Pukhya Church was built in 1499, it was a three-nave house church. The vaults of the central part of the building have been destroyed. After numerous renovations, the choir room and vaulted ceiling have been preserved in their original form. The western façade of the church deserves attention, where a richly profiled portal with numerous pediment niches and a console is presented, the destroyed part of which has been replaced by a wooden structure. Also interesting is the building next to the stairs in the southwestern corner of the church. Next to the church there is an old barn and opposite it, behind the community center, is the Puhja cemetery. Not far from the cemetery, next to the road to Elva, there grows a century-old tree - the Syti birch, the circumference of which is 3 meters and the height is 22 meters.

The Botanical Garden of the University of Tartu is a delightful retreat for plant enthusiasts located in the heart of Tartu. The garden offers guided tours to visitors, showcasing a research base alongside riverside park housing greenhouses, sculptures and exotic plants from all over the world. Plant labels and informative plates are placed throughout the park providing an educational experience. The tranquil setting offers beautiful natural and man-made views with sculptures from various Estonian artists scattered throughout.
I recently went on a trip to Estonia and visited the second city of the country: Tartu! Have you heard about this city? 🇪🇪
It is also called the intellectual capital of the country! And that is for a reason! 😊 The city is full with concert halls, art galleries, theaters, events, creative neighbourhoods and lovely places for food and drinks.
Enjoy the pictures and stay tuned for for the article! 📕

When everything is cold outside, you enter into a wonderful heaven of plants and animals. The entrance ticket is 5 euros, and it completely worths it. There is much to see... for instance, the difference between the cold snowy of the outside and the miraculous green and warm of the inside. Its majestic. The air, the green surrounding the whole place. As me, I'm sure that you would be delighted to experience the Botanical Gardens of Tartu !
Emiliano Castro — Google review
Beautiful garden. Not big but you get lost easily discovering so many plants. There's also an exclusive area just for roses. We also found a cat there, so it was totally worth the visit.
Gabriel Schulte — Google review
Entrance is free to the gardens. €5 per person for the greenhouse but absolutely worth it. I was blown away by the carefully constructed design of these gardens. You’re taken on a journey and there is a surprise around every corner.
The palm house has a brilliant selec of mature tropical planting, with the unexpected bonus of freshwater turtles! A hidden gem of tranquility in the city.

Wonderful hide away for nature and plant lovers in the middle of Tartu city. Allkind of plants starting from tiny and modest ending with big and flashy from all over the world. Plants are marked with label tags. Also many learning information plates around the park. Really piecefull place with wonderful views landscaped to look half natural half manmade. Many sculptures by different estonian artists are placed around the park. Most of those labeled with artpiece and artist name.
Outside area is free of charge.
I suggest to visit several times during the year to see the garden change during different seasons.

Lady at the reception was so kind to us. She told us everything about botanical gardens, give us some advices about what to look at and also she made a few jokes! - that is so unexpected in Estonia. We get through the garden really quickly, but there are many places where you can just sit and chill for a moment.

Beautiful oasis in the middle on Tartu. Most beautiful in the June when everything is starting to bloom (Peonys and after that roses) and is extra green but you'll find always and every day something new. One of the best places just to walk and enjoy the beautiful weather. You can also have a picnic or play with children on the grass and playground area on the other side of the park.
In winter time it is good idea to check in the glass houses!
I would say that if you come to Tartu just for a few hours then it would be good idea to visit Botanical Garden and Werner cafe (although there are other good cafes also close by like Tüümian and Säde). You can just walk in into the garden, no ticket but when visiting glass houses then there is separate ticket.
PS! If you're really looking then you may see cat and a squirrel who are living there.
PS2! Of course all photos are made by myself in this exact botanical garden during my visits.

A lovely place kept with extreme care.
The external garden is open to everyone, no ticket required, just walk in and enjoy it.
I love to walk there and it's a refreshing oasis of beauty in Tartu.
Many different plants and flowers with lively pathways around the lake or up to the hill. Very well taken care of.
Just remember to bring with you a mosquito repellant when visiting in the summer!

We were shocked to discover that entrance for the gardens is free. It was magical! My toddler loved the jungle feel and all the "secret" passages. End if juneis perfect for peony lovers as they were blooming fully. A little harder to manage with stroller, but we still loved it. A little playground inside as well. Totally recommend!
Tartu City Government is a must-see attraction, especially during the festive holiday season. The Neoclassical and baroque style of the town hall makes it one of the most magnificent in the world. Its classic and charming interior, along with its wide reception rooms, preserves the history of Tartu. The building's majestic appearance dominates Town Hall Square and adds to the medieval charm of the city.
One of the most beautiful and magnifecent town halls not only in the Baltic States but also in the whole world (seriously). Built in a Neoclassical and baroque style, it is well-preserved over time. It is impossible to miss it out during your stay in Tartu and I would say it is worth visiting the town hall during the ooen days. Also it perfectly correlates with the town hall square, and together they make amazing appearence of a medieval town. It's the reason why Tartu is so perfect.

Skulptuur "Suudlevad tudengid" or 'The Kissing Students' sculpture and fountain is a must-visit symbol in Tartu, Estonia. The bronze statue depicts two students kissing under an umbrella, representing everlasting love. It's a popular spot for lovers and newlyweds to visit, with traditional Estonian weddings often taking place there. Designed by Mati Karmin, the composition also functions as a fountain.
The statue sits directly in front of city hall, and in winter time is surrounded by an ice skating rink.

Lined with cafes and restaurants, the square offers a charming atmosphere for exploration.

Beautiful! Lots of cafes, restaurants, and nice old buildings. Some might call it the heart of Tartu!
The sculpture "Father and Son" is a unique and thought-provoking piece of art located in Tartu. It offers an original interpretation of an image and a fountain with a focus on romanticism, standing out from the political and cultural sculptures found in the square. While some find it interesting and captivating, others may feel it's somewhat strange, prompting curiosity about its meaning.
Beautiful, thought provoking statues. If there is discomfort it must be in the eyes of the beholder, as these two look quite at ease.

Established back in 1997, AHHAA Science Centre is the largest science museum in the country. It offers a variety of interactive exhibits and a planetarium that cater to visitors of all ages. This place is perfect for kids starting from as young as four or five years old and adults can also have fun exploring its offerings. The museum's holiday season was especially impressive and left visitors very satisfied with their experience.
This is the place for all ages-kids were super excited and didn't want to leave. Will definitely come here again after some time.

Very interactive museum. There are lots of interesting entertainments for both children and adult - various science inventions with descriptions and practical use, exibitions, also sport activities (basketball, running, football). Good that tickets are for all day and you can easily go in and out to/from museum.

Great museum experience. we visited many science museums in different countries and I can definitely say that this is one of the best. excellent zoning, a lot of topics and everyone can find something interesting individually. Plus a lot of cool visual objects where you can take good photos. To visit the city with children - the number one place. Particularly pleased with the huge space that presents new exhibitions every year and motivates repeated visits every season. Thanks to the leadership.

During our first visit to Tartu Ahhaa science center was 1st in the too to must go places and we did it. It is very interesting and full of activities. Kids just love it but there are interesting things for parents as well. Price for 2 parents and 1 kid was 54 together with planetarium ticket, and it’s full day multi enter ticket. Cant tell that planetarium was great, but from content perspective it was definitely great and interesting. We learned new things. There is a restaurant as well, so you can enjoy whole day there. A great museum that everyone can enjoy. We are a science teacher and a physics graduate, yet we still learnt things! It is open late, so it can be left until later on a one-day trip to Tartu or a great place to go in the rain - there's an inside exhibition about sport with lots of practical exercise equipment to burn off a little (or large) one's steam.
The Museum shows science very practically and displays some of the more complex ideas at play.
We couldn't visit the planetarium as we arrived later in the day for shows in English. We would suggest checking in advance if you have specific language needs

The Estonian National Museum is a remarkable, contemporary structure which showcases Estonian culture and folk art. The museum's permanent exhibit provides an in-depth account of national prehistory and history, with particular emphasis on the Russian occupation. Additionally, the 'Echo of the Urals' exhibition gives an overview of the various peoples who speak languages within the Estonian language family. The museum features modern design and technology to tell impressive stories about the past of Ugro-Finnic populations.

The Estonian National Museum is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in the country's history and culture. The museum's collection is extensive and fascinating, providing a detailed look into the lives and traditions of Estonian people throughout the ages. The building itself is also impressive, with a modern and sleek design that blends seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. The museum's exhibitions are well-curated, informative, and engaging, making for a memorable and enriching experience. If you've been roaming enough and start feeling hungry, there's also a restaurant and you can pick a quick snack or a full meal. Overall, the Estonian National Museum is a wonderful place to spend a few hours and learn more about Estonia's rich heritage.

Impressive and imposing building. It's a short drive from the city and easy to locate. Parking is free.
The museum has a number of exhibits. We planned a full day here after visiting the upside-down house which was on the way.
The displays are mainly locale exhibits and provide an extensive engaging narrative of Estonia, it's artifacts, people, land, history, climate, trade, culture, animals and art.
It's a huge place to walk and we rested at lunch at the museum restaurant. The decor within was another work of art. Love the clean, spacious layout.
We had an unhurried lunch of fried fish fillet with rice and a zesty salad, apple pastry and coffee. The food and drinks were inexpensive and so delicious. Service was personable.
We enjoyed our visit and will likely drop in again in the future.

Very beautiful museum but it is designed more like an art museum than a history one. There is no chronological order to follow, which made learning harder for me.
You are given cards with your language on them at the start, where you tap on the information screen and it switches to your language. Very cool.

Impressive building with generous volumes, it is interesting to see it and walk through.
Nice Estonian artists paintings (mainly modern period) in the temporary exhibition.
Permanent exhibition on finno-ugric people was very immersive, it will certainly please kids. The content was a bit poor.
The main permanent exhibition gallery on Estonia has interesting content but the setup makes it confusing and hard to navigate.

We spent three hours in the museum and also visited the restaurant "Pööriöö", where the food was very tasty.
It is worth planning at least 3-5 hours and be sure to visit the restaurant. :)

The Estonian National Museum (Eesti Rahva Muuseum) is modern (2016?) and huge. It is on the site of what was a big USSR military base. It's a bit out of the way if you are staying in the Old City but worth the effort to get there.
Upon entering we were approached by a young woman working at the museum to ask us about our Cold War experiences which we recorded in a booth. We mention the drills at school where we ducked under our desks and covered our heads. Also the Cuban Missile Crisis.
There are numerous screens throughout the museum where you scan your ticket in order to get it to change to English.
The temporary exhibit described a number of interesting traditional superstitions common in Estonia.
The museum has a very extensive variety of subjects that it covers.
Downstairs was an exhibit ("Echo of the Urals" Finno-Ugric) about the various different people that are linguistically related to Latvian including Finns, Hungarians and Sami.

This is a very interesting museum if you are interested in learning about the history of Estonia. The museum has an enormous number of items on display, spanning Estonia's culture and history for the last 1000+ years. All of the items on display have electronic placards that use e-ink displays to change the language of their text. You just swipe your museum ticket on them and the language changes to the language chosen when you purchased your ticket. Really neat! We spent the entire afternoon there, trying to take it all in.
The museum also features a really nice restaurant. We started our visit with lunch there and it was excellent!

The whole place is a work of art - tonnes of amazing minimalist design solutions to present tonnes of materials from the distant and recent past. It's interesting to even just seek out some displays and witness how those are presented. And the audio installations really help get submerged into the subject, specially with the Ural exhibit. Also one of the favorite bits was the solution with touching the displays with your ticket and it switching to your preferred language, that you ask for during the ticket purchase.
Speaking of tickets I do recommend getting a full ticket and setting aside some good 2-3h for the place.

Very comprehensive exhibition of Estonian history. Very large area and if you want to read all info then you need to take day or more. In ERM has also conference hall, concert area, also souvenir shop and restaurant.
Unique museum featuring playful, interactive exhibits on the history of transportation in Estonia.
This tourist gem is little bit hidden. Definitely worth the visit. You can learn a lot of about Estonian roads, buy some souvenirs or just take great photos. Kids will love this place.

Really super interesting (also for women). Great old machines, lots of information on driving safety and technology. You can sit here and virtually test your driving behavior. Beautiful old cars and lots of Estonian history - right back to the Middle Ages.
Your children are in good hands, there is an entire floor for the family. With play and relaxation facilities, as well as a kitchen. Covid requirements are strictly adhered to. Since a lot is also outside, make sure that you don't catch a rainy day.
Absolut friendly and nice staff.
We recommend!

Excellent museum, especially good for smaller children. A lot of old and interesting machines from soviet times. Some cool machines from modern Estonian times (like grocery shop and bank-truck). Very good playground, driving area. As usual, museum is skilfully blending with landscape.

Super cool place where to spend a day with small boys. There was a lot to see, climb, ride and touch. Would have been even more, if our attention span would be bigger. Visited with two boys of 1.5 and 2 years old.
Tried the big wheeled bicycle. OMG, was terrifying experience. One can ride it but can't figure out how to get off it 😅

It seems like an ordinary local history museum, but the exhibitions are interesting, well structured, with easy-to-understand explanations of the exhibits. Replicas of historical objects that can be touched. Kids should love it. Thanks to the museum employee, the guy who sold the tickets, but also kindly gave us a brief introduction to the museum and also waited a little after the museum's opening hours while we watched the multimedia show. Thanks again.

Visited both - nature museum and Alūksnes museum (same castle/different entrances).
Nature museum and their shiny rocks is a must see. If you're thinking - "shiny rocks, there is nothing special about shiny rocks" - YOU ARE SO WRONG! THEY ARE AMAZING!
We visited only the temporary expositions in the Alūksnes museum. They were made more special and interesting with the commentary from the guide.
Nice experience and a must see.
After (or before) I strongly suggest visiting the park across the road. It has talking lanterns, temples and other fun stuff.

Very exotic and wild place, the river that surrounds almost the whole castle (ruins) the remains of the ancient walls, the slopes - it all somehow paints a picture of how life could have been several hundred years ago.
Kaido Kurrikoff — Google review
Impressive ruins, but the museum has a pretty limited exposition, so I recommend just going for the ruins area ticket (3EUR) and avoiding the museum ticket (9EUR). You can spend the 6EUR you saved in the local pub situated in the same building.
Watch out with kids - the parking lot is across the road (so kids can run in front of a car) and the ruins area can be a bit tricky to navigate for kids under 6-7 years old - some very steep stairs, some edges to potentially fall off.

Waterpark itself is a bit old-fashioned, but for it's price it is quite good.
Nice 25m swimming pool and hot saunas.

Very enjoyable place to go! Good swimming pool to do some sporting activities. Waterpark is small but has good features and a bar with nice drinks (also local interesting drinks). Saunas are good but the steam sauna should have some good aroma. The surrounding is great with fresh air and pine trees.
Robert H — Google review
The building is quite old and rooms don't have cooling nor fridge. SPA was actually spacious and everything worked. There should have been some more saunas (f.e. salt sauna, Japanese bath). In July it wasn't overcrowded. Pool bar worked very well. Also there was lifeguard who was very active, so this was very nice touch.
The weakest part was catering in different building - it was like old nostalgic catering. No restaurant. Even if the catering was included in price (evening and morning) I would not recommend this and would eat at Värska Veekeskus Näki cafe or somewhere else in Värska.
Raino Kloren — Google review
A quite simple, yet good water park. No big slides, but enough to do also for kids. A decent pool to swim and a big fun pool with different swirls, massage showers and other elements. Possibility to have soft drinks, like ice cream shakrs right in the pool! Different saunas.

While 'green house' or 'Värska külastuskeskus - Reegi maja' on the other side of the road, nfew hundret meters away from farm museum is absolutely amazing worth visit place and I have no doubt that 7€ entrance fee is bargain, (10€ if you buy package of two), 5€ for Seto museum is inadequate. There is almost nothing to see, 3 farm houses without a wider contex, just one settlement and adjacent restaurant (which is really good) Maybe it would need more patience, time and better weather to enjoy place more, but I'm sure that I visit many open air museums and most of them were better or much better. 4 stars just because I love Seto culture and people, otherwise 3

(Translated by Google) The monastery has an extraordinary atmosphere, tranquility and friendliness. It’s a pity that there is no government funding for the restoration of the temple built in the 13th century... We left a very small amount, as much as we could at the moment. But, if possible, please contribute as much as you can - I would like to restore the frescoes of the 13-14 centuries....

I went to the Temple and museum on the territory of the monastery. I was alone, but they kindly organized an excursion for me, for which I express my gratitude to the monastery servants. I advise you to visit the monastery, you won’t regret it.

We walked along the bridges, through the park along the river bank. It was hard not to notice the sunlit dome and white walls of the monastery.
Beauty!
Too bad we didn't come...
Next time we will definitely come and visit!

(Translated by Google) A stunning monastery, hidden among small houses, almost in the city center.
The nuns and servants of the monastery were busy preparing for a ceremony or holiday, but they were responsive, friendly and happy to have guests.
We walked around the vast territory and looked at the architecture.
Atmospheric and interesting place.

The Church of the Savior Not Made by Hands with a large gilded dome is clearly visible from the federal highway P-23. The monastery is beautiful, but cannot boast of such a rich history as many monasteries in the Pskov region.
