Fortress
Sights & Landmarks
The Rocca Aldobrandesca is a small yet delightful and tranquil fortress. During the month of October, it exudes a certain charm and simplicity that provides a soothing atmosphere. The abundance of souvenir and artisanal stores implies that it undergoes noticeable changes when high summer arrives. Its beauty is truly remarkable, and one can only hope that the ongoing renovations will persist successfully. The fortress also offers breathtaking sights in January.
Not very big but quite charming, simple and relaxing. In October. The number of souvenir and local craft shops, may suggest it is quite different in high summer.

(Translated by Google) The Aldobrandesca fortress, or rather the imposing structures of the building, are inserted within the city walls and is juxtaposed with the Cathedral, located at the opposite pole of the village plan. The layout of the building, which stands on a previous evidence from the Etruscan era, is typical of the fortresses of the time. A semicircular tower is clearly visible. (Translated by Google) 1. The tufa rock on which Sovana is situated was already inhabited by the Etruscans and then the Romans. Already in the 5th century, Sovana was the capital of a bishopric. 2. At the end of the 10th century, Sovana passed into the hands of the Aldobrandeschi family and they built the castle around the year 1000. They have ruled Sovana for 300 years. The most famous member of the family is Pope Gregory VII, born in Sovana, known from history for his dispute with Emperor Henry IV. It was to Gregory VII, to Canossa, that Henry IV went in 1077 and, dressed in a sack, asked for the lifting of his excommunication for several days. 3. Sovana was taken over in 1293 by the Orsini family as a result of the marriage of Romano Orsini with Anastasia Aldobrandeschi. The capital of the Orsini was Pitigliano. This contributed to the slow decline of the city and the castle. 4. In the following years, Sovana and its castle belonged to the Medici, who tried to restore the city's glory. The plague got in the way. 5. The town and the castle were falling into disrepair because they were practically abandoned. At the beginning of the 18th century, only 24 people lived here. Currently, the town is being renovated, but it is still depopulating. In 2011, 122 people lived here. (Original) 1. 2. 3. Sovana została przejęta w 1293 roku przez ród Orsinich w wyniku małżeństwa Romano Orsiniego z Anastazją Aldobrandeschi. Stolicą Orsinich było Pitigliano. Przyczyniło się to do powolnego upadku miasta i zamku. 4. W latach następnych Sovana wraz zamkiem należała do Medyceuszy, którzy próbowali przywrócić miastu świetność. Na przeszkodzie stanęła zaraza. 5. Miasteczko i zamek niszczało bo zostało praktycznie opuszczone.

This hotel needs to be refurbished. The pool is nice, and the area rugs are nice but that is all the positives I can share. The grounds were unkept, the furnishings were very old and dated. There was not communication regarding check-in and parking which is in an adjacent area not easy to find with a gate and code that was not given to us. The breakfast was all store bought products, and some eggs that had been sitting for hours it looked like. The worst was the air conditioning it did not cool the room enough at all especially the loft bedroom. When I complained I was told to keep the window shutters closed, this not only didn't work but then felt like we were in a dungeon. The common areas were also very dark and warm. Seemed like they did not want to spend the money to light or cool the place in summer! Folks this property is charging way too much for the experience that they provide! Spend your money somewhere else!

A stunning location, right in the heart of Sovana, with a beautiful garden and pool - and a secret maze! Great location to explore the area or just to relax by the pool. We went in July and it was almost deserted! Incredible. The staff were very professional and incredibly accommodating to our stay.

I came to town after having been let down by a close by agricultural. Also one hour after regular checkin time, the team was very friendly and supportive. Because of my late arrival I was offered to use the facilities (swimming pool etc.) on the next day (= day of departure)... there is this saying that „a friend in need is a friend indeed“ - really appreciated the friendliness and helpfulness of this venue!

Pretorio Palace, a historical monument located in a charming village, holds immense significance due to its rich past. This architectural gem showcases the ancient Etruscan heritage and is constructed from tuffaceous materials. A must-see attraction, it offers visitors an opportunity to delve into history and explore the impressive 11th century cathedral alongside various other well-preserved structures.

(Translated by Google) Like the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, the cathedral of San Pietro and the Rocca Aldobrandesca, it is located in a small Tuscan village, Sovana, in the province of Grosseto. It dates back to the 12th century, it is located in the square of the same name on which the Archive Palace, the Buorbon del Monte Palace and Santa Maria also stand. It's a shame that a gazebo was built next to the Palace for the bar next door which obscures the beautiful overall view (Original) Come la chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore, la cattedrale di San Pietro e la Rocca aldobrandesca, si trova in un piccolo borgo toscano, Sovana, in provincia di Grosseto. (Translated by Google) It is a place that I recommend visiting to everyone who is in the Saturnia area. We "unfortunately" were there in the evening and we didn't visit practically anything because everything was closed. For this reason I would suggest to anyone who is in the area to go in the morning and visit the Etruscan necropolis, the Cathedral and much more. Having said this, however, even in the evening the small hamlet of the municipality of Sorano has its charm.

Nice cathedral, at the end of town. Has a few displays in several languages describing some history. Admission was 4 euros each. Be sure to go downstairs, just to the right if the altar, into the crypt. It has a pretty altar, and some bones from a saint. Worth a quick peek.
Sandra Verboom — Google review
Very nice Cathedral but the place has been turned into a tourist trap. Despite being a functional church the locals have barred all the normal entrances and oblige tourists to enter from a backdoor where they have placed a ticket counter and a terrible and tasteless souvenir shop very ugly and not in architectural harmony with the building. It is very strange that there is no dedicated entrance for believers who want to pray in the church without paying the entrance fee (that generally is the norm for Italian churches ). I don't know if this could be accepted by our pope Francis. Honestly said, this church has turned into a business by the local priest and inhabitants. Very sad as this should be a place of prayer and not a tourist business.
