Rana was a fantastic service provider during our 4 day stay in Habarana. His expert knowledge and excellent command of English made our travels so much the better. His prices were fair and readonable, his company most pleasurable and his driving steady and reliable. We travelled with Rana to Anuradhapura and his tour was extensive and most positive. Also, travelled to Sigiriya and took a sensational safari in his Jeep to Minneriya National Park. Finally Rana drove us to Kandy. My husband & I would have happily kept Rana for our two weeks in Sri Lanka except we had friends in Kandy to stay with wwho had cars. I highly recommend Rana for ALL your travel needs and expert information in Sri Lanka.

Rana was recommended to us and we found him to be a very helpful and accommodating person. Nothing was too much trouble and he was good at advising us on the best things to do depending on circumstances e. g. Although we wanted to go to Minneriya national park he suggested because of the flooding there that we went to the Eco Park where the elephants had moved to. We were not disappointed. He acted as our driver guide and we were very pleased with the three days we had with him.
Ian Howarth — Google review
We had a really nice Safari with Rana. Contrary to the majority of safari tour organizations we spoke to in Habarana, Rana was patient, genuinely friendly, and we had to pay a really good price.
Thom Sentner — Google review
Excellent service, excellent advise, would highly recommend. Rana is not only knowledgeable, kind and patient, he is passionate about providing the best customer service. Will definitely be using Rana in our return

(Translated by Google) By chance, and because our bus from Tricomale did not go directly to Polonnaruwa, we had to change at Habarana. At that moment we decided to do the safari to Kaudulla and were lucky that we found this agency. The staff was very friendly and the price they gave us was the same as the one offered by the rest of the drivers on the street with the advantage of having two bottles of cold water and a good vehicle with a magnificent driver who was also very respectful of animals and had a very good eye for detecting birds and lizards among the trees. Highly recommended to hire the Safari directly with this agency. Hurulu Eco Park - Wild Elephant Safari

Mentioned on
Tour operator
Nature & Parks
Hurulu Eco Park, located in Habarana, Sri Lanka, is a popular destination for wildlife enthusiasts. The park is known for its large herds of wild elephants and offers visitors the opportunity to go on a safari in trucks to observe these majestic animals up close. What sets this park apart is that visitors can also get out of the jeep and hike up to a high lookout point for panoramic views of the surrounding area.
Not certain this was the operator we used, but the Eco Park was awesome. We were advised by our driver/the tour company that the elephants had moved here from Minneriya at this time of year and the jeep drive did not disappoint. Spent about 1-2 hours driving around the park stopping to view elephants. Lots of jeeps but enough opportunity to see these majestic animals. There are buffalo too but the elephants are the highlight. We got taken to the top of a rock for a nice viewpoint too. Whether here or somewhere else, a safari is an absolute must when visiting Sri Lanka.
Rishi Bhabutta — Google review
We loved the entire safari experience. I got the opportunity to see Elephant herds. We spent around 2 hours in the eco-park and witnessed Peacocks, Owls and Elephant.
Fathima Nafla Mohamed Nazar — Google review
We went to Hurulu eco park for the safari. We managed to see over 30 elephants. We had a great time. Our criticism is the way the safari system is run. The jeeps should not interfere with the daily lives of these gorgeous animals. Instead there are way too many jeeps. When one driver spots elephants, all of the jeeps chase after the elephants, startling them sometimes. While we are glad that we managed to catch these magnificent gentle giants, the safari industry must be regulated and revamped to make it more sustainable.
Nalaka Warnakula — Google review
Very beautiful park. We saw a lot of elephants, birds and reptiles.. We`ve seen some elephants very close to the jeep. One of the best eco park to watch elephants and enjoy the green nature🐘☘️

One of the best parks to see Elephants. If you are planning a trip to Dambulla, Sigiriya or Habarana, this is one of the best places where you can have an amazing wildlife adventure. Not only the elephants you can see different types of animals. Better if you arrange your safari between morning hours or afternoon around 2.30-3.00.
Eranga Indrajith Kaluarachchi — Google review
Amazing park if you want to spot some elephants! We saw 50 in total from 1 to herds from 15 with babies. Total 3h park ride, everything included we payed 22000 rupee with a jeep, guide and park entrance. Highly recommend this park if you want to spot elephants in the wild

It was amazing. We got really close to the elephants thanks to our lovely driver recommended by our Hotel. We also saw a lot of birds. It was a great trip.

Aber die wollen den Touristen, also uns lediglich ein gutes Erlebnis bieten 😉 (Translated by Google) A few days ago we were able to admire a lot of elephants during a safari because they are currently in this region. We had a private safari, which our driver organized. If we stopped, the engine was switched off, which I thought was very good. Of course the jeeps go where elephants can be seen. The animals always seemed relaxed to me and sometimes came very close to the cars and continued to eat. Even as a tourist you can say that we don't like it when the animals are harassed too much (for our understanding) but our guide didn't do this and we were extremely satisfied. In our opinion, other jeeps were a bit too intrusive. But they just want to offer the tourists, i.e. us, a good experience 😉

The Hurulu forest reserve is a very important habitat of the Sri Lankan elephant. The Hurulu forest reserve represents the dry-zone dry evergreen forests Sri Lanka. Very natural ,morning is the best time but it is opening little late like 7 am that is the only problem .Jeep safari is really good ,one view point is there that is really good .
Dr.Gitanjali Goswami Himanka — Google review
We saw lots of elephants which was our main purpose. Only a few jeeps and this was what made the difference with other safaris. Very nice experience overall
Chu Palones — Google review
Elephants plenty, other animals few. Too Many jeeps. Worth it if interested.
Heri D' Pascal — Google review
Hurulu National Park boasts beautiful landscapes and wildlife, but my experience was significantly dampened by over-tourism. The excessive number of jeeps inside the park greatly detracted from the natural beauty and tranquility one would expect. The park management needs to limit the number of vehicles allowed at any given time and increase the presence of trained rangers to ensure a more sustainable and enjoyable experience for all visitors. While the park itself has the potential to offer a remarkable encounter with nature, the current situation with overcrowding needs urgent attention.
Maximilian Mende — Google review
We wanted to go to Mineriya but it was closed because of the season, so we ended up in Hurulu. We spoted many elephants and that was cute, but the park was was incredibly packed with jeeps. Every time we spoted an elephant a minimum 10-15 jeeps would gather arround. I wonder if that’s respectful for the animals… I think that if Minneriya had been opened, Hurulu wouldn’t have been so packed, so that’s something to consider. On the other side, there’s no much animal diversity
Aida Conde Izquierdo — Google review
Amazing park! I got the impression most Jeep tour operators are about the same. Expect to see several groups and an occasional bull elephant, peacocks, monkeys and great vistas. A unique experience.
Steve Peck — Google review
The safari organized by Seerock hotel, it was a very nice experience as the driver is desperate to show us more animals we enjoyed a lot as a family. All the safari trucks have option of opening the upper cover of the truck therefore we are free and the safari is very much enjoyable.
chandrasegar veeramuthu — Google review
We saw lots of elephants and a wild buffalo. But I felt the money was not really worth it cause when you come to the main road too you can see many elephants on the side.
Dukesheeka J — Google review
I did a lot of research to find the best ethical elephant safari in Sri Lanka and this is it. This park is not crowded, very lush, you see a lot of elephants, peacocks, hornbills and eagles. The jeeps are very respectful of the animals. Plus, it is cheaper than most parks (cost me 15,000 rupees for the jeep + entrance for one person, 20k if you are two people). I did the safari on a week day at 7am. The most jeeps we had in one spot was 10. Nothing compared to Yala or Udawalawe where you can have 50 jeeps in one spot. I highly recommend this place.

The surrounding area is lush and green, with many different types of birds inhabiting the trees and flowers around the lake. There are also several boat rides available to explore the depths of the water, making it an ideal spot for birdwatching as well.
Habarana Lake, situated in the Habarana region of Sri Lanka, is a picturesque reservoir formed by the construction of a dam. Spanning around 210 acres, it's not only a scenic spot but also a vital water source for irrigation in the surrounding areas. The lake's tranquil waters offer a serene setting, attracting tourists for activities like boat rides where visitors can enjoy the scenic beauty, spot various bird species, and experience the peaceful ambiance of the area. Surrounding the lake are lush greenery and diverse wildlife, adding to its natural charm. Many travelers visit Habarana Lake as part of exploring the Cultural Triangle due to its proximity to ancient cities like Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, and Sigiriya.

Pleasant Experience Since we arrived in Habarana early, around 0930 on 8th August 2018, well before the checking-in time at the hotel, we decided to while away the time by visiting Habarana Lake, situated about 4 km from Habarana Junction. It was an unexpectedly pleasant and an enjoyable experience. This is a public place and requires no permission nor tickets. We went along the gravel path on top of the lake bund. On one side is the lake and on the other side is a lush green forest and trees with chirping and twittering birds. We saw some people from the village enjoying a bath in the lake. There were some boats with fishermen too at the centre of the lake. At the end of the lake bund is the spillway that carries spill water when the tank spills over. There is a sluice gate too that provides irrigation water to the fields downstream. Although this walk along the bund would not take more than 30 minutes one way we spent about two hours enjoying the scenery and soaking its quiet beauty. Although you can drive along the path you have to turn back at the end of the bund. Situated close to the entrance is a safari company that carries people atop elephants. These colourfully dressed elephants with its human cargo too are taken along the bund accompanied by the mahouts. Though I found this sight rather distressing, many tourists did ascend the seats placed on the elephants for a ride lasting perhaps about 30 minutes.

Habarana lake, one of the most captivating places and prime attractions of the city. Habarana Lake is perfect for taking elephant-back rides or walking amid serene surroundings of the lake area. The lake is also suitable for bird-watching.

Small lake with a motorable bund, about a 1km long if you walk along the granite hill then gravel road. Flocks of waterbirds can be seen through out the day, better in the early mornings. Use to be the center for elephant back rides, hopefully that will be stopped. There is a small bar close to where the rock and gravel road meet looks nice for sundown drinks.

The place boasts stunning surroundings and offers a multitude of activities to engage in, ensuring an amazing trip for everyone who visits this extraordinary getaway.
A night safari to Paluguswewa As planned, Pradeep with his friend naturalist Amal picked Murali and me up at 8 p.m. in his Toyota Land cruiser BJ43, a 1978 model beast he purchased from the military auction. As we boarded the vehicle, Amal equipped us with powerful spotlights and night vision goggles. Amal was scanning both sides of the mud path with his red-filtered lights, and the first encounter was with a pair of glowing eyes at a distance. He identified it as a fishing cat. We got down from the jeep and moved slowly in the direction. Sensing our presence, it started driving back; we could see the glowing eyes moving farther. After a few minutes of waiting, we started again. As we ventured deeper into the safari, we encountered nightjars, a jungle cat, packs of jackals, and a crocodile resting on the mud path, which vanished in a few seconds, sensing our presence, roosting grey hornbill and other birds. The most magical moment was when we saw the glowing eyes of a grey slender loris, the first time in my life. We got out of the vehicle slowly and tried to locate it without making noise, but it was moving away and deep. We waited silently, tracking its path with the red filter spotlight. Suddenly, a few alarm calls from spotted deer shivered down our spines, and we started moving. After a while, Amal screamed to stop the vehicle, noticing a pair of sparkling eyes in the dark again. We got down and walked with cat steps to the area; down the mud path in the tall grass, we saw another loris on a small isolated tree and could move near. The shy mammal hid inside the leaves, and we waited silently without moving. Then it came out slowly, and we could click a few pictures. We returned to our hotel by 2 a.m. Thanks to Piyumal Pradeep and Amal for the unforgettable experience of witnessing the mysteries of nature unfold under the cover of darkness.

Dewata Villas Village Restaurant is a remarkable and distinctive establishment in Sri Lanka. Situated amidst a charming woodland, it requires a short stroll along a small trail to reach. The restaurant boasts an open layout, with the owner's personal touch evident in every detail. The cuisine served here is truly fantastic, accompanied by refreshing cold beer and impeccable service. For those seeking an authentic culinary adventure away from touristy options, this hidden gem is a must-visit destination.
Our favourite meal so far in Sri Lanka. We decided to forgo the tourist food in the hotel and we were so glad we did. A son and father run this pan Asian restaurant and it's fabulous. Rustic inside and food cooked to order. Just wished I had taken a picture of the menu. Nasi Goreng was amazing

Fantastic restaurant for more than just the food. The food was great, fresh and delicious. We had the Chicken Kottu and the vegetable pakora was amazing. It is a family run restaurant and the service was very good. There were two additional excellent experiences: 1. There is a live guitarist singing popular western music, and he is great and friendly and will take requests. 2. The restaurant owner makes the most amazing sculptures out of old car parts. A guitar, an owl, a helicopter, and many more. He is a talented and creative artist and very proud of his sculptures. Overall a great local experience. Highly recommend a visit here for tourists.

Yes two stars only. Its a place hidden from the road. Have to walk through a tiny ally. Not much advertisements on the record. Found it thanks to goole maps. Decided to go there coz of high reviews. Tiny cozy place. Covered by marsh and trees. Not much lighting and have a rustic theme for everything. Server was friendly. The menue wasnt extensive. Prices seems to be targeted towards foreigners. We went with a mixed grilled platter just to check out the food quality as we had time. Food took some time to come but it was freshly made. Taste wasnt fantastic. But the quantity was not enough for the price we had to pay. They servered enough condiments for three more plates. The plate consisted of garlic rice, two pieces of tasty grilled chicken, two cheap chicken sausages, few rings of calamari, one grilled prawn, overly salted and old french fires. Best thing on the dish was the salad. We decided not to order anymore. Wouldnt reccomend to locals as there are so many other better options for that price range.

Yesterday i conducted a birding trail with well experienced and i would say experts on birding from Netherlands. We did an eight hour trail and at the end we all were really exhausted and hungry. So they requested me to find a good, clean & decent place to order their lunch. I took them to Devata Villa Habarana as i do always, as this is a peaceful, clean and good place for food. Also chef Lakmals food and presentation of food is par excellence. These words that i uttered in the above line was confirmed by my Netherland friend who used to patronised Ceylon quite a sometimes. What my friends said was that they had the best of the best food in Ceylon so far. Lakmal is also a fantastic creator of waste iron and metal parts and those creations gives an impression that you are in a garage, and you would be able to observe all his amazing art work once you visit Devata Villa Habarana. Also my friends were so amazed to see an original "Phillips" Tube (Valve) radio still producing music with Crystal clear sound. No doubt i will recommend most certainly this place at any given time for your meals.

Starting of with the environment, the young boy (waiter) provided a good service by being super polite and asking us what we need. The owner (chef) of the shop is the person who cooked us the Koththu (see below). He had done a good job on the seating (furniture) as he kept it simple. They have kept the kitchen area clean and simple, even a guest could visit without a doubt for cleanliness. I would name their Koththu as "The best" ever I had, trust me, I'm absolutely not a Koththu fan but this made me crave for more. It was so succulent, cooked to the right amount, not to dry or not to slurpy with Curry. It had the right amount of spices, seasoning and garnish, with a finish of fried chopped chicken peices. I would recommend and give a 5* to the Koththu. Don't forget to tell them about your spice level. After a long ride on safari, or feel like you wanted take a break for the same old hotel menu card and try some Sri Lankan street food. This is the place to be.. They even had a writing wall, which you could leave a comment after a full diet. Which we did..

Partner and I came for lunch. Priced at 850 rs per person. I ate all vegetables and no meat. Papadum triangle was a bit salty than what I am used too. No issue though. My partner had almost everything. He has a preference for a chicken or pork dish however he liked the lake fish. Lovely, clean setting and was almost empty when we arrived on Sunday around 1:50pm. Chef was cleanly dressed in his white attire so cute because there was no one there to impress but I was! Give it a try for lunch.

We have eaten here twice in two days and will definitely visit again. The food is excellent and really good value. They also do a lunchtime buffet, but we haven't had a chance to try yet. The service is friendly. We are vegetarian and on the first night we wanted curry and rice. They made us a variation on the menu especially and brought out a large number of really tasty dishes. The second night we had the biryani (probably vegan although we only specified vegetarian so would need to check for ghee) and the speciality crispy vegetable platter ( wouldn't be vegan as egg in the batter which we were told, and so the chef is clearly aware of specific dietary requirements and is easy to communicate with). The place itself is really nice in a timber framed hut type setting but you will need insect repellent especially if eating at dusk...as with any open air restaurant in Sri Lanka. Highly recommend.

Lovely place to stop for lunch on our way back to Colombo. We are vegan and all the dishes on the buffet were vegan except for one dish of fish. Nice atmosphere and very clean. Highly recommend this restaurant for lunch!

Environmental friendly Calm and comfortable Atmosphere to sit and break the fast. Staffs were very friendly and helpful. We tried Sri Lankan rice and curry buffet served on clay pot which was fabulous in look with different verity of curries. The flavor was nice and we had a fried fish extra potion which was also good in taste. People who were traveling, looking for a great meal near habarana will definitely try this place And i would like to mention The Washroom facilities were also very clean & tidy.

I had lunch from this place on my way to Sigiriya. Even though I asked for the price of the buffet per head they refused to tell me the price at first. The buffet was over priced compared to other restaurants in that area. The food was not that good. I think they have rooms too. There was pool which had green colour water. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

Your driver would stop the car here for lunch/dinner and then push you into a spice garden post your meal where you're duped for 'ayurvedic oils' Horrible food. Please order your own food instead of going for the buffet.

This Hotel is Located in Habarana You Can Travel to the Sigiriya ( 13 km) Atmostpire Of the Hotel is Unique and Large. This is Most Suitable Place for foreigners. They Had Lot of Meals Menu also they make lots of Drinks ( Alcohol also). They make Food after we order. This is soo fresh cooking 🍳 but it takes more time to make foods so we want to wait more than 45 minutes to eat. We ordered Biriyani 🍗 They Give us Biriyani Rice With 2/3 large chicken peices, Rytha, Egges, Jam, Chicken Gravy Also. Taste Wise Rice is good with lots of Cashew nuts and peanuts 🥜 but it's not make the feel of Biriyani. Chicken Fry Very Jummy and the Jam they made is ultimate. They Made Lots of the time to make foods & price is too much for a locals . 1 Biriyani is 2800 /= it is very expensive for us. Taste is good. Other wise service & place is too good. Try Something Once here. Mostly Recommended for Foreigners. 💞

Sundown at Lakeside Habarana is a charming oasis located by the lake, offering a warm and hospitable atmosphere. The owner truly understands what hospitality means, creating a welcoming environment for visitors. This hidden gem provides an ideal setting for capturing stunning sunset golden hour pictures. In addition to its picturesque views, the restaurant offers a selection of wine and beer to enhance your dining experience. Despite the challenges Sri Lanka faces with supplies, the owner's welcoming nature compensates for any inconveniences.
Little oasis by the lake. Love the vibe, the owner really knows what hospitality is. Very welcoming place, and absolutely great for sunset golden hour pictures! They have some wine and beer to enjoy as well. As we are all aware Sri Lanka is having some challenges with supplies, but the owner makes you feel so welcome, it makes up for everything. Had the kothu, and he made it with less roti, more vegetables, at my preference. Little bit hard to find, but a real hidden gem! Would recommend having dinner before sunset, due to current power outages that are unpredictable. All in all, great experience and a must visit!

We had an amazing experience! Delicious fresh fish straight from the beautiful lake that you overlook while eating. Extremely friendly and helpful staff, who helped us plan our elephant safari! If you’re in Habarana this one is a must.

This was such a hidden gem, we never would have found it had it not been for looking up restaurants in google. This place had amazing reviews and it’s easy to see why. Everything from the food to the location was amazing. The prawns were huge and juicy and everything was super fresh and made to order. The service could not have been friendlier he was extremely accommodating and even ordered us a Tuk Tuk back to our hotel as it was getting late. Definitely a must visit!

I write this review while still sitting at our table at Sundown at Lakeside on a Sunday night at 9 pm! We arrived at 7:30 pm to know that they were out of all kinds of dishes except the prawns! We took the prawns and have zero regrets!!! Best prawns we have ever tried and the best service and the friendliest smiling owner you could come across! We absolutely love it here, the only downside is we came after dark so we missed what was sure to be a gorgeous view of sunset over the lake. I would give 10 out of 5 if I could!

Jerry made me very welcome, made me a cocktail and such a tasty meal, highly recommended this spot for dinner at sunset. Ring him direct as drivers often don't know about this place and will take you elsewhere.
