Nachi Waterfall

Mentioned on
Scenic spot
Nature & Parks
Nachi Waterfall, located in Japan, is a stunning natural wonder with a height of 133 meters. It is considered the tallest individual waterfall in the country and consists of several streams that flow from Mount Ogumotori. The falls are surrounded by an old-growth forest, adding to their majestic beauty. The waterfall holds great cultural significance as it is revered as the sacred body of Hiro-jinja Shrine. Visitors can witness traditional events held at the falls in July and December each year.
You can see entropy in action here. Water falls and it can only go one way. Theoretically, all atoms in the universe could be organised to make the water go back up the fall, but that doesn't happen. Why? Entropy. Given enough time, the water falling is breaking the rocks down below and turning potential energy into destruction. And it is beautiful!

Wow, go here even if weather isn’t good it’s a great spot. The near by town has food and treats. We adventured up to the 3 story pagoda then walked down a wonderful path to the falls. Be careful walking down if wet it is slippery. The kids reaction to the water fall was worth all the stairs we had to walk back up. They where amazed. There is free parking if you drive further up the road. If you park next to the falls the fee is 500 yen just a couple blocks up there is a 400 yen parking spot.

We parked near the foot of the stairs and began walking up. Didn’t know how long but the stairs are really easy to walk up.. only to find out that there is a parking lot up there.. hahaha.. Managed to find a nice spot with a similar shot compared to the common shot of the temple with the nashi falls on the backdrop.

Highest waterfall in Japan. Nachi Falls is nestled in the mountains next to the Kumano Hongu Taisha shrine and Hayatama Taisha shrine. Many areas for great viewing and pictures.
terrymaco — Google review
Definitely worth a good 2-3 hours to take a look around these falls and the shrine buildings next to it. The falls are fairly big and easily accessible, though there are plenty of steps to get there and also up to the main shrine as well. Some of the parking is a little cheaper away from the main entrance, around 400 yen or so as opposed to 500 yen. I believe there is a free parking area perhaps I missed it on my way in. The falls are ever present wherever you walk around this area so they are great to have in the background for many photos, from the shrine etc.

An absolutely beautiful place and well worth the visit. Nachi Falls is the tallest waterfall in Japan and it’s magnificent to see up close. The walk Down towards the waterfall is also scenic with amazing big beautiful large trees that must’ve been hundreds of years old. If you wanna go closer to the waterfall at mid height you gotta pay 300 at the entrance, and they provide like a small plate for drinking the waterfall water for an additional 200 yen right after the entrance gate. The plates are cute and you can bring them home. Of course you can drink the water without the plates as well. The hike down and up is a bit tough, but I’d say worth all the effort.

Nachi Waterfall is the tallest single-drop waterfall in Japan. Its waters plunge in a stream that is 13 meters wide at the top to a basin 133 meters below. The thundering roar, spray, and sheer scale of the cascade inspired such awe and reverence that it became a place of worship, and was eventually formalized as a Shinto shrine.

Due to covid this place was less crowded when I visit. From Mie ken, Matsusaka station bought ticket that is bound to Nachi san thought I have to transfer to other train turns out I have to get out and transfer to a bus going to Nachi waterfalls (google map wasn’t accurate that day) 😅 Almost lost but found my way. Its quite a long trip but It was hella worth it. Breathtaking view of the tallest waterfall in Japan. To all nature lovers this place is a must visit 😊

Very very natural forest plenty of tree. 133 meters height and 13 meters wide waterfall claimed one of top three Japan’s waterfalls. Hirou Jinja shrine .

Very beautiful water fall & shrines around the area. Requires a bit of walk from the parking lot. There are many parking lots but please make sure to use the one provided by the shrine so that you can park nearby this waterfall and drive up to the shrine for a total of ¥800 if you use a different parking, you would have to pay separately.

Absolutely the jewel of Wakayama Prefecture. The Nachi Falls, which plunge about 133 meters down, is a part of a larger nature area, which includes a steep forest climb, stunning natural scenery, temples, shrines, and of course the falls themselves. The man-made feature is the Seigantoji Temple, which you can visit for free. This is not only a great place to visit, it’s also great exercise. My iPhone told me that I climbed more than 50 flights of stairs that day. 🌲🌳🦌🇯🇵

nice water fall! one could even have a sip of the water for a long life (you had to pay an entry fee (300¥) and buy a bowl to drink the water (200¥) )if I live now forever thats worth it🤣
Geraldine — Google review
There is no wait to enter the premises but if you want to go up close, you have to pay 300 yen at the shrine window. It may take some waiting time if other people are lined up as well as if other people are on the spot in front of the falls where you actually want to take a photo. There’s a water fountain inside and you might want to bring your own bottle if you want to bring home some water. Lots of interesting things to spend your money on in the area. XD
Bernadette Estepa (Gaijin Guide) — Google review
As mentioned by almost every reviewer, it is the highest waterfall in Japan at 133 metres. Which means you can expect tourists pouring in non stop. The higher up the mountain you park, the more you pay. From the carpark, follow the crowd down 👇 a flight of stairs to the falls. Spiritual place for locals, easy walk overall.

From the wellspring within an evergreen primeval forest, Nachi Waterfall is Japan's tallest waterfall, with an uninterrupted drop of 133 meters. There is parking lots nearby. The fee is ¥500. From the car park, the access to the waterfall is by a flight of stairs.

At 133m height situated next to the Unesco Heritage taisha, the view & site are simply stunning! Plenty of corners to take photos, to get to higher level & closer to the waterfall, you have to pay 300yen for each adult. Many dog owners bring their pets along, too.

Stunning view, made me feel calm for a while. I’ve been there twice but early Morning was the best because it wasn’t crowded.

Although very far from the nearest major city, this waterfall is worth the travel. It was a great spiritual experience to come visit this beautiful falls and visit the temple close to it.

The steps down is quite challenging as it is pretty uneven. Waterfall not bad, charges to go to the prayer platform of the waterfall. You can take a sip at the water for longevity in the way up.
Marcus Siew — Google review
Beautiful waterfall that's definitely worth a visit. If you r driving, U can park yr car at Diamon zaka steps and hike to Kumano Nachi Tanisha then to Nachi Falls. You need to be reasonably fit and will take about an hour or more. Then take a bus back to Diamon zaka Alternatively, park at Nachi Falls carpark. Since Nachi Falls is quite close to Kumano Nachi Tanisha, you can also visit Kumano Nachi Taisha. Just walk down the road to the entrance of the shrine n loop back via the hiking route

Kumano-Nachi Taisha is an ancient Shinto shrine located in the Kumano Kodo UNESCO World Heritage Site. It features a majestic waterfall and millennial trees, making it a serene place for meditation. This shrine is one of Japan's recommended destinations due to its picturesque views and remarkable architecture. Additionally, visitors can explore the nearby Nachi Falls, which offer stunning natural beauty.
A fantastic spiritual place to visit on the Kumano Kodo. The view of the waterfall, the ancient temple and millennial trees invites for a quiet meditation. Once of the highlights if you are doing the long hike trail of Kumano Kodo. I was lucky to see a spiritual ritual performance. Highly recommended for a spiritual experience.

Stunning!! Paired with the 133m waterfall, this has to be the most popular taisha among all 3. Pretty steep hill to climb or you can park all the way to the pagoda. Plenty of parking along the way starting from the waterfall. Some parkings near the temple are 100 yen cheaper that the ones near waterfall. Plenty of souvenir shops & restaurants between waterfall to the temples. A few entries require 300yen for each adult, including the 850 year old tree & pagoda.
Angie Lee — Google review
If you visit Japan, this is one of the temples and city you should come for sure. Not just the temples around here but the Nachi waterfall is so beautiful too. Use to be crowded…
Gabriella G. — Google review
After the short climb from Daimon-zaka, I felt a sense of achievement upon my arrival at the Nachi Taisha! The temple was slightly smaller than I expected. I was also hoping the temple to be more “historic” in its appearance than the rather “artificial redness” painted on the pillars. Perhaps they recently had a repaint or something? Anyway, what I found the most interesting at the Taisha is the giant Camphor Tree which was meant to - hopefully - grant your wish if you hold your Gomagi (Purification Homawood) and walk through the tree. This involved going inside the tree in one end and out the other end. It’s impressive to see how well-maintained this tree is and allowing visitors to go inside and to be awed by nature!
Yvonne Tong — Google review
The main shrine looks more modern than I would have expected, the huge camphor tree is superbly interesting due to the fact that your can walk right into it and exit with a short stairs from the side!

This is probably one of my favorite shrines in Japan - picturesque and spiritual. The whole place feels so sacred and mysterious. We visited during winter and the snow made it more magical. It’s a little far so driving up the mountains is the most efficient way of getting there. I highly recommend visiting Kumano-Nachi Taisha.

Another great Shinto shrine in Wakayama. A good though walk up the mountain but worth it in the end.

The shrine is beautiful. The buildings are the glorious shrine red, accessed via a large red torii gate and set around a large courtyard. Part of the experience of visiting the shrine comes from the the walk through the forest to get there from the Daimon gate. Well worth a visit.

This shrine was very calm and beautiful. You can make a wish while passing through in this 850year old tree that is very sacred. Here you can also have a nice view of the pagoda with the background of the Falls this was our highlight coming here in the region. We came up by car , just need to pay 800yen for the entry including parking. But if you are willing to come up by steep stairs you can easily park somewhere else where you only pay 400yen or 500yen.

I think this is number one shrine but access is not favorable so one day should be spend and can explore fully.

The ancient Kumano Kodo trail. Lush greenery, towering cedar trees, and the tranquil sounds of nature. There are many many steps up the shrine along the historical and spiritual Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route. Nachi Falls is one of Japan's highest waterfalls. The sight of the cascading water against the backdrop of the surrounding mountains is breathtaking and provides a serene setting for reflection. For those seeking a day of exploration, connection with nature, and cultural immersion, the Kumano Kodo Walking Trail & Nachi Falls One Day Tour is an enriching experience that captures the essence of Japan's natural beauty and spiritual heritage.

The whole temple complex consist of several old big temples, high on a mountain slope with some really nice views. There isn't much to see apart from that which was kinda a let down since I was expecting a bit more after learning it's a heritage site. Maybe if i visited it during one of the festivals?

Kumano Hayatama Taisha

Kumano Hayatama Taisha is a well-known Shinto shrine situated near the Kumano River and surrounded by woodland. It is one of three shrines that make up the Kumano Sanzan Shrine complex, with bright orange paint distinguishing it from Hongu Shrine. Visitors can enjoy a lovely yet serene atmosphere and traditional shops nearby. While slippery nature stones can make walking difficult during rainy weather, visitors can easily reach the shrine via bus.
One of the three shrines of the Kumano Sanzan Shrine complex (the other two are the Kumano Hongu Taisha and the Kumano Nacho Taisha). The bright orange paint makes the shrine distinct from the Hongu Shrine, yielding a lovely yet serene atmosphere. Close nearby are several shops build in traditional style that are worth a visit. For great coffee and cake visit the "Nikki no Mado" café two streets away.

Worth a stop if you are in the area. There is a free parking lot near by. Lovely food stall around too. I don’t know whether it’s because of some sort of festival or it’s regular there.

A very basic old style Japanese hotel. No porter service. DIY with your luggage check in/out. The only selling point is the view if you book the seaview room. Breakfast is also good. There's also laundry facility.

One of the three Kumano Temples in the area. It's located at the city centre. Like other Shinto temples in the country, you'll find it a peaceful place to hang around.
Shaman Aruna — Google review
The shrine is one of the Three Kumano Sanzan Shrines, along with Kumano Hongu Taisha Grand Shrine and Kumano Nachi Taisha Grand Shrine. Kumano Hayatama Taisha Grand Shrine is said to have been built as a place to worship the gods who had descended to earth on Gotobiki-iwa Rock in Kamikura-Jinja Shrine. The shrine's main deities are Kumano Hayatama no Okami and Kumano Fusumi no Okami, who are husband and wife.

From the shrine being the part of world heritage I expected a bit more but it's in my opinion the least amazing out of there. Apparently there is also a pilgrimige route which has some nice sights unfortunately I didn't have the time to walk it. Parking next to it and the shrine grounds are free.

A beautiful red line of shrine, part of the Kii Sanzan—three of the most sacred shrines in Japan. It has several shrines, and if you are lucky you can take a glimpse of some of the maidens performing a dance inside the shrines. I’m most impressed by the 1000 year old tree in the garden. It’s said that during the pilgrimage people used to take branches from that tree home. How beautiful.

Interesting shrine with a long history where you can find the good luck 3-legged crow which adorns the Japanese national soccer ⚽ team uniform - stunning twisted straw ropes & giant red torii at the entrance, but not much to see once you enter in the shrine buildings. You can see a statue of the famous crow & enjoy the architecture.

Great place. If you take the walk, be prepared for a slightly higher difficulty. The nature stones are really slippery in rain, but you can easily get close via bus. Main problem might be fog. I recommend the pagoda for a great photo of the waterfall

I came to this place after visiting Nachi Falls and Seigantoji Temple earlier, but there was plenty of parking and I was able to visit in a quiet space. There's also a shrine next door...I might have won a drumstick (lol), but since I didn't know about it, I respectfully visited it even though it wasn't something I encountered on my travels.

(Translated by Google) A temple with a quiet atmosphere in Nachikatsuura. This temple seems to have been the site of the Kannon worship known as Fudarakutokai, which was practiced in the Middle Ages. It seems that there was a belief (though it is quite a rough explanation) that if you get to a place called Fudaraku, where Kannon-sama lives, you will be able to pass away. Apparently, this temple was the place where the most people came from this temple. The boats used in the Fudaraku tokai are called watokai-bune, and because they carry small amounts of food and water and set out with the entrance blocked, they have the reputation of being sashingyo (not returning alive). It seems like it was. There is a restored ferry boat on display next to the temple, so if you are interested, we recommend that you come and see it. The seafood restaurant Katsuragi in this breathtaking peninsula attracts tourists with its stunning waterfalls and sacred path, while also serving as a natural refuge for tuna. Recommended by the hotel owner, this establishment offers a diverse set menu featuring delectable preparations of tuna such as rolls, fried dishes, and sashimi. The restaurant's simplicity and pleasant ambiance accommodate both locals and visitors, although it only accepts cash payments. Tour guides suggest that the type of tuna served varies depending on the fishing season.
Fresh tuna in 5 types of cooking at ¥1800. My hubby and i went in late and the owner gave freebies such as salted fried tuna cheek and one slice of freshly prepared tuna sushi after a whole tuna cutting demonstration.

If you’re visiting Kii-Katsuura, recommend trying Katsuragi. There is an English menu available for the set menu and individual items, which is really handy as a tourist. We had the 1800 yen set menu and it was great value and soooo tasty. We even unexpectedly received a delicious grilled tuna head on the house! Fantastic local restaurant!
Natalie Chan — Google review
Good price, tuna is good, staff are really really nice and kind. Very local and not busy at all. Didn't give them 5 stars only because i found everything ok, nothing that impressed me. I had the fired tuna bowl and my partner the bowl with yam on it. Yam was not what we expected, it was slimy and didn't taste much. They also gave us cooked tuna to try as a gift.

The tourists that make it to this area are mainly attracted by the waterfalls and the pilgrim path at the end of this wonderful peninsula, which is also a natural sanctuary for tuna. This restaurant was recommended by the owner of the hotel I stayed for the night. I had a set menu with different ways of enjoying tuna. It was delicious, form tuna rolls, to fried tuna, sashimi and more. The place is simple but nice, the service friendly despite the language barrier. You will find locals and tourists, no card payment.

Great tuna, quality is off the charts and uses local and freshly prepared produce. Great servings of the tuna set menu - nice vibe between the patrons and owners, place feels fantastic and the food tasted amazing. Visited after 5 years and the food tastes as great as back then, being very consistant in quality. Highly recomended.

One of the recommendations by tour guides in Tuna Town. The type of tuna changes to the type of tuna that is being landed for that time of the year.

Fresh sashimi and cozy restaurant. Must visit if you are in the area. It would be much better if its non-smoking

Takehara is a small and cozy restaurant located in the southern part of Osaka, known for serving superb and reasonably priced tuna dishes. The menu offers a variety of tuna options including raw, grilled, and deep-fried, accompanied by sides like clam miso soup, rice, and onion salad in shoyu sauce. The portions are generous with big and fresh tuna sashimi pieces.
The staffs were kind. Their service was very nice. Tuna meat was fresh and so delicious. By the way, chef's wife is Thai. She can speak Thai. I recommend Thai nationals who visited Katsuura to try fresh tuna here.

Overall the food was good but i find fatty tuna was tough. Grilled tuna and asari miso soup especially delicious.
Swee Hin Wong — Google review
The food here was amazing, their specialty being Maguro Teishoku (Maguro/Tuna Set), and it consists of a plate of beautiful raw Maguro, cooked Maguro with onions, miso soup and rice. As the food was amazing we also ordered another serving of some Kaki Fry (Fried Oyster) and although it took sometime it was very well worth the wait. Many of the locals also ordered things not in the menu, which consisted mainly of specific organs of the Maguro Fish we never heard of. Even if there is a downside, it’s that the Chef is already very old so food might come a bit slow if you want cooked goods(The Maguro Set is fast, no worries). But as he’s a Master Chef (as proofed by the many famous people who have visited over the years), maybe his age could even be a good attraction/experience. Depending on your preference. I’m not sure as well if they had English menu or spoke English as I ordered everything in Japanese.

Very nice place and cheap. The best service. Maguro is thick and good taste.

What a place!!! The best sashimi I've tried in Japan. It's a small place, better to come earlier, but you can also wait for your turn on a chair. Very local, quiet, and straightforward. It's good to know a few words in Japanese and have a Google translator ready.

Had one of the most amazing Japanese cuisine. Located far south of Osaka... require a 4-6 hours of train ride. Takehara serves authentic Japanese food and lots of locals come to here to eat and drink. The place is small and cosy. Most important many famous people come here to eat. Lots of signature of famous people. Food taste amazing! Good thing is they know slight English else it would be tough to order! Everything else is great. Highly recommended. One of the few restaurants that open till late. Else there isn’t many restaurant around here.

Live this place. Amazing sushi chef and his wife (and sometimes his dad) serving the most amazing sushi. The chu toro and anago are on par with some of the best sushi I've had in Japan. And it's so incredibly reasonably priced. Make reservations. And you'll probably meet some great locals as well.

Really great restaurant! I'd recommend their tuna set meal, but you can also try Whale if that's an experience you'd like to have. They were really foreigner friendly. The place is small, but worth a wait

Yummy tuna that melts in your mouth. We came here after completing our Kumano Kodo hike. There was a small queue but it moved fast.

Superb Tuna with reasonable price. No English menu but they basically serve Tuna that you can choose between raw, grilled, deep fried - with/without a set of clam miso soup, rice, and onion salad in shoyu sauce. Each Tuna sashimi piece is BIG and very fresh. A set costs 1500y. I also order recommended side dishes, one is deep fried eel skin that comes with mayo shoyu chilli dipping, it's ok but could taste better if very crispy. Another is a soup of grilled Tuna tail. 2 beers sold here, Kirin and Asahi :)

The sushi restaurant Mehari Sushi Nidaime, run by an elderly couple, offers an English menu featuring a variety of local seafood dishes. For vegans, there is the option of ordering the Mehari Sushi, which consists of an onigiri rice ball wrapped in thin Japanese cabbage and filled with plum or vegetables. Additional vegan options include vegetable skewers and tempura. The restaurant provides both counter and low table seating in a small yet charming space with a corner entrance.
Fresh fish! family restaurant operated by lovely old couples. many local citizens will choose this place.

Ask for the English menu. All items are listed. The restaurant is run by an older couple. The menu is local food, which has an emphasis on sea food. If you are vegan, you can order Mehari Sushi, which is actually an onigiri rice ball, wrapped in thin Japanese cabbage, without or with plum, vegetables, etc. filling; vegetables screwers; vegetables tempura; rice; and possibly a few more items. Free tea or order beer, sake, etc. Not too small typical Japanese restaurant, with mainly counter sitting, and low table sitting. Corner entrance, on main road easy to find. Toilett available.

Food is prepared freshly when you ordered. For smaller eaters mini set options are available. Hearty family food and taste good. Please do support the elderly couple when around the vicinity. (◠‿・)—☆

Small place run by a husband and wife who make and serve all the food. And the food is delicious! They offer an English menu with an assortment of salads, tuna dishes (speciality of Kii-Katsuura), grilled items and kushiage. They also have a selection of sake, beer, chuhai, and free-flow tea that you help yourself to. Pro tip: The restaurant specialises in mehari sushi - a traditional zare-sushi that features at least one fermented item. In the Kumano area, this would be made with fermented red mustard leaves. It’s a must-try if you are in the area.

Incredible local Japanese food - great to eat fresh fish and eat their famous Mehari sushi. I went as a solo none Japanese speaking person for lunch and thoroughly enjoyed a delicious set menu lunch!

Bodai, a Japanese-style izakaya restaurant located just a short distance from Kii-Katsuura Station, offers an array of delectable dishes showcasing the flavors of raw tuna. This creative eatery caters to those who prefer their seafood cooked by expertly frying their signature Medium-fat raw tuna cutlet. With every bite, patrons savor a delightful crunch and experience the unique umami taste that sets medium-fat tuna apart.
When you think of Katsuura, you think of tuna, so we had to try the famous tuna cutlet set meal. wow, the tuna cutlet was really fresh, delicious, and unique. The tuna melts in your mouth after the crispy coating and prices are really friendly, too! location was even better as it was just opposite the JR station. Highly recommended to try when you visit the area. Went around 12 noon, and there was no queue. best to go early or make a reservation

Nice quality, fresh food for good prices. I recommend the tuna katsu or the fried whale set menus.

Service is very fast. Queuing during lunch hour at weekend around 15 min. The food is superb, my first time eating tuna katsu, at first I thought it would be so so.., until I ate then the tuna meat melted at my mouth so nice! I order set meal tuna belly cutlet (maguro chutoro katsu) No. 1 menu of this store. When I select this the owner told me "this is No. 1!" and laugh proudly. So kawaii... The place is exactly in front of the JR station Kii-Katsuura. There's an English menu too, the owners seems not so good at English so just select what u want from the picture and let them know. Haha

Very good menu of fresh seafood. One of the tuna dishes deservedly rated highly at a national food competition in Japan. Note that they follow the traditional Japanese practice of serving a small hors d’oeuvre which will be applied to your bill (just a few hundred Yen or so, but I was confused at first). Also note that like many seafood restaurants in the area, they serve whale, so keep that in mind if it causes you discomfort (I avoided it). Staff are very friendly.

This pretty little dining izakya was conveniently located right opposite the Kii-Katsuura station. The finer atmosphere felt a bit surreal when the fish port and nearby stores were just a street away. Their prawn sashimi were amazing, probably the freshest and sweetest ones I’ve ever had in my life 😳😳 They served my favourite urchin don, as well as nicely cooked tuna cutlet served with citrus dip 💯💯
Yvonne Tong — Google review
I told them that I cannot eat raw foods so they fried the tuna for me. The tuna and the side dishes are sumptuous. Solo travelers will be seated in the counter as the number of tables are limited. The owners/servers are very patient with me who cannot speak or understand their language.
mharz — Google review
The food is really delicious and actually deserves 5 stars. BUT: unfortunately the restaurant serves whale. I went in because of the good reviews and only then realized that they have whale on the menu. Really appreciated that they are honest & putting it on the English menu. I wanted to provide this information for anyone who doesn't want to support restaurants that serve whale.

Rude service - we were a group of 7. I asked if there was a table, a polite old woman answered to say no. I asked further questions on (1) whether there will be any table for us at a later time; and (2) how many seats are available now (in case my group would like to split up and eat). The old lady politely answered my first question. As she was answering my second question, a rude younger guy appeared and interrupted and say ‘full’, and closed the sliding door on me immediately right infront of my face. Absolutely unacceptable service (and I was conversing with the old lady in Japanese as much as I can) - another non-foreigner friendly restaurant in Japan. 🙄 No matter how busy they were (and they were not since there were a few empty tables and seats at the counter), that was a terrible way to treat customers - it ruins their day / holiday and I wish some of these non-foreigner friendly Japanese restaurants could be abit more respectful towards foreigners (or at the very least show some common decency).

A chill and relaxing restaurant provides various fish and Japanese local vege cuisines. Not to for get the great Japanese draft beers provided, in which I have picked Yuzu Lager which tasted so great!
