Cafayate

Cafayate is a town in Salta province, in northwest Argentina. It lies in the Calchaquí Valleys, an area known for its reddish rock formations. Many vineyards dot the land, and in town the Museo de la Vid y el Vino explains the process of winemaking. Near the town square are the Rodolfo Bravo Regional and Archaeological Museum, with objects from local excavations, and the 19th-century Our Lady of the Rosary cathedral.

Bodega Nanni is a family-owned winery that has been in operation since 1897. It offers tastings of organic wines, as well as guided tours and dining in its courtyard restaurant.
The tasting is presented professionally and wines are lovely. Great place to visit to learn more about organic wine production.

We were expecting to learn more about their organic wine production and only got a tasting of 5 premium wines for $2.200 without much info on the wines themselves except their alcohol content and ageing. The tasting was finished in less than 10minutes and we were told we could enjoy our last sip in the garden. The garden is beautiful though. Without the tour, not sure if it’s worth the visit. Maybe they only bother providing the tour and all the information to bigger groups. Definitely one of the most underwhelming wineries I’ve ever visited.

Place is nice and small, we did not get a tour, but paid 500 pesos and tasted 5 wines, 4 reds and 1 Torrontes. We were in and out in 6 minutes.

Terrible expirience with their retorno restaurant in the courtyard. We passed by sat 2.4. and asked for reservation the day after. Instead of managing it directly we were given a qr code. So the code let to a whatsapp number. I requested reservation and got a „ok“ reply. When we appeared at 7 pm the waiter had to call somebody to recognise us in the reservation list. since the restaurant was empty and looked not set up for dinner already we told the waiter we will return a hour later. We returned at 8 pm the restaurant was still empty but tables had dinner set up. No we were told the restaurant is fully booked with a group and we could only get s outdide table and the only food available for us is empanadas. So what ??? This was not only disappointing from the beginning, i“d say the way the manage reservation and communication skills of front staff is a disaster.

Wonderful certified organic wines. Beautiful garden. Great attention from Abigail. I think is the best bodega in Cafayate. Organic wines are unique.

Great small Bodega. We had a great dinner, after which we did the tour and degustation. Normally, guided tours are each hour, bit this can differ. So be aware of that. Nonetheless, we had a great tour with a great guide! Recommended!

Good food and good wines. A pity we HAVE to do the tour to taste wines. We tasted a few during lunch by purchasing them by the glass.

Went for lunch on a weekday, the service and the food was great!. The staff is very helpful and knowledgeable and the wine really nice. The only downside is that the wine in the restaurant is too expensive, I expected to pay a bit more but not twice as much. Overall is a good experience

The Heladería Miranda Creador del Helado de Vino in Cafayate is a delightful place to visit for wine lovers. Awful place. Definitely won’t come again! Super overpriced ice cream, not tasty at all. To be honest it was horrible. Asked some flavors but they didn’t have most of them. After I paid and try them at home omg… no taste and what did you do with the cream!!!!! I do not recommend this place, try other ice cream places around , probably they’re much better and cheaper.

Specialty Museums
The Museum of the Vine and Wine in Cafayate, Salta, Argentina is a modern and interactive exhibit that delves into the region's winemaking traditions. Situated in the Calchaqui Valleys, this museum offers a dynamic display on the history and characteristics of vineyards in the area, focusing on high altitude wines. Housed in an old wine cellar, it provides a low-cost bilingual tour for visitors to learn about the character and history of these unique wines.
Great start for your time in Cafayate. You'll find a detailed script along the self-guided visit, with an English version on the side. The cost for nationals is around a dollar, while a dollar & a half for foreign visitors. There's a wine bar in the premises, of course. From here, you'll make the most of your wine tasting in the area and I believe you'll also judge your purchases as a connoisseur.
La Protti — Google review
Very detailed and poetic descriptions of winemaking in this part of Argentina. They take a lot of pride in their winemaking process, rightfully so because the wines here are incredible! After the interactive museum (which is very high tech!), please relax and have a drink and snack at the bar. Empanadas are divine and the employees are wonderful, very personable and cheerful, and happy to have people here. We felt very welcome, even if we were strangely ordering food, wine and coffee at 17h 😂 (still on American time with our meals and everywhere else was closed haha). Overall learned so much more about the winemaking process, unique terrain in the north of Argentina. Muchisimas gracias!

We have visited many wine museums around the world, and this one stands out. Very detailed description of everything surrounding the vines and the wines, especially liked the discussion around atmospheric conditions in the region, and the impact on water quality the soil. Highly recommended.

Amazing empanadas made on the spot (dough included) and cooked on a wood oven. Incredible wine serbed by people who know about wine. Great prices.
Alexandros A — Google review
Exceeded my expectations, though they were low for a small-town museum. It actually had good audio-video presentations as well as atmospheric sounds and lighting effects. I learned quite a few things about the region through sheer repetition and hammering through a few peculiar facts about this superb wine valley.
Keven Arsenault — Google review
Very well thought out self-guide museum with information about the local wine and the history of the region. At the end there is an excellent shop featuring a huge selection of wines from several well known area Bodegas, and very reasonably priced too! You don't need to pay the 60 pesos entry fee (cheap!) just to visit the wine store. A few minutes walk from the main square.
Chris Rose — Google review
The first part is ok, not super interesting, but visually interesting. The second part telling the origin of wine in the area is much more interesting. A somewhat sterile exhibition overall, you can do it if you have extra time.

Mercado Artesanal Cafayate is a beautiful regional artisan market where you can find unique and original handmade crafts, unlike the mass-produced items found at other fairs. Visitors can discover well-finished and aesthetically pleasing handicrafts created by hardworking artisans from remote provinces in Argentina.

The winery & hotel Bodega El Esteco offers wine tours in Spanish and English with tastings of different wines. The estate features stunning architecture from the 17th century, and the winery has a tasting room where guests can try various wines by the glass. Prices for wine tours are high, but the estate is beautiful and well worth a visit.
We visited this excellent vinyard doing a trip to Cafayate. This place is one of the oldest and largest wine makers in the area. We did their tour and tasting and enjoyed every moment of it. I'd highly recommend adding this one to your list of considerations if you're planning a trip to Cafayate.

Enjoyed the winery tour with our bilingual guide. Beautiful winery and had a tasting of Torrontes and Cabernet Sauvignon at the end of the tour. Otherwise, tastings were by the glass and quite expensive! A glass of their higher end lines would have cost 180ARS!
Stacey Hill — Google review
Beautiful experience here all around. We arrived early, with 15 minutes before the wine tasting was to begin so we could check out the area and take a couple of photos. When we arrived back and asked when the tour would be starting (10 minutes late) the host said she was leading it and she was almost ready. The tour was super informative and the guide herself was sweet and answered all of the questions and had a love for wine that you could see. The wine tasting itself was great -- loved the experience of sharing with other individuals. We chose the higher altitude wine tasting (the more expensive one) and appreciate our choice. Then we went horseback riding.

If you like wine, DON‘T GO HERE! Let me be straight- the bodega is a beautiful place, and it‘s very well kept. The Corona measures make you feel safe. The staff is friendly. The tour is very thorough and professional, but after doing a couple wine tastings in Mendoza and Cafayate, I expected something more practical... like actual wine tasting! For your understanding: if you want to know about wine making, the plants, the procedure, the climate, the regions, the machinery, the bottles, the logistics, the amounts, the history, the scents, the varieties, the blending, and whatever comes to mind about wine production, brought to you in a very teacher-student-way, this is your place! Just don‘t expect to come anywhere near tasting the precious liquid in the first hour. And don‘t expect to get more than a tiny sip of any of the four featured wines, which is dealed as if it was god‘s personal stash of very limited holy ambrosia. And don‘t be surprised if some members of your tour get little snack plates with olives and crackers and walnuts while the rest of the group get to watch in envy because they didn‘t know there was a premium package available that was never mentioned in the process of buying the tickets on the phone or when paying them at the counter or at any point. Speaking of purchase, my pregnant wife who doesn‘t drink had to pay almost the full price. I leave it to you to compare that to what the other local wineries offer in that case. In the end, my head was spinning, my ears were bleeding and my throat was dry, and my wife and me felt so drained we had to fight the urge to go back to the hotel and call it a day. I am aware that every wine tasting is a sales pitch with an exit through the gift shop, and having payed the price of at the least one good bottle of wine on this one, I feel cheated. I am not exaggerating when I say this experience traumatized me to a point where I don‘t want to risk doing another wine tasting. I am glad I did tho, there is a bunch of lovely big and small places all over town that are worth visiting. That said, every experience is different, and I wish you a great time in Cafayate. And I hope my review will help with that. Cheers and buen viaje!

Great tour given but everyone was confused as to where and when it would start because it was past the starting time and we still hadn’t left. When the tour finished, we went to taste the wines. We got the more expensive wine tasting (extreme altitudes) of 5 wines for $3500 pesos or $12 USD. Then we went horseback riding. This was one of the highlights of the trip for me. We talked to Ricardo who set up the 2 hour tour and met us there at the winery. By the time we finished the wine tour, apparently we were too late to do the full two hour tour (which is strange because they know what time we’ll finish…). So instead we did a loop around the vineyards in about an hour and a half. Our tour guide was super friendly and we loved how he gave us a little freedom to trot with the horses and get to know their processes. We loved being able to see how the baby responded to going out for its first loop with its mom. Because we didn’t do the full tour we only paid $2,500 pesos per person instead of $4,000 each. The lighting was beautiful and made the experience more enjoyable. I wish it could have been during the sunset a bit more. The resort itself looked well done, somewhat modern with traditional influences. We didn’t stay here but the families who were looked to enjoy themselves. nice place to take photos. but poor attention from the staff. I wanted to try two different wines and they don't wash your glasses. They say they didn't have glasses. I had to wash my own glass in the water dispenser. The wines are overpriced and not so palatable.

Awesome! It's huge, and the architecture it's stunning. The wines are so good, and the people you'll meet is very warm. You can also stay with some horses and even ride one of them. Awesome animals! The whole experience is a 10.

Amazing wine tour. Julietta was so knowledgable and friendly. There’s a clear passion for her job and her English is perfect. We did the extreme wines (higher altitude) and they were all delicious. Julietta walked us through the whole tasting as it was our first time doing a wine tasting, and made it an overall 10/10. She even managed to navigate a drunk member of the group very politely and swiftly. Beautiful place. I would recommend staying a little after to explore. Julietta and the man on reception were so helpful with recommendations around Cafayate for after the tour. Couldn’t recommend them more!

We arrived mid-day and asked for a tasting without a reservation (as their website indicated no reservation was needed). The staff were visibly disappointed we didn't want a more expensive tour. We had two portions of pasta and even though they were both homemade it was very underwhelming. There was no salt at all in the pasta, my tomatoe sauce was way to liquid (maybe there was too much pasta water raimaining) and the pasta was clearly overcooked. We stopped by this restaurant in Cafatate between wine tasting. The staff was wonderful and the prices were fair. However, the pizza we ordered was just average. While it helped fill our stomachs, we didn't bother taking any of the leftovers to go. Perhaps some of the other food would be better.

Good location and the tortilla was nice. However, our waiter was unnecessarily aggressive to us regarding us taking a sip of our own water. This is a first for us in 6 months of travelling and whilst I don't agree with the policy, I would have accepted it if the waiter wasn't so rude and arrogant. If you want good service and the freedom to drink your own water then I recommend going to any other restaurant in Cafayate. Having read previous reviews this is a clear theme.

The owner, who is also the waiter, was really rude to us. We asked him if he would bring us our fries (30 minutes after ordered them) and he answered "every dish takes time since we do not re-heat food. If you like it, great; if you don't, we just cancel it". Really disgusting.

We came on a rainy day and they told us we could not order pizza or empanadas because the oven was off, but the rest was fine. We ordered a chicken milanesa and some sorrentinos. After waiting for more than 40 minutes, we asked how much longer would it take, and the answer was that food was ‘being cooked’. When we received the food, the milanesa looked terrible, cooked like you can cook it at home with very little burnt oil. The pasta was cold, and the waiter was aware of that as he said when we brought the dish: “if it’s cold let me know”. So I could wait for another 40 minutes to get a new pasta?? We left without touching the food. This kind of dishes take no more than 20 minutes to be done. And they should not look like they do here, I do not recommend this place. Apparently the owner has also a historial of moody answers
Rocío Fernández — Google review
Asked for plate of pasta and a Milanesa, things that take normaly no more than 15 minutes to make. Waited for 50 minutes. When the food arrived it looked like the milanesa was made on burnt oil and the pasta was cold. Waiter said "let me know if the pasta is cold". Dreadful experience. We left without touching the food.

La Estancia de Cafayate Wine & Golf is a country club situated on a vast property called Estancia de Cafayate. This secluded estate spans 550 hectares and offers breathtaking views of the Andean Mountains. The architect, Jack Zehren, carefully designed the property with meandering vineyards, horse pastures, and an impressive 18-hole golf course. The club embraces the region's rich culture and offers approximately 360 homesites for residents to enjoy.
Amazing stay! Don’t miss it!

(Translated by Google) The view of the place is incredible. We arrived close to closing time but they also took great care of us. We ordered two smoothies and to eat I think it was a profiterol with pastry. Very rich everything. Nice place and unbeatable view. If you are staying at Grace Cafayate, do not miss a visit. For lunch I understand that you have to reserve in advance.

Food is excellent, hence the second star. Service could improve, we had to walk in to get a menu, had to ask twice to order desert, and had to walk in again to get our bill. What I don't understand is that when we were visiting Cafayate (a town of poets and artists), there was a lack of water everywhere (no swimming pool was filled) but this golf course is watering their courses in the burning sun (14:00). From town of poets to town of the elites.

(Translated by Google) Very nice restaurant located in a gated community within a spectacular vineyard overlooking the golf course and the mountains. Very good relation cost quality. The dishes are rich and hearty, and the Estancia Cafayate Malbec wine is very good. The only observation is that there is a differential menu for the owners with a greater variety of dishes.

We were not allowed in to visit the place - we just wanted to stop for lunch and look around. The man on the gate said you can’t visit because this is a country club, not a bodega. Maybe we didn’t look posh enough to visit, because from the reviews here is looks like you can visit for lunch.

(Translated by Google) Wonderful place, beautiful view, high luxury, impeccable restaurant with a lot of variety of dishes and great prices. As the bodega is still new, there are no myths about high-end wines. The Torrontes we had for lunch was well balanced.

(Translated by Google) Excellent place. Ideal for families, a beautiful walk from the entrance to the restaurant. 10 in relation to price quality. Economical prices for the kind of place it is. Family walk through lagoons. Menus without drinks range from $4000 to $6500. $300 fork price per person. In our case for 4 people $25,000 without dessert and with wine. (Original) Excelente lugar. (Translated by Google) The route from the entrance to the restaurant is a fantasy story, you can't believe how beautiful it is, the people are very friendly The place is beautiful, we sat on some somewhat uncomfortable stools and had a pretty delicious coffee, we didn't have the pleasure of eating main dishes but we will clearly return Don't forget to reserve (Original) El recorrido desde la entrada hasta el restaurante es un cuento de fantasía, no se puede creer lo hermoso que es, la gente muy amable El lugar es precioso nos sentamos en unas banquetas un tanto incómodas y tomamos un café bastante rico, no tuvimos en placer de comer platos fuertes pero claramente volveremos No se olviden de reservar
