Beach
Outdoor Activities
Mavra Volia is a picturesque beach made up of volcanic stones that offers opportunities for swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing. It is situated near the charming seaside village of Emborio and has large black round pebbles along its waterfront. While it can be challenging to walk on the pebbles, many tourists still flock to this beach for its crystal clear waters and small café located at the very end.
Best beach in Chios. Try the second, longest beach. Suggest to stay until dark.
Pavlos Stephanides — Google review
Not to be missed beach with black pebble stones, unique in Greece. Water tends to get deep very quickly but clear as a whistle!
Miran Sarkissian — Google review
It's a beautiful beach with black volcanic pebbles and crystal water. We went there in September during the week and it was not crowded at all. There is a small cafe there with drink and food.
Shabnam Mortazavi — Google review
Amazing black stones in the beach. Not organised so must bring umbrella&chair etc. Cold but cristal clear water.
Onur Sener — Google review
One of the clearest waters i have been. If you are willing to walk, it is very long so you can be remote. Take water and umbrella with you. #cubstories#chios
Takis Panagiotopoulos — Google review
You can go early (8-9am) if you want to just take fotos in this beautiful beach. When you arrive , continue walking the path until you reach the second part of this beach and when you are there, go further until you pass this huge rocky cliff, so to take fotos next to it. We didn't swim there, it was kinda scary for me 😅 so i cant say anything about the water.
Lydia Pgr — Google review
Great beach with black volcanic pebbles. Second part of the beach is less crowded, you can access there by the stairs at the end of the first beach
Damla Nisa Cevik — Google review
It has a beach made of black volcanic rocks. A black beach! I think, absolutely, it should be seen… The water is clear and warm. There are showers and umbrellas. There's a small café too.
Yusuf Karakus — Google review
An enjoyable beach made of black stones. Not my favorite in Chios but still nice to enjoy a relaxing day.
Timur Cetintas — Google review
Large black round pebbles. Difficult to walk on there but that's the price to pay for the nicest beach on the island - crystal clear waters with a small beach cafe at the very end providing with some provisions. It attracts many tourists and several couples heading there for a swim. It also has another part once you go up a little walkway extending its range significantly. Highly recommended.
Nicholas Lelos — Google review
Excellent Beach very beautiful clean with crystal waters and not very crowded. Black pebble beach because this was a volcanic area a long time ago. You must have with you towels and beach chairs as well as a beach umbrella. Very nice reasonably priced bar behind the beach that serves drinks and sandwiches/hot dogs etc.
Oliver Bailey — Google review
One of the most beautiful beaches I've ever been at with clear deep waters and smooth volcanic pebbles.

Nea Moni of Chios

Mentioned on
Monastery
Outdoor Activities
Nea Moni, an ancient monastery from the early 11th century, is located on a hidden spot amidst olive groves. Three monks with a divine vision convinced the emperor of Byzantium to provide funds for constructing a magnificent church. The monastery boasts of some of the finest examples of preserved mosaic art in Byzantine churches during the middle ages. At its peak, it accommodated around 2000 monks and served as one of the most important monasteries on the island.
In this monastery, during the massacre of Chios by the Turks on Easter Sunday 2nd April 1822, nearly 3500 people - mainly children and women - had come to seek refuge. Most of these people and the monks of the monastery were slaughtered by the Turks. Some of these victims’ bones are kept in the monastery.
Dr. Nantia Iakovidou — Google review
One of the 3 unesco heritage monasteries in Greece. You have to follow the brown signs, because otherwise the maps can lead you along gravel roads. The monastery itself is very beautiful and you can see the skulls of the monks killed as a result of the mass murder by the Turks. is another monastery. The hiker has a very beautiful view and photo opportunities. The monastery itself is free, if you want to visit the museum part, it costs 4 euros for an adult and 2 euros for a child. The monastery is open in the morning at 7:00 a.m., closed for a while during the day and open again in the evening.
Marek Lohi — Google review
Beautiful, serene, and reverent are just a few of the many words that come to mind as you walk around and through these premises. We arrived on Saturday afternoon and discovered that it opened at 4:00 pm. Since we had a good 30-minutes on our hand we explored the surrounding area and it too was quite peaceful and scenic.
Shahid Hussain — Google review
UNESCO world heritage site. Beautiful scenery, beautiful church. Interesting history. Free entrance
Pamela Prezas — Google review
An very important and old monastery from the beginning of the second millenium, around 1040 AD. Three monks had a dream and witnessed a miracle at that time and then persuaded the future emperor of Byzantium, to give them the money to build a glorious church at the site of the miracle. It has some of the oldest and best preserves mosaics of Byzantine churches of the middle ages. At one time it houses 2000 monks. It includes the bones and skeletons of Greeks who were murdered by Turks during the Greek uprising against the Ottoman Empire.
Dino Koutsolioutsos — Google review
A lovely, quiet monastery to visit. In addition to the main church there are two small museums displaying items from the community. In the morning it can be a bit crowded with guests. We recently visited in the early evening and it was a much more peaceful experience.
Peter O'Donnell — Google review
Well worth a visit to this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The drive up is very scenic. Read up a bit before your visit to get the most out of this amazing place.
35RedBackpack — Google review
Nea Moni is the most beautiful monastery in Chios and a "must see" site. It is a peaceful place that evokes a sense of reverence and inspiration. The monastery was built during the middle Byzantine period, in the 11th century, between the years 1042 and 1056, and was dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It was declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, along with the monasteries of Daphni (near Athens) and Hosios Loukas (near Delphi). All the three are decorated with superb marble works as well as mosaics on a gold background. The monastery was considered one of the best-known and most famous of the Aegean monasteries in the past, and it contained at its peak about 800 monks, but its heyday ended in the 19th century, following two big disasters: Chios massacre that was perpetrated by the Turks during the Greek War of Independence, in March 1822. A massacre during which tens of thousands of the residents of the island were brutally murdered by the Ottoman army, including 4,100 people (most of them women and children) who were murdered in the Monastery itself. The second event was the big earthquake that struck the island on April 3, 1881. (Magnitude of 7.3 on the Richter scale) and destroyed some sections of the monastery. The site is held today by three monks and it is highly recommended to visit there!
Y.H. — Google review
Monastery is beautiful. They said monks lived there and they take care of themselves. You have to see. In 1881 earthquake some parts of the Monastery was destroyed. You have to see

One of the islands must-see attractions with a lot of history. A little bit of reading beforehand will help you a lot. We visited in June and there were no guides around at the time. While in the area I highly recommend you visit Anavatos as well as it's only a 20min drive. Be sure to check your time before you go as it's closed between 1-4 PM.

Specialty Museums
The Chios Mastic Museum provides exhibits that showcase the production and utilization of mastic tree resin, as well as its role in local history and culture. The museum provides an informative experience with well-designed displays that explain how the people of Chios have made a living from this plant for centuries. The building itself is modern and offers a great view of the surroundings. Visitors can see historical machines in action to understand how they were used in the past.
The museum is fantastic place how learn how chios people produce mastic. The location of the building has a great view and the building structure is modern and cool looking. The people at reception are helpful and direct you how you should walk around. There are historical machines and they let you active some of them. It is a great feeling to see how their systems work. After you complete the travel in the building, there is also outside museum, you should take a walk to see the trees and get information more.

Comprehensive history, well laid out on hilltop affording a magnificent view & an understanding of this most rare little gem. Beautifully kept surrounding flora & friendly staff. No visitor should miss it!

The museum tells you all about the history of Chios as a mastic producer. The staff is very friendly. After the visit you can enjoy a drink (with mastic) at the terrace which provides an amazing view
Eleni Van de Rydt — Google review
This was my first time visiting a Greek island. I wasn’t familiar with Mastic until I moved to Türkiye, but after visiting Chios and visiting the museum I became a Mastic expert. Here you will learn how mastic influenced the culture of the community in the island and it’s important role in geopolitics. Don’t forget to buy something at the store, and explore all areas of the museum.
Gustavo J. Santamaria E. — Google review
I learned a lot. It's a really nice place. I'm giving it 4 stars because the cashier sent us to the garden first, which made no sense. It was about 30 mins in that we realized we were doing the museum backwards. Ignore the cashier's advice and go through the front. It's a wonderful experience if you do that. Also, this is the first reasonably priced museum gift shop that I've ever seen.
Ryan Shillington — Google review
So comprehensive and well-executed history of mastiha: dioramas, displays, educational films, social history (costumes, customs, life under foreign occupation over centuries), ELMA gum manufacturing implements, I could go on and on. The gift shop/cafe will satiate your taste for health products and healthy food. I enjoyed a great lunch with a panoramic view of Chios' arid hillsides and groves of Mastiha trees with Pyrgi in the distance. A great experience and well worth the drive.
Angela M — Google review
Exceptional museum, the quality of the exhibits is outstanding and so is the audio visual part of the exhibition. I particularly enjoyed the interactive experience. It is evident that much thought and love has gone into the creation of this museum. The architecture of the structure is awe inspiring, and the harmonic use of materials such as concrete, wood and stone paired together with its incredible, amphitheatric location creates a unique feel. Every space of the exhibition is accessible to wheelchairs through ramps and elevators. The café offers an array of authentic beverages.

Kostas Gaitanos — Google review
Excellent museum that also sells authentic mastic product. Quality of exhibits & audio visual material is great. Recommend you visit if ever on Chios Island
Helen Dooley — Google review
Absolutely remarkable! A super must visit. The Museum is located in the Mastichochoria of Southern Chios, the only place in the world where the mastic tree is cultivated and produces the mastíha resin. Traditional mastic cultivation continues to be alive today and is an element both of the inhabitants’ identity and of the locality’s history. Fantastic experience, very well organized. Don't miss the other section, dedicated to the Greeks of the Minor East.
Nick Chrysikopoulos — Google review
It is a must visit location in Chios Island. It is only place where mastic has been grown for centuries. You can see mastic trees around and learn about the history of mastic and Chios Island itself. There are sometimes temporary exhibitions, you can ask when you buy the ticket. Entrance is 4 Euro per person. Unfortunately there are no buses from Pyrgi, you have to walk or take a taxi.
Özgür Tomakin — Google review
A very modern museum about the production of mastic !!! It is a must visit for someone so as to understand the history and the architecture of the area of Mastichochoria.
Vasilios Moschos — Google review
The Chios Mastic Museum is located in the Mastichochoria (literally: mastic villages), a group of medieval villages in Southern Chios, the only site in the Mediterranean where the mastic tree, or Pistacia lentiscus var. Chia, is cultivated; called by its generic name of skínos in Greek, this is an endemic variety of pistacia plant from which mastíha (gum mastic) is produced. The Chios Mastic Museum aims to showcase the production history of the mastic tree’s cultivation and the processing of its resin, which it integrates into the cultural landscape of Chios. Through the prism of UNESCO’s inclusion of traditional mastic cultivation on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2014, emphasis is given to the diachronicity and sustainability of this product of Chios.
Cromex Makine ve Dis Ticaret Ltd. Sti. — Google review
The timber and steel structure of the museum is a showpiece of its own. The museum overlooks a striking Aegean landscape. Entrance fee is 4 euros per adult. The exhibit is well curated, it has both great static and interactive information about the history of Chios and mastic production. It is great to see how a culture forms itself around a product such as mastic. The Cafe/Museum Shop is disappointing. I would like to see more mastic oriented goods to be sold. Nevertheless, grab a coffee and enjoy the scenery.

Hotzas, a taverna with a rich history dating back to 1882, is nestled in a captivating courtyard. Originally established as a distillery and liquor store for the Linos family, this charming establishment has been transformed into an inviting dining destination. With talented chef Yiannis Linos at the helm, Hotzas offers an enticing blend of local Chios and Constantinopolitan influences.
Amazing space, full of history! The food extremely delicious, creative (we ate beans with mandarin!!!!). Totally new tastes and combinations! Fast service and kind staff. The prices more that great for the meal we had! Do not miss it, it's a MUST!!!

Food is always delicious in this old tavern of the island. A very nice hidden backyard fits many tables and hungry guests. Slow, bad service is to blame for the missing fifth star. 2 waiters struggle to serve too many customers, and food gets served un accordingly, with main courses arriving on the table before salads and appetizers. Anyway, a restaurant you must visit!

Excellent food and genuine hospitality in this family run establishment! The taverna only opens its doors once every few days depending on the bookings and usually services the returning patrons.
Sincoolian — Google review
One of the best, if not the best, restaurants on the island. It is truly a culinary delight. Some of the dishes I recommend are the eggplant appetizer, which is both zesty and fruity, the zucchini fritters (κολοκυθοκεφτέδες), which are the best I've EVER tasted, the lamb chops/ribs, almost too many to list. The atmosphere is wonderful, with tables and chairs set up in an exterior garden/olive grove. The restaurant has been in the family for over 120 years, and as well as they take care of their customers, they should be around for as many or more. Definitely a multiple visit establishment...
Steven D Sideratos — Google review
If there were 6 stars, this place's cooking would deserve it! There is a very cozy and calm garden for the summer months, too. Service is kind. Be sure to reserve a table. Also note that this restaurant is 134 years old, existing since 1882, when the island was under Turkish occupation!

The best food on our journey so far! Not what you get in every restaurant. Every single dish had a special twist. Cannot recommend enough the grilled octopus (with extremely delicious lentil purée and caramelised red onions), the grilled sardines, the Meltemeki Salad with figs, parmesan and orange and the smoky, grilled aubergine with feta. Very friendly service and a spectacular location.

I had the most magical dinner of my dreams. My fiancé proposed to me after a beautiful dinner of fresh fish and octopus. The food was delicious but the service and gratitude from the owner will stay with me forever. They reserved us the best table (which are all amazing as they are waterfront), had a bouquet of freshly cut flowers awaiting me, and even filmed us in our special moment. I cannot recommend this restaurant more, the food is great, the atmosphere is unbeatable and the people are truly special. We will surely return when traveling to Chios in the future.

Do yourself a favour and get the seafood salad. My portion was a half size because I was dining alone but the full size is double what’s pictured. What a beautiful spot with wonderful and attentive staff (bonus, spoke English fluently).

Great sea food. Everything was perfect. The owner is a really nice lady. She even tells you to stop ordering because the portions are too large and you don't know :) Paid €47 for the whole lot you see in the photos including the ouzo. You can have your table on the beach as well. This was my second time and there will definitely be a third visit. Must go if you visit Chios!

Everything was delicious ! Best food I’ve had in Chios so far. We had the stuffed squid , orzotto with clams , seafood salad , Greek salad and ouzo. The portions are big and fulfilling, the staff is nice and friendly. It’s a down to earth establishment with tables on the beach. Nothing fancy but has a great view . Would highly recommend it for an early dinner where you can enjoy the view before it gets dark .

Good food and even better view, you're eating your dinner only a few feet away from the sea. The service was slow and lots of fish are deep fried which is not mu style. Other than that, it's good.
Melike Nur Gezgin — Google review
Having read the reviews and seen the menu, we were excited to visit this place as a party of five. We were lucky to get a table down by the water as the restaurant was very busy for a Thursday evening. When the owner came to set up our table and take our order he did not appear to want to engage in conversation with us. When we asked him how his day had been and commented on how busy the restaurant was, he actually asked us to speed things up! The order was taken without a smile or any further interaction. Our meals arrived in staggered fashion and not together, so that some people had finished eating before others had even started. The salads arrived as starters, although ordered to go with other dishes. There was no check back on any of our food, as the items were delivered by staff who were running food, but not taking orders. No apology ever came for the half hour wait for a plate of fried shrimps (which were definitely not worth the wait) and there was no service whatsoever to see if we wanted anymore drinks or condiments. Two courses, one round of drinks, and no mention of dessert. What should have been the best meal of our holiday so far, will be remembered as our worst. If you go, and it is busy, try somewhere else.

Phenomenal food. It was super cold outside and we were welcomed in to this wonderful restaurant. After a lot of Greek good food we wanted something different and we were spoiled. The antipasti we ordered were magnificent. And the homemade ravioli was superb. Together with good drinks and ending with the best tiramisu. This place is a must to go to when you had a lot of Greek food and you want to try something different.

The best choice for Italian food who wants to get something different than seafood in the island. Portians are of big size; really big & service is quick and ingredients are good in quality and quantity as well. I recommend cherry tomato and basil pizza and porcini mushroom truffle risotto for truffle lovers.

We read reviews about this place before going there and most of them were recommending it. We hadn't booked a table so we had to sit somewhere almost indoor. The food we ordered was pasta and some salad. Both of them were great. The portions were huge. The house wine they offer is smooth. The only downside is that you tend to wait a long time if it's crowded. Oh and the bread we got at the start was outstanding.
M. A. (Manochino) — Google review
Instead of going for seafood (we couldn't find any good seafood restaurant in Chios) we opted for Italian and tried The Pastards. Atmosphere is cozy, the staff is friendly and service is OK. We tried pasta and liked it. Portion is more than enough. Wine selection is limited but so what?! We'll definitely come back.

The food here is surprisingly good. The pasta, the houmous with grilled veggies, the chicken ballotina... portions are generous too! The service is very good and the fact that tables outside are not on the street next to the traffick gives it an advantage compared to all other restaurants nearby. Prices are very good especially when compared to the food quality and overall experience. Definitely worth trying if you re into Italian cuisine and find yourself in chios Town.

Offering Oriental and Asia Minor delicacies alongside perfectly grilled meats, owner-chef Michael impresses diners with his culinary expertise. Noteworthy dishes include Daughter tits and Kontosouvli, although there are plenty of other delectable options available.
The garden ambiance is enchanting, providing the perfect backdrop for a delightful evening. The live music elevated our night, creating a lively atmosphere. Food was high on average. In order to provide transportation, it is necessary to reach through narrow streets where only one vehicle can pass. There is a city view. Looks nice. We didn't order when we saw the prices on the menu.

Greek tavern with great view and interesting delicacies. Some plates are very good, others are not. Service is slow and probably the biggest problem of this otherwise nice restaurant. Do try the kontosouvli!
Nikolas K — Google review
That was our first visit to Chios and we experienced 3 different restaurants for dinner (To Apomero, Tria Aderfia and To Bachari). To Apomero was the most “local” one with a great view. There was also the set up for live music but it was not on the program when we were there. The atmosphere is nice but I can not say the same for service and the food. Mastello cheese was good. Boiled octopus was average and unfortunately “chef’s special fried squid” was really dissapointing due to too much galette flour (breadcrumbs). Overall, I would recommend the place but from my point of view, it is not a “must”.
Soner Arıcı — Google review
Located up on a hill overlooking the airport and the sea this place offers great views on a large terrace that can seat many. The dishes we had (the smoked eggplant dip & Grandpa's Octopus, to name 2) were all prepared quite nicely and were very tasty. I would recommend this place for their dinner food. If you are a family with young kids then you're in luck, they have a small playground here too keep them occupied and happy while you're waiting for the food, or still digesting after it.

Turned up on May day, without a reservation. The guys managed to fit me in to an already heavily crowded restaurant, with reserved tables constantly arriving. I am always slightly underwhelmed by Greek meat dishes, when compared to Cyprus, but Apomero was up to the challenge. Beautifully cooked pork in the oven with lemon potatoes with a Cretan salad. Throw in a tremendous view, and I have to award 5 stars for this particular visit. I will definitely return to sample much more of the menu
Adamantios Harrison — Google review
I had high hopes for my visit to To Apomero, as I had made a reservation three days in advance. Unfortunately, my experience was far from satisfactory. When we arrived, the staff seemed completely unaware of our reservation and even doubted our claim. We were made to feel like liars and it was an embarrassing situation. Moreover, the seating arrangement was appalling. We were placed next to the restroom, kitchen, and even a trash can. The constant traffic and unpleasant smells made by it impossible to enjoy our meal. What was most distressing was the appalling treatment we received from the staff. Instead of apologizing for their mistake, they blamed us for the reservation mix-up. The lack of empathy and customer service was disheartening. As a customer, I expected much better treatment and I professionalism from a restaurant. Sadly, our experience was nothing short of a disaster. I cannot recommend To Apomero based on my experience, and I urge others to be cautious when considering this restaurant. I hope the management takes this feedback seriously and works to improve their reservation system and customer service.

What a great restaurant. Many locals dining there was our clue. Relaxed, great menu, and the food was really really good. It was not expensive at all with good quality. I want to try other options on the menu on my next visit to Chios 👍😋😋

Amazing experience. I had the best salad in island. Of course all other foods were so tasty too. Highly recommended. We come to Chios very often. This is my favorite restaurant as of now. Enjoy the food :)

Food was good. The wine as well. Unfortunately horrible service level. Both waiters were impolite, forgot several orders and one of them dropped a whole glass of wine on me! Nevertheless the same server asked me how much I want to tip when paying the bill 😂 In my world tip is something you deserve due to hard work. Not something costumers pay just because. I do not recommend this place! A lot of better options on the same street.

Good food, kind staff, fast service. We ordered grilled octopus, stuffed zucchini, salad, fried feta and ouzo. All of them was tasty. The portions also quite big. Definitely recommended

I say absolutely amazing, we ordered shrimp pasta, beef orzo hmmmm hmmmm meat was sooooo soft, eggplant with meatballs! Phenomenal… the seasoning, pasta consistency and the taste, amount of salt and spices used was deliciousness to its maximum … right by the sea with amazing view, prices were reasonable. we totally recommend this place.

One of the top restaurants in Chios, I never miss to visit this place every summer I come. Usually crowded, it’s safer to reserve a table. Don’t miss eggplant rolls and Liver
