It was a small Maya power during the late Classic period and might have existed into post-Classic times. The ruins are scattered over a wide area, with only a few mounds cleared so far. The site's strategic location with access to a grand water source suggests careful planning.
Beautiful place in a forest. Donation based, so we are glad to help such a beautiful community.

unique smaller ruins with a cenote that is a little off the beaten path! we had the place to ourselves and enjoyed hearing stories from our guide. 1.5 hours with a guide, but could definitely be shorter if we went on your own. many stairs to get to the final temple but the first two areas (ball court and main plaza) are fairly accessible and flat.
Chelsea Carlson — Google review
Really nice site that is tiny but fun to visit. Take the time to go all the way up, to get stunning views and a really nice vista of the cenote. There’s not much information to be found, but with your imagination you can go a long way :) also: donation based entree!

Way cool. Imagine living there 2500 yrs ago. Strategic planning of this location was duly noted.

Zona arqueológica bella, con una estructura impresionante la cual te captiva, la vista que se tiene desde arriba del templo mayor es imponente.
This ruins are amazing not just because the city of the ruins is amazing but the nature around it is impressive, and the view from the top of the main temple is stunning

Sumidero Canyon National Park is home to an impressive natural wonder known as Canon del Sumidero. This deep and narrow gorge was formed by the Rio Grijalva over 36 million years ago. Visitors can take a boat tour down the river and witness stunning sights such as crosses and monkeys, though some may have tracking devices on their necks. However, the canyon's beauty is tainted by tons of plastic trash covering the water.
Canyon is very nice, and it’s a great change to see a crocodile and birds. But take a warm clothes and eyeglasses with you, even if it’s +30 degree, it can be cold because of the wind (when you are on the speed boat it’s super windy 😄) 🙌🏻
Vasylyna L — Google review
Amazing scenery, worth a visit!
Éva Simonyi — Google review
Lovely boat cruise down the river. Saw cross and monkeys, though the monkey had a tracking device on its neck so unsure if they are all tracked. It would be 5 stars but the water is covered in TONS of plastic trash, which is sad. If they don't make efforts to clean the garbage, tourism will likely die down.

Really good place in Chiapas.
This place has a lot of years and all the things that you can see are incredible.
Oscar Rodríguez Morales — Google review
A Mexican friend of mine recommended me it’s the best tourist attraction in Mexico and so I visited with colleagues.
We saw three wild crocodiles.
The cliff look like a Christmas tree was fantastic with plenty of negative ions.
Ayako Maeda — Google review
Amazing place, all the nature we saw was incredible and we were on a boat seeing and enjoying everything. We had a great time there.
Cristina Mu?oz — Google review
This is such a beautiful place to visit when you’re in Mexico. I’m so glad I didn’t skip this during my stay here in Mexico. Recommend!!
Lorena C. — Google review
What an incredible place! We visited here as a day trip from San Cristobal and it was truly stunning. We visited 2 viewpoints first and then into the canyon itself. The boat tour was 2 hours and stunning for every part of it. The boat operators don't speak English but their Spanish is very clear so you can pick up most of what they say even if you only have a little Spanish. We saw 6 crocodiles, some monkeys, an iguana and so many birds, including pelicans. I saw previous reviews commented on the rubbish floating in the river - we learned that this is due to the heavy rainfall and they are working hard to clear this. We had a fantastic day here and very highly recommend it.
Sinéad Browne — Google review
Had a fantastic time on this tour. The history of the canyons are amazing. A lot of wildlife to see I recommend this tour.
Raymond Campbell — Google review
I think it’s a must go location in Chiapas. The boat ride is about 2,5 hours, and the whole route is very beautiful. The view, air, wild nature, all comes together, and creates that magic vibe. Absolutely recommend!
Nelia Kalakhan — Google review
Amazing! We had a day trip with stops at the viewpoints in the morning and a boat trip in the first hours of the afternoon! We had quite luck as we managed to see both crocodiles and monkey! One star less only for the huge amount of rubbish floating in the canyon
Gaetano Vivirito — Google review
It’s a beautiful canyon there is no doubt - but more needs to be done about the amount of trash in the river. I know they remove a lot already but with all the tourist trips and cash, there needs to be more done.
I loved seeing the crocodiles, birds etc but my overwhelming feeling was sadness that they were living in an ecosystem filled with plastic - hopefully no humans eat the fish from this river because they will be toxiiiic.
Also we couldn’t visit one of the caves because the driver said there was so much inside plastic it might block the boat engine!!!
Chloe Hall — Google review
A very nice and natural tour in the river. Great for photography. I do admit there is a point where is a lot of trash, however there is a group that cleans the canyon daily except for Sundays. You can also go up to special points in the mountains which giv3 amazing views.
ZOOMAT, a zoo founded in 1942, houses only animals that are native to the region. It also has a library and cafeteria. Located in Chiapas, which boasts of diverse natural environments, ZOOMAT is home to the highest concentration of animal species in North America. The zoo features spacious and forested enclosures where about 180 different species reside, including various big cats, butterflies, birds and other wildlife.
I had a spectacular experience. This zoo focuses on local and indigenous species including the endanger jaguar and tapir. Black capybaras wander about freely. There are inspirational stones along the walking paths with thought provoking sayings. It was a very hot day, but with the extensive tree canopy it felt pleasant. Be prepared for walking. Regardless of which was you go, it is one big loop with up hill sections.
Jeanette Weiser — Google review
Not much of a Zoo… more like a beautiful nature park with a lot of birds and maybe some monkeys… lots of walking. At 35 pesos you can’t beat it but don’t expect an exciting Zoo.
To me the highlight of the place is the Caimans and Crocs as well as the spiders that are literally everywhere! That was really cool!
Hugo Correa — Google review
We loved being in the jungle at Zoomat, & how all the animals are from around Mexico & have lots of space, like they’re in their own natural environment. Our kids enjoyed seeing deer running free & some birds wandering around as well. Walking around to see all the animals took about 2 hours, which was a great way to spend the afternoon. Highly recommend :)
Emily Lahdy — Google review
It’s a really nice zoo . Recommended for everyone and strolls too
Beto Dom?nguez Ruvalcaba — Google review
Decent zoo place with shade and some coolness (in comparison to Tuxtla! ;-), mostly local species (very few crocodiles though 🤔) - for me the best were the colorful birds. Also please beware that no drinks or any other refreshments are being sold there right now (= pandemic) + the place is really closing at 1pm.
David Krhut — Google review
This is a lovely zoo, considering how much we paid for entry. They've done an amazing job with the enclosures. Almost the entire zoo is under the tree canopy, so don't worry about your sunglasses. The only thing I felt could be improved is that they don't tell you what country/continent a critter is from, just their habitat. But it's not a huge deal. Some unique animals here. 👌
Kate Alex and Noah Davies — Google review
Inexpensive to visit, I even have lots of free range animals like monkeys, deer, and small rodents Ijust walking around the place. There is definitely a lack of larger mammals, but that is understandable given their cost of upkeep and maintenance. Definitely a good thing to do if you are in the city. The sound of the howler monkeys crying above you as you walk around the zoo is pretty impressive!
Chris Wegert — Google review
The nature and trees at this zoo is a big one. On the animal side, depending if you’re lucky you get to see them or they can be either sleeping or hiding. The prices is so affordable!
Armando Gomez — Google review
The service is poor , the animals look very sad and sick , all people that work there always are speaking together that the salary is cheap 😭, and they world hard, but they never received any incentive or something like that, others staff member looks like depressive and angry with all, also when you arrive the girls that are asking about your tickets are very impolite and very arrogant with local people as well, terrible customer service , they are racist, hope that they improve.
Nayeni Matias #Yoviajosola — Google review
Great zoo with alot of different animals to see and learn about. It's free on Tuesdays and half price before 10am. If you're not from Mexico like myself, just ask for tickets in Spanish and tell them you're exchange students. Worked for us and got in for $20 Pesos instead of $60! Worth a visit if you're in town.
Coffee has a very interesting history, from now on I gonna enjoy my coffee and remember it takes a lot of work for us to have that cup of coffee on our table

Loved this place, so much information about coffee and very cool exhibits! You get a free espresso or American coffee at the end of the tour. They also sell all types of coffee.

Interesting museum to know the history of coffee in Mexico especially Chiapas, volunteers from the local university were very friendly and gave a quick tour in perfect English!
DylanHanqi Zhang — Google review
Really interesting, costs 25 pesos and includes a coffee degustation ! Thinking about the fact that a regular coffee costs 20 pesos in general, let’s say it’s basically 5 pesos to get in !

I loved this place. The guide we had was very thorough in his explanations and very easy to follow with the actual display, pictures and animations. At the end you also get a complimentary coffee! :)

Parque de la Marimba is a spacious and well-liked park that features gardens and a charming gazebo. It's a popular spot for locals to take an evening stroll, located eight blocks west of Plaza Civica. The park is known for its free marimba concerts every night from 6pm to 9pm, which attract crowds of people who come to enjoy the live music and dancing around the central bandstand.
Live music and dance every evening in the park. Very nice ambiance and full of cafes and restaurants.

We spent a beatiful night under musical notes of la marimba. A free event for avery one. You only need lots of energy to dance. People all over tuxtla. Guitierres come to this even which is on Fridays nights.

They get lit in this park. I was surprised. There are lots of bars and restaurants and love entertainers that engage the crowd here.

A great place! You can hear marimba for free an dance too💃🕺, join others that dance at the rhythm of the “woods that sing” (marimba😉)… from 5:30 pm to 8:30pm aprox

Central place of Tuxtla. The city name is written with iconic elements such as the canyon de sumidero. A lot of life happens on this ventral place and marimba is played most of the day.Feel free to dance with locals! The coffee shop around are very good with authentic Chiapas coffee

This is your standard urban park in Latin America. Not amazing, not horrible. Decent place to stop and sit on a park bench to tie your shoe or watch some pigeons looking for crumbs. Pretty uneventful overall.

A must go to while in Tuxtla! They have music from Wednesday to Sunday. 6-8:30pm. Great atmosphere and many vendors around the park for delicious treats, food and drinks. Great time to unwind after a long day of exploring.

The Museo de la Marimba in Tuxtla offers a unique opportunity to explore the evolution and construction of this musical instrument. Despite limited knowledge of Spanish, visitors can still benefit from an informative guided tour. The museum showcases various marimba types and provides insight into the rich tradition behind them. A private performance awaits at the end, adding a special touch to the experience.
Though the lots of marimba types in display are nice, you should come for the marimba guys!
They we're great and gave a little private show, and I even got to try play the marimba myself, at least tried to ;)
If you in the area of marimba park you should check it, and even try to be at the park at 6pm for the shows in the park
Shai Ariel — Google review
Lots of cool exhibits and information about this great tradition. Highly recommended.
Jesus Ginez — Google review
It's open! I'd read online that the museum was closed but happened to pass by and see the door open. My Spanish is limited, but the guided tour was still very informative and I learned so much about how the instrument has evolved and is constructed. At the end, you are treated to a private performance. This was my favorite experience in Tuxtla.

Simple rooms in a woodsy lodging next to a deep cavern, plus meals, rock climbing & spelunking.
Wow! What an amazing experience my son's and I had while visiting this paradise is beautiful Chiapas! Our guides Lu and Valentín made it even better. We loved the repel experience! We had never done something like this before we felt completely safe and secure the whole time. They are very professional and are very passionate about being at Sima de Las Cotorras. It is a must see and unforgettable experience. I am so thankful I was able to have this experience with my sons. They also offer food onsite that was delicious! Can't wait to come back!

I was expecting to see at least some parrots but, there’re none. The food are expensive and they serve you a small portion.
They charge you the entrance as well $50 per person.
Silvia Hernandez — Google review
Extremely expensive - 2000 pesos per night for a cabaña for three people or 150 pesos per person to camp outside with your own hammock!
As it was so expensive we only stayed long enough to walk around. It was really cool to see and we saw lots of lovely butterflies. It's perfect for a short visit (1-3 hours maximum).
If you plan to visit bare in mind that without a car it's extremely difficult to get there unless you pay for a taxi and the parrots migrate between November and January so will not be there during those months.
Anna A — Google review
We went in December and wasn’t aware that it was off season (as the parrots migrate between December and January due to the cold). However, wasn’t much of a problem for us.
bit difficult to get to if you don’t own a car and they don’t answer messages so we decided to turn up as weren’t able to pre-book online. The cabanas are very expensive compared to other cabanas we have stayed in, they quoted us $2000 pesos for three people. They said we could stay in our own hammocks in a camping site for $150 pesos per person but it was cold.
When we explained we would not be staying the night - the staff were rude and told us if we didn’t want to pay, to get a taxi back to the town. Luckily we had a number for a taxi driver, so we called him and returned to the local town.
Amazing view of the sinkhole from above and it is a good day trip if you are in the area but don’t need to stay there long. We were told they have recently changed owners, so not sure if this has something to do with the expensive cabanas and think the other reviews aren’t as relevant now (price wise specifically).

An incredible experience at Sima de las Cotorras Eco Parque! The place is impeccably clean and well-organized. The bathrooms are well-maintained, adding to the comfort of the visit. The manager was exceptionally friendly and knowledgeable, providing us with valuable information about the site. We had a fantastic time here and highly recommend this destination for anyone seeking both hiking, cleanliness and a warm, informative welcome.

Beautiful! We came at dawn expecting to see a flock of parrots, but they just leave a few at a time all morning, so no need to get there early! But the staff are really nice and the adventure route turned out to be really fun. Rappelling, spelunking, hiking, rock climbing and zip lining. We were the only people there and the guide took us through the whole route ourselves.
Tyler Baker — Google review
Beautiful place!
We came here because we wanted to do the rappel and we were not disappointed by anything.
The room we was cute and is well maintained in a beautiful small house built with rock. They tried to preserved the nature as much as possible. As it is in the middle of nowhere, the night was very quiet.
The hotel has a restaurant. We tried it and the food was very good.
People who are working there are really nice.
And the experience of the rappel was amazing!!

We were very excited to see this natural wonder. After the long journey in and paying 900 pesos for our family of five to enter and camp, the disappointment began. There is no infrastructure for camping and so we set up our tents on a slant, trying to avoid the rocks and horse poop from the horses who free range through the camping area. When you pay that much to camp, you expect minimum infrastructure and there was none of it and dirty bathrooms to boot. An hour and a half after we had set everything up- tents, air mattresses, etc. and as night was falling the same young girl (maybe 14 years old?) who had manned the entrance gate, charged us and let us in came back over to say that we had to pack up and leave because no animals were allowed and we had our dog with us (calm and on a leash). We were stunned! There had been no mention verbally or through signage that pets were not allowed. When I went to the owner for my refund and complained that he was not managing his business well to have let in guests who did not meet entrance criteria we had no way of knowing (no mention of it at the gate and no signs) he proceeded to blame the young lady at the gate and tell me that he was mad at her and would be following up (I heard him yelling at her as I left). It made my blood boil to watch an owner sit arrogantly at a table throughout a customer issue his poor management caused, as he delegated all challenging tasks to a child and then responded to my direct feedback with arrogance and complete lack of personal accountability as the owner. It made me sick to my stomach that a man like him would be making money off a substandard experience and that he had no shame to dump on a young and poorly trained employee.
The sink hole is beautiful and we saw parrots fly in and out. It is lovely but very poorly managed and over priced and I personally feel relieved that I did not contribute financially to the wealth of a business owner with poor customer service, ethics and management skills.
EL MADRESAL is a serene beachfront ecological resort that offers cozy cabins with terraces. This tranquil retreat is perfect for both families and couples seeking a peaceful getaway. The resort features well-maintained accommodations surrounded by natural beauty, including one of the most stunning beaches in the area. The friendly staff ensures a pleasant stay, and the restaurant/bar serves delicious food.
To travel to Madresal is quite a trip. But for those who strike out on the travel to Madresal it will pay handsomely! We were looking to stay for 2-3 nights but ended up staying 5 nights. You'll arrive by a small boat through the mangroves, over the lagune to the hotel area. The hotel is made up of a collection of huts with a restaurant at the beach. The huts are basic but all you need to enjoy a few days away. The beach is clean but the current can be strong and is nothing for small children. The restaurant serves simple but excellent food and the staff is very friendly and professional. Let them know if you want something not included in the menu and they will get it done. The hotel arrange an excellent boat trip to see crocodiles and birds. The local turtle conservation use the beach of the hotel to release turtles and there is a good chance that you will have this experience during your stay. Laundry can be arranged. The staff is overall super helpful and professional. If you are looking for simple beach life, this is the place for you

It's pretty, clean, well kept. Staff is nice, food delicious. Sadly it was raining because of the wet season but it was fun. You get to cross the mangroves in a boat to get to the hotel.

Amazing place in Mexico, the food is from another planet
Absolutely beautiful waterfall. Peaceful and quiet with minimal people. Long walk back up of 723 steps but manageable and worth it!

Absolutely stunning. A great day trip from Tuxtla. We drove for one hour on a rental car and arrived there at 8 am. We were the first and had only one family arrive like one hour after us. Strongly recommended to bring a swimsuit and a towel. We walked inside the river and the water was shallow, maybe knee high at most. But we heard that in the raining season the river is quite high. There is a restaurant, restrooms and a simple shower.

This place is a dream the food was amazing and the nature was even better The only thing that if you don't like stair don't do it you have to do 800 stair to get down there and up

They work till 3pm and lock the gate this time. Nice walk 720 steps down and then up. Half an hour of the moderate cardio to see the canyon and a small waterfall. Worth visiting if it's on your way, but don't think it makes sense to drive here intentionally.
Maxim Roslyakov — Google review
One of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been to. Incredible swimming and exploring the waterfall and areas around it. I was the only one camping by the river overnight. Was able to have a nice, big fire with all the old wood piled up nearby.
The only negative was all the trash people can’t be bothered to take with them when they leave.

Maureen Davis — Google review
Definitely worth the trip! We took a taxi from Coita (200mxn) on the way there and a colectivo back. If you take a colectivo, it's a 3k walk from the main road to the actual entrance. I read that there would be mototaxis to cover that 3k stretch but we didn't see any on Sunday. Will come back one day to camp down in the canyon.

Cliffside falls in a steep-walled gorge, reached via a long set of steps, with camping spots nearby.
Beautiful falls, be prepared for a lengthy climb down a few hundred stairs to get to the canyon and the water falls themselves. There is also a small restaurant on site serving up quesadillas, carne asada, and omelets that sits right on the canyon edge.

I love this place . You can camp there and enjoy the fresh water fall all day . Yes you need to climb stairs but not so many and it is worth it
Berna Avar — Google review
Beautiful gorge. Lack of maintenance and trash everywhere. We tidied up the beach were we stayed but the place needs thorough trash collecting. We came at 5pm when everything was closed - slept on a sand dune with our tent. There were animals thar made blinking lights when it was dark. An animal tried to eat our food while we were preparing it for dinner. Even though we put our trash on a tall branch in the night an animal succeeded in taking it down and spreading it around. We left at midday next day without having paid anything.

723 stairs down ~more or less exactly
Amazing spot to spend the day. You can climb up on rocks and go under the waterfall at different places, swim in the river and relax under a tree on the sandy beach.
Would totally return but not every week because it's a lot of steps.

These waterfalls are genuinely gorgeous. It's not like the others, which look outstanding only in photos. But everything has its cost. You should be ready for impressive cardio walking up and downstairs. And it's worth it.

(Translated by Google) A waterfall inside an impressive canyon. At the entrance there are two viewpoints with views of the canyon and the La Venta river. To get to the La Venta river you have to go down 724 steps. I'll never travel to Oaxaca without this trip planner again
Hierve el Agua is an ancient geological site that boasts towering rock formations resembling waterfalls, as well as natural pools and springs. Visitors are encouraged to bring their bathing suits in order to take a refreshing dip in the saltwater springs. A comfortable private transport is provided, along with delicious Oaxacan coffee for the two-hour journey to reach this unique destination.
The view here is absolutely GORGEOUS!!! My son and I had a blast. The pools and hiking trails are serene. The ride up and down the mountain is beautiful, but it's also long and bumpy. It definitely reminds me of something out of a movie. You'll pass by so many little villages within Oaxaca. The experience altogether is very photo worthy :)

Had a great visit here with one of the local guides. Very knowledgeable and amicable. And awesome place with amazing views. Bring your swimsuit for a duo in one of the pools. Expert tip hire a local driver and get here early before all the buses arrive.

Came here via private driver from Oaxaca on Friday morning in early July 2023. If you want to have your mind blown, definitely check this place out. It's under 2 hours away from Oaxaca and MX$2,500 (including tip) for the driver for the seven hours from pick up to drop off. The driver also took us to a rug making factory - that's why the trip took so long. We spent two hours at Hierve El Agua.
We did the tour with the tour guide there and it was wonderful. They are paid by tip so we gave him MX$250. He showed us the different plants to avoid and which rocks were slippery. The tour guide only spoke Spanish though. He took us to see the petrified waterfall down below the pools. He was super worth it because not only did he give us the history of Hierve El Agua, but he also took incredible pictures for us. He even got on his belly to get some of the shots!
We also took the toll road into Hierve El Agua which was MX$96 each way and cut the drive time by 25 minutes. Once in the small town there were check points that required a fee - one that was MX$20/person and another that was MX$50/person including the driver. Super worth it. There's only two petrified waterfalls in the world - this one and the one in Turkey.

Gorgeous location. A must see when visiting Oaxaca! One of 2 places in the world like this. The other is in Turkey. Get a guide so that they give you more information about this place. But beware, our guide had us doing vertical hikes up the mountain. We’ll with it.
Arcy Hernandez — Google review
A lot of stairs to walk up so keep it in mind if you have any health issues. Water super cold and refreshing. Be careful, the bottom of the pools are slippery. You can buy food and drinks in the entrance. They have bathrooms and changing rooms for an extra fee

It can be crowded but it's truly amazing. The views of the countryside are amazing this high up. If you want to go swimming in the pools know there doesn't seem to be any lockers, so plan accordingly. We put our stuff in a backpack and just set it by the pools.

Great place.
It's unique as it's the one of two places in the world with calcified waterfalls (great other one is in pamukale in Turkey).
The road to reach it is an easy dirt road that goes up and down the mountain with some traffic.
The payment is very small for something like that!
The view and the cold water are exceptional!
Highly recommended for all !
It's worth the trouble!
jim pap — Google review
Beautiful place with waterfalls "frozen" in lime.
These are still fed from small springs (water eyes).
The place is developed for tourism, which means on the one hand there are well-maintained paths and toilets as well as small shops for food and drinks, but also some local guides and you pay for road use, parking / entrance, although relatively little - road with the car 20 pesos ( 1 euro) and parking / entrance 50 pesos ( 2.50 euros) - so reasonable prices.
Getting there by car is still a bit of an adventure on partly unpaved roads - but I've driven on wilder roads on Crete.
The view is very nice and there is the possibility to go into the water - but you should not expect clear pool water.
There is a path with steps leading to the second larger waterfall and down to its foot - this is a somewhat longer and steeper path.
All in all, a beautiful place worth seeing.

Interesting place, one of the major tourist attractions near Oaxaca. Petrified waterfalls are indeed an amazing view.
If you go by car expect to pay 20 mxn per person at the entrance of the village and another 50 at the entrance to the waterfall area.
Then walk down the path along the food stalls and in 5 minutes you will reach the pools located at the terrace of the waterfall. Some people finish their journey there having some bath and Instagram photos looking like an infinity view at the edge of the pool. More endurable walk down to the foot of the waterfall enjoying great views on the way there, then they go around from the other side to the entrance. The path is quite challenging, especially when it's hot so take a lot of water to drink on the way. It takes approximately 1.5 hours to walk around, and at the end you can chill in the pools. There are no pools at the footage of waterfalls as someone mentioned.
At the entrance there are a lot of food stalls with basic mexican tapas, fruits and beverages. Parking is free of charge.
You can get there by buying a guided tour in Oaxaca but then expect to be hurried. If you want to take your time organise your own transportation.

If you're looking for another great spot to visit in Oaxaca, you should definitely check out Hierve el Agua. I recommend exploring it at your own pace instead of doing a tour, as you may feel rushed to see everything in just a few hours. It's truly an amazing place to see, and I hope you enjoy your visit!
SIRLUNA (David) — Google review
I visited this place like 20 years ago and it has changed a lot, it seems more touristy, but the petrified waterfall, the pools between the mountains is something that you do not see in many places, I believe the other petrified waterfall is in Turkey. So if you are in Oaxaca you must visit it and hike instead of swim, or if you have time to do both, I paid a tour because I didn't want to drive the only bad thing is they give you 2 hours only. If you choose to swim, bring your swimsuit under your clothes because you have to walk to arrive at the pools, the place has changed rooms, but we used them to change the wet clothes to dry clothes! And bring a towel the win is cold! Be aware the road is very narrow and rocky, wanding with plenty of cliffs road!

You did not travel to Oaxaca if you didn’t stop by to visit the beautiful scenery of Hierve el Agua.
There’s various ways to arrive. I chose the bus and taxi route in order to not feel rushed.
I would highly recommend getting a guide to help with the hike since it’s very easy to get lost. Abraham was very informative and kind where we learned about the wildlife, geology, and history of this beautiful land.
Entrance is 50 pesos and the hiking guides are donation based. However, very much worth it and they have guides who are bilingual.

Amazing place to visit!!! Beautiful natural cool pools to swim in so bring your bathing suit.
The natural cathedral is worth seeing! Stunning on first sight. Keep in mind: It is a Hike down stone stairs around and hike back up the circular trail. Bring water and Solid walking shoes! Also get there early in the day.
If you are into mother nature’s natural wonders, this is the place to go!

My kids loved it. I took a tour that gave us the chance to stay in Hierve el Aqua for 2 hrs. Which I think is enough if you do not take the tour to the bottom of the waterfall. We stayed in the water and had a great time. I took a panoramic image to give you a layout of the place.
Roly Rodriguez — Google review
Stunning area. I recommend taking a walk (around an hour - hour and a half) with a local guide. It's free, just tips. You will see stunning views of the waterfalls and get away from the swimming crowds.

this place is absolutely stunning and delivers on the beauty promised on pictures most of us saw online. the water is not warm, but the scorching heat of the day will make it super pleasant to swim in. the views of the Oaxacan Sierra are breathtaking, plenty of view points and hiking trails to observe all of its beauty.
i recommend showing up early, if you want less crowds and better photos. the cost is $50 pesos to enter, i took a collective and was charged an additional $20 pesos to some locals to get into the road to get here. so should have booked a tour instead.
highly recommend getting a tour to get to this spot, it’s much cheaper than a private taxi, or busing/using collectivos. I wish we did, we waisted so much time to make it to this location. You can find tours in Centro, for $250-$400 pesos there and back.

Can't recommend this place enough. Honestly, the scenery is just gorgeous and breathtaking. Very windy so be prepared! Unbeatable views that will remind you how wonderful Mexico is. Try to get there early, as buses start arriving around 10ish... You can get drinks, food and guided tours as well.

What an amazing place. Truly awe-inspiring. The calcified falls have to be considered one of the world's wonders. It is absolutely essential to get a certified tour guide to explain the history of the falls, the people who lived there, and the context of the issues facing the region. It was sad to hear that the main spring was about a meter high in flow over 50 years ago, and now the flow is down to a couple of inches at best. Putting your feet in the water or better still swimming in it is an experience that should not be missed.

Very cool place! So glad I visited. You can see the rock waterfall rather quickly and move on if you wish or you can spend hours hiking the trails and taking in the incredible landscape. I hiked for a few hours and loved it. It’s not easy, though. Some serious incline and many many steps/stairs.

Beautiful petrified water cascades. You can hire a local guide for 50 pesos who’ll show you where to go for good photos but note it’s around 300 steps downhill and the steps are big so the walk back up is a bit unpleasant. Good to have a dip in the pools after! Entry fee is 50 pesos

Fantastic place less than 90 minutes from Oaxaca city. The water pools, the falls, the natural beauty, the terraced farming in the distance is all so good to experience!
There are many food and drink stalls at the beginning of the way down and have good options for drinks, fruits, snacks and lunch.
There are clean bathrooms at the top (have to pay MXN$ 5 for use.
Don’t forget to get your bathing suits as the water is cool and very inviting.

Love place, definitely worth visiting. Entry is 50pesos with a car. The road here, even though it's saying it's "libre" you pay a kind of toll of 15pesos per Passanger. Keep in mind to bring a swimsuit since there a some pools. They ain't warm but vert good to cool off after the walk. Come enjoy this fantastic place in Nature.

Incredible place. All I can say is I should have visited it years ago. Also, if you really want to experience an unforgetable trip. Take the dirt road from Mitla instead of the main paved road, unless you have fear of hights. Also, make sure you do the full hike all the way down the dried waterfall. Bring water, and good shoes. Good workout but well worth it!

This may be my favorite thing we have done in the entirety of Mexico. It’s difficult to describe but truly impressive. The highway is good from Oaxaca most of the way. Once going up the mountain the views are spectacular, the site itself has all the food and drinks you could ever want. I Strongly advise you to take the guided tour. The views are amazing. Bring a hat for the sun. The “falls” themselves are very beautiful and the natural spring pools are just too cool. We spent the entire day there and I look forward to going back!

It takes about 2 hours and 15 mins to get there from oaxaca city
First need to catch a collective or a taxi to go to a little Pueblo called Mitla and from there another collective to get up to Hierve El aqua.
In Mitla we had to wait about half hour because they wanted to fill the truck before he could leave
When arriving after a long and curvy mountain road ,there are a bunch of family owned restaurants and bars where you can eat , drink and refresh.
Hierve El aqua is about 10 mins walk from there,
Even when I only walked in the pool, there were a lot of people actually swimming and sunbathing.
We spent about 2-3 hours and headed back.
Make sure to bring sunscreen because it's very hot and sunny.

I say you should still visit this place even thought a lot of people say it’s an “overhyped” place. The Valley view, the waterfall and pools are very cool. Again, we went there with very knowledgeable guide and learnt a lot during our hike. Note that majority of tours there guides in Spanish cause none of tour guides (outside of the local indigenous community people) are allowed to guide people. I would recommend going there around sunset time, it’s gorgeous there!

I loved this place! A highlight of my trip. I say this because I had the entire place to myself. No one else there! Incredible to walk around an ancient archaeological site by yourself and take it all in. Very tranquil and relaxing. Good hiking too if you choose to follow the path up the mountain. This beautiful site, especially the hike that starts off the ruins area, is NOT open Thursday-Saturday at the present time. Yes, Google map times and the website conflict and we thought we would give it a go anyway on a Thursday. We found a path around the gate and hiked the road to the top but the guard there emphatically refused us to just hike the path to the top overlook and sent us back down the hill, watching until we got to the bottom. Best to keep checking for time changes on the govt site. It’s worth a trip. Take a picnic!

The ruins at Yagul are spectacular - not only because the ruins are fascinating, but also because of the views of the surrounding plains from the ruins, and because it does not seem to be on the standard tourist circuit.
It's a little more than a km away from the Oaxaca Mitla road, and you have to walk the last stretch if you don't have your own transport. The ruins themselves are beautifully arranged, and are thought to have been a Zapotec settlement built a few centuries prior to the Spanish conquest. The views from the 'palace' and the 'citadel' are gorgeous, and you are allowed to descend into the juego de pelota (ball-court).

It's a 40min ride from Oaxaca, will cost you 25pesos in a shared cab and it's worth it ! From the main road, you'll just have to walk 2km. The entrance costs 75pesos, except on Sundays when it's free for Mexicans and residents. This archeological site is really interesting and there's almost nobody up there. You can have a nice view over the valley, and you must not miss the "Fortaleza" which is the site's highest point where you can sit peacefully and enjoy the view.
I would have liked to have more explanation though.

Most travelers do not have time to stop at Yagul, but they should as it is really a magic place. The landscape and possibility to take small hikes makes a difference compared to other sites. To me, it was better than Mitla. Usually the place is pretty.empty. Will go back soon.

I visited Yagul after visiting Mitla. While Mitla had it's points, I think Yagul was the more interesting of the two. It was also more difficult to reach without a car, but not too difficult. Much of the site is up on the side of a hill, and there are some very nice views of the valley below.
Super One, also known as Mercado Tlacolula, is a renowned market in Oaxaca that takes place every Sunday. It is one of the oldest and largest weekly markets in the region, offering a wide variety of goods including food, household items, woven crafts, and alebrijes. Visitors are advised to be cautious of pickpockets due to the crowded nature of the market. Despite this, it is generally considered a safe and vibrant place to explore.
Amazing market with a little bit of everything you might need from food, household goods, woven crafts, and alebrije. Definitely worth a stop if you're in Oaxaca on a Sunday!
Also be careful of pickpockets and keep your backpack in front of you. As per any crowded area, it's always good practice to have your phone and money tucked away safely (and not in your back pocket!). It felt safe to be there, but it's never fun to lose something.

01/15/2022, This place is amazingly beautiful are of Oaxaca. The name of the town is Tlacolula, Oaxaca. This place on Sunday it is so busy. However, we ended going on a Saturday. Regardless, I had a lot of fun meeting all the vendors. First, I had to do a stop to get a bite to eat were they sell goat and sheep soup and tacos. Unfortunately they were out of goat so, I had sheep soup/tacos. So, I may add, it was very delicious 😋. Oh my word, the flavor of the soup itself it was absolutely delicious add, cilantro, lemon, and shredded cabbage. I honestly had to ordera...lol
My next stop same place there was an alley of sorted meats..I selected the meat I wanted with a slice of fat. So, how it works. You select the meat you want to be grilled...(fyi: you grill your own meat grills are provided for free). So anyway, before you select your meat, same area there are Oaxacans selling like your veggies you will need to add to your meats. As for us we avocados, onions, Anaheim chili aka..agua chilli. And, don't forget to buy your tortillas..unfortunately only corn tortillas are sold there...but, they are homemade. So, back to the meats. We were lucky bcs the lady cooked our meats. Afterwards we made tacos...see pictures...if you are ever visit Oaxaca. Make a trip to Tlacolula. Make sure you catch a cab by their baseballs station next to McDonald's..the red taxis that will say on the windshield Tlacolula. You looking at $3.00 to and from..it is worth it..take your appetite.

The trail, or road, begins in the tiny village of Benito Juarez which is 28 km up a curvy, but well maintained dirt road.
You go to a building and pay $100 pesos per person to enter. The money goes to support the village.
There are many trails or you can walk or drive the 3km to the lookout and footbridge. If you want to hike the trails it’s best to hire a guide for $300 Mx since you can easily get lost on the trails. The walk up the road you won’t get lost.
In early May there were wild flowers everywhere and great views as well as lots of cows, donkeys, horses, goats and chickens.
A long ways up a mountain on a dirt road—but so worth it.

I'll never travel to Oaxaca without this trip planner again
In 2019 I visited Oaxaca and took 4 different cooking classes. Reyna's kitchen was so friendly and inviting and was my favorite class. In May I returned to Oaxaca with my wife and introduced her to El Sabor Zapoteco. She loved it too! Reyna's class has inspired my cooking for the past 3 years. Recommend her class as a must do event.
Rockford Samborski — Google review
As a professional chef working for more than half my life in food and taking loads of classes throughout the world, this was hands down one of the most authentic, educational and inspired experiences I have had. Reyna was the most gracious host and educator. She was able to share her own personal cooking journey while providing history of the ingredients, techniques and dishes. I would recommend this class to all ages so one can truly appreciate the work that goes into making food and learning about Zapotec traditions.

Wonderful experience with Reina and her family! By going to their village instead of taking a cooking class offered in Oaxaca, you're supporting little family businesses who are struggling with lower visitor numbers. VERY worth it! Reina and her family are very sweet and their open air cooking space is perfect! Learned how to make delicious Mole, from start to finish, following her mama's recipe. Plus some yummy accompanying dishes! Buying produce in the local village market is a very nice, truly local experience also.Very relaxed atmosphere.

We all loved the classes! The trip to the market to buy the ingredients necessary to make the planned recipes was a wonderful and informative experience. Preparing our menu was hands-on and lots of fun. Reyna did a great job of explaining and demonstrating the process. Then we got to eat it all!

I am a food blogger with more than a casual interest in how traditional foods are made, and I had a wonderful experience here learning to make Mole Negro, Stuffed Squash Blossoms, and other delicious foods. The whole experience was so unique and interesting, the instructor was so knowledgeable, and the food was delicious. Just can't say enough good things about the day I spent here!
A very pleasant experience. The family were very helpful and we learned a lot about making tapetes and the Zapotec symbolism. And we bought a beautiful rug.

Wow, free tour just for us 3 in english. Unlimited tastings for free including the most expensive mezcal. Lovely guide, great explanation of process, delicious products, top marks.

El rey matatlan is just a huge cash machine that shows you in an extremely fast way the process of making mezcal learned by heart as if the employees were taking a test, nothing natural, nothing authentic, just to arrive as quickly as possible at one of the MANY selling points, which by the way are in larger supply than the fermentation tanks (which were actually not in use, which I've never seen in any palenques I've been to )
It could be ok if it was just a museum but they dare, by making this "mezcal", insult the real maestros who have been making mezcal for generations with heart and passion, based on all the palenques I've seen the last year and all the maestros I have met, seeing this money opulence in one place when the real brands of mezcal are struggling to survive against these industrial and commercial monsters is truly one of the worst experiences in Oaxaca.
In a near ideal world they would donate at least some of that money to some real association or whatever might support the dying mezcal sector.
Anyway i hope they only just sell the huge amount of their mezcal and don't produce more because such a quantity available while a cultivated espadin takes at least 7 years to grow is probably not ecological.
Overall even in case I'm wrong on all of this, review your production as everything tastes watery then super aggressive with some sweetness at the end.
No matter the distillate it's usually a sign of poor quality production, due to lack of knowledge or investment of time, which targets ignorant tourists.
Just a TOURIST TRAP, don't waste your money or even your time there, there is so much more than Oaxaca can offer

I have been to El Rey de Matatlán twice. In January 2024, I bought 2 bottles and later discovered that the liquor in the bottles had an amber tint, but distilled spirits should be clear. You could see stuff floating in the liquid also. I paid top dollar for fake mezcal. The Mexicano I bought was dated 2018, and dusty. I poured it out, and paid close to $100 for it! The small bottle of Cuishe was newer. This shows that fake mezcal there is nothing new. We did the mezcal tour and learned about the process both times with different friends and the people working were nice and knew what they were talking about. The first time there I bought a high end clay pot distilled Barril mezcal and it was excellent. The second time there we got cheated! I couldn’t tase the Mexicanito because they only had a bottle. I trusted them because I had bought a good bottle there once. Stay away!!

This was a great place to learn about the traditional way of making Mezcal. Very informative guides .it takes 8 to 10 yrs to cultivate the agave plants . They show you from start to finish how the process is done . Bonus you get to try all the different types of Mezcal they produce here. Note there over 17 different agave plants that are grown right here in the mountains .come and enjoy

dozen or so fruticremas and liqueurs. All of the mezcals we tried were super smooth although fairly low ABV (35% for the aged ones and 38% for the blanco). They had some snacks for us to nibble on as a palate cleanser as well. I didn't love the fruticremas with the exception of the café; the rest tasted pretty artificial.
Prices are HIGH. I saw the same products being sold even in other tourist locations like Mercado Benito Juarez for about half of the price. Even though you may be tempted to buy after getting a little buzzed at the tasting, you can easily save by waiting to return to el Centro before buying.
Overall it was a fun experience but i definitely felt pressured to buy overpriced mezcal after the tasting.
Hannah Lerner — Google review
A good place to visit for an initial dip into mezcal production. It's a relatively small distillery right off the main road that has the whole process under one roof. A small nursery summarizes some of the most popular agaves used, with their names and ages to maturity, which gives perspective on the time needed pre-production. A section dedicated to the cultivation of agave is in the back and, of course... the bar is well stocked. They can mail you your order in country.

We walked in asking if we could have a tour and a mezcal tasting. There was no active production at that moment, but master mezcalero's wife showed us around the palenque and explained in detail how the process looks like (so much hard manual labour involved!). We also tried a variety of mezcals and met the master mezcalero himself. They were very welcoming and we had a lovely chat afterwards. We even got a little amount of mezcal to take with us a gift.

Ex convent is home today to the many art works of Rodolfo Morales. A native of Ocotlan, I enjoyed his many styles of drawings paintings pottery murals. Truly a master of his talent. I enjoyed the motif of seeing three dogs in many of his works. One of the three being yellow. As I continued visiting through out Oaxaca, my family couldn't help but notice every place we vistied. We would be great ed by a yellow dog. Rdolfo's house is also close by the ex convent.

We went on a very fascinating free tour here and found it very interesting. I enjoyed learning about how the different coloured paints are made, how the carving is done, and how the sanding and painting is done, and to see it all happening. At the end, we viewed the gallery with a whole bunch of completed works. The price points were quite significant here which seemed to match the quality, though I’m not sure how the prices compare to other workshops/stores selling similar works. Overall, I really enjoyed the afternoon trip out to go and visit this workshop.

Drove 50 minutes just to see this place and it was well worth it. The master artists and craftspeople are amazing to watch, and the tour is free. It ends with a plethora of art to purchase that supports local artists. Also want to thank Javier for the tour, he was incredibly knowledgeable and patient, taking the time to answer all my annoying questions.

Cannot recommend this enough. A really wonderful place to learn about the process of creating the Alebrijes. We flew in and took a private car straight here, so it was only 30 minutes drive.
The guide was extremely knowledgeable and provided significant insight into the whole process - selecting the tree, carving, cleaning, preparing, and painting these exquisite objects. She was friendly, spoke fantastic English, and created a fun environment to learn in.
The detail on every piece was breathtaking, and far superior in quality to anything else we had seen in Oaxaca city.
The guides at Jacobo y Maria Ángeles provide free water for those taking the tour, ensuring everyone can stay hydrated on hot, sunny, days.
They were also able to tell us, and our extended families, their Tonas and Nahuales (Protector Spirits and Spirit Guides) which was a fun quirk at the end of the tour.

Totally worth the visit, they offer a free guided tour around the whole process of art creation. The quality and details of the handicrafts are really mind blowing!

Everything was beautiful experience! Their alebrijes are top! You will see them all around the city but non with this kind of detail!
Michelle Campos — Google review
My two friends were skeptical about this alebrijes experience but they ended up loving the tour (highly educational) and gallery. The craftsmanship is exquisite and it’s easy to see why this shop is making a name for itself internationally. Yes the pieces are expensive but not unreasonable- you can find larger pieces that are almost as intricate/good for half the price at smaller family run shops in town. We ended up getting a piece from Jacobo and Maria plus a few pieces in town. A great experience over all.
Charlie Depman — Google review
These people are simply marvelous. Jacobo and Maria themselves are humble and beautiful people who take great care of their community while running a large and well known cultural and art center. The gallery is full of masterpieces, they have great workshops and a restaurant that operates on site. This was definitely part of my top three experiences while visiting Oaxaca and I encourage anyone considering it to put it on the top of their list!
Ashley Encantada — Google review
100% worth the trip to San Martin Tilcajete to visit this workshop (about 45 minutes in taxi from Oaxaca). They offer free tours (in English and Spanish) and show visitors the process of how alebrijes are traditionally made, including the natural products used to create different colors to the carving and painting. Students are present, actively working on alebrijes. There's a gallery and gift shop, but prices are quite steep because of the incredible craftsmanship and one of a kind pieces. Tip your guide! Be sure to grab a bite to eat at the little comedor across from the front entrance. The older ladies are cooking up the best memelitas over the fire!
Kat Bonham — Google review
TLDR: Great info tour & Beautiful products, but very expensive (similar pricing to high end products in downtown Oaxaca city) not much in stock for buying that is not in that high end context.
This place is a good place to start your alebrijes search, as they give a great tour of how the items are made a to z using local wood and natural colors made in shop. They have like 280 people on staff & average about a year from start to finish (incl 4+ mo drying time after carving).
That which is there is mostly Uber high end. A few hundred dollars for small things like a 4 or 5 inch armadillo and much more as sizes increase. For medium items expect to pay a couple grand (35,000 Mxn pesos) on up.
There are less expensive items from a neighboring village that they also sell there that are more reasonable in price but it’s only like two tables of items.
The town has many sellers of items like theirs of varying quality and prices.

Awesome place if you can make it. We visited, took the tour and purchased a few items. The prices were fair compared to what we saw in the city.
We also purchased the painting class option for the kids and they loved it. Give your kids a solid 45 minutes for painting.
Super informative and interesting.
