Geologic Formations
The Lava field Dimmuborgir is a unique and dramatic landscape in Iceland, featuring rare lava rock formations that are not found anywhere else on land. Visitors can explore the area through comfortable paths, marveling at the towering formations and using their imagination to see shapes of birds, elves, trolls, and other creatures. This magnificent site was formed when lava flowed, hardened, and then was forced upwards by more hot lava.
Very exciting treks to the various parts of this place. The church is also an exciting thing to capture as well. Looks absolutely beautiful in the snow/during winter. Definitely go with a lot of warm layers on and with appropriate footwear to prevent snow slippage (if going in winter).
Saira J. Barlas — Google review
I highly recommend you to take the light blue path (labelled as “difficult path”, but it’s not difficult, you just have to mind your step sometimes) - this is the only path that takes you in the nature and on the rock formations, and it’s much more fun than the plain wide walking roads/paths!
Annie A — Google review
Fun site, but it was super crowded on the walking trails and in the cafe when we went. I recommend going early, or if you only have time for the midday, stopping somewhere nearby and hiking through similar terrain without thousands of your closest friends. I did take a side trail from the main area (towards Hverfjall) and enjoyed solitude while not in the main park area. If you're going midday when a cruise ship is in town, I recommend that!
Julie Hobson — Google review
A wonderful place! You will learn about Trolls because they live there and come out from their caves in December. I enjoyed a hike among volcanic rock formations. The paths are well maintained. You can climb up to a cave in the rock and who knows maybe you can find a sleeping Troll 🧌.
Aleksandra Morel — Google review
cool lava formations with a few small caves, definitely worth a visit if you're getting burned out on waterfalls ;) we went at 10pm and there was no one here

Lava Field Dimmuborgir in Iceland is a surreal and enchanting experience. The natural beauty of the landscape is awe-inspiring, with the twisted lava formations creating a unique and mesmerizing atmosphere. Exploring the area feels like stepping into another world. The well-maintained trails make it easy to navigate, and the information provided enhances the understanding of this geological wonder. A must-visit destination for nature lovers and those seeking a truly extraordinary adventure! There's paid for public toilets and a cafe on site which is open during the high season.
CM H — Google review
Easy walk inside a field of lava piles. It feels a bit as a maze, and there are small caves. There are different well delimited paths that can be followed. If you don't have much time, I would recommend to do the shortest and move on.
Alicia Gonz?lez — Google review
Located by the lake Mývatn in the north of Iceland, it is a rough lava field displaying unusual rock formations, jagged peaks, and mysterious lava caves resulting in a dramatic and unique landscape capable of conjuring fairytale images at every step. It is undoubtedly one of the most interesting destinations for families and kids to visit when on a family trip in Iceland.
Einar P?ll Svavarsson — Google review
The history and views are amazing! Loved looking around and seeing the "trolls" in the stones! Keep your eyes out and see what you can find also!!!
Tyler Jamieson — Google review
Did the Church Circle (Kirkjuhringur) from the car park. The trail is marked with red marker poles. Nice enough trail, but all in all I was a bit underwhelmed by Dimmuborgir. After what I’d already seen by this point, it didn’t really impress. If I was pushed for time in the Myvatn area, I’d prioritise the Leirhnjukur hike instead over this one. WC’s on site but they will cost you 200isk. Parking is free. Cafe on site. Dependent on time of year, midge nets might be a wise accessory!
Toxteth O' Grady — Google review
A great place to spend a few hours walking around. The paths are mostly paved so it’s easy to get around. Great views and nice rock formations. There’s also the Yule Lads, which should be interesting during the wintertime.
Robert E — Google review
Dark scary place, trolls live in the black abandoned houses that are actually just natural formations caused by a volcano erupting under glacial ice so that the lava had to push through water and ice thus cooling rapidly into strange rock shapes. Fascinating geological formations.
Vagabond Couple — Google review
very beautiful, almost fairytale like landscape. if you hike from here to hverfjall, you can leave behind the concrete paths and walk a narrow trail through the lava field, very fun experience!
M — Google review
Good place for hiking. There are 5 trails ranging from 600m to 2200m. Came in November and kind of freezing. There is a park and free.
Keen Jack Aw — Google review
Very impressive place - looks like ruins of a city. Has its "church", rulers chair and other interesting lava made objects. If you are there in August - you can also get to see different mushrooms. Only drawback - prepare face cover due to all the small flies that are around, very nasty and annoying. You can choose how much you want to walk (4 distances) and you can also go from there to the big volcano crater (around 2km).
Ivars Silins — Google review
Nice place for a walk. Nothing amazing. Take the blue trail as it is the most interesting one. I didn’t like that some of the paths are paved. Free parking. Restaurant and toilets near the parking lot.

Specialty Museums
Sigurgeir's Bird Museum, situated in a charming lakeside building that combines contemporary design with traditional turf house style, is an exceptional destination for birdwatchers. The museum boasts an impressive assortment of over 180 taxidermic avian species from around the world. It showcases every bird species found in Iceland except one - the grey phalarope. The museum features detailed captions, designer lighting and a cozy cafe that add to its appeal.
It's a neat little place. Kinda niche but definitely cool to see. Lots of info on local birds. There's also a boat with some local history attached to it. Whole thing takes less than an hour. Very nice lady running the place.
Lane Johnson — Google review
Pricey and we'll done . Worth a visit if you love birds. One room with many stuffed birds.
Marv Baker — Google review
Visit this place just for the excuse to drive into a fantastic area with birds all around. The abundance of birds, both in species and numbers, takes away one's breath! The museum is beautifully presented and the exhibits well arranged in a series of displays. The only downside is that the boards identifying the birds are not aligned with the the appropriate bird, so prior knowledge of the species is needed.
Richard Elliott — Google review
Museum consists of looking at all the birds species that can be found in Iceland with some placards about their location and time of year that they are here. You purchase a ticket and then walk into to explore the birds. It seemed popular but not overcrowded right when it opened at noon. There are many birds to watch afterwards if you choose to get a drink and sit on their back patio by the lake. Staff were very friendly.
Jenna Wilson — Google review
Not the worst museum I’ve been to in Iceland, but not the best either. The bird museum is just one room, where there are a few display cases of stuffed birds and bird eggs. The specimens are stuffed well and look good. However, the entry fee is very steep and didn’t really match the amount of content. I believe it was the most expensive museum we visited in the country. After we were done with the bird museum we were directed to another exhibit, which was about boating in Iceland, also one room, and even smaller than the bird exhibit. Didn’t really add anything of value to the experience.
Robert E — Google review
A lovely little museum with over 200 birds on display and 300 bird eggs too. They are beautifully preserved and displayed, with the right amount of information about where they live and when they are in Iceland. The birds all have a connection to Iceland and were collected by Sigurgeir himself.
Alex Philipson — Google review
My husband and I visited in September 2017. It was a fantastic experience that gave us a whole new (let's be honest, completely new) appreciation for birds. We planned to stop just for a few minutes, but ended up staying well over an hour. The displays are beautifully curated, and it's easy to imagine the avians in their habitat. The building is spectacular and tranquil, too. We were greeted by a very friendly woman who helped us feel so welcome and was happy to answer any question with enthusiasm.
Olivia Szabo — Google review
My girlfriend is a bird enthusiasist, so this was a must visit place. The bird collection is awesome, we even got a list of the birds with names in our language (czech), which was really useful. If you love birds, you have to visit this place. If youre like me and just like animals, i would still recommend this place. ... There was even a wild duck sitting in a small pond in front of the museum, that was a nice touch. Oh, and the building itself is beautiful. We were hungry, so got some food and that was ok, nothing special, but it satisfied our hunger.
Adam Zemančík — Google review
Good museum if you love birds. Also the staff were happy to chat and discuss the history of the area, which added a very interesting dimension for me.
Gra Bell — Google review
A fairly comprehensive collection of the birds living at the Myvatn during the warm part of the year. You will see eggs, stuffed birds, nests and more at the museum. I guess this is a private museum, still well worth seeing, since you will probably see birds that are familiar and also some that are quite exotic.

Lake Myvatn is a stunning natural attraction in the northern part of Iceland. It boasts a volcanic lagoon with natural heating, breathtaking views of the Northern Lights and diverse birdlife. Visitors can explore numerous nearby wonders, including Dettifoss waterfall, colourful mountains and boiling mud pools at Namaskardh pass.
Awesome place, and way less overcrowded than the Blue Lagoon.

Beautiful place. Had a wonderful geothermal nature bath at Myvatn nature bath. Camped at a campground near by. Lots of flies at this time of the year.
Margaret T-X — Google review
Beautiful lake, lots of old volcanos and craters, worth a visit! Best spot to look at northern lights, even in snow-covered April!
Kerox — Google review
Mývatn is a beautiful lake with many small islands in the north of Iceland, the fourth largest lake in the country. Due to its serenity, birdlife and volcanism, the lake, including its surrounding area, is one of the most amazing natural attractions
Kierunek Hiszpania przez Islandi? — Google review
In Icelandic, "my" = flies and "vatn" = water. There indeed is a big concentration of little flying insects at the lake. We had picaridin on our skin that seemed to help.
Vagabond Couple — Google review
The lake area has so many natural phenomena around it. From rock formations in the lake, to lace fields, steam vents, to caves, used in the filming of Game of Thrones. There is so much to see here. Just driving around the area feel like you are no longer on earth! I have never been anywhere similar to the lake area!
Mitch Green — Google review
You must visit MÝVATN. Natural bird sanctuary, to admire the indescribable beauty of the lake. It is also mandatory to visit the largest bird exhibition.
Ramun? Juozapavi?ien? — Google review

Amazing day ❤️ the color of Myvatn and the sky melted together provocate the most beautiful reflection mirror double beauty. Definitely needs to be there and see the inmensity of nature and the perfection. Totally madness be there and enjoy these view.
Lorena Vargas Ramos — Google review
Beautiful place, though in the summer it was not comfortable to take a walk there due to the large amount of flies everywhere. We drove around and watched the birds for a while, the views were great.
Dorota — Google review
This place is surrounded by lots of things to see and hundreds of hiking trails. Came for one day but decided to stay a little longer there. At the end of the day spent three nights there at Vogar campsite. Fully enjoyed the camping there and hiking trails. The only disappointment there was tons of little gnats. They were all over the area. Along my 12 days trip around Iceland I had not seen these little gnats elsewhere nearly at the same quantity as at Miva.
Evgeny Petrunin — Google review
Great area to watch birds and hike with your family. The views are stunning. We decided to stay 4 nights on the lakeside to explore the hidden secrets.
Kevin Lancashire — Google review
Thoroughly enjoyed Iceland's Lake Mývatn area with its serenity, birdlife and volcanic beauty. The lake was created by a large basaltic lava eruption 2,300 years ago and is the fourth largest lake in Iceland. It was also a thrill to stay at the Hlíd Huts overlooking a landscape dominated by water, volcanic landforms and Reykjahlíðarkirkja, the north parish at Mývatn. A morning run on the path that has hosted an annual marathon around the lake since 2000, was icing on the cake.

Beautiful, peaceful place. Wildlife around and if you keep quiet and still it may come to investigate you! The area close to Sel Hotel Myvatn is pretty enough to use this as your base.

Skútustaðagígar is a tourist attraction located near Lake Mývatn wetlands, known for its impressive series of pseudocraters formed by lava flow. These craters were created due to gas explosions when hot lava came into contact with the wetlands, resulting in small scoria cones and craters forming. The area is famous for its abundant birdlife and visitors can enjoy watching nesting waterfowl at nearby Stakholstjorn pond.
This place is Unique and beautiful. We came here during summer for midnight sunset and it was like a dream come true.
Iriana Cruz — Google review
Beautiful view in the evening, especially there is only a few people around here. Not so crowded. It’s close to Laxá hotel where I stay. Very close!
Hannah Liu — Google review
This is a good spot for a view over lake Myvatn. The craters were nice but not very spectacular. Still worth a short stop when driving around the lake.
Marten de Jager — Google review
Honestly wasn’t that impressed. It’s just walking up and down over hills that vaguely resemble craters. There are some nice viewpoints at the tops of some of the craters but they weren’t really worth the amount of time we spent walking around them. The main plus for me was that we got pretty close to the sheep that were grazing here before they scurried away.
Robert E — Google review
This area was beautiful early in the morning. But the bugs were atrocious. Make sure that you have a bug net hat sort of thing. You might look retarded, but you will thank me later. Some people looked absolutely miserable swatting away the bugs that were crawling up their nose and all over them. Nonetheless if you can get past all of that it was very beautiful.
John Nelson — Google review
Beautiful formations. Strongly recommend doing the full loop trail. It becomes much more isolated (as most people stopping only make it to the first couple lookouts) and on a clam day the water becomes a mirror for the mountain ranges behind it.
Colt Chapin — Google review
Awesome views of the lake and the vocanic formations. Easy hikes in the area
Nutan — Google review
Can skip if u are rushing for time as those nice photos are taken via drone shot. At ground level you cant really see those nice craters photo. Good for a short stop no need to spend too much time here. Ample parking space but no toilet.
larryboylow — Google review
Very beautiful and interesting place. You can walk between the craters and during summer spot and hear a lot of the migratory birds. The flies are annoying during summer but the view makes it worth.
diego costa — Google review
Visited May 2022. Parking nearby. A large number of pesudocraters, the land is vast. There are well-formed walking paths winding between the pseudocraters that would bring you to the top of it. Ice cream shop nearby.
nn — Google review
Nice small hike, approximately 40 minutes.
Nikos — Google review
It’s cool and worth a stop if passing but not crazy impressive for Iceland. Most of the impressive photos are from drones which give a better perspective than you get in person. I think it’s free to stop so worth it if you can but you won’t be blown away (maybe by the wind).
Seb May — Google review
Really enjoyed the area, it was very beautiful to see, almost surreal. We enjoyed the longer hike option, which was abt. 2,3 km. The route is very clearly visible and went through quite nice scenery. There were many mosquitoes (but they did not sting!), so a facemask or net is definitely recommended. There were so many mosquitoes that you could hear a humming sound in the whole area.
Henning Schoob (Mr._HBS) — Google review
The pseudocraters are an amazing geological site. The short loop took us 28 minutes, including many stops for photos. The longer loop is more for birds and allowed you to walk more along the edge of the lake. Beautiful views.
Alyssa Becker — Google review
Did the short trail around some of the craters not including the path around the lake. About a mile in total. An obvious move here would be to install a tower or some kind of higher viewing platform. As is, you just don’t get the optimal view of the craters & this site.
Toxteth O' Grady — Google review
The pseudocraters were very pretty even in the half cloud cover we had. The midges made touring too unpleasant though and ruined the experience. A head net would be all that is required to make Myvatn a wonderful place.
Graham Tranter — Google review
I wish we had time to hike this lake around. The hike around is pretty long (over 10km), but you can also choose to hike a small circle through the craters (3km). There is also stairs leading on top of the crater. I would recommend bringing hat / mosquito net for your head.

Amazing food and accommodation!!! Everyone was very friendly and helpful. Dinner was delicious. Some Of the best soup and fish I’ve ever had. We had the pleasure of sitting next to the barn window while we ate where we could watch the cows get milked. Our room was very cozy and comfortable we had breakfast the next morning where we saw our cow friends again and gave them a pet goodbye before heading out.

Amazingly delicious! This was one of our "splurge" restaurants for our honeymoon but absolutely worth it. The pan fried Arctic char was flaky and perfectly cooked, with caramelized crust and crispy skin. The slow cooked lamb shank was also a winner, especially with the reduction. Followed up with the house cake, which was basically the most delicious turtle brownie I've ever had. As a Wisconsin native, I loved being able to visit the cows. Highly recommend!
Sarah Oakley — Google review
This was THE BEST meal we’ve had after a week on Iceland. The lamb soup was spectacular and the burgers were some of the best we’ve ever eaten. Service was excellent as well. Highly recommended!

I have been to I’sland twice and this is one of my favorite spots. The food is amazing and all from the farm. Loved the warm milk shots what a treat. Second time stayed in the guesthouse was fantastic. There are a lot of destinations near by and this is a good starting point. Enjoy!

Popped in for dinner on the recommendation of a staff member at Myvatn Nature Baths. Staff extremely friendly and the restaurant was beautiful. Incredible novelty being part of a working dairy building and the incorporation into the design was amazing. The food was exceptional and I highly recommend the special. My wife had the burger which was also sublime. We shared the cake if the day and today it was Apple cake.... It's was so much more than just an apple cake... The softest and lightest of sponges filled with delicious fruit and a delicious warm chocolate center to really tip ut over the edge. Was a truly delicious meal, I was stunning restaurant and wonderful staff. Could not rate this place high enough. We shall certainly return next year when we're on our summer route 1 tour.

One of the best restaurants we ate during our trip to the island. The most delicious hamburger and meat soup we have ever eaten! The place is special and very nicely decorated. We loved it very much. The view from the restaurant is very beautiful

Chance upon this Restaurant when we are staying nearby the area. Interior of the place took on a relaxing vibe and setting feels great. We took recommendation from the staff here and never regret the choice. We ordered the starter, with clear explanation from the staff of the individual starters. Lamb shanks was indeed very good as well over here. Highly recommended place for anyone who want to visit this place!

We stayed here for 3 nights at the beginning of our trip and it was one of our favorite accommodations, and places to eat. The staff were incredibly helpful, helped us to check in early and gave lots of ideas for things to do and see around the area. Being near all the animals was so fun, and to see the baby lambs was so cute! This was by far our favorite breakfast of the trip, i even tried to get a few recipes! We came for dinner once and it was nothing short of amazing. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a place to stay or a place to eat in this area of Iceland - we hope to come back one day!

This area of Iceland, this dining experience was amazing and unforgettable. It was my son's 17th birthday. The waitress sang happy birthday to him. Lovely! Stunning views, the landscape and the cows! The food was wonderful. I was gifted a beautiful sheep pelt from the merchandise area. A treasure forever! I highly recommend.

We had good times in Vogafjos. location, interior, atmosphere, food 5/5. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ But I have to praise one person the most. I worked in service for many years, but I don't remember a more professional person than this man. I think his name was Patrick. probably the youngest member of staff but certainly the most experienced. Very pleasant, polite, friendly. The other waiters seem to be trying to look busy. The way he presented the wine to us was like you can only see on the Internet. very professional. later we saw him taking orders, seating guests, creating good-looking drinks in a short time, or carrying countless not-the-lightest plates. but still with a calm look. it's always nice to see people who are not afraid of work. Keep up the good work👍. Thank you!

We stayed here two nights in early march. Cabins are located across the street from main building where restaurant is located. It is a 1 min drive, or five minute walk. The cabin itself war very spacious, comfortable, clean and well heated. Only downsides are the thin walls and the lack of a refrigerator. I liked that you could enter the cow shed and actually pet the cows. Outstanding. The location of the resort is close to a lot of sights, for us the most amazing one was Hverfjall.
Katie Hedrich — Google review
Super comfy motel style cabins on a quiet farm. Friendly dog and cows, and the restaurant is excellent! Definitely one of the best burgers I’ve ever had. The Skyr dessert is also a must have.
Paul Lewis — Google review
We checked in then pretty much immediately had dinner at the restaurant after a short time petting the cows and calves next door. We wanted to treat ourselves with a nice dinner after hotdogs during the day and were not disappointed. The restaurant offers superb dishes made with local ingredients. It was outstanding. Same for breakfast the following day, with plenty of choice and delicious food. The rooms are on the other side of the road, within walkable distance. Rooms are large, comfortable and well-equipped, however the wooden structure makes them quite noisy.
Beno?t Rosy — Google review
Very satisfying experience! We’ve visited this restaurant because of the positive reviews and it was an amazing experience. First of all, the food is delicious. Even though it’s a little bit overpriced it looks good and is very tasty. During the mid-season period, it was relatively crowded. I would say that most of the REAL attractions had less visitors during the same day 😁 Better make a reservation! I liked that they have a farm on the other side of the display (literally the glass wall). It feels that the food here is local and high quality. You can also pet the cows 👌🏻 Staff is friendly. During the dinner, once we heard the kitchen workers sang a song together which was super funny, waiters started to joke around it. Like the vibe!
Max Gubarev — Google review
Didn't stay in their hotel but ate at their restaurant. Great food - everything we ordered was very tasty. We ordered lamb shank, Arctic char, lamb filet, and a mix of appetizers. Great ambiance too- they took " farm to table" concept to the next level - some tables were facing the barn with cows standing in their stalls. I didn't feel like eating beef that night.🙂
Ellen Swork — Google review
Had a great experience at the farm resort! Delicious and homemade meals, you can really taste the freshness in de dishes. Great location with the opportunity to pet the cows from the farm, which was fun to do. Would really recommend!

Highly recommend the restaurant! They made a spot for us right before kitchen closed - v lovely of them! Had their goulash soup, lamb fillet and lamb shank. Everything was perfect! Will try to come back for breakfast tomorrow before we head out! :)

The experience at the restaurant was amazing! Location is just beautiful with lake view, and view over the barn with cows that you can pet. The food was so good, it was such a pleasure to eat here. Slowly cooked lamb was tender and well paired with sides, and ice cream with geyser bread crumble - just wow!

The restaurant is seriously excellent - best food I had in 10 days travelling around Iceland. If you don't love the prospect of seeing (and slightly smelling) live cows *in* the building you might want to go elsewhere, but other than that, 10/10, would love to go again - highly recommended.

Absolutely loved this. Interior of the building was great, loved that you could go and see the cows. The food it’s self was fantastic. Had the sharing plate for starter and the burger for main which was the best burger we have had. Dessert was their own choc, pecan and caramel cake which was divine. Really worth a visit and feel it is really reasonably priced.

Stopped there for lunch. What a lovely place. Great staff. Amazing table-to-farm food. And you also get to pet the cows.
Nathália Gregores — Google review
Great accommodation in an absolutely beautiful location! I stayed here with my mother for a week, and had a wonderful holiday. The food was amazing; we had a delicious and elaborate breakfast and dinner at Vogafjós every day. There was a great selection of drinks as well, with fresh milk, Icelandic beers and original cocktail recipes. It is located right next to lake Mývatn, and is located near several beautiful places such as Grjótagjá and Dimmuborgir. The clear skies and lack of light polution also make it a great location to spot the northern lights. And on top of all this, the service was wonderful because of the extremely friendly and helpful people working here!
Florian Wortel — Google review
Brilliant place for a delicious hearty “farm to table” lunch or dinner. We make a point of stopping here whenever we are in the area, usually to visit the Myvatn Nature Baths
Meri Williams — Google review
We just went to eat dinner at their restaurant. You have a view of the cows straight from the restaurant. One of the best places in Mývatn. The goulash soup was tasteful. Lamb fillet was a good dish as well. We tried the hot berry desert which was interesting, not too sweet. Great service.
