The Hindola Mahal, located in Mandu, is a part of a ruined palace complex that served as a historic meeting place. It features ogee arches and a large main hall. The palace was built alongside Jahaz Mahal to showcase the engineering excellence of ancient times, with underground wells making it even more elaborate.
Hindola Mahal – meaning Swing palace is so named due to its sloping side walls. The Hindola Mahal might have been constructed during the reign of Hushang Shah
Amol Bhandarkar — Google review
Adjoining the famous Jahaj Mahal, Hindola Mahal forms Parrt of the heritage royal buildings complex in Mandu. This historical building has slanting outer walls at an angle of 77° and thus it presumably gives the look of a swing. Frankly I could not visualize it as a swing. That apart, the building looks beautiful. There are other buildings. The surrounding are very well maintained. Adjascent to Hindola Mahal, there are other smaller monuments worth seeing.
Arun Gupta — Google review
It was made for queens as residence and swings were put specially for rainy season Champa bawdi is 5 floors down it was an escape root for queens during war

Hindola Mahal – meaning Swing palace is so named due to its sloping side walls. The Hindola Mahal might have been constructed during the reign of Hushang Shah about 1425 C.E. but may date to the end of the 15th century during the reign of Ghiyas al-Din. It is one of a set buildings making up the royal palace complex at Mandu, which consists of the Jahaz Mahal, the Hindola Mahal, the Taveli Mahal, and the Nahar Jharokha. The Hindola Mahal may have been used as an audience chamber. The plan of the Hindola Mahal is a T-shape, though examination of the exterior walls leads to the conclusion that the crossbar was added later. The vertical mast of the plan consists of one main hall measuring 30 by 18 metres (98 by 59 feet) and 12 metres (39 feet) high. Its lateral walls are 3 metres (9.8 feet) thick and further reinforced by massive inclined buttresses that angle over 77 degrees. These highly inclined buttresses give the Hindola Mahal (Swinging Palace) its name. They also neutralize the outward force of five massive arches that once supported the large flat roof of the main hall. On each exterior of the long sides of the main hall are six recessed arches which hold doors in their lower sections and three slabs of open-work stone windows to let in air and light. A high wall holds battlements on the roof of the building.

This mahal is placed beside Jahaz mahal… the huge still stable and strong structure gives the proof of engineering excellence in ancient times… Underground wells makes it even complicated… One should not miss this place if visited Mandu.

Jahaz Mahal or Ship palace at Mandu is beautiful and great depiction of palace life of Muslim rulers of India It is built between Munj and Kapur water tanks and presents the sight of ship anchored in water. It's beautiful view is seen from upper most terrace of Taveli Mahal Right time to visit this place is monsoon season when tanks are full with water and surrounding are lush green Moonlit night is another good time to visit With light and sound show now started it's a perfect itinerary to plan for Jahaz Mahal has a mention in the memoir of emperor Jahangir that during his stay at Mandu his beloved queen Nur Jahan famed in history for her exceptional beauty used to reside in this palace. Hindola Mahal is also located in same complex alongwith Taveli Mahal A small museum is also located inside Taveli Mahal Overall a good place to visit alongwith your family and kids

Hindola Mahal where hindola means swing. This mahal was built for swings during rainy seasons by mughals. It is located inside jahaz mahal.
abhi chauhan — Google review
Hindola, meaning swing, named so because of the slant walls of the palace that resemble the swing shape. The story of how this Mahal had both Hindu and Muslim queens living together worshipping their respective deities in turns still runs. The fact that you can stand right where the cultural events were held, and can see the seatings of the royals felt surreal.
Tanvi Shetty — Google review
The entire fort complex within the Jahaj Mahal of mandu is steeped in history, it's not only absolutely stunning but also such an experience. Hindola Mahal is undergoing certain upkeep work and that's great, but the place itself is very beautiful, the architecture is to die for and the light and sound show at night is also projected here, such a great experience.

According to a Sanskrit inscription, Mandu was a 6th century fortified town, that was established as a fort capital in the 11th century by the Parmar rulers. This ancient city tells stories of a romance between Prince Baz Bahadur and Rani Roopmati and has several palaces, tombs, mosques, pavilions and rock-cut caves.
NITIN — Google review
The whole complex of Mandu is so so rich and so beautiful. Every monuments has a story behind it on which it stands tested against the tide of centuries and different kings and their kingdom. After hearing the story and the purpose of the complex it's all worth it. Would recommend blindly to anyone to visit this place and feel the heritage first hand. Kudos to ASI again for the maintenance of the heritage so that the future can witness this beauty as it is.

Hindola Mahal is Artistic, Beautiful Unique Structure ! Hindola Mahal Built by Hushang Shah, probably around A.D. 1425 as a Durbar hall. The walls are inordinately thick and slope like those of a castle. The slope of over 77 degrees gives a swinging appearance to the building, hence the name. The plan is 'T' shaped. The upright stem being the main hall (which was built first), and the cross bar is a transverse portion added later. The structure was probably supposed to have the zenana place as another storey above the main hall, which would explain the bulk and strength of the walls. Jahaj Mahal got its name because it looks like a ship. They claim that the palace is actually surrounded by water and takes on the appearance of a ship during periods of severe rain when the nearby water bodies begin to overflow. It's a beautiful piece of architecture and demands your attention. Monsoon season made it appear much more lovely. The ideal time to view this gem in Mandu is between august and September.

One of the best place to visit in Mandu. Its luxurious palace built in shape of ship and surrounded by lakes. Also known as Ship that Never Sailed. The entire premise is maintained in good conditions. Plenty of car parking available at distance of 500 meters. The walk from the parking to palace is worth while enjoy delicious local food and fruits being sold by street vendors. Enjoy the structural beauty and landscape.

Only difficult part is the walk to the monument from the parking area.

Very good place to visit. However, it is highly recommended to visit the baz Bahadur fort and Rani Roopmati pavilion in the vicinity. One full day is ideal to roam around different monuments in Mandu. Lot of eating options of local food around the fort. However MP tourism properties are most recommended.

An architectural marvel, and probably one of the best maintained archeological heritage sites in India, with a beautiful manicured garden in its front. With water bodies on two sides, it presumably gives the look of an anchored ship and thus named Jahaz (ship) Mahal. Jahaz Mahal is one of the most prominent and beautiful part of the entire cluster of historical monuments in Mandu. This stunningly beautiful monument deserves a place in the list of world heritage sites. It's a two storeyed building, and we got an excellent view from the rooftop. There are approximately 35 steps (wide with reasonable height) to reach the rooftop. Both me and my wife are Sr. Citizens and could comfortably take the steps.

Limited parking available on side. Approach road is often blocked by vehicles parked in front of dhabas which include tractor and water tanker. You can do nothing but wait for them to finish their job. Ticket window is located on the right of the gate. On entry there's a museum on the right and guest rooms on top of it over looking the Kapoor taal. Jahaz Mahal is on your left. From here you can over look the other lake. Little ahead ther are couple of Bawadis, Hindola Mahal, Shahi Hamam, the royal palace. There's resting place under trees. Earlier it had a cafeteria but noe closed. You can eat your tiffin here. Outside you have a few curio shops and Dhabas. Here you can get local delicacies. Dall Bafala/ Baati or Daal Paaniye (Bafala or Baati are made of wheat flour whereas Paniye are made of Maize flour and heavy). You can indulge in pleasure 😊

Hoshang Shah's tomb is situated in the middle of the courtyard of the majestic mausoleum, surrounded by square-shaped walls. One can enter the mausoleum from the entrance gate, (which is built on a square plan with a marble dome) in the middle of the northern wall. The tomb of Hoshang shah is a grand construction, having a square plan and a dome. It is built on a basement of remarkable width and height. The entire building including the dome is covered in marble, providing majestic atmosphere. It is interesting to note that the main entrance and stairs are situated in the south side, the other side of the entrance to the courtyard. In the four corners of the domed roof, there are constructions with battlements and small domes. They are above the basements, which are built along with a dome. There are plant decorations extending from the edge of the roof and the eaves. They are coloured in red and black, accenting the marble building. Hindu patterns can be observed in the decorations. Considering these and other patterns inside the tomb chamber, we can assume there was involvement of Hindu workmen from the neighbouring towns.

About 6 km from the famous Jahaj Mahal, Baz Bahadur's Palace is another important monument in Mandu. Excellent acoustics in one of the galleries in the Palace is a testimony of Baz Bahadur's love for music. Another amazing element is the Water management system in the tower. A bonus is a good view of the famous Roopmati Pavalion from the Palace, especially for those who find it difficult to climb up to the Pavalion.

Built in 1508 by sultan of Malwa it’s next to Rani Roopmati Pavilion. Made by Persian architect it is simple structure and not very ornate but two things stand out- acoustics and water management of the palace. It is said that both Baz Bahadur and Queen Roopmati were great music lovers which bonded them together. They sang in the hall sitting about 50 feet apart but the voices would be heard clearly. As for water, it was lifted from the river below and stored above in a remarkable way. Worth a visit if you’re in Mandu now called Mandav.
