Mandalay, a city in northern Myanmar, was once the royal capital and is located on the Irrawaddy River. The restored Mandalay Palace from the Konbaung Dynasty stands at its center, surrounded by a moat. Mandalay Hill offers panoramic views of the city and can be reached via a covered stairway. At its base lies the Kuthodaw Pagoda, home to hundreds of Buddhist-scripture-inscribed marble slabs.

Best stops along Chengdu to Bagan drive
The top stops along the way from Chengdu to Bagan (with short detours) are Old Town of Lijiang, Inle Lake, and Mandalay Hill. Other popular stops include Leshan Giant Buddha, Tiger Leaping Gorge, and Lugu Lake.
The Leshan Giant Buddha, constructed between 713 and 803, is a colossal stone carving of Buddha seated on a cliff. It is the largest and tallest statue of its kind in the world and can be found at Xijuo Peak overlooking where the Minjiang, Qingyi, and Dadu Rivers meet. One remarkable feature of this structure is its exceptional drainage system designed to protect it from erosion. Visitors are advised to take a boat ride to appreciate its historical significance fully.
Put this on your list! It's an amazing site, stunning example of stone carving. It's bigger than you expect! I recommend taking the boat tour, see it from the river, it's a great view. The boat landing is about a 6-7 minute walk from the park at the base of the approach to the statue on foot. the VIP boat tour was 170 RMB per adult (kids were free under 1.2 or 1.4m, can't recall exactly). We spent about 10 minutes on the river getting great views of the statue.

Leshan giant Lord Buddha is the tallest & longest stone buddha statue. Situated at the hillside of xijuo peak that looks the junction of the minijang, qulingyi and dadu rivers.. Never go here on holidays cause, I wait 4an half hour for ticket

You can easily do this on your own by taking the fast train from Chengdu Dong station, there is no real need of a guide or an agent that will charge you 5 times more than the actual admission and train fare. The view of the Buddha is limited to the cruise option only due to some renovation works of the right facade. There are still some option to walk up to the area of the Buddha’s head but they no longer allow you to take the steps down for a full view of the Buddha from the bottom, hence the best option is via the river cruise which is very affordable and the duration is for 30-40mins. There are also options for you to visit other Buddha statues within the same park but will require long walks or a ride on the tram which is optional at an additional cost.

Leshan Giant Buddha (樂山大佛), the world’s largest and tallest stone Buddha statue, is located in the hillside of Xijuo Peak that overlooks the junction of the Minjiang, Qingyi and Dadu Rivers.
The monumental structure was built 1200 years ago, the most interesting fact is Buddha has a unique and advanced drainage system that helps to preserve the statue from erosion.
Be sure to come here by boat and climb to experience the history and culture of Leshan Giant Buddha.
Never come here on consecutive holidays, because we have to queue for at least four hour to see the Buddha😭.

Insanely crowded on the way down to Buddha's foot. The views are great, weather is hot and make sure to bring drinks or else you risk being dehydrated.

Awe-inspiring Buddha statue. The Leshan Giant Buddha is a 71-metre tall stone statue, built between 713 and 803. You can climb the stairs on the right side up of the statue to reach the head level of the Buddha and descend from the stairs on the left. May be crowded, so be careful. Manageable for a person of average fitness

Absolutely amazing experience! It’s really worth climbing up to the head of the statue and then doing a boat trip to get a full frontal view. Stunning and very captivating!

This is the must go attraction for whoever visiting chengdu. The status was huge and very peaceful just by watching it. We hiked down to its foot to get its bottom up views. There are other temples also worth to visit.

Another greatness of China. To tell truth i am not a big fan but have admit that everything they do is to confirm the greatness. This place what i've always to come and definitely very impressive. Can either take cruise and watch the greatness from the river or you can climb along the Buddha. A MUST visit. Surrounding is also large with convenient amenities.

The giant Buddha is the main attraction but good luck getting a decent picture. There were people everywhere as usual as a national tourist trap like this one. If you are good with stairs you can walk all the way down to the bottom (about 24 floors high) and walk back up. I kindly declined the offer as my knees were already pretty swollen as this is the last day of our tour. As with most tourist areas, it is unfriendly to elderly and physically challenged individuals.

This Leshan Giant Budha statue was carved out from the face of a hill, similar to the Longmen Grottoes. Sitting at around 70+ meters, it is better to view from a ferry / river cruise. Sont forget also to visit the Eastern Budha Town. You will need a day if you wish to climb up the Leshan Budha.

- Great place to visit
- There are a lot of delicious tangerines along the road with reasonable prices, so big and so sweet. I highly recommend
Tuấn Nguyễn — Google review
I enter from the back of the area - 东方佛都景区, which was another conservation area with more temples and Buddha statues, including 卧佛,万佛词,地宫东区,米洞中坐佛和药师佛寺. Am glad I went on the tour with a proper guide and I'm happy ours was knowledgeable.
There's also no lack of tourist traps here, such as photos with the Giant Buddha head. A photo with the Buddha head should be taken from the right shoulder of the Buddha because the observation deck on the left is higher where you will then be 'above and looking down at Buddha' which is disrespectful.
There are 5 poses here where touching a different part of the Buddha's head signifies a different blessing (top of the head for a good career, top of the ear for good health, bottom of the ear for longevity, nose for wealth. Then eyebrows and facing the Buddha directly which I can't remember for what purpose already).
A pity I didn't get to see the whole Buddha from the leg as the path going down was closed due to falling stones resulting from heavy rain in Sep. And again a pity the next time I return (if I ever do), it'll not be the same anymore as they are now constructing a glass shield covering the statue from the front, and an elevator in the middle of it.

As a foreigner you should bring your passport aside is required for purchasing the ticket to enter. There are tour groups but all in mandarin. It's good to have an English speaking friend who can interprete.

A landmark historical site of over a century, the gigantic Buddha is around 70 metre tall! It's super spectacular when you see it close in person. You can also walk along the old pathway nearby. It's a lovely place to go in Chengdu.
The China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda is an educational facility that provides opportunities to view pandas while also offering a volunteer keeper program. In addition, it serves as a retirement home for pandas loaned to other countries who do not understand Chinese. This center differs from the one in Chengdu and is not frequented by many tourists. Hong Kong's Ocean Park housed two giant pandas in 2007 named Yingying and Lele during its tenth week of return.
Pandas! They have a breeding center here where you can sit beside a baby panda and pet it! Also a lot of the loaned put pandas to other countries retire here (which only understand french, japanese, English etc. Instead of Chinese).
This place is very out of the way compared to the panda center in the middle of Chengdu, so basically there are no tourists at all.

Emei Mountain, located in Sichuan Province, China, is a stunning summit with an altitude of 3099m and is considered one of the Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains. An ideal way to experience its beauty is to embark on a night hike and reach the top before sunrise. Witnessing the sun above the clouds from there is truly magical, provided that the sky remains clear. For those who are not fond of hiking, there's a cable car available to access the hotel at the peak.
It’s really a breathtaking view

2023 December. Once in a lifetime must go place. Not suitable for some as it is quite steep at the last stretch although there are handheld carriages which bring you up with a cost.

2nd sector, walk approximately 40mins.

Lastly enjoy the scenery.

Holy place
I visited here in Feb 2013. There still remained snow. Before climbing, I put non-slipper-item on my shoes. That was a little tough walking. But when I arrived at the top there, my body was totally refreshed by the big buddha. That was one of my unforgettable memories in my life. Thank, God. Hope so many people visit here and experience their own emancipation.

How does this place get 4.6 stars rating ?
Personally, I don’t think this place is worth the time and money.
1) We visited Mount Emei for its thousand years old history. But the four faces golden Buddha at the top was built in 2006. And most temples, statues and structures at the top are all relatively new. We may have missed something but we didn’t see anything that resembles thousands years old.
2) A temple is not supposed to collect entrance fee. This place does. 160 yuan per adult ticket. Plus you have to pay for bus tickets and most likely pay for the optional packed 100 persons per cable car 🚠 which are not cheap. They pack 100 persons into one cable car and people would un-politely race and push for good spots in the packed cable car. And the view going up is not as impressive Tianmen Mountain
3) it collects high entrance fee but doesn’t maintain the bathrooms clean and the path clean. You will enter dirty bathrooms and see many trashes along the climb
4) while many tour guides don’t use loud speakers here but many shops do. The speakers noise are annoying. Isn’t mountain temple and its paths are supposed to be peaceful and quiet?
5) along the way, vendors all sell similar products. These stalls are most likely owned by the same companies. There is no uniqueness to the shops
6) Visiting Mount Emei feel like visiting a tourist attraction instead a holy ancient temples. It is too commercialized for profit.
I do not think this place is worth the money if not the time also. I doubt how many are remained from the thousand years old temple. The name Emei temple are used to attract tourist to the modern built temples and statues.
Would not recommend this place for the price and time one needs to spend to get up there. Not worth the money and effort.

Emei Moutain is very nice place to visit, you can see the snow in the winter time and lots of funny monkeys, but you need be carefull about them :)

I grew up in a small town not far from Mt. Emei. It is a mountain that my family visited every a couple of years. I have climbed it from bottom to top at least 6 times in different seasons and every time I enjoyed it very much. It is a combination of nature and culture (Buddhism).
Recommended to people who come to visit Sichuan/Chengdu. It is a top destination!
Summer is the high-season for local people to enjoy the coolness (expensive and crowded). Way less people in the winter and you will see the mountain all covered with snow since the waist of it, marvelous view as well. However, should be careful and suggest to wear a pair of shoes which is suitable for walking on ice.
TIPS: Some tempels actually host people for a small amount of fee. The most beautiful temple is Wannian Temple. It was built about 1, 500 years ago. I have stayed there twice and it was about 20-40rmb per person per night in a twin room (very basic room and only public toilet outside, no shower available?). But it was an amazingly unique experience!!

One of the most beautiful summits I've been to, Mount Emei [ swipe left for the vid ] and its Golden Summit ,
It's a mountain in Sichuan Province, China, and is one of the Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains of China with an elevation of 3099m. The best way to experience it is with a night hike arriving at the top before sunrise as the view of a sun above the clouds is just magical [ but u will have to pray for a clear sky top🙏 ] there is a hotel at the top that u can access with cable car for people who aren't into hiking. On the way back from Mount Emei, u should stop at Leshan for a visit to Leshan big buddha [ 3rd pic ], a 71m statue that took 90 years to crave. Both sites are within a drive from Chengdu

Not cheap to go up here, 90 rmb for shuttle bus 2 ways, 160 rmb for ticket to go to the peak, 120 rmb for cable car 2 ways. Its very cold and iced this time, but if you dont have warm clothes you can hire coat here with 30 rmb only, very convenient and dont need to carry much thing. Scenery is beautiful though toilet is stink and not clean.

Lugu Lake is a picturesque destination that should be on everyone's travel list. This natural wonder is ideal for nature enthusiasts and provides stunning views of its pristine waters and surroundings. To fully appreciate the beauty of the area, it's recommended to rent a car or hire a driver to explore the scenic routes along the way. The lake offers crystal clear waters with an awe-inspiring landscape, making it perfect for sailing and enjoying lake tours.
The road to reach here is very tiring. Everything is worth it when we have arrived here. It is a place for the saints. You would fall in love with this place immediately. I don't mind retiring here at all. It is a place of peace and zen. Love it!

This is just a beautiful place everyone should visit!! I brought my parents here because they both are nature lovers. We were all so amazed by the scenery. Thanks to the good whether, we managed to take all these beautiful photos and had such a good family trip! I would suggest rent a car or book a car with driver to travel around and capture all these views on the way. We stayed there for only 4 days but if I would go there again, maybe a week is enough. Just relax by the lake, do some yoga and mediate :)

Scenic place as imagine, went on the traditional boat tour, it was obviously no pollution at both air and water. However, scenery observation decks can be small and overcrowded. Can't get a good scenic picture with over crowded tourist.

Absolutly the most beautiful place I have been so far. Pristine water, great weather, away from the crowds, calm. And the views... Just amazing. If you plan to go there, stay in Luoshui, as it is most developed of all the towns around the lake (others are really basic and in construction). When you're there, rent a bike and cycle around the lake - the distance is around 45km, but the surface is mostly flat. It took me 6h to complete the trip. The sun there is quite strong, don't forget about sunscreen.

A full 5 star rating to the wonderful experience to witness an enjoyable show. Perfect show with the blend of impressive technology and acting. Good sound system and large capacity for a huge audience. Despite being far at the back, we could watch the whole program with fun. Great show and great theater.

Big stage, beautiful background with the scenery of Yulong Snow Mountain. However, Impression Lijiang Show is not as good as Tianmen Fox Fairy Show I saw in Zhangjiajie.

It is fantastic open air theater telling the stories of Lijiang natives in a series of plays. Some are fun, one was tragic and terribly poignant. The scale of the production is admirable, hundred of actors, lots of horses, stage that looks like the sides of a mountain and to top it off - Jade Dragon Snow Mountain as a backdrop.
Do bring an umbrella as it can be very warm when the sun is high.

Tiger Leaping Gorge is an impressive natural canyon, considered as one of the deepest worldwide. It features scenic trails and river overlooks for visitors to enjoy. The area is surrounded by magnificent snowcapped mountains with beautiful wildflower meadows, but some paths can be dangerous due to rockfall and erosion. For thrill-seekers, there's an adrenaline-pumping Sky Ladder experience that includes narrow walkways on steep cliffsides leading towards certain danger.
A powerful River that you can strongly feel the Mother Nature. It will be a hiking trip here. If you’re lazy, there is also the elevator choice.

Beautiful scenery. Many spots to take beautiful pictures. As we’re travelling with elderly and young children, we bought the tickets for the escalator ride down and up. Recommend you buy the enterance ticket and the escalator ticket in advance. Remember to keep your escalator tickets with you for the ride back up.
We were visiting in Dec, it was blimey cold with the wind chill factor up. Be sure to be warmly dressed if you’re visiting during the winter months.

I spent 4 days hiking through here in 2012 and highly recommend it. Plenty of little homestay/hostels to stay in with resonably priced food and beverage. The hike was extremely interesting with so many different local habitates to experience along the way. Very mountainous terraine with deep valleys and very fast flowing rivers. Fortunately the hiking is quite flat as you do not need to cross any large hills.

A great little hike that can be done over a few days or a sa 1 day hike down to the river (Tiger Leaping Gorge). Use the 'sky ladder' when you come back up! We visited the river when it was 'calm' and it was still so powerful, god knows what it would be like when in spate? A spectacular area to visit and a must when in the region.
Angus Carpenter — Google review
I did the Tiger Leaping Gorge upper trail. There are locals that sell drinks and fruits everywhere along the trail. The trail is fine till the Half-way inn, which is way past halfway of the trail. I would take the shuttle bus to Tina's guest house if you aren't experienced. Because after the Halfway inn the descending begins. The paths are very narrow, there lots of mountain goats and there are no rails that protect you from falling. Also there are loose stones and it's very slippery. At one point you have to cross a stream of water which is really dangerous, which comes from the waterfall shown in the map. I would recommend this trail to experienced hikers.
However the view was beautiful, even though I was mostly focussed on not falling to my death. It took me 8 hours to finish this trail and I took quite a lot of breaks.

Beautiful snowcapped mountains to stare in awe of, while hiking through wildflower dotted meadows, and over precarious cliffsides. Extra care must be taken while hiking here, as some passes have become dangerous due to rock slides and erosion. The skyladder is just what your inner adrenaline junkie might be seeking, as if some of the narrow walkways aside a steep descent towards certain death aren't already enough. 😅

The oxygen level is low up there, so you need to bring 1 or 2 oxygen tanks... for asthma patients do not worry. Just bring more that 2 is enough, and make sure to keep taking the oxygen when you feel dizziness and take your inhaler pam before going up. Suit up the thermal or heatpack shirt and good winter jacket. The view from cable car is already magnificent ..up the glacier is more wonderful and magnificent ✨️ 😍

I recently visited Yulong Snow Mountain and was captivated by its breathtaking views. The majestic scenery painted a picturesque landscape that left me in awe. However, our experience was dampened as we arrived during a snowfall, restricting access to the higher end of the mountain.
Despite the setback, the lower slopes still offered a mesmerizing experience, showcasing the beauty of the snow-covered peaks. The snowfall added a magical touch to the surroundings, creating a serene and tranquil atmosphere.
While we couldn't explore the summit due to safety reasons, I appreciate the concern for visitors' well-being. It's essential to check weather conditions before planning a visit to make the most of this stunning destination.
Overall, Yulong Snow Mountain is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts, but be mindful of the weather to ensure a more comprehensive exploration of this natural wonder.

Be sure to breathe in plenty of oxygen so you get your blood saturated with oxygen hour ahead of time and before you even get close to the main entrance, or it would be a pity to not make it up to the 4680m viewpoint due to altitude sickness.

玉龙雪山 in direct translation, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is the pride of 云南 Yunnan towering 5,596 meters. Magnificently situated near 丽江 Lijiang, the river flowing from the snow capped mountain gives abundant life to the inhabitants, wildlife, flora and fauna. For foreign visitors, best to go with a tour since the ticketing is really complicated. High altitude sickness and quick changing weather are real. Enjoy the adventure. Best time to visit is during winter when the sky is clear.

A must visit wonder in Yunnan.
Visit the place on 22nd Dec Fri with tour guide. The entrance itself at 8am was packed with crowds local & tourists alike. The ropeway to reach the top took about 5mins.
This picturesque landscape is mesmerizing with instagram worthy photoshop so it’s hard to find a remote spot to admire the nature because of the crowd.

Tallest mountain in Lijiang city, located several miles from the ancient town. Entrance fee are required and advised to buy early. Strong wind up there and the cable cars are fast. Temperature are really low up there suggest to wear thicker. Air is very thin and gets dizzy easily, be sure you have your oxygen ready and fit before hiking up there. Overall a great experience for overseas traveller.

Shuhe Old Town is the perfect place to explore the natural and historical beauty of Lijiang, while also enjoying a quiet environment for a sound sleep. The village is close to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, making it easy to get out and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature.
Shuhe Ancient Town, a stone's throw from Lijiang Ancient Town, offers a striking contrast to its lively neighbor. Unlike the bustling streets and shops of Lijiang, Shuhe provides a quieter, more peaceful experience.
In Shuhe, you'll find fewer stores and a more weathered appearance, which adds to its old-world charm. This town boasts over a thousand years of history and well-preserved ancient architecture, giving you a glimpse into its past.
Whether you're a photographer in search of picturesque scenes or simply seeking a peaceful stroll through history, Shuhe is a must-visit destination, offering a different kind of beauty that's worth exploring.

Shuhe Ancient Town, located near Lijiang in Yunnan, China, is a captivating destination that seamlessly blends history and charm. Stepping into Shuhe feels like entering a living museum, with its well-preserved cobblestone streets, traditional Naxi architecture, and serene canals.
The town exudes a timeless atmosphere, providing a glimpse into ancient China. Strolling through its narrow alleys, you'll encounter ancient stone bridges, wooden houses adorned with intricate carvings, and vibrant market stalls selling local crafts. Shuhe's layout reflects feng shui principles, enhancing the overall harmony of the environment.
The town's cultural richness extends to its inhabitants, who have upheld traditional customs for generations. Visitors can engage with the warm and hospitable Naxi people, gaining insight into their unique way of life. Shuhe also boasts breathtaking natural surroundings, with views of the snow-capped Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in the backdrop.
While Shuhe offers a serene escape, it's not immune to modern influences. Art galleries, boutique shops, and cozy cafes have found their place alongside historical landmarks, creating a harmonious blend of old and new. Whether you're interested in history, culture, or simply seeking a tranquil retreat, Shuhe Ancient Town provides a memorable experience that transports you to a bygone era while embracing the present.

This is one of the best ancient towns in lijiang. With its less commercial and easy to access, its the most livable town. This is the only town having crystal clean water passing through its waterways. It even carries koi fish inside.

Our tour group brought us there. This is yet another outdoor shopping center masquerading as an "ancient town". This is largely an effort made by the central government for minority groups to earn a living: people live above their shops. The only thing I found interesting was the strange looking cat-like creature on the roof of many buildings that supposedly protects the inhabitants. Relatively speaking, this ancient town is very laid back as most shops open later than other "ancient towns". Even when the shop is open, there may not be anyone inside. We went inside a coffee shop and the guy from the next shop told us to stay put while he called the owner who was still sleeping. Overall, this looks truly like an ancient town and it is not fancy and crowded with young people like lijiang where young people take selfies and post them on douyin (tiktok).

Not sure why this is rated so highly but Shuhe Old Town is a total tourist trap. There’s a ¥30/person entrance fee if you enter from the main gate. As we walked around the town we did see side entrances you can sneak in from for free.
The whole town itself is basically a run-down and less interesting version of Lijiang Old Town. Sure, there are less people but it was almost to a point where it felt deserted. Also, many of the shops were closed adding even more to the desolate feeling. Maybe it was because we came on a Tuesday afternoon...but according to people we have asked, it’s a pretty peak season for Lijiang travel.
I also didn’t feel like anything was authentic about this town. All the buildings featured stalls after stalls of the same tourist shops: tea, textile (scarves and “ethnic” clothing), flower cakes, and silver. I walked into an indigo textile shop only see to “made in India” on the tags...
It’s almost like Shuhe wanted to duplicate Lijiang Old Town but it did it in the most tacky and unthoughtful way. Oh also, there are horse/donkey drawn carts going through the streets (for the tourists) so you gotta be careful you don’t step in a steaming pile of poop.
The buildings are quite pretty though so if you’re looking to take some nice photos without anyone in them, this would be a nice place. Otherwise, I’d totally give this town a miss and just stick with Lijiang Old Town.

Another ancient town in Lijiang, with longer history than the main one. Since it is a little less know and not in the center of the city, it attracts less tourists, making the area quieter. Don't get discouraged by what you see in the beginning, go to the further ends of the town to see narrow valleys and feel the spirit of the old town. There are numerous cosy cafes all over the place, but I cannot say anything about the quality of their service, since I have not entered to any of them. A lot of couples are having photo shoot sessions in the upper part of the old town. The entrance fee is 40rmb.

By the time we visited this town (June 2019), some of the roads are still under construction, so it is a bit dusty (so wear your face mask). According to the tourist guide, the items sold here is much cheaper than at Lijiang Old Town. But personally, some items are still a bit pricey especially the silver items. Love the old town vibe especially the cafes near the waterway. It was beautifully decorated with flowers and other ornaments. The waterway flowing along the town is also very clean and crystal clear. In terms of shopping, so far most of the shops only accept cash (but I actually saw some locals used WeChat pay). Ability to converse in Mandarin is an advantage as you may be able to have a better bargain or deal as compared to when you're not. 😅 If you are planning to come during summer time, please remember to bring umbrellas or hat and apply your sunscreen (SPF) as the UV rays here is FOUR times higher than any other places.

Other old town that Lijiang has, is Shuhe. This one is quite far, we need to take a bus and have a little walk. The different between Shuhe and Lijiang Old Town, Shuhe is more likely as an attraction where tourists can sit, eat, take a horse trip, shopping, and taking photos. I found Shuhe is not a great place to stay since it far away from town and I agree with someone say that Shuhe is like a tourist trap.
What I like about Shuhe, is at their back side. The main side is quite boring, nothing authentic and too many shops than something to see.
But if you walk thru inside the area, when there’s landscape, rice fields, small river, it’s more calming. And so many pre wedding session as always haha.
The scenic and historic national park of Lijiang Heilongtan boasts a serene pond, ancient temples, and a marble bridge. Visitors can also enjoy breathtaking views of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain from the park. While there is an entrance fee of 80RMB for the Old Town preservation ticket at the main entrance, two other entrances are available to avoid this cost. The park offers a slow-paced atmosphere suitable for families and couples to wander around, with sunset viewing being a popular activity.
Absolutely peaceful and serene lake park. Immaculate landscaping and excellent maintenance. Perfect place for a quiet walk and leisurely contemplation of the beautiful scenery.
SY Teo — Google review
Pleasant enough park, but 50RMB entry fee is a rip-off. No option to pay cash so for foreigners it's the usual Wechat / passport number nonsense (despite poor mobile phone reception).
The Old Town of Lijiang is an ancient part of the city that boasts cobblestone streets, streams, bridges, and traditional Naxi houses. It's a serene environment where one can wander through mysterious alleyways filled with dimly lit bars and quaint shops selling snacks and souvenirs. The contrast between the quiet atmosphere here and the bustling nightlife on Sin Street is significant.
Very popular old town district
Plenty of food, shops and attractions
Even if it could be perceived overly touristic you can still find plenty of typical local specialists in tea 🍵, craftsmen and delicious restaurants
Make sure to stroll around the canals in the morning when less crowded and enjoy the night 🌃 life and join the central plaza for the traditional dances

A must visit place!
I was really impressed with the beauty of the Old Town of Lijiang. The Old Town at night or day has its own beauty. Explore the town at day if you’d love to admire the beauty of quiet time and ancient architecture. To enjoy the hustle and bustle and the culture here, you can visit the town at night.
The Old Town of Lijiang comprises three component parts: Dayan Old Town (including the Black Dragon Pond), Baisha and Shuhe housing clusters. Lijiang also possesses an ancient water-supply system of great complexity and ingenuity that still functions effectively today.

That’s a beautiful traditional Chinese city. I recommend to visit it during the day and night as there are different things to do. Very safe place.
December period is best as it is not too cold and it’s outside tourists season. Avoid hotels inside the old city not because they are not good but you may find it difficult to carry your luggage there as it’s going up and down and the roads are not flat.
When I was there I stayed at Hotel Indigo Lijiang which is located at the south west entrance of the old city. The hotel was fully renovated, very clean and staff were very helpful and help us organizing our trip to the Dragon Jade Mountain. The first day he offered us tea and we talked for an hour.
You can visit the Shizi Mountain from where you’ll see the panorama. They also have beautiful gardens and lots of small traditional shops, rose cakes, tea and coffee. If you love coffee but some beans there as they produce their owns.
I recommend staying 2 to 3 nights as it’s enough time visit the old city and the Dragon Jade mountain area.

I was able to stay in Lijiang for a little under a week in the heart of Old Town. Lijiang's Old Town is an enchanting blend of history and beauty. With its winding cobblestone streets, bridges, and traditional Naxi architecture, the neighborhood feels like a living museum. The town is littered with shops, boasting a diverse array of stores offering souvenirs, textiles, and local delicacies. There are countless dining options where you can savor Yunnan's cuisine while enjoying the picturesque surroundings. Lijiang's Old Town is also a magnet for photographers and tourists alike, making it crowded during most of the day. Shaxi is an ancient commercial town situated in Jianchuan County, part of the Yunnan province in China. The Sideng market plaza located within Shaxi has been listed as one of the 100 Most Endangered Sites in the World Monuments Watch List since 2001.
Erhai, also known as Erhai Lake, is a stunning and massive body of water in Dali, China. The area boasts a mild climate that feels like spring all year round, creating a serene and picturesque setting for visitors. The lakeshore offers plenty of opportunities for exploration, with highlights such as Erhai Park and Butterfly Springs on the western bank.
It’s a lake, but it looks like a sea because of its largeness. Apart from the beauty, Erhai lake is also diverse in plants. There’re lots of tourists attractions around Erhai Lake: Little Putuo, Shengtuolini,… Travelling around Erhai Lake is a good experience owing to its tranquility.

Pretty lake with a continuous cycling trail around. Quite a romantic experience overall if you overlook the rampant presence of touters selling hair braids, baloons, bike rentals and photography hire.
The trail is serene once you pass the retail strip. The trail is well made with craft precision especially on the curve bends. Nature is displayed quite spectacularly with the variety of marshlands, grasslands, wetlands and interactive paved areas.
I'd say avoid all hotel acomodations here as they are quite inflated in price and haphazardly put together.

The lakeshore can be explored by hiking. Highlights include Erhai Park and the Butterfly Springs on the Western bank. Islands on the lake – including Guanyin Ge, Jinsuo Island (金梭岛; 'Golden Shuttle Island'), Nanzhao Folklore Island (南诏风情岛) and Xiaoputuo Island (小普陀) – are also available for visits.
The lake is an important food source for the local people (Bais), who are famous for their fishing method: their trained cormorants catch fish and return them to fishmongers. The birds are prevented from swallowing their fish by rings fixed around their neck.

The Buddhist temple Three Pagodas is an ancient complex consisting of three triangulated pagodas and a reflecting pond. Three Pagodas are one of the best preserved Buddhist structures in China having endured several man-made and natural catastrophes. The middle pagoda, built during 824-840 AD by king Quan Fengyou, is 69.6 meters (227 feet) high and is one of the tallest pagodas in China. The other two pagodas were built about a century later.
Saed Saydul — Google review
The whole three pagoda park is massive and to fully appreciate it, I suggest a day long trip.
It starts at the bottom with a huge car park, just a little north west of the Dali Ancient City. The entrance fee will set you back 120 yuan if you have not joined a tour but the ticket price is inclusive all the mini buses that operate throughout the park - trust me, you will need them. This is still a part of China and it is a MASSIVE park, and I mean massive literally. The three pagodas are just to mark the entrance to the site and the temples that follow on as you climb the mountain side get larger and larger, more grand as you go up. As far as I remember, there are five temples and each is preceded by a courtyard just as massive. I saw a lot of Chinese pilgrims alighting the incense at every temple, dancing and praying for good fortune. It was enchanting and mesmerizing to watch this Chinese lady performing Taichi moves before entering each of the temples.
The best part of the necessary part I guess is the free temple food about half way up. You get a bowl of rice to keep you going with vegetable side dishes. I suggest a little donation back... If still not satisfied, look back at the way you have climbed and you will be impressed by the view of the ancient Erhai lake. The kings of the ancient Dali kingdom has chosen the right site, it has magically qualities especially when the rain stops and the sun spills onto the ground.
Worth a trip, highly recommended!

Exploring the Dali's Timeless Charm
Venturing through Dali, Yunnan, was a journey through time and beauty, leaving me that sweet longing to return. From the tranquil Erhai Lake, where the waters mirror the sky's serenity, to the iconic Three Pagodas standing tall against the backdrop of ancient history, every sight was a marvel. 🏞
At the foot of Cangshan Mountain, the temple whispered tales of loyalty, devotion, and spirituality, inviting contemplation and peace. ⛰ Each moment in Dali felt like a step into a bygone era, yet the vibrant culture and warm hospitality embraced me with open arms. Amidst this wonder, nostalgia lingers, beckoning me back.
Cherry blossoms bloom along some parts of the city's roadside, adding a delicate touch of beauty to the enchanting landscape. 🌸 And as the radiant sunlight casts its golden hues over the temple at the foot of Cangshan, it illuminates the surroundings with a heavenly glow, enhancing the spiritual aura of the place. ☀

Dali Ancient City is a charming destination for tourists, with its chessboard-like layout featuring shops selling handicrafts and local cuisine, as well as bars in a relaxed setting. The town's rich history adds to its allure, as visitors can walk the same streets that played a significant role in world history thanks to Dali's influence. A small museum also provides some insight into the town's past, though it could be more comprehensive.
Beautiful place.
I think the history behind the old Town really makes it interesting.

Dali Ancient City, with its distinct charm and historical allure, earned a solid 4/5 in my Google rating. The city's ancient architecture and vibrant atmosphere create a unique setting that captivates visitors.
The well-preserved ancient structures, cobbled streets, and the iconic South and North Gates reflect the rich history of Dali. Exploring the city feels like stepping back in time, with every corner revealing a piece of its cultural heritage.
While the ambiance is undoubtedly enchanting, I found that some areas lacked clear signage, making navigation a bit challenging. However, this minor inconvenience didn't overshadow the overall experience.
The local markets, featuring handicrafts and traditional treats, added a delightful touch to my visit. The friendly locals and their willingness to share stories about the city's history enhanced the authenticity of the journey.
In summary, Dali Ancient City is a must-visit for those seeking a blend of history and culture. With a bit of navigation patience, the city offers a memorable escape into the past, earning its well-deserved 4-star rating.

I would say, this the best ancient city in China. For 3-4 square meters, it seems inside a huge shopping complex with everything you name it. I have been to many Ancient Cities in China but they are too sloppy and disappointing.
Dali Ancient City day time and night time is totally different. Day time is relaxing. Night time is exciting.
The best location to stay is near Po Ai Gate or South Gate. As almost the entire City is walking street, hotels near the Gates are the most convenient as you don't have to walk too far away from the main road outside the City.
Right outside the PoAi Gate has a great restaurant serving the best Steam Pot Chicken in Yunnan. It has a special way in serving. A bowl of wheat noodle is accompanied with the steam pot of chicken and a bowl of hot sauce too.
From Po Ai Gate to the walking street is just few steps beyond. The walking street has a man made stream in day time. In the evening, the sound of stream wil be replaced by musicians.
Overall, Dali Ancient City is a must to visit in China.

Typical Chinese touristic city, in the city where more or less it is spring like weather the whole year, just a bit colder then Kunming as it is a bit higher in altitude.
It's beautiful, especially the mountains surrounding it.
Not a lot western restaurants /bars if you are in search for that. Then better move on to Lijiang, having said that, it is a nice city with beautiful surroundings, not that far from Kunming (the city of eternal spring).
I rented a bike and it is wonderful to bike in the area.
Also I went to the mountains, modern cable cars available. Skiing not possible for those seeking that. But very nice views, high altitude.

Worth a visit. The 'Ancient' city appears more built for tourists. There is a different feel then that of most Chinese ancient cities; that is the presence of international influence. There are bars, while still very much Chinese, with a little international feel. If you are looking for a genuine old Chinese city this is not it. But if you are looking for a little West meets East you will probably like Dali.

This is a super crowded outdoor shopping center masquerading as an "ancient city". They concentrated on selling locally made merchandise, including silverware, fruits, and "flower" bakery. On an interesting note, these silverware shops would hire some guy aimlessly banging on a small piece of silver with a hammer to insinuate that their silverware was handmade. We took a two days tour with this agency and I'm not really sure if we can recommend it. I asked several times, to make sure, that we will get a guide fluently speaking English and eager to explain us things and introduce into the culture of mountain tribes. I've been ensured that we will get a good guide, able to make this tour interesting. Well...if you walk two days in the almost flat terrain, what makes the tour interesting is the guide and his stories. Unfortunately, that wasn't in our case. Our guide was very kind but he hardly could compose a sentence in English, so we get VERY LITTLE information about what we see, people we meet. He also didn't pay attention to the group, if everyone is following him, if everyone is ok. In case of injury, I'm not sure he would even notice.
The place we stayed overnight was very nice, all the way the food we get was excellent, people were kind and welcoming. We also get a snacks from our guide.
It was just fine, bit boring, I was expecting to learn a way more as I do not need guide just to follow him on the easy path...

I wanted a tailor-made itinerary, a long day of trekking.
We agreed on an itinerary but the guide needed to make a few phone calls regarding the price.
A few minutes later, we agree via messenger on the tour and the price. He also explains to me that it will be a friend of his who will do the tour.
The next day when I arrived at the start of the trek, my guide for the day whom I had just met took stock of the trek with me.
The transfer planned at the end of the hike was no longer covered, I had to pay.
We made a call to the guide with whom I had been in contact the day before and after 5 minutes of discussion to try to understand, he got angry, insulted me... So much so that the guide on site took the phone from me to hang up...
I am also a guide in France, I would never allow myself to speak like this to a client.
Too bad because the trek itself was really fun, passing through the plantations, in the jungle, visiting several villages and even a school, excellent lunch and great guide for the day which had to be made up despite the gloomy atmosphere at the start morning.
Fortunately the guide apologized afterwards. I also appreciated it.
TO SUMMARY: Agree on the price and the services included, even if it means writing them down.

Mandalay Hill is a significant Buddhist pilgrimage site featuring numerous pagodas, monasteries, and stunning panoramic views. While many travelers may only pass through Mandalay to visit the Mahamuni Paya temple with its ancient 13-foot tall Buddha, taking the time to explore beyond the modern areas reveals a diverse collection of mosques, temples, churches, and pagodas along with countless monasteries lining the riverside.
Magnificent panoramic outlook over the surrounding lowlands, especially around the golden hour and under a slightly hazy sky.

Mandalay Hill is an awe-inspiring site that offers a profound spiritual and panoramic experience. The ascent up the 1,729 steps is rewarded with breathtaking views of Mandalay, the Ayeyarwady River, and the surrounding landscapes. Sunset at Mandalay Hill is particularly enchanting, with the sun casting a warm glow on the golden stupas. It's a place of tranquility, reflection, and stunning vistas, making it a must-visit attraction for travelers exploring Mandalay and seeking a deeper connection with Myanmar's heritage.

From memory, as we were told at the entrance, it is about 1700 steps to the top but this made the climb all the more worthwhile! The view is spectacular right across Mandalay. The cost of entry was tiny although they could have been a little more transparent about it. There are benches at intervals for those that need a rest on the way up and drinks vendors selling water and other drinks. There are other interesting temples to see in the vicinity of Mandalay Hill after you've walked back down. If you want to learn about the country you're visiting, you have to make the effort! We recommend it.

We were lucky enough to arrive in the city and to be transported right away in this amazing temple. The sunset light was the best thing and all the colours of the walls and decorations irradiated brightness and sparkles. The monks were super nice, they came talking to us (to practice their English as we later discovered), they were curious and kind. Amazing experience :-)

Very nice place to climb. It takes from 40 minutes to 1 hour approximately depends on you. There are many pagodas on the way and local markets where you can stop. The hike should be done barefoot so be prepared to end with your feet very dirty. The views from the top are very amazing and the atmosphere very good. If you are very tired to return by walk, you can take a local transportation that takes you to the bottom of the hill, the price is 1000 kyats per person.
Kuthodaw Pagoda, an important Buddhist temple and pilgrimage site in Mandalay, is home to the revered Mahamuni Buddha image. Constructed by King Mingdon in the late 19th century, this complex boasts 729 shrines containing marble slabs inscribed with the complete text of the Tripitaka, making it the world's largest book.
There are many inscriptions around the pagoda area that was inscribed of Buddha sermons and doctrines called Three Tipitakha as Pali .
Moreover you can see extremely old star-flower trees in there .

Beautiful pagoda with an interesting history. The Buddhist scriptures in each of its many stupas were once etched with gold and gemstones, but the British looted this all when they came through. It is still a beautiful place. Some rows of stupas are better maintained than others. The marble floor tiles help keep one's feet cool while the sun blazes, as do some leafy trees.
Women who enter can borrow a longyi for free at the entrance. There is no entrance fee for tourists.

Kuthotaw Pagoda is an amazing place. King Mindon had built the pagoda as part of the traditional foundations of the new royal city, Mandalay in 1857. He convened and lead the Fifth Buddhist Synod in 1871. The king wanted to leave a great work of merit by having the Tipitaka set in stone for posterity. The construction began in 1860 and the inscriptions were opened to the public on 4th May 1868. They were arranged in neat rows within three enclosures, 42 in the first, 168 in the middle and 519 in the third. One more stands at the southeast corner of the first enclosure making it 730, and this stone records how it all came into being. Thirty four brick rest houses (Zayats) stood all around except on the east side of the pagoda.

The monastery features intricate teak carvings throughout its roof and walls depicting stories from Buddhist mythology. Bagaya Monastery is a quiet and serene place that is best seen in the afternoon when you can almost have the place for yourself. The teak building with its deep red colors also has elements made of stone. The heaviness of the stone contrasts with the beauty of the wood and the delicate nature of the temple's wood carvings. Some parts of the building are gilded. Others have lost their gold color. The combination of various elements and colors give the building an aura of faded glory. Make sure to go around the building for perspectives of the ensemble that you would miss otherwise.

The Bagaya Monastery, located in Inwa, Mandalay Region, Burma. This magnificent monastery is also known as Maha Waiyan Bontha Bagaya Monastery.
The Bagaya Monastery (Bagaya Kyaung) was built in 1834 during the reign of King Bagyidaw. But it’s actually the second attempt–the original, which dated back to 1593, burned down in 1821.
Amarapura, just south of Mandalay City, was the royal capital of Burma during periods in the 18th and 19th centuries. It’s now no more than a township and has long been subsumed as part of Mandalay City. But it’s still quite rural, with what were once opulent stone pagodas and palaces destroyed by earthquakes and now overgrown.
The pagoda is made entirely of teak, a timber long prized in shipbuilding and boatbuilding. It’s held up by 267 massive posts of teak, the largest of which is 60 feet high and 9 feet in circumference. The floors and walls are also made of teak. Making this today would be prohibitively expensive even if you could still find solid teak trunks like this anymore.

The Pindaya cave is an important pilgrimage site for Burmese Buddhists and an attractive, unusual sights for tourists.
The cave is set in a limestone hill in Central Burma not far from Inle Lake. The hill contains three caves, only one of which is open to the public. This cave that is about 150 meters long contains thousands of Buddha images in various styles and from different eras from the early Konbaung dynasty era to present day.
Every small corner and nook of the cave is cramped with Buddha images up to the ceiling. Between the images are also a number of small pagodas as well as stalagmites and stalactites.
During the course of several centuries thousands of Buddha images have been put inside the cave. Many statues bear the name of the person who donated it. The number of images is constantly growing since people are still adding more, by now there about 9,000.
In front of the entrance is a sculpture of a giant spider and a Prince aiming his bow at it. Local legend tells that once a giant spider lived in the cave. One day the spider captured a local Princess and held her captive in the cave. According to the legend, the Prince armed with bow and arrow killed the spider, thus rescuing the Princess. The cave is open daily during daylight hours. Entrance fee is US$ 3 per person.

The town of Pindaya sits in the south eastern corner of Shan state and is often bypassed by for the nearby, and better known, Inlay Lake. Having seen both I would say both places warrant looking at if you have time. If you are on a tight schedule I would wholeheartedly recommend foregoing Inlay, and spending a couple of days in Pindaya instead. My reasons for this recommendation are based primarily on the visual splendor of Pindaya Cave. If you add in the low numbers of travelers going there, the less commercialised feel of the town, the great scenery, the 350 year old Banyan trees lining the roads, and the exceptional Green Tea Restaurant, and its views across the lake, then Pindaya seems like a far better option than Inlay.

The lake and its surroundings are beautiful and well worth the visit! A little boat tour is a must, visiting ‘floating’ villages, markets and restaurants.
If you’re lucky you’ll see some traditional fishermen doing their thing. Understandably it’s a very water-focussed / dependent way of life there and it was really interesting to observe that.
As with everywhere I experienced in Myanmar, people are warm, friendly and welcoming.
My regret is we went there for the day so missed both sunrise and sunset there, bet that would have been spectacular.

Very much worth visiting the lake and surrounding country side. Do take a boat tour on the lake if you have the time. It is wonderful, the atmosphere, the 'one legged' fishermen, little children in boats, it's like riding a bike for them, the swimming gardens, the homes on the lake and to top it all of, a small excavator sitting on a floating island in the middle of the lake. All very interesting to take in and enjoy during a boat trip with breaks for visiting with a local family and another for lunch. Theirs is a hard life, but for tourists it's all so tranquil and enjoyable.
We take toy cars, calenders and postcards with sights from home as little gifts for locals when we visit or for instance, when they graciously let us use their toilet at the side of the road, when no restaurants are around.
Not so fond of the toilet situation on the lake, as the outhouse 'droppings' went straight into the lake and some (visiting) people discarded their (western) hygiene products which floated around in the enclosed outhouse space. Quite thoughtless and disgusting.
I will never forget our visit, as we were at this lake during the 2004 Tsunami and, even though we were hundreds of miles away from the epicenter, the ground was shaking, everone was panicking and tunning out of buildings, our SUV was moving forward and backwards several feet on its own, the water in our guest houses pond was sloshing back and forth and the noise sounded like a helicopter was landing on the roof or a freight train going by. Never want to experience anything like it again.

Inle Lake was truly an incredible experience! I highly recommend this destination to anyone who loves natural beauty, cultural immersion, and delicious food.
First of all, the scenery at Inle Lake is simply magical. The lake itself is surrounded by rolling hills and lush forests, and there are stilt houses and floating gardens dotted throughout the water. I took a boat tour around the lake, and it was the perfect way to take in all the stunning views.
But what really made my trip to Inle Lake special was the opportunity to learn about local culture and cuisine. I took a cooking class with a local chef and was amazed by the fresh ingredients and unique flavors that are used in Burmese cooking. We made everything from traditional soups to savory curries, and I even got to take home a cookbook with all of the recipes we made.
Overall, I can't recommend Inle Lake enough. It's a must-see spot for anyone traveling to Myanmar, and the boat tour and cooking class are experiences that you simply can't miss. 5 stars all the way!

This is an absolute gem and a must-go destination in Myanmar. The vibe is serene, and the lake is like a giant mirror reflecting the cool scenery. You can hop on a boat and cruise around, soaking in the laid-back atmosphere. The lake mirrors the beauty around, making every moment Instagram-worthy. The floating gardens and traditional stilt houses give it a legit local touch. Whether you’re a nature lover or just looking for a chill time, Inle Lake is one of the best places to visit. Spending time here with my family is unforgettable and totally worth the visit!

Definitely worth a visit. Plan for the whole day and go early. You might want ear plugs as the noise from the boat engine is rather loud. We couldn't have asked for more.

Definitely worth a trip. You do not need to book before you arrive in town. Book the day before. Directly is cheapest!
Be careful with who you go with, as they might want detours you do not! Looking back, I wish I had gone alone instead of sharing my trip.
As of Dec 2018, boat trips are 15000 (for the whole boat) without Shwe Indein Pagoda. However it is a *must see* and the best thing you'll do - 3000 extra. Tips are appreciated and 1000 is enough. Fake fisherman ask for money for posing- they are the ones in faded orange. Makes a good photo- up to you. Enjoy!

Been to Inle Lake twice and absolutely love this place!!! The serene, vast and beautiful lake is one very great attraction in Myanmar. Would be more fun to visit the lake during the float/boat festival where more exciting and interesting events occur. Love the activities on the lake - boat trip, floating garden, markets and the unique way of boatman rowing oar with just their legs!!!

This is a peaceful and gorgeous place to enjoy a countryside. I took a bicycle traveling around the town in the morning to learn about the local people. In 2018, the place is under the development for better future. We a team of two friends take a boat tour around the Inle Lake. It is a other sides of the place where local people travel by boat and have local market under the temple. We enjoyed the sunset in the wooden bridge and a boat tour around the village. In general, this is a different world compared to developed cities with friendly and tolerance local people.

Sights & Landmarks
Points of Interest & Landmarks
The Maha Bodhi Ta Htaung Standing Buddha is a colossal statue, one of the largest in the world. It is adorned with golden robes and features intricate interior paintings. This magnificent landmark can be easily accessed by local pickups from town or at the intersection. An elevator is available from the 2nd or 3rd floor, leading up to the 12th floor, where visitors can continue climbing to reach the donation box situated inside its head.
One of the best places to visit around Monywa.
The biggest Buddha Statue I've ever seen 🙀

BIG Buddha! Like... REAL BIG!
great visit and easily reachable by local pickups from town / swap in the intersection. There is an elevator from the 2nd or third floor all the way to the 12th, then you can climb up all the way to the donation box which sits in the head. Will you see any view after doing all that climbing? Not really, but you will be inside big buddy Buddha's head and no one can take it from you after that.
The temple grounds have amazing views as well of the surrounding area.

This place is a place where you can show the value of Myanmar's religious piety.
The Pagoda has two cave temples. You can explore both of them. At winter time, floor is too cold without socks. Be prepared.

As with all pagodas it is neat to see other cultures and religions. The cave is moist and small, full of buddha's and can be crowded. Free so no harm or loss if you don't enjoy the experience. Has an upper and lower cave to view.

Quite amazing, I must say. Not unusual after seeing so many caves in Hpa An, but still this one is different - thousands of Buddha statues in a cave... And quite nearby Kalaw. So it's a good alternative to Pindaya caves

Highly recommend it Amazing and unique! Havent visit a Pagoda like this full of Buddhas in different styles and positions located on and inside a mountain, making of Kalaw a Must visit location in Myanmar! Just a bit cold when you have to take your shoes off but its worth it!!!

Very impressive cave with many many statues. You wont expect it when you're on the outside. There is a lot of water coming from the rocks above you, so the floor can be a bit slippery. there are also a few impressive golden pagodas on the outside. If you are in kalaw its really worth a visit! Its not far from the center.

I really love this place and its tranquility. Located in Kalaw and took ten minutes drive from downtown Kalaw. The campus of pagoda is guarded by the military and if you go there by car, it's Ok. If you go there by motor cycle, you need to stop your machine and walk through the gate. I don't understand that silly rule. The is a cave where many buddha statutes are sculptured. But the vicinity of the pagoda is really quiet and I like that feeling.

One of the hidden gem that tourist won’t get easy to access in. Have to passby the military sentry point which we though we won’t allow to enter the army camp. The temple is Located inside the army camp premises

Can bring kids because it is not very deep cave. A lot of buddha images and small cave from main path...
