The craftsmanship is phenomenal! If you have an appreciation for historical architecture, this might be a place to see. There is a little bit of history here-- as you walk through the hallways you get the feeling what it it might have been like to be here 100+ years ago. The original chairs in the hallway make you wonder about who sat there-- attorneys, famous lawmen, victims, and of course, criminals! But first and foremost, the wood work and craftsmanship is great. The stairwells and other examples of carpentry is impressive! :-)

A gorgeous historic courthouse! It’s amazing that it’s still being used as intended. A true estimate to the craftsmanship of its builders.
Randy D'Antoni — Google review
I came to visit the courthouse as I like old things and history. The architecture is amazing and the woodwork is in and of itself nice to look at. I walked and and went up three flights of stairs to an area they had open with pictures of the courthouse that were very old. There was another flight of stairs that led me up to the top which has an amazing 360 degree view. Well worth the time.

I'm from Los Angeles, CA so visiting Marfa, TX was a huge culture shock to a city boy like myself! The courthouse (along with the rest of the town) is frozen in time, all wood interior, small, and the floors creek when you walk inside. There's huge trees just outside the courthouse that drop pecans! I cracked one open and ate it, yuuumm! Best part about the courthouse is they allow you to walk up to the very top to oversee all of Marfa! When you first walk into the courthouse take a left into the first door and theres a small room where people register their cars, in here theres license plates plastered on the wall and an old bank vault. The staff is awesome and friendly and let me take photos in there.

The interior was really impressive if you can get past the gaudy exterior.

Beautiful courthouse by Alfred Giles in the Second Empire style (1896).
Trey Wilson — Google review
Took the stairs inside courthouse into the dome. Nice views of Marfa.
Vicki Ahrens — Google review
One of the coolest courthouses in Texas. Love the tower with Lady Justice on top. Great architecture.
Very nice but don’t touch the aluminum boxes or take photos unless you wanna be shot by the tour guide
Mattia Siena — Google review
Myself and some friends took a tour of the Judd Foundation on our trip to Marfa and had an amazing time. The pace of the tour was excellent; it didn't feel like we were being rushed through and there was plenty of time to explore the space. The selection of Judd merchandise is also great. Our tour guide did a wonderful job!
Nora Duffy — Google review
You can walk here from basically anywhere in town. It's a really fun tour to do whether you're a Judd fan or not. Looking into an artist's domicile and work space like that is always cool and he lived in a very interesting way. His archive collection is amazing and you get to see some works and his living area as well.
Amy Kugali McWilliams — Google review
I took two different Donald Judd tours and had two different experiences.
The first tour was wonderful, for the guide took time for questions and provided researched based explanations. He was able to inform between fact and inferences. This guy was a younger gentlemen.
However, the second tour was rapid. He did not pause nor give time for questions. Rather, you had to stop him midway and ask a questions. Sometimes you were met with what appeared to be agitation, and other times with blanket statements. This guide was older and wore cowboy boots and a hat.
The younger tour guide was modest. The guide would let you know what was the extent of his thinking rather than a blunt statement.
The older tour guide would get mad if you asked a question to something he already answered.
He didn't understand that the human mind can only hold so much things at one time, and breathing space is necessary to have a thoughtful dialogue about what we guest are not experts in.
The four stars are for the younger guide.
Evan Vargas — Google review
You really have to experience Judd’s work here, as everything has been carefully curated as the artist himself intended. Plus Marfa has its own vibe that distinguishes places like MOMA. If you are a Judd fan, it’s absolutely a must-see!
Jun Deng — Google review
Interesting and informative would be the two best adjectives I would use to describe the docents of our two separate tours. The only recommendation I would have would be to somehow abbreviate the background info given at the beginning of each. This ended up being 30 min of redundancy. At least the info shared was identical at each presentation! Otherwise, worth the time and money.

In 1991, Judd purchased the Print Building—previously home to a bank, a post office, and the Crews Hotel, located on Highland Avenue in downtown Marfa—with the intention of installing twenty-eight rooms on the top floor with the complete collection of his prints, which he had earlier set aside for such a display. He installed two large works in anodized aluminum on the ground floor from his exhibition at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, Germany (August 27–October 15, 1989). Went in the summer, insufferably hot in the exhibits. Our tour guide was rude and the artwork is really nothing special. Wouldn't come back.
Down-to-earth museum about local settlers & military history in a humble 1880s adobe home.
This looks like my backyard actually. I felt like home just appeared in Martha. I recommend going and seeing what they have to offer. A lot of these things are from the golden age… Nostalgia

Marfa is a town I have always wanted to visit and learn more about so this museum was one of my first stops. Martha the docent was incredibly knowledgeable and welcoming. We had a lovely chat with her before enjoying the museum exhibits, which were well curated and so much fun to see. This was definitely a highlight of our trip!

Wonderful local history! The ladies at the entrance were really pleasant and helpful. The collection is well managed and beautifully displayed! (Didn't take many photos because I was so intrigued with everything that I forgot to do so until our last few minutes there... LOL There are many good photos already posted in other reviews here.)
PS... It's free!

I enjoyed this little but free museum. Was a good stop to stretch our legs a little too.

The lady at the front was so sweet and knowledgeable. Full of small town history and unique things. Definitely worth the 30 minutes we spent walking through

Very cool historical information and items from Marfa and surrounding city’s past. I had a wonderful conversation with the woman at the entrance, but unfortunately did not catch her name. It is well worth a trip.

a diverse collection of memorabilia. historical interest in the area. Donations are welcome but not necessary.

A really neat and enlightening place to learn how Marfa came to be. It's free to enter just don't be a dick and leave a donation.

Great little place with a ton of history about the area.
Very interesting! They change the art every 6 months so the exhibit I saw today will be here until April 2020. Check it out while you can!
Kayla Pope — Google review
The Latinx art currently on display was beautiful and intriguing.
Would prefer traditional artwork labels on the walls, though. The description booklet was not super intuitive, and required too much flipping back and forth through pages to match the piece’s number to the description.
Yetzielisse Urgelles — Google review
Unfortunately, they wouldn’t allow us into the museum without a mask. 😷

Kenneth Tam's work is world class! I love the theme, the multimedia, content, sentiment, & so much more!!! Three cheers for Daisy bringing him here & inspiring his vision

I visited Ballroom Marfa specifically to view their latest and greatest exhibition, "Mariposa Relampago" by Guadalupe Maravilla. It is a stunning sight to behold! I also really enjoyed the current exhibit in the gallery, "Perhaps the Truth." Both are definitely worth a visit!

exhibits are free. lowkey pretty cool exhibitions

Not worth the trip, expense Or misguided hype, if it is even open, like area of country and community it is within which has more in common with undeveloped or war tore Middle East but less clean than what is commonly associated with Texas Desert. Proof that Marfa, Not California #2 or Vt #3, is the rotten underbelly of the Art World. Continue on Intestate 10 East to more sober and stable environments.
Clifford D. Mallory — Google review
This place reminds me that I don't understand art sometimes, and that's a good thing. The works made me think outside my normal zone. Great space, would browse again.
Andrew W — Google review
We had some laughs. We are not "connoisseurs of fine art".
Gillian Cox — Google review
Very interesting art gallery and architecture. Not much inside for viewing except some very impressionist standalone and video works.
Andrew Osborn — Google review
Cool showroom. Also has some pieces for sale. Definitely should pop on in.
James Myrick — Google review
Amazing institution that supported the Prada Marfa installation among other art works. Saw a brilliant exhibition on West Texas by artists Carolina Caycedo and David de Rozas. A great place to go if you get tired of Minimalist art of Donald Judd and peers.
Satchel Page and Gaylord Perry have both played on this field that is home to the Sul Ross St. Lobos baseball team and the local independent league team of the Pecos League. Great stadium with beautiful views.

Went to watch the local High School team against a nearby rival.
6 innings of great chance to relax and watch some baseball.)I missed the first one)
The seats we reasonably comfortable and I'm a fairly big guy.
Looked like there wet some concession items available. I did stop by the vendor area. The tone of the entire crowd was energetic but relaxed.
From over heard remarks it seems the netting was replaced recently and things were in generally good repair.
I would certainly go to another game here...

This famous park was once the jewell of minor league parks across the country. It's still very nice. The concessions are reasonably priced - try the brisket nachos, they're awesome. Typically, for a Cowboys game it's 6 dollars admission for those over 12 years old, and free for those under.

History still stands. Fortunately Alpine is small enough that this historic ball field will stand for a long time to come. Great to have this field here. A must see. If a game is being played, it is a must to go.

Cool little spot to watch a ball game. Although the surrounding areas are what I like better. There's a tennis and basketball court right outside of it. As well as a skate park and actual park. Nice spot to just cool out in the summertime

Always a great place to stop and stretch your legs. I have been here 4x. I have seen the light 3 out of 4 times. Tonight, bright white, shifting blue and some tinted reds bobbing near the horizon, rising and the "dancing" in small circles till they fade out and move.
There are clean restrooms, no electricity, and a fair about of visitors. Many will overnight in the parking lot as they travel east or west. I've slept here twice. The highway noise can be annoying, but it's free parking and the night skies are amazing!! Tonight there a nice breeze and I can see lightening on the horizon up near Fort Stockton.

Nice viewing area for the Marfa Lights. Found myself with cool weather, pizza, and Red Bull while waiting for the sunset. Good and interesting crowd at night when I was there. We were all doubting and wondering if we saw something but it was good fun overall.
Restroom facility too.

Unfortunately the lights weren’t active during my visit in Marfa, nonetheless this spot was quite breathtaking and the visitor center building was very cool

Sharing details for the future/first time travellers.
This place is located on Marfa-Alpine highway (US 90)
Detailed signs are kept on either sides before a mile and you can spot the same even during midnight.
Based on research n experience, good time to visit is 10.30pm -1.30am, we stayed from 12.15am -1am and saw the mysterious lights multiple times but was difficult to capture in camera.
(There were telescopes but was hard to focus at night).
Lights appeared in once in 5-10mins intervals and multiple lights emerged in a time merging into one and disappearing as mentioned. This place is in middle of nowhere and was hard to understand the phenomenon.
Limited parking space with details of the Marfa lights is located at entrance wheelchair accessible parking.
Group of 20people consisting of 2families were also there on a Saturday night so didnt feel any safety concern.
Have a good stay and visit.
Wish you good experience to see the Marfa mysterious lights. #HappyVisiting
Deepak — Google review
I didn't see the real lights this time, but I did back in 2005. We did see car traffic south of marfa casting some explainable dancing lights.
David Rickerson — Google review
While we didn't see the marfa lights, we loved coming to the viewing station at sunset and staying to star watch.
Just a lovely place.
Katherine Smith — Google review
Very exciting for first time visit. Weather was a bit drizzly so didn’t make for a long stay. Didn’t see anything crazy, but we’re a few lights. Taillights? Oil rigs? Seems like no one will ever know.
ROY TREVINO — Google review
Great stop and definitely worth the visit. Arrived at 10:30 and the lights were giving up a show. Didn’t think it was happening at first since the lights were white. But then I realized, how did they move across the sky. Then they multiplied. It was really cool.
My visit got sidetracked when a guide started talking about complete non sense. Was frustrating to hear this loud annoying voice… But, others attending were chill and I loved the conversation hypothetical confessions. “What do you think they are?” “What do you think happens if you get closer?”
Grant Daniels — Google review
It was a good place to watch the sunset; being rather cloudy. But, I think it was just a normal evening. However, there are several interesting plaques to read so you can walk and stretch your legs. Gonna spend the night and then mosey down the highway tomorrow to Big Bend.
Debbie Drives and Travels — Google review
We didn’t see any lights but that’s ok. We had a great time viewing the awesome sunset and star gazing. We went twice while we were in the area. The restrooms were clean. Viewing platform was nice.
Monica Williams — Google review
Cool little place to stop and walk around after driving a long ways. Neat little piece of history as well. We stopped during daylight hours, even though we were unable to view the lights as they are best seen at night I really enjoyed taking the time to get out and read the little monuments. It has a couple of picnic tables if you’re in need of a place to eat bite or rest your legs. Has several restroom stalls for both men and women with vault toilets, all had plenty of toilet paper and hand sanitizer dispensers. Looks like it is well maintained. Parking lot has plenty of room to park your motor home or travel trailer. If you’re ever in the area and drive by you definitely need to stop and at least read a little about the history in the area!

An unusually charming subject of Texas lore - Oh sure this state is known for its tall tales about Jackalopes and lassoing twisters but magical / mystical lights possibly from space aliens seems a bit of a stretch. It doesn’t matter because unlike a Jackalope - you can actually find the Marfa Lights of Texas, and the kind people of Texas have even set up a Viewing Area for you - free of cost. Just off the roadway you’ll have a chance to pull over and investigate this local phenomenon for yourself. You decide. Are the lights merely a reflection of motor vehicle headlights? Well no so fast ‘cause these lights were first reported in the 1880’s not the 1980’s so it can’t be a motor car. Could the lights be swamp gas, maybe but there’s no swamp out there. St. Elmo’s Fire? Possibly but local Apache’s claim it’s no saint but rather a long dead Apache Chief searching for lost tribesmen. Come on out and have a look see! Be advised you’ll be in company of some opinionated and passionate people. My son and I were standing near the binoculars mounted to the viewing area and a group told us we shouldn’t be standing there because we blocked their view. Now we were standing where the architects wanted us to stand - but go figure. My biggest complaint is that the Marfa Lights Viewing Area is much too close to the main road. Motorists pass by slowly and create both sound and light corruption of the area. I also think that the viewing area platform might benefit from a second elevated floor. Come on out, you decide.
Sinjin — Google review
It's an interesting area, lots of history, a nice structure with bathrooms and binoculars to help you hone in on the lights. I was there during the day and didn't see any lights. Maybe on another trip I will be here at night... i appreciate they have built a nice monument to the phenomenon.
Trypp Adams — Google review
Went here back in January 2023 with family to view the Marfa Lights while we were visiting the McDonald Observatory for a star party. It was an awesome experience, but a very cold night!! We saw the lights from the binoculars they have at the place and it was spooky on how the lights were moving in different directions and getting dimmer and brighter in unpredictable patterns, who knows what could be causing these lights and how they do those things, could it be UFOs, ghost lights, atmospheric causes, cars passing by the highway, or something else?!! The Marfa Lights are a great stop that you must definitely do if you pass by the area either by going to Big Bend National Park or visiting the McDonald Observatory like we did or even stop by here if your going on a road trip somewhere else!! It’s worth it!!!
Big Bend Brewing Co. is a must-visit in West Texas, offering a great selection of beers and a welcoming atmosphere. The brewery provides an excellent place to relax with indoor and outdoor seating options, making it perfect for enjoying a flight or pint while taking in the stunning views. While they don't serve food, visitors are welcome to bring their own, and the brewery is kid and dog-friendly. Located near Alpine, it's an ideal stop for anyone exploring the area around Big Bend National Park.
So many tasty beers that I can't get back here in San Antonio. I took my time and enjoyed them.
The bartender was very friendly and welcoming, certainly helped turn around what had been a rough weekend. And of course the scenery was beautiful. Well worth the detour coming home from El Paso.
Joshua Carter — Google review
Great brewery! Very good selection of beers and also a great place to hang out. The views are great and they have several picnic tables inside and out to hangout and enjoy a flight or a pint. I really liked the gold pale ale. They don't serve food but you can bring some if you want. They're also kid and dog friendly which is nice. Definitely a place worth visiting if you're in Apline!

Must stop anytime we find ourselves in West Texas, going to Big Bend. Good beers, nice place...though it is a warehouse so hot in the summer and COLD in the winter. Alpine is close by as is Maria and all it’s cool weirdness. Don’t bypass Alpine though, it is bigger than you think and has a lot of personality!
Ki Ra — Google review
Great craft brews! Friendly staff and peaceful atmosphere in Alpine, Texas! One of the best breweries in Texas.
Marco Ortega — Google review
This is the best brewery you'll find in the area, and that's not a problem. Friendly bartenders help suggest the best brew for your taste. There's no food on site, but you can bring outside food in. It's a perfect way to get back to the world after camping and hiking in Big Bend.
Jim Lepick — Google review
In the Texas heat the last thing you expect on the side of the road is a cold, fresh brewed beer... But Big Bend Brewing definitely delivers. The La Frontera is an amazing ipa that quenches the thirst and gives just the right amount of crisp afterbite of hops. The staff is friendly, knowledge and good at finding the right beer for you. Would definitely recommend coming in on a hot summer afternoon with family, friends, or the significant other.
Erin Pazos — Google review
Beer was great, though the gal behind the counter needed some coaxing to even tell us about the brews, would have liked more background about the process and facility.
Christian Smedberg — Google review
Friendly staff... great porter. Games to play at the big tables. Dog friendly. Open space (a little windy when we were there!)
The Museum of the Big Bend, located on North Harrison Street in Alpine, offers a deep dive into the rich history of the Big Bend Region. The museum showcases the human history of the area, from Native American inhabitants to Spanish missionaries, Mexican influences, and American pioneers during westward expansion. Visitors can explore well-curated displays, artifacts, and vintage items that vividly depict the city's history.
Great clean museum with lots of Big Bend history as far back as prehistoric times. It's like stepping into a timeline. Lots of beautiful artwork too. A must see in Alpine Texas.
jason's_tx_adventures — Google review
The place had neat little exhibits, it was a cool little run through of the history of the big benfld area. It was rather small though. The two extra exhibits were okay.
Tookerys — Google review
Came to visit the area in a February and wound up spending some time in this museum. Enjoyed the free visit. Not a huge place, but definitely full of information and insights of the college and surrounding area. The full life-sized flying dinosaur (sorry, can't spell it!) was very impressive as was the fossilized bones of just ONE enormous wing. The usual cowboy, frontier, and old-time exhibits were also around to be enjoyed and to learn. Definitely a fun & interesting place to spend the time and if I had young kids it would be a MUST see spot.

It’s really small but good to learn about Big Bend history. We spend hardly one hour. Staff was really friendly.

Highly recommend to stop by if you happen to be in Alpine. Museum has a lot of unique pieces and cool scenes. What is also really nice is that they have interactive stands with short videos, that provide information about the exhibition.

What an amazing experience! I had no idea that Hoss Cartwrite graduated from Sul Ross University. Everything in the museum (from the paintings to the exhibits and maps) tells a gorgeous and impressive story of the Big Bend region. It's a must visit location!

Great little museum on the Sul Ross campus. Very friendly staff and great gift store. The museum gives a nice history of the Big Bend area from the dinosaurs to now. Beautiful art and map rooms as well. Well worth the stop!

This is a great little museum located on the campus of Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas. It tells the story of the Big Bend region and those who first came here from Europe. There are some great prehistoric artifacts and beautiful artwork from local region artists. The maps, located in the basement employee area, though few in number, were also very interesting. Enjoy the photos.
Howard Kagan — Google review
Great small town feel museum. Learned a good deal more about the area and Texas. I especially enjoyed the art exhibits.

We were at the museum for over 3 hours. It’s an amazing place to visit in Alpine. Information on Big Bend region of Texas, historic maps of Texas, gift shop, all on the campus of Sul Ross.

This is a wonderful small museum that will give you an overview of the Big Bend area's cultural and natural history. They had a recent expansion to accommodate more art exhbits, and we had the pleasure to view a retrospective of Graciela Inturbide's stunning photographs.

This place was small, but packed with information. It’s expanding on march as well. The best part was the nice front desk lady. If you’re looking for a nice history lesson, this is a good spot.

Nice, small museum. The new addition is art work but still very nice.
My grandchildren enjoy going there also.
Cheshire Cat Antiques is a small but treasure-filled store located in E Ave East. It offers a wide range of furniture and souvenir items at affordable prices, making it a one-stop-shop for vintage finds. Visitors praise the warm welcome from Russ and his mother, who are knowledgeable about every piece in the store. The shop is described as a hidden gem that sets the perfect tone for any trip to Alpine, leaving visitors with a renewed appreciation for all things vintage.
These guys are amazing and wonderful to talk with while browsing the museum-like shop they've cultivated. Tons of Texas and other awesome artifacts found here! We will treasure our western wear and souvenirs. Worth a visit everytime... PS - there are real cheshire cats too!
Vanna M — Google review
Best antique store in the West. Russ who owns the place, wrote his dissertation in Texas spurs. His knowledge is deep and he shares it generously. He is also generous with his dragons horde of rocks, gems and skulls. He went out back to find me the perfect rams skull in the condition and price range that I was looking for. Then he offered my kids free geodes on our way out. After spending the week exploring far West Texas, including Big Bend National park, Russ and Cheshire Cat Antiques is what my kids talked about the most. And yes there are plenty of of cats to pet on the front porch.
Robin Swindle — Google review
The owner was so nice and accommodating. When I told him I was buying amethyst crystals to take home for my grand children, he gave me two geodes for them to crack! They were so excited to open their "magic rocks "
Trisha Love — Google review
Hands down the best antique shop I've ever been to! Has a little bit of everything but their rock and mineral collection is the most impressive I've ever seen. Definitely not your typical little old lady antique place!
Casey Heath — Google review
We had a great time shopping here today! They have great antiques, but we stayed around for the rock collection! It was incredible and the prices were great! The owner went above and beyond talking to us about all the rocks and just gave great service! Will definitely come back any Rome we are in the area!

Can't say enough good things about this place— it is a MUST SEE if you're anywhere near Alpine, TX. The guys are so helpful, and let me try every little thing on! They are SO knowledgeable. Do yourself a favor and ask them about what you're curious about, because I guarantee it will have a cool story behind it.

Cheshire Cat Antiques was my very first stop in Alpine, and I couldn't be more happy that it was. It set the perfect tone for the rest of the trip. Definitely a must stop! Russ and his mother are so welcoming & make you feel like one of their own. All treasures are fairly priced. Russ was very knowledgeable about every piece in there. You left with a renewed appreciation and sense for all things vintage. A true hidden gem all must experience for themselves~
Gage Gardens are worth going to. We parked our large RV on the highway near the train yard and walked through the yard with our dog to the park. They have large open spaces where kids and pets alike can run around. There is a very large off leash area in the back with a walking path around it. There are areas to stop and rest while admiring the gardens. There is a very large rose garden which I'm sure is spectacular when in full bloom. There are a couple of water features and even a putting green. Go and relax in their gardens.
Eric L — Google review
Beautiful little garden with nice walking paths and a wide variety of shrubs and trees, many of which are marked for easy identification. Fountains, ponds, and putting green. A good break to let the kids play a bit or stretch your legs taking a break from a drive or a hike. Restroom as well if you need them. Sweet little spot to picnic, too.
Dan Gilkison — Google review
An absolute oasis in the heat of summer and gorgeous! Very relaxing to walk through and enjoy the beauty here. A lot of picture opportunities that just don't do this place justice. A lot of care goes into the place and it is obvious. Definitely a place to see.
Christie Tatum Janszen — Google review
Gardens are owned by gage hotel, but are open and free to public. Front few acres are manicured: rose garden, fountains, wedding venue, native xeriscaping, duck pond, etc. Back 20 acres are a jogging trail/dog walk/exercise loop in a mostly undeveloped pasture.

What is better than a Victorian garden in the Texas desert? Not much!

Went here with family. The well kept regional plants were very cool to look at and on top of that, the wildlife in the gardens was nice to see. I enjoyed sitting down and taking in the scenery.

Beautiful park in the small town of Marathon! Tons of gorgeous birds for the birders to visit. It's a must! There are two ponds. One in the main part of the park to sit around. The other is one the trail and that one allows dogs to swim in. This is a dog friendly park too, they allow them to be off leash. And a beautiful rose garden as well! Such a great surprise in our stay at Marathon.

Absolutely gorgeous place. Would advise caution depending on when you go, there were a lot of wasps out on the trails today (and the back end of a small rabbit lying on the trail. Managed to keep the kids far from it). I will admit, they have the nicest grass I've seen since alaska

We were there are a warm summer morning... Folks were out there pruning the roses. It was a nice start to the day, where we could glimpse some of the desert floura before heading down into Big Bend.
Big bend is one beautiful place should be on everyone's list to see but beware Thanksgiving is to busy for me

This was our 3rd time there. A very fantastic place to visit. Each time we discovered new things. I suggest walking into the cavern and taking the elevator up and out. The lower food court was closed, but no problem. Wear a jacket and bring a bottle of water.

Not open in summer, this visitor's center has a small store and museum displays for visitors. Volunteer inside was very informative and helpful. An outside exhibit with a picnic table and a clean bathroom are available.

Visitor center is ok. A pit toilet that is in good shape is there. The visitor center itself has limited souvenirs.

A small but well-done secondary visitor center. There is plenty of information about preparing to hike in the desert 🏜.

Nice center at the north entrance. Particularly interesting was the exposed warrant of a person who collected stuff in the NP and went to jail for it 😅

This visitor center was closed for the summer when we visited in September 2021, and so were the visitor centers at Rio Grande Village and Castolon. Only Panther Junction and Chisos Basin were open in the summer. There were some informational signs outside and a nice shaded picnic table where we had lunch.

Smallest visitor center in Big Bend but cute and quiet. They’re closed for lunch from 12:30 to 1:30.

Persimmon Gap Visitor Center is Closed! Only a gate employee. Need to go to the main location to get back country camping permit. $25 buck per motorcycle or car at gate. Great park but wish this was open. Was told closed indefinitely.
Really cool spot. Quick hike, worth the effort, usually not crowded

Did this hike in early January 2021, there was snow on the ground and it was sunny and cold. Hike is pretty short, but I can imagine that you wouldn't want to make the trek in the spring or summer. Canyon is nice, for the small amount of effort to get there i would say it was a decent payoff. We saw a deer on our way there, and saw some nice mountain lion prints in the snow in the canyon.

I'll never travel to Big Bend National Park without this trip planner again
Too many visitors to Big Bend Ranch State Park skip the opportunity to walk through the Environmental Education Center located just behind the Barton Warnock Visitor Center. ⚠️ BIG MISTAKE!
If you have any interest at all in the distinctive flora (especially 🌵 cacti) of West Texas and the wider Chihuahua Desert — and who doesn't? — then you will surely enjoy a relaxed stroll through the carefully planted, clearly labelled, and well-maintained walkways and hillock behind the Center, where you can view close up a tremendous variety of local cactus, shrubbery, small trees and other plant life endemic to the whole region — all gathered together in this one compact, xeriscaped display.
Some of the less common plants displayed here you may otherwise never run across in an initial or even later visit to Big Bend — so see (and photograph) them here. Learn a few of their names so you can impress your friends when hiking through the parks.
Offering good views of the Lajitas area, the eastern end of the state park, and the adjacent Mexico border region, you may well fine yourself wanting to spend at least a couple hours here.

This is a must stop for all those driving through. Unbelievable gift shop with a great selection of regional goods as well as interesting and informative theme items for the area. So much fun! Its a great stop - bathrooms, picnic and walk through their indoor museum. They also have a small garden with a lot of the natural fauna displayed. With little ones I really appreciate the amenities and all the goodies to look over.

Entrance to BBR State Park is exceptionality beautiful and informative. The displays explaining the history of the area are the best I've seen in any stays or national park. The staff was very knowledgeable and patient with our many questions. Overall, a great experience.
My family visited Lajitas resort over Memorial Day weekend and had a great experience at the entire resort. The zip line tour was an added bonus that made the stay especially memorable. My sister and I did the Quicksilver which was 100% worth it! The entire tour took around 2 hours which includes the trek up to the mountains, but the guides, Lloyd and Josh were very friendly and made the experience safe and enjoyable. The views from the top are amazing, I would highly recommend to anyone that visits the resort that likes exhilarating experiences to check this one out!

We did the Quick Silver tour over Christmas. Was every bit as exciting and entertaining as we imagined! The staff were incredibly gracious and hospitable. Even if you've never ziplined before, the Quick Silver tour is one you won't soon forget. We had so much fun that the time zipped by, pun intended. If you're going to Big Bend National Park for a family vacation, do yourself and your loved ones a favor and DON'T MISS THIS!

My sister and I recently ziplined here to do the Quicksilver Tour and had Josh and Joey as our guides. I’ve ziplined in other places and haven’t ever received the kind of service and safety as they provided. I would highly recommend this and if you are able to special request them, they will take care of you. The ziplines were all great and long with beautiful views. You have the ability to rent a GoPro for only $20 and it is so worth it to capture your experience.

You MUST zip line with this crew. Our family, including my 11 year old son, zip lined the Clay Henry Tour. The first 2 jumps helped ease them into the bigger jumps that followed. We rented the Go Pros for their point-of-view, and it’s the best $20 you can spend for the memories. My son pretended to be a YouTuber, and our amazing guides, Christina and Adam, added amazing and hilarious commentary to go along with him. I can’t praise them enough!!!!

Had a great time with my fiancé, and they made sure everyone was enjoying the tour.I was always scared of heights, have been zip lining before to face my height fear but always leave with the same fear BUT this place helped me beat my fear. The view was gorgeous. Don’t worry about having to record with your phone because they also have go-pro you could rent for a very affordable price. Every single one of us left the tour with a big smile on our faces. Will definitely come back zip lining and would recommend anyone to come here.

Great area for flying! Came down to spend some time in Big Bend and meet Marcos. He took us for a flight tour and I was impressed with how vast this area is! It’s gorgeous from the air and allows you to see things you may not otherwise get to see. Marcos was a great pilot and tour guide. I highly reccomend this company!

Our first time in a tiny plane and we were not disappointed! Marcos was great! We had to push back our flight time and he was very accommodating (we lucked out with good evening weather). The views are spectacular. Such a cool way to get a different perspective on Big Bend. Marcos is very knowledgeable about the area, it’s history, and the local politics. Highly recommend this tour!
Brandi Taylor — Google review
Did a 1.5 hour tour with Marcos. Great guide, showed us all the sites of the state-park and national. Amazing to see this area from the sky. He knew lots about geology, the history, and the park itself (being a former Park ranger).
In the future, you probably only need 1 hour MAX, not 1.5 hr. Price is reasonable for the amount of time in the air.
Om J — Google review
My wife and I just took a 90 minute flight with Marcos over both parks and the Devil's playground.
It was truly amazing scenery. Flying over such a vast space is really the only way to get a true perspective of the entire landscape. Marcos was a superb and knowledgeable pilot and guide. He also took a range of Covid measures: masks, temperature checks etc.

My husband and I took a one hour tour. It was a great time well worth the money our pilot/owner was very knowledgeable and friendly. My husband forgot his sunglasses in the plane and he was able to find them for him. Fantastic scenery a must do if you're in the area.

This was the #1 thing we where looking for on our Big Bend trip and he canceled last minute and blamed Covid. I literally called him and asked if everything was still on 2 weeks before the flight and he said yes Covid isn't shutting much down here and guaranteed me he would be open. But 5 days before the flight he claimed he had "a new policy" and was very short and fast to get off the phone. He could of cared less.
*If another pilot is reading this you could make a fortune by doing flight tours in Big Bend because he knows he is the only one in town and his service sucks.
Mark Halfmann — Google review
One of the most unique experiences in the Big Bend. You can even fly over THE big bend where the Rio turns northeast and forms what is one of the most notable features of the Texas border. Prices vary by season, but worth the cost. Breathtaking mile high views of some of the most interesting terrain on the planet. Pro tip: Ask Pilot Marcos Paredes to tell you some stories about his experience as a BBNP Ranger for many years, or ask Pilot Alex Whitmore to sing you his Terlingua song "79852"

This is a must do experience. He’s very knowledgeable about the area and will take you over the best parts (even Big Bend National and State Park!) This was definitely one of the best parts of our trip!
Far Flung Outdoor Center is one of the three major outfitters in the area, offering guided trips at an average cost of $90 per person per day. They are known for their creative special trips that focus on food, photography, survival training, and music. The company provides rafts for half-day floats and offers unique experiences such as floats with troubadours Steve Fromholz, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and Butch Hancock.
Far Flung is a top tier outfitter. We opted for a half-day kayak trip on the Rio Grande and had a great experience. Cody was a great guide and made sure everyone had a good laugh while also feeling safe.
We went during dry season, so it was a very leisurely trip. There were a couple of spots where the boats dragged, but it was still a fun experience - especially since you’re teetering the Mexican-American border the entire trip.

Minutes from Big Bend. For most part quiet, with some highway traffic now and then. Nice little gift shop...shirts, hats, decals, etc. Lots to pick from. Also offers tours (Jeep and river). Will definitely be back on next trip to Big Bend!

We had an amazing time on the half day trip. We went on the first run in Big Bend NP as their usual route was very shallow. It was nothing short of amazing. The guides were so incredibly knowledgeable and super friendly. You could tell they deeply love Big Bend and love sharing their knowledge. They would get just as excited about seeing things as the guests. Truly made for an amazing experience.

We booked the Round the Bend Jeep tour with Far Flung and it was FANTASTIC!! It was our first day in the area and we learned so much about the park from our guides, Jenn and Jeremy. They were full of knowledge, but just as important, they were super fun!! The vehicles are comfortable and the cadence of driving and stopping is near perfect. A great picnic lunch was a welcomed break after a morning of touring. We will call on Far Flung the next time we are in the area and suggest that any of our friends do the same!

Probably our favorite, and definitely most relaxing day in Big Bend, was floating down the Rio Grande with Far Flung. We had the good fortune of being able to do our one-day float in Santa Elena Canyon last week due to favorable water levels. I've taken many tours at outfits around the world and our guide Jordan was one of the best I've ever had. She was fun, kind, and professional. Not a question was asked all day that she didn't have an answer to - from the area's flora and fauna to the history of the landscape. Her knowledge was only surpassed by her obvious love of the environment and her "office". Far Flung was a great organization to work with, even allowing us to use a 2 ½ year old voucher from when covid cancelled our 2020 trip. Would absolutely plan another excursion with these folks if we're ever in the area again.

We had a GREAT time on our canoe trip with Far Flung! It started as a chilly, dreary day, but the sun broke through and turned out beautiful. Our guides were knowledgeable and fun to be with. They provided an outstanding deli buffet lunch, with some of the best salsa I had ever tasted (and I know salsa). We have used Far Flung in the past, and they continue to exceed expectations, with fun and adventure!! Yep, I'd use 'em again, any day!!!

They are the best! We did a canoe trip with Brandon, who is a wealth of knowledge! He was so much fun telling us all sorts of local information (thanks Brandon). The river was low but he was very accommodating and we were the only two on that trip and they still took us out!

We had an amazing couple of days with the folks at Far Flung Outdoor! I had worked with Lexie on a custom Jeep tour leading up to our stay. She was super nice and helped with everything down to the T. Super responsive and friendly! When we checked in, it was with Bill the owner. He was super friendly and wanted to make sure your stay was enjoyable. Gave great direction about the property and info about the area. We met Chris later that afternoon that took us on our Jeep tour. We had a blast! He is a plethora of information and such a pleasure to chat with! We have been coming to the Big Bend area a couple times a year since 2018. It’s our 2nd home. I don’t know why it took us so long to stay here! This is by far the friendliest, most informative, and caring people you will meet that just want you to have a great time! This is what Terlingua is about! Staying here is a priority for us going forward along with our friends and family!

What a great experience! We went on a half day kayak trip down the Rio Grande. It was perfect weather and such a fun and relaxing trip. Even the inexperienced can do it and have a blast.
Far Flung made it easy. We met up at the Outdoor Center and followed the guides to the finish point where we dropped off our cars. We loaded up in their vans and drove to the starting point, got briefed on water safety and we’re properly fitted for our life jackets. We had four guides with us because we did have several canoes and kayaks on this trip. The guides are very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable giving cool information about the area along the trip down the river. We had a short stop the get a cold drink and a little snack which they provided then we got back on the river for the last half of the trip. There were several small rapids which were fun to ride down too.
I highly recommend Far Flug!! This is a must do.

First class staff, facilities and equipment. We stayed onsite at the Casitas, and wow, so nice.
Lucky to have the river level high enough, to use kayaks and the guide service. Very well organized and again, they have everything to make the kayaking experience awesome.
Read all the instructions the day before your trip, for great insight. I’d recommend bringing tight fitting water sandals or your oldest pair of throwaway tennis shoes, water bottle, bathing suit, quick drying shirt, hat, suntan lotion, waterproof phone case, and crew tip money in a plastic sandwich bag.
Thank you Adriana and all the staff from Far Flung.

We checked in this afternoon. We got in a little earlier but our room was done so we were able check in a little early. All of the staff have been incredibly friendly! The room space is large. Plenty of room for my husband and I. There is a microwave and mini fridge. We don’t plan on cooking but they have grills and an ice machine right outside. We spent some time out at the pool before heading to a hike. It’s a lovely atmosphere to relax! I would recommend to any friends coming out this way.

Great experience! We originally booked just a half day river trip. Water levels were low, so they took us to the hot springs canyon. Views were beautiful, and the hot springs were too! Our guides were super friendly and gave us a lot of recommendations on other things to see/do in Big Bend. Bill, who helped us out at the front counter, was also incredibly friendly and helpful. We had no idea the property had lodging and a pool until our guides mentioned it. After Bill showed us around the property we ended up booking a room for the night! He was very attentive and made sure we were set up with everything, and was an all around joy to chat with. The room was clean and comfortable, and the pool was a great escape from the heat during the afternoon. The property is only a 15min drive from the park, is very close to the gas station, and even has a little coffee shop out front. Would highly recommend Far Flung to friends/family and will def return next time we are in the area.

This resort is such a little gem tucked away in Big Bend! I have been recommending it to everyone. The cabins are roomy, super clean, well appointed and just perfect for the environment. They have an actual coffee shop that opens up at 7 AM with delicious pastries and coffee. Every evening there is a fire pit that runs for hours. There’s a pool & hot tub. The grounds are beautiful and the people are so friendly. It was absolutely perfect, the only thing wrong with our trip is we didn’t get to spend enough time in Big Bend so next time we will stay longer and we will definitely stay at the far-flung resort!!! They even have a great gift shop and I stocked up on cool tshirts and hats for Christmas presents for nearly everyone in my family! Amazing

Our group of 4 adults and 1 seven year old went on the half day guided canoe trip yesterday and it was Fantastic!! Not only did they lead us and follow up at the end of the group to assist in the shallow waters they also educated us on the mountain terrain history and plants and shared in a lot of laughs. It was all women who gave us the tour and loaded up the boats and gear and we were thoroughly impressed with their teamwork and knowledge and muscles 💪 Girls Rocked that trip and we all made lasting vacation memories that they will be part of. Can’t wait to go for an all day trip in a few months! Thank you, Olivia, Hanah, Anna, and Caroline you all did a magnificent job!

We didn't compare outfitter services, but I cannot imagine anyone being better. The guides are passionate about what they do and communicate extremely well. When I called to get advice on activities to book, Bill helped me walk through all the options. No rush. He seemed genuinely happy to help. Our river float and jeep tour themselves are two of the best excursions my family has ever done, and we've done some cool stuff on other trips. Facilities were very clean, and their merch was reasonably priced and cool. We learned a lot and had so much fun. I cannot recommend Far Flung enough.

Such a fun and memorable experience! We stayed at Lajitas and had done a trail ride at their resort stables earlier in the week but loved this one much more! The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating and the ride was much more scenic. The guides do a great job of pointing out interesting facts and tidbits along the way which we loved. This was my 7 year olds first time to ride, he loved it, and his horse Marty was perfect! We loved our guides Shelby and Haley and Deb was also so kind and helpful! We will definitely recommend to friends visiting Big Bend!

LOVE Big Bend Stables! Cannot recommend more highly. As an experienced rider who actually does not typically like trail rides, I enjoyed every minute of my sunset ride in Terlingua. The guides were great, the scenery was majestic, but the horses (and mules, like my sweet mount, Tank) were the best part. They're SO well taken care of and clearly all have jobs they enjoy. Each of these animals took such good care of their riders and while everyone else in the group was quite inexperienced, everyone voiced being comfortable and feeling safe. Very much a family friendly adventure too. Cannot wait to come back! Thanks Tank, you're a good boy!

Ella and Bart were our wranglers who first paired each of us in our group of nine to a gentle horse befitting our experience/size. They then guided us along well worn desert trails down into rocky dry creek beds and up rather steep inclines. The whole experience was a little scary for someone (me) with almost no experience but it was so fun. And the views were spectacular.

Great hospitality! Thanks for a wonderful morning ride, Miss Ella! Really good experience for the kids. Even though it was a trail ride that the horses do everyday, the horses were NOT on autopilot, and you definitely still had to ride them. You can bring a carrots or apples for the horses but I would recommend trying to give it before you go out because they go straight to water after the ride. We did the sunset ride and it was the perfect balance of structure and adventure. The guides were very knowledgable about the land and in general just fun to talk to. They gave us tips for the rest of our trip that was really helpful. You could tell they loved what they did and they loved the horses. I’ve done a lot of horseback tours in different countries and this one was my favorite by far.

we took a sunset ride on 3/9 with Dani!
it was my first time on a horse and i felt at ease. it was an unforgettable experience. i rode geronimo who was an older guy but a good follower, i think the staff paired us up perfectly. Dani was the best, she was informative about the area and great to chat with. i can’t wait to come back in the future. thank you for the great experience geronimo, indio & chipotle!

What a great experience. Evo was the best guide we could hope for. The horses were calm, well behaved trail horses. My 9yr old and 11yr old kids had no trouble with their horses. I'm about 240lbs, so they put me on an all white horse named Shrek. He was great. He Followed my commands as if I rode him every day. The scenery was level 11, and Evo prepared a lunch of Smoked Chicken and Cowboy Caviar. If you are considering a family horse ride in Big Bend, I highly recommend this stable.

My fiance and I took the sunset ride, and it was wonderful! Our guide was great, and very knowledgeable about the area we were riding in, and the local plants. The experience was great!

Evo was great at showing us the ropes (literally). We did the 2 hour tour up mesas and down into creekbeds. The landscape is beautiful here. Horses were very easy going and comfortable. They are very well kept and happy. They definitely knew what they were doing with new riders. Recommend a lot!

This was an awesome horse ride and during the most beautiful sunset!! These horses are so well trained, for the most part, they don't even need a rider to guide them. 😉 I haven't ridden a horse in years, so this was a phenomenal and enjoyable experience. Our tour guide (so sorry i forgot your name) was very helpful, entertaining, and observant for everyone's safety throughout the tour!.....only "raw" point, my butt was extremely sore for days after😆

What an experience! Definitely an adventure to remember for a lifetime. Be sure to bring lots of water, wear sunscreen, long sleeves, long jeans (no shorts), and closed toed shoes. Our guide, Evo, was 5-stars!
Store name accurately reflects what is in the store, there are indeed many stones here.
In addition to stones, there are some interesting items such as knives, plants, and an interesting book about some stores originating out of Terlingua. Worth checking out, owner is very nice.

We have made three trips to Big Bend this past year, stopping by to see Ring, the owner of Many Stones is always a part of our itinerary. He has a great place with lots of cool rocks, handmade jewelry, made by Ring and cacti for sale. We love to shop here and visit Ring. He always has cool stories to tell. Stop by and say hello, cash only.

A fantastic rock shop, and Ring is a treasure. Lots of good local finds here - tumbling rough, display specimens, and native desert plants. Bring cash.

most wonderful shop with the most wonderful owner. thank you, Ring!
Justina Lukoševičiūtė — Google review
There for sure were many stones. The stones were great -- just a heads up you need cash because cards aren't accepted. There were some odd political signs, including a quote from Hitler and a Confederate flag.

Nice shop. Rocks and some cute plants. Nice outdoor open air section for shopping. More stones inside that I did not go in to look at, but plenty outside for me to find a few things to purchase. Nice shop. Would recommend if in the area!

This place is pretty cool, lots of different stones and plants and some trinkets here and there as well. Hubby bought 4 different rocks and he loves them, very unique.

Awesome rock shop with great prices.
Very nice yet quirky owner. Honor system if he is not open. Slide your money under the door. Must stop if you are in Terlingua and interested in rocks or plants. Wish I lived closer.

Located in Big Bend National Park, Santa Elena Canyon is a popular destination for nature lovers. The area offers stunning views of 1,500-ft cliffs along the Rio Grande and provides an excellent spot for canoeing. To reach the canyon, visitors must take Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive which offers several overlooks and trails along the way. The water front is easily accessible with public parking spaces located about 100ft from the shore area.
It is majestic! The trail is short and easy. Walking into the river will find different scenery.

Hike is beautiful with the 1500 foot limestone forming the canyon. It's pretty easy, but the switchbacks can tire you out. Didn't get to go all the way to the end because of how high the water was the day we went and we weren't prepared for that.
Nomad Life — Google review
Short, easy trail for the family, as long as everyone is good with steps and moderate inclines. Had to hold my kids’ hands for the section of the trail with steep drop-offs, but otherwise it was kid-friendly, with gorgeous views along the river and large boulders in the cavern the kids enjoyed scrambling up. Bring a light jacket in winter as the temp drops in the cavern when you’re out of the sun.
Abby Crotinger — Google review
Fairly easy hike. River crossing can be tricky if the water is high. Can be very muddy. Well worth the visit if you’re going to Big Bend.
Joe Yoo — Google review
Ease of access to the water front, there is public parking spaces about 100ft from the shore area, saw lots of people posted up with chairs by the water reading, if you are attempting to reach the trail expect to walk through some water to get to the head of it. The trail starts with a steep climb after the water but is relatively flat after that along the side of the canyon

One of the best canyons I've ever been into. It's both beautiful and massive, and the drive there is a scenic as it gets.

Busy trail, but worth it. A fairly easy hike except for the switchbacks. The sheer size of the canyon walls definitely do not translate in pictures. A great place to get some shade and cool off in the water during the summer months.

Broke free from work to come check this one off my list. I didn’t know I’d love big bend as much as I did.
Not much for services at this location as it’s remote but an awesome landscape and beautiful yet short hike.

This is a short hike with a spectacular view at the end. It is not a difficult hike and there are lovely views along the way. However when you get to the end of the trail, The views of the canyon are stunning! They are all some areas at the start of the hike which are a little steep.

Couldn’t wait to check Santa Elena canyon in person. Love canyons and had seen so many pictures of it. It was on top of my “must visit list” of this trip to Big Bend. It’s a long drive in a beautiful scenic road to get there. We parked and used the restroom, before heading to the trail head. There was a lot of traffic since was late morning. Very beautiful views and a unique experience on the Texas border.

Had an awesome experience. Went during the thanksgiving week. There is an entrance fee of 30$ for car and 15$ for bike for entering in the Big Bend national park. The ticket is valid for 7 days. Since big bend park is so big it will probably take 7 days and more to fully cover it. Santa Elena canyon is a part of it.We took the Maverick's drive to reach the canyon. There is no proper road but a gravel path it's not good for the car but it is good for the nature and the picturesque surrounding area. So one advice don't take low ground clearance car. Once you have reached the canyon you have to hike ahead so as to reach in the canyon. The hike is pretty easy. The difficult part is to reach the trail. When we went the path to canyon trail was flooded in the night. The water had receded but it was quite difficult to get on the other side. Other wise an awesome view and an amazing place. Many people were kayaking through the river and were taking there camping gear on further ahead through the canyon. They were probably going to camp at the canyons other end. It's very beautiful out there.

Good place to visit, hike and kayak. We can cross river by walk. Depth is around 2-3 ft when we visited. One side is USA and other side of the river is Mexico.
Half day and full day River tours are available. Plan ahead.

The BEST place in Big Bend! We had to wade through part of the river to be able to enter the canyon. The water was warm and thigh deep, so it was more fun than difficult. The walk to the river itself is simple, and I even saw people in wheelchairs coming down the trail

This is likely the most impressive sights in Big Bend National Park, up to 1000-foot-high vertical cliffs, there are not too many places like that in the rest of the US. The trail is less than a mile long and the views are gorgeous. You may have to cross a small muddy stream to get to the cliffs depending on the time of the year. These massive limestone cliffs are the sedimentary remains of an ancient shallow sea, and they were carved by the Rio Grande over the last 60 million years (they call it Rio Bravo in Mexico).
Window Trail is a scenic hiking path situated within the confines of Big Bend National Park. The trail features intermittent cascading waterfalls and jagged rock formations that are only visible during certain times of the year. This outdoor trek is an ideal choice for those who want to experience nature's beauty up close while traversing along rustic terrain. Window Trail boasts breathtaking views, providing hikers with an unforgettable journey amidst stunning surroundings.
The view is totally different, if you just see the window overlook view is not enough

Nice hike, be aware this is a hike where you hike down into it and the return is uphill. Very nice hike, though suggest to do it the morning like most hikes in Big Bend.

Strenuous hike. Wear tough, closed-toe shoes. This ain’t no trail fit for flip flops or sandals! Temperatures during the hot seasons (so basically March through October) can become dangerously high, so choose your hike schedule carefully. Bring tweezers and other first aid...nearly every plant along the trail has some type of stabby stabby needles, spines, or thorn clusters. But all warnings aside, this trail is possibly the crown jewel of the park. Spectacular views of the valley below, and the hike down to the window offers hundreds of beautiful scenic views.
Sheisster1313 ! — Google review
Bring enough water, but an amazing trail. Views are great at the end of the trail and it is an extremely fun and beautiful hike.
Sam Clark — Google review
amazing end to this trail. It does seem repetitive at first. But well worth the journey! The last half mile is a lot of cool stuff. I went before sunset and ended up being the only one on the trail... guess no one else wanted to walk back in complete blackness(a bit scary when by yourself)... be sure to bring a head lamp if you plan on doing this. Thankfully got to the end before the sun got too low(see photos). I wish I left maybe 30 minutes earlier though to enjoy the end more.

Google maps will get you to the right general area but will try to get you to the trailhead. There is no parking at the trailhead. When you turn onto the campground, follow the signs for hiker parking. The parking lot is about a 2-minute walk through the campground to get to the trailhead. It is a little difficult because there is no set path to get to the trailhead.
This is a downhill hike. It's a beautiful walk with great views of the mountains, and there are lots of plants, insects and birds to see along the way. The hike back is an uphill hike, but it is a gentle upward slope.
The bathrooms at the trailhead are very clean.
N Maharaj — Google review
Out and back. The out is easier than the back, so just be aware if not in decent shape. To get all the way to the window may require some slight improvising toward the end. A few options for parking spots so just double check all your options for best available.

A beautiful and moderate hiking trail in Big Bend national park. The view and sceneries along the trails are amazing. There are several Rock formations and the terrain changes along the way. It's not that difficult trail . It's about 6 miles Round-trip. The terrain have several elevation changes. I recommend to bring a lot of water and get a hiking poles since it gets hot and there's several steep and rocky areas of the trails. At the end of the trail the view is amazing and all worthwhile..

I'll never travel to Big Bend National Park without this trip planner again
The Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park offer a range of hiking trails and diverse wildlife, including various bird species and ants. One popular route is the Lost Mine Trail, which offers stunning views from the mountain summit. The Window Trail also provides scenic sights but requires a moderate level of endurance due to its constant incline. It's recommended to bring water on all hikes and for those who prefer an easier trail before attempting Emory Peak, Lost Mine is a good starting point.
It’s an awesome drive, beautiful Mountains rough dessert terrain cool weather 80 degrees when in San Antonio it was 101

We hiked the Lost Mine and the Window Trail! Together on the same day, it was quite difficult. For the Lost Mine, it was straight up the mountain on the way up. For the Window, it was inclined the whole way back. So lots of elevation change as a warning. I am so glad we got to see the views from both! The views from the top of the mountain at Lost Mine is GORGEOUS! I see why it’s the most popular trail.

One of the best hikes you can go in the big bend. The view was breathtaking. I rate this route as easy to moderate due to it contains some sudden climbs. All ways don’t forget your water bottle. If you are not confident of trying the Emory peak from the first try may be it’s better to try this one first

The Lost Mine Trail is a challenging mountain hiking route that spans almost 5 miles and has an elevation gain of more than 1,000 feet. It offers stunning views of the canyon scenery along the way and is well-suited for experienced hikers. The trail provides an opportunity to experience the natural beauty of the area while enjoying a good workout in the great outdoors.
Good to do this trail in the morning so you have more time to sight seeing and take pictures and pace yourself for the 2.4 miles (4.8miles round trip) hike.
Impt: before starting the trail, do give a read of all the precautions and safety aspects pertaining to this hike as there are bears and mountain lions. Picnic is definitely a “no no” as it lures the wild. Park rangers also post on signage that the food in the car has to be securely packed, window closed and etc to prevent wildlife like bears and mountain lions from approaching public and vehicles. So do have a good breakfast before starting the hike.
There are wild Mexican jay, whitetail deers roaming around the trail. This trail can be a moderate or strenuous hike, probably it’s the last 10-15 mins to the peak for worthy scenic views might be challenging to first time hiker. The last 1 mile to the trail peak is cold and windy in Spring, so any unsecured cap or hat may be blown off. There is no toilets along this trail. Human waste must be buried 6’ deep, at least 100 yards from the trail or any water source / drainage. So pack out your toilet papers. Overall is a satisfying scenic trail to hike 😊.

5 miles, 1100 feet of elevation gain, a short hike of 3 hours total with beautiful views at the top. Somewhat busy as it is very approachable, show up early to get a parking spot, I overnighted in the park for early access.

This is a great hike in Big Bend National Park. The trail is labeled as moderate but I would label it moderate to strenuous. The last 1/2 mile or so of the trail is pretty steep with switchbacks. That part was strenuous. But the view up top is worth it! The trail was around 8 miles out and back. The trail has beautiful views with every turn. Arrive early (like before 8:00) to get a parking spot in the morning and hike when it isn’t as hot. There are spots available in the afternoon but I don’t imagine hiking this when it is hot would be as enjoyable.

Gorgeous hike! Don't stop at the Vista one mile up, it takes a while but at the top the trail crests the ridge with a view on both sides (most of the trail is up one side) and the hike ends at a stunning panoramic view. Up hill basically the whole way out, so come prepared for stairs. Show up early. We took the last parking spot at the trailhead at 0900

The hike was challenging in a few areas, so a moderate difficulty level is apt for the description of the trail. The views from the top of the trail are absolutely stunning! I can't wait to do this trail again in the future.

Came later in the day after 4pm and it was pretty empty. Wanted to beat the darkness so we hiked up in 1h 15mins, and back down in 1h 5min. Overall hike was pretty tiring going up. Bring plenty of water and take breaks! View was worth it and peaceful since we were alone. Didn’t see any bears or mountain lions! No bathrooms on-site. Only trash bins and storage if you accidentally bring food so bears don’t come by.
Emory Peak is a prominent summit in Texas, named after William H. Emory who led the U.S. Boundary Survey team in 1852. The area offers great opportunities for hiking and boasts spectacular trails, though caution must be exercised when hiking before dawn due to the presence of mountain lions and bears.
Hard Trial!!! Go with the proper planned with water and necessary costumes. Once you reach the peak it’s an awesome movie you feel like standing above all the big bend peaks. That feel is extraordinary.
Well worth it. Took us just under 8 hours including the hour plus we spent at the top. You definitely could do this in under 6 but we took it at a slow and steady pace.
The final half mile of the trail is very technical with lots of rocks to navigate. We had to stow our trekking poles and slowly work our way to the top.
Once at the top it took us a little to figure out what way to go to climb to the peak.
But going around the right (northern) side seemed the best way to go. We were able to climb at more of an angle instead of going straight up the center which was more of a vertical climb.
I was able to do it with my relatively large backpack. It definitely isn't for the faint of heart but the
"scramble" up was worth it. The hardest part was finding a way up.
Also it's the right (northern) peak not the left (southern) peak.
Poovalagan Jagadeeswaran — Google review
Excellent views, worth the moderate hike up.
Matthew Barnes — Google review
Where are we going? See the highest part of that mountain? That's where!
What an outstanding hike... but be prepared! Here's what you need to know.
#1. You're gonna travel about 11 miles
#2. The elevation gain is about 2500 feet
#3. It's a there and back trail so the elevation loss will be about 2500 feet
#4. It will take around 6 hours... give or take an hour
#5. To get to the peak can be confusing at the end... you will have to do a little climbing.
So yeah... be ready for an amazing and beautiful hike. It's a crazy journey that can be pretty challenging if you do not realize what you are getting into.
Water, food, and a way to protect yourself from the sun are super important things and trekking poles can be pretty helpful coming back down.
Be aware of your surroundings and keep the park clean!

This is definitely great place for hiking in Texas. The trail was spectacular. If you are hiking before dawn, watch out for mountain lions and bears. I waited for the sunrise after a group of hikers were coming back and warning me about those beasts. It took me about 8 hours drive from ATX. The reason for 4 star is, you can find way better places for hiking and camping in New Mexico if you are ready to drive that long. Been once, but I am not sure it will worth to visit another time.
servet oksuz — Google review
Challenging hike but accessible for the average hiker. From the beginning of the Pinnacles Trail to the peak and back it’s an 11-mile trek with around 6000’ elevation climb. Great views from the peak, but be prepared for the small rock scramble to the tip top, it’s not for the faint of heart.
Nate Saffle — Google review
Excellent hike and views. Quite strenuous, especially the last 50ft, which requires climbing steep boulders and rocks with sheer cliff edges close by. We completed Emory peak as part of a two day hike around the south rim. There are bear boxes and a composting toilet located 1.5 miles from the top which we utilized both;). Leaving our packs at the bear box and just bringing water/snack made the hike up to the peak much more enjoyable.
My 12 year old son and I went to the top, but use your own judgement since the last 50ft are very steep and require reaching and climbing, so much so that there were several adult males in other groups who chose not to climb it. This is an excellent hike with awestriking views even if you refrain from this last section. It truly gave us the opportunity to lift up our eyes and see who created these magnificent works of art!
Tim Anderson — Google review
Climbed here a few years ago before doing the outer mountain loop. Absolutely awesome and a great detour on our trip. At the fork in the trail where you would go up the mountain or continue on the loop there was a bear box for our packs. Which made climbing way better.
There is a little cave at the top as well, someone had casually taken a dump in it so that wasn’t cool but other than that it was pretty nice.
Definitely the best view you can get in the entire park, as long as you are in shape the climb to the peak was not bad, but there was a bit of a vertical climb. Climbing down was harder than climbing up but I didn’t not feel unsafe at any point.
BennyCriss12 — Google review
This is a 10 mile roundtrip hike with an elevation gain of 2500 feet. Not very difficult with beautiful views, this is the highest peak in Bid Bend National Park. The views of the basin are really beautiful, and since Big Bend National Park is virtually unknown , it makes for wonderful moments of solitude.

Spectacular if not moderately challenging hike. Switchbacks can be brutal and on a very sunny day, it hardly feels cooler than on the desert floor. Definitely worth the effort though, see Alltrails for detailed trail reviews and maps.

This hike is definitely worth doing if you don’t mind a little rock climbing. The bit at the very end (the last fifty feet or so) was a bit more advanced than we were comfortable with, but lots of folks were doing it and made it look easy. I wish we would have instead hiked to the South Rim so as not have had the experience of missing the summit by fifty feet.

Much better than expected. We visited the last week of 2019 and it was perfect weather. The hike is also very nice, the first few miles is fairly easy. The last mile or so is the hardest but its not that difficult overall. Views from any of the viewpoints are phenomenal. The crowds down at the visitor center and parking lot were larger than expected but the trail was fairly quiet. Highly recommend for anyone contemplating this place.
Sotol Vista Overlook is a must-visit spot in Big Bend National Park, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the western side of the park and Santa Elena Canyon in the distance. The overlook provides an almost 360-degree view, allowing visitors to see the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive winding through the Chisos mountain range. It's particularly popular for watching summer sunsets, and there's ample parking as well as a restroom facility.
I highly recommend stopping here. There are a lot of parking spaces but it is a busy stop. There are restrooms here. Take in all of the view, walk around and enjoy this time. You can see so much and it is all beautiful.

I have rode the South Rim Trail a few times. The most recent time, I took my children. For them to see the ' untouched by human' senic beauty was a thrill for me. The best part, it was a clear day. Since the South Rim is the place where you can see the most in the WESTERN HEMISPHERE, being clear weather is the most important factor. I have never hiked the trail. Most hike up on one day and return the next. I was amazed with all the animals who had no fear of us. Squirrels and birds are straight out of our hands. Big Bend National Park is delightful with its diversity of things to see and extremes in landscapes.
