Broughton House & Garden is a restored Georgian mansion-turned-museum featuring an extensive collection of paintings and artifacts. The Japanese garden, divided into different sections by low hedges and gravel paths, provides a serene oasis with chirping birds and buzzing bees amongst the spring flowers. While admission to the garden is free, visitors are encouraged to make a donation. The museum also includes a studio and the opportunity to meet Izzy the garden cat.
The car park is 5-10 minute walk from the house but it's free and you can park all day. You go downstairs to the garden and it really surprising how big it is. The paths like the rest of the garden is very well looked after and there is lots to look at. The bottom of the garden has nice sitting area with lovely views to the marina. The downstair also has an art gallery with drawings and paintings done by the man that use to owned the house and the old kitchen. The sitting room has more paintings and a trap door that is really long and is his hidden under a rug and is a very pleasant room. The dining room feels a bit more crammed with all the large wooden furniture and the massive table.

Amazing property. So many contrasts as you walk through the rooms. The garden is amazing with a great view at the bottom of it. Quite a few steps in the house and a few in the garden. Also a great village for a walk around. We managed here and the garden at Threave on the same day.
Colin Speirs — Google review
A National Trust owned property. Features the life(s) of the people who once owned it back in the day. Also has a very beautiful garden with lovely views over the river. Recommended.
JLo — Google review
I didn't go into the house so cannot comment on that, however the garden is just simply beautiful. The garden is divided into different sections thanks to low hedges and gravel paths. There are seats to take a little break, perfect for a day like ours where the sun was out. There were birds chirping and the buzz of the bees enjoying the spring flowers. While the garden is free to enter there is a donation box, worth giving something if you can.

Beautiful house and stunning garden filled with the amazing work of artist E A Hornel
Sally Anne — Google review
Well worth a visit. Set out over 3 floors the home of 'Glasgow Boy' Edward Atkinson Hornel. He left the house and contents to the town so everything is the house is original. When we visited there was an artist at work in the studio. I was fascinated by the floor in there there are scratches in the flooring where Hornel cut his canvas. Lots of souvenirs of his visits to Japan and a dedicated area to Robert Burns as Hornel was a collector of his works. I enjoyed my visit immensely and intend to return next year in summer to include the garden as it was closed for winter.
Sandra Pilling — Google review
The house was closed due to changing of an exhibition so we wondered round the lush Japanese gardens to find sleepy cats , kids playing and lovely views over the marina

The gallery had interesting exhibitions, including portraits when we visited. There were plenty of pictures to view Café was good. The menu design was a bit off-putting (down market), but actually, the food was a good standard. My filter coffee was good too.

We visited Kirkcudbright intending to go to the Stewarty Museum, but it was closed & this place seemed like the next best thing. The staff were friendly & really welcoming, & explained everything that we needed to know about the gallery. There were exhibitions on all three floors, we visited them all & ended up in the cafe. This was a fab spot & they were happy to merge two of their menu items for me. A top spot to visit.

Visited the cafe and the ground floor exhibition of artists associated with Kirkcudbright. Nice bright cafe, good coffee and cakes. We may return for lunch later in the week. I really enjoyed the paintings on the ground floor. I knew some artists and others were new to me. I plan to come back to see them again while we are in Kirkcudbright.

It has an interesting permanent exhibition showing paintings from Kirkcudbright's artistic heyday with the painters from the Glasgow school. Has a lot of interesting travelling exhibitions, like the Galloway hoard and the works of Raymond Briggs. There's a lift, toilets, a great little cafe and a wee shop. This is a fabulous pool. The staff are polite and welcoming. The life guards are particularly amiable and professional. They are constantly trying new things. Fun days have been great for kids and there's also plenty of time set aside for older swimmers. As someone who goes regularly, I can't recommend it highly enough.

A fantastic little museum in the middle of the lovely town of Kirkcudbright. Packed with local artifacts from thousands of years ago to fairly recent times. Such a wide range of items to interest everyone and good for family's. As a local myself I learned about items and events I never knew about but would say that this museum would be fun for people from afar. Donations are kindly welcomed and a visit here is well worth that!

The stewartary museum was an interesting free museum. It contains a varied collection of history items from fossils to taxidermy. Myself and my wife enjoyed it. I would give an hour for it. No toilets and only the down stairs section would be wheel chair available.
