Pidurangala Rock

Mentioned on
Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
The ancient rock of Pidurangala is famous for its archeological sites and stunning panoramic views. It's a few kilometers north of Sigiriya, and most people come at sunset to see the beauty of the setting sun. A return three-wheeler ride costs around Rs 700, and includes waiting time.
Amazing view from the top! We climbed in the dark, which is a (fun) challenge, even with a good torch as we had. Just take your time and don't rush it: we did it in about 20-30 minutes. It's definitely worth the climb, even tough we didn't see the sun rise because of clouds, it was an amazing experience. As we understood, only at the beginning you have to cover your knees and shoulders, because of the temple close to the entrance. Ps: entrance fee was 500.
Christiaan Wijnia — Google review
Must go place if you are in Sri Lanka. The sunrise viewed from here is fabulous. Will be dark at a few spots not covered by lighting when you begin climbing for a sunrise, so carry a torch or mobile phone with a torch. Take a small bottle of drinking water as the climb can be tiring. Takes 30-45 minutes to climb and the boulders at the end of the climb are a little challenging. Don't carry anything too heavy. Hire a guide at the ticket counter if you are not confident of your climbing skills or fitness levels. There is a temple on the way up, so make sure you cover your shoulders and knees when passing the place. No photographs allowed at this temple, typically.
Janardhan Hanumantha Rao — Google review
About a 30 min climb up to the top but well stair’ed apart from the last few minutes, it’s a bit more of a clamber up some rocks. Well worth it though, we did it for sunrise and it was stunning. Not toooo crowded but still a fair few people. Would be quieter to do throughout the day but seeing sunrise / sunset from here is beautiful. Also £2.36 entrance instead of like 30 for lions rock!
Steff Littleford — Google review
Beautiful sight and definitely worth to go! Very cheap entrance compared to Sigiriya and I think the hike is fairly good. Really nice for sunrise especially! We got here just before sunrise and it took us round about 20min to get up. There were a few people to be fair but it still feels like it’s not too crowded. Honestly felt a bit surreal being up there. Noteworthy: Since the there is a temple at the bottom that you hav to pass right after the entrance, I would recommend to bring something to cover knees and shoulders. If not they sell it there as well.
Chris Lange — Google review
Perfect to see a foggy Sigiriya in the early morningy which is really beautiful. It's a little challenging in the end to climb to the top but we saw a (lovely) 80 yr old woman and parents with little children on the back managing the climb so (with a little help) you can manage it too. The view is rewarding. There are some dogs like nearly everywhere in Sri Lanka but they are friendly. We paid 2.000 LKR per person.

Pidurangala is an ancient Buddhist cave temple that has a trail up the mountain to the top. It is about 45 minutes for the climb. The trail starts through the temple so be mindful of your attire. You also need to take off headwear and footwear while going through the temple grounds. The trail has stairs and steps for most of the way. The last leg is pretty steep and you have to climb through boulders and rock faces to reach the top. The view atop the mountain is breathtaking! You get a 360 degree view. Be really mindful if you are attempting the climb with children as the trail does not have lot of safeguards. Best time to visit is the morning. Trail is open at 5:00am so that you can view the sunrise from the top. No charges for locals but I thought I saw tickets being issued for foreigners. You do need to pay for parking.
Amal Weerasooriya — Google review
This place is truly amazing with the scenery. Love the feeling of standing on the top of everything. It’s interesting to see the crowd struggling and queuing for getting up to the lion rock on the other side. Just 1000 SLR. Worth the climb 🧗🏻‍♀️.
Choya the diver — Google review
A beautiful climb. The climb is not that hard until you reach the top most where there are rocks and you will require some help. There are no tickets for the locals but you will have to ensure to wear decent clothing as you need to go for the hike from a temple. But our overall experience was 10/10
Dukesheeka J — Google review
One of the beautiful place to see panoramic view of Sigiriya area as well as see the sunset and sunrise. 40 min climb from the start point to come to the top. Need to be careful when you are climbing because some areas are bit slippery. There are plenty of space for parking at the entrance. You have to be enter to the pidurangala temple first get into the trail starting point
Harsha — Google review
Amazing views. Definitely worth it! Plan for sunrise or sunset hike of ~30min. See monkeys and an ancient buddha statue on the handcrafted stone stair the way up. Take the rubbish some mindless individuals are throwing away with you on the way down.
Stefan Weixelbaumer — Google review
Great place to visit. Around 30 minutes hike with great sceneries to enjoy. You'll be gifted with a breathtaking view of Sigiriya and the surroundings once you reach the top.
Ravindu Abeygunawardena — Google review
Embarking on a morning hike with friends to a rock temple led to an adventurous challenge. My friends' assistance, pushing and guiding me through tough spots, mirrored true camaraderie. Crawling, sitting, and unconventional maneuvers added a touch of vulnerability. Yet, the view from the peak was an exquisite reward, justifying the unconventional journey. The mix of accomplishment and natural beauty made the experience truly worthwhile, a testament to both friendship and nature's allure.
Madavi Gunaratne — Google review
Pindurangala is indeed a breathtaking and awe-inspiring sightseeing destination. The hike to reach it is nothing short of exceptional, offering an experience that words alone cannot do justice to. The sheer beauty of the natural surroundings leaves you speechless, and it's a place where nature's grandeur truly shines
Athina Perera — Google review
We went for the sunrise and what an amazing experience. Topped off with the monkeys! Worth going up early, as even at this time there is a bottle neck at the top and we had to wait 5-10 minutes for people to get through.
Daniel Crane — Google review
Amazing experience climbing there, and the view was super nice as well. It's totally worth it, but dont forget to hydrate and protect yourself from the burning sun ( 34 degrees temperature) and wear a good hiking shoes because there is a little bit of climbing (nothing too scary or hard).
Charly Hokayem — Google review
If you want to see the beauty of Sigiriya, I highly recommend you to climb Pidurangala. The temple, the Samadhi statue and the surroundings seem to be unified as if they were not created by humans. Come back without polluting that beautiful environment. If you climb that mountain on a rainy day, wear shoes with a good grip. At the end of the stairs, you have to walk carefully on slippery rocks.
Suran Chanaka — Google review
Good to visit this place early in the morning or in the evening. Beautiful view on the top. Can see Sigiriya in a better view. Path is little bit difficult. Last few steps are little bit scary. Not recommended for old people. Slippery roads. But the view is amazing on the top.
Akalanka Kudagama — Google review
The sunrise view from Lion rock was stunning. Really worth to do it to get a closer look of the rock. The site opens around 4:30. They are lights in the path and very well maintain rock steps. It took us 20 minutes to go up with 3-4 stops to catch our breath. Don’t get scared of the last part, it basically 5-6 big rocks that you need to go up on it, nothing scary. It would however help for small people that they put a few handles in the rock like elsewhere in the world. At the bottom you enter directly in the temple, so you need to either bring cover up items (no short and no cami are accepted ) or borrow a scarf for them which probably cost something. They let my boyfriend enter with shorts.
Tina Boudreault — Google review
Entering the site costs $25 per person. The place is very big, walking is possible but in my opinion unnecessary, the distances are far from one building to another. I recommend that those who come either rent bikes and ride around with them or take the tuk tuk that brought them to ride around with you between the stations. The place is very beautiful and impressive, come with hats 😊
einav ben shitrit — Google review
The view from the top of the rock is just mesmerizing. The strong breeze up there will quickly wipe away all that tiredness from the climb. You'll have to kick off your shoes when you get to the entrance where there's a temple, but once you're past that you can keep climbing with your shoes on. Plus you'll spot some awesome ancient Buddhist structural ruins on the way to the top. Can complete the journey within 2-3 hours unless you spend some quality time on the top of the rock.
pulindu jayathunga — Google review
Awesome view. Great place to visit in srilanka. Its bit hard to go to the top. You have to go through rocks. But at the end the view makes you feels like heaven.
Manul Madara — Google review
Did this hike a few days just before sunset and loved it! The hike ip does take around 30-40 minutes if you're in decent shape and I do recommend to bring a head lamp with you to be able to make it back down once the sun sets! I read somewhere that water bottles were not allowed, but to be honest when we arrived no one said anything and I'm so happy that I took one because I definitely needed it! The hike is not "easy" and definitely not doable for everyone especially the last 10 minutes where you have to climb up boulders, but for those healthy enough I recommend this hike! You will not regret it!
Chris Rodriguez — Google review
Arduous climb, not for the faint-hearted. But amazing views at the top including Lions Rock! Costs $3, much better than the $30 it costs to climb the main one.
Shai Hussain — Google review
Pidurangala is a fantastic place to visit and offers a great view of the opposing Lion‘s Rock. We went here to watch the sunset and it was wonderful. Going up takes about 1 hour and is easily manageable. In the end, though, you might have to wait a little because there is a small passage with a little climbing. So make sure to concealed enough before sunset or sunrise because there are many people.
Benedikt Backhaus — Google review
Must visit. The first part of the hike is kinda easy, just stairs. But the second part is could be hard if you’re not fit enough. You have to climb and go through narrow holes between rocks. However the view is amazing.
Tamás Pető — Google review
Great view! First time hikers might find it difficult. If you are starting early morning better to carry a small torch (for those who dont want to drop your phone) The view is worth the climb!
Manuvidya Jeevakumar — Google review
Beautiful view! Great for sunrise but start early - there’s a line of people right before the top (recommend to start 5:15) Be prepared for somewhat demanding climb/going over and between rocks for 50m at the end. No problem for sporty hikers but can be a challenge for people with knee/hip problems. Therefore, people end up queuing
Elisabeth Bjerke Svanberg — Google review
Pidurangala Rock is an incredible 360-degree viewpoint located opposite the world-famous Sigiriya Lion Rock. The view from the top is simply breathtaking and worth your climb and tiredness. Entrance fee for tourists LKR 1000 per person (free for locals). The fee is part of a donation to the Pidurangala Sigiri Rajamaha Viharaya temple that you pass through to commence the hike. Ticket office opens at 5 am and closes at 6 pm. It takes about 30 / 45 minutes to climb up. You start your climb near the temple from where there are series of stairs, then slightly ‘off-road’ pathway through the jungle, slowly ascending over rocks and tree roots, through caves, and past rocky cliffs before making its way to the first stop on the hike, Pidurangala temple ruins. Further up the last 50 m is a bit tricky as it requires a decent amount of bouldering, climbing and shimmying between giant boulders and cliffs. Concentrate on your footing in this last section of the trail. Wearing hiking shoes will be better as proper gripping is required. There are rest sections on the trail but do carry adequate water / hydration fluids.
Time Travelers India — Google review
It is a long and a little difficult way to go up. And more difficult to go down, especially if you are planning to be on the rock top for sunset. After sunset, the way down is dark. Just a few lights are on the way. It is better to use phone light or special light. The view from the top is fantastic. Very beautiful.
Anna Vilsone — Google review
Somewhat tricky to climb (especially the last bit) but when you get up there, it's one of the most picturesque scenes you can have in Sri Lanka. Local tourists walk free of charge but foreign tourists have to pay at the entrance. It is an approximately 30-minute climb if you are an average person. Suggested times to visit are the sunrise & sunset.

The Sigiriya Museum is an archaeological museum located in the ruins of the ancient fortress of Sigiriya, just meters away from the site. The exhibits include a variety of pottery and terracotta heads and figures, as well as a replica of an ancient iron kiln. The museum is excellent for local history buffs, with interesting details about how Sigiriya developed over time. It also has air conditioning, making it perfect for hot midday hours.
It’s a small museum must to visit there then you can easily understand the history of sigiria .

The museum offers a wealth of archaeological artifacts, informative displays, and detailed explanations, providing a comprehensive understanding of the ancient city's cultural and architectural brilliance. Its engaging exhibits, coupled with multimedia presentations, enhance the experience, making it a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and tourists seeking a deeper appreciation of Sri Lanka's rich heritage.

Excellent and definitely a must do when in Sigiriya! Gives you a nice overview of how Sigiriya developed over time, carefully designed, very well preserved exhibits with great explanations. I was especially hooked by the 3D animation of how the old palace/monastery might have looked like. Perfect for the very hot midday hours after having climbed Sigiriya in the morning because it has AC.

very cool modernist building and nice museum. Good to visit ahead of lion rock to learn about the history, artefacts, urban planning and see replicas of the cave paintings

The climb is well worth the effort, such amazing history. And the whole park is worth exploring. The museum in site also has some great archaeology from the site, the video showing how the temple would have looked gives a great insight to this magical Lion rock 😄🙏
Howard Lunn — Google review
The museum is included when you buy tickets for climbing up the Lion Rock of Sigiriya. Definitely take the time to go see it. It won’t take too long. The exhibits are worth seeing and may even be one of the oldest objects you’ve ever seen. Be aware that taking photos isn’t allowed inside the museum.

(Translated by Google) If you buy an admission ticket to climb Sigiriya Rock, you can also enter the museum, but the museum alone was $5. The exhibition room was not allowed to take pictures, and the use of mobile phones was not allowed. Aside from taking pictures, I'm the type who wants to look at the exhibition while researching various things on my smartphone, so that's a bit disappointing. The restrooms are clean (need a tip). Posters and postcards are also sold at the bookstore in the museum.

Sigiriya Sri Lanka is the most beautiful architectural site that I have ever seen. Visit this UNESCO heritage site. And don't forget to visit the meuseam.

An important place that every tourist should visit. Every section of the museum displays the lifestyle of the Sigiriya civilization. Moreover there's a protocol of the Sigiriya Rock and the ancient civilization structure with irrigation systems and agriculture. If you are interested to know more about the civilization I recommend this place. Also it is a good place to visit for the disabled people who can't reach the top of the rock. Even there's a seperate path for the Wheel Chairs.

The place is newly nicely developed. Great initiations. It would have been nice if there were photo souvenirs as well with the art works. Visitors would love it. They do not allow you to take pictures, but at least for dummy paintings I think it would have been nice if they allow taking pictures. You can try writing Sinhala and there is a drawing opportunity as well for kids. You can play some games too. Still under construction. It would be great after the construction work is done. You can buy tickets online as well. We went on a weekday so there were lot of school children suggest going in a weekend or to go early morning to avoid such instances

If we want to climb the Sigiriya rock first of all we need to go to the Sigiriya Museum . Because first we need to know about the history of Sigiriya ,geographic location ,topography and routes of sigiriya . it’s like a trailer of the film. in there lots of ancient statues , ancient equipment , ancient jewelry items and that period Peoples way of life we can see. at this museum staffs are very kindly and friendly. clean and calm place.

The Archaeological Museum in Sigiriya is a hidden gem that offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich history and cultural heritage of the ancient rock fortress and its surroundings. Located near the entrance to the Sigiriya site, this museum proved to be a valuable addition to my overall experience. Upon entering the museum, I was impressed by its well-organized layout and informative exhibits. The collection showcased a diverse range of artifacts, including ancient tools, pottery, sculptures, and other archaeological finds that provided valuable insights into the lives of the people who once inhabited this historic site. The museum's curation and presentation of the exhibits were commendable. Detailed explanations, along with visuals and interactive displays, helped bring the past to life and made the information easily understandable even for those less familiar with archaeology. One highlight of the museum was the display of the excavation process at Sigiriya, giving visitors a glimpse into the meticulous work done by archaeologists to unearth and preserve the site's history. This interactive exhibit offered a unique perspective on the process of uncovering ancient treasures. The museum's staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and readily answered any questions, adding to the enriching experience. Their passion for preserving Sri Lanka's cultural heritage was evident, and their willingness to share insights made the visit even more memorable. However, I would have appreciated a larger space for the museum, as some sections felt a bit cramped during peak hours when the number of visitors was higher. Overall, the Archaeological Museum in Sigiriya is a must-visit for history enthusiasts, providing a comprehensive overview of the ancient civilization that once thrived at this iconic location. Whether you're exploring Sigiriya or just curious about Sri Lanka's past, this museum is a captivating destination that complements the experience of discovering the wonders of Sigiriya.

Royal Retreat Hotel is situated in Sigiriya, a few minutes from the rock. The hotel offers outdoor pool and seafood restaurant as well as air conditioned rooms with cable tv, veranda and minibar.
We were 2 nights at the hotel. Family with 4 kids, and enjoyed very much. The rooms are big and well aqupide. We had great meals, breakfast and dinner. We got an excellent service from the staff: reception, chef, bellboys...everyone was very kind. We recommend.

We were welcomed warmly. The rooms are super spacious. For me, one of the things that got my attention was having two luggage racks in the room, which most hotels don't have. I had a great Sri Lankan lunch, which was very tasty. Would recommend Royal Retreat to anyone, either visiting Sigiriya or its surrounding places of interest.

Our guide/driver knew of this place and took us there after our tour of Sigiriya Rock. It was very clean and pleasant atmosphere and tasty food. It’s a rather large dining room, so tours could be accommodated pretty easily. Our driver told us that the owner used to be a tour driver himself. We ordered the fried rice lunch plates and ginger beers. The fried rice was tasty and they had homemade chili spice that enhanced the flavors. And if you haven’t tasted the Sri Lanka ginger beer, you’re in for a sweet and ginger-y treat!
Jonathan Jump — Google review
The rooms were so spacious and clean. However, I am not satisfied with the quantity of food served. We ordered 2 chicken plates. When I saw its size, I couldn't believe it. Taking food from this hotel is not recommended.

Don't stay here. I showed them a booking that fitted 5 people that I had. They refused to honor it and tried to charge me double when we arrived . I complained about it but they didn't care . I refused it and left. I showed them proof and asked for the management. But they just didn't care.
Andi Crowe — Google review
Only thing saving it from getting a one star is that the staff were polite and is in a good location for seeing the rocks and safari. We booked this place and paid more for the pool which was unable to be used which was very disappointing. Seems to be an ongoing trend from previous recent reviews . Even from previous owned in 2019. People took the risk and went in but don’t think staff should let people in a green pool as it can make them sick. We had to ask 3 times one night for new towels. Then the next day were told our room would be cleaned, arrived back in the evening to it not being done. Staff nod and are polite but don’t register what has been said.

Staff at this hotel were so friendly and helpful. They made our stay so comfortable and enjoyable. Rooms were so specious and clean. Location wise so close to the Sigiriya rock and Sigiriya town too. Specially the manager who was really helpful and cooperative lady.

Swimming pool water was green colour. Room number 93 bath tub is leaking and its a connected room and walls are super thin can hear everything what was talked. Some point pipes started to do super loud noice, like someone banging on the wall. Food was finished when we arrive to breakfast and had to wait long time and it’s not worth the money. Toothpicks had a fungus and pepper and salt container is full of corrosion with liquid. The hotline numbers for reception was not working and one number was diverted to someone else witch is not connected to hotel
Anneli Jayalath — Google review
Can't really recommend it. We had short 10min power outages, which was annoying. The Pool was deep green (not nearly chlored enough), which for a price of 85$ for 2 nights (two people) (sneaky commision fee) is unacceptable. What was really weird where the power sockets. There were no free sockets near the bed. I then unplugged the night lamp and it was the british adapter Not Typ D. Unlucky. Had to use the power socket near the TV. Door was pretty hard to open, scrapped across the ground constantly. We also had to asked for toilette paper and for someone to explain the TV. Noone ever came for the problem with the TV. For people new to Sri Lanka: You get 1L of bottled water from the hotel. For more it is smarter to buy water from supermarket. (5l Container)

Amazing place with lovely staff! You can see and feel that they all work hard to give you the best experience. The only minor thing that could be improved is that not all of the staff speaks English. Which off course isn't rare in an Asian country. But this being my only 'complaint' shows only how amazing everything else was! I totally recommend! 👍🙂💥

Great service by the lovely owners. It is just 10-15 minutes walk from the lion rock entrance. You will still have to go by Tuktuk if you want to go early morning, considering walking can be dangerous because of wild elephants roaming the area. My only suggestion to people looking at this villa would be to NOT book the standard double room. It is in the old house where the owner lives and does not meet the quality and hygiene standards. The other rooms are in the back house villa and look pretty good (hopefully better quality).

The rooms are airy and comfortable, with a range of facilities including free Wi-Fi and 24-hour room service. There's also an outdoor swimming pool and restaurant on the premises.
1. Spacious rooms which were clean and have a good amount of sunlight and ventilation. 2. Pool is well maintained and is of a good size for a swim. 3. Rooms have a beautiful view of the forest and starry night sky. 4. Special credits and kudos to Chef Dinesh and team for a wonderful vegetarian meal cooked specially for us. Sumptuous breakfast and dinner with great service. Hotel was sparsely occupied owing to the fuel crisis and limited travel of locals. But please don't worry about travel, tourist vehicles are prioritized for fuel and everyone in Sri Lanka are extremely friendly and hospitable. Even during riots no tourists are troubled. Definitely visit and explore this beautiful country.

Rooms were clean but old. Dogs and cats here and there. Even in restaurant. Basic buffet. No variations. Don’t agree with set menus. They provided bread pudding as dessert. Staff not behaving friendly manner. They don’t have even basic manners. They are laughing at visitors. They provide artificial juices. No fresh juice available there. I request fresh juice for my kid and they said blender is not working 🤭. Damaged towels in rooms. No pool towels available. Poor starndars of Hygiene(Bedsheets & Towels). Actually Fresco is not a suitable place to enjoy. It is not worth for the price. Not recommended.

Lots of greenery and open space with water villas. Check in process was quick however we were provided with a twin bed instead of king size. Later got it changed to a king bed room which was far away from the pool and on the 2nd floor. Room 316. This room was not well maintained at all. It was a very disappointing stay here. The bed sheets were not clean and had stains on them. The floor was slippery for some reason. The hot water kettle was fully rusted and there were chip off on tea mugs. Also, the food here was even more disappointing. Hardly any spread for vegetarians. There were very few choices with just 2 desserts. Also. Since there is stagnant water in these villas, there are a lot of mosquitoes. This is definitely not a 4 star hotel. I wouldn’t recommend this hotel at all to anyone.

This hotel provided an incredible experience. The accommodations, in particular, seemed magnificent. and there are teeny small pounds all throughout the rooms. includes a plethora of fish, turtles, and even more. The room service was excellent. even the variety of food that tastes and smells delicious. The entire experience was wonderful.

Environment - A sense of seaside resort feel when I saw the coconut tree and pool. Room - The room is clean and tidy. The balcony is good place to stay early in the morning. The sunshine is just nice. Food - The poori with veggie curry is nice. Service - Standard service provided. Location - 3km from Sigiriya Lion Stone. So even when I finish Pidurangala in 7pm++, I reach the hotel before 8pm. Facility - Bath tub and swimming pool is available. All the basic things needed in the hotel are available.

The water villas are in a great location and close to Sigiriya. You can watch fish feeding underneath the villas. Good size pool. The breakfast was served as a buffet and great selection available.

Great hotel for those visiting Sigiriya Rock and doing Safari nearby. Great amenities, pool and very spacious room. The food (dinner and breakfast was great). Not many VEGAN options but the chef was able to create something for us.

We had stayed for 1 day in this property. As a couple we were given 1+1 bed instead of single double bed. The bathroom was also damaged. The bathroom window was broken. Lack of toiletries in the bathroom. Less vegetarian options in the food. The only good thing about the property was, that they managed to provide the room in case of early check in.
Purvi Jain — Google review
I stayed here with my friends, worst hotel ever. Check-in was a nuisance, apparently they couldnt find our booking which was paid in advance. Took a good 15-20 mins to sort that out. Bathroom had very low water pressure initially with very hot water literally dripping. Then absolutely no water. Management keep requesting for 15-20mins to repair but no improvement. Avoid this hotel at all cost. Only giving 1 star because giving 0 stars isn’t possible!

Could have been better - no hot water on the second day of our stay. Towels were not fresh. No hand towels. Buffet food was good, spicy and hot - not a wide spread for veggies.

The Wijesiri Family Restaurant is a popular Sigiriya restaurant known for its excellent tea. The food here is tasty and affordable, and the staff are friendly and welcoming. There is free wifi, outdoor seating, and table service.

Sweetest family run restaurant with amazing food. The owner is very friendly but not intrusive and will be happy to recommend dishes and answer any questions. The fruit juices are very tasty. We both had the Vegetable Kotthu, one spicy and one mild, and both were delicious. Would highly recommend :)

I’ve been in Sri Lanka for almost 5 weeks and this is honestly the best rice and curry I’ve had in Sri Lanka hands down!! Absolute must when visiting Sigiriya! Family owned and run business that provide a really good service and are always happy. So glad I came here 😍

Marvelous family, delicious food, all homemade and with the original Sri Lankan taste. They food arrived on time and altogether, we were ten people. I ordered the vegetarian curry rice and then a typical flan with cinnamon and chocolate. They're also amazingly welcoming and kind. We've also visited the giftstore they have next to the restaurant, and the reggae bar on the other side, all from the same family. The prices are also very good! Highly recommended!!

We had lunch here devilled prowns and cuttlefish. Only 5 prowns in prowns dish & Only 5 cut pieces of cuttlefish in cuttlefish dish. But the price was very high. Food is served on a small dessert plate not a meal plate too. Friut juices were tasty.

Great family restaurant serving authentic Sri Lankan food. Staff are friendly and happy to talk to you about their lives, country and culture. If you’re in Sigiriya as a tourist (especially western) don’t be sucked in by the aesthetics and lights of some of the other larger restaurants (nothing against them). The building may not be the most eye catching but Sri Lanka is strict on building regulations and sadly small businesses struggle to expand and develop without paying for signatures. If you’re looking for good authentic food from a local family this is the one.

Ahinsa Restaurant offers a pleasant dining experience with amiable hosts and staff. The cuisine is delectable, with the egg kothu being particularly well-prepared. However, one drawback is the charge for hot drinking water, which differs from neighboring establishments where it is complimentary. Despite this, Ahinsa Restaurant comes highly recommended as a charming eatery. The holiday rush may have caused some bustling activity among the staff and moments of perceived brusqueness.
Really tasty food, possibly the best we've had here. Atmosphere was good and people were friendly. Definitely recommend :)

Well, I might say, that they have a daelicious food and a nice climate, however when I found a screw in my mouth I changed my mind. I showed it to the stuff....no sorry, apologies, refound proposal...nothing. Waiteress only concluded, that "It was probably in the rice". If she knows where it's.comming from I may assume it's happening often. :(

Had dinner in this restaurant since the overall appearance and the vibe is nice. Never thought that the food is horrible, with the pricing 4k for a mix grill platter is too much! It took for about 30 minutes waiting for a bland and undercooked fries, overall disappointed. One star on staff's service in getting our orders

It was good food and very friendly stuff! We ordered fish but they did not have fresh fish and they informed us about it. We changed our order and the chicken and the prawns were delicious. But the menu is a little bit limited.

We had a very late afternoon lunch here. The hosts and staff are friendly and the food was good. Egg kothu especially was done very well. The only negative aspect here was that we were charged for hot drinking water which is otherwise complementary in the restaurants next door. Would recommend this one.

Kenoli Restaurant is a charming family-owned eatery that offers a delightful dining experience. The warm and friendly hosts make every effort to ensure that guests feel right at home. The menu features hearty and authentic dishes, including generous portions of rice and curry with papadum, delicious chicken Kotthu and roti, as well as complimentary fruit plates. Visitors rave about the amazing food and generous portions, with some even mentioning their surprise at how much they were able to eat.
Amazing food! We couldn't stop eating. The waitor couldn't believe how much we ate. We had vegetable carry, chicken curry, fish curry, kothur with egg and another with vegetables and a vegetable roti. Take the Coconut roti for dessert (we got 2). We were 4 girls. Paid less than 5€ each. Totally worth it. Don't let the distance or the size the restaurant fool you. It's our second day in Sri Lanka and I don't know how we will find another place to top this. In the picture you can see less than the half of what we ate!

Went there because it was highly rated on google but dang, it didn’t disappoint. My boyfriend went there twice for our 2 days stay in Sigiriya. The rice and curry was great; generous portion and tasty. Also, it came with papadum so you have options for your carbs. The chicken Kotthu and chicken roti were delicious as well. The owner will give you chilli paste to adjust the spicy level as you like. Lastly, they have a complimentary fruit plate for you; we got some sugar banana and red banana to end our meal. Overall, lovely experience here!

We ate here 3 times as it was so good we didn’t want to risk trying somewhere else! The food was delicious. Chicken curry was the favourite and also the veg curries. It was inexpensive, amazingly flavoursome and the staff were lovely. Always busy, and there’s a reason. I wish they were in the UK!

Absolutely incredible evening in the Kenoli Restaurant. Price is way too low for what you get to be honest. Completely selfmade and the chef is getting you even more food if you want to. For free! The couple owning the restaurant is cooking themselves and they are so authentic, absolutely amazing! Definitely the best food we had in Sri Lanka.

Dining at this charming family-owned restaurant was an absolute delight. From the moment we stepped through the door, the warm and friendly hosts made every effort to ensure that we felt right at home. The difference in hospitality between this gem and the previous restaurant we visited, which felt a bit pushy, was like night and day. The menu, while straightforward, offered a selection of hearty and authentic dishes that left a lasting impression. It's often the simple and authentic flavors that make the most memorable meals, and this restaurant certainly delivered on that front. Every bite was a journey into culinary authenticity, surpassing the neighboring restaurant's attempts to impress with a more complicated approach. What truly made this dining experience exceptional was the incredible kindness and generosity of the hosts. They went above and beyond by offering a complimentary meal to my child, as he was quite young. This unexpected gesture not only demonstrated their genuine care for their guests but also made our visit truly unforgettable. I left this restaurant with a strong desire to return someday. It's not just about the food, but the overall experience. The friendly and genuine hosts, the delicious and unpretentious food, and the heartwarming gesture towards our child made this restaurant stand out. It's the kind of place that leaves a warm and lasting impression, and I can't wait to visit again in the future.

In this area is this decent restaurant , price is reasonable. Fried rice was too much greasy (much oil), i would be appreciated to have more food in one portion. Boy and woman was friendly.

Really good, authentic Sri Lankan cuisine! The place was packed when we came and we now understood why. Very tasty!! Great service too! Recommend highly.
Elena Schantl — Google review
The location is almost invisible from the main road because you have to enter a small road. The place is small and quite clean with a hand washing place in front. The food choices are quite varied with filling portions. The price is almost the same as the surrounding eating places. The food tastes quite delicious and is rich in flavor and spices. What needs to be improved is the service. If you come number 2 and order fried rice, noodles and deviled then guests number 3, number 4 and so on come with an order of just omlet then you will be served later. Not first come first service but easy order first service.

Veeery good sri lankan food to even better prices! We ate there twice with te whole family and it was incredibly tasty! We had vegetarian-, chicken- and fish curry, fried rice, kotthu, deviled chicken and fish noodels - all of it was super good! It is being cooked freshly and they ask you how spicy you like your food. The staff is friendly and pays attention to details. They offer a good variety of vegetarian food as well! 100% worth the money. We would always come back if we are back in Sigiriya.

We found this little restaurant by mistake and it was the best food we had in Sri Lanka! This is a family business, the owners are super nice and the food was amazing. Mom's Kitchen is a cozy little restaurant in Sigiriya run by a lovely family, with delicious and affordable real Sri Lankan food. It's a great stop on your travels to Sigiriya.
I cannot speak highly enough about our experience at Mom's Kitchen this evening. The food was delicious and the portions were plentiful at a great and affordable price. The family aspect of this place really brings everything over the top. From the minute you arrive you know you are welcome and both her sons are right there along side her helping and making sure everything is great for you. Had an incredible cookinclass and multiple meals at Mum's kitchen. The meals were all incredible authentic Sri Lankan food and the service so honest, genuine and friendly. To top it off the cooking class was great. We learnt how to make so many interesting things using only locally sourced raw ingredients. A wonderful experience. Would definitely recommend!

When visiting Sigiriya you really do have to eat at Mom's Kitchen - the food is delicious with some wonderfully, fresh flavours. Next day, decided to join Mom's cooking class because I was curious on how to achieve these tastes cooking at home - this is a 'to-do' for foodies and home cooking fans wanting authentic curry flavors: Cooking in Mom's kitchen you see everything is made fresh, the spices are dried and grinded from the plant, and talk about locally sourced - Mom's son climbed her garden trees to get fresh coconuts, oranges and cinnamon. As others have commented, it's more than a restaurant outing, it's the experience of joining a local family's home and kitchen. Got to love this place.

Fantastic food, absolutely friendly staff, and great cooking class! The cooking class was cheap, fun, interesting, all veggie, and absolutely delicious because you could eat everything you made afterwards! Food wise everything is delicious but I recommend the roti (with fruits or chocolate/banana) and the curry (especially the one with mango). It's a huge portion as it comes with multiple curry pots, so share one meal and enjoy all the different flavors :)

Do not go here. Where to start? When we arrived we were greeted and ordered food and drinks with the first waiter. He brought these quickly, bringing my wife the wrong drink and my “passion juice” which tasted like a salt shaker. We then sat and waited 40 long minutes with no sign of anyone. All this time there was no front of house staff and a swarm of mosquitoes had gathered. I went to go and pay for the drinks so we could leave, only to be told that the food would be 5 minutes. I believe what we were served was whatever was to hand in the kitchen. I was served an oily raw vegetable roti and my wife was served a luke warm curry which was completely dry and bland. This was served by the chef who came out to scold us for asking about the food, saying it takes ages to make. If that is the quality of food it takes you 40 minutes to make, you may want to rethink your decision to be a restaurant. As there was no front of house staff we didn’t have the opportunity to complain or leave. We paid quickly after eating the edible bits and left. Please avoid.
