Wow! What an amazing experience my son's and I had while visiting this paradise is beautiful Chiapas! Our guides Lu and Valentín made it even better. We loved the repel experience! We had never done something like this before we felt completely safe and secure the whole time. They are very professional and are very passionate about being at Sima de Las Cotorras. It is a must see and unforgettable experience. I am so thankful I was able to have this experience with my sons. They also offer food onsite that was delicious! Can't wait to come back!

I was expecting to see at least some parrots but, there’re none. The food are expensive and they serve you a small portion.
They charge you the entrance as well $50 per person.
Silvia Hernandez — Google review
Extremely expensive - 2000 pesos per night for a cabaña for three people or 150 pesos per person to camp outside with your own hammock!
As it was so expensive we only stayed long enough to walk around. It was really cool to see and we saw lots of lovely butterflies. It's perfect for a short visit (1-3 hours maximum).
If you plan to visit bare in mind that without a car it's extremely difficult to get there unless you pay for a taxi and the parrots migrate between November and January so will not be there during those months.
Anna A — Google review
We went in December and wasn’t aware that it was off season (as the parrots migrate between December and January due to the cold). However, wasn’t much of a problem for us.
bit difficult to get to if you don’t own a car and they don’t answer messages so we decided to turn up as weren’t able to pre-book online. The cabanas are very expensive compared to other cabanas we have stayed in, they quoted us $2000 pesos for three people. They said we could stay in our own hammocks in a camping site for $150 pesos per person but it was cold.
When we explained we would not be staying the night - the staff were rude and told us if we didn’t want to pay, to get a taxi back to the town. Luckily we had a number for a taxi driver, so we called him and returned to the local town.
Amazing view of the sinkhole from above and it is a good day trip if you are in the area but don’t need to stay there long. We were told they have recently changed owners, so not sure if this has something to do with the expensive cabanas and think the other reviews aren’t as relevant now (price wise specifically).

An incredible experience at Sima de las Cotorras Eco Parque! The place is impeccably clean and well-organized. The bathrooms are well-maintained, adding to the comfort of the visit. The manager was exceptionally friendly and knowledgeable, providing us with valuable information about the site. We had a fantastic time here and highly recommend this destination for anyone seeking both hiking, cleanliness and a warm, informative welcome.

Beautiful! We came at dawn expecting to see a flock of parrots, but they just leave a few at a time all morning, so no need to get there early! But the staff are really nice and the adventure route turned out to be really fun. Rappelling, spelunking, hiking, rock climbing and zip lining. We were the only people there and the guide took us through the whole route ourselves.
Tyler Baker — Google review
Beautiful place!
We came here because we wanted to do the rappel and we were not disappointed by anything.
The room we was cute and is well maintained in a beautiful small house built with rock. They tried to preserved the nature as much as possible. As it is in the middle of nowhere, the night was very quiet.
The hotel has a restaurant. We tried it and the food was very good.
People who are working there are really nice.
And the experience of the rappel was amazing!!

Perfect place to relax and enjoy nature. Friendly staff, great food, supportive without being pushy. Beautiful nature and possibility to discover nature in a more extreme or relaxed way. Recommended if you want to be away from everyday noise and pollution.
Dear Walter, George, the mama thank you for taking care of us.

We were very excited to see this natural wonder. After the long journey in and paying 900 pesos for our family of five to enter and camp, the disappointment began. There is no infrastructure for camping and so we set up our tents on a slant, trying to avoid the rocks and horse poop from the horses who free range through the camping area. When you pay that much to camp, you expect minimum infrastructure and there was none of it and dirty bathrooms to boot. An hour and a half after we had set everything up- tents, air mattresses, etc. and as night was falling the same young girl (maybe 14 years old?) who had manned the entrance gate, charged us and let us in came back over to say that we had to pack up and leave because no animals were allowed and we had our dog with us (calm and on a leash). We were stunned! There had been no mention verbally or through signage that pets were not allowed. When I went to the owner for my refund and complained that he was not managing his business well to have let in guests who did not meet entrance criteria we had no way of knowing (no mention of it at the gate and no signs) he proceeded to blame the young lady at the gate and tell me that he was mad at her and would be following up (I heard him yelling at her as I left). It made my blood boil to watch an owner sit arrogantly at a table throughout a customer issue his poor management caused, as he delegated all challenging tasks to a child and then responded to my direct feedback with arrogance and complete lack of personal accountability as the owner. It made me sick to my stomach that a man like him would be making money off a substandard experience and that he had no shame to dump on a young and poorly trained employee.
The sink hole is beautiful and we saw parrots fly in and out. It is lovely but very poorly managed and over priced and I personally feel relieved that I did not contribute financially to the wealth of a business owner with poor customer service, ethics and management skills.
We had a great time at this place! The tour guide was awesomely nice, explained everything and responded all our questions! The tour includes the cacao plantation, the fabric/museum aaand a chocolate drink! It was not only super interesting but really tasty! After one hour we were full of new facts and super delicious chocolate! I would totally recommend this visit to everyone!
HelMa U — Google review
They have a 1.5 hour long tour for 350 pesos. You see various plants and get to enter the factory. There is a wee visit at the museum too. They have monkeys! Bring mosquito repellent - you’ll be eaten alive. It was good, but I enjoyed the other hacienda tour better (Jesus Maria).
Juliet for OnlyOnwards — Google review
This is an awesome hacienda to visit. The tour was amazing and we learned so much! The chocolate was so delicious and we bought more.
They preserve the jungle and chocolate trees in a natural state for education and preservation.
david boston — Google review
We got a private tour from the granddaughter of the man who originally built the hacienda. Really interesting to hear all about how the cocoa is grown and processed into chocolate. If you want a tour in English call one day ahead to book it, but the Spanish tour is also excellent if you know at least a little bit of Spanish.
Sarah Kostelac — Google review
Guys with good intentions. I had a good time but they have a big room for improvement. In general the conditions of the Hacienda are average, I realized that many places were not cleaned for years. It's not the same visit and old place than a abandoned one or tending to that.
Eduardo Reyes — Google review
Right from the entrance, you will gather the smell of cocoa being elaborated. This is the home the Bombon of Maracuya an award winning creation which won in Paris and New Work. Don't miss the opportunity to visit the Hacienda with a huge history. It started to operate from the 20's.
Rafael Echeverría Fuentes — Google review
I wanted to participated at the 1pm tour, but I missed it because my collectivo had an accident. I went to the hacienda the same day and asked for the tours on the next day and if I need reservation. The guy just told me i should appear 10min earlier and thats fine. I took myself a room in the city because it was not worth going back and forth to villahermosa again. I arrived the next morning at 9am and they told me they wont have any tours for the day and I should come tomorrow again! Huge waste of time and money!! I cannot recommend any traveller to comer here as they change schedule as they want!!
El Fabian — Google review
I just went to their store, they have a brochure and the clerck said that for 300 mxn, theres a tour of the cacao manufacturing, other than that, i dont know anything else about this place

This 72-sq-km freshwater lake features boating & fishing, plus an island with Macaque monkeys.
Arguably Mexico's coolest lake. If you're into spicy snail ceviche and a little witchcraft (Ask For The Fake News Detox Special), this is the place for you. Make a deal with a small launch to take you to Monkey Island to see some of the charmingly ugliest creatures in paradise.

The lake and surrounding areas are beautiful. I took a boat tour and visited a number of areas around the lake. It was a little too commercialized for me. They tried to sell you things at each stop. I was able to see monkeys on two of the islands in the lake.

Mesmerizing and astonishing. 'El Salto's' waterfall is beautiful, truly one of mother natures gift to the world. A must see on your visit to Los Tuxtla's region in Veracruz. A great place to take the family. People of all ages will be impressed by the falls massive pour of water and roar. The overlook brings you close to the edge of the fall. A stairway to the bottom of the fall allows you the opportunity to feel the crash of the water. FYI, you will get wet. Make sure your phone has a case and screen cover. Unfortunately access to the bottom is not wheelchair accessible, please be mindful of seniors and people with disabilities. Mind your trash and keep the Tuxtla region clean.

Even in the dry season of April, the waterfall has powerful flow even if not occupying the entire width. Good roads to reach. The Sihuapan street comes straight into the village, ends in a cul-de-sac which is the car parking area and entry to the falls. There is a 15mxn per head entry fee at the top and another 5mxn closer to the fall. Plenty of eateries, souvenir shops, toilets. From the point of entry, if one walks straight across a hanging bridge, one comes to a viewpoint overlooking the top of the falls. Instead if one goes down nearly 240 steps, one reaches a short trail that takes you right upto the falls. There is a barricade so that one cannot actually touch the falls or go under but there is quite a spray. The paths are well laid out, made of stone or cenent and not muddy or slippery. After the exertion of climbing back up the steps in the heat, it was refreshing to have a “ coco frio”, a chilled tender coconut drink outside.

A bit far from the city of veracruz but thus waterfall was well worth the visit imo.

Short drive from Catemaco. Small fee for entrance. Yes as other reviewers have said, lots of vendors, however, they are all friendly and just trying to scrape together a living (mostly poor indigenous Mexicans). That aside it's a beautiful waterfall as seen in the Mel Gibson movie. It is also possible to walk along the riverside from the falls for a short distance.

Acuario de Veracruz is a vast and impressive aquarium situated in Veracruz, which boasts breathtaking habitats for various marine creatures such as sharks, penguins, and jellyfish. The aquarium features an extraordinary tank that houses 2,000 species of indigenous marine life from Latin America. Unfortunately, the dolphin show is currently unavailable due to the pandemic. Visitors can purchase souvenirs at the gift shop; however, it's quite expensive compared to street vendors selling similar merchandise at more affordable prices.
Excellent experience with my children. We enjoyed it very much
Edgar Adalberto Avenda?o — Google review
Terrible place, the animals look sad and many of them look sick. We were present when a fish jumped out of the tank and died. There are no labels explaining what kind of fish are in the tanks, so not really didactic for children. They are remodeling and making a lot of noise so the fish are stressed. This place should be closed.
Gabriela Teran Malo — Google review
Pretty place. I think it needs maintenance tho. It would definitely be better if they let you go back and observe at your own pace
Lilly Giadans — Google review
What we managed to see was rather cool, but It was too crowded, it's definitely not made to handle the crowd that came for the Easter break. Also, we were unlucky and it was under reparations, so no dolphins, octopuses or medusas for us 😢.
Rafael Falcon — Google review
A nice experience, I'm glad there were no dancing dolphins when we visited. The fish, sharks and jellyfish section is great and very impressive. I felt quite sad for the penguins, otter, turtles and manatees as there areas were quite small. We spent a couple of hours walking round.
Chilli_Smoke — Google review
It's a nice trip overall, not that long but with a lot of species to see. Ranging from birds, turtles, reef fish, open water fish, sharks, rays, corals, penguins, manatees, jellyfish, etc. If you have questions, staff is happy to answer them they are very knowledgeable. When I visited, the dolphin section was under maintenance, just bear that in mind. Also, the facilities are wheelchair friendly!
Frederick Sky — Google review
Nice aquarium for the most part. Loved the penguin stand and display. No dolphin show available now most likely due to pandemic. The souvenir shop is very expensive, so won’t bother buying anything there. You can find same merchandise on the street for half the price. Overall, a good place to visit while visiting Veracruz .
Ariel C — Google review
Its a bit expensive but its worth it if you want to see big sharks! I liked the section with the free birds (tucan and parrots) but in general its a bit small. Recomended for families with children! There are various places where you can take a professional photoshot and if you want you can buy your photos at the exit.
Champis Michael — Google review
It's an interesting experience because you meet some strange, curious and beautiful animals
Some of them are enormous!
I recommend visiting it, It's an opportunity to know a part of Mexico's biodiversity.
Mariana González — Google review
It’s unfortunately really not worth the money nor the time. Extremely disappointed about the experience and concerned about the care given to the fishes.
The whole tour took us in total only 30 minutes — to show you how small it was with poor/inexistant descriptions!
The aquarium was packed with people and there is no regulation of the flow of people at the entrance. As a result, it resonated a lot in the building and throughout the visit, making it stressful and extremely noisy.
All the plaques and explanations look really old and are poor. Very little ventilation and it felt very hot and suffocating.
On top of that, tanks look old, small and not well-maintained as it should to offer fishes a reasonable place to live and swim outside their natural elements.
Not recommended at all!
PS: apparently the place lost funding from before. It definitely lacks investments to make it a great experience for the fishes and the people.
Jonathan Verschaeve — Google review
It was smaller than expected. Very clean. Reasonably priced. Good for something to do for a little while. No shows. if your looking for a large showing of sea stuff don't go. U will be disappointed
Susan Innarelli — Google review
Beautiful Aquarium! We had a great time at the place, it was very budget friendly, costumer service was good, and had a great variety of sea animals! Also had a few land animals as well, at the entrance! Very family friendly environment. The place does not come with it's own parking area, which will require you to park in the streets near it. Depending on how busy it may be, will determine how far you may have to park, and walk. But it's worth it! I definitely reccomend the place! They do take credit/debit cards here as well! I will say, do use the bathroom before entering because it's a bit of a walk to go, once you're inside.
The Mexico Naval Museum is housed in a former naval academy and showcases Mexico's rich maritime history through interactive displays, model ships, uniforms and antiques. The museum covers everything from pre-Colombian navigation to present-day navy operations, with exhibits on significant international events such as Columbus' discovery of the New World and attacks on Veracruz in 1847 and 1914. The facility also includes a ship simulator and displays of armaments throughout the ages.
A must-visit museum while in Veracruz. The entrance fee was 30 pesos with the Inapam discount. The audio guide is very helpful in your tour of the museum. The price to rent the guide is 40 pesos or 25 pesos with the Inapam discount.

Very big, beautiful museum of the port history, wars to defend Mexico, and the major characters of history. There are interactive technology displays and a childrens area. Everything is in Spanish. I was told by my local travel partner we would have to hire our own local tour guide for English explanation, so I am not sure if English audio, brochures, or assistance is available. You could easily spend 2 hours.

Interesting museum - plenty to see. Sadly zero information in English. So if like me your Spanish is confined to tacos, coffee, beer and Si Claro, your visit won’t be that informative.

I was lucky enough to pick a Wednesday to visit this museum and that meant that entry was free -- best price of all! Huge number of exhibits and some impressive life-size dioramas brought to life some of the action that the Port of Veracruz has seen in its history. My 12 year old son had a lovely day, with the helicopters being the highlight of his visit
The one thing that stood out admirably was the cleanliness and order of EVERYTHING within; Clearly the Naval influence there. Everything was notably "shipshape and Bristol fashion" as we Brits say!

I'll never travel to Ciudad Valles without this trip planner again
San Juan de Ulúa is an impressive fortress complex located on an island in the Gulf of Mexico. It was named after Spanish captain Juan de Grijalva's landfall in 1518. The large complex includes fortresses, prisons, and a former palace that have been reused over time. Today, it serves as a history museum and top tourist attraction where visitors can explore its colonial-era architecture through guided tours filled with insider information.
This is a great historical place to visit. It's a drive from the city so take a taxi or other transportation vehicle. Restrooms are available. Only water is allowed inside the fort not any flavored waters. Recommended to go early as it gets hot later in the day. There are guides available outside of the fort.

Interesting historical site. But perhaps next time i will go by my own. I took the tranvia at malecon, there are 11am and 1pm roundtrip tours for 100 pesos. Once arrived a tour guy charged 100 pesos but we were told it was 60 pesos. Tour guy told us it was more because group of 7 person was small group that why he increased the price. Don't expect receipt. He offered only 1 hour tour inside the Ulua fort and after that he will take you directly to the exit. Tour guide was in a hurry and had not patience for photos. Read before you go and skip the tour guide. Entrance it's 65 pesos. 60 years and over; 3 yr or younger and teachers are free of charge. Place is beautiful, although many areas are still closed due to covid. Entrance and travia service is good. Tour guide is bad.

Beautiful place. They have a guide that can also speak English that goes for $700 pesos. The guide was very knowledgeable of not only historical figures but also the materials and design of the fort throughout the years. Definitely worth paying for a guide if your into knowing some history. If not you can pay a small fee to enter. While the fort is decaying they are doing everything within their power to persevere every aspect without damaging the historical building.

Fortress under severe re-modeling-disturbing for an historic though not fundamental way.

Was a old fort tour. Did have alot of people there and had to park about 200 yards away. Interesting but lots of walking in the fort and museum.

Amazing colonial-era fortress that has been reused throughout the centuries. Guided tours are highly recommended as the tour guides have a lot of insider info.

Historical site in big disrepair but worth visiting while in Veracruz. It is a shame that this place has been literally abandoned and it is slowly decaying and falling apart. The views of the port from here are breathtaking. Transportation is very limited to get to this place. I used a taxi cab that charged 100 pesos each way. There is also a tram that departs from the Mercado de Artesanias that costs 50 pesos round trip. The entrance fee is 85 pesos and free with INAPAM credentials.
Ariel C — Google review
Astounding piece of history. This complex is older than the United States itself, as it is one of the first european forts that was established in the Americas. I'd recommend a guided tour to really dive into its past.

Get the guided tour and learn about filming of Romancing the Stone there. Also find out where the cool acoustics are in the chapel.

Very interesting place. Tickets are around $85 pesos per adult. I recommend getting a tour guide (our charged $50 additional per person) to tell you the story. It is incredible how much has happened here. We took a trolley from the artisan market and paid $100 round trip per person. Everything is outside so consider sunblock, a hat and water.

This is a great option for sightseeing and entertainment.👍🏻😇
Dileep Chauhan — Google review
At least 450 years old, the existence of this fort predates the founding of Boston.
The architecture corresponds to the military models of the time. It might not be as well preserved as other castle/forts in the Caribbean, but it certainly is worth your visit. I have 2 small children, and we found plenty to enjoy as a family in our 2 hour-long visit.
You can hire private tour guides at the entrance, but there is also plenty of information online to inform you as you search its many nooks and crannies.
It's well worth the 60 pesos entry fee.
Carlos Andrés Botero — Google review
Great historic fort with a lot to see. A pity that it's been allowed to degrade so much. Still, there seems to be a lot of work going into renovations of at least the core structures. Hopefully when I come back I can view this historic treasure in it's full glory. Definitely worth a visit. I would recommend the guided tour as well, there are a few English speaking guides.
Dark Seraphim — Google review
San Juan de Ulua, Veracruz’s little gem. I recommend visiting this attraction. The tourist bus will take you there for $50 pesos ( $2.25 ) and the cost to enter is $60 pesos ($3 dollars). It’s an amazing attraction and as cheap as it gets.
You’ll get the option to pay a little bit more for a guided tour or you can just freely walk around the premises.
Bring water, for sure. Sun block and a hat wouldn’t hurt. If by any chance you forget, worry not, plenty of vendors outside the Fort selling everything you’ll need, CHEAP.
Definitely visit. Worth it.

Before it was a home for the elderly, it was kind of a castle for the couple Mier & Pesado, now, it has been remodeled and looks amazing. It is very nice and comfortable to walk around all the hallways, rooms, and gardens. You’ll find interesting museums and good restaurants. Definitely a must visit place in Orizaba Pueblo Magico.

Beautiful place and clean restrooms but better not visit it if it's raining, If you don't have the right equipment during those times, the mud will be very annoying. You can visit a museum of a very important old celebrity (Francisco Gabilondo Soler) and visit some restaurants (not very sure about the quality). Sometimes there are conventions, events and exhibitions. Better ask for more information.

Beautiful building with many places to eat seating places to enjoy the view, internet, and my favorite of all the museum of Francisco Gabilondo Soler " Cri Cri". His music, biographic and children songs are fantastic. You can transport in time. It is good to bring your children. It is free and very clean too.

Everything good except… the playground for children, (that will be just next to the Christmas decoration) has games that are totally rusted, the metal parts can be dangerous for them. I
Hope they fixed it as the place itself has become a city jewel.
The Teleférico de Orizaba is a cable car located near the Palacio Municipal that takes visitors to the peak of Cerro del Borrego hill, offering stunning views of the city and access to hiking trails. The ride lasts about five minutes and covers almost one kilometer while ascending 320 meters. There are several lookout points at the top, as well as amenities like bathrooms, a convenience store, an outdoor gym, and a zip line.
Awesome views! Inexpensive at 50 pesos to go up and down. Smooth ride and many look out spots at the top. There is a small convenient store, bathrooms, an outdoor gym, zip line at the top.

Omg!!! Out of this world experience. My husband and I enjoyed our second honeymoon so much and were simply delighted by this amazing city and the teleferico ride. Great way to get a birds eye view of the city as you go up and down. Felt safe, and it was a quick 5 minutes up. Beautiful scenery once at the top. There is a little tienda, washrooms, small kids play grounds, zip lining. Also, very inexpensive. Must do if in Orizaba!
Niloofar A. — Google review
The ride takes about 5 minutes to the top. The most inconvenience thing about it is buying the ticket. It's not go there, buy the ticket and taking the ride. There are always lots of people, who want to take the ride so if you are unlucky, you have to buy the ticket for a later time slot. If you are up there, you have few hiking options, a Museum and of course a beautiful sight over the City.

Six persons per cabin, three cabins go up and the go down. Travel time per leg 6 minutes 30 seconds. Atop the mountain you can do some activities like ziplining, walk down the mountain or just admire the view.

If you like heights (or even if you’re a liiiittle scared) and nice views, this is definitely recommended. You get a nice view of Orizaba as you stop and get off at the top of the mountain to explore more things and get a better view. We loved our experience here!

The Eco River Park in Orizaba offers a scenic riverside walk with murals and animal enclosures, making it a must-visit destination. The park features pedestrian and vehicular bridges crossing the river at frequent intervals, providing easy access for visitors. Tourists can enjoy observing a variety of animals such as lions, tigers, monkeys, and turtles while appreciating the effort put into their care.
It's totally free. Family and friendly. You can see lot's of exotic animals, kind of a zoo. Must wear comfortable clothing and shoes because you have to walk a lot. Perfect for spending your free time. Better watch out and find out what the trip hides! (For example, you can take a look at the locks of love and friendship placed on the bridges).

Wow. In 2023 Mexico there is a zoo from 1900. Crammed cages with overflowing wild animals. Depressed animals. All in the name of keeping species alive.??!! I’d rather be killed. Jesus and this is a catholic country! And this is a pueblo magico??!! Giving props to a city that visibly abuses animals is disgusting. Catholics and Mexican citizens should be outraged and embarrassed. For this reason I will never return to Orizaba —which is a shame because everything else about this Pueblo is magical.
Howard Goldstein — Google review
This is the end of the riverside walk, admiring the murals and the various animal enclosures, around 3 km one way from the teleferico area and double that for returning in the other direction on the opposite bank. Pedestrian bridges as well as vehicular bridges ( with steps to reach them) cross the river at frequent intervals. Not to be missed on a visit to orizaba. Here is where one finds the tiger, hippo. Some animal enclosure enroute are too tiny, wish they had more space.

Many Olmec artifacts found locally are on display in this brutalist museum designed by Paul Balev.
One of the most exquisite museums I've ever had the pleasure of visiting.
Make the effort.
The collection is displayed in such a way that you can truly connect to the artifacts (no touching!) and I rarely needed my English audio guide.
The weaving of indoor and out, placing the carvings into the courtyards, the length of the main corridor... even the brutalist architecture (usually not a fan, sorry) play together to keep you engaged.

This place is incredible. We've been to a few Anthropological museums around Mexico as there is such a rich history in the region, but this one is stunning. The pieces have good labels and descriptions that give context to their stories.

I was very warmly received and purchased general admission and the English audio self-tour. I thoroughly enjoyed the special exhibition as well as all of the amazing Olmec artifacts this museum houses. The covered terrace areas feel like little time-capsule oases. The grounds may be my new "happy place" here in Xalapa; I spent almost as much time outside enjoying all the amazing trees and flowers as I spent inside in awe and reverence of the history and culture collected here. That being said, I did notice that the museum, while they do have some areas with wheelchair ramps, is still VERY inaccessible for those with disabilities, particularly mobility issues. E.g. the restrooms are located upstairs and then there are a couple steps up to the entrance of the restroom, and the restrooms themselves were very cramped, smelly, and didn't seem well cared for. Also, as a white American visiting here, I recognize I may have had a different experience in my treatment by the staff than perhaps locals and other Mexicans may receive, which saddens me. I sincerely hope (and will try to do my part so) that more money will be allocated to maintaining this gorgeous museum that is so important to México's cultural heritage, so that it can be even more accessible and comfortable for ALL. Will definitely be coming back!

Awesome museum, one of the best in the world. Superb collection of artefacts set amongst beautiful modern architecture that really enhances their beauty. An inspirational day out.

Very interesting and well put together museum. Spent a couple of hours enjoying the exhibits the building and outside amongst the plants. It's a shame that they do not have adequate air-conditioning system to preserve all of the antiquities and waste paper just to give you a receipt of payment for entry which is the size of a certificate. They could also put in a coffee and cake area as they have a lot of room at the end of the exhibition and at the entrance also. They have not thought about using the space wisely. They charge 60 pesos extra for the audio guide which has no signal when walking around the museum. Apparently it's supposed to be free on Sundays. This is not the case.

For the solo backpacker on a budget. From Tlapacoyan you can take a local bus going to Martinez del Torre from the main terminal with VIA and tell them to let you off at El Encanto, about 10 pesos in 15 mins from centro. At the highway drop you walk 30 minutes to the end of the road while making a left turn after about 10 mins which you can see on Google map. You pay a 10 peso entrance 5 mins before the road end. Can also hire motos at highway. At road end is the river where you can hire a raft for 100 pesos a person to reach the waterfall which is a 5 mins paddle. You could swim but water is frigid all year in a shadow. With a small group you can add a rafting trip down river afterwards which is done more cheaply there than at adventure camps. Back at highway flag local bus from Martinez. You can't see waterfall from road end but its just around a corner. You don't need a full rafting trip, just a short crossing around that corner.

(Translated by Google) Nice place but with a lot of people. The trip to the waterfall is extremely short, less than half an hour. There are companies that offer the ride. I do not recommend contracting with people on the road. They charge more than double than if you arrive directly. If you go, don't leave garbage, don't be vermin.

Bonito lugar pero con mucha gente. El recorrido a la cascada es sumamente corto de menos de media hora. Hay empresas que ofrecen el paseo. No recomiendo contratar con las personas sobre la carretera. Cobran más del doble que si llegas directo. Si van, no dejen basura, no sean sabandijas.

It's a 45 mins ride in a launch. It's costs around 50 pesos.. there are no much wild or bird life to see around this place...
But it's super cool to take this ride in the middle of the day to escape the heat of Veracruz costal line...
If you are lucky you will encounter one of the locals who sells michiladas and beers... Also offers to take a picture with their crocodile (holding it :p) if you purchase some drinks...

Negotiating, he did not leave them at $900, only that we would spend money on his wife who had a grocery store and well, we bought beer and snacks for the tour, on the boat. 10 people fit. Papantla, a municipality situated on the Gulf of Mexico in the northern part of Veracruz state, was established by the Totonacs during the 13th century. This city has been ruling over the Totonacapan area ever since. It is located within the Sierra Papanteca range and boasts beautiful scenery.

Amazing site to see pyramids.
The style that the "Totonacs used is completely different than anything else in Mexico.
Absolutely beautiful. In the jungle, not too many people around. It is 20 pesos to park, but you do have to go through a muddy road to get to the parking, and then 90 pesos a person to enter.
You also have the flying hanging dancers, but I will warn you, they charge 50 pesos to watch a 5 minute show. But it was pretty cool to watch and record on my phone.

A very fascinating and unique ancient city. I would highly suggest those visiting to read up on its history so you can appreciate what makes these particular ruins unique. I hope they can secure some funding in the future to uncover more of the buildings.

We had a great visit. The ingenuity and hard work needed to build this place is definitely noteworthy. Unfortunately, the museum was closed, and the tour guides, though friendly and knowledgeable, catered to large groups with talk about culture, not archeology or history. I would've enjoyed learning more about the language, history, and geoglogy of the site.
The market here was the best place we saw for buying from local artisans. There is a small alcove in Papantla (closest town) for similar items, directly across from the main plaza, but it's more expensive and has less variety.
Maritza Quintero — Google review
Amazing ancient well-preserved Totonac city with unusual pyramids that have niches and carvings. Within its tropical setting of green grass and trees, I could actually feel what it must have been like to be there when it was a thriving city. Highly recommend visiting!

Visited in 2004, not sure what has changed since then. When we went, we were essentially free to wander as we pleased. No guides, no gift shop, no roped off areas.
Was on a trip from Tlaxcala to Veracruz with my parents and we stopped, as they knew it was a very interesting site. The Pyramid of the Niches is such an odd duck, haven't seen anything else quite like it in all the other sites I have seen. Most pre-Columbian sites have the standard pyramids, plazas, ball courts, temples and homes. But each seems to have it's own special building. Like the oval pyramid in Uxmal or the Observatory in Chichen Itza. El Tajin has the Pirámide de los Nichos.
Such a strange sense of history you get wandering around these places. Who were they, what were they like, why did they build what they did and where they did? All we can do is make guesses... And all we see are the macro elements of their lives. No clothes or food or wooden items. Just the bare bones of their constructions, with only our imaginations left to fill in the blanks.
Laurin Jeffrey — Google review
Lovely site. Easy to access from Papantla and worth a visit. Not much information available on site though, so best to do your research ahead of time if you don't be doing a guided visit.
Staying for the Voladores is an absolute must. Currently 50 pesos per person. And a beautiful sight.

Ver Voloradores de Papantla aquí! Saw the Papantla Flyers perform their worship ceremony to the rain God just outside of El Tajin. The archaeological site is full of ancient Mayan Ruins, many of which are still covered in jungle. One of the cradles of humanity is this archaeological area. Vendors greet you on your way in to visit the ruins selling noise makers that sound like local birds and jaguars, the big cat native to these areas. The ruins feature carved stones devoted to Mayan culture and the incorporation of snakes into their worship. The ruins have to be seen to be believed. There is also an affordable restaurant near the entrance to the site offering tasty affordable food. Beautiful people, in a beautiful ancient place. Highly recommend visiting this site. If I didn't have a motorcycle I would have left with a car full of souvenirs. This area isn't far from the community of Papantla de Olarte.
