Hakone Shrine

Sacred & Religious Sites
Hakone Shrine is a historic Shinto shrine located in a lush lakeside setting. It features a small museum and is known for its iconic red torii gate that can be spotted from the waters of Lake Ashi. The shrine is believed to bring luck in battle and has been revered by prominent historical figures like shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu and ruler Minamoto no Yoritomo.
Beautiful shrine in the midst of an old-growth forest. We visited on a rainy day and it was perfect for exploring the woods and watching the moss grow. Goushuine is only available as stand-alone cards at the moment. Get there right when it opens for easy (free) parking. The lots filled up quickly in the first half hour.
Josh Diddams — Google review
Hakone shrine gets 4 stars because of location. It's situated nearby a beautiful lake with a Tori Gate on the lake as well! There's paddle/peddle boat rentals on the lake so you can spend a romantic trip out there with a partner or go solo and enjoy the peace and solitude! The shrine itself is quite small, the steps up to the shrine is nice but isn't too special as I've seen plenty of shrines with a similar layout. I think it gets bonus points for the old lion sculpture with the moss growing over it. It also gets bonus points for having some smaller shrines right behind it where for some reason, nobody really goes and a trial that leads up the mountain (where also nobody goes) that leads to a smaller shrine (where also nobody goes).

Everything about this place is beautiful the scenery, the lake, the kind people you meet along the path. A ture sense of harmony. It is next to a quaint little town full of shops, Fishing, and much more There are boat rides you can take.

We went to visit the shrine in the evening after taking the doorway and boat from Togendai to the other side of the lake. There was a long queue of people lining up to take a picture with the shrine, so we just stood on the side and took some quick pictures. It is very beautiful in the evening, but I would guess it’s easier to access in the early morning.
Freja Tousgaard Andersen — Google review
Gorgeous! Lots of stairs and tourists, but worth a visit as scenery is amazing. Famous red torii gate had crazy long line, so if you're looking for the iconic Instagram picture you must be willing to sacrifice your afternoon.
Alexia — Google review
Beautiful shrine and scenery around it. Crowded but still peaceful. Many people line up to pray. Free to enter. Not an easy walk up on staircase for me personally, but saw so many elderly got up there!
Ni N. — Google review
Beautiful shrine near the lake, very easily accessible, by pirate ship, small cruise ship, by bus or car, depends which way you come from. Hotspot for beautiful nature and photography or just chilling with nature.

Pretty long wait, we were there on a Thursday afternoon and waited over an hour. There are often swan pedal boats in the background of the pictures… was cool to see but not sure it was worth the super long wait!
Paul Hewitt — Google review
One of the must-see shrines in the area. There are three parking lots that provide free parking if you arrive by car. There is a cafe near P2. The shrine itself is spread on 3 levels. The most popular one is at sea level where tourists will queue up to get a photo under the waterside torii. Not worth it in my opinion but to each his own.
Nick Jouannem — Google review
Hakone Shrine us situated on the bank of Lake Ashi. We visited it as part of a package tour of Mount Fuji. It's a beautiful Shrine, established in the year 757. There are about 100 steps leading to the Shrine. There are several smaller structures and some sculptures around which are equally beautiful. Then there is a Tori gate located down the steps on the bank of Lake Ashi. It's a must visit place in Japan.
Soudamini Mohapatra — Google review
Visited this place many times as I stop by on the way to see Mt Fuji often. It’s a really nice place, in terms of nature, but can get really crowded. To take a picture with the gate, be prepared for a queue. I guess try to avoid weekends and peak hours if you want to fully enjoy, or not because you are the master of your own life and I believe in your choices
Jumi — Google review
Short walk from the checkpoint along the lake bed, there is the shrine a little bit further up in the forest and the tori gate in the lake. During busy times there might be a queue just to take a picture. Beautiful scenery.
Andy Aumiller — Google review
It's my second time here, and this time not very crowded in a Saturday morning (~09:30). Only need ~10 mins queue before it was our turn to take photos. This place is also good for taking photos even in rainy days (which was our case) as the fog & rain matches with the vibes of this place.
Victor Li — Google review
Really nice place to visit, of course it's very very popular with locals and tourists alike. The Torii by the lake needs to queue up to take pictures. We waited for 40mins with around 12 groups in front of us. Soon the queue started snaking around the compound. Car park is free

Beautiful shrine. The walk pave from the check-point or Motohakone was present with a nice view along the way. Suggest to walk along the Ashi lakeside. Only 15mins one way walking distance.
Akai Chong — Google review
Beautiful shrine near the Hakone lake. The climb into the forest where the temple complex is located is amazing, especially when there’s snow.
Adam Shoshani — Google review
Apart from the lakeside Tori gate that features heavily in many tourist's plans, the shrine on top of the hill has a small but ornate design of dragons featured around it.

Kitayama Park is a serene green space located in Higashi Murayama, Tokyo. It boasts an array of beautiful flora including irises and hydrangeas, making it a perfect spot for relaxation and leisurely walks along the raised paths. The park also has covered benches and toilets for visitors' convenience. In addition to its natural beauty, Kitayama Park hosts an annual iris exhibition that draws in a crowd of photography enthusiasts and families alike.
Visited for the 2023 Higashimurayama Iris Festival. There were apparently many activities throughout the period. It runs everyday and ends at 4pm. There was a free costume rental and the park was pretty big and nice to walk around. There is a raised wooden platform so no need to worry about getting dirty.

Higashimurayama Furusato History Museum

Mentioned on

History Museums
(Translated by Google) When my generation hears "Higashimurayama", it is the birthplace of Ken Shimura, and we automatically think of the drift version of "Higashimurayama Ondo" (lol), but even though it is famous, its industry and history are well known. I came here to find out the actual situation in Higashimurayama City. As a side note, Ken Shimura, who became an indispensable figure in the modern and contemporary history of Higashimurayama City, was posthumously awarded honorary citizen status by the city council, and at the same time a bronze statue was erected in front of Higashimurayama Station (see photo). The way he strikes the pose for the signature gag, ``I~n,'' with a smile on his face, is both funny and impressive. Although it is a historical museum, it is small in scale, but the exhibits were carefully selected, the explanations were easy to understand, and the interior was sophisticated. This is a clear departure from the displays that are simply arranged in glass cases, which is common in local museums. Looking at the exhibits, I felt that Higashimurayama was a ``relay point'' for major historical events. When Nichiren Shonin was exiled to Sado Island, he stayed at Kumegawa-juku in the city, and when Yoshisada Nitta raised an army to overthrow the shogunate, a fierce battle ensued at Kumegawa on his way to Kamakura. . This is because Higashimurayama has been a ``transportation hub'' since ancient times, with major roads passing through it. During the Nara and Heian period, the ancient official road ``Tosando Musashiji'' ran from the Nagano/Tochigi area to ``Fuchu'', the capital of Musashi Province. It was something. As the imperial court declined and the age of the samurai began, the Kamakura Kaido Upper Road was constructed parallel to the Tosando Musashiro Road in preparation for ``Kamakura!''. It is ironic that Nitta Yoshisada's army, which overthrew the Shogunate, advanced through that road (lol). Some people may wonder why they went to the trouble of creating the Kamakura Road in parallel with the official road. The ancient official roads built by the Imperial Court have a very distinctive tendency: they are built in straight lines, ignoring the topography and height differences to reach the destination. The imperial court may have thought that it was ``civilized'' to keep roads in a straight line, as this was the case with the official roads of China, which they used as a model (lol). As a result, construction was difficult as it involved carving away mountains and filling in low-lying wetlands, and maintenance was also extremely time-consuming. For this reason, if the imperial court declines, it will eventually become unable to maintain itself and fall into disrepair. The Kamakura Road was developed as a practical road that was more adaptable to the terrain. By the way, in Higashimurayama City, there is no address called ``Higashimurayama-chome'' in the drift version of Higashimurayama Ondo. Sometimes I get in trouble for being asked at the police box, so just in case (lol).

While the rest of the park remained in its wintry state, as I strolled along, I was amazed to discover a path that led me to a couple of pink trees. (Translated by Google) I can't say enough about this park. It's a good place. I love. I've lived in this area for decades, and have passed by it over and over again for years. I visited the park many times. I went into the park, rested on a bench, and wrote. Rather than that, this square is Harappa. I've visited many times over the years. I ran around. I ran around. He called out loudly. On rare occasions, there was intense action that involved physical contact. ···Enjoyed it. I thought it was a good place. That's the kind of place it is. Ah, cherry blossoms, when they bloom, it's such a beautiful place. I'll probably post photos separately as well. (Updated on 2022/06/30) That's right. Nothing has changed, right? Today I passed along the Tama Lake Bicycle and Pedestrian Path right next to it, and on the way I saw a park on my left. Well, what has changed. Ah, now that I think about it, the Mai Mai Pond has been undergoing renovations for a while now. Was there some construction work going on? that? Is there water here? The shape of this facility is similar to the Nemaizu Well. Play equipment that allows water to flow out is perfect for the summer. It's still under construction, but now that the rainy season is over, the sun is shining brightly in midsummer. (Updated on 2022/09/01) I passed the Tamako bicycle and pedestrian path next to the park, but I didn't notice any noticeable changes. It's a weekday with cloudy skies, and there aren't many people in sight. On the other hand, this might be a good time to visit. What a relaxing experience when there are no people around. ...I wonder if I'll go next time.
