Chinon

Chinon is a commune in the Indre-et-Loire department, Centre-Val de Loire, France. The traditional province around Chinon, Touraine, became a favorite resort of French kings and their nobles beginning in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Wikipedia.

At the picnic area of a family-run chateau in the Loire Valley, just a short drive from Chinon, visitors can indulge in a delightful experience. The day begins with a tour of the AOC CHINON vineyard, where Cabernet Franc and Chenin blanc are grown. Guests then explore the cellar before enjoying a wine tasting session in an elegant historic room.

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Château d'Ussé is a stunning 17th-century castle in France, with turrets and white walls that allegedly served as inspiration for the story of Sleeping Beauty. The blue-slate roofs add to its beauty as you approach it. The castle is rich in history and features highlights like the Sleeping Beauty tower, making it interesting for children too. In September, the gardens were still pretty with blooming flowers.
Enjoyed this visit. The bringing to life of the Sleeping Beauty story gave points of interest within the castle. Also, the antique clothing exhibition helped you to imagine the era.
Ann Attwood — Google review
It’s a really nice castle. Your dog is allowed inside and outside you can take him everywhere with you in the castle. Worth to visit with children too. It has the story of the sleeping beauty.
Evy C — Google review
An outstanding Chateau and gardens which were the inspiration for the fairytale 'Sleeping Beauty'. I would highly recommend visiting this chateau as it is truly world class and amazing.
Tom Woodroffe — Google review
Beautiful chateau with a rich history. There was a huge historical play acting meeting that was held next door. It made parking and the visit a little more complicated than expected.
Rana Crevier — Google review
A castle from the fairytales. Follow the sleeping beauty story and learn lots of history in this very nice castle, with a beautiful garden and old chapel. Across the castle, near the parking lot, you can take a break with some good food or just a coffee. Put d'Ussé on the list while visiting Loire.
Oana Leanca — Google review
Quite charming, but really crowded in the high season. The sleeping beauty tower was fun and the gardens are quite well kept and very pretty. The parking is free, but very small, could be difficult to find a parking place here. Also, not many food options around.
Kath Ch — Google review
The castle is full of history, and the Sleeping Beauty tower is one of their highlights and it would be interesting for children. Their garden was very pretty even in September, and there were still lots of nice flowers blooming. It is definitely worth the visit. It wasn’t too crowded in September, and there were plenty of nice photo spots. What a lovely castle!

Not quite as open as Chateau Villandry, but this is also a chateau we really enjoyed. It's in a lovely setting with a moat and bridge leading up to it. There aren't that many rooms for public view but the chapel on the grounds is beautiful. They have a terrific display of costumes set up throughout that makes it nice and they also allow you down to the absolute bottom part down in the foundations that is cool and spooky
Michelle Mitton — Google review
This is again another lovely Chateau from the Lourie Valley. Parked just outside, plenty of space most days. We got there at 9.30 so we could park the motorhome under a tree. There was a sign advising against it, but it looked OK and it was a hot day. I suspect I would have not if it was windy. You can walk around most parts with the dog. Not a great deal to see in the actual chateau but loads of other places to look around and still lovely gardens.
Ricky Clark — Google review
The Château is impressive from the outside. The chateau, chapel and gardens. It’s not in anyway disabled friendly. That’s why it’s 3 star for me. It’s worth a visit with the rich history that it encompasses. The prison was small, I wondered if this was only part of it as the chateau is continuing to be restored. The place that inspired the sleeping beauty fairytale , it was written here.
Janet Smith — Google review
Castle definitely worth the detour. It is super photogenic and amazing to look at. I love the part where you visit the castle and follow the story of sleeping beauty. Just make sure to pay attention to the signs or you will not do the story in the right order. The castle itself is nice, but there is not a lot to see in it. The owners still live in it so access is somewhat restricted. Outside the castle, there are a few other places to visit, but they don’t take a long time. Overall, happy I did it and would do again.

Forteresse Royale de Chinon is a fortress complex above the town, originally built in 945 and later restored by Emperor Napoleon III. The highlight of the visit is the clock tower, standing over 115 feet high. Visitors can explore historical topics using provided tablets to watch videos and learn about the site's connections to Joan of Arc and the Knights Templar. Additionally, there are interactive features like a histopad for virtual tours and a treasure hunt that kids can enjoy.
Good place to discover historical topics. They give you tablets to see everything from the past. You can find so many films captured in this palace like NARNIA, GAME OF THRONES, LE HOBBIT, HANGER GAMES DE GARY ROSS, you can see the view of the rivers and buildings and the bridges and the forest from the top top of the palace. Nice place to discover historical information from 1300 till 2022. I totally recommend it.

It was a very interesting castle/fortress to visit, and the views were spectacular. It’s got some significant stairs, but if you’re able to get to the top of the tower, the view is worth it. We came on a Sunday so it was quiet. I loved learning about the history and how people used to live. I enjoyed the interactive tablet that accompanied the self guided tour

A must visit. Beautiful castle. A interactive tablet is given to you upon entry. Fun for kids
Joshua Preece — Google review
This was one of the best places we went during our week around the Loire valley watching castles and so. From the beginning the place felt like interesting because of the lady at the reception explaining things, giving us a histopad which would allow us at certain points get a kind of video of how things might have been, I think in the fourteenth century (?) and provides you information, if you want to by clicking on the images. And it also had a treasure hunt integrated, which not only the kids had fun with! The fortress was big and is now mainly a ruin. But the place has been made/ kept in a way that you still can imagine the shape and grandness. The panorama from the towers, walls..is great. At several spots you can go with steps down inside the fortress and also walk through rooms. There is also in the middle a lot of grass with trees allowing for shadow and chairs are placed. A very nice outside kind if bar is available with also here very nice staff. The atmosphere in this place was so great and the staff as well.
icegini — Google review
A very nice place overlooking the ancient town. They have an histopad with really helps during the visit. But you have a lot stairs, towers and dungeons to climb up and down. So visit take 1-2 hours. Luckly there is a nice resting area in the middle.
R. Ant — Google review
Beautiful views and some magnificent trees. The visit is informative as well with the histopad.
Emily Sergienko — Google review
We went here with children and it was a good experience for everyone and took much longer than expected, which was good compared to the times we have paid to go somewhere and finished in a short period of time. If you are booking on line you skip the queue but remember to ask for your free histopad. It is a small tablet which triggers as you walk to different parts of the fortress, shows what the view would have been 600 years ago, from where you are standing etc. For children there is also a sticker challenge and collecting treasures on the pad. There are a lot of steps up and down the towers so go prepared for a good workout although not shown on the website there is a cafe serving sandwiches, cake, drinks etc
Lindsey Reece-Smith — Google review
This fortress overlooking the Vienne River and town of Vivone has a rich history of both English and French kings and princes dating all the way back to early mediaeval times for n the 11th century. Joan of Arc and The Knights Templar also feature in the history of this imposing building dominating the skyline above the mediaeval town. There is a fully accessible lift system of you don't want to or can't manage the short but steep walk up from the town. All the displays and history are accessible in all languages thanks to the use of digital displays and hand held tablets issues to help visitors understand what life would really have been like in the 11th - 16th centuries.

Very interesting castle, you can learn a lot about the life back in the day. The towers offer splendid views over the Chinon and the river and the courtyard is lovely, you can leisure on the grass or on the many chairs available.

Superb winery. Sebastián is incredibly knowledgeable and speaks perfect English. The chinon here is richly varied and a tasting is highly recommended. It was wonderful that our kids could roam freely while we enjoyed the wine. A memorable visit.

A beautiful family owned and operated château in the French countryside. We had a gorgeous day and really enjoyed it. First, we toured the winery and cellars. They provided the tour in both English and French to accommodate everyone. Then, we had a wine tasting with Sebastian which we loved (of course 🍷). A delightful private picnic lunch was provided overlooking the winery with delicious food and a bottle of their wine. Their kids were so nice to my son and he had a great time too!
Kelly M — Google review
We chose the wine tour and tasting (15 euros per person) for a group of 14 people. The guide was very excited about his family company and his English was perfectly understandable. There were lots of different wines at the tasting, varying from 2010 to 2020: 1 rosé, 5 types of red whine and 1 white wine. It was also possible to buy a bottle (750 mL) or a magnum (1.5 L). We had a great afternoon!
Sophie Langeveld — Google review
Warm welcome, followed by a bit of history about the gorgeous chateau owned by the family for 400+ years, then the vineyard and the cave. Learned about the wine and winemaking process. (My husband and I have both done wine tours in Tuscany and this one topped it by far) Following the tour we had a lovely tasting with Sebastian, accompanied by Biscuit, the handsomest chateau cat, (who took his job very serious). We then had picnic which was originally supposed to be outdoors in the vines but due to the rain, was under a patio space and was perfect, consisting of a lovely assortment of cheeses, a baguette, and meats with salad. This was the best way to spend a day in the Loire Valley. We highly recommend booking!!

Fantastic experience and great wines! Sebastian talks full of passion about the history of his family, the château and his excellent wines! After the tour we had a great lunch/picknick at the château…

Incredibly friendly family run winery. Really great tour of the vineyards and cave. Tasted some fabulous wines and ate a beautiful lunch of cheese, meats and salad. Best winery we visited.
Alex Gawley — Google review
My wife and I chose to do the Picnic in the Vines tour. Unfortunately, the weather in mid-May wasn't cooperating but it didn't dampen our time at the chateau. D'Arcy greeted us when we arrived and gave us a nice tour of the grounds, cellar, and winery, all the while giving us some background about their family, before heading back to the main building for our wine tasting. Their cute little dog, Dmitri, joined us for most of the tour. He followed us around the property and sat outside when we went in the cellar where he knew he wasn't allowed. Since the weather wasn't exactly picnic-friendly, we had lunch in one of the small buildings near the chateau. Dmitri decided to keep us company while we ate. The food was locally sourced and it was all fantastic! We really enjoyed it! The wine was great and we ended up buying a bottle of Cuvée Amiral (which made it back to Canada with us) along with a bottle of Les Georges (which we enthusiastically drank in Paris). Sébastian came to see us out at the end of our meal and it was great chatting with him. He was friendly, and funny, and really excited to hear that we had a good time! He and D'Arcy are great hosts and really made us feel welcome!

A visit to Château du Petit Thouars is without a doubt a highlight if visiting the Chinon area. I had a lovely afternoon visiting the beautiful estate and tasting the lineup of wines accompanied with local cheeses and terrines.
Elisa Crye — Google review
We had a lovely tour and tasting with D'Arcy. We were the only ones booked on so it was a private tour. It was great that we were able to ask all of our questions and get an incredibly personal experience. She suggested that it's not always a private tour but they tend to only have small groups. Very educational and wonderful that it truly is a family establishment that has been in the family for hundreds of years. Highly recommend!

L'ARDOISE CHINON is a contemporary eatery that serves traditional French bistro cuisine alongside delectable steaks accompanied by flavorful sauces. With its modern ambiance and outdoor terrace, it offers a unique dining experience. The overall quality of the food, wine selection, service, and menu is top-notch, creating an exceptional culinary adventure. Surprisingly, the bill was lower than anticipated for such elevated French dining standards. Reservations are recommended due to its popularity.
Very delicious meals and very good, pleasant and friendly service. If you are visiting Chinon we recommend you pay a visit to this lovely dog friendly restaurant.

Very courteous service and very delicious dishes were served to us, not to mention how elegantly the dishes were dressed. A great experience that I would suggest to anyone passing through the city.
Philip Mann — Google review
After ordering starters and mains the waiter asked us to choose a dessert, as we may not be able to order later!!! The Camembert starter was served with bread that was tough, neither fresh nor crispy. The Bearnaise sauce served with the steaks came in a small pot with barely enough for the first mouthful. The steaks were somewhat tough but edible. The French fries were fantastic.
Andrew McIntyre — Google review
I arrived at the location looking forward for a nice meal, at least this is what I was expecting from the reviews, and the waiter told me they are full, even though I could see at least 2 free tables, one of them which opened up as we entered the restaurant. Was it because we didnt speak french ? .. L.E. that was the problem, it was a waitress, not a waiter, that is the attitude every costumer should expect, the owner is always right, right ?. Instead of actually giving me a straight answer why that happened, the problem is that I said waiter instead of waitress. From your answer, I think it's better that you didnt have any free tables, we probably even ate better at the restaurant next door.

This restaurant is located in one of the oldest cities in Chinon, on the hill above the royal fortress. It opened its doors in 1930, and it features two rooms from the Belle Époque style. In winter, near the staircase, in summer on the terrace it's a great place to have a meal with friends or family. The service can be slow at times but the food here is always delicious.
OMG, this was the best meal in France. So original. So many flavors. And such a beautiful presentation. Staff was lovely and put up with our fractured French. The restaurant itself is located in a beautiful 15th century building which is warm and welcoming.

This is a gorgeous gem of a restaurant. Every dish was executed with care and elegance and so delicious! We ate in a lovely little salon with friendly and attentive wait staff who though frantically busy managed all with ease and a smile. Wine was delicious too. Exactly the experience and food you come to France for. Loved it, we went 2 nights in a row. Highly Recommended. ⭐️

Delicious. We didn’t have a reservation but they were able to seat us. I recommend calling ahead for a reservation. The service was typically slow but the food was delicious. They have a kids menu but you have to ask. The kids meal is sea bream with vegetables. Our daughter devoured the dish. I had the menu M with the fillet of beef wrapped in seaweed. It was scrumptious and tender.

This cosy and warm French bistro restaurant really surprised us! Situated in the incredibly quaint and wonderful town Chinon, Les Années 30 is a taste experience of the highest quality! Wonderful dishes, especially the foie gras with apricots. Friendly and approachable staff, as well as the other French guests who found it very enjoyable watching a bunch of Norwegians trying to figure out what cheeses to pick from a laaarge selection for the cheese course. Highly recommended!

Here is the first thing I want to say. If you are in a little French town like Chinon and everyone around you, in the dinning room speaks english - that is not a good sign- then you know you are in a touristy restaurant. Dinner for 2 for 120 Euros, I expected a spectacular meal but was not impressed at all. The highlight of the meal was the cheese platter, the selections were amazing. Everything else is little overpriced and just okay. Again the money is not the issue but really wanted to eat better food. I ordered filet mignon and the salmon marine. Just okay. Do more research to find a better spot.

We booked this restaurant for 8:30pm and we flew from Uk to Paris then drove to Chinon. Due to hold ups on the motorway we arrived in outskirts of Chinon 5 minutes late planning to go straight to restaurant, not even check in our hotel. Unfortunately the roads were closed due to a road race so we had to park further away and walk to the restaurant arriving 20 minutes late. Sadly we were not given opportunity to apologise or explain we were turned away very rudely by the maitre d. I accept we were late but there is simply no need to be so rude. You could have politely turned as away and explained why. You could even have rung us beforehand and warned us of the road closures. We walked past later and saw new diners in what were empty tables when we had arrived. I note from other reviews that English people have had poor experiences. Draw your own conclusions.

"Restaurant At'able!" is a highly recommended dining spot in Chinon, offering a perfect blend of quality and value. We would have given a 5 star review but for my wife's inedible Cote de Veau which the restaurant's manageress was extremely reluctant to remove from the bill. After some forthright discussions she eventually removed the item from the bill. This episode somewhat spoilt my 75th birthday celebration and my wife was really upset by the experience. Otherwise all the rest of the meal was excellent and the charming, efficient and friendly Cambodian? waitress really made the evening less of a disappointment. We will certainly return to the restaurant as we feel this was just a small blot on an otherwise excellent restaurant. Mr & Mrs R Kittow

Such a wonderful meal the food was amazing. I don’t understand why there are so many bad reviews. The food quality was great the serving staff did not speak a lot of English but they were so friendly and accommodating. The prices were reasonable and appropriate for the quality. I definitely think the score was way too low for what we received and I think this should definitely be a consideration for anyone in Chinon. I think this is a great example that scores on the internet dont always reflect the quality of food and service that you receive. I can’t wait to go back.
Ben Reed — Google review
A disappointment unfortunately. We took the signature $32 euro menu each plus drinks ($108 euros total). The positives: lovely location, ample paid parking. Some portions of food were enormous (too much so?). The downsides: even in October the place was packed on a Tuesday at noon, and not enough staff to accommodate the influx. We weren’t in a rush but lunch did take nearly 3 hours. Difficult to order from the electronic tablets since they didn’t have any to spare for us and once they did we needed to share (no online menu that we were aware). The food was okay yet didn’t feel prepared on the spot, more like re-warmed. As a chocoholic, very disappointed in the chocolate dessert as it didn’t taste fresh. In balance, maybe it was an off day due to the crush of crowds? But for that steep price, not a place we will revisit.

Highly recommended. Booking essential. Superb French food in this nice little restaurant in the centre of Chinon. It's run by a couple, the wife being the chef. Everything is home made, mostly organic, and full of wonderful flavours. Service is extremely good. Prices are very reasonable, especially for lunch. Wines are expensive by the bottle but you can also order house chosen wine (unnamed in the wine list but very good) by the glass.

Great food and a cute restaurant in Chinon. Had a 2 course lunch including this fish encrusted with peanuts - delicious!

An amazing restaurant in the heart of Chinon, we were mind blowed by the food. We booked there after finding this spot on google map because of the good online rating, when we passed by it and looked at the menu (which i think changes very often because it was nothing like the pictures of the food online) we were a little unsure because my boyfriend and i couldn’t find much on the menu that we would normally eat. We decided to go for it anyway and we couldn’t have made a better choice.. the flavours and ingredients of each dish were put together by the very talented chef that transformed dishes that we thought we would never like, in some of best the dishes we every had!

French gourmet food of very good quality and carefully prepared. The service is impeccable and the hosts are very charming. To recommend absolutely! (The place is small, a reservation may be a good idea).

We had an incredible meal at this little restaurant centrally located in Chinon. The husband-wife team have done a marvellous job bringing a surprising, organic, gastronomic menu to life at an incredibly reasonable price. Now our new favorite in Chinon!

This wonderful little restaurant in Chinon has been one of our favorites for several years. Each dish is beautifully prepared and perfectly served. The foi gras is the best we have experienced anywhere in France.
