(Translated by Google) What an interesting story: from a transit prison to a puppet theater.
In the 19th century, perhaps the only route from the western regions of the Russian Empire to Siberia passed through the city of Perm. Freight, goods and thousands of prisoners went east along the Siberian Highway every day. For their temporary maintenance on the outskirts of the city - and then this place was outlying - in 1871, according to the project of the architect Karvovsky, a transit castle was built.
In 1872–73, at the expense of merchants Kamensky, a chapel of St. Nicholas and a hospital were built at the prison, but, unfortunately, they have not survived to this day. And in 1899, the building of a correctional shelter for minors was attached to the transit castle.
In the 1920s and 30s, the NKVD prison No. 2 was located in the building.
In the 1940s, the so-called sharashka (prison scientific institute) was located here, where the famous Soviet designer of artillery weapons Mikhail Tsiryulnikov worked.
During the Great Patriotic War, the production of mines was launched here. For this, a foundry, mechanical, tool and woodworking shops, warehouses, a power plant, a hospital with 20 beds, a main building and two residential buildings were built. In the post-war years, the building was transferred to the Ministry of Internal Affairs: the prison was closed, a police club was opened in the castle.
A new turn in the fate of the transit castle came in 1957, when the city authorities began a large-scale reconstruction of the building into a theater. Prior to this, Perm puppeteers did not have their own home and toured various venues since the founding of the theater in 1937. Assistance in the construction of the stage was rendered to the city by the famous director Sergei Obraztsov.
The reconstruction of the building was completed in 1959. After that, the transit lock acquired its modern look.
From 1964 to 1987, the puppet theater shared it with the Perm Theater of the Young Spectator.
There is a memorial plaque on the building dedicated to Victor Ofrichter, the main director of the puppet theater in 1960-1982.
The building has recently been restored and deservedly included in all tourist routes.
