Longyearbyen

Longyearbyen is a small coal-mining town on Spitsbergen Island, in Norway's Svalbard archipelago. This Arctic town is known for its views of the Northern Lights. The modern Svalbard Museum chronicles the region’s natural and cultural history. It includes a stuffed polar bear. Live bears can occasionally be seen in the area. The North Pole Expeditions Museum recounts early efforts to reach the pole by air.

Heritage museum
The Svalbard Museum is a cozy facility situated in the town center of Longyearbyen. The museum showcases exhibits about the rich history of Svalbard, including its explorers, hunting, wildlife and coal mining industry. The experience is informative with interactive elements and an interesting display of current research projects and activities.
Must visit when in Svalbard. Museum is open every day. Although it's not big enough you can easily spend 1+ hour depending.
Nasos Lentzas — Google review
Wonderful museum of the wild life and early mining in the area. It is part of the university. The displays are well done with beautiful lighting and decor.
C Neon — Google review
Highly recommended, probably on your first day landing in Longyearbyen. It provides a good introduction on Svalbard and Longyearbyen, the animals, history and the society. There are also some interactive devices, which gave intuitively impressions and reminds people of the climate change and environmental impacts humans brought to this land.

Nice informative exhibition on the history, ecology, geography and social life of Svalbard. Inviting and visual, few but nice interactive elements. Interesting display of current research projects and activities as well. A good selection of books, maps, guides and reference literature in the museum shop!

I strongly recommend that you go and visit this beautiful museum. it is small but rich in knowledge especially for those who like me are passionate about the Arctic environment. You will have the opportunity to learn a lot about the ecosystem of Svalbard, the local flora and fauna. there is a great cocooning area that I really liked, you can sit on the animal skins to read a book and continue your cultural immersion. Take the time to read, cosite and immerse yourself in the places. for my part the visit took me about 2 hours because I really made the effort to read and learn. There is a small souvenir shop at the entrance with very interesting books. thank you again to the nice lady at the reception who explained everything to us and took her time to talk about Svalbard in general.

saw some cool stuff, would recommend. there's not much else to see in the town, but my face during the whole visit was like the pic attached.
Oliver Knight — Google review
Nice little museum located at the town center of Longyearbyen. I only had 45 min to explore the place since it closes at 5pm but I managed to finish around 85%, so 1hr is probably a safe bet. The exhibits told the history of Svalbard, from the exploration of the arctic region to the coal mining industry. Very informative experience but I would say the 200nok entrance fee is rather steep for the size.
Lim Qin Kai — Google review
Very in depth history of Svalbard, showing you every last detail about the relatively short history of these amazing islands. It puts into perspective the huge hunting operations that took place, along with showing you the size of the great animals that live here. Definitely worth a visit!
Ash Lassallette-Desnault — Google review
We went to this museum as a part of our Hurtiguten cruise while we were in Longyearbyen. As a tradition you have to remove your shoes or put a plastic bag before you enter inside. Interior is quite different from other museum, but what they have is the history of Savalbard and it's settlement, research activities, coal mining, and interesting information about wildlife. I had a mix feeling about this place. First you find it interesting to learn about the history, but later you realize the sad part about animals. It's not free unless you are on a certain cruise with Hurtiguten.
Prashant Shukla — Google review
Simple yet informative with arrays of animals in display

Beautifully displayed history of the archipelago with very well kept exhibits at a very reasonable price (we paid 250NOK for the family). It is very easy to follow throughout and has physical objects to back up almost every history talked about. The building is lovely as well, clean too.

Svalbard Church

Lutheran church
Sights & Landmarks
The Svalbard Church, run efficiently by its management, is a strikingly beautiful and immaculate establishment. It offers visitors an experience of serenity and affectionate warmth that is palpable upon entering its doors. In addition to being a place of worship, it serves as a hub of social activity for the community as well. Its coffee and postcards are complimentary, further enhancing its welcoming atmosphere.
This is one of the best things that I have experienced in my trip to Svalbard. This place is very beautiful, very clean, thanks to the management who are managing this place. Here, a person feels light-hearted, peaceful, lovable. I would like to thank the woman Helga (who has recently transferred from Norway to manage this church). I had the best conversation with her. We talked and she explained me how this is not just a church but a community center. A very nice and kind hearted lady. The coffee and post cards are free. Above all the atmosphere inside was very welcoming. Thank you everyone from the bottom of my heart. I will never forget this place and the welcome I received here.
Satvik Satvik — Google review
It is the world's northernmost church in the world, located in Longyearbyen. It's the main meeting place, and a venue for religious marriages. It's open everyday 24/7. We stayed at Radisson Blu Hotel and this church is visible from there. What a beautiful place for worship along with a majestic arctic scenery around. As a local rule or a tradition, you should remove your shoes before you enter the church. It's a very warm and welcoming place. Interior is fascinating with a beautiful painting behind the altar.
Prashant Shukla — Google review
Time out to light a candle Plus someone was playing on piano and this allowed me to take time out to enjoy this space even more

Cute little church on the outskirts of town! Free tea, coffee and cookies 🍪 Its a little bit of a walk but worth it.
Florian Finke — Google review
Nice small church. There was some childrens choir service going on. The entrance is icy and slippery but the church is fairly maintained.

Worthwhile visit and a good place for a break when walking around Longyearbyen.

Typical Norwegian architecture. Inside boots off. People who take care of the church show great hospitality and overall it was a very nice visit. This is the strangest church I've been to (in a good sense).
Яна Торбова — Google review
What a lovely place in the northernmost town on planet Earth! I've been here accidentally a couple of times and appreciated the accessibility, warmness, minimalist style and atmosphere created by it's keepers. You really do meet a slight feeling of being at a religious place, church - Svalbard kirke is rather a meeting spot for locals, public place for the community. Only part of the interior is telling you that you're still in a church and have to behave yourself properly - at the same time, however, you can chill on the corner with having a coffee and reading a book, not being disturbed by the rituals of visiting a place of worship! Highly recommended, appreciate it
Kurhardt Weilvorker — Google review
it being the Northernmost church itself made this visit special. It has a decent sized chapel, it is mostly quiet as there are hardly anyone around. There is also a sitting area and a small gift shop. Shoe rack and washroom facilities are good
Jack D Sparrow — Google review
A simple wooden church. The entrance is free. You have to take off your shoes for the visit, but there are shelves for that. A staircase leads to the parish hall with a cozy fireplace and comfortable seating. A partial wall separates this area from the actual church room. In Protestant style, the church is very sparsely furnished, but has a friendly and warm atmosphere.

Specialty Museums
The North Pole Expedition Museum, located near the Svalbard Museum, showcases original artifacts and historical exhibits from turn-of-the-20th-century Arctic expeditions. It is curated with great care and provides informative stories of the attempts and successes of reaching the North Pole. Though not interactive, it is a fascinating little gem worth at least 2 hours for those interested in arctic exploration history.
Very interesting, well made small museum, but it requires more than an hour to see everything and more time to watch all the footages. Plus, the ticket is valid for 3 days.
nikos k — Google review
Very friendly staff. The exhibition is a bit small, there are very few original items and lots of long videos with little or no explanation. Also, this museum is really for a fan of dates and names. It does not have many descriptions about the conditions and challenges that the explorers encountered. Please keep in mind that they prefer you paying by card. Closing times are wrongly indicated on Google Maps.
Maurits van de Sande — Google review
Fascinating stories of the attempts and successes of reaching the North Pole. I recommend at least 2 hours, but you can spend more or less depending on your historical interest level.

Very specific subject matter and lots of written material so if you are interested you could spend ages here. There are also some long film clips. Hence tickets are valid for 3 days. Another visitor might be satisfied with an hour.
David Burton — Google review
Little gem of a museum. It's right behind the Svalbard Museum, and has a plethora of original pieces from the Arctic expeditions and the media coverage they received at the time. It's very informative and nicely curated with great care. The people setting it up love the Arctic and the topic of arctic exploration and the shows. And the woman at the reception is very friendly. Admittedly, there is a lot of information for kids and is not interactive. But it's certainly worth a visit.
Mikel López de Torre Querejazu — Google review
An excellent small museum focused on North Pole attempts. Lots of detailed stories and behind the scenes looks.
Mike Salter — Google review
Lots of interesting information and really well set out to follow the early expeditions by air over the north pole. Beware you need a lot of time to read the electronic information boards and we eventually gave up as we had to leave.
Zane Llewellyn — Google review
Interesting place for those dreaming about north pole.
Eike Fischer — Google review
Nice museum with lots of information. Also a couple of movies wich take over more than a couple of Hours. So the tickets you buy are valid for 3 days. The route you have to take can be a bit of a maze tho. The presented items are very cool to see!
Bob Oorsprong — Google review
The museum was very interesting. You could get lots of information about crossing the north pole for the first time. There were lots of textes and some videos. The videos were quite long and without audio - but you had subtitles. It was cool to see some original things from the expeditions. A really nice thing: the ticket last for three days - so, you could come back later to enjoy the museum again.

Mines
Gruve 3 is a fascinating tourist attraction in Longyearbyen, offering visitors a glimpse into the history of coal mining in Svalbard. The knowledgeable guide leads visitors on a 90-minute walk deep into the mine, showing them layers of coal and explaining how mining impacted the region. In addition to the mine itself, visitors can see a seed vault for Scandinavian seeds and a world heritage vault for microfilm.
A must visit place. You get to know a lot about the history of Longyearbyen and how the coal mines impacted it. Walking and crawling inside a tunnel (optional) really adds to the experience
Nasos Lentzas — Google review
Our trip here was very informative, with a very knowledgeable guide who knew the answers to every question. To crawl in the very narrow spaces and experience the cramped conditions that the miners worked in was a great addition to the trip. Highly recommended.
Zane Llewellyn — Google review
Very interesting! The history of coal mining ar Svalbard. Walking for 90 minutes deep into the coal mine. Seeing the layers of coal. Also a seed vault (Scandinavian seeds) and a vault for world heritage (micro film). Friendly, funny guide.
Tommy Moum — Google review
I could hardly believe people did that old school mining technique day in-day out for decades. Crawling into 38-cm gaps, making the mountain 'come down' on you...eek.
Lauri Elias — Google review
Very interesting tour, Good insight on the Lifestyle of people in longyearbyen back in the day, the perks and the difficulties of extracting coal, seeing the mine firsthand is really special. The guide Vårin she was super knowledgable. She comes from a family of miners and she is a local with alot of interesting stories to tell, and very good at answering any questions you may have. Totally recommend 100%
Elsa Navarro — Google review
Visited the mine as part of the organised tour and it was one of the best surprises during my stay on Svalbard. To start with, it wasn't just a visit to the mine. We got a proper introduction of the history (which is quite interesting), got some ideas about the miner's life and technology (may sound dull for some, but I promise you will enjoy it). The place has a hint of post-apocalyptic feel as the mining practically stopped in the middle of the day and left as-is, giving a better glimpse into the life in the mine, only the miners are missing. The old seed vault and the Arctic World Archive are further bonuses. If you want, you get the chance to crawl into a section of an actual coal seam. You should only do it if you have no issues crawling into narrow places, but if it's ok for you, it's something you would not want to miss. (Be prepared to get some coal dust and dirt. You will be literally laying on top of coal.) In the section allowed to visitors, the height is ranging between about 70cm and 50cm. Probably the best surprise was our guide, Hild, who is knowledgable, funny and witty. @Hild: Thank you for making our stay so much better! :) Be prepared that this is an arctic mine, and the seed vault is here for a reason. The mine is freezing, walls where a lot of people move around are covered with ice.
Zolt?n P?sfai — Google review
One of the best experiences on Svalbard. Great tour, especially if you’re lucky enough to be guided by Leif Arne - who was very informative and entertaining. Recommended!
Alexander Lien — Google review
We had a guided tour and it was very interesting. The tour was in English. The guide explained everything in a pretty good way, so everyone could understand it. Is was cool to see all the left equipment and get some information about the mine and mining in Svalbard in general. We went approx. 800m in the mine and we had the possibility to grawl in one of the shafts - that was awesome
Sophie — Google review
It was an excellent trip through Svalbard’s #3 mine. Descriptions with visuals prior to going into the mine were thorough, and included info on the others mines as well. The many stories about the miners brought it alive. The actual experience of darkness and silence along with getting to handle some of the miners’ tools brought home the extraordinary demands on the miners. But crawling through the 38cm tunnel (you can opt out of that) brought the work into reality. Outstanding guide.
Audrey Charlton — Google review
Don't miss the mine gruve 3 tour. It's very special experience, you get to understand more about the mine, the mountains in the area, the work that people did. If you are claustrophobic, especially in the dark, maybe it's not the place for you.
סער שייק — Google review
Nice tour, start with a long introduction but when you go inside you understand how they worked, respect for these people who have worked here. The guide knew how to tell it nicely. Don't arrange the picture it's only so low for a moment and you can also do the tour without crawling into it. But we did get a feel for what it was like to work there.
Niels Koomen — Google review
Our guide was super nice, very friendly, explained all there is to know in great
Evan Pacini — Google review
The Gruve 3 it’s an amazing experience. You can touch the true story of miners and feel the old spirit of their work. Recommend as an attractive attraction.
Yonka Stoencheva — Google review
A very interesting sight and definitely one of the things you should do in Longyearbyen. The guide explained a lot. If one wants, one can put on a mining suit and crawl into a "Strossa" (the place where they took out the coal). One has to consider that space is extremely limited inside a "Strossa" with a ceiling height of 60 - 70 cm. Crawling into a Strossa is not recommended for people with claustrophobia.
Pixoon Tube — Google review
Super interesting mine expedition! Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and made it fun. You can even crawl into the tiny tunnels the workers used to spend hours in to get a feeling for the hard work they did. (That part of the visit is not suitable for visitors with Claustrophobia, the rest is fine).

Galleri Svalbard is a wonderful destination to visit in Longyearbyen, especially during unfavorable weather conditions or when venturing outside the town isn't safe due to the presence of polar bears. This art gallery currently showcases an exhibit by Elisabeth Bourne and also hosts workshops for local artists. Moreover, visitors can browse through various works and products created by residents of Longyearbyen.
Amazing place to visit in Longyearbyen if the weather is bad or you don't have opportunity to go out of the town in a safe way (obligation of being armed due to possibility to meet a polar bear). Recently you can admire the exhibition of Elisabeth Bourne. The gallery building also hosts some workshops and offers works and products of artists residing in Longyearbyen.

The restaurant also features a bar where guests can enjoy Svalbard Bryggeris stout. With its gourmet offerings and cozy atmosphere, Huset Restaurant is a must-visit for food enthusiasts exploring the arctic wilderness of Svalbard.
We enjoyed a lovely tasting menu evening here. Kudos to Jan Eric for the service. The food tasted delicious, and we were pleasantly surprised to find fine dining in Svalbard.

Our first dinner in Longyearbyen was at Huset (1 year ago) and it was a wonderful experience. We took a taxi to the restaurant, but it is also a possibility to walk there (still a longer walk). The hosts were quite welcoming and made sure to explain every dish and wine pairing to us. I have to say that the visual plating was impressive, and it made a great pairing with the tasty food. The menu reflected the Svalbard ensemble and nature. Would love to go back!

A really nice restaurant. We ordered the 7 courses taste menu. Everything was great. The service could have been faster though. I whould definitely go there again if I had the chance. The wine cellar is really cool and big. The price range is huge and everybody could fund something that suits them.

Amazing dinner at Huset, great culinary journey in the heart of Svalbard. I can't recommend this place enough. Loved it - Scallop and Monkfish were amazing. They were very accommodating with a vegetarian (who hates mushrooms) and pescatarian set menus!
trID — Google review
We’ve had dinner both at Huset Bistro and Huset Restaurant. The bistro is casual and the food is more traditional homestyle compared to the restaurant where they serve a creative Nordic set menu. Tastewise we enjoyed the restaurant more than the bistro, but none of them had food as delicious as the competitor further up the road, Gruvelageret. We were actually a bit disappointed with the flavours at the bistro. Nevertheless, both places at Huset has great atmosphere and service with welcoming staff. Should we return, it will be for a new tasting menu at Huset Restaurant ;-)

There are 2 ways to dine here: - the restaurant with a tasting menu - coming as a huge group from the cruise ships I went alone for the tasting menu. I took the vegan option and the food was amazing. I don't drink alcohol and was glad that they had a juice menu too, some of them completely incredible. The personnel was lovely in every possible way. A the end of the 3h+ meal, you can visit the historic building. I highly recommend this exclusive dinning experience in this far-remote place!

As a hunter and someone who holds northern meals close to my heart, the complexity, thought and excellence of the entire Huset experience exceeds any restaurant meal of my entire life. Hust Wow wow wow. Possibly the greatest food experience I’ve ever had. Prepare to have your mind challenged. Which is exactly what I enjoy in a great restaurant. Normally I’d go through each dish but on this occasion I think that would be disrespectful. This is such a special occasion I think you should go with an open mind use your imagination to be surprised. The brilliant chef and his team have constructed a 16 course stunning degustation. The thoughts planning and testing must have taken a long time. It’s a journey of culinary brilliance that challenges your taste buds not to mention your mind. I was blown away dish after dish. So difficult to choose a favourite I have about 5. Just to tickle your taste buds I’ll mention one of the 16. An amazing scallop dish that has 3 brilliant surprises. I’d advise to eat it with your eyes closed. You’ll be amazed. I now have new favourite meats. Reindeer & Rock Ptarmigan a grouse like bird. I rate them above all others easily. I will post 1 photo as a teaser. It’s obviously a crustacean but what will you taste. Their menu includes the statement “a moment of exception” no better words could describe it. A minor apology to my brilliant waiter and excellent sommelier. The waiter was professional and great at describing each dish with pride as well. Great conversations about the food and how it not only tasted but differences due each ingredient. My sommelier was outstanding. First in choice of pairings second in her friendly demeanour third in her engaging with fun and a few laughs. Her knowledge of the wines and how they paired with the food was impressive to listen to. Another apology to V the manager. She was wonderful to talk to happy to have a joke. Then she took us on an adventure well a grand tour of a grand old building. Even the wine cellar with 15,000 wines. Her enthusiasm in explaining the long history and current use of the massive building was infectious. Her knowledge amazing she clearly loves the building and I can see why. A big thank you and congratulations to Alberto and his amazing team. An experience I will never forget.

An amazing experience. The food is delicious and the level of creativity behind the dishes is truly impressive. The wine pairing is great, the staff was perfect. Honestly it did not disappoint, 10/10 would do again.
Thibault Fre — Google review
The restaurant is quite far from the city centre for Longyearbyen standards, but it's a nice walk in the right weather. The building seems like an old residential block. But inside it's a nice venue with a pub and a restaurant. The restaurant itself is small. And at least at the time we were there (October) was understaffed. The plates came late despite the fact that it wasn't busy. There was little care in finding out what we wished for (no one offered to show us the wine menu or take any drinks orders). The Arctic menu was good. Small portions, but interesting local ingredients (seal, reindeer, ptarmigan, and different types of herbs and weeds) prepared creatively with good cooking technique. The price was high for the experience, but considering it's a remote island and it's part of Norway, it's reasonable.

As others have said, a really unexpected place, located in the main tourist shop centre. It's opposite the Stationen, a much larger place, and both are worth a look for different reasons, but we chose here and it was very good. Local Svalbard beers on tap (as they are in pretty much every bar in town!), plus some guest cans in the fridge. Great decor of mining and even a mining truck full of coal as a table! The collection of spirits is amazing, it must be said, with huge lists of whisky, rum, akavit and pretty much anything else on offer. It also seemed to be full of locals, which is a really good thing to see. Liked it here, I'd definitely put it to the top of the list of bars to visit here.

Restaurant Kroa (Steakers Svalbard AS) is a pleasant surprise with its amazing local Norwegian recipes. The reindeer medallions were particularly outstanding and left a lasting impression. The restaurant is dedicated to empowering people and businesses to transform food systems through sustainable supply chains. It offers a unique dining experience in Longyearbyen, serving up reindeer burgers and other local specialties.
Very nice restaurant in the small town, we went there twice during our 4 days trip. We sat at the bar for dinner as we didn’t reserve and it was pretty occupied, but the staff were friendly and chatty, and the room on the bar was enough also for dinner. The interior was great and cozy, and immediately made me warm from the freezing weather outside. The steak sauce was great, and steak was tender. Pizza is always good option, it’s thick and I like how it was baked properly so the edge was very crunchy too. Personally think this is the best and easiest accessible option in Longyearbyen.

Good restaurant with very friendly staff. The food was good. The only thing I didn't like was that the whale carpaccio was covered in sauce, so it was almost impossible to get a good taste of the whale. Our other plates where done right!

Best, and maybe only pizza in Longyearbyen . The beef and onion pizza was made with tender steak, not ground beef and tasted great. Big delicious burgers. Lots of interesting photos and history.

Pleasantly surprised by this restaurant with amazing local (Norwegian) recipes. The meat of the day, raindeer medallions, was AMAZING, and I will remember it for months.
Conrad Cardona — Google review
I was told the Kroa is one of the best restaurants around. So maybe they had a bad day: The glasses are heavily used and are not very inviting. My starter was forgotten and the medium ordered steak well done and drenched in Sauce. All of this for a price I would happily pay if the quality would match it. It might have been a glitch, as I belive reading other reviews. But it left me not satisfied.
Stefan Meiners — Google review
I grew up in Chicago on world’s best pizza. After 40+ countries visited, i believe Kroa’s pizza is equal - amazing, different, but on par with Chi town. I truly cant think of a better compliment to write. Service, food, drinks all perfect. Went here three times over 3 or 4 days. I wish i could bring the pizza home. We had pizza #3. Thank you Kroa!! 💕❤️💕

As the restaurant level in Svalbard caters to the top notched tastes anyway, Kroa is no exception! Excellent food, nice Arctic beer selection, vast Whiskey choice. Always nice "Sea/Land of the day" menue variations. Cool pizza selection (Gruve 1 is my newly found favourite (Minced meat with China cabbage and garlic sauce - I know, sounds questionable, but is really tasty). And if everything fails, you can turn to the Fondant au chocolat! 😋

Very nice pub, cool decoration, with great service and pretty decent food. It'd been recommended as an unpretentious place with great local atmosphere and fair prices and it did not disappoint. We tried the reindeer burguer, the regular burguer, and a stew of the day with beef which was very rich and warm and we all really liked. Highly recommended as a local regular on a budget.

Kroa has a pleasant atmosphere, although considering it’s fairly dark most of the time in Feb , turning down the lights seems silly. If people have to use phone flashlights to read the menu, something is wrong. The moose burger tasted good and was surprisingly juicy. The bun however was not strong enough to stand up to the juiciness and fell apart after 2 bites. The menu offered a “Tom Yum with cod loin” , well that was kind of a disappointment. More like a white Thai curry. No lemongrass , no tomato flavour and only 2 very small portions of cod and I think yogurt as the soup base. When I mentioned this to the waiter, he scoffed and said “the chef is from Thailand so he knows how to make Tom Yum”. Hopefully the chef reads this and realizes he can’t get away with mislabeling items on the menu.

Extremely disappointed. We wait for our meal 1h- the nice guy who served us said sorry for it. When the food arrived the beef burger was terrible. Chips was overcooked, cold and impossible to stick fork In. Burger was cold. After ask to do something with the meal (after 1h waiting) they change my chips for hot one but still overcooked and impossible to eat. They didn't change the burger so it was still cold. My partner lamb was ok- hot and taesty. They didn't have a lot of options from the menu- most of drinks was not available and only selected option from the mains. I'm giving 2* instead of 1* because the person who was serving us was very nice and really they sort out the situation and we didn't pay for this terrible burger

Best restaurant on Svalbard. Restaurant Kroa has the best food on the island. The service is fast, friendly and efficient. The ambience is pleasant and it is a comfortable setting for relaxing. Everything on the menu tasted very fresh despite Svalbard’s lack of access to fresh ingredients. I would especially recommend the Kroa burger and the lamb chops. Again, Svalbard was the last place on earth I was expecting to have a tasty burger. Lastly, unlike most restaurants on Svalbard the prices are very fair. I appreciate the honesty of this business on an island where many try to take advantage of tourists whom don’t have many options. Highly recommend.

We had daal and naan bread which tasted nice. We had margaritas pizza for three continuous days as there was no any halal food option here in Longyearbyen Svalbard. It's Lovely place, ambience is nice

Great interiors, pizzas and staff. There is a huge round table that seats like 20 pax with skylight. That would be a very nice and special dining option for a big group. Possible to make reservations.

The menu features delicious dishes, with the cod being particularly fresh and juicy. It is praised as a fantastic restaurant with exceptional flavors.
Fine dining with a fun history.

Absolutely stellar food and service. We enjoyed learning more about the history of this building, and our server Sebastian did a fantastic job narrating the history as well as the components of each dish. The food was also wonderful and the pictures don't really do it justice. Can't recommend this place highly enough, just be sure to book in advance.

A trip to Svalbard is such a unique experience, full of firsts and surprises… Yet it was very easy for me to point to my best time on the island : a dinner at Gruvelageret! The food was sophisticated, creative but without spacrificing any the pure enjoyment of good flavours. The service was some of the kindest I have encountered in Scandinavia - that’s a high bar. Highly recommended.

Enjoyed dinner here in early October and had a lovely time. We had their 5 course menu, all of which were incredible. We started with pulled reindeer meat which was probably the best pulled style meat I've ever had. The fish was good and the steak was heavenly. Between the last two courses, the host stopped the music and gave us a small historical tour through the restaurant. The restaurant is in an old coal mine storage building but it's been updated and is a very cool spot to visit. If you are in town, this place is a must visit.

Very nice restaurant, absolutely recommended! Wonderful food, friendly staff and historical environment. The guy shared the story of the house and gave detailed advice for our trip in Norway. I would recommend it to anyone who visits Svalbard

100% recommend this place. We had the set menu with wine pairing and it was really tasty. The place itself is super comfortable and has very cosy vibes. The staff is very nice too!

Food tasted very well, and we got served plenty of good wine. But there were not enough food. Like not nearly enough, at all! None at our table felt nearly full when we left. We asked for some more food, and got served some extra tartar, but when we left we all could still have gone for a full cheeseburger some place else. The serving was extremely slow. It took them 3 hours to serve us the 4 meals! When we asked for the check +10 min passed by, without any response - all while the waiter had joined some other guests in talking. Super disrespectfull. It had taken so long time that the rest of Longyearbyen had closed. So we couldnt get any supplementary food, and in order to be able to sleep from hunger, we had to settle with some crackers and chocolate in our hotel-room. That is not what you can expect from a restaurant where you pay 2000NOK per person!

I am SO IMPRESSED with how good a restaurant can be in the middle of absolute nowhere! Gruvelageret is truly a hidden gem, and I wish more people would visit Longyearbyen to check out this restaurant! When driving up the long gravel road, you start to think to yourself how on Earth there is a restaurant at the top…and when you get to the top, it literally is a tiny shack on the side of the mountain! The whole concept for Gruvelageret is it was once a small building that miners used when that was the main industry of Svalbard. It started falling apart, and a few years back the owner of this restaurant bought the abandoned building and restored it to its former glory. You feel like you stepped back in time when you enter this restaurant! The best thing is the fact that despite the atmosphere feeling old-timey, the food is NOT! It is highly creative, Michelin-worthy food that is on par with all of the best restaurants I have ever eaten at! The set menu we chose had so many unique combinations of ingredients and spices, local Svalbard food, and it all just worked so well! Entirely worth the price! The drinks were wonderful, the staff was top-notch (so friendly and made you feel right at home), and you even ended off your meal with the staff telling the story of how this restaurant came to be. I wish I could go back tomorrow. This is a saved place that I will never forget. I can’t wait to visit Longyearbyen again one day to eat at this incredible restaurant once again! 🤩

Vinterhagen Restaurant & Peisen Bar is a popular dining spot in Longyearbyen, Norway. It offers a diverse menu with international and European contemporary dishes. The restaurant has received positive reviews from travelers and locals alike for its delicious food and cozy atmosphere. Located in the heart of Longyearbyen, Vinterhagen is known for its warm hospitality and excellent service.
Very unusual restaurant in Svalbard Spitsbergen. First of all the restaurant is in the hotel. The hotel looks a bit scrappy, but it's just because it's an environmental friendly hotel made out of driftwood and such. The restaurant is nothing short of breathtaking when you walk in. While it's -18 degrees celcius outside, you walk into a very beautiful decorated tropical greenhouse with some cactus 🌵, grape bush and other tropical plants. Nos for the food. At this establishment you can eat WHALE, SEAL and REINDEER! It's a must try. Very delicious and you can rest assure that all meat here has been caught with regards for nature. Good food, good service!

I wanted to give this place a go, and it's only a short walk from the Radisson. So we head there on our second night in Longyearbyen. The main reason was that I'd seen their menu online and they offered many local ingredients. And so we ordered the smoked arctic meats (seal, whale, and reindeer), the grilled seal and reindeer steaks, a cod, and a salmon. To everyone's shock, reindeer was by far the preferred option, with seal a close second, cod in third place, and salmon (which was either frozen or seriously overcooked) last. And we're big salmon fans. We also tried the crumble and the cheesecake for dessert. And the cheesecake seemed to be made with Norwegian brown cheese. Which made it interesting to us. The waitresses were lovely but clearly inexperienced. Which didn't bother us one bit as they were super friendly. And the decoration really stood out. Overall one of our best dinners with a price tag to match it!

Restaurant in a greenhouse, love the interior since the first step into the place. The food and service were amazing. I think this is the restaurant of hotel Mary-Ann’s Polarrigg, so it’s connected with the beautiful outdoor setting of the hotel as well. Definitely worth a visit when in Longyearbyen.

Relaxing place, greenhouse restaurant in a harsh landscape. Lovely Service, delicious kitchen and good beer, wine. Sure, prices are not low...but hey, what do you expect? This is the northenmost town in the World!

Definitely a well run restaurant, with outstanding service and great food. The reindeer steak was perfect, as a light medium rare, tender and very flavourful . The seal steak was just as good, cooked perfectly and served with nicely done veggies. Be sure to book a table here, it’s well worth it.

Excellent food and service. Tried the arctic smoked trio which was melt in your mouth delicious. My husband had the reindeer which was cooked to perfection and the mashed potatoes were so creamy. I had the seal steak and the charred bits on the edge were so flavourful. Must try for Longyearbyen!

The best of the best! Food is amazing here! It’s one’s of life time experience to try something special you can’t eat anywhere else in the world. Trying Arctic food here. Delicious reindeer, whale and seal. Just wow. You need to try for your experience. It’s delicious.

Absolutely splendid dinning service and food! Once inside, we took off our shoes and put on the slippers we brought. The dining area is cozy and full of greenery. We had a small appetizer, two entrees, and we shared a dessert. All of the food was delicious.

Great place. Even with few competitors in the most northern city on the planet guys still do their work with a passion and on a high level. All meat which you can find here bought from a local few hunters who has license from Norway to kill limited quantity of animals each year. Seal, reindeer, and whale. Cooked very well. They prepare it in hot smoked way. And have a in way of steaks. Reindeer steak by default cooked like medium rare, so asked if want other options. Garnish is pretty classic, would happy to see here some additional variations of purées next time. Anyway place is gorgeous, so if you would get it with cruise ship, I’d recommend book place in advance.u

Amazing!! Went for a dinner with my fiancee, we were struck by the cozy and yet lively atmosphere, and the dining hall was beautiful. The staff were great and attentive, and explained every dish for us. The food was delicious, probably the best entrecote I had in years, and the seafood was delicious. It's a bit pricier than other restaurants in town from my experience but well, well, well worth the money! I highly recommend you visit!

An exploration through some locally sourced ingredients to experience artic cuisine from what I can only describe as an eclectic conservatory. Great flavours and fantastic view. Returned to try the seal & cheesecake, both were well worth a try.
