The Romanesque monastery of Abbazia Cluniacense di Santa Maria di Piona, established in 1138 and located on a peninsula, boasts an enchanting cloister adorned with frescoes and offers serene water views. Though the journey to reach this hidden gem may involve navigating twisty-turny cobblestone roads, it is undoubtedly worth the effort. The abbey's peaceful atmosphere is enhanced by the surrounding olive trees and pretty flowers while providing breathtaking vistas of Lake Como.
Very beautiful old monastery with sweeping panoramic views of the lake Como surrounded by mountains. Very tranquil and serene.

We stopped here well taking a day trip around lake Como. This ministry is very large and with many beautiful view points of the lake. This ministry also has many places where you could just sit relax and reflect. It is also pretty quiet here I definitely recommend visiting here well you are in the lake Como area.

Very beautiful place & worth the twisty-turny cobblestone roads to get there. We biked from the Domaso side of the lake which was an adventure (there are nice bike trails, but you do have to take the main road at times which can get a bit hairy). Very peaceful abbey that seems to be a hidden gem. Great views of Lake Como, nice olive trees, and pretty flowers. Must try the chocolate croissants from the cafe - the are the best we've had in Europe so far! Bathrooms are standard squat toilets (there was toilet paper, but I'd advise having tissues just in case :).

Beautiful place where you can bring your family. I recommend the coffee liqueur they sell in the shop.
Linda Mirova — Google review
All in all it’s a very pretty site, nice church/chapel, nice gardens, nice view. But why did god send a mowing machine, but no one to clean the toilets? Well maybe because nobody lives or works here anymore?! But of course they do. However it seems more important to keep the holy liquor store open, than the lavatories clean 😅👍 Logistically buy the liquor on your way out, because there is still some disinfectant left, whereas in the toilets there’s not even soap.

A small monastery with a souvenir shop. Good views but not worth the visit if you aren‘t driving by anyway, half an hour is absolutely enough for a visit - the boat schedule is too infrequent to visit it without a car unless you want to hike back.

Forte Montecchio Nord is an open air museum that was a military stronghold during World War I. Visitors can take guided tours and enjoy views of Lake Como from the gun platform. The bilingual tour guides provide interesting information about the fort's history, including its indirect role in Mussolini's death. This attraction is perfect for history enthusiasts who want to learn more about military forts and their significance during wartime.
Interesting and in-depth tour of a unique WW1 fort. Luca, our guide, gave us a tour in English (not his first language) and was very knowledgeable, passionate and charming. You really get to understand the story of the fort. Recommended.

Superb example of WW1 defensive thinking, augmented today by people in uniform. Astounded to see that the original canon are maintained and can be moved as smoothly as they day they were made. Even the munitions hoists worker.

It's all right. Nothing to write home about. If you have relatives living inside the fortress and you're going to visit the, then by all means take a look at it. The Tour guid(ess) was excellent and fluently made the tour bilingual in IT/EN. Spoiler: in the end Mussolini dies. So one more star for the fort, that was indirectly resposible for it. At least according to the relatives, that live inside the fortress.
Dj Tra — Google review
Remarkably well preserved fort with excellent views from the gun platform, only a short walk from Colico station. It has an interesting history and the wider conflict around a lesser well front (to me at least) of the First World War compared to the more widely known battles of the Western Front was also an eye opener. Our guide was very knowledgeable, impressively conducting the tour in multiple languages whilst still finding time to accommodate each set of guests and answer questions. When we visited you couldn't just roam the site freely, you had to join a tour, so check what times the tours run to avoid disappointment. A wholly unexpected discovery in this region, definitely worth a visit.
Adam Sparrowhawk — Google review
Well worth the visit. I really enjoyed the tour and views. They offered several different languages for the tour, which was a great bonus to for people.

Sadly I didn't have enough time to read anything on the borads to get the information I wanted to, as we needed to press on with the tour guide, but he continued on explaining in 34 sentences in italian and 2 in english. At that continued with every stop. A cool experience but improve in that please. :)

Bus stop
Colico, a strategically located town in northern Lake Como, has a rich history dating back to the Pre-Roman era. Over the years, it served as a crucial passage for connections to nearby regions like Valtellina and Valchiavenna through the Splugen Pass. However, during the 15th century, Colico faced destructions and plundering by passing armies and was infested with malaria due to its unhealthy environment worsened by frequent floods from Adda river.

(Translated by Google) Very little is left of this originally Spanish fort from 1603. This was reportedly destroyed by (yes, there it is again) Napoleon and his army... It was then further demolished to serve as building material for the 8-cannon anti-aircraft gun that was built there around the time of the First World War . The downside to me was that there were very few descriptions of the remains of the fort, only the descriptions of the main buildings were described. But all in all, well worth a visit.

I had an amazing time at El Mercante, despite some language barriers. The waiter provided the menu in English, although neither his Italian nor English skills were exceptional. The appetizers were part of a set menu and consisted of pickled vegetables, fried mozzarella shots, cheesy potatoes, and a delightful charcuterie board. Although it was a substantial amount of food, everything was delicious and I even took the leftovers with me.
I felt like if I was a guest at a locals home, delicious homemade style traditional dishes, good selection of wines and great service

First time visit to the Restaurant 31/08/2023. This is local small restaurant in a small village in Como lake, with Italian atmosphere. The food is carefully cooked in an excellent manner. It tastes Italian. The house wine is good. Staff/waitress very friendly. Even though the staff does not speak fluently English language, you will find it no difficult to communicate and order, as they do anything possible to help you and choose the right food. Great service. Reasonable prices/not expensive. Thumb UP! Highly recommended.

Potatoes, cheese and more potatoes and more cheese… And no papers in the rest room. My individual experience was sad :( I see comments saying waiters do not speak English, but did anyone mention that they actually pretend as if they understand it. Communication issues and/or lack of common sense. Here is the short story: I asked for recommendation. I ended up ordering two starters and a main dish (served min 2) Too much food for a single person. And recommended main dish was nearly the same as the mixture of two starters :)) That waiter should be in love with potatoes and cheese. Note: I tried to clarify portion sizes beforehand but did not work out. +1 star, food was okay.

We had a fantastic experience at El Mercante despite some language barriers. The server provided the menu in English but neither our Italian nor his English was the greatest. The “starters” were part of the prix fix menu and included some pickled vegetables, fried mozzarella “shots”, cheesy potatoes, and a lovely charcuterie board. This was a lot of food, but it was all good and we took the leftovers with us. Next up we had a pasta with chunks of pumpkin, it was fantastic. Finally for the second I we had the veal which was very good. Overall, we had a fantastic experience and look forward to going back again to try the risotto!

During my recent visit to Ristorante Pizzeria Portovino, I had a delightful dining experience. The bread served before the meal was ordinary and slightly dry, but the olive oil provided was exceptional - one of the most outstanding I have ever tasted. The balsamic vinegar for the salad was also noteworthy. Among the three pizzas we tried, mine with buffalo mozzarella stood out as the best choice.
Dinner on friday night without table reservation and the kind staff managed to arrange us a table for 3. We ordered 4 different foods to share and everything tasted excellent! Mussels, pasta, fish and black angus steak. Our 9 year old daughter was fighting for the last pieces of food with us because it was sooo good😁 Thank you so much for making our last day at Como unforgettable.

Hotel review - excellent location, clean, but average quality. Our room was pink, had some older furniture, and the bathroom had odd layout. Also had a small lizard sneak out of the bed when we pulled the sheets back and scurrying away. The hotel is right across from the ferry dock, but also right in town. Ristorante Pizzeria Per...Bacco offers delicious authentic Italian cuisine. Their antipasti platter is a delightful assortment of traditional Italian favorites, perfect for sharing and reasonably priced. The pizza is expertly crafted with flavorful ingredients. The staff is warm and attentive, providing excellent service even during busy times. Despite some issues with staff organization leading to longer wait times for orders, the overall dining experience at this restaurant is enjoyable.
A nice place just some minutes walk from lake. For sure it is the place recommended to go and I will go again. We ate seafood. The food was really delicious, the staff was kind. The price was okay, especially for seafood it can be considered very good. There are places to sit inside and outside, many types of wine. They also have home made wine. The additional fee was 2€ for each person. Just a little comment: try to clean the toilets better please. Even if I was one of the first guests for evening shift in the restaurant, I didn't find it very clean. Not that bad, but anyway it could be better. But of course it is a small comment, maybe for this day it was like this. Thanks for hospitality and kindness

The staff is absolutely welcoming and attentive! We arrived after a long drive in the late evening around 2130h. The restaurant was even this late in December quite busy, which should be a really good sign!

Great pizza and Pesce! Mandatory Coperto (tip) for kid was unusual for me but service compensated the surprise. Excellent!

amazing food and service. The gentlemen from Venezuela who served us was absolutely lovely and truly caring. the place is so cozy for rainy days, it feels like you are in a pirate ship. Highly recommend !

Good food, well served ( good quantity) with a fair cost. We didn’t make a reservation ( August) and we just wait for few minutes ( 3 people). It was a pleasant dinner. Highly recommended.
