Arugambay is one of the finest beaches known for surfing. These photos were taken off season. During off season fishing is done so the coast and the beach is a bit crowded but if you visit there early morning (before 8) you can enjoy . They allow seabathing only till 6pm and there are certain areas which the life guards don’t want you to be at , so be careful!

It was nice and scenic beach and good beach for surfing. There are many restaurants near by beach. Good place to get party vibe and enjoy the weekend. If you traveling from Colombo, you can travel by bus to Pottuvil and reach here or take train to Batticalo and from Batti you can travel by bus. Also you can travel from down south.

Tucked away 4km from Arugam Bay, is a coastal lagoon thriving with a variety of wildlife. The Pottuvil Lagoon is roughly 200 acres surrounded by mangrove forests and has a tiny island in its centre. The popular activity here is the Lagoon Safari which involves a canoe ride along the lagoon. While cruising through the waters you will find serenity from the beauty of the surrounding views and observe many species of animals and birds. The swamp banks are lush with green trees and wild grass. The sounds that will keep you entertained throughout the ride are the chirping of the birds, the rustling of leaves as monkeys pass through or the occasional trumpet of an elephant. If you are lucky enough, you might spot a crocodile resting or a few elephants roaming about. Water buffaloes will be grazing in the water while the long-legged stilts will be hoarded throughout the patches of dense grass flourishing in the water. Your mind will be energized by the purity of the scene and the serenity you will experience throughout the ride.

It's not a true safari but a kind of boat ride through the mangroves. If lucky, we could find wild elephants grazing on the swarms. The ride is peaceful with lot of birds to watch. This is one of the places to enjoy the sunset, the view is amazing. The guide was kind and offered us the biggest coconut I have seen ever.

One of the best experience I ever had. This is a 2 hour safari through Pothuvil lagoon. Starting near the pothuvil point beach this travels in the lagoon to see loads of birds, fishermen, elephants , crocodiles , whiskey point etc etc. Words can not explain it's beauty. If you visits pothuvil never miss this place. Cost is 1000 rps per head yet totally worth it.

Peaceful boat trip through the mangrove lagoon. The ride is on a pontoon strung across two canoes. May need a pillow to sit on. Good views from the platform. Abundance of animals to be seen for the sunset tour (3:50-6:30pm). Saw several elephants and sea eagles as a highlight. Worth doing if in the area. About RS4-5000 from one of the tour operators.

This is one of the best attractions i had in Arugam bay, it is 15 minutes drive to get to to from arugam and it is the most peaceful, romantic and relaxing attraction you can do. I would not call this a Safari although you see elephants and birds but rather a sunset boat ride inside a lagoon. I would recommend coming here for sunset and the max capacity is for 4 people on one boat. Bring a hat as you'll be sitting in the sun.

Muhudu Maha Viharaya

Mentioned on
Buddhist temple
Muhudu Maha Vihara is a Buddhist temple with over 2000 years of history. The temple is found on the sand dunes of Pottuvil and the beautiful white stupa can be seen all the way from Arugam Bay beach. It is believed that the location of the temple is where Princess Devi, from the Kelaniya kingdom, landed after her father was forced to sacrifice her to appease the gods after a tsunami. Princess Devi arrived in the Ruhuna kingdom and married its king, King Kavan Tissa; the princess is better known as Viharamahadevi, mother of the fabled King Dutugamunu. The temple is definitely an interesting place to visit, especially if you’re a history buff. Along with the stupa, there are stone statues of the Buddha that surround the stupa, as well as two statues of either kings or gods. However, many of the ruins and artefacts are buried under the sand, nevertheless, this temple is an important site for Buddhists and you should visit it when you’re in the Arugam Bay region.

Muhudu Maha Viharaya lies in the town of Pottuvil boarding the sea on the east coast of Sri Lanka. Pothuvil is a Muslim-dominated area. The Muslim community in this area are the descendants of 4000 Muslim families who were given refuge by King Senarath in 1626 following their expulsion from the island’s Western coastal belt by the Portuguese led by Captain De Saa.

Muhudu Maha Viharaya is an ancient temple which located in Pothuvil town very much closer to the beach. There are ruins of a old temple beside the new temple. Most of the ruins are covered in sand due to natural phenomenas. This is believed as the place where Princess Vihara Maha Devi landed from her ship to shore. Among ruins there are three statues. One statue is a Buddha statue and others are states of a prince and a princess. Very nice and pleasant place to visit. Temple is easily accessible by the road. The beach close to area is full of fishing community. Never forget to visit here if you happened to visit Pothuvil.

Muhudu Maha Vihara, an ancient royal temple nestled along Sri Lanka's eastern coast, unveils a captivating story that intertwines history and mythology. Dating back to the 2nd century BCE, the temple is steeped in legend, with a tale that revolves around Princess Vihara Maha Devi and her son, Prince Abhaya. According to local folklore, Princess Vihara Maha Devi sought refuge on the eastern shores after being cast adrift at sea during political turmoil. Guided by divine forces, she landed at the site where Muhudu Maha Vihara now stands. It is here that she gave birth to Prince Abhaya, who later ascended to the throne, ruling wisely and compassionately. In gratitude for their safe haven, mother and son established Muhudu Maha Vihara as a sacred place of worship. The temple, dedicated to Lord Buddha, not only boasts architectural splendors but also serves as a testament to the enduring influence of Buddhism in the region. Surrounded by the tranquil beauty of the Indian Ocean, Muhudu Maha Vihara offers a serene ambiance for spiritual contemplation. Its well-preserved ruins and artifacts narrate tales of ancient royalty and cultural evolution, attracting historians and devotees seeking a profound connection with Sri Lanka's rich past. This sacred site stands as a living legacy, inviting visitors to explore its historical depth and experience the spiritual resonance that lingers within its hallowed grounds.

BEST LOBSTER!! You must visit his restaurant. I can honestly say this was the best lobster I have ever eaten. We wanted to eat at MR Fisherman’s restaurant but couldn’t find it, but luckily we bumped into Mr Fisherman coming off the beach and he invited us back for dinner at his boat the next night (as we were out of season and the restaurant was shut). He cooked the best fish dinner I’ve ever had. We sat by his boat eating crab, red snapper and lobster all prepared fresh with some drinks from the local shop. He had caught the fish that day and prepared it amazingly. It was the highlight of my holiday and I couldn’t recommend Mr Fisherman enough AMAZING!!!! Please visit this lovely man’s restaurant or if your lucky eat at his boat with the sea lapping at the shore you won’t regret it!

We went there because of the positive reviews, but we were extremely disappointed. We had prawns, calamari and an other fish called “red snapper” if i remember well. Nothing was fresh expect the prawns. Everything tasted like frozen fish. We asked that they don’t overcook the seafood, we received an uncooked fish that we had to return because impossible to eat. On top of it, it’s overpriced for bad quality and dishonest owner who swears everything is fresh. I don’t recommend.

Can’t get better authentic seaside Sri Lankan cuisine. Doesn’t look much from the exterior but it’s a must try. Ordered the red snapper and crab both cooked in a sweet caramelized onion sauce. I didn’t stay in the hotel but I did turn up for food. Been to my fair share of curry houses and the quality in all aspects of the restaurant is lacking: - food is loaded with sugar and lacks any depth you expect from a curry - naan is glorified tortilla - rice is dry - curry’s are stingy in their portion sizes with only a few morsels of chicken/paneer in the curry - juices are made with low quality fruit and lack the flavour you’d expect from a “fresh” juice In its defense: - the water is delightfully refreshing The service is a little too relaxed but this is a vacation spot and that’s to be expected. Also be careful not to fall down the stairs

The location is nice. This is unfortunately the only positive thing I can say about the experience. The food is extremely overpriced. It lacks taste and spices. This is not close to real Indian food. I had the most tasteless Dhal of my life. The service is very slow. This was the only restaurant in Sri Lanka that gave me stomach problems.

Been here 6 times during the two times I visited Arugam Bay. The food is great, best tandoori we’ve had in Sri Lanka. In the first week I would’ve given it five stars, but in the second week the service took a turn for the worse. Got served the curry and rice came 20 min later, playing music really loud and constantly switching songs, unresponsive staff. Hope they set things straight.

This place had overall a positive review rating. When we arrived we thought the space was nice. We ordered the tikka masala and butter paneer, both of which were stated to come with unlimited rice and naan (we opted for garlic naan) and 4 vegetarian curries/salads (also unlimited). The service was slow and then we were served our meals. There was the main dish on a plate with 1 poppadom, some plain salad, a bland and cold Dahl and some soy bean curry. We asked the staff why there was not the advertised 4 side dishes and they told us it sold out and it was free anyway. I asked the waiter if this meant we’d get discount and he said no. Our ‘naan’ seemed more like a flat pita. We raised we had ordered garlic and so our naan was taken back (half eaten), garlic added on one piece, and returned to us. The actual main dish curries themselves were nice. Note the menu doesn’t offer any other option other than a main dish with the same ‘unlimited rice, naan and 4 veg curries / salads’. We finished eating and were not once offered a top up of our unlimited dishes. The waiters was sitting upstairs and in their tuktuk. We went to pay and when the manager asked how everything was, we told the truth. He just was smiling and didn’t get up. We were offered 15% off which we felt to be insulting. Overall, main dishes were nice but overpriced (1900 each), sides were bland and very disappointing, management was poor. Would avoid.

Really delicious Indian food for a very good price! My girlfriend and I been to Tandoori Hut 3 times in a row the last days haha. The food is really tasty and fresh. You can reorder as much veggies, rice and naan bread as you want - such a banger! The stuff there is also really friendly and they try to make you feel super comfortable. Besides food is coming super quick. They also got no 10% service charge and fair prices. Highly recommend this place and we are definitely coming back!

Best curry on my Sri Lanka trip and so delicious naan bread! We came more often because it was so delicious. And the prices were very reasonable!

Tasty masalas with a beautiful depth. You get unlimited sides to your order which are all very delicious. Services is friendly and they have a nice founding story. Next time I would love to have some more paneer in my masala though

Pretty disappointed especially after reading the good reviews! I was served cold rice which was inedible, and cold side dishes. I ordered a vegetable tikka masala which had a few shreds of grated carrot in. The sauce was good but the meal was more of a soup than a curry. This also cost the same as the meat dishes. My partner came here 5 years ago, loved it and was excited to return - so not sure what’s happened in this time!

Pizza Hub, formerly known as Food Nest, is a premier establishment renowned for its exceptional wood-fired pizzas. The crust of their pizzas is expertly crafted to achieve a delightful combination of crispiness on the outside and softness on the inside. Notably, their utilization of incredibly fresh mozzarella elevates the taste even further. After relocating from their previous location due to an increase in rent, Pizza Hub can now be found at 146 Tri Star Road.
Super friendly staff and high quality thin crust oven baked pizzas. around $6 per pizza. Would highly recommend the vegetarian pizza 🍕

Good pizza, great vibes and nice staff. Tried the vegan options: vegan pizza with vegetables(2200 rps), salad(1200 rps) and garlic bread(without butter, 600 rps). The pizza dough is awesome, thr sauce is allso good but was very little of it on the pizza. They make the vegan cheese from cashew and it is tasty. The size of the pizza is ok, enough for one hungry person, or for two not very hungry. Problem was when we asked for another pizza they told us they ran out of the vegan cheese and it would take some time. We waited patiently but when the second pizza arrived it was with a different kind of cheese, made of tapioca. Which wasn't so good, no so tasty and too much sticky. So if you take the vegan pizza just make sure it is made of cashew. The salad ia ferfect. There's a bar next to the pizzaria where you may bring beers, so perfect combination - good pizza and beer.

Very friendly good quality Italian pizza, they were kind to stay 1hr more open as we arrived late at night and also helped us finding room

Incredible pizza for a good price. The owner learned pizza making from an Italian friend and you can really taste the quality. Also consider ordering the Lime-Mint drink if you visit, it is exquisite.

We had two pizzas and a penne pasta. Enough for 5 grown ups. The pizzas are super reasonable and tasty for the prizes. No service charge as well!! Highly recommended!

I recommend this restaurant for anyone wanting to try pizza. We tried two pizzas marguerita, two cokes and one garlic bread for 3800 rupees (~12€). Quality was really nice, but some parts of the pizza were burn.

Don't eat pizza much when in foreign countries but this stacks up as a huge 5 star pizza after eating local cuisine for weeks. Base was perfect and good toppings and big enough for 2 people. And byo with wine shop next door 👍👍👍

Restaurant
Located right on the shoreline, Leaf & Vine in Arugam Bay is known for its higher prices, with meals costing over 1000+Rs. However, it boasts a stunning location and offers delectable cuisine. The ambiance is delightful, and the bar even serves cute KingCoconut cocktails shaped like mice. The staff at this establishment are exceedingly friendly, caring, and sweet towards guests. Additionally, they accommodate those with gluten-free dietary preferences.
Gorgeous setting. Right by the beach. Looking out over the sea. Bean bags laid out also to relax on. So cozy at night. Lovely staff who came and chatted to us. Gorgeous cocktails and the food was superb. Really nice vibe. Clean. Would be great in the day time too. We wish we had found it sooner!.

Great Food, Charming Vibe & Cute KingCoconut in mouse shape. The staff is very friendly, caring and sweet. Gluten-free food available. Perfect for dinner by the beach with a romantic setting and nice lighting. Small but well chosen menue with specials every day and a very good Arrak cocktail with passion fruit - absolute must try. They also instantly improved the volume of the music and the songs to now match the vibe of the evening. I 100% recommend this place!

We had such great time here ✨ The atmosphere is so warm, cozy and romantic (with live acoustic music!) The food is excellent, you can feel that it was prepared with love and care. And the staff is amazing. So efficient, quick and accommodating. I strongly suggest this place, where you can enjoy a lovely moment with your feet in the sand 🫶

My husband and I visited leaf & vine after reading all the wonderful reviews. We are visiting Sri Lanka for my 40th birthday. Leaf & vine was absolutely fantastic. When the team knew it was my birthday they arranged a special song with the live musician & fireworks. It was really special. The team are super friendly and welcoming and took the time to talk to us & recommend dishes. The live music was excellent, we recommended songs and even got a shout out. Great entertainment with a chilled environment. The food is perfection, we ordered the mango prawn curry and chilli prawns. Beautiful, fresh and so tasty, I would highly recommend this gorgeous location for dinner, drinks & a get together in the stunning arugam bay. You can see & hear the sea waves, watch the sunset and soak in the atmosphere. Thank you leaf & vine for making my birthday extra special.

Very good tuna tartare for a good price! Best dinner in Sri Lanka sofar. Very good service, sweet potatoes & mayonaise were added on request without extra charge. Highly recommend. Good atmosphere, though music a bit too loud for our taste during dinner.
