Restaurant
Spice Villa, an Indian restaurant located on Chard high street, offers a delectable culinary experience. The Sunday Banquet night provides a chance to savor flavorsome dishes like Sheekh kebab served with a delightful yellow yoghurt sauce. The chicken tikha methi curry impresses with its balanced spiciness and rich taste. The tarkha daal is also highly recommended. At an affordable price of £15.95, the meal is both substantial and delicious.
Excellent meal, excellent staff and they listened were attentive Food was amazing would highly recommend and we will be returning

For a valentine's meal, I was expecting a good meal for me and my girlfriend, however the food came out warm, not hot. Also after the meal we both now have food poisoning. Night was good, the morning thou wasn't.
Cameron Walters — Google review
Decided to come here after Bath House was closed. Arrived just as they were opened. Ordered Tandoori prawns which were £8 and we expected 4, we got 2! In our opinion, very overpriced. We Ordered 2 special biryiani, with chicken, lamb, and "king prawns" what we got was a very tasty dish, however the "king prawns" were tiny frozen ones.. Speaking of dishonesty, we got the bill after eating and discovered that the chutneys which we had on our table when we arrived, are charged at £4! There was no mention of this - when I questioned this, the manager shouted from behind me, without facing me, "IT SAYS ON THE MENU!" So, basically if you touch the chutneys that in every other Indian restaurant are free, they charge you. Inthijk this is dishonest, and not forthcoming.

I visited on the Sunday Banquet night. The Sheekh kebab was full of flavour and was served with an accompanying yellow yoghurt sauce. The chicken tikha methi curry was very good, not too spicy but with a good consistency and flavour. The tarkha daal was also very good. At £15.95 all in, it was a substantial and very tasty meal. The service was attentive.

Had overcooked prawns in a Madras which was not very spicy. Overall very disappointed as I love Indian food.
Barry Conacher — Google review
Food very expensive to the point of feeling robbed hence the review. The food was mediocre at best and quite bland, tables to close together and being constantly asked to move so staff could get by wasn't a highlight of the evening. An experience I won't be having again.
russell bishop — Google review
Very tasty Indian right on Chard high street. Well presented and moorish, flavoursome curries and side dishes, tender well-cooked meat, fluffy chewy naans.. We had king prawn masala, chicken jalfrezi, mixed starter, naan popadoms etc. all really good - blew our other recent Indian meals out the water.

Delicious food, some of the best that we've had in a long time. Everything was fresh and you could tell the chefs had put their heart and soul into the food. I would highly recommend this place!

Pub
The Choughs Hotel is a spacious establishment with an affable proprietor and frequented by amiable residents. They offer appetizing and reasonably priced pub fare, particularly their highly recommended Sunday roast. During the colder months, a delightful open fire is lit to create a cozy atmosphere. Additionally, they boast a beer garden complete with a children's play area at the rear of the premises. Ample car parking facilities are available for patrons' convenience.
Great local pub, friendly helpful staff, good tunes, good selection of drinks, well worth a visit
Neil Coker — Google review
Decent sized pub with a welcoming landlord and frequented by friendly locals. Nice and reasonably priced pub grub (Sunday roast highly recommended). Nice open fire that gets lit in the winter. Beer garden with kids play area out back. Car parking available. Very dog friendly, the 'help yourself' policy to the dog treats jar means your good boy or girl will get spoilt by the locals.

It so unusual to find a traditional friendly locals pub in town. Landlord excellent mine host. Open all day every day including xmas day. Roaring fire in grate and dog friendly. Love this pub.
Barbara Williams — Google review
I was so excited when I heard this place had young new management, but I shouldn't have bothered. Under stocked, since day one, nothing happening there, empty week after week, attracting no new custom whatsoever, staff are friendly enough but just serve, and then go back to their permanent little clique, talking with each other, and nothing else. All this place really is, is a place for three or four best friends to have a roof over their heads....
Stephen Long — Google review
This to me is an amazing friendly pub. People in there are so welcoming. Since relocating recently from Suffolk to Chard this has now become our local.
Alison Cruickshanks — Google review
Food very good value for money. Very acceptable quality - only complaint that mash potato had some lumps in it! Staff very polite and attentive for this sort of dining experience (order and pay for food at the bar). I did find it a bit strange that they don't appear to serve desserts, though.

Indian restaurant
Curry House is an above average restaurant that offers Indian cuisine for both dine-in and take away. The dining space is limited, so it is advisable to choose the timing of dinner carefully. The daal, rated 8.5/10, stands out with its noticeable garlic flavor. The chicken biriyani and vegetable side curry are above average, while the keema naan is good as well. It would enhance the biriyani if served in a traditional dish.
5 stars for food, its excelent but , first time I order and I've found this on my chicken. Be more careful next time.

An above average restaurant for dine- in/ take away Indian Food. Limited dining space, so I guess you need to choose your time for dinner carefully. A 8.5/10, excellent Daal with enough garlic to notice. Above average chicken biriyani with an excellent vegetable side curry. The keema Naan was good too. If the biriyani had been served in a traditional biriyani dish, it would be even better. Good , friendly service. Food washed down with iced water, the drink of lions . I hope to try other dishes there soon and support this local restaurant, as I live in Chard part of the time now.

Very poor. Not up to an average Indian curry, nasty kitchen and dirty staff clothing. Never will I go the again as the food has no taste.
Suffer Black — Google review
Really disappointing meal, for starters one of the naan breads was not what we ordered, I called to ask for a replacement and was essentially gaslit by them telling me I was wrong and that it was definitely the naan bread I ordered despite me telling them clearly multiple times it wasn't (it absolutely wasn't what I ordered). So not a great start, the naan breads themselves were cold in the centre and very doighy. In fact most of our meal was cold or lukewarm at best which considering I picked it up from the restaurant and we were their only order at the time is pretty shocking. The Curry itself had actually separated which was pretty unpleasant, the flavours were not awful but certainly not worth the money. We also ordered a biriyani, the meat in it was well cooked and the flavours of the rice were okay but the curry that came with it was as bland as Bath water. For some reason we ordered chips, we shouldn't have, they were essentially oil torpedoes disguised as chips, they also got soaked by all the water that separated from the curry which possibly improved them? Hard to tell. My partner kept trying to make me feel better about wasting my money on this by saying "well it was edible" so I suppose Curry House have got that going for them, they make edible food. All that said, the mint dip was top tier so good job. The dip paired with the leftover Pataks poppadoms we had in the cupboard was honestly the highlight of my edible meal.

Amazing curry, always fresh. Would recommend Curry House.
Megan Parkes — Google review
We’ve ordered a couple of times and never got disappointed, usually we always order the same the chicken korma is very tasty as well as the sides and and the bread. The service is quite good however the portions are small compared with the price.
Catarina Alves — Google review
Just ordered - delivery was super fast! Can't fault that at all. Real shame the food is awful. Probably the worst 2 curries I've tasted. Tesco ready meal curries taste nicer - genuinely. Can taste the tomato ketchup they've used in the tikka masala. Maybe they just got these two dishes wrong so perhaps order something else if you really want to order from here. Advice - just make your own butter chicken and chicken tikka masala, will taste better. Feel robbed of my 30 odd pounds. Garlic naan is alright but nothing special. Very disappointing overall - going to soldier through now as I'm hungry but this is a wildly disappointing Saturday night lol Edit - delivery driver was friendly as a bonus Edit after finishing - my mouth tastes like I've had to do a drinking game forfeit of a shot of apple cider vinegar. Do with that what you will
Christian Sloane — Google review
Curry tasted ok, but nothing to write home about. They missed a curry from my delivery but on calling they delivered a replacment in around 15 min. Ordered from Curry House, as Spice Villa is closed on Tuesday. Next time, I will wait until Wednesday for Spice Villa to be open again.
Shane Brett — Google review
Just eat delivery: paid £32 for a Garlic Chicken and a Chicken Rogan Josh but the chicken on both of them was really awful. I've never had chicken like that before. It was chewy, tough and very fibrous and totally unpallatable. No idea where they sourced it. Two bites and yuk....it all went in the bin. Just wasted £32 on food that might just be passable as animal feed. Not just saying this, It really was that awful. I wish I could get my money back. I would question whether the produce was substandard and fit for human consumption. I would have my doubts. I suggest you steer clear of this establishment

Really glad to have tried this restaurant on a Sunday when staying in Chard. The staff were very friendly and our English waiter was charming. We brought our own beer ( a first for us!) as they don't have a licence to sell. The food was fresh and cooked beautifully and we both thought it was the best Indian cuisine we'd had in a long while. Great value on top of that!

We order once or twice a week as we are so addicted. Love their bhuna so tasty and pilau rice is so fragrant. Getting ready to order again and just last ordered 3 days ago. It's becoming a habit but a good one. So good and great fast delivery service too!

Bakery
The Village Bakery is widely regarded as one of the top establishments for sandwiches and rolls. Customers rave about their delectable offerings, including baguettes filled with chicken, bacon, mayo, and salad. The portions are generous, easily satisfying even those with hearty appetites. With reasonable prices and friendly staff, it's no wonder that this bakery is a favorite among patrons. Their breads are particularly noteworthy, especially the poppy seed baguette and brown bread with seeds.
this is the best bakery around, everything iv had has been very fresh and very nice. ice buns are to die for, melt in the mouth fresh they are such a treat.

We came as we were looking for a brown bread with seeds and ended up seating in the cafe that was totally unknown for us, we’ve ordered one cappuccino which was lovely and a chicken and bacon baguette that was delicious. The place is quite small but is worth to visit, the bread was delicious too.
Catarina Alves — Google review
Great little bakery with very good bread, cakes, baked goods etc. Didn't try the cafe yet but looks like a nice place to take a break.

Great little place to grab a coffee & cake, plus plenty of bakery products & rolls available to purchase. Staff very polite & attentive, will visit again.

Me and my boyfriend come here all the time, by far the best bakery we’ve ever come across. The filled rolls are FILLED, the cakes are fresh and made with love, you really get your moneys worth here. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Megan Littlejohns — Google review
Quite possibly the best sandwiches/rolls etc we've ever had. I bought a poppy seed baguette with chicken, bacon, mayo and salad it was £4ish and it was practically a loaf, it easily fed me and my 3 girls (all 11yrs+ with healthy appetites). Good value, Good food, Lovely staff, Our 3yr old recommends the iced buns

Great bakery! Lovely, traditional bakery. Good place to eat in or take away
Zak Williams — Google review
I have used this bakery for many years. But I will not be using it again after my recent experience. Covid has made life very difficult for everyone. When entering a shop it would be nice to be greeted with a smile or even a hello not the moaning and like I was told they had only been open for 3 mins!! 🤔

Fish and chips takeaway
Fast food restaurant
Whites in Chard is a highly recommended chip shop that serves fantastic fish and chips. It was discovered while searching for good places to eat locally. The fish is freshly cooked to order, and the chips are hot, crispy, and delicious. The staff are friendly and welcoming, making the overall experience fabulous. Supporting local small businesses like Whites is important as they contribute greatly to the community. When craving fish and chips, there's no better place than Whites in Chard for a satisfying meal.
Was staying near by, popped in for some chips to go with our pizzas at the farm. Lovely chips, best we've had for ages. I had a sausage as well...I asked the rest of our party if they would like to taste my sausage, there were no takers! Maybe try a couple of baps next time.
Eugene Dimmick — Google review
Absolutely disgusting 🤢 I asked for... chips, chicken breast and mushy peas but what I got was, extra dry chicken breast that must of been under the hot lights all day and normal peas in green water, they were not mushy at all, the chips weren't to bad once I put them in bread for a butty. This is NOT the best chippy in Chard, Lucky fish bar is the BEST in Chard.
Sheila Sheridan — Google review
We ordered from you guys tonight. We normally have great food from you, but after this evening we won’t be back. We ordered salt and pepper chips.. which did not come looking like what i thought they would after seeing a photo online of your salt and pepper chips.. hence why i ordered them, i couldn’t even eat them they had that much seasoning and salt on, absolutely disgusting and the sausage looked like it had been cooked for 1,000 years. waste of money. i would also like to add that there’s a lady behind the counter who is so rude, we’ve noticed this every time we have come and ordered from you. a little kindness doesn’t go far.
Annie Tombs — Google review
When you really fancy fish and chips, you wont find it more satisfying than when you get them from Whites in chard. The best gourmet food in the world could not have tasted better! And the added bonus is how friendly and welcoming the staff are. A fabulous all round experience. Thank you!
Julie Gordon — Google review
IMO it has to be one of the best fish and chips shops in England. The fish isn't too greasy and just the right amount of batter on the fish. Well worth a visit
Keith Edney — Google review
Generous portion of cod ( large), standard chips. Very fresh white chunks of fresh cod ( not frozen). The chips were crisp not soggy. Overall a satisfying meal. Friendly staff and good value at £10.80. Cash not card . Its cash in Chard.

Happy to recommend- very generous portions! Crispy batter , fresh chips and friendly service. What more could you ask for? 😋 We will be returning!
Margaret Bates — Google review
After reading good reviews thought we'd give it a try as we were down here on holiday! Chips were OK but the fish was awful, it was like rubber and I could barely cut it. Looked as though it had been cooked a few times!!
Angela Hughes — Google review
Fantastic little chip shop. Was delivering local (Steel Hgv 1 Driver) and Googled good places to eat. This place came well recommended, so decided to try it. Had a nice conversation with the staff while I waited. I was not disappointed. Fish was cooked fresh to order, and chips were nice, hot, and crispy. Enjoyed it thoroughly. Will defo be back next time I'm in the area. Nice to support local small business like these. They are the bearing heart of communities. A++
Ash Rafi — Google review
One of the best fish and chips in Chard, the fish is tasty and succulent also the portions are quite big although usually quite greasy. The service is average, unfortunately they only take cash and closing time is too early.
Catarina Alves — Google review
Really friendly people, and really fast service. The chips were nice and portions were huge, however the batter for the fish was very oily which seeped out as a liquid and was all I could taste when eating… this spoiled the meal unfortunately.
