Newhaven

Newhaven is a port town in the Lewes district of East Sussex, England, lying at the mouth of the River Ouse. The town developed during the Middle Ages as the nearby port of Seaford began drying up, forcing a new port to be established. Wikipedia.

Family restaurant
Drove Brewers Fayre is a relaxed and casual eatery for families, offering a diverse menu of traditional meals and popular international dishes. This restaurant chain provides a comfortable setting where patrons can enjoy both well-known classics and beloved favorites from around the world. With its welcoming atmosphere, Drove Brewers Fayre is an ideal destination for families looking to enjoy quality food in a laid-back environment.
Arrived at the neighbouring Premier Inn late afternoon on Friday 6 October, and booked a 7pm table at the Drove Brewers Fayre when asked by Rowan at Check-In/Reception. Walked into the Drove Brewers Fayre at 7pm and had to wait a few minutes for someone to acknowledge us and take us to our table. We were asked if we had any allergies and were given a large green folder when we said that we had a food intolerance; then we were shown to our table. We chose a table by the window. The restaurant wasn't busy, about a third of the tables had diners and the décor was pleasant enough. Didn't notice any cleanliness issues. After I'd consulted the large green folder for non-dairy items, Hubby went to the bar to place our food & drinks order, giving our table number 45. Drinks, beer (2x Doom Bar Ale @£4.30) for him was served to the table, mint tea (unlimited refills £3.19) for me had to be self-served at the Hot Drinks station. We both had the Crispy Chicken Goujons @£5.49, Served with smoky BBQ sauce as a Starter. The 3 or 4 large goujons arrived hot and juicy, not dry at all. Very yummy. Mains: Hubby had the Beef & Ale Pie Served with skin-on chips, peas and a jug of gravy (£11.79) which he enjoyed and said it was on par with other Beef & Ale pies he's had before. I had the 30-day-aged British & Irish beef 8oz Rump Steak (cooked medium), served with skin-on chips, grilled tomato, beer-battered onion rings and peas (£13.19). It was probably the best steak I've eaten. It was soft, juicy and tasty. I couldn't fault it. Didn't have a 'Pudding/Sweet' as we were both full. The meal was a great start to our weekend away. The serving staff were great, the atmosphere was relaxed and by the time we'd finished our meals the restaurant had filled out and there were celebrations at a couple of nearby tables. Total cost of meal including 2 beers = £47.75. We could have saved a bit of money if we'd dined before 6pm and taken advantage of the 2 Mains £11.49 Value Menu + Add A Starter for £2.99. Docked 1 star for the lack of attention on arrival.

Very disappointed ! Kids pizza meal was a frozen 50p sainsburys basics pizza that was dry and tasteless - kids Mac and cheese again very watery and not very nice I don’t expect much from kids meals but might as well stoped off at Aldi for a packet pasta and a 50p pizza 🍕 Won’t be going back to this branch any time soon

Took some time for the server to put our order through, had no idea what she was doing, had us waiting for 10 mins just to order the food. We finally sat down and a dessert arrived before any food. Food quality was very poor, I ordered my sons food from the Christmas menu which you'd expect to be at least edible but he was presented with a burnt pizza. How it was allowed to leave the kitchen is beyond me. I ordered the 2 course from the set menu to which is was just a carvery and the food was cold and over cooked. Very disappointing for xmas eve!

We know Whitbread have been degrading the hospitality industry for years but this place takes it to new lows! Food was terrible even by Brewers Fayre standards. No Covid measures taken, no staff in face masks, windows shut and boiling hot to the point of discomfort.

First time visiting the area and unfortunately extremely disappointed. We were staying at the adjoining hotel so booked our evening meal and breakfast. While the staff were friendly, the service on the evening was terribly slow and I wouldn't really say the pub was that busy. There were several other customers we spoke to who weren't happy either. The food was okay, just basic pub food but we would have eaten anything as we had waited so long. Breakfast times were better, (go early!) although the 'fresh' berries were still frozen.

Absolutely vile. Eaten here a few times with friends, family and partner. He actually refuses to eat here. Last two times I’ve eaten I’ve asked for a refund. Food is processed! Mash came out with sausages and peas once, peas were old and the mash was powdered rubbish. Gravy? I think McDonald give their kids meals more!! Photo attached wasn’t of what we ate but of a table that was next to ours and we’ve been sitting here a good half hour having a drink before going home. This place is a joke. Laughing looking at menu stating ‘Feed the Family for £18’. If you all want a case of the screaming abdabs then feel free

Lack of staff on shift and very slow services definitely need to employ more people to run effectively and efficiently food wasn't to bad but steak on the mixed grill was tiny never seen a 6 oz

Never again!! Every now and then I decide to give this place another go just because it’s local and convenient. I’m always reminded why I don’t go there! Food is less than satisfactory, service was non existent, bringing out more food before plates taken away. Staff constantly going back to the kitchen empty handed. Order was wrong. No welcome on arriving. Food dry and some missing- brought out half hour after we finished. Manager seemed stressed and like he couldn’t be bothered we were an inconvenience. Plus I didn’t feel great after so not confident my meal was gluten free. The table next to us has a massive pile of dirty plates in the middle and they brought out of their meals 3 times each time was wrong! No apology and each time just ignoring the pile of dirty plates! Sort out the management you need to give your staff instructions and management need work on people skills!! AVOID AVOID!!

The was cold . Slow to come to the table and there was not many people in the building. But it turn out they was cooking for the hotel all so. The tables and chairs was dirty and sticky on the tables and on top of the bar area. The area good area was seated out side on the bench area with drink. I would not send any one there for food.

We had breakfast here via the adjacent Premier Inn and if I could give zero stars, I would. £8 each for a continental breakfast that didn't really exist, because the food was gone by our arrival at 8am. We were there an hour and it was barely replenished, despite the unhelpful staff being asked. The orange juice had also run out and wasn't filled up, and the coffee cups had all gone from next to the coffee machine. I'll be writing to Premier Inn for a refund. Avoid.

The Hope Inn is a charming establishment situated along the Newhaven arm, offering delightful views from its outdoor seating area. The prices for drinks are reasonable and the staff exude warmth and hospitality. Recently revamped, this pub now boasts an impressive appearance and even hosts quiz nights for those interested. Despite being busy, the staff remain friendly and accommodating to large groups. The venue itself is lovely, allowing patrons to enjoy watching boats pass by in the nearby port.
A friendly popular pub very near Newhaven Harbour Arm (West of the river). A great place for campervans on a budget - they are permitted overnight down by the arm for a small fee where there is also a seafood shack and decent coffee van. Very windy on windy days, but can be sunny when the sun is out.

Great little pub located at the side of Newhaven arm. Great views from the outside seating area. Drinks are a good price and the staff are very warm and welcoming. Edit: This place has been revamped and really looks the part. Staff are still very friendly and now they have introduced a quiz night if that's your thing. It's a lovely place!

Went to The Hope for steak night supper celebration last night with a friend. Great welcome, great food, great service. Great (incredible) value for money. Happened to visit the night of their steak night deal. Nice steak and fries..... a tenner. Food was great at an amazing price. The Hope seems to have become my "go to Local" never had a poor plate of food there, nice bunch of staff to. Give it a try.

Visited on a Weds afternoon, lovely location next to the River Ouse at Newhaven port ..on our visit just one cask ale Harvey's of Lewes plus a few keg beers. Did not eat there .

Lovely welcoming atmosphere. I had a Caesar salad which was fine & my husband had sausages with veg which were crisp & tasty. The Ladies toilet was clean and there was a basket of sanitary products & babies' nappies available for anyone who needed them with a notice above saying "Help yourself". I thought that this was very thoughtful and mentioned it to the staff who said that it was the cleaner who had brought them in, so hats off to that person.

I have never personally been (so far) to this pub, but when I drive past it to the big car park at the end of Fort Road it always seems to be busy and popular. I wish them all the best in preserving pubs which are a part of our culture and history and they are disappearing fast. When I drive around, a lot of them that had been there since before I was born are now flats, private houses or convenience stores.

Excellent dishes. Very friendly staff. Beautiful historical information about the restaraunt and very interesting items inside, well worth capturing a few photos. My wife and I were passing through awaiting our ferry and enjoyed sitting outside.

While very busy on the day we arrived. The staff remained very friendly and accommodating, even though we had a large group. Lovely venue, and it was great to see the large ferry coming into port. Food, portions and price were really good. Would love to go back. Thank you once again for making our visit memorable.

Brilliant place to stop, eat and relax before boarding the night ferry to Dieppe. Warm friendly welcome and menu was traditional pub food but good portions and beautifully cooked. Lots of parking for big and small vehicles. We had a private table. Lots of space not cramped or noisy.

The atmosphere was very nice, The service was also good. The food was nice, just a little too much salt on the cabbage. Otherwise, it was a very nice meal. Car parking was opposite the Hope Inn. A very nice view of the harbour, if you are upstairs .

Friendly "old fashioned" British pub which serves excellent food and has a great atmosphere! We arrived really early for our 11pm ferry so this was the perfect place to eat and relax beforehand. The moules mariners was delicious! Friendly staff ready to have a laugh with us.

Luna Rossa Italian Restaurant, a charming little cafe situated in Newhaven, boasts an appealing location opposite the picturesque harbour. With its delightful decor and overall charm, this eatery offers a pleasant dining experience. The standout dish is their delectable bruschetta, which impresses with its impeccable blend of flavors. However, the pasta falls short in comparison and could benefit from improved cooking time to avoid excessive fattiness.
I've have frequented this Restaurant many times over the years when I visit my friend who is a local resident. Each time I'm consistently pleased with all the components. However on my most recent visit it was elevated to the fact that I was served by a young man, Shane, who not only approached me with enthusiasm but he was knowledgeable of the menu. He is an exemplary representative of this Restaurant. Well done Shane. Thank you.

Lovely little cafe in Newhaven. Parking is a pain. Be careful you don't incur a fine. Nice location opposite the harbour. Lovely decor and a pretty little cafe all round. The bruschetta was the best I have had anywhere. Perfect balance of flavours. The pasta was okay. The meat was not cooked for long enough therefore too fatty. Still a nice flavour though. Ambitious pricing for Newhaven-priced like it is in Brighton, and whilst the bruschetta was worth it our pasta portions were definitely not. Good food but a bit steep for the portions and quality. Probably wouldn't return but would recommend it for anyone looking for a good meal in the area.

So good we went back there for brekkie the next day! As a lot of the other reviews have said, the two boyos serving for the evening were brilliant. So polite and attentive. Food is lovely and coming from London, is a real steal. Highly recommend!

We went on a Thursday night last week after 9 pm as we were recommended by somebody local who rung ahead to make sure we got a table. We were greeted by a lovely young man who was very welcoming and happy to serve us . Sadly these days good service is hard to find. We had a bottle of red wine which was very nice and two bowls of salmone pasta which was one of the best we had tasted. We eat out normally in London or Brighton area's so that shows you how much we enjoyed our food here. We will definitely like to return to this little gem in Newhaven.

Great find in the middle of Newhaven. Typical Italian restaurant with rather authentic flavours and recipes from Italy. Fish meals taste fresh and rich, very well presented too. Loely selection of puddings. Service is very kind and attentive. Recommended.

Went there for a birthday meal, place was half full at peak time on Friday. Overall food was OK, nothing special but it was tasty and hit the spot, tried to order starters while choosing mains but apparently mains had to be ordered at the same time which was odd... When we eventually ordered, we got offered the starters to come separate to mains... So not sure why we couldn't have ordered them separately especially since they offered us desserts after we finished the mains 😂😅 Apart from the service being a bit awkward we had a nice time, thanks!

I visited a charming local pub called Flying Fish last night. It was a delightful establishment that every town should have. The reception was warm, and the customers were a diverse and friendly group. The food at this pub was absolutely outstanding, with a particularly appealing venison ragu that showcased the kitchen's enthusiasm. My wife enjoyed an excellent fish and chips dish, followed by a delectable treacle tart and ice cream for dessert.
Had a meal and a pint. The welcome to the pub was really friendly and gave the feeling that you had walked into your local pub. The food selection offered a great choice and was good quality. I would certainly go again if in town again. I would definitely recommend the Flying Fish.

Quirky little country pub. Very welcoming atmosphere. Limited menu but something for everyone cooked to a very high standard. Working away ,the landlady Vicky accommodated us to a cooked dinner at 19.00 when she would normally stop at 17.00. This was for ten people. Above and beyond like the food.

Booked in advanced for a Tuesday at 5 pm to take my 85y old mum out for her birthday. Unfortunately it was not a good experience. The food was decent when we eventually got it. It took over 1.5 hours for the mains to come out and that was after us asking where they were 4 times and the last time we said that we'll be leaving in 10 if they don't come out. There was only 2 other couples in the pub and they both ordered after us but got 2 courses before us! Our 2 year old loved waiting around!!! The pub was lovely inside, the food was decent. They only had one person working for the whole pub I think. They then had the cheek to give me a bill and didn't take the deposit off! I called the manager to explain so they had a chance to discuss it but he was not very interested and after explaining all the above he said "I'm not good at this you are best to speak to my wife, she isn't here" I left my name and number but now 5 days later I've not had any contact. Disappointing

And happy to see quality of food continue in the children's menu aswel. Staff very friendly and welcoming We really enjoyed it. Will be returning for more!

So scruffy dog hair everywhere. Along with the publicans 3 dogs in the garden which is fine apart from one dog continually barking unless you played with him. The place and people were lovely which made up for the lack of hygiene and general rundown look of the place. Clearly its too much to handle for the current owner. Has immense potential

Went to this lovely local pub last night. Every town should have one. Warm welcome, a mixture of customers, all very friendly and the food - superb. I noticed a venison ragu which suggested an enthusiastic kitchen! Ragu just superb as was my wife's fish and chips, followed by delicious treacle tart and ice cream. Impossible to fault - a fabulous local, just wished we lived closer!

Never been here before & only popped in for a quick pint with my Wife, hence 3*s. I'm sure its a cracking pub, sadly we live miles away. Great pint of Harveys best & the barman was very welcoming.

Really nice traditional pub, didn’t get food but it looked amazing, however the drinks are extremely expensive. Paid nearly £7 for a pint of cheap beer. Really don’t understand why the prices need to be that high, I understand they need to make money but nowhere else charges like that especially when the pub is in a poor area. It isn’t central Brighton so why charge this for a local pub? Would like to go back but can’t justify those prices for a quick pint

What a cute little pub tucked away. Looks so pretty from the outside and is sooo cosy on the inside!! Nice little old cottage. 1 side of the bar is like oldy worldy and then when you go sit in the back area has a Modern feel. We didn't book a table in advance and we walked in and there was a table available. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere is so nice in there too Our food was just incredible and comes out looking amazing on the slate tiles Will definitely be back!! Thank you!!

We enjoyed lunch at The Flying Fish. The food was excellent, especially the Ploughman's. My husband was disappointed that the guest ale was off and there were no other Shepherd Neame ales on draught, only bottles. Other than that, it was a good visit.

We arrived on a Sunday, in Newhaven, 4hrs before our ferry was due to leave for Dieppe. All the restaurants we looked at, had finished serving food and then we happened upon The Flying Fish and what a find it was! From stepping in the door, we were made to feel so welcome, (which is very unusual in a rural pub!) from Will, the Bar Manager and regulars, Nicki, Steve & Phil. Even though it was late, the Chef managed to rustle up two fabulous Sunday Dinners for us. There was so much, we couldn't eat it all and the kitchen very kindly put what was leftover, in foil, to take away with us. So we enjoyed another Sunday dinner the next day, when we arrived back in France! Great hospitality, we will definitely be back next time we are in Newhaven! Wishing Will and the Flying Fish team, every success in their new venture, just carry on what your doing! 👍

Cycling from London to Paris and arrived in Newhaven about 6.30pm just before dark, with about 4 hours before we could check-in for the ferry. Had a relaxing time sorting cycling gear, recharging ourselves and phones, Garmins etc including a few drinks and a good evening meal. Just what we needed.

Padella D'oro Restaurant is a hidden gem in the area that offers an extensive menu with options for gluten-free food. The prices are reasonable, and the staff is friendly and engaging. The restaurant exudes a Mediterranean vibe with its atmosphere and music. It's the perfect place to enjoy a delicious meal before catching a ferry. With its warm and welcoming ambiance, varied menu, and good service, Padella D'oro is highly recommended. Don't miss out on their homemade cheesecake dessert!

Food is okay. Friendly but very slow service when eating in. On one occasion I ordered a takeaway and they forgot the pizza. I had to wait for it to be cooked when I arrived; we ended up with a cold risotto and an undercooked pizza. I did not receive a response to my email. They currently only have a 3 star hygiene rating, so I have not eaten there in over a year.
