Brantôme, also known as the "Venice of Perigord," is a charming town located in the Dordogne department of southwestern France. Situated on an island surrounded by branches of the La Dronne river, Brantôme offers a picturesque setting with its 11th-century bell tower and troglodyte caves in the abbey. Brantome Abbey, nestled in the picturesque village of Brantome in the Dordogne region, is a stunning riverside Benedictine abbey with an 11th-century bell tower and cliff caves once inhabited by monks. Often referred to as "The Venice of the Dordogne," this charming destination is situated along the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route. The abbey, founded by Charlemagne and housing relics of Saint Sicarius, offers a fascinating glimpse into history.
We wandered around in the cave and totally enjoyed all the history and gardens. Then we ate at one of the sweet little cafes on the street of the Abbey. After that we hit the shops in the little village across the bridge and souvenir shopped my little heart out. Wonderful day!

Didn't go to the Abbey itself but this is a very pretty picturesque town that is well worth a visit at any time but especially when the sun is shining and the Friday morning market is open. I've been visiting this region for years and this spot is always a favourite.

Stunning place to visit! Boat rides, caves, cafes, shopping, beautiful architecture

Beautiful little village that has seen every culture from Neanderthal man living in Troglodyte Caves to the work of monks dating from as far back as 8th Century. Recommended to us by another Brit traveller and glad we made the trip

Probably the most gorgeous village in the entire Dordogne department.

Visited Brantome for the second time and I have to say its an amazing beautiful place. There are even shops built into caves next to the river which surrounds the island. You can hire canoes and kayaks and paddle around the island and over a weir to complete a circuit. Would I visit a third time... definitely. Fantastic.

Very cool. Lots to do: train, shops, historic church, picnic areas, historic sites and great views.

Gorgeous place, only went to get a coffee and ended up staying a couple of hours. Beautiful old buildings and very relaxing.

A truly wonderful feast for the eyes. This is a lovely place to visit and surprisingly things aren't that expensive. The parking is everywhere and free... Oh how the Brits could learn a few things from the French. 1) you don't have to charge a fortune for parking. 2 things in tourists centres don't have to be priced to make a days profit from selling one item. Price them properly and you'll sell lots... The French do. Cafés, restaurant's and lovely little shops are everywhere. I'd go if I were you...

Brantome is one of the most beautiful and preserved village in Dordogne. The Abbey is so interesting and the walk along the river is beautiful. Kayak tours are also available and recommended. You can sit and relax by the old stone bridge in front of the water mill. Many shops offer locally made crafts.

The core of the "Dordogne" region is undoubtedly the Dordogne department, with Perigueux as its capital. In France, this area is commonly referred to as "le Perigord," and it is renowned for its gastronomic specialties like pate de foie gras, truffles, and walnuts. For visitors, the focal point of the Dordogne lies in an enclave called "le Perigord noir," situated in the southeastern part of the department.
(Translated by Google) I came to live and work in Dordogne more than 30 years ago. It's a beautiful area, there's a lot of history, there are lots of places to visit and activities to do. And what's more, the "cradle of Man", We must not forget this in this world where we no longer have any reference points. Let's get back to the basics! 🤔😉 (Original) Je suis venue vivre et travailler en Dordogne, cela fait plus de 30 ans. Castle
Sights & Landmarks
The Château de Bourdeilles is a historic site comprising of a 13th-century fortress and a Renaissance chateau that showcases period antiques. It was once the seat of Perigord's oldest barony, with its first barons living in mythical times when they fought griffins and traveled to Jerusalem using dragon ear ointment. The castle stood at the frontier between English Guyenne and France, commanding a strategic position over the river.
Amazing little village with a beautiful chateau, river and church. Going back in time. We did not enter the chateau.
Cornelis Krul — Google review
Really boring it’s an empty lifeless place I wonder where the money of the entrance tickets goes ?? Also you will have to deal with 2 ridiculous staff employed at the desk look like there are there to annoy you ! And if you have a dog then forget about coming here they are not welcome ! Really disappointing place it’s a shame due to the history behind it , you better spend your money in the restaurant at the base of the chateaux you’ll have a better time !
Sylvain Deleu — Google review
We stopped by on our way to Perigueux and what a pleasant surprise this Chateau was. While we enjoyed the older part of the complex (and I agree that it was a bit disappointing that the tower was closed) it was the newer part and the wonderful rooms and furniture that were amazing. It provides a better idea of what similar rooms might have looked like long ago and really allows one to imagine the time period. It also has wonderful gardens to walk through and perfect views of the river and Mill from the upper floors. Well worth a few hours of your time!
Chris Chaisson — Google review
Visited the chateau today, very clean and well organised. Disappointed that the tower was closed. Would have liked an English option on the information boards. Very interesting place, with lots of beautiful furniture and objects on display. Well worth a visit for adults but I think that children would find it boring.

You're in for a treat if you head to this little gem, there's a tiny little village surrounding the castle which in itself is worth a little wonder around with a nice walk along the river. The castle is in 2 parts with a more traditional castle and a renaissance palace alongside with excellent views from all sides and a very helpful audio guide for €3 which can be shared amoung the group. Unfortunately the tower wasn't open when we went so we missed out on that but still very good. If you happen to be in this area I would also recommend the short drive to brantome.
Ornate Fabrications Limited — Google review
Chateau de Bourdeilles is an interesting mix of the very old, old and recently old .... but it's sometimes difficult to tell the difference. The tour of the new Chateau was well presented, interesting, historic and at times, funny! But you couldn't sense the connection between the Chateau and the stories. It felt a bit like a mish-mash museum where a lot of the items were connected with a time period rather than the house, it's inhabitants or historic events. There was obviously a gaping hole in some of the history of the place so overall, it felt a little hollow. All in all, it's still an interesting day out and the scenery from the top of the keep is awesome.

Lovely chateau by the river and great views from the top of the tower

It is well worth a visit. We received a really good welcome when we arrived and our host told us all about how the gardens had developed. It is a really relaxing place to both walk round and sit. The Acer trees and water features are beautiful. We will hopefully return some day.

Beautiful, tranquil gardens lovingly maintained by a charming British husband and wife team. In the garden you can have a cup of tea, coffee or a soda and feel instantly relaxed. We enjoyed our visit very much. Dogs welcome on lead.

These were indeed tranquil and beautiful. Very relaxing wandering among the hedges and water features listening to the classical music at just the right volume. The hosts were lovely, and try and talk to all their visitors. Don't miss out on the lovely toilet as well.

Beautiful gardens with a multitude of secret paths windy through them. The gardens are certainly very tranquil and well worth a visit. We will be revisiting throughout next year and in the future. We went in October and the colours were stunning The gardens will have different appeal throughout the year but will I believe always look stunning. There are woods, a river, lawns and shrubbery and a well located tea room. The owners are really charming and welcoming You will feel very relaxed and welcome .

What a fabulous place to visit. We enjoyed a peaceful stroll around the gardens this afternoon with our dog (on a lead) and it was just lovely. Lots of different areas including a little island, all very natural and beautifully maintained. We met the owners who were so welcoming and we chatted for ages. The gardens are a real credit to them. We look forward to returning in the Spring or Summer when we can spend longer with a picnic and enjoy all the new colours.
