjoyed it!

Great area to explore. The office has a gift shop, museum, and a theatre for viewing the history of the area. The employees were friendly and informative. I had to buy a t-shirt as they have nice designs. Wear good shoes for hiking. It is right off the highway a couple miles. Lige is too short to pass up the history of our planet. God Bless, from the little blue jeep

There's a trail around the rim of this dormant volcano that's well worth the effort involved in taking the one mile walk. It's steep and the air is thin, so take your time. The views of the crater and the surrounding lava field / plains are incredible.

We’d never visited a volcano before and saw the signs off the highway on our way back from Trinidad. Very friendly staff. Drive up the volcano and took the short trail down. Easy going down but for those not in shape, it is a hard trek back up. Because of that, we didn’t get to hike the rim trail. We did love what we saw though. Very interesting. Would love to come back and do the longer trail next time.

Capulin Volcano is a hidden gem for those seeking a serene escape into nature's embrace. My recent visit during the winter season left me enchanted by the tranquility and beauty of this natural wonder.
Despite being the off-season, the park was not busy, allowing for an intimate exploration of its breathtaking landscapes. The snow-covered trails painted a picture-perfect scene, transforming Capulin Volcano into a winter wonderland straight out of a storybook.
What truly made my visit memorable was the warm welcome and hospitality extended by the Park Ranger on duty.
Navigating the park's trails looked like a delight, but it was too icy to attempt the small hikes. From the rim of the volcano, I marveled at the vast expanse of the dormant crater below, a testament to the earth's raw power and beauty.
As I ventured deeper into the park, I couldn't help but feel a profound sense of peace and wonder wash over me. The crisp winter air, the silence broken only by the occasional rustle of wildlife, created a sense of harmony with nature that is truly unparalleled.
My visit to Capulin Volcano was nothing short of extraordinary. Whether you're a nature enthusiast seeking solace in the great outdoors or simply looking to immerse yourself in the beauty of winter, Capulin Volcano offers an unforgettable experience that will leave you in awe. A heartfelt thank you to the Park Ranger for their hospitality and dedication to preserving this natural treasure for future generations to enjoy.

Beautiful place. I was only passing through, but decided to stop and see. I drove right up to the entrance and realized it was $20 to get in to see it. Seemed silly, as I was already looking at it and had been for 15 minutes while I drove there. I got out and walked around a little and did some meditating, and had a great experience. It’s probably a lot better if you pay to get in, but I had a great time there anyway!

It has been quite a while since we were here but we love this park and want to go back. There are hiking trails down into the volcano as well as along the rim. Be prepared for extreme winds on the rim. Some of the trail is completely exposed and the sudden gusts could make you lose balance. The views here are absolutely beautiful. You can drive part way up the volcano to a parking lot where there are restrooms. This provides amazing views and you may see some wildlife. We arrived as the park was opening and saw several mule deer on our drive up. We also saw a herd of Pronghorn ib the distance. The hike around the rim is definitely worth the effort. There is a visitor center that has some souvenirs and restrooms. There is no camping here. Definitely worth a visit.

A fantastic day trip with several relatively short trails around lava flows, the crater rim, and down into the crater. The views from the crater rim are breathtaking and the hike down into the crater is an interesting experience.
The roadway to the top only has a few spots with guard rails, but it did not feel unsafe. Drive carefully and enjoy the views once you’re on the top.
Overall, I would highly recommend a detour here on a road trip.

Absolutely beautiful views from the top of the Volcano. You can walk the top rim all the way around and even down to the bottom of the crater. Walking the rim is a 45-90 minute walk, and the crater path is 20-40 minutes. Totally worth the $20 a vehicle to go to the top.

Amazing views! Breathtaking! We got to the top around 3:15. They cut the trails off at 4:15. We were able to circle the mile long crater loop in 30 mins. It has an elevation change of 305ft.
The trail to the bottom of the crater is .2 miles & a change of 105ft. Bring water & a something for your hair, it's windy.
This place is amazing, but it is not for the casual camper. First it is 9 miles on a good dirt road to get to the edge of the canyon. Then you have 4 miles drive down a narrow and steep at times dirt/rock road to the valley floor. The campsites are great. They are clean and have a table, fire pit and grill. There are also very nice, clean toilets. However, there is no water available of any kind. There is also no power if you need it and shade is sparce. A pop up canopy is a great addition especially in the summer months. It can get very hot during the day in the canyon. Bring a couple of gallons of water per person per day. There isn't any good river access and in the summer the river is not flowing or inviting. The ruins are interesting and the canyon is spectacular. There are old roads you can use to hike on but there is not a formal trial system. Don't expect to see people either so you need to be ok being alone in the wilderness with no cell signal. Labor Day weekend there was only one other party in the entire park.

Beautiful spot for free camping! Large campsites with picnic tables, grills, fire pits and stalls for horses. Clean bathrooms (no running water.) We stayed at the upper campground in a 25' travel trailer. We hiked down to the lower campground in the canyon. About 7 miles round trip. Bring drinking water.

This canyon is a true hidden gem. Yes, the reviews are true. It's a bit of a trek getting down into the canyon. Has a sign that says RVs and Trailers are not recommended. From pavement to the campsites is over 5 miles at least. There are a few hiking trails, old settlement buildings, and information panels for the canyon. Very well maintained area with very clean vault toilets. This is primitive camping, meaning no water or electricity, so be sure to plan accordingly to enjoy this beautiful place.
Chase Bailey — Google review
Camped by the river on 31 May 23. Only person in the canyon. Sign on the bulletin board said they were considering adding a fee, but it was dated 2022. No fee yet. Good campsites with fire pits, grills and tables. Better have an ATV/4WD if you plan to drive down to the valley campground. Good luck getting a trailer down there, too. The upper campground should be accessible to almost all vehicles, and it has corrals in some of the campsites. There was only 1 vehicle in that campground when I drove through. Worth a slight detour to visit and learn some local history. Beautiful location. Wish I had time to hike some of the trails. Thanks for a great campground!

Upper campground is very dry and windswept. Several sites have covered corrals. The road down is an adventure, but no real problems. But it is quite a bit further down and further along, to the bottomland campground. Several miles, the first two being real doozies. The campsites at the bottom are nowhere near the river. A scramble through snake infested underbrush for about 40 yards will get you to the river bank.
John Byrne — Google review
Very nice campground. It takes a while to get there and the road is bumpy so if you don’t have high clearance, drive slowly. The canyon is also real pretty.
Rachel Reed — Google review
I stop here every time I drive across the country. Epically beautiful, generally pretty solitary. If you run into anybody, they're guaranteed to be very interesting.
Warning: the sign at the mouth of the canyon road says "RVs not recommended" I would venture to say that no wheeled vehicle save for a 4-wheeler is recommended, it is very rough and full of switchbacks. There's actually an old Rv trailer that fell into the canyon wedged between some rocks along the path.
Grasslands with many dinosaur footprints & areas for camping, fishing & hiking (open seasonally).
Had a great stay at the Clayton Lake Campground as we passed through on our way to Colorado. The park is beautiful and well kept. The sites are well spaced with plenty of privacy. We stayed on the non-electric loop and basically had the entire loop to ourselves. Plenty quiet and I don't think I've ever seen so many stars in my life. Waking up in the morning and taking the walk out to see the Dinosaur Tracks was just icing on the cake of an awesome place to stay.

Absolutely cannot beat the price for this park!
Spot was pretty level. Long enough for truck and travel trailer but not much else. Our spot (E2) was a very tight turn.
Dinosaur tracks are very cool. Bath facilities were decent. Incredibly dark skies for stargazing if you're interested in that. Saw some pronghorn antelope on the drive out.

Camped here one night mid April 2021 was 29'F at the crack of dawn. Dinosaur tracks were somewhat visible, a few were clear others weren't as clear. I few of the interpretive signs as to what the scientists saw were down right laughable, CLEARLY they were reading into stuff that just WAS NOT really there. If your profession is to study dinosaur tracks you don't get many chances to do that, so I will give them a break.

Beautiful park setting in kinda the middle of nowhere. Went in early November and plenty of fall color left. Snowed a little bit too but just enough to be pleasant.
Pros: Scenic relatively short drive from the town of Clayton, NM. Beautiful views over the water with a nice rocky edge. Friendly park Ranger and some nice campgrounds, some primitive and some with electric and water and moderately priced. There is a fun 1/2 mile in and out short hike to the far side of lake and some bonifide ancient preserved dinosaur tracks. Had zero Verizon coverage there. Very quiet and peaceful.
Cons: bathrooms and especially the showers could use a remodel. Ranger station could use an update with some nicer features.
Overall totally worth a visit and a nice peaceful spot to campout.

Hidden gem outside of Clayton NM. Prices for daily parking is about 5.00 to visit the Dino tracks. It’s a 1/2 mile walk to the site and back. On a hill, but easy to walk. Lake is clean and beautiful

Be sure to leave daylight enough to spend time looking thoughtfully at all the dinosaur tracks--it takes a few minutes to "learn how to see" the footprints, and the signs are helpful. Worth the detour from 60 if you are passing through the Clayton area.

The lake was very pretty and the campsite was very clean and spacious. I loved that each campsite had a covered picnic table. The restroom next to our site was well maintained as well. I would definitely recommend people visit here!

We decided to stop here on our way up to CO to see the dinosaur tracks and they were actually really awesome. Luckily we went after it had been raining a lot so they were the most visible but we did hear that when it's been really dry, sometimes the dirt slightly covers them so you can't seem them as clearly. Either way, the park has a nice set up with a wooden pathway to walk through and information along the way. Definitely worth it if you're in the area or wanting to go camp and spend some time. The park itself is also gorgeous so I wish we could've been there an entire day but the couple of hours we did make it was completely worth it!

Wonderful experience! The trail to the dinosaur footsteps is well maintained and only 1/4 mile. Pretty view of the lake with lots of large fish jumping! The campground is small and the sites are very close together. However, it was a very quiet evening. Would definitely go back!

I really enjoyed this campsite by the lake! Beautiful lakeviews right beside the RV park as well as a quarter mile hiking trail over to the dinosaur tracks area. Dog friendly as long as they're on a leash. Nice and quiet off the beaten path away from town.
Hookups included. Power and water. No dump site available. They did have restrooms on site.
If I'm ever in this area again I will come back to this campground..
Enjoy!

We came across the border into New Mexico and decided to camp for a few days. Used Google maps and saw that Clayton Lake was close. At first on the way there, I didnt think I was on the right road. Very few signs. We came upon the entrance and could not believe our eyes. This is a hidden oasis! We could not believe our eyes. The state rangers were all very nice and accomadating. Everyone in the park was friendly and very polite. Kids in other camps seem to have a great time as well. The park has showers, bathrooms, water and electrical spots, and your more rustic sites. Every site we looked at had fantastic view. And I mean just phenominal...
I suggest that anyone close or even far, should go to Clayton Lake State Park! You will be very happy you did. Promise you!

Nice quiet park. The town of Clayton must be the most heavily patrolled town I have ever seen, not sure why. The campground is beautiful. It's off-putting, a little oasis on the corner of the desert. The Rangers of the park were quiet and respectful, and everything was well maintained and clean. A great respite after a tiresome journey.
The Cadillac Ranch is a quirky public art installation located in Amarillo, Texas. The installation consists of ten vintage Cadillacs buried nose-first in the ground, and is a tribute to Route 66. Over the years, the cars have been decorated by visitors with graffiti, making them an interesting and colorful addition to the cityscape.
I have passed by the Cadillac Ranch installation for many years on my trips in/out of Texas. I finally decided to make a stop to check it out. This is such a cool idea, and quite a sight to see. Best of all its totally FREE!
Built in 1974, 10 Cadillacs were buried ½ deep on the property of a local Amarillo Millionaire. People traveled from all over the world to see these Caddies, and many started to deface them for souvenirs, while others put graffiti on them in order to leave their marks. Eventually, the creators encouraged the graffiti as a way to let others express themselves and have fun doing it.
Today, only the frames of the Caddies are left, and there are decades of spray paint on the cars. It’s exciting to walk down the row of cars and see the artwork of others passing by. People from all over bring their own spray paint and leave it behind in a pile of canisters on the ground when they are done. If you want to leave your mark on these Caddies but didn’t bring any spray paint with you, don’t worry, you should have no problem finding a can in the pile that were left behind. Depending on the day you visit, your artwork might only last minutes before someone comes behind you to cover it up with their own mark. Just make sure to snap some pics of your creation before you leave so you know, if anything, for just a little while it was there.
If you ever find yourself in Amarillo, Texas, I highly recommend you take 30-45 minutes on your travels to check out this unique work of art.
Recommended for everyone!

I didn't know what to expect, but this attraction is really neat! The views are stunning and the art is captivating. It feels a little like stone henge😂
I didn't realize that the art is participatory... But some spray paint from the guy ($7.50/can) and contribute to the installation!
A steady stream of visitors adds to the charm and mystique of the site.

Great experience! It's worth the stop. Paint recommendations, White for background if you want to paint on top with a brighter/ neon color. Kids loved it! Had been wanting to visit this since we were in the area. It was interesting to see the vast amount of signatures and people from all over. There wasn't as many cars as I thought there would be. Very strong smell of spray paint since almost everyone had cans of spray paint. It was still fun to see this little piece of history/tourist attraction. Crazy to see how many layers of paint every car had.

It's definitely an eccentric spot.
I'd recommend checking it out only if you happen to be passing by on Route 66 or Route 44 near Amarillo.
They have Cadillac cars buried halfway into the ground, which you're welcome to paint on if you're interested. Keep in mind, the paint shop nearby can be quite pricey. It might be a good idea to bring your own paint from elsewhere or hope that previous visitors have left behind some leftover bottles of paint.

I’ve been here before but it’s always cool to stop by early to beat the crowds. I went early in the morning and I took my own spray can it’s cheaper and better if you do. It’s a memorable place to do some tagging and look at cars that have been painted by everyone. The gift shop was closed when I was leaving maybe next time I’ll get something. It’s a must to stop here.

What a weird and quirky art exhibit. I loved the layers and layers of spray paint. People had left spray paint cans so I got to add my own name. Fun. I also loved that there was no attempt to monetize it. Just pure art for people to enjoy. Worth a stop for sure.

If you're on a journey along the historic Route 66 and find yourself in the wide expanse of Texas, there's one stop you absolutely cannot miss – the Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo. This iconic roadside attraction is more than just a collection of half-buried cars; it's a vibrant symbol of American ingenuity, creativity, and the enduring spirit of adventure.
As you approach the Cadillac Ranch, you can't help but feel a sense of excitement and curiosity. Ten vintage Cadillacs, dating from the late 1940s to the early 1960s, stand upright in a field, their colorful paint jobs and sleek lines contrasting with the endless Texas sky. It's a sight that's both surreal and mesmerizing, beckoning you to step closer and explore.
One of the most fascinating aspects of the Cadillac Ranch is its interactive nature. Visitors are not only allowed but encouraged to grab a can of spray paint and leave their mark on the cars. As a result, the Cadillacs are adorned with a kaleidoscope of colors, patterns, and messages, creating a constantly evolving work of art that reflects the creativity and individuality of each person who passes through.
But beyond the opportunity for artistic expression, the Cadillac Ranch holds a deeper significance as a cultural landmark. It's a nod to America's love affair with the automobile, a reminder of the open road and the freedom it represents. It's also a testament to the power of art to inspire, provoke, and bring people together, transcending boundaries of age, background, and nationality.
Visiting the Cadillac Ranch is more than just a pit stop on a road trip – it's an experience that leaves a lasting impression. Whether you're a seasoned traveler or a wide-eyed adventurer, there's something undeniably magical about standing amidst those towering Cadillacs, surrounded by the vastness of the Texas plains.
The Cadillac Ranch is a must-see destination for anyone with a sense of curiosity and wonder. It's a celebration of Americana at its finest, a testament to the enduring allure of the open road and the creative spirit that drives us forward. So next time you find yourself cruising down Route 66, be sure to make a detour to the Cadillac Ranch – you won't regret it.

This is a fun spot to visit and doesn't take much time out of your schedule. It's worth the stop to see the art on these vehicles. You can even get spray paint to make your own mark! I have been here twice now over the last 5 years. It's a classic stop on route 66. It has been reworked since the last visit. The turnstile is gone and the road leading out has been improved. If you come here, don't leave your garbage behind. If you intend to not pick up after yourself, don't visit the site. This is private land and can be closed to the public at any time. Last year I read an article that it may be removed soon. So that's the point to my second visit. Got some new photos. Overall, it's a must see that I hope lives on for years to come, but it sounds as if it's mabey on borrowed time.

When I finally arrived here, my first thought was, “did I really drive all this way for cars sticking out of the ground?” I thought, surely there must be more than this. There was not. You park your car on the side of the road, get out and walk through a gate, then way down a dirt entryway are these cars in the ground. Granted, you can bring spray paint and paint to your hearts content, but I brought none. But man did I get some great shots! The clouds came out to play that day! I would say this is a one and done kind of attraction. Fun but no need to go back a second time. Glad I did it though!

If you're passing through this area, I'd highly recommend a quick stop here. The walk to the cars isn't that far from where you have to park. There was a person on site selling spray paint if you wanted to paint the cars yourself. All in all, you probably don't need more than 20-30 minutes here.

This is a free, iconic visual of history in America. Cadillac Ranch is set back, off highway 40 and does not seem like a worthwhile effort. But, we took the time out to visit and were happy that we did. Classic Cadillacs set out, buried in the ground are a tribute to the vehicles and roads that made America. They are heavily painted allowing visitors to place themselves as part of that history. Spray paint cans are freely available. There is a small, affordable vendor on-site selling memorabilia. There is some walking involved on rutted dirt surface and only Porta potties for restrooms.
I highly recommend taking the hour or so to visit, it was worth the time.

First attempt to go see this place was on a whim at 9 at night. There were about 10 cars along road but there are no lights at night! We could see many flashlights in the distance, but decided to play it safe and waited til next morning. Huge surprise to 40 to 50 cars and tour busses! This was a follow in the foot steps my dad had visited so the experience was fabulous! Be prepared that if you paint, it will be painted over quick! Take pictures. It was amazing to see all the different types of people, young to older. Awsome place!

This was a cool little put stop off highway 40 / old66. They have 10 old caddillacs buried in the dirt, lined up for people to graffiti all over. There is a truck when you arrive selling spray paint so you can have your fun. The things people spray aren't really art, some have talent. The art is the layers and layers of paint built up, dripping or melting off that male up the real art. It would be nice to see what they look liked originally. The streets and walls around the highway are ulled with graffiti too. There are locks hanging on the gates front what people left behind, everything covered with color. There is nothing else around but dirt and those old cars.

You park along the side of the road, and it's hard to miss with all the spray paint cans, painted roads, and painted barricades. There was a truck there that was like a food truck but sold souvenirs, spray paint, and other odds and ends! The spray paint was somewhere around $6 a can, so it's pretty fair prices. I recommend fluorescent colors! Also wear old clothes because you will get paint on you!! They seem to pop the best.
Please throw your spray paint cans away!!! There's so many laying around the ground when trash cans are available in multiple places.

Had to see this place on my route 66 road trip, and it was just as good as I thought it would be. They had a truck and trailer set up with a shop, and you could get paint, stickers, and post cards, among other things, all in one place! I didn't buy any paint, but someone leaving gave me their unused paint can, and I passed it on after I was done. All in all, I would go again.

Not as big as I thought it'd be but very cool spot! It was sad to see how much trash people have left behind. People were so nice to share the spray cans they brought with others around them.

This is such an iconic place to visit so I’m glad I went while I was in town. We got some cool pictures out of it but honestly it was pretty underwhelming. The cars were pretty far from the place you had to park and it’s crazy windy so the walk isn’t fun. There’s always extra half-empty cans of spray paint lying around so don’t feel the need to bring any of your own. The actual cars were cool but I wish there was some sort of plaque or bit of info given to make me feel like my trip was somewhat educational rather than me just walking out into a field in the middle of nowhere to see some cars sticking out of the ground.

Making our way across the country, Cadillac Ranch is an iconic stop! We were there on a cool, windy day, and there were lots of people walking around, taking photos and a few artists with their paint cans. One parks on a side road and it’s a long walk to the display. There’s a gate, and it’s possible to get a wheelchair thru, though the ground is uneven and a bit rough.

Surprisingly busy location! Plenty of parking along the road, but lots of people come here to see these caddies buried nose down. You can buy spray paint from a guy on site, contributing your own guerrilla art to the cars, the concrete barrier separating the site from the freeway, or even the road surface.
mossum — Google review
The cool thing about this is all the people painting the cars, the paint gets so thick that it slides off. The local artist collects the paint that slides off and makes art out of it. Some even make earrings that are very colorful and unique. The visitors center for Route 66 Amarillo has the earrings and can tell you the rest of the places where the art can be bought. This is a free spot to stop (unless you buy paint on site) and enjoy with the kids. The kids were laughing, running and having a great time. It was fun watching them.
Amarillo Route66 is a non-profit organization that celebrates the history and culture of the American road trip. The district spans for one mile and features historical buildings, restaurants, and more. Visitors can explore everything from antique stores to art galleries while enjoying live music events.

What can you say about Main Street USA in Amarillo? There’s a great selection of places to explore, eat, drink and buy your souvenirs and collectible. It will take all day and maybe more to visit all the stores in this area. Come hungry, come thirsty and bring plenty of spending money.

Very friendly gift shop near here. They stamped my passport, gave me a great couple of pins and had some awesome souvenirs. There were some cool cars driving past, also, which is why I got this photo of the Cadillac diving past.

Cool little place with some photo ops. Seems like it opens up at night there's a ton of bars down this strip. We went down on a weekday morning there was nobody walking around seemed to kind of like a ghost town. It was a lot of pass through driving traffic. Very nostalgic

I went down on a Tuesday early in the afternoon - first time through I missed it. It did not help that my GPS dropped me off about six blocks from the actual area. I am guessing that it wakes up in the evening - dead during the day. It was cool to see - although if I were to do it again, I would wait until later in the evening when the place is awake (and it is a bit cooler)...

Had some good experiences and some shady ones. Downtown was quite rundown and had a lot of sketchy people wandering the streets. This was in the middle of the week in the middle of the day. The Big Texan steakhouse was FABULOUS! Was worth the stop for that meal!

A decent stretch of historic Route 66 with lots of nostalgia.
Great free RV museum. It was a little hard to find. It is back in a gated area. Very cool that you could actually go into most of the RVs and look around. Great information on each RV as well. Highly recommend if you are in the area.

Well worth the visit for all RVers! Free entry! The volunteer lady was so friendly. She welcomed our 2 small dogs. The RVs they have are awesome, and set up just as they would have been back in the day. 1935 Airstream. The RV from Robin Williams RV Movie is there. Open Thursday Friday Saturday only. Right on the 27 Frontage Road, northbound lane. Easy access to stop and visit if you pass by in your RV. Thank you Volunteers!

A fun little museum. Free but they take donations. I recommend donating what you can to keep this little enterprise going. They had all the way back to a 1935 Airstream, an RV used in the movie "RV", and many other interesting vintage RVs. Also some super cars and a nice collection of Harley Davidson bikes. Be sure to visit both buildings. A second nearby building had a 1963 split-window Corvette Stingray, a newer Indy Car 'vette, and several vintage race cars.

This was an unexpected surprise, there are several RV’s Motorcycles and cars. I was most interested in the vintage RV. Well worth the drive from Palo Duro Canyon. There are several that have low entry doors with signs to watch your head, but I really banged my head leaving one. Would recommend some caution tape on the inside as you leave the RV.

This is the coolest museum we've ever been to, ever. We are RV enthusiasts, and owners of our own little Class C motorhome. This was such a delight!! And they have much more than just amazing rare RV's (most of which you can ((please be gentle and careful!!! 🙏)) walk through!) But also equally amazing vintage and rare sports cars, motorcycles, toys, memorabilia and more. We had the biggest blast here!! This place is free admission, with acception of appropriate donations. We wish we could've gave more, but we had a $20 on us and threw that in there. They also have free cold water for everyone. Yes, you can feel the love here.
Now, for our pro tips on visiting this must-see Amarillo gem; finding the entrance. When you approach the RV museum, you will see a big, dark building which has "Sisemore" in big letters, on the side of it. You've found it! Turn into the first entrance, and pass through the gate, where the parking and entrance is on your right. Don't forget to check out the little building next to the main one, there's lots of awesome memorabilia and sports cars in there. Happy travels! P. S, we will be recommending this to everyone we know. And, I have to mention this: the little informative signs which most everything has, are so super wholesome and adorable, they kind of make my heart overflow with joy. You totally need to see this Museum! 1,00,00,00,000,00 recommend out of 10.

Definitely worth a visit! Lots of unique and antique RVs as well as Motorsports vehicles and Harley Davidson Motorcycles. Google shows it is temporarily closed but it is not. It has moved locations. The new address is 14201 I-27, Amarillo, TX. It is behind Yates Flooring. Worth the time to stop and see it!

A hidden gem, literally!! A little tough to find off an access road with little signage, but WELL worth the hunt. Incredible collection of RVs, most in outstanding condition for their age. The best part is that you are encouraged to go in and look around inside them. They are not just shells either. the staff's attention to detail is fantastic. Make sure you look at everything, inside and out. Tons of artifacts arranged around the RVs give a window to the past. Free admission!!!

First of all there aren't many RV museums out there and second of all it's free! You can't beat that with a stick shift. Most of the rigs are open to step inside, which is also a rare treat. Make the trip. It's worth it. Plan on about 30-45 minutes.

Stopped in since we are campers. Don't care about motorcycles or race cars, just came to see the old rv's. They don't sell tickets, we left a donation. Place was difficult to find, it's in an old warehouse in back of an industrial complex. Collection is in two buildings, neither is ADA compliant. Was worth the trip.
The Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum showcases the natural history of the area with a collection of bones, artifacts, and artwork. Despite initial concerns about the admission fee, visitors are encouraged to spend at least two hours exploring the numerous displays on offer. The museum covers an extensive range of topics including a pioneer town exhibit, providing an educational experience for all ages. Tourists can even obtain discount coupons from visitor centers in Amarillo to make their visit more affordable.
I have not been since I was a child. This is truly a beautiful museum that is well worth the time. If you want to visit and see everything you're going to spend a full afternoon. The staff are very courteous and helpful. Thank you, Juanita Duncan for the time and professionalism.

Very historically accurate, huge museum. Was not expecting much, was honestly very surprised at the scale and attention to detail in this place. Would recommend to anyone interested in Panhandle-Plains history. My only regret with this place was that we could not spend more time there, I would recommend 2+ hours inside.

WOW! This place is huge. We thought we were going to swing by and check it out before leaving town but we couldn't finish it. They have a full-on pioneer village set up to showcase what it was like to live back then, along with fossils, anthropological artifacts, cars, and guns. I will definitely have to come back at some point when I have more time but it was an excellent experience!

At first I thought the price might be too high...but I was wrong. I spent 3.5 hours here and enjoyed every minute of it. They had displays on just about everything imaginable. I especially liked the pioneer town. I would recommend planning at least 2 hours. If you read every placard like I do, you might spend upwards of 4 hours here.
Oh, and I was able to get a $2 discount coupon from the back side of a tourist map I got at a visitor center in Amarillo.

Justin Forrester — Google review
Museum covers a lot of subjects/ areas in varying depth. Oil industry was covered in great depth and learned a few new things. Nice display of old and rare automobiles. More of a broad swath of information than deep drilling down in most sections. Pioneer town had different retail businesses of the day with an information sign at most displays- lighting was poor by several of those signs and difficult to read. Downgraded the museum as the movie was broken, as were the videos at several displays. We spent 2 1/2 hours there.

This was the place to go for families that enjoy learning. The interactive learning was the best part for my children. The art galleries were amazing and wonderful. Only spent 4 hours here. Could spend the whole day. Best in Texas. Best I've seen anywhere. And it isn't just about oil!
Set in a scenic canyon, this amphitheater features seasonal performances about the history of Texas.
This production is and always has been amazing. My Parents took our family to see it every year for most of my childhood. As an adult, it is just as mesmerizing as when I was little. A fun night of entertainment for the family. It also throws in a history lesson even if it is just inspired by that history. A great experience in every way.

One of the best musicals I've ever seen. TEXAS shows how perfected it has become over the past 59 years it has been performed. This is a must see for anyone living in West Texas. I very much enjoyed it, I will be back to see it again, and I will recommend it to everyone. I went to the very last show of the season and I sat toward the very back, right of center, and the view was still great. I doubt there is a bad seat in the whole amphitheatre.

Great Experience with amazing performance, lighting, sound system and stage show.
They staged the history, clashes between native tribals, railroads....
From there official info:
A LONE HORSEMAN, carrying the flag of the great state of Texas appears atop a 600 foot cliff, signaling the beginning of the most spectacular outdoor musical in the nation. With a moving swell of the music, the horseman gallops across the rim. Suddenly, a cast of more than 60 actors, singers and dancers takes the stage to kick off the show that millions of fans from all around the world have come to see.

Where else can you see a musical performance in the middle of the "Texas Grand Canyon"? This was such a unique event! We purchased tickets about 2 months ahead of time and after looking at other reviews online, we took someone's advice of where to sit. In case you need the info, the right side, halfway up (rows K-M) are perfect. The show had a ton of college-age actors/singers/dancers in it (I'm guessing from West Texas A&M down the street in Canyon, TX). They did such a great job and had huge smiles on their faces the entire time.
The only thing we didn't necessarily enjoy was the storyline. It was a bit strange and didn't flow correctly in some spots. But it was a great experience overall!

We have attended the Texas musical in beautiful Palo Duro Canyon for years. My husband has been attending since the 80s. And I have to sadly say, last night was awful. We went to see our beloved show and continue our family tradition...but the show was quite disappointing. It was not upbeat and lively. It was slow and even dark feeling. They cut the beautiful, colorful dresses and dance that we all loved. They cut many lines and comic relief. The energetic, cowboy dances were replaced with more alternative, ballet moves...it was not fun at all. The music was mostly slow and depressing as well. And there were no fireworks, after we have received much rain in our area. I wish we would have known about all the changes to our wonderful Texas. There is usually a patriotic video at the end and that was deleted as well. What a terrible disappointment Texas has become. We would have stayed home if we had known. I truly believe the director must be depressed or something. I do NOT recommend that anyone waste their time and money on this show.

The musical definitely gets 5 Stars the BBQ barely got a 1... dry meat, no flavour beans and coleslaw and potato salad. So not worth $17.25. Top tip go to Whataburger and arrive a little later especially if it's hot. Most of the players were young but they were enthusiastic and very good. Spontaneous moments of laughter and shock. Not sure about how much history I learnt? Fireworks were fabulous, that the time and only time you can take photos. I would pay to see the show again, VIP package and food absolutely not. I'm sure it's Covid related but the gift shop 👎
Palo Duro Canyon State Park spans an impressive 60 miles of ravine that boasts towering 800-ft cliffs. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, including hiking the numerous trails and taking in the musical "Texas" at the park's amphitheater. It is advisable to arrive early to beat the heat and bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and bug repellent as necessary.
Amassing Canyon to explore there is so much to see and many trails to hike but you have to go there early because it can get hot very quick also bring plenty of water and sunscreen and maybe some kind of bug repellent depending on the time of the year you are visiting.
At gift shop you can buy some snacks and food things but if you bring your own picnic there is plenty of nice and shaded areas to stop and refuel your body while enjoying the breathtaking views pretty much anywhere in the Canyon property.
I absolutely love my visit here and never gets old because you will always find a new view to take in!!!

Palo Duro Canyon, often referred to as the "Grand Canyon of Texas," is a spectacular natural wonder located in the Texas Panhandle, USA. It was formed by millions of years of erosion by the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River. It exposes colorful layers of rock, including red, orange, yellow, and lavender hues, making it visually stunning.
It is the second-largest canyon in the United States, stretching over 120 miles long, up to 20 miles wide, and reaching depths of around 800 feet. The canyon covers approximately 29,000 acres of land.
Palo Duro Canyon is not only a geological wonder but also a natural playground for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a wide range of recreational activities and stunning scenery for visitors to enjoy. It's a must-visit destination for those exploring the beauty of Texas.

The scenery is awesome!!! During spring break, I went during the week day so there was a sizable amount of guests (totally more fun with people around) yet not very crowded. And the temperature was not too high either. Many trails for all levels of hiker. I chose to hike but there are many more activities that can be done. Even drive on the road inside the state park only, you can still see beautiful landscape with red-orange hue canyon and clear blue sky. Definitely recommended!!!

Nice spaced out sites with water and electric with 2 dump stations, no shade really though. Campgrounds are way back in the park, very quiet and secluded. We stayed in the Juniper campground, site 105. Nice views and trails from campsites. Lots of nice trails to take but unfortunately when we were there it was well over 100 degrees so we didn't get to partake much in the hiking. The hiking we did do we started out early to beat the heat. Didn't use the bathhouses but they seemed to be okay, not very many showers and no AC or vents in the buildings though. Wish we could have explored more as it is a beautiful park. Maybe we will come back when it isn't so hot.

Fantastic canyon to visit! Located a short drive outside of Amarillo, Tx. Very scenic state park containing miles of hiking, biking, and equine trails. Take plenty of water if you visit during warmer times of the year. The canyon floor can easily get 110 to 120 degrees. The Lighthouse is the most recognized feature here and we'll worth the hike needed to get closer views.

Don't miss going here!! It's spectacular! I don't recommend going during summer months when it's brutally hot. Loads of hiking trails, wildlife, and biking areas. Wear boots and be snake aware. Also, the night views are amazing! Stars as far as you can see!

We love Palo Duro Canyon. The idea that we can drive down and camp inside the second largest canyon in the United States is amazing! The views are captivating and lots of wildlife is there. We saw many deer and heard coyotes. It was hunting season when we were there so many of the trails were closed but they look like great biking and hiking trails. The campground is great, water and electric only with a dump station on the way out. Leave your cell phone in the truck, there’s no service in the canyon. It’s very windy down there (and in the area as a whole) but it strangely adds to the relaxation factor. This was our second year and three nights wasn’t enough, we’ll come back for a week next time.

Palo Duro Canyon is the crown jewel among State Parks in Texas. In spite of it being remote and not near the major population centers of the state, it still had about 375,000 visitors in FY 2023. With more than 25 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and equestrian activities, along with abundant camping and day-use facilities, there is plenty of room to roam.
You will often find Palo Duro referred to as The Grand Canyon of Texas. I dislike such comparisons, because they can diminish during the comparison. Hey, at least you can drive into this canyon. The one in Arizona can’t make that claim.
Do be advised that they aren’t kidding about the heat. The canyon floor can and does hit 130F or more in summer. For that reason, winter is my favorite time of year to visit, with many days ranging from the 50s to 70s. If you come in summer, plan on sunblock, water bottles, and insect repellant to deter the notoriously large—and biting—flies.
The summer musical—Texas!—is a delight to see, even if it sometimes crosses the border with tropes and cliches. But that’s the whole point, so sit back and enjoy.
My only beef with the park is that, in spite of its massive size, there is a whole other section that has been made off-limits, with land being leased to private ranchers. This means that you won’t get to see Cathedral Peak, the crumbling ruins of the Kneeling Camel, and numerous slot canyons. Maybe someday the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will ease up on these restrictions.
Still, there is more than enough for out-of-town guests to enjoy. It seems that only those of us who live here fret about what we cannot do. But that’s probably because we call this our playground, and come here frequently enough to yearn for more.

One of the best parks I have ever been to right in my backyard! (figuratively) We had a good time, saw a lot of beautiful breathtaking views, the kids had fun with the junior ranger program and got their badge! We did a 10 mile hike, various trails, we suffered a little, I hadn’t realized my hiking boots had given their last the last hike I did( always check your gear!) so I had a few blisters there at the end, but definitely worth it. Two days is not enough to explore this beautiful park.

Wonderful place. You can drive to the bottom to camp or walk the trails. Second longest canyon in the U.S. after the Grand Canyon. Soils exposed along the canyon walls date back to 250 million years ago and expose the thin layer where prehistoric fossils have been found. Go see the video about the history of the area at the visitor center for a good understanding of what you are looking at when you walk or drive the canyon. I think it's worthy of a National Park designation.

We were taking a trip out west going through Amarillo, TX and weren’t sure if it was too far of a detour. If you ever wonder if you want to take the detour, do it! It was absolutely worth it and a great way to stretch your legs on a long trip. I hope to be back to get a chance to do more hiking on their trails.

If you can go and are in the area. Go. It's an amazing hike on a well maintained trail. At the trail head the rangers are fantastic making sure that you don't go in unprepared. (144° on ground by noon.) So leave the puppers home for this one. Unless you get out there early.
This is not for the faint (ha get it?) Of heart. There are plenty of resting spots but the bulk (6mile round trip) of the trail is not covered with shade... reports of snakes. Heat sickness and exhaustion is real and will get you quicker than anything so bring water (at least 3L per person), hat, long sleeved light clothing if you need.
Enjoy and Be Safe!

This is a beautiful state park! The canyon is spectacular. I visited with my best friend this past summer and it was too hot to do any hiking, but we did get out and walk a little and take pictures. We also drove around the park to see the scenery. I definitely want to visit again sometime in the fall or early spring when the weather will be nicer to get out and hike. I also like that it is a dog friendly park - I hope to take my future dog here and hike.

The windchill was no joke when I got up to the Lighthouse, but the view was breathtaking! I was able to get out and back within 4 hours. Plenty of people were camping as well despite the temperatures dropping, but it was definitely warmer within the canyon.

2/3 of the park was closed for hunting when we were here, so that left many trails closed. We were still able to hike for a good chunk of a day and the views are amazing here! Hiking was great. We were here in the off season so there were few people. The campground is nice and the shower/toilet room was clean and well kept. The camp host was pleasant and has the most wonderfully happy dog. We had a burger from the Trading Post and is was delicious.

Pictures don't do it justice. It is so beautiful in person!!
Different areas have no cell phone service. $8 for adults. Gift shop with a small restaurant. Plenty of trails. Bring water.
Ainsleigh Sills — Google review
Started at Palo Duro Canyon State Park, well worth the admission fee of only $8 per person. There are also campsites inside the park. This is the second largest deepest canyon in the United States. We then took a ride around the canyon on back roads. Beautiful sights to see

We love coming to hike here! Beautiful scenery and well kept campsites. The bathrooms were nice and clean.

I love Palo Duro Canyon! It still awes me to be driving through flat plains & suddenly run up on a Big Crack in the earth which opens up to Spanish skirts with a stream running between them, the landscape dotted with juniper, hackberry trees, & wildflowers spring-fall. I like hiking the trails - there are a good variety of them, so you can choose how you want to hike that day. If you're there during the week when it's a little less busy, it's amazing how quiet it is (not nature, of course) -it soothes my soul. Be smart! Come prepared! Summertime, it's hot - know your trail & the temperature & bring enough water for your hike!

Good facilities, clean bathrooms. Visitor’s center was great and interesting. The sights are beautiful and the hikes are rated accurately. We enjoyed our trip and will visit again!

I stopped in Palo Duro Canyon State Park on a road trip from Arkansas to Arizona in the summer of 2023. I wasn't able to spend as much time there as I would have liked, and I'll definitely make a point to return.
Quite frankly I was floored by the beauty of the Canyon. I just saw the canyon, pretty much from the lookouts near the visitor center.
The visitor center had super friendly staff. I will say that trashcans seemed a little sparse for some reason.
JC Prazak (Ozark Explorer) — Google review
Visited for 3 days.
Hiked the Lighthouse trail, the CCC ridge trail, the Rock Garden trail, and the Paseo Del Rio trail.
The Lighthouse trail is beautiful but more strenuous than expected. Take lots of water.
Very scenic and worth the trip.
It's our favorite place to visit. It is very inspiring & a special place to be. We could stay for hours if it was possible. We feel God's love when we are there.

AMAZING!!!! Seen the huge cross from the side of the highway and decided to turn around. So glad we did.
It is breathtaking. The cross was huge, an extract replica if the tomb Jesus was buried in, amazing metal statues of the stations of the cross, a gorgeous fountain and a cute gift shop with plenty of items to look at.
I 100% recommend you all to stop and take a look. The woman in the gift shop was so nice to us and made lovely conversation.

This awesome monument is worth the sidetrip.
Though prayerful consideration of each feature is difficult in hot Texas sun, an Easter visit might be more advantageous to contemplation.
David Smith — Google review
Wow, what an amazing spot! When you walk onto the grounds, you can feel that prayer upon prayer has gone up. It's sort of weird to me to build this masterpiece in the middle of nowhere, but I do think there is something quite amazing happening. I can only imagine all the drivers that are randomly blessed by a stop. This is an amazing meditation point where you can walk through life size statues of the passion, go to the cross, even sit at the last supper. There is also a lovely fountain to sit at and pray. If you are ever cruising down the 40, make time for at least a 30 minute stop, longer if you can!

I found this place on Tik Tok and had to visit. Definitely worth the drive, and time spent there. It was moving to say the least. Beautiful, breathtaking and you can feel the love and pain for ultimate sacrifice for us sinners. If you're in the area, you have to stop and see it for yourself.

Wow!!! No need to leave the United States... Jerusalem is right here in Texas. better to stay safe in the US! Stations of the Cross statues are life size. Jesus tomb is life size and the blessed waterfall will keep you speechless. Excellent tour stop for all Christians, yet you don't have to be a Catholic to enjoy this beautiful, peaceful, breathtaking location. Best to come in the day time. Unforgettable site. Must come see it at least once in your lifetime.

What a beautiful tribute to the Lord Jesus Christ. Praise God for our redemption through His work on the cross. Touching tribute to all those who lost their lives through abortion. The Lord knows and loves each one. Wonderful place to see!

If you want to be captivated by beautiful biblical artwork and sculptures I recommend going here. This area personally for me is very relaxing and really makes me wanna delve deeper into God's wonderful mysteries. This is the very place my husband knew he had to marry me. He told me he felt that God was speaking to him when we visited for the first time with my family. Truly an astonishing visit.
Cynder Nail — Google review
This is a place where you feel very humbled, the center is a huge cross and circling the huge cross are bronze life-size statues of Jesus Christ and different scenes that were from the Bible scriptures approximately 12 to 14 different stations around the cross and it is so lifelike. It also has the tomb and the holy sepulchre and a huge gift shop. It cost nothing but it will take a piece of your heart as you see it unfold before your eyes the crucifixion of our Savior Jesus Christ. A Must Visit !!!
Curt Blankenship — Google review
A huge cross that can be seen 5 miles away. Very impressive. Nice gift shop. A short movie about the construction. There is a prayer room available. Well worth the extra time it added to our travels. This christian woman was so moved by the stations of the cross, so realistic, it brought me to tears.
Jan S — Google review
Be still my heart and thank you for this amazing sight celebrating the life, death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The stations of the cross are done beautifully as is the last supper. Take time to study the the facial expression for each disciple. I so appreciated how the artist captured the facial expression and body position of each man. What really caught my heart is the memorial of Jesus on His knees holding a pre born baby. The sadness and gentleness depicted in His face broke my heart. I am move by this remembrance for all the unborn babies never given the opportunity to live out their life due to abortion. The gift store is full of wonderful items.

Praise the Lord Jesus Christ for he is risen, this place is amazing and well kept, you can just feel the presence of the Holy Spirit and the fire within, come everyone and enjoy the journey
Katie Luthor — Google review
Technically, the cross here in Groom isn't the largest but I'm not going to point that out to anyone. There's a cross in Effingham Illinois that is a midge taller. But the land here is flatter and you'll be seeing this cross from nearly 20 miles away as you're heading between Amarillo and Oklahoma City.
It is located just off I-40 with an easy exit. There is a large gravel parking lot with plenty of room for larger vehicles.
At the base of the cross are life-sized statues that depict the 14 Stations of the Cross. There is also a small amphitheater. It's an ideal stop if you're a Christian or Christian-curious.

I really enjoyed visiting this place. So much . Loved reading all the things. Loved looking at all the Statues. Was so neat and moving to go into the cave with the stone that tolled away. Prices was high on most of the things to buy though. Loved, Loved the fountain.

Oh my! What can I say, but that I'm so glad we stopped by!! Beautiful almost or close to life-sized statues of our dear Lord's last days, brought to life in "The Stations of the Cross." Please take a quick exit into the town of Groom, Texas, and take a look for yourself. There's even a generous sized gift shop with beautiful gifts for purchase.

I love this place and the story behind the ranch! The entire staff were so friendly and accommodating. The young lady that checked us in was so sweet. It is kept neat and orderly. Wonderfull gallery filled with information on the Goodnights. We took the tour of their home and the guide was also delightful. The home is beautiful with nicely groomed grounds. If you love history this place is for you. Thanks to all!

This was an excellent stop. I really enjoyed the tour and the stories about the family. The guide was so helpful. The house was beautiful.
Rachel Brownlee — Google review
3 stars is because I wasn't able to take the tour as they were cancelled because of heating issues. There was no social media post of the issue, which I rely on to provide information. Also, multiple restroom stalls were out of order. Otherwise, this place is immaculate and you will definitely learn something you didn't know. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. There are 3 bison adjacent to the property that are descendants of the original Goodnight herd.

Great pit stop. The main building only has 5-10 minutes of free exhibits. The tour of the house costs a few bucks but is worth it. My kids favorite part was seeing the buffalo up close

What a treat to have been going home from vacation and choose this route! When we saw the sign Goodnight we knew we had to stop. We so enjoyed visiting to the lovely employees and your guides. The short films were very informative and the tour of the grounds and house was amazing. Our guide knew her history! The house is amazing along with it's furnishings. We considered this our lucky day to have stumbled upon this piece of history. We encourage everyone to take the time to visit here. You will totally enjoy this walk back in time.

If you remember the book or miniseries, The Lonesome Dove, you will love the Charles Goodnight house tour. We had a very knowledgeable guide, Evan, a historian who really took us through the history of the house. This is very finely restored. Also, there is a museum which further tells Good night's story particularly how his efforts saved the southern buffalo from extinction.
What a cool place. We happened on it 30 minutes before closing. Coolest displays and historical photos of the nearby towns. Route 66 artifacts. Even had vintage collections for sale and handmade Western decor made from rope and barbed wire (devil's rope). So cool and an awesome gift store to boot! Must see. Loved it. Also bought some Route 66 sodas.

Kids spend some time here to find all the items on a list and got a souvenir as rewards. Pretty fun! Got our Taxes Route 66 passport here ( Vinyl record style) and collected the 1st Route 66 coin. Great place to learn all kinds of wire fences, tools and technologies! That’s why it is called devil’s rope by the Indians.

Devil's rope is barbed wire. A really fascinating museum. Well worth your trip you'll enjoy it. There is so much more than barbed wire.
Denise Ferguson — Google review
I would never have known there was enough history about Barbed Wire to make a museum for it. It also has a Route 66 historical section and a section about the 1900s dust bowl. This place was fascinating and the attendant was super friendly and helpful.
Equestrian, hiking & biking trails & camping amid scenic red canyons & grasslands with a bison herd.
Great place to spend a few days days. The RV sites are level (site 17 was very level), the sites are spacious, friendly staff and good hiking (the canyon and surrounding areas are beautiful). As an added bonus, there are lots of bison, prairie dogs and even saw a road runner. Another great Texas State Park.
Stan Orlowski — Google review
Great sites and an overflow camping area for those that messed up their reservation (😁) and don't need hookups. There are around 250 bison in the canyon, traveling in groups/solo. We definitely sat in our car some waiting on one group to decide to fully cross the park road. One herd hangs out a lot right by restrooms/playground so you will Def see some! The prairie dogs are super cute and also right by the restrooms! The sidewalk cuts right through their town. Playground is just a metal slide and some swings but was enough for our kiddos. Lovely scenery!! Photos of our trailer below are in the overflow camp lot. It's just a big open space.

This is a great place for hiking, mountain biking or just camping for some alone time. South Prong trail was my favorite had to yield to 3 buffalo twice on the way. But the view from atop the south prong trail was spectacular. Fern cave was neat and cool. I enjoyed the Haynes Ridge Overlook Trail with its narrow pathways but great views along the way. Eagle point trail way was great too plenty of speculation views on this trail too. I mountain biked only half of the canyon rim trail it was nice but decided to turn around when I saw a buffalo blocking the trail up ahead. I really liked seeing the prairie dogs. It was definitely fun to explore this unique landscape.
Jonathan Palmer — Google review
This place is beautiful and peaceful. My family visited for the day. The check in staff were welcoming and informative especially since it was our first time there. My only gripe is that the bathrooms by the welcome center could use some love and attention. There were plenty of places to camp out and a lake to boat or fish. Buffalo roam freely as well as prairie dogs. Bring lots of water as it gets hot but overall beautiful experience!
L Welch — Google review
We went on an 8 hr hike here, deep into the canyon. It was beautiful. Just be sure if you're hiking in hot weather to bring plenty of water and protein. The deeper in that you go, you'll find 'fern cave'. It's a great place to refresh yourself, with the creek running through. Watch out for wild Buffalo.

Neat State Park with great canyon views. Lots and I mean LOTS of Bison. As long as you stay away they are no harm. Beautiful creatures and the scenery was awesome. Camped out the back of my Hummer ( VERY COMFY )..... Will definitely be back.

Beautiful park. Went second week of December and it wasn’t busy. Took upper south prong trail to fern cave (flat for about a mile then it becomes challenging hiking up the canyon then back to flat trail). Did an out and back on upper north prong trail (easy flat trail. Couldn’t find the POI on this trail). Then took Haynes Ridge Trail (flat and easy) to the overlook. A must see, very beautiful view of the park. Then took north prong spur to the parking lot and took the rd back to the south prong trailhead.

Fantastic park. It is the home of the Texas State Bison herd. We only saw 1 as the park is quite large but were told there are a couple hundred. There is a nice prairie dog colony that you drive right through. You're able to drive through part of the park giving views of multiple landscapes. We saw a coyote and multiple types of birds. The amphitheater has a colony of birds who use dirt to build nests under the awning.
John Barnhart — Google review
Very nice State park in TX, lots of nice scenery, nice trails and an amazing looking park. There's a scenery road you can drive along, or you can park up and take one of the trails.
There are bison that you are able to see up close, they usually are along the roads or next to their scratching posts, and they are majestic creatures.
There is a self check-in if you arrive outside the opening hours of the visitors centre, however it requires cash, so be prepared when you arrive!
Can recommend wholeheartedly, a lovely place to visit.
Alex — Google review
Visited this park during the winter storm weekend so it was a crisp 7°F, which meant no hiking for me. I arrived around 9am and there was no one in the park aside from a few rv campers. As soon as I drove towards the park after the visitors center, I saw bison right on the road. It was such a great way to start my day. The drive in this park is definitely one of my top 5 favorites. It's relaxing and no matter which direction you're looking the scenery is stunning! I will be back to hike!
Vivian Pan — Google review
We’ve stayed here twice so far and have loved it both times. The RV sites are large and private. Bison walked thru the campground both times we were there, which was so fun to watch. There are also cute prairie dogs near the campground. Our absolute favorite part of all are the trails though….they are spectacular!
Brittany B — Google review
Absolutely love camping here with my kids. There's usually not very many people here so there's not a lot of noise and you can really enjoy the silence and the sounds of nature. The only downside is you do have to pack in to the tent sites just a little bit so make sure you bring a cart or something similar to haul your stuff down and back up. There's always a lot of Wildlife and there are raccoons that will steal your food if you don't have it put away properly. They do know how to open a tote and a cooler so I bring bungee cords to wrap around. Definitely worth the hour and a half drive from Amarillo.
Kat Holmes — Google review
Even though I'm from east Texas, I grew to love west Texas when I lived out there. This is a wonderful representation of west Texas. The terrain is rugged and you can still see to the horizon and beyond. All the trails are amazingly well maintained and the campsites offer amazing views. I would strongly recommend the campsites in the upper to mid 50s in the little red tent area.

My FAVORITE Texas State park!! Has the BEST hiking hands down! The scenery seems flat and lackluster until you travel beyond the Honey Flats! Absolutely gorgeous here! I love the Little Red Tent Camping area.

This park has breathtaking views, and the buffalo are everywhere grazing and enjoying themselves. It will take several visits to hike all the trails and see what this park has to offer completely.
Deana Sprinkles — Google review
Absolutely beautiful state park. Seeing the Bison herd was memorable. The trails that we hiked were all a wonderful experience. The only thing about the park that was kind of disappointing was the condition of the restrooms and showers. They were pretty old and really could use a remodel and refresh.
Michael Dahle — Google review
Beautiful park with absolutely stunning views and wildlife. It's a little on the rougher side but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Curb your expectations, it won't be the Hilton and the wildlife are wild... Bring spare tp just in case.
Ben Jamin — Google review
This park really leans into the "wild" aspect of the area.
Bison roam the park as they please, sheep climb amongst the steep ridgelines, coyotes get chatty once the sun sets, and it's literally a breath of fresh air!
With camping options ranging from electric and water sites for RVs, to equestrian campgrounds, there's an option for anyone (even primitive camping)!
It's also less frequented than nearby Palo Duro which makes reservations easier. Oh and their restroom and shower facilities are some of the cleanest I've seen at any park in the state.
My only nitpick was that on certain trails the path wasn't always super clear which led to some unintentional night hikes: but hey, there's almost no light pollution so the stars are a sight to behold
I'm not a cyclist so I didn't try the trailway, but it seemed popular enough so I'd imagine it's worth the effort.
Overall, a very nice and quiet getaway; I definitely recommend.

The Tower Station & U-Drop Inn Cafe is a historical landmark dating back to 1936, featuring an art deco design. It has been prominently featured in the animated film Cars. The site currently functions as a museum and gift shop where visitors can find unique souvenirs. Ozzie's cafe, located on-site, offers homemade pie and other tasty food options for visitors to enjoy. Additionally, the adjacent museum and shop are highly recommended for those seeking an authentic Route 66 experience.
Was so excited to see this landmark that ended up in the movie Cars.

She took our picture and then told us another SSR had come through several years ago... She still had the picture of it!

The cafe is open but has limited lunch only hours. The food was very good and the service was wonderful. Remember that your visiting a small rural town, a little patience and kindness will get you everywhere.
The Museum and gift shop is a nice walk threw with lots of local information. The site itself is worth stopping for. Thank goodness the town of Shamrock had the vision to preserve this piece of Route 66.
The public bathrooms are clean and well stocked even in the middle of the night. The overall look and feel of this piece of history is amazing day or especially at night. If your looking for big city polish and fake shine this may not be your favorite stop but if you are looking for authenticity and small town heart then this will be your favorite stop too!

Wonderful Route 66 stop full of history. It’s got a Tesla supercharger which is why we stopped. But a fun stop for kids and adults, the gift shop has got some neat little things and the nicest people work there. Only gripe is the outside bathroom could really use some updating. It’s in pretty rough condition.

A stunning iconic service station of a bygone era. Nicely preserved, maintained and clean. We pulled right up to the pumps for some memorable photos, had the whole place to ourselves. The small souvenir shop was closed but it didn't matter. I'm sure the locals take it for granted, but a don't-miss stop for old cars guys and Rt 66 fans.

Conoco Tower Station And U Drop Inn
Route 66 Shamrock, Texas
When we first arrived in Shamrock, Texas, we knew we wanted to visit The Conoco Tower Station and the U-Drop Inn Café. We met both Olita and Hazel at the station, and we talked about the history of the station. They also were kind enough to show us the U Drop Inn Café even though it was closed for the day. The interior and decor were beautiful and made you feel as if you were stepping back in the past. We also met the owner of the U Drop Inn Cafe. His name is Ozzy. We spoke for a bit about the cafe, its history, and his menu items. He was great and always had a smile on his face. We also talked about how we would like to promote his business to our Route 66 groups. We told him that we would be back the next day to have lunch before leaving Shamrock for Oklahoma.
The following day, we had lunch at the cafe. The menu is limited and offers different sandwiches, paninis, salads, shakes, and homemade pies. We ordered several items from the menu. I had the Green Chile Chicken Panini, which came with a side of fries. The Panini was delicious and had lots of flavor. Chuck had Voilas Classic Chicken Salad Sandwich, and he stated that it was one of the best he has had. We also both ordered a couple of milk shakes, and they were both great they were flavorful, creamy, and smooth. Of course, we wanted to try some homemade pie. I can't remember what kind of pie it was, but I know the crust was flaky, and the filling was delicious. We later found out from Ozzy that his mother made the pies. I'm sure she makes other delicious pies because what we had was great. We also found out that Ozzy's parents own another restaurant, which we will try on our next visit.
Overall, we had a great experience with wonderful food and excellent customer service from Ozzy.

Must take time in your trip to stop by and have lunch or homemade pie at Ozzie's cafe there at the U drop inn. My daughter and I shared a shake sitting at the counter. The museum and shop next door is also a must see, as the ladies there made a memorable visit for us. This is the quintessential Route 66 experience.

Great restoration of this iconic gas station. The visitors center is stocked with Route 66 apparel and souvenirs as well as some vintage items, old photographs, painting of the station and other interesting items. Staff is friendly and there is one small bathroom inside and a 24 hour bathroom in the front of the building. Bathrooms are vintage also. Great place to take photos of the vintage gas station and the Cafe.

What a gem this is! So much effort has been put into restoring it, and the man running the Cafe has been continually improving the interior and exterior and expanding the hours and menu since reopening it several years ago.
The gift and tourism shop in the old gas station part of the building is very nice.
We found this because those in charge were wise enough to accept the installation of a Tesla Supercharger array that is part of Tesla's nationwide network that allows electric vehicles to travel x-country.
We have stopped here twice a year for the last three years, and we would stop even if we were not driving an EV.

Fantastic piece of nostalgia for Route 66 explorers. Unfortunately, the Cafe and visitors center were closed, but the grounds are well kept. The gas station itself was used in the Disney movie "Cars".
The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge spans 59,020 acres and is home to bison, elk, longhorn cattle, wild turkey, and a thriving prairie dog community. Visitors can explore nature trails, go hunting or fishing, camp out in the wilderness or indulge in rock climbing. The visitor center features exhibits showcasing the diverse flora and fauna of the sanctuary. A giant glass window provides breathtaking views of rolling grasslands stretching as far as the eye can see.
Such a fantastic place to hike! This was my first time, and I spent a couple hours hiking the trails in Dog Hollow before driving to the prairie dog town, a couple of the lakes, and a mountain trail. Everything was just stunning, and the trails were well maintained and clearly marked. The bison are all over the place and just extraordinary to watch, and the longhorns were beautiful. If you’re looking to see prairie dogs, I actually saw a lot more near the Holy City (see the two black dots on map image) than at the official prairie dog town. They’re so ridiculously cute!

We headed out for a day of hiking in the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge. We expected it to be somewhat busy due to the timing during Fall Break but the trail we chose was not crowded and we were afforded peace and quite to enjoy the vast blue sky, the prairie, and the granite mountains that towered to both sides of us as we made our way through the canyon along the Narrows Trail.
I do not recommend this particular trail. It was not marked and was nothing but boulders and rocks and frustration. However, the first .25 of a mile is well worth it for the views alone. The Oklahoma horizon truly is beautiful in its own way. There are plenty of other trails to choose from.
We saw a lot of buffalo (don’t get too close!), cool lizards, evidence of elk, and longhorn cattle. If you haven’t been out there I highly recommend getting out for a day trip.

I absolutely love this place. I usually camp in the backcountry which is usually peaceful since they only give out a handful of permits and the best spots are fairly secluded. Bison wander freely here and I have woken up/returned to some pretty close to the campsite. The nearby military base does fly jets over the area as well as shoot artillery which can be noisy. Especially the jets. Still love it out here. Favorite trails have to be the Charon's Garden trail and the climb up Elk Mountain. The Bison Loop is also pretty nice.

Drive to the top of Scott mountain and see Texas to the south and the west. Great view.
Buffalo, long horn cattle and Elk roam free here so mind the posted speed.
Plenty of trails and camp sites and places to picnic....several small lakes to see as well.
Yes, in my pictures, those are tarantula's. They migrate through every year and its not uncommon to see several crossing the roads.
Enjoy your visit, its simply beautiful here.

Great blooms in summer. There are plenty of places to go for road trip ,hiking, photography, picnic and camping. Best time to go in summer is between 6-30- 7-30 am. It gets too hot after 10am. Also parking area gets full after 9am. Some sites have its own restroom just next to the parking area. Few places don’t have restrooms. Each section of the Wichita wildlife has its own unique scenic beauty. Restaurants are outside the wildlife area.

Beautiful landscape and a relatively easy drive from DFW. The narrows trail is short but offers gorgeous views. It’s free of charge. Be careful of ticks as it’s teeming out there.

You ever been to a national park? This one is pretty good bot too bad. Wicked trails and sick spots to go check out on foot.
Nothing too bad to say about this place, besides being located in OKLAHOMA.
. The weather is beautiful right now check it out.
There are also a plethora of picnic tables and sites that you can bring your family to for a fun lunch. Even your pregnant wife.

Family vacation for Spring Break 2024 was spent in and around the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. This was a nice peaceful trip. We went on a few hikes and saw lots of animals. The trails are dog friendly. The bison viewing is excellent here!! We also saw wild turkeys, longhorns, prairie dogs, deer, and elk!! Even if you aren’t someone who hikes, you can still see all of the wildlife by driving through the area.

We absolutely love this. We have been camping and hiking here since 2001. We just returned home from a week at the Refuge and it never disappoints. You can make all your reservations online. Camp Doris is our favorite place to camp. We love hiking the Narrows, The 40 Ft Hole, Mt. Scott, the Longhorn trail (which is the backside of the Kite Trail system), as well as the Charon Gardens Wilderness area. We will go back year after year.

Nice to have a place to hike around here, and even better it's free! Start at the visitor center (no signs but take the first right when you enter the park.) Nice staff & exhibits. Then head out for buffalo & hikes! Some trails are not clearly marked or labeled so stay aware of where you are when hiking.

Y'all need to come see this! Bartholomew the Bison was a sweetheart (yes I named him). It was beautiful and quiet and oh so majestic! For a tranquil good time, go see Bartholomew and his buddies out there. So fun! The kids were terrified as Bartholomew got super close to our car... but he's a peaceful guy. Just stay in your car and be calm. Leave em be. The prairie dogs were scootin' about and were super cute to see. We will definitely come back!

This is a small refuge for a motorcycle ride, but it is a great one. The prairie dogs, wild longhorns, elk and bison are fun to see. The place smells so fresh and clean, it is wonderful. There is so many hiking trails and lakes to fish in. Mount Scott has the best views! Places like the Holy City are worth a drop by. Camp Doris is a good place to camp if you want to hike and get primitive. I will ride this place again.

This is a hidden gem of diversity in Ecoregions. For the avid hiker there are many trails, some rough and rugged, some available to those challenged with disabilities. Visit Mount Scott first, and get an overview of what you will encounter- then make a trip to the Visitor’s Center to enhance your knowledge. We recommend a photo shoot in the Parallel Forest and a burger in Meers. Tour the town & architecture of Medicine Park for more historical context. We enjoyed our stay at the Hummingbird House. You will see so much wildlife: Bison, Elk, Turkey and smaller critters too. Our family loves to visit the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge!

This place has been therapeutic. Always great scenery. Love the wildlife here. Will always want to come back. The trails are nice. Its a great place to just get lost on a trail to find yourself and enjoy the surroundings. We went on Charons Garden trail and loved every inch of it.

Absolutely AMAZING! So beautiful and quiet. We did a lot of hiking and saw plenty of buffalo. It's one particular one that hangs out at the Holy City and is a great spot for getting up close photos. Very serene and pretty. The plains, the prairie dogs, the business center etc were all fantastic. I went for my b'day. I've always wanted to see the buffalo in their natural habitat. We even hiked up a mountain and walked up on a full grown buffalo in the woods! What fun but extremely scary. The views are like anything I've ever saw. We drove up the mountain and it had the best views of Oklahoma. Will definitely return. Not to mention it's free. Beautiful park and friendly people in the visitor center. Only suggestion is to give out a real map of the park, not just hiking and camping locations. Hands down best trip ever. You won't regret it!!

Did a quick drive thru and made a couple quick stops. I saw bison patties. The entrance to Mt. Scott was closed off to cars Sunday March 17 2024. I don't know why. The park/ refuge is a beautiful piece of nature. It has lots of picnic table areas.

If you're looking for just a quick day trip to escape and get in nature this place is perfect. There's lots of hiking trails, a lake, wild buffalo and long horns and a cute little town, medicine park, to fill your day with. I would recommend picking a cooler day though as there's not a lot of shade or tree coverage, bring lots of water too.

Beautiful place with outstanding wildlife that can be seen just from sitting in your car. Elk, bison, prairie dogs, longhorns (not as special but still), whitetail deer, etc., can all be seen just driving around the refuge. Mount Scott is perfect for sunrises and sunsets.

What an amazing example of Oklahoma! You can see the beauty of the plains and grasslands, see bison, Prarie dogs, and longhorn cattle- boulder jump, fish in the river- witness hawks hunting fish- and take in the gift shops in Medicine Park! Next time I’ll stay in Medicine Park! Visitors Center was nice- loved Quannah Parker Dam and the Elk Mountain Trail! I also enjoyed Holy City- would love to see the passion play

Great place to see. This place was built to tell the story of Jesus and his crucifixion. Excellent thing. They have plays around Easter you should go see, the city is lit up and you sit on the side of a mountain to watch. So interesting and if you love Jesus, it's an even more special place to visit. Great gift shop and scenery.

Such a neat place to visit and love that is supported only by donations. The buildings are so unique. It feels like you are stepping back in time. There is a cute gift shop also with all kinds of fun and different souvenirs or just items anyone would want. They also do an Easter Pagant every year and have for many many years.

Quite a moving place! They have such beautiful unique stone architecture, they set up little stations re-inacting Mount Olive where Jesus was crucified, they ahev a chapel you can have weddings at for around $300 or so. They have a stone figure of Jesus and a stone actually from MT Olive carved into the statue pillar.
It's very peaceful and quite. They have a nice lovely gift shop. You can walk the grounds and look at everything some buildings you can actually go up in. :)

Oh man was this place super nice but in def need of some love and supervision to help maintain the site. Bathrooms were nice camp style setup and the views are BREATH TAKING...
The statue with the rock from The Mount of Olives in Jeresulem is beautifully built and is def what one needs in a world like this. God Bless you all and safe travels

An outdoor space created for the Passion Play unique to the Wichita Mountain. There are several "stage" areas created for the telling of Jesus’ birth to resurrection if you have a chance to watch it. Otherwise, it is worth visiting and simply sit down and enjoy the surrounding vista, including a statue of Jesus.

I wanted to check this place out, but it was closed when I came through the area. I took this picture from a distance since it was the best I could do under the circumstances. I found after the fact that it doesn't open until later in the afternoon on the weekends, so something to keep in mind if you're going out of your way to see this place like I was. I had thought it was just an open site you could visit while checking out the refuge - my fault for not looking into it further. 3 stars in an attempt at giving it a neutral view ;)

A unique experience in the Wichitas that is definitely worth stopping by. We felt as if we were in a different era while we were here.
The cobblestone architecture is unique, and we enjoyed climbing up the restored structures. The chapel has a lot of history and is adorned with paintings all over. The city overlooks the hilly landscape of the Wichita Mountains. There is a small gift shop worth checking out.
The parking is huge and there is a restroom on site.

Interactive museum charting interior US history, with an 1830s trading post, schoolhouse & depot.
I absolutely LOVE this place! I ended up buying the family membership for $99 because my kids have so much fun. I was blown away the first time we came because this museum is not what I would expect in the best way. I expected it to be like any other museum where you just read about the history and see all of the art and collections… NOPE… it’s even better. They have a really cool simulator that you sit in and hear the story about terrible Tuesday while feeling like you are THERE experiencing it. They have a beautiful gallery that shows you photos from very, very long ago! It’s just beautiful. It’s a great place for all of the family because they’ve got things for adults and so much interactive things for children to do. I strongly recommend checking it out, it’s worth it… AND right out front of the museum you get to see a bunch of cute little prairie dogs!

I lived here a while without going because I thought a museum would be too grown up for my 6 year old twins and 4 year old, but this is an interactive hands on museum that kids can enjoy too. We got the membership and plan to visit all of the OMN museums in Oklahoma. They even have crafts. There are dinosaurs there currently but I think that exhibit will change. We spent a couple hours and plan to go back every now and then and get the most use out of the membership. Go early if you want to get there before the crowds on weekends.

I was very impressed with this museum. I guess I expected a dry, old school museum. But my five and seven year olds very much enjoyed the fact that at least every other exhibit had something to make or hands-on do. They equally enjoyed the kids play items upstairs as much as the history stuff downstairs. We were there for 3 1/2 hours and we probably could’ve made it way more than four if we had brought lunch and taken a lunch break.
Lauren Hurley — Google review
Really get to know the history, and have great interaction for adults and kids alike! The tornado exhibit is a must! If you miss it just ask for it as you will see what looks like "stuff" piled up but walk behind it and you go into a shelter. Press the button to begin the presentation and HANG ON!
There is an entry fee but well worth it.

It was alright. I think it kind of diminished what Native people went through by saying the buffalo were killed almost to extinction for land clearing. The buffalo were killed to starve the Indians and force them onto reservations, all for settlers to take their land. That part is important to remember.
While there is a lot of settlers' history in this museum, I did see a lot of Native art and beadwork and Geronimo's walking cane that he carved. I loved the black and white photographs, I think they're in the Tingley collection. The beadwork was also exquisite. I also learned about Maria Tallchief, the first Native American prima ballerina. I didn't know about her accomplishments and when I saw her black and white display, I was a little starstruck. My daughter and I are Native American, and she happens to love ballet so learning about Maria Tallchief was great.
The upstairs is dedicated almost entirely to kids, so I would say it's a very kid friendly museum. My 3 year old daughter loved the big Lite Briteon the wall, the sensory room with all sorts of things to climb and buttons to push and big foam blocks to play with. There were also some fossils you can touch in this museum and my daughter loved those too.
For my 3 year old daughter and I to visit, we paid $18 for the both of us to enter. I liked it well enough and would bring my daughter back.

The less travelled path of Oklahoma, a museum for all ages. With an extensive collection of Native American artifacts, each comes with informative description, or at least speculation, you can easily spend hours without realizing. In fact, the museum has acquired a lot of Native American merchandise from a shop that is already out of business. Furthermore, the exhibits related to the sorrow and sufferings of Native Americans due to forceful displacement are touching. Once scattered across the country, but was confined to a "reservation" known as the land of unorganized territory, the homes of Native Americans further shrank after allotment with the surplus open to settlement at the beginning of the 20th century. This is the sad history of Oklahoma.
Another aspect worth noting is that there are lots of interactive exhibits for children to enjoy, including a plastic bison from which younger visitors can learn about anatomy, and a mini archeological experience providing a glimpse of what uncovering artifacts is like. My niece didn't want to leave.

A good stop for an hour or more. Very interesting information about the area and it's history. I also enjoyed an entertaining "tornado" shelter experience. They also have outdoor exhibition with old nice steam engine! Finally, the lawn in front it populated with Prarie Dogs, it's funny to watch them.

Large, modern, informative museum. See what it's like to be in a shelter as a tornado hits, explore the largest satellite map I've ever seen! Be sure to read the exhibits, many of them had multiple flip-throughs to read. I only docked one star because many of the outside exhibits were under construction (10/2023). An added bonus was the Prairie Dog colony that surrounded the museum. Hundreds of the little critters would bark their warnings at us if we got too close. They would duck for cover at about 50 feet. Cute!

We stayed in Lawton for the night and looked up what to do there. I found this museum, so we decided to check it out. I'm glad we did. The staff was wonderful. The museum was very informative. If you have children, there were a lot of fun interactive things for them to do. If you want to get a feel for what it was like as the great plains developed, then you should visit this museum. We only had 2 hours, you probably need to allow at least 4 hours, especially if you have children. We had my 94 year old mom with us, and she enjoyed it and was able to get around just fine.

What a great place, with all of the hands on activities your kids will love it. The tornado simulator maybe a bit much for younger children but as for the rest it's a must. The staff was knowledgeable and friendly. The souvenir store was a bit small and as a result it didn't offer much. Overall it's a place where learning is fun.

Lucy Park is always a good option to either go walk, play disc golf or to just go feed the ducks at the duck pond. The walking trail is a loop, a little over a mile I think maybe more and the walk to the falls is a short one depending where you park. It's a nice casual park with open fields in the center and plenty of benches with pavilions and two separate basket ball courts. It is well kept and there is also a playground area for you to take you kids to play and swing. The picture of the falls I posted was taken and edited by me personally and doesn't look like that in real life.

Its lush greenery and meandering pathways offer a tranquil escape for visitors seeking respite from urban life. Families gather for picnics on the well-manicured lawns, while joggers and walkers enjoy the serenity of tree-lined trails. Scenic area featuring trails to town, camping areas & mineral-rich waters for swimming.
I loved this park. We stayed for a couple of days where we were able to hike two trails. One of which was right on the lake and the other one went along the river. The trails were maintained and well marked. The campground itself is beautiful. There are several sites that are right on the lake. There were quite a few people camping here, even in January but it never seemed crowded or loud. I felt very safe in this campground, and would love to come back during warmer weather.

We stayed in the Post Osk campground and loved it. Even though there were campsites around us, it felt semi-private. Sites were big and laid out nicely. I was happily surprised that they didn't have a fire ban. The town of Mineral Wells is less than 2 miles up the road, which was great because we needed a couple of things.
The Penitentiary Hollow trail was a nice hike and the best in the Park.
Restrooms were well kept.
I didn't give 5 stars for 2 reasons:
1) The other hiking trails were just "meh". They were long, but no scenic overlooks.
2) They have a trading post on site, but it is privately owned and they do not take your State Park's pass for a discount.

The lake is so clean and beautiful. I kayak and they have a kayak/canoe launch ramp like I've never seen before and it's such a great idea! I had reservations and check in was fast and friendly. It's very quiet this time of year and I love it here. The trailer spots are all back-in but they have generous room to do so . Normally I avoid parks with no pull thru spots but I was in and set up in about 10 minutes. Large picnic tables, fire rings and separate BBQ pits at every site. The bathrooms have hot showers and flush toilets. There are Bird watching blinds and great fishing. And the little library to share a nook to read. Have fun and Happy New Year 2024🕛🎉🎉

Love this place! We went for a hike at 7am. Felt like we had the park to ourselves. The trails were great! The equine trails are wider and flatter. The primitive trail is more challenging with rocks and elevation changes. You can really do some distance with these trails. We ended up doing a little over 6 miles at the cross timbers trail.

Beautiful place for hiking. We went for a hike & to take a kayak out and enjoyed it so much we decided to purchase a yearly pass. It's much larger than I was expecting. The park staff is friendly and knowledgeable. It's worth a trip out whether it's for water fun, hiking, or both! It looks to have some pretty great rv & camping areas. Absolutely beautiful, many miles of gorgeous landscape to explore. Park store is closed Tuesday and Wednesday and we found that quite inconvenient but truly enjoyed the park.

Great local state park. Close to DFW for a day trip or to stay in a hotel at Mineral Wells town less than 10 minutes away.
Great hiking.
Beautiful rock formations to crawl around in and on.

What fun park! We rode the trailway from the state park to the town and back and it was a great ride. Also loved exploring Penitentiary Hollow and the the lakefront trail. Good campsites and clean bathrooms! They haven’t been updated yet but you can tell the park hosts care for the park! Can’t wait to come back and ride more of the trailway and explore more trails!

Loved the park! My 3rd official one so far on my State Park passport. The rocky terrain makes for a fun technical hike. The rock climbing area with huge boulders was the highlight. That place was so amazing. I heard there was a section somewhere nearby that you can make your way through a narrow canyon like crevices. Probably best I didn't find it, I wouldn't have fit through anyways.

This casino is so huge and vast with many entrances. You will see live music at few bars which gives a good enthusiasm to the surroundings. I found the single bottled beer prices were a bit high. Also, the Black Jack is more popular game here. 💵♣️♠️♦️♥️🃏
Easy way to redeem cash from the lottery game tickets at the kiosks.

WinStar World Casino and Resort is a massive casino complex that offers a modern and spacious environment for gaming enthusiasts. The resort features an array of dining options, shops, a golf course, and an outdoor pool. Visitors can expect a seamless flow throughout the facility with numerous restaurant choices strategically placed around the resort. The casino boasts a wide selection of games including traditional table games like poker and blackjack as well as the latest slot machines with exciting bonus features.
We stayed at the hotel, enjoyed the casino, and ate at a couple of the restaurants. They do everything with excellence. The place is huge! I particularly like the idea that they do have a non-smoking casino area. The place is well ventilated. You can play the penny slots to the high-roller events. There is something for everyone. Although the pool wasn't open, we lounged in the area outside the pool. We had a beautiful view from our hotel room. There is something for everyone! I'm not a gambler but I enjoyed the slots with $40 for many many hours. The other couple made enough winnings to pay for both our hotel rooms, food, and the gas from Dallas. It was a one day trip that was worth every penny. We plan to return the next time we are in the area.

It was good and it was bad. Coming from someone who used to work at Choctaw, this was better in some ways, but worse than other ways. Without getting too into details I will just list my key takeaways from my night prior. It was hard to find floor staff. I heard not a single cocktail wait staff member from 6pm-10pm. Trying to find stuff was also difficult, we had to bother the cashiers or security that we caught up with to ask for directions to where things were. The players club line was out the door long but a lovely staff member was helping new members and pulling them out of the long line which was nice. The look of the entire building was nice, a few sections that felt disconnected, but otherwise it was great. The amount of food choices were also great even if prices were a bit high. Lastly, we left earlier than anticipated because of the cigarette smell. It was so overwhelming even with the no smoking sections. When we got into our car to go home we felt sick. I feel like we would come back if friends wanted to go, but we may just go to Choctaw instead for the new casino they built since it doesn't smell like smoke at all in the new section.

The new Cascades pool is very nice. They have some issues to work out for sure though. Getting in, even though we had reserved spots, was a mess. We had to wait in line behind people trying to decide what package they wanted to pay for so it took 45 minutes to get in. All this while they had already been shut down several times that day because of weather. So we missed over an hour of our reserved 5 hours just getting in. Then 1 hour in they shut it down for weather again. I understand you have to do that for safety. But there needs to be a better system to charge for time used in certain situations. There were people there that had reserved the private bungalows that paid $2500 for a full day and got to use it for a few hours. Maybe there are different terms for those. My $50 for 2 reserved lounge chairs and an umbrella got me 1 hour of pool time. And no rainchecks are given. I love the place, not the setup. Will have to try again to see if it gets sorted out.

Went with my aunt, quality time at a awesome venue. We enjoyed ourselves. We had questions from time to time and was always met with friendliness and kindness. Look forward to going back next month. I recently had the pleasure of visiting Win Start World Casino and I must say, the experience exceeded my expectations. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with a warm and friendly atmosphere that made me feel welcomed.
First and foremost, the casino offers a vast selection of games to cater to all types of gamblers. Whether you're a fan of traditional table games like poker and blackjack, or prefer the latest slot machines with exciting bonus features, Win Start World Casino has it all. The variety of games kept me entertained for hours.
The overall ambiance of the casino is stunning. The interior is well-designed and visually appealing, with tasteful lighting and comfortable seating areas. I appreciated the attention to detail in creating an environment that feels luxurious and upscale.
The staff at Win Start World Casino are an absolute delight. Friendly, knowledgeable, and always ready to assist, they made sure that my experience was nothing short of exceptional. From helping me with game rules to providing suggestions on which games to try, their customer service was outstanding.
One aspect that impressed me about Win Start World Casino was their commitment to ensuring a safe and responsible gambling environment. They have strict protocols in place to promote responsible gambling and provide resources for any guests who may need assistance. This level of care for their customers' well-being demonstrates their dedication to responsible gaming.
In terms of amenities, the casino offers a variety of dining options to suit all tastes. From casual dining to fine dining experiences, there is something to satisfy every craving. The quality of the food was fantastic, and the service in the restaurants was impeccable.
The only reason I'm not giving Win Start World Casino a full five stars is because I experienced some minor inconveniences with the parking situation. The parking lot was quite crowded, and finding a spot took longer than expected. However, once inside the casino, the overall experience made up for this minor setback.
Overall, my visit to Win Start World Casino was thoroughly enjoyable. The variety of games, the excellent customer service, and the overall ambiance left a positive impression on me. I would highly recommend this casino to anyone looking for a great gambling experience.

Got here around 7pm and hit the casino. Make sure to register to get your Club Passport (and your chocolate bar) if you are a first timer. Water, soda, and coffee is self-serve and free, bars are located throughout. Plenty of parking at 7pm, but lot starts to get fuller around 10pm. There is a smoking and non smoking section within the casino. Bathrooms are spotless! Plenty of action and walking; take your time and explore. There are plenty of places to grab something to eat; prices are better than out in town. All employees are friendly and helpful. I passed by this place several times and never stopped, so glad I did this time. Come and enjoy the lights, drinks, food and entertainment! Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Wow! This casino knows what people want. Easily larger than some Vegas casinos. Flow keeps moving throughout, no traffic jams. Plenty of restaurants choices placed evenly throughout with lots of pricing choices. Same with bathrooms… you will always be close to one and they are clean. The many center circular open bars is a nice place to sit…have a beverage and people watch. Really enjoyed my visit. Oh and each “city” has its own entrance, each city has different slots. New York is smoke free. In the very back/end the gaming area is very dark, cool & quiet on purpose. I also like shopping in the nice shops.

My husband and I had an absolutely wonderful time. Our room was beautiful, spacious and the walk in shower was a plus. The food was good on the resort side. We did the buffet which was okay but the food was either cold or a tad bit lukewarm not hot at all. As to the casino, it was nice to have a non smoking section even though some people were still smoking in the non smoking area. There is construction going on but we couldn't hear a thing. The resort side staff and amenities is why I still gave a 5 star review. God willing we will be planning another trip soon.

Great casino.. Great electronic games. “Okay” selection of table games with the tables usually packed.

This is listed as the world's largest casino, 600,000 square footage; however, I don't think it's the best! You have to see the beautiful casinos in Vegas first to agree! This hotel is decorated by small parts of the world. Lots of slot machines and great food! I think it needs a few more shops with better and lower prices!!! We had a great time! Got some exercise in walking! The place is 2 miles long! It's beautiful 😍 great place to go on a rainy day for food if you don't gamble!

WinStar has extremely great hotel service and cleanliness. The staff is at every corner from check-in to check-out ready to help. The cleaning staff is constantly cleaning and sanitizing. They’re service is top-notch. WinStar has improved in the hotel service year after year. As for the food service, there are some outstanding places, mediocre and some that could use a friendly greeting upon entrance (hint: buffet).

1st time here. Nice casino. Bed sucked. Way too hard. Was supposed to be a queen it felt like a full. One wrong move, and I would've been on the floor. It's too small for a couple. Went to the buffet, and the food wasn't good. But overall, the casino was gorgeous, and everyone was friendly.

This place is so much fun and so spacious! My dad is disabled and in a wheelchair so the floors we're spread out enough for him to go machine to machine without any issues! The staff are very nice and friendly and the Dallas Cowboys bar and grill is a delicious place and not too pricey compared to being in a casino.

Just an amazing and beautiful casino. I have been all over Vegas and nothing is this big and nice in Vegas. I play slots all the time everywhere I go , and the odds here were very decent at this place. I won a fair amount of money every day over three days. They have a generous players club with good rewards and free slot play. They had a nice selection of different types of restaurants, and the food was reasonably priced. All the employees were very courteous and friendly and helpful. The only downside is that the rooms at the hotel are quite expensive, but you can stay in nearby Gardiner Texas for a reasonable cost. Love this place ! I was totally impressed and I will definitely be back. It’s a great alternative to Vegas because it’s so big and they have so many machines you won’t get tired being here for a few days.

I always have a great time here even if I don't win. They have good shopping, great food and the slots are fun. If you are sensitive to cigarettes or smoke smells wear a mask as it does have a very, very strong smoky cigarette smell throughout the entire casino. This doesn't bother me however (as I grew up around chain smokers) and it is to be expected in casinos. They also have nice rooms in the hotel as well. If you play a lot they may offer you a free room every so often. I enjoy coming solo or with a group of family and friends. Also, be prepared that this place is HUGE so be sure to bring a comfortable pair of walking shoes as you will walk a lot.

I absolutely love the Vegas vibe here folks. Now my favorite spot in Oklahoma. I always have my plan to quit when ahead right? Nah I had too much fun. This is an adults fantasy land. I played forever and had plenty of chances to quit even or ahead and absolutely 💯 🙃 kept playing these awesome slots that are so easy to navigate through. Hungering for some goodness...try any place here and it's delicious. Yum 😋 who isn't hungry after a work out at the slots but why not have a drink while ya play. Plenty of waitresses here. Pricey yes but I had to cool off after my slot machine went up against the devil. See my videos. It's fun. Peace n Love Be kind

We came for lunch. Great buffet and stayed to play the penny machines. We had a great time. This is a big casino, hotel. We'll maintained, very courteous and kind staff. The customer service staff at the front door provided me with a map of the hotel/casino and made a great suggestion to try the buffet for lunch. Good choice

Did not stay at the hotel, first time here just to take in the atmosphere and give them my $$. Parking was easy, easy on and off the highway. Casino was very clean and new looking, games were cleaner than many other places. Service was good, bars looked stocked well but didn't have time to indulge, next time. Floor employees were helpful and very nice. Plan to come back for a concert and stay at hotel soon.
Went back again and this time ate at the buffet for dinner. Huge dinning room, choices were better than usual, dishes range from American, Chinese, Mexican, Italian, Pizza. Now the desert buffet was spectacular, definitely save room for this. The price is also very reasonable.
My real only issue at this time is the parents that bring their 3-5 kids with them, running around chasing each other or taking up all the seats in a slot area when paying players could be taking up those chairs. This is NOT an area for kids. Leave the kids at home or better yet spend that grocery money to feed them.

While playing in the Rio around 2 am, I was approached by a worker. She had an attitude and said I needed to cash out on my machine so they could service it. There was a security guard escorting them that was present. I told him I had put alot of money in that particular machine for them to tell me I needed to cash out. I asked them how long would that take he said bout 5 or 10 minutes. I printed my ticket and waited. I watched the 2 ladies change out the money boxes on the whole row of machines located where I was playing. They closed every machine except the one I had been playing. I asked the security why didn't they close the machine they knew I was playing. He stated he didn't know. He asked the lady about the machine and she just shrugged her shoulders and said I don't know and kept walking. I told him that i find that very odd that out of all the machines they serviced the very one I was playing stopped working. I felt like the lady purposely did something to the machine because I had been on that same machine for hours and didn't have any problem with it. I don't know what the procedure is when someone is playing on a machine to make them get off. I just really find that ironic that the very machine I was on just stopped working. The security called one of the attendants that wear the burgundy shirts to try and reset it to no avail. She then called a tech. He asked me did they slam the door or hit the machine. I said I don't know. I just know it was working fine and now the screen is black. I would appreciate a response back from a higher up on this matter.

Our 1st time visiting. The place was amazing and beautiful with all the different tall decorated Christmas trees.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐'s
Here is when the ⭐⭐⭐'s started to decrease. We had no reservation but decided we wanted to stay for a few nights. While in the lobby I went on their website to see if they had avail. rooms they did the website was slow loading for me to book a room. We walked up to the desk to book a room instead. The front desk clerk says we have no rooms avail. we mentioned online it shows there are, she repeated herself (others were coming up with no reservations and getting rooms) Rather make a scene we gave up. As we started walking away a Manager overheard the young lady telling us no rooms available and stepped in and said we have rooms avail. let me get you taken care of and immediately got a room $99 plus tax. Once checked in we went to our room they site finally came up, The same room on the site for $79 plus tax so back to the front desk to ask for a adjustment of the difference. I was then told that the price can change per minute, hour and often because it always changing nothing they can do....WOW

WinStar is a great place for concerts and fun. The hall where the shows take place is really nice. Acoustics are good. The visuals are good. Security and ushers are helpful. Advise you show up quite early if you want to get a bite to eat before the show. There are plenty of selections but the lines get really long. Spend the night and just grab a bite after the show.

WinStar is an amazing place! Over 10,000 different kinds slot machines. It seems like miles to get from one end of casino to the other side.
We see people winning jackpots all the time!
The restaurant I recommend Mickey Mantle’s. The food and drinks are top notch.
The Gran Via buffet place has so many options it’s unbelievable. Food is average. We get comped buffet meals that’s why we go there otherwise it would be Mickey Mantle’s.
We have stayed at both the Spa Tower and South Pool Tower with cascade view of pools.
Rooms are comparable. Spa tower I prefer because it’s the newest tower. Rooms are very quiet at night. Never had issues. We request room away from elevator. Rooms are very clean.
We have gone to see numerous concerts at Lucas Live and we highly recommend doing that. Everything is very organized during event. Our favorite seats are the club seating area.
There is lots of parking areas and a garage.
Everything is safe. If you park far away there is a shuttle driving around to pick people up.
It’s really convenient staying at hotel and steps away from casino. Make sure you get a players card to accumulate points and get comps.

Not liking that if you stay in the hotel and valet it costs $15 and there is a 15 to 20 minute wait after paying to get your car. . Not liking a $10 per night resort fee and the pools are closed for the season. Not liking that if you get 2 free buffets but are a single person you lose one of the buffets because they have to be used at the same time. Not liking that there was a coupon in the room key envelop for a free appetizer when you buy 2 entrees but it's only valid Monday through Thursday and I was there Friday and Saturday. I feel like a casino of this magnitude should not be so give me give me give me. I didn't even mention how 2 days and nights of gambling and never won more than $20 because that is the chance you take but the rest no thanks I'll stick to smaller casinos.

I really shouldn't have given it five stars because I really wish they were in Texas but I do like that they are on the border. I love this casino much more than Choctaw. A very nice state park. The walking trails are paved, which is nice for the older ones and makes it easy for bikes and even wheel chairs. Our site was well maintained, and the rangers were friendly. The beach was awesome, and the water quality was the best I've seen in a Texas lake. Bring sand toys for the kids.
The only negative, which was out of the park's control, was an impatient camper at the dump station who seemed to have 150 years of camping experience.
Watch out for the ants for sure!!!
There is no park store, but Pilot Point is nearby and likely has anything you forgot. The Dam Store has great minnows.

Beautiful State Park. It was our first time to visit. We actually just stopped in to explore and have a picnic lunch but after seeing how beautiful the swimming & beach area is, we will definitely be returning. We also stopped off at the Amphitheatre on our way out to watch a snake presentation put on by the Rangers. Ranger Lane, Ranger Mindy and Sharon (hopefully I got that right) all seemed so fun, energetic, and enthusiastic about educating the kids on snakes.

One of the best park to visit during summer. Kindly do online reservations it's not mandatory but most of the times it was fully reserved during weekends even we went twice and redirected to different place due to fully reserved on the online. Getting the place to sit near and around the swim place is also based on first come first server basis and mostly it's occupied. Be early to get your perfect spot. Have fun and Enjoy your day with family and friends👍

Well day spend at #RayRpbertLakeStatePark. This is really well maintained park ample of space for kids to play and enjoy. Attaching map for more details. $7 per adults (13 years and above) there are several places to visit in between before visiting to the final spot, camping is allowed to the designated areas . We missed a sunset but I am damn sure sunset view would be better as this lake is located at south west. You can bring your bike for trail, do swimming at your own risk, skiing, boating and fishing.
This lovely space to visit for a day with group.

We spent a day at the lake walking and photographing wildlife. The sidewalk-like hiking trails were exactly what we needed, since my partner's back injuries limit his ability to do rough terrain these days.
Really enjoyed our visit. The Ranger at the front gate was friendly and informative. The beach was clean. The bathrooms were tidy and stocked.
The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is the $7 per person cost. That would be prohibitive for a lot of folks, and will keep our visits limited. The State of Texas could do better on pricing.

My daughter, grandsons and I visited Ray Roberts Lake on Labor Day. The Park Ranger we worked with was very informative and friendly. We picked up our Texas State Parks Junior Ranger books and the Texas State Parks Passport Books. We are excited to start collecting our stamps for this passport!! We hiked two of the trails: the Lost Pines Trail and the Randy Bell Scenic Trail. The Lost Pines trail was very sandy, but good views of the lake! We really enjoyed the Randy Bell trail since it was paved the whole way, but there were not really good views of the lake! I would definitely recommend either trail and will return again sometime!

We've been coming here for 20 yrs and I almost didn't post about it bc it's getting so busy now! So many people are moving to this area and it's getting so crazy busy that it's hard to book a campsite. But it's a beautiful park and well kept, with clean bathrooms, etc. The playground is brand new, after the last one was covered by water after 2015 flooding. My grandkids love the playground.
The only problem I see with the Park is the amount of deer present! There used to be a few here and there, but now they're overrunning the campgrounds! They come "begging" for food. Something really needs to be done to control the deer population, that's why I took one star off

The museum is filled with interactive and informative exhibits, making it an enjoyable experience for visitors of all ages. It also serves as a working courthouse for the commissioner's court and features various displays, including a small museum. Additionally, it can be rented out for special events like weddings.
Had a great time with kids, they are stroller friendly, the staff was very helpful and inside were a couple of educational and fun exhibits. Lot of yummy restaurants close by.

Super nice docents with lots of knowledge about Denton history. You sign in and then take your own walking tour of the displays on the first floor as well as the court room on the second floor. Go it your own pace. Fun things for kids to play with also. It doesnt matter if your new to Denton, visiting Denton or have lived in Denton for every, there is lots to learn from this museum.

A short tour, but cool to see this great building from the inside. A few nice exhibits, and the attendant had some interesting info.

Beautiful open-air square for family and friends to hang out. Also many fun bars around with college students and locals mingling.

Still a working courthouse for the commissioner's court, the county has made great use of its public space with a variety of displays including a small museum. I understand you can rent out the courthouse for weddings or similar events which would be a nice unique space for such an occasion.

Love hanging at the square, has been a place of music, laughter, families, and couples for over 50 years of my life. I include a photo of The Confederate Soldier, because if we erase our past or hide it away (in a museum) we are doomed to repeat our past.
