The 250 year old Ahilya Devi Fort, a heritage property, sits high above the sacred Narmada River, surrounded on the other sides by Maheshwar Town. The panoramic views of Narmada Driver and the ghats are breathtaking. Replete with myths and legends, Ahilya Fort offers guests a chance to walk down the historic paths and also offer prayers at the historic temples. It takes about 2 hours to reach here by road from Indore, via the scenic and historic Jam Gate route. The heritage property has a total of 19 rooms, with two tents. The staff and service excellent. The food is sumptuous and the meals are served at different places in the property. Most of the ingredients are sourced from the large organic vegetable garden. The property has a pool surrounded by shady trees, where one can relax. For those with physical mobility problems, it may be cumbersome to access the rooms on the first floor, since there are no lifts here.

The fort is very Beautiful and the scenery of river Narmada is just a eye catching and so satisfying. 3 star because no proper Identification on road to indicate the way for fort and temple also need more cleanses and maintenance in the fort. Hope so MP tourism will do that.

An absolutely amazing place with so much of not so distant and pivotal history of central India. The elaborate architecture and beautiful carvings make it a unique place. Am absolute joy. If you have trouble walking, this place is not so friendly for you. Fair bit of up and down. However, all worth it, I believe. Having a guide allows you to deeply appreciate the history and the context. The temple, the high seat, the banyan tree (siddhvad), the statue of Ahalya Devi, all something to look forward to.

It takes at least three hours to complete an excellent experience at this location.

I went to Maheshwar fort on an office trip. I believe it's a good place to hangout at with a group of people or friends or family. It's old and rustic , an architectural beauty. it was a little untidy but not too much. Just a word of advice whenever you visit Maheshwar fort, visit during winter because it gets really humid here and it gets harder to climb the stairs and wander the whole fort . Take a good amount of water with you if you go during the summers.

Just about 95 KMs south of Indore lies this beautiful place, a hidden gem. About 2.5 hours of drive through the ghats was wonderful. The entire complex has a significant historical background and geat heritage value... it served as the capital of Rani Ahilyabai Holkar in the 18th century, with her Rajwada (residence) within the fort. Ahilyeshwar temple, also within the fort, is incredibally beautiful with amazing sculptures. The fort is situated on the banks of Narmada, with well laid and beautifully maintained steps leading to the river banks. A walk along the ghats was extremely refreshing. We were able to have a feel of the entire complex in about 3 hours' time. However, you can spend as much time as you wish to.... you will enjoy every minute you spend in this serene and peaceful area. Caution : There are a lot of steps, up and down, all around. Though both me and my wife are sr citizens, we were able to cope with reasonably well. However, this factor should be kept in mind by those who have difficulty in taking steps. Notwithstanding this, one can always avoid taking too many steps and enjoy the beauty of the place, as seen from the courtyards. A must visit place.

This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva built in Nagar Style. This temple is testimony to the architectural skills of the Maratha workmen who constructed this temple on the bank of Narmada River. It took 34 years to build this temple and at a cost of 1.5 crore Indian rupees. at that time it was huge cost. This temple is visible from long distance due to its strategic location. It's such a beautiful place and a hidden gem. Very beautiful and well kept ghat. There are multiple mandirs in the vicinity. I was lucky to be part of the evening Aarti which was done at 8 pm. There are different boat rides available at reasonable rates. A visit to 'Sahasradhara' in a boat is a must. See the waterfall likes videos for your persual. Drawback: only thing missing was the peaceful environment that I was expecting. In the evening it was really crowded with multiple people selling joy rides on the ghat. They were playing loud Bollywood music and people dancing on video booths making instagram reels.

Rajwada of Maheshar is built by the Holkars of the Maratha Empires about two centuries ago, which reflects in Maratha Architectural style dominantly , but it also show case Mughal and French trends.13 feet high Rani Ahilyaa Bai statue standing tall right at the main entrance is the special attraction of Rajwada. Rajwada is the place where Ahilyabai use to sit for administration and justice for all. Rajwada complex is best approachable from the north entrance of the fort which is called as Ahilya Dwar, one of the five gateways of the fort. Rajwada area is like a courtyard of large house. Rajwada is a two stored wooden building. The entrance to the building opens into an open corridor, surrounded by a pillared verandah on all sides. As we enter we can see an Idol of Sri Krishna flanked by two cows. The open space in the middle is full of greenery with plants like Garden. The rooms on the upper floor served as the royal residence while lower were meant for guests. At present visitors are not allowed to first floor. We can only visit lower floor where there is a small museum exhibiting objects used by Ahilya bhai. There are boards displayed which tells us briefly about Holkar's, Ahilya Bai and her works towards development of Holkar Kingdom. If you spend some time here you can understand the history of Holkar's and greatness of Rani Ahilyabai. Guests are available to show case entire fort and all nearby temples. Special attraction of the Lower floor is Rani Ahilyabai Gaddi. In one of the open corridor Rani Ahilyabai used to have her Gaddi of the court, which is left to the main entrance when you are entering in to the Rajwada. This is where she sat and listened to her people, and did justice. Now thew is Gaddi surrounded by wooden pillars with a cotton mattresses to showcase those days arrangements as is and Rani Statue is arranged here to get feel of those days. By seeing this arrangement I understood the simplicity of the Rani Ahilyabai. After visiting Rajwada Lower floor come out from the main entrance and turn towards your right while exit and there is one more entrance which takes you towards the place where Unique rituals that was put in place by Rani Ahilyabai herself and that continues till date. In her days, 108 brahmins used to create 125000 miniature Shivalinga's every day from black earth, worship them and then offer them to the Narmada River. Today, 11 Brahmins create about 15000 Shivalinga's every day, worship them, and then offer them to Narmada River. This pooja happens every day between 08:00 to 10:00 in the morning. we went there in the afternoon to we were missed the same. please plan your visit to Rajwada in the morning to witness the same.
