Catholic church
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
The Santuário de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios is an 18th-century Catholic chapel renowned for its Baroque & Rococo facade and ornate altar. Situated on a hill west of the town's center, it is considered the most famous monument in the area. Despite visiting numerous churches and cathedrals, this one stands out as something special due to its location amidst some of Portugal's most picturesque surroundings.
Beautiful place, over the city of Lamego, a great view all around. The inside of the church is calm, lovely and calls out to silence and prayer. It us a must if you are in the area and make sure to go up all those stairs, but in winter clothes when it's sunny😅😅😅😅
Maria Filomena Pires (Mena) — Google review
Great views of the town from the church. Similar to Bom Jesus in Braga with stairs all the way down. Some very massive ancient trees; one being a chestnut which looks about 400 years old! Well worth a visit.
Lili Rehak — Google review
Easy access with public bus line 200. You can find bus stop just next to train station. If you don't want to go all the way up by stairs there is also nice old escalator for around 1€ but without nice view during short ride. You can also spend some time in big and green park at the top.
Klaudia Przezdziecka — Google review
This is very beautiful and worth a visit. The outside is stunning and you get a beautiful view of the town from the top of the hill. We drove to the top to visit the church instead of scaling the 600+ steps. (The bottom of the staircase was closed due to repairs being made, and it was raining.) We spent about 1/2 hour here on our way to the Douro Valley.
Elizabeth Bernal — Google review
Imposing staircase surrounded by vegetation and landings with interesting sculptures, fountains and tiles. At the top, the sanctuary and a panoramic view of the city. I advise you to start the route on the avenue.
Jennifer Sousa — Google review
Stunning church, first seen lit up on a dark evening, with cascading stairway intermittently decorated with blue white tile images. It literally looked like a stairway to heaven, the brightness set against the midnight blue sky. You can walk or drive to the top. Never seen anything like it before. Well worth visiting.
A Suthers — Google review
Beautiful Church, Beautiful Grounds. And I'm not sure why no one has ever mentioned you don't need to use the stairs as there are hiking paths all the way up - my elderly mother (75) was able to make all the way up with no problems.
Charlotte Chavez — Google review
Just amazing! 🤩 Everything is so big and full of details. Status, mazes and fountains. I didn't get the chance to see inside as it's rarely open but the outside is just so full of things that it might be the best. By car is easy but not shorter (in distance) than walking as there is a long way. The signs are not well though. Nearby there are supportive cafe and they were renovating some building too.
Paulo Lopes — Google review
The climb up is very nice. Great views from tgevpatio.
Miron E.N — Google review
Even if you've had enough of churches and cathedrals - this one is special and worth the visit, not necessarily inside... It is in one of the prettiest areas of Portugal and its surroundings are enchanting, no less. We visited in October so it was misty in the small forest around it (and all over) - the scent of the air was intoxicating, walking there felt like forever and not enough, I lost track of time. And.. we saw a squirrel, which was a nice bonus!
Sagi Karako — Google review
Wonderful experience visiting Santuario de Nossa Senhora! We decided to walk down and back up twice! Pretty challenging but worth it. The view from the top is exceptional!! I’d recommend it! Not sure how pilgrims were able to do the journey on there knees?
John — Google review
The most gorgeous and impressive cathedral, stairs, and grounds. Not to be missed in Lamego. Free parking, which we appreciated.
Starasia Starr — Google review
Really nice church a few minutes drive from Lamego. Sits on top of the hill with a few hundred steps to walk down, geometrically shaped. The church garden has many mature trees allowing great hike and walk around for a picnic. Majority of the statues are located on the top. If you do drive there are a few stops along the way you can take multiple posts and pictures while driving up to the top. They are abundance of free parking‘s next to the church on the top. However if you would like to take a picture of all the stairs there is also a plaza that is long and rectangular shape at the base with free parking as well where you can take a nice picture of the church and stairs completely. The church is worthwhile to see because they even open up the back inner chambers to the cathedral so that you can view more intimate settings of the church
Lynne Lin — Google review
Beautiful tiles, both inside as outside the church. There's a little terrace near the church to drink a café or a cool drink

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
The Castelo de Lamego, also known as the Castle of Lamego, is a 12th-century Moorish castle located in a medieval area just west of the town center. Although it's smaller compared to other castles in Portugal, it has been well restored and offers free entry. The castle features an inner walled keep and a single watchtower that provides wonderful views over the town. Visitors can drive close to its front entrance and explore the surrounding lookout sites.
There are many places to explore along the Douro...This is one of them...Lot´s of history and culture...Every region different in food and traditions...But you would not know anything about that...Because you are still stuck in a Disco in Oporto...Resident Cowboy and supporter of the economy of Portugal since 2016
Dickie Larue — Google review
Access to castle is free, it is a very nice view point to look at the city below (another way to get the good view of city is to visit the Lamego Sanctuary). There is a short 15 mins walk up from city center to the castle. Besides the castle itself be sure to visit cisterns premises, they are nicely restored and add to the experience. You can climb tower stairs, but outside exit to walls was not open at the time of my visit. Views from castle courtyard in all directions are beautiful and unobstructed.
Mike Z — Google review
Superb medieval walled town with castle at its core. Amazing cistern built 13/14th centuries to store water.
Win Scutt — Google review
Simple castle but in a great spot. Great view of the city and the castle is well maintained. It's free entrance. There isn't much to see in the castle though. Nonetheless it's still a great place to visit.
Paulo Lopes — Google review
It's a beautiful and small castle, free entry, with a great view for photo lovers

There is not much to see, but the landscape is wonderful. It worth taking a picture. The staff is fantastic.
Carlos Lopes — Google review
Great castle and it surroundings, worth the time to walk around.
Mathias Fonseca — Google review
Fabulous drystone tower and fort topping the old town. Panoramic 360 views of the town and countryside. Docent on duty to answer any questions. Well worth the short walk up the stone streets to this well-preserved monument!
Lili Rehak — Google review
Amazing place to visit! Heaven on earth, cold water, many pools and little waterfalls, we came on a hot day and could stay there all day! There is also a nice bar with cold and hot drinks, A must stop in my opinion..
Tom Gorbatt — Google review
Not much to see of the Castle itself, but the walls and a tower, which you can go inside of and walk up three flights of stairs to look out of the top window. The surrounding old town is very charming. Worth visiting.
Jan Neves — Google review
2022 May visit. Free / gratuit. Small little castle inside the inner city. A car can drive close to its front entrance. Apparently, there were many lookout sites around so this castle was built small as a last defence. There were a few bars, guest houses and restaurants in the inner city. However, most of the commerce are all located outside at foot hill. Nice view to check out the inner city and the city of lamego.

Museums
The Museu de Lamego, located in the former Bishops' Palace, is a treasure trove of art and historical artifacts. The museum's collection includes precious paintings, sculptures, goldsmithing, tiles, archaeology, furniture and liturgical items from various periods. Originally amassed by the Bishops of Lamego, the collection has expanded over its 80-year history.
Astonishing oil painting "Vista De Spoleto" 1753 attributed to Joseph Vemet upstairs in this former Palace of the Catholic bishop of Lamego. To my untrained eye seemed remarkably vibrant while capturing the action dynamic
Aseire Heard (Francis) — Google review
I was looking forward to seeing the tapestries, but the museum was under renovation, and we were only allowed in eight rooms.

Unique art from old Portugal times and great variety, from Roman artifacts, to Portuguese tiles, Church, religious clothes, articles, etc. The building itself is unique and worth visiting.

Great exposition about Cister community. Lots of ancient pieces: stone, paintings, mats, church clothes and alters. 😍

Lamego Cathedral, also known as Se Catedral de Nossa Senhora da Assuncao, is a grand architectural marvel dating back to the 12th century. The cathedral boasts a unique blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles with a Romanesque bell tower. Inside, visitors can admire colorful frescoes adorning the soaring vaulted ceiling.
The church, established in 1129, is a marvel of Gothic architecture. Admission is free, allowing visitors to explore its numerous internal gates. Notably, a gate on the left side opens to a serene fountain, flanked by exquisitely crafted columns.

Historical Church with beautiful architecture! A must see in Lamego. Visit also the garden of rose’s 🌹
Mart1000 — Google review
Beautiful cathedral in the city center with Gothic tower dating to 12th century (rest was added in 16th and 17th centuries). It is often erroneously mixed up with famous Sanctuary church at the top of Stairs. According to the legend first king of Portugal was declared to be as such in this cathedral. Curious feature of cathedral’s gates is presence of some erotic sculptures that might have been added in Renaissance era. It is in plain eyesight but not easy to spot.
Mike Z — Google review
An amazing & impressive Cathedral to spend an hour or so viewing inside but the external architecture is quite incredible. A visit to be highly recommended.
Jacqueline Willan — Google review
Lamego is a small, accessible town with a lovely atmosphere, a world famous sanctuary and cathedral.
Maria Smith — Google review
The most gorgeous doors of wood and brass. The entire town of Lamego is so beautiful and worth a visit. It was closed for lunch when we got there, but still enjoyed viewing the outside.
Starasia Starr — Google review
Really really cool spot. You can walk up the stairs which is a lot or you can drive to the top, but make sure you take pictures from both sides!

What a church. 😳 Haven't seen anything like this before. Paintings everywhere, golden status and beautiful choir area. This is equivalent to the best cathedrals in the world. Just from a small inland town in northern Portugal. The way to reach here is a wide avenue to rival again from capital cities. Not just Portugal but other big cities in Europe. Even if you're not religious this is worth a visit. Don't miss it.

Chapel
Sights & Landmarks
Capela de São Pedro de Balsemão is a picturesque Visigothic church located in Salzedas, just 3km up the Barosa valley from Ucanha. The church dates back to 1060 and has undergone several modifications over the centuries. Despite language barriers, visitors have found the knowledgeable curator and guide on site to be delightful and informative. While access may be a bit challenging for timid drivers, it's well worth the visit for those interested in history and architecture.
Lovely visigothic church; highly modified by sucesive restorations but the main arch still stands among beautiful impost and roman pillars and aras. Thanks to Maria for her time and detailed explanation.
Alberto Borrego — Google review
I would have given it 5 stars but the very knowledgeable and nice curator(?), person working alone didn't speak any, zero, English. I don't expect everyone to be fluent but I guess I've become accustomed to museum personnel knowing some. We were able to communicate enough for us to get a basic understanding with the minimal amount of Spanish we both knew along with gestures, but could tell I was missing out on a lot of interesting information. I was also disappointed with the available brochure which covers several museums in the area but is only in Portuguese.
RER — Google review
OMG!!! My grandparents came from a village with a church from 1060 but this has half a MILLENNIUM on that. Just NOT to be missed. A bit remote and not for the timid driver but not far outside Lamego center. We took a taxi and had him wait for us. The docent/guide on site was a delight. No English but was amazing at conveying the history anyway.
Garrison Johns — Google review
Tried to find this place a few years back from Regua and gave up. This time we came from Lamego and the access was fine in a modestly sized car. Parking by the chapel, friendly and helpful quide, well worth the visit.
Chris Bennett — Google review
Difficult driving to get there. Don't trust google maps. It may be better to walk the 3km from Lanego.
Joy Ryde — Google review

Restaurant
Adega Matos is a charming restaurant located next to the main historic avenue, offering a cozy and friendly environment reminiscent of family gatherings. The delicious local food, including cabrito and vitela, as well as ham from Lamego, is served at very reasonable prices. Run by an old-school owner, the restaurant provides simple yet tasty meals that are made with love. Visitors praise the welcoming hosts and note the absence of a card machine.
Delicious food, wonderful hosts, and the best environment we have ever seen in Portugal! As a result of the clean space and the friendly staff (whom we also recommended to explore further), we felt so comfortable. This is a restaurant we'd like to return to.

Great place, great food, friendly staff...just perfect for a family. We just loved it!
Alain Leneveu — Google review
Friendly staff but food was not good and definitely not fresh.
Sarah Jamal — Google review
This place is a typical "home style" traditional restaurant and it would make a perfect sense if the food would match the same vibe. We were expecting a generous portion of delicious comfy food and all we got was very average sized meals with the cheapest ingredients ever and mediocre taste. The place got full when we came, it got very loud inside and there was too much confusion about the sitting which isn't the thing other customers should know about in the first place. It got to the point when I had people almost touching my food because of all the confusion. And my fried cod wasn't crunchy, rather soggy, plain taste and very salty in some parts. Served with baked potatoes in vinegar (?) sauce which was super weird to eat to say the least. The only good thing I can think of is low affordable prices, but this isn't that exceptional considering other places in the area.
Mary Protsenko — Google review
A very cozy place, good people and great food, very reasonable prices. This place is way better than its reviews status Totally recommended

Do you remember the feeling of getting your family together at your grandma's house and having a cosy meal? Then you know what it's like to eat at Adega Matos, down to the fact Ms. Angela will make sure you don't leave hungry. Is it the best food in the world? No, but the price is great, located right next to the main historic avenue and the friendly environment is not to be missed

Not sure why this place has a bad review score, it was excellent. Great value for money, and the staff were amazing. Cheap, local and nice tasting food....what more do people want?!

I visited eight cities in Portugal during this trip and this restaurant was the best in food quality. The pork neck and steak are both amazing. The appetizers (starters) are delicious. It is a husband and wife family business. Husband is the talented chef in the kitchen and wife is the manager. They are such kind people trying to serve the best food and they succeed. If you travel to Lamego, do not even consider any other place and eat here. You will be happy 👍

Utterly top notch food, service and great atmosphere when 4 of us visited last week. Found whilst searching online, as only had 1 evening in Lamego, SO glad we did! Restaurant main area was fully booked, but 2 tables near cooking area were available. All had amazing food, cooked to perfection, attention to detail on every dish ... superb flavours and staff excellent. Best meal we had without a doubt, whilst touring Portugal. Chef and owner (same) took time to chat when we were leaving. Highly recommended.

Wow! What an amazing overall experience we had in this restaurant! Food is so delicious and you can feel that every single piece is prepared with so much attention and dedication. We tried several tapas + main course each, loved it all. Selection of wine they have is also great and goes really well with food. Atmosphere is super pleasant and chef is such a nice guy who came out to greet us, that was really nice of him. Overall, their attention to details is truly great :) Next time I travel throughout this region, I’ll make sure to come here again :)

It's not possible to give more than 5 stars unfortunately. They were closing after lunch service and we arrived with a hungry baby. (Translated by Google) A disaster… very bad attention and service. The dishes are not up to the price. We ordered a cod “lascado com Broa” accompanied by rice. The cod was poorly cooked, the quality was very poor, it even smelled bad. The very salty rice. Snotty waiters and long waits for food. Pretentious menu that doesn't quite hit the bar for how fancy the place wants to be. The room itself is decent. My group had salmon (which was quite good) and posta (which was bland and honestly way too raw). The price did not justify the visit at all.

A little different from what you would call “traditional” Portuguese cuisine but the owner Paulo and his wife are an amazing duo that serve the yummiest homemade meals. With the 80s music, personalized service, and great food, it feels like you’re getting a homemade family meal! Super tasty, and really cute atmosphere, we had a great time!

Absolutely amazing place. 5/5 isn’t enough stars to give. Paulo made us feel welcome as soon as we entered and the food definitely matched the service. This place might even be my reason to travel through this part of Portugal again!

What an incredible place! Everything is amazing, and we had a great banquet. It's definitely worth a detour ;) The staff were very welcoming and explained us everything, advising us really well on what to choose. 90% of the ingredients are local (except the padron peppers) what makes the experience even better. Just be aware that the kitchen closes at 2pm for lunch, and the place is a bit small - so book a table in you can!

Casa do Rua is possibly the best hidden gem for lunch in all of the Duoro Valley. I texted the owner months ago for a reservation and again on the day of our visit. He had the table waiting with our name on it. A small family run business, the owner and his wife run this very hip little shop in the central business district of Lamego. Decorated with modern pictures and a caricature of the owners, they play US adult alternative music from the 90’s and 2000’s. The cafe personifies hip with just enough tradition and the owner told us they worked in Spain which explains his small menu of tapas and specialty burgers. Bringing out a couture of a bread only made in the region and what looked like a small Portuguese Jamaican beef patty stuffed with delicious meat filling, the owner explained the menu choices thoroughly. Suggesting a tapa plate that included a gargantuan amount of tapas and our choice of one of eight burgers, he then suggested wine pairings from an extensive list and I tried my first Stout Super Bock beer. My wife enjoyed one of the only Portuguese red wines she’s liked. The tapa plate included three kinds of cheeses, cured meats that included chorizo, a type of prosciutto and cubes of cured black pork (a Portuguese specialty). It also had some bachalu with a fried egg, pumpkin jam, roasted peppers, sweet potato chips, a sauce that he recommended with the black pork, and several types of delicious bread and crostinis. We chose the burger with fig chutney, sun dried tomato, lettuce and manchego cheese and it was the first beef I’ve enjoyed the taste of since being in Portugal for ten days including the big cities. With no room for dessert or coffee, we thanked the owner for his great service and warm personality and he hoped we’d come back again which we will should we ever be in Lamego again. Given the limited seating, we recommend texting ahead for a reservation. Best hidden gem of our trip.

Probably THE best place we ate on our Portugal trip (back in September). Paulo is so clearly passionate about celebrating local food - and he's right to be proud, because it is truly delicious. We just ordered what he recommended: one of their many burgers to choose from, and a tapas platter to share - believe me, he won't steer you wrong. Recommend reservations if you can; we were extremely lucky to nab a walk-in table.

What an experience! My family and I went to this restaurant for lunch today and absolutely loved it. Paul & his wife are the owners and they were so incredibly hospitable and made us feel very welcome as tourists. The food is all farm to plate - Paul bought us an assortment of tapas and we loved it. The sangria is also fantastic! Would highly recommend if you’re in the area.

Traditional restaurant
Casa Filipe, a traditional restaurant in Lamego, is highly recommended due to its excellent Google reviews and delicious food. Customers rave about the mouthwatering roasted goat (cabrito assado) and grilled octopus (polvo grelhado). The service is top-notch, with the owner personally checking on guests multiple times. This cozy eatery offers a delightful dining experience with friendly staff and generous portions. Many patrons vow to return whenever they are in Lamego.
Such a super authentic experience. Great food (the portions are just huge) full of locals and the older lady serving us was just sooo nice! We are looking so much to come back and enjoy more dishes

One of the best meals I’ve ever eaten - and at a tiny price. Do yourself a favour and just go! Oh. And order the roast goat

This family-run restaurant is a real culinary highlight. On our first visit to Lamego two years ago, we were so impressed that we came here twice in a row. And now twice in a row again. The "cabrito assado no forno" (young goat baked in the oven) is highly recommended. Don't worry, it doesn't taste like goat! It is so delicious and comes with potato wedges with an oily orange sauce that finishes it off nicely. A Super Bock beer goes well with this. The service is always friendly and attentive, even if the restaurant is booked up to the last seat. You can sit inside and outside.

We came because they had excellent Google reviews and we were so happy with our lunch. Cabrito assado e polvo grelhado both super delicious. Serviço excelente 😊 the owner also came and check on us a few times. We will definitely come back when in Lamego!

Typical Portugese small restaurant, with a few tables outside. Limited choice, but therefore quality is outstanding. We had the goat stew (cabrito assado no forno) for two persons. Homemade and delicious. Very friendly staff. Prices are relatively very low.

Typical restaurant with great food and friendly service! For the main dish we had “Vitela” and it was absolutely delicious. For desert we had “tarte de Lamego” and really enjoyed it along with the coffee. The portions are huge and the price is relatively low. We’ll definitely come back!

Very reasonable prices. Both sons speak great English and were very courteous. Tried the grilled octopus and the little goat dish both were excellent considering the price. Had a great meal there. Thank you!

Be persistent to get upstairs table (with AC), then enjoy authentic rustic dishes with locals & families (apparently tripe only on Weds!)
