Alcala De Henares

Alcalá de Henares is a city in central Spain, northeast of Madrid. It’s known for the University of Alcalá, which occupies 16th-century buildings in the old town. These include the Paraninfo, a hall with an intricately patterned Mudejar ceiling, where the King of Spain presents the annual Cervantes literary prize. Nearby, the Cervantes Birthplace Museum is the former home of the celebrated author of “Don Quixote.”

The Cervantes Birthplace Museum showcases reconstructed historical interiors and first editions in the home of the famed author of "Don Quixote." Visitors can witness authentic Spanish architecture from centuries ago without any admission fee. Located close to Madrid, Alcala de Henares provides a charming walking space with many dining options for tourists. Additionally, the museum offers a glimpse into Cervantes' life and era, making it an essential stop for history enthusiasts.
I may as well post pictures of windmills (Consuegra, La-Mancha). Sancho could be Samwise Gamgee if he had followed the right master. I’m just saying.

Amazing to visit a house so old that raised Cervantes! Very well preserved and organised! Free entrance! And there are statues of Don Quixote and Sancho in front of the house! Loved it!
Prashanti Fernanda Koch — Google review
Even if you didn't read his masterpiece, if you are eager to see how a spanish house looked like few centuries ago. Then this is a must seen. And remember that the town is not far from Madrid, offers a lovely walking space with many restaurants. And the entrance is free of charge.

Nicely renovated place. It’s an impression of the time when Cervantes was born. Very important for Spanish culture. Museum visit is free.

Very cool, I didn't know who Cervantes was until after the visit but I learned a lot and enjoyed the entire exhibition. Definitely worth a visit if you're in Alcala, it's free too!

A must see when visiting Alcala de Henares. It’s amazing to go back in time where Cervantes lived. Free admission.

Took the Cercanías bus to visit Alcalá de Henares for the day to visit the birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes. There was an interactive show, you get to explore the home, all for free. Expect a line, but it moves pretty quickly.

Alcalá is full of wonders and this old house is without a doubt one of them. It is however insanely crowded by ruthless tourists who flock for a gratis experience. Not a must have
Krzysztof Nosek — Google review
Intersting, even if you are not a fan of Cervantes' work, seeing how one lived during that era is fascinating. Can you spot the English grammar error in the sign? Hopefully, this stimulates the local tourist authority to fix it. This is a university town, after all. Such visible errors are....ironic, to say the least.

Free! Interesting old family home with helpful staff. Circular burners for embers for heating. Plates for shaving/bleeding.l

In center of Alcalá you can find the Cervantes Birthplace house and museum. The entrance is free and you can learn and see how was the lifestyle at that time. Very interesting and a mandatory visit in Alcalá.

Although the museum is not that big, it’s nice to see the birth place of the most famous Spanish writer, Miguel de Cervantes. It’s also very interesting to see what the place used to look like from the exhibits. If you are in the area, it’s definitely worth visiting.

Alcalá University is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that boasts significant cultural importance and remarkable architecture. Upon visiting by chance, tourists are treated to a stunning courtyard with impressive bird activity. The university, which happens to be the second oldest in Spain, offers an outstanding learning experience amidst its beautiful campus. In addition to local students, the institution hosts numerous international students. Even for non-students, the University's exterior architecture makes it worth visiting for at least half a day.
The university offers guided tours mostly in Spanish, but there is one tour in English at 14.00. It is worth checking in advance if the times change. There is an office just at the main entrance.

The University of Alcalá is a prestigious institution located in Alcalá de Henares, Spain. It has a rich history dating back to 1293 and is known for its contributions to literature, science, and culture. The university's campus is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site university town. Not the grandest of world heritage sites but very historic. It was founded by Cardinal Jiménez de Cisneros in the early 16th century. Alcalá de Henares was the world's first planned university city. Not to be confused with being the oldest as this goes to Bologna in Italy. It has some pleasant historic buildings, a neat plaza and is well worth a visit as it’s a nice town. Just don’t expect an Oxford or Sorbonne.

Great experience learning in the second oldest university in Spain. Beautiful campus. There are tons of international students here as well.
Ryan Corcoran — Google review
Not a student, however wonderful exterior architecture. Worth a half day trip over here.
david collomb — Google review
Do not come to this school if you are a foreign student and need some documents from the university to apply for legal stay at the immigration office. Even if the foreign student's tuition fee is much higher, the school will not provide the required documents in time. The school does not care if the student's stay is legal in Spain or not, as long as the student pays the tuition, no one cares about the student's need. Foreign students are even being told to go back to their own country and take online courses. The one-year master's program is very poorly set up and the schedule is chaotic, with always impromptu situations: classes are changed at different times or classrooms are changed. The administration office is a disaster, they can´t even get your names right in multiple emails while your email address is literally your full name——they don’t even bother to look at it!

As a tourist walking in by coincidence is a treat. Reading about its history makes it even more fun. Beautiful courtyard, the one in the back had the most amazing bird action I have seen. Worth a visit when in Alcalá.

The museum also offers didactic activities for both children and adults and features remarkable temporary exhibitions on its patio.
One of three archaeological museums in the area. On itself a trip throughout the ages, from Prehistory till the late 17th Century. The Renaissance building that contains it, with its frescoes in the domes, is a work of art on its own right. Martilota is a sophisticated eatery that offers an array of contemporary Spanish seafood dishes and wine pairings. With its chic-casual ambiance, including a delightful terrace for outdoor dining, the restaurant showcases a touch of exotic decor inspired by nature and travels. This stylish establishment provides great value for money, situated slightly away from the old town center but definitely worth the trip. Expect to indulge in a fusion of flavors that will tantalize your taste buds without breaking the bank.
Now visited 3 times. Wonderful food, top class. Flavours are Michelin star standard. Great staff and atmosphere. Reservations highly recommended. This is my favourite restaurant in Spain
iain huddy — Google review
ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS FOOD (— BUT A BIT OVERPRICED) There is no denying that there has gone a great deal of thought into the interior and exterior design of the Martilota Restaurant. It's just nice! The rustic bronce exterior and thoughtfully arranged spaced of the interior, as well as the many many plants (which are literally everywhere) just make the place lively and utterly comfortable; 'you just wanna stay and spend the whole afternoon'-type of comparable. Top! The rooftop bar is the crown jewel and the forthcoming, kind, and smiling staff is the cherry on top. Lovely! But the atmosphere, naturally, is not the only reason to take a seat at the Martilota, the food's important too, right? Right! And it's delicious! Simply well-prepared, beautifully served, delicious food. This is what you'd expect from restaurant food (as opposed to that deep-fried, high-cholesterol, heart-attack inducing junk we're served all over the country). This place did something different (at least on the dishes my family and I ordered) than most other places, sadly all-too-rarely seen; our food didn't swim in excessive amounts of oil for once. 5-stars all around! I'm super happy! Only reason the overall score isn't 5 but 4 stars, is because the whole experience is a bit overpriced, but it's somewhat defensible due to the fabulous location and endearing service. Good job Martilota, keep it up!

Visiting this beautiful city, we have eaten in this beautiful restaurant, a restaurant in the center of the city and very quiet, we ate very comfortable and quality vs. price is very consistent, much better than many restaurants that you find in Madrid. The service can improve more.

Fantastic value for money in this industrial chic restaurant. It's not in the centre of the old town but is worth the visit. Prepare to treat your taste buds to an explosion of flavours with their fusion style food at reasonable prices. Service is friendly, efficient and professional.

We gad great meals in this industrial-looking and very stylish, simply furnished place. I especially loved sourdough bread. I just don’t like the outside view
Cigdem Giray — Google review
The food here was great! We came for dinner without a reservation and it was busy, but we got a table outside. The service was good. We spent ~50 euros for two without drinks or dessert. I especially recommend the cuttlefish dish! I did not see many vegetarian options on the menu.
Ally J — Google review
This place is a vibe and a half. Beautiful faux garden throughout with four distinct dining experiences both indoors and outdoors. The menu wasn’t what we expected and we are glad we were able to branch out a bit from the rhythm of tapas and basic menus. We enjoyed everything right down to the last bites. The presentation and selections made us feel like we could have paid double for this meal 🥘 back in Chicago. Dessert 🍨 and seafood 🦞 made this experience unforgettable. The waiter even treated us to 🥃 shots at the end of the meal.

Great food and ambient. We shared four dishes between three people and enjoyed all of them, especially the Ensaladilla and bunuelos de bacalao, which were really impressive. Desserts were also great, we had the fake tomato and loved it. Place was quite busy, so making a reservation is highly advisable.

Japanese restaurant
We have mentioned that you can start with the traditional Alcalá cuisine, but how about trying something different? One of the best places we have eaten in Alcalá de Henares is a Japanese restaurant. However, this restaurant has an interesting twist with Spanish and Mediterranean flavors fused into their dishes. As a sushi enthusiast, I was thrilled to try this place. I visited with my partner and found the waiter to be very accommodating and informative, explaining the menu and answering all our questions.
A marvellous place. Many will ask, a Japanese restaurant in Alcalá de Henares? Well, yes! The food was just amazing. The ramen and miso soup in particular were an explosion of flavour. The best ones I’ve probably had. I would return just for those. The wagyu fat on top of the tuna, when melted, transformed the tuna into beef. Amazing. The white truffle with the butterfish is a must and is included in the Michelin guide. Overall we would recommend the €38 tasting menu which includes a lot of amazing food, desert and a shot. So much food indeed that we took one of the ramen as take way for dinner! The staff were just incredibly polite. We were mainly looked after Isa, who was so much fun to be with, and a great person. The wine is not included but like everywhere in Spain, it is incredibly affordable.

Unexpectedly lovely Japanese/fusion cuisine in Alacala’ de Henares. Nice restaurant, very pleasing crockery, glasses and cutlery. Excellent service: our waiter was knowledgeable, smiley, attentive and very nice. The food was delicious and very nicely presented.
Fiona Stone — Google review
Being a big sushi lover, I was very excited trying this place. Went there with the boyfriend, the waiter looking after us was very helpful and nice, explained the menu and was able to answer all our questions. The wine selection is really nice, I appreciated that you can't only chose from Rioja and Albarino like in most restaurants. The food is to die for, although it's on the pricey side, so I would keep it as an option for special occasions
gyorkosniki — Google review
A pretty original place, not just because of the atmosphere but the menu too. A wide variety of dishes for all kind of palates. The unique inconvenient and why I decided to leave four stars is that the prices are a little bit higher than expected.
Alberto Pérez — Google review
The food is just amazing! We've tried sushi in many different countries and I must tell you this place is definitely worth visiting if you're in town and in sushi mood. 👍
Dayana Canada — Google review
The food was great, the first three were amazing, as soon as the sushi starts it gets lazy, I would expect something more from a Michelin star. The desert is amazing. As for the atmosphere, it’s bit noisy, I was hoping it would be bit more subtle and less noisy. Service is normal, average I would say. I expected wine taste in the beginning, bit after I order in the second time. For me it’s almost a Michelin star.
Ezio Thapaliya — Google review
Had the menu on a Sunday. €38/person. Not impressed. Some of the dishes were good and some were mediocre. Sorry to say that I am not in a hurry to go back.

I had high hopes for a decent sushi restaurant here in Alcalá, I have been severely disappointed. For the equivalent of $62.20 or €56.60 I received what would be gas station quality sushi in the United States and that may be giving it upgraded status. It is hands down the worst investment for food at a restaurant I have had in the year I have lived here. It did get delivered on time, and that's all I have good to say.

The Parador de Alcalá de Henares is a sophisticated hotel that offers stylish accommodations. It features a chic restaurant, an outdoor pool, and a spa. Another recommended restaurant in the area is Hosteria del Estudiante, which serves traditional dishes such as migas a la alcalaina and cochinillo asado. This historical establishment is located right across from the Parador and offers Cervantine cuisine.
The Parador here is a beautiful and historic building set back from a quiet street in Alcala. It is only a few minutes from the Main square/street where you will find all the bars & restaurants. The lobby and halls will make you feel as though you are in a Museum. The room was nice & functional and photos you find online will likely not do them any justice. Unfortunately the pool was closed on our visit in May, with it opening the first week of June. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
Warren Williams — Google review
As usual with Paradores service is perfect. The location is excellent, located 3 minutes from Plaza Cervantes and the main University Building. Installed in an old building ( Old Santo Tomas College), the interior is new with a quite modern touch. The Parking is big and roomy, and very welcomed as in the whole area there is no street parking (Follow the instructions on how to get to the parking as they will provide you when making the reservation - If you get to the main entrance is too late) Great restaurant as in most Paradores, but you also have plenty of restaurant close by. Only complain the rooms lighting system us kind of weird as tend to turn on and off most of the lights in the room, and the temperature was too hot in our room and AC didn´t help (It seem was only on heat mode) Overall a great experience
Manuel Gonzalez Vazquez — Google review
I am reviewing the Spa in this hotel. The hotel is modern and minimalist in design. The spa was €40 per person. I think this was over priced. It is a very basic spa. But is very stylish, beautiful and peaceful space. But has only a small pool with basic jacuzzi jets only. One hot shower. One cold shower. One stone pebble floor foot shower. Small sauna. Small steam room. I have paid less in other hotel with better facilities, juices and flavoured waters. There was only a basic water cooler bottle. The changing room was small and basic with no facility to take wet clothes away. However the spa was very clean, well maintained and the staff were very helpful and friendly. Over priced but clean and beautiful.

Confortable and quite rooms with excellent bathroom. Foods are delicious, worth to stay here althought the location is a bir far away from the city center. It can be good decision for quite and relax trip.

After the disappointment at the Parador Cuenca, we improved our day with lunch at the Parador Alcalá de Henares restaurant. Classy surroundings, excellent cuisine and absolutely wonderful and professional service. The staff at the hotel reception and in the bar also deserve praise.
Jolana Zouharov? — Google review
Not Parador enough I have stayed in more than a few Paradores (A Parador is a state-owned luxury hotel, usually located in a converted historic building such as a monastery, castle, convent, etc) including the fabulous Parador in Ronda. I booked this place hoping to be treated to a similar experience and getting to stay in a piece of history. However we were a bit disappointed as this felt a lot more modern and not having retained enough of the heritage vibe. So a bit disappointed, especially since the Rooms were super basic - didnt even have any bottle of water of even the basic luxury elements. LOCATION: Fantastic location in the heart of old town and easy access to all attractions DINE + DRINK: The parador has a sweet Bar and a good bistro, both of which we didnt get a chance to try. ROOM: We stayed in Room 207, so this review is based on that; SIZE: Spacious enough for 2 adults and simple baggage; VIEW: partially hidden view of the heritage building’s tower ; AIR-CON: Perfectly functioning cooler that helped in setting the perfect room temperature; BED: Comfortable bed that played the expected part of putting us to sleep; BATHROOM: Stand-in shower; TOILETRIES: decent spa quality toiletries FACILITIES: Super compact gym with limited machines and no weights. Not the best. The swimming pool is a compact one too. Both seem like something that have been fitted just for namesake. SERVICE: Friendly staff that took care of all our needs with a smile and made us feel at home and well taken care of. HOW WIRED YOU WILL BE: Free Wi-Fi that works well all over the property, and the speed is good! Small TV dishing out a wide variety of channels spanning sports, news, music, movies, and entertainment in limited languages

It's an amazing renovated historic place, the staff is super helpful and polite. They'll go above and beyond to help you out. The rooms are exquisite and wonderful however the lighting system very wack and somehow depends on settings on your room card, the only guy who knows how it works was the one who set it up its imo the only inconvenience of the hotel. In some they offer you Alcalá almonds which are a local treat and a nice one to have to yourself. It has also an amazing coffee hall and bar where outsiders can come enjoy a nice drink with a relaxing atmosphere. You'll notice that the building only has two floors and that's because of the rules of Alcalá. A city that is older than Madrid (roman presence). All in all 5/5 you should stay there

Oussama Jabri — Google review
This is a very lovely parador in a historic building, but completely renovated, so it’s a combination of old and modern architecture. It is a large hotel, that hosts events and welcomes hotel guests. It also has a very nice spa that is situated in the old chapel, but has a very futuristic interior. The restaurant has some vegan options, but the vegan options for breakfast are very limited, with no plant-based yoghurt or milk available. The staff of the hotel is wonderful, and very professional. Too bad they cannot accept any tips when using a bank card.

It was really special, we loved it. Unfortunately we have spent only one night, but if it was for us would have stayed longer. Alcala is a kind small city, good food, nice weather. Everything perfect
Susan Peña villasante — Google review
This hotel is excellent. In a redesigned historical building in a beautiful part of the city it's well worth staying. Known for its spa and pool this place is an excellent spot to visit. The dinner here is extra excellent and high quality as Paradores are known for. The service excellent and enthusiastic. Everything is spotless and clean and the hotel offers full service and large rooms The only star i could remove was for the strange lack of electrical outlets in the room or bedside. Forcing you to charge your phone away from the bedside. Other than that a perfect stay. Highly recommended.
Javier “Allan” DeRoque — Google review
It was nice luxury hotel very quite, suitable for holding business meets and conferences. However I had room on 0th floor and the view from the room was not great. All I could see was a large grey wall outside my window. But this hotel is situated near historical place, so immediately outside hotel u can enjoy some history.

Indalo, a tapas bar in Alcala de Henares, is a seemingly modest restaurant that can accommodate a large number of patrons. Despite its unassuming appearance, it has attracted the attention of the King of Spain during his visits to the city. Surprisingly, this establishment offers reasonably priced meals that are both satisfying and filling.
Great tapas and local beer. Nice atmosphere. Reasonable prices. Good service. Thank you!

Reasonable prices, nice assortment of tapas you can choose from, big portions and good flavors. However, we thought the waiter was way too rude. He did not made us feel welcome.

Awesome dining experience as mentioned by others! Service was good and friendly , place was clean. Went early for lunch (around 12nn) and it was not crowded. Walked past again later and there was a queue! Order a drink and the tapa is on the house ( you can choose from a picture menu) additional tapa is eur 2.50/plate. One of the best meals we had in our trip, taste and value wise. Simply awesome! Highly recommended!
